Dreams and Detours is a show about the life we thought we were going to have vs the one we are living. We all have a story. I share mine and I speak to others about following their dreams, or getting derailed entirely. And then getting back up again.
Life is hard and messy and joyful. The choices we make in our 20's and 30's are not always the ones we want to stick with in our 40's or 50's. Inevitably we come to crossroads, more often than not. If we let fear hold us back, the result can be tremendous dissatisfaction. But if we take the leap toward our dreams, well then, the adventure really begins.
Susan sat down with Bridget Sorenson, founder and CEO of Blue Water Wave to talk about the importance of connection. As a former digital and event marketer, Bridget knows the power of connecting people to places and experiences that are unique and valuable. Her work with luxury brands provided a great opportunity to master her skills and desire to bring together the best of the best. When this mother of five was suddenly faced with breast cancer, she turned her focus to surviving and with that came the opening to create the ultimate professional networking organization, and Blue Water Wave was born. BWW is a premier platform for dynamic decision makers and business owners looking to expand their network and drive their business success through symbiotic relationships. Integrity, excellence, and superior client relations are all cornerstones for this group of elite leaders. Bridget is the ultimate connector, fostering a community of business owners who understand how to be their best while living their best.

Susan welcomes Mike Overlie back to the show to talk about men’s mental health. While June may have been declared the month to focus on the importance of this, we both felt it should be a conversation that happens regularly. Mike knows systems don’t work unless all parts are in alignment. He also knows that most men haven’t been given the emotional skills to handle the messiness that life throws at them. In his book, Let Your Dog Lead, Mike shares his own emotional awakening and how that was a massive life changer. He also shared one of his favorite poems, by Dale Wimbrow, Guy In the Glass

In celebration of Men’s Mental Health month, Susan welcomes Jason Barnaby, Chief Fire Starter at Fire Starters Inc, to talk about the sh*tstorm that life becomes when we don’t have the emotional tools to manage everyday living. Jason’s mission is to change the world one fiery heart at a time by helping people #ignitehope and #torchfear. Earlier this year Jason had his own breakthrough, coming to grips with the slow and steady build up of depression that cracked him open to better understand his own journey. He talks openly about the impact it had on him, his relationships, work, and the overwhelming exhaustion that was pulling him down. Jason’s decision to share his story over the past few months has been an act of service as other men have stepped forward to thank him for starting this much needed conversation. Tune in to hear more about the importance of processing feelings and owning your sadness. It’s a strength!

Susan welcomes friend of the podcast John Weiman to talk about the way that energy changes the course of our connection to others and the space around us. From feeling impatient and frustrated to excited and overjoyed, we bring ourselves fully to each moment in time. Sometimes, our energy arrives before we even begin to speak. John has had his own experiences with bumps, personally and professionally, that can often occur when we are not paying attention. The good news is that we can make shifts in our mindset as well as the space around us in order to create much needed harmony.

Susan welcomes Maureen Kafkis back to the show to talk about using our intuition to guide us toward living the life we want. The idea that we can tap into our internal vibe isn’t new, but it is an incredibly smart way to approach life. Maureen shares her own experiences trusting her gut and the big eruption that led her to restart life in all the ways she dreamt but hadn’t been able to act upon. There are many ways to get things done, but the first step will always be getting out of your head and activating on your desires. It doesn’t have to be perfect and should be full of errs, because that is how you fine tune the magic of trusting yourself. The space inside you and around you will influence your direction, so harness it in all the ways you want it to go! Susan welcomes Allyson Fusella back to the show to chat about relationships. We are not given a manual to understand the foundations of relationships, instead we look outward at others people’s versions of how to act or respond to the emotional interactions in our most intimate connections. From ego to the misinformation we see across social media, the roles we play in our private lives can get messy, leaving us feeling disconnected. Inevitably, we bring our inadequacies and lack of self-understanding to our partners, further complicating the union. No matter the age, we can often repeat the behaviors modeled for us or fine-tune the mistakes we’ve been making all along. Allyson takes us through the various ways in which we can pull back the veil on what we really want so we can attract and nurture love that feels right. Tune-in for some nuggets of wisdom to get you started today.

John Weiman is back to chat with Susan about the personal relationships in their formative years that shaped them. Both of them talk about their earliest role models that defined the look and sound of love, and how we all bring some of that baggage to our relationships. The mistakes can sometimes be on repeat until we learn the lessons needed in order to understand how to love ourselves. It is only then that we can recognize how to attract the love that lets us grow into the best version of ourselves. Tune-in to hear how each of them found their own way toward loving partnerships.

John Weiman is back to chat with Susan about trust, both in the relationship and with the therapist. Most people think of trust in relationships to be about fidelity, which is not at all where this essential component must exist. The questions about trust are: Can I trust you to be myself? Can I trust you will be there for me?
Then there is the trust and bond that therapist and client require: can you trust me to guide you back toward yourself, to your relational connections? Tune-in to hear John tell us more on building back the ‘trust account’ with our partners.

In this encore presentation of episode 127, meet Jenny Crozier! Susan and Jenny sit down to talk about living life to the fullest, that it is never being too late to start something new, and how being from a family of tradesmen led her to a life of working in what has been traditionally known as a man’s field. Jenny’s deep sense of self, desire to work hard, get dirty and enable other women into a life of working in the trades is a fun story. Her day job is in trucking safety compliance , and co-owner of Crozier Construction. Jenny also spreads the word about careers in skill-based trades to young girls and women through the multiple organizations she belongs to as well as speaking at schools and trade camps. She informs young people that there are opportunities in hands-on work that is rewarding and satisfying. Her new book series Jenny’s A Jill of All Trades will publish its first edition The Welder in June 2023. We can’t wait to see what comes next for this incredibly talented and smart woman!

Susan sat down with Lana Elco to talk about the Intimate Universe brand that she created and why this is a vital time “to discover new relationship models that can sustain the deepest level of intimacy and embrace the diversity of human personalities in the modern era”. It’s important to recognize that the human experience in our intimate life has morphed greatly from the antiquated times of past. The idea of a mind/body connection is a reality, not just an idea anymore. As we shift toward this paradigm, we can then examine the deeper parts of our physical and emotional transformation as an expanded consciousness in the evolution of relationships and intimacy. Lana offers her clients a new perspective and creative approach by using the Tantric Sacred Union method with the insights of Transpersonal Psychology. This is an incredible conversation and learning for all.

Susan had the great pleasure to chat with Mahara Wayman about rewriting our life story so that we can fulfill the deepest parts of ourself. It isn’t always obvious what that could mean until we have lived a life of exploring career, family, and uncovering the parts of ourself that have been shaped because of the choices made. Mahara has done that and she not only made huge changes to serve this side of herself, she created both a coaching business Mindfulness with Mahara and podcast The Art of Badassery to share it with the world. Her debut book Essential Insights To Living Your Best Life is now available on Amazon. Tune in to hear more about the super badass woman she is and how you can be too!

Susan freestyles her thoughts in this episode about learning from the people in her bereavement groups, holding herself to the same actions that are used in her couples therapy work, and questioning the access people should have to life altering content. When she thinks about asking someone who lost the love of their life to find new activities or discoveries about themself, Susan also takes that challenge to expand her own life. And when she guides couples back toward one another with tools about forgiveness, love, and vulnerability, she also knows her own relationship will improve with that same approach. The best way to make the world a better place is to share, not to put a price on everything. So if you have great advice or wisdom to impart, please give it freely. Your intelligence can make a tremendous difference for those who are not able to afford high priced services. Your time and talent have value when you are leading a person into and through their transformation. Time and place.

Susan sat down with Maureen Kafkis to talk about the moments that sent them both on a journey inward to better understand themselves and wake up to more conscious living. It seems most people live in a semi conscious state, allowing negative thoughts and fears to lead them. All that does is prevent us from being true to ourselves, and free to be genuinely happy. As an occupational therapist, certified life coach, and expert on Brain BS, Maureen’s mission is to motivate people to live more consciously and collaboratively. Sharing means more!

Susan talks about getting the sudden change that we experience when a new job, new romance or the loss of either. It’s wild when life changes overnight and we find ourself diving into projects, work or a relationship. The anticipation and possibilities can blur our vision, remove our boundaries, and create a quiet chaos that will slowly rise within. It might be 2 months or 6 months, but at some point we come up for air to realize that life as we knew it has not only changed, but we have too. Getting lost in this has both reward and disruption. The need to reconnect to ourself and recalibrate to feel grounded is essential, all while still showing up in our newly shaped life.

Susan welcomes Mike Overlie back to the show to talk about his new nonprofit SaveTwo.org that brings dogs and men together. Mike’s mission is “to save the lives of dogs and men, help them connect deeply to heal their wounds, and teach them skills to navigate this world and live better lives”. Mike has his own story of being saved by his dogs as he navigated various life challenges. He also will match men with dogs if they don’t already have one and has partnered with local shelters to completed the circle of saving dogs as well. Mike is an incredible person who understands that most men haven’t been given the emotional skills to handle the messiness that life throws at them. He works individually as well as in group form to help other men harness real confidence to live a happy life. In his book, Let Your Dog Lead, Mike shares his own emotional awakening and how that was a massive life changer. Check out our conversation and his linktree site for great nuggets of wisdom!

Susan sits down with Mike Overlie to continue the conversation about men connecting to their feelings. Susan and Mike dig into the incredible results that occur when men slow down enough to acknowledge what they are feeling, and subsequently what they need. It is true that small steps create great change. And who wouldn’t want to push away the tornado-like chaos in exchange for some peace. Mike points to our relationship with dogs as being a beautiful guide in learning how to move on quickly from the insanity life can throw us. In his book, Let Your Dog Lead, Mike shares his own emotional awakening and how that was a massive life changer. Dogs and Men, Mike’s podcast is also filled with nuggets of wisdom and something for everyone!

Please meet Jenny Crozier!

Susan talks about the importance of showing up! The in-person experience of connecting with others is vital to our health and way more fun. Whether with your work or in your social space, being face to face with people will always present opportunity that can’t be found through digital means. This is not to say those tools don’t provide convenience, but the importance of human connection offers us to use all parts and senses, and adds value in ways that often changes the trajectory of our lives. From thinking, dreaming, creating, and being, when we open ourselves up to have contact with others, it can shape us in ways we hadn’t even considered.

Susan talks about the dangerous tango couples get into when winning and defending are more important than loving one another. Criticism does not go well in relationships, but turning toward one another’s bids for attention, affection, and connection is the glue that holds them together. We all have bad days, when we need extra love and support. Learning to take a step back, not take things personally, ask for clarification, and then have a healthy dialogue is the way to get started.

Susan had the pleasure to chat with Daphnie Summers, artist, writer, and survivor of childhood sexual abuse. Daphnie’s college studies in psychology deepened her understanding of trauma along with her committed journey to her own healing. Daphnie had the chance to attend the Saprea retreat, a program designed specifically for women who have experienced childhood sexual trauma. While there, she participated in a Kintsugi bowl exercise which allowed her to see how putting back together the broken parts of a ceramic bowl can provide a greater understanding of how her own broken parts are also reassembled.

Susan talks about being stuck, specifically in an unhappy marriage or partnership, and how normalizing an unhealthy life can be a foolish choice. The longer we stay in undesirable situations, our bodies and brains accept it as the new norm. Susan had the great fortune to sit down with Peleg Top, artist, creative high growth mentor, and spiritual director. Peleg has been in the creative space for many years, starting a branding and design agency that he built and sold, as well as guiding creative leaders in his 100 Days of Creative High Growth program. He is a soul artist, guiding his students to ground themselves in knowing themselves. He knows that the single relationship truly central in life is the one to yourself.

In an encore episode, Susan discusses romantic love, and knowing when to repair vs end a relationship. It can be tricky when your long-term partner seems distant and the connection feels broken. Are you being seen, heard, and understood? It’s critical to recognize the signs of self-betrayal vs the need to recalibrate your love, together.

Susan continues her conversation with John Weiman in part 2 about going from the darkness to an incredible second chance. Post liver transplant, John has his work cut out for him to survive while making huge life changes. Susan chats with John Weiman about the lies we are told that shape us. When we go from childhood to adulthood with so many false stories, it takes us on a wild ride of not knowing who we are or how to behave, with ourselves and others. From a lack of boundaries and self-worth to bad marriages and hitting rock bottom, these detours can reveal our truest version, but only if we survive the fall. Tune in to hear part 1 of John’s detour and how he pulled himself up from his own death trap.

Susan sits down with Melissa Deally to learn how her two daughters back to back concussions opened up a whole new world to their approach to wellness. When Melissa suddenly lost her job of many years and was taking care of her kids' injuries, the deep dive into the ‘why’s’ sent her on a journey of healing them and herself in the interim. Melissa’s curiosity about brain health revealed holistic options and philosophies for healing, and well one thing led to another and then another. We never know where our life challenges will lead us, but if we let that adventure flourish it can become the purpose we are seeking.

It was such a treat to chat with Beth Blaney, CEO and mastermind of BBA Bookkeeping. Beth’s mission is to serve as the backbone of your business so you can get to the next level and achieve the success you envision. As any entrepreneur might recall, getting started is both scary and exciting, so I wanted to talk to Beth because she knows how to get you set up and organized in ways you might not have considered. The cool part is that I also had the chance to learn how and why she got into the business - a solid, familiar, real and relatable story of tenacity and determination. Beth Blaney built her business on smarts and grit! She’s unique, unapologetic, and super fun!

Denise Belisle is a serenity and emotional intelligence expert guiding people back to themselves. Whether life has shifted because of the empty nest or simply a change that creates more time, we must recreate ourselves for continued satisfaction. Susan chats with Denise about the evolution that we all experience with years spent living this life. We not only need to look at our own self, to understand who we are or have become, but it would be equally smart to look at your partner/spouse to consider the changes and brilliance that have reshaped them. We repeat mistakes until we learn the lesson. Susan chats with Kelly Keville who knows that well. From codependence to independence, it was a journey that bounced Kelly around a bit but in the end gave her the confidence and strength to own her life. She conquered fears about herself that truly provided the landscape for the freedom she has today. Kelly supports and coaches single Mom’s to shine bright and tell their story, and she’s doing it both through the written word as a storyteller and on her newly debuted podcast Your Story of Magnificent Color + Light. Kelly runs writing workshops for collaborative, multi-authored books and she invites you to share your story. It’s an adventure in healing and setting yourself free.

Susan chats with Shelly Drymon about redesigning her life after 50 and showing up for other women to do the same. Shelly’s professional life included years as a Social Worker supporting children in the welfare system, along with her ability to seek out grants and private funding for a host of programs to serve girls and restorative justice. Shelly knows the importance of being a guiding light for others and now she is shining that light on her own life and leading by example. Mike Overlie and Indigo are back on Dreams and Detours to continue the conversation about men connecting to their feelings. I had the great pleasure to chat with Dave Menz, a self-made man who dreamt about entrepreneurship as a kid. Dave experienced struggle and hardship early on but he never took his eyes off the prize. His tenacity and constant curiosity paid off as he found his calling in owning laundromats. Dave also knew that bringing a service business to the community meant ‘people first’ and that success would follow with this business model. It certainly has!

Susan discusses romantic love and knowing when to repair vs end a relationship. It can be tricky when your long-term partner seems distant and the connection feels broken. Are you being seen, heard, and understood? It’s critical to recognize the signs of self-betrayal vs the need to recalibrate your love, together.

Knowing when to resign can be tough. Having the hard conversation with yourself requires a real introspection and a solid plan. It’s not an easy decision, but if the opportunity to grow and thrive does not exist in your current position, then finding a meaningful opportunity is essential. We dishonor ourselves when we find ways to just cope. As a coach, I help people navigate these channels, and I share some advice on how you can get started.

If repetition allows one to master a skill or concept, imagine what the outcome of negative reinforcement can do to a young person who is just trying to make sense of themselves and the world around them. We are all doing the best we can to create a good life. Some of us did not have good role models growing up, and even worse may have been given the wrong messaging about our worth as a person. There is nothing like a traumatic life event to crack open all parts of our being. Susan chats with Jolyn Armstrong about the sudden call she got one day that her son was arrested. In that moment, her life was forever changed as her son faced incarceration. Jolyn didn’t just survive that experience, she was determined to thrive, and has since created GrapeVine Mindware, a trauma-focused coaching program for those who find themselves in a similar crisis, unable to cope, and in need of resources.

They discuss the state of the aging population in prisons, including LGBTQ+, who have their own set of challenges. Overall, the message is clear: love is love and whether in an actual prison or not, we must embrace the wisdom of our aging humans and show more compassion for one another.

When we are paralyzed by fear, we feel left out and stuck in place. This past year has been transformative for some and brutal for others. Being brave isn’t being fearless. Being brave means knowing there will be pain and discomfort but doing it anyway. It takes courage to reach for your dreams, so don’t stop believing in yourself.

We are all artists. Self-expression comes in many forms, and for some, it is directly linked to their identity: performer, writer, musician, painter, creator.
This week, Susan talks about the artist in all of us and the importance of unleashing our inner ideas. The alternative can be inner demons.

We don’t get a playbook in life, so the idea that we should know what we want and who we are at an early age is crazy. Change is scary and exciting. When we make the choice to interrupt life as we know it, we are no longer leaving it to fate. Alex Biondo did just that: she took agency of her life so that she and her daughter could live happily. Sounds simple, but as we all know, life is never that simple. And neither is dating in mid-life!

This week Susan shares the voices of several people who share their take on love. This week’s episode is an encore play of a conversation that I had with Kim Davis last year. Alison Bull joins Susan to talk about the importance of investing in ourselves: time, money and attention. It is okay to ask for help, to know when a task is outside of our expertise, and to take a walk to restore our sanity. Talk is cheap, action is crucial.

Susan sits down with Elizabeth Green, British expat and newly published author. Elizabeth shares her former life back in the U.K. and the unrest she felt most of her life. After years of marriage and raising three children, Elizabeth moved to NYC, opened a restaurant called Planted, and wrote her memoir. She proves that it’s never too late to get what you want out of this life – you just need to take the leap.

It has been a messy and strange year. Life was already challenging, now we have an added layer of discomfort. I think our suffering is connecting us, and that might be a very good thing. When we recognize that we are more alike than not, that’s when we can start to really see each other. Do you see what I mean?

When we hide behind our screens, we become a version of ourselves that exists only in that virtual space. We speak freely, feel audacious, and perhaps even bold enough to reveal some of our deepest desires. It’s exciting to freely express ourselves, but when that illusory persona gets tangled in reality, it’s messy. We need more real connection, not less. Honesty saves everyone’s time.

Susan speaks with Tamar Weinberg about coming out of a dark period in her life after having her children. Susan speaks to Elyse Berkman about growing up in rural Pennsylvania and being the only Jewish family in town. She was bullied and yet her childhood obesity was not the focus of that taunting, but her religious features that set her apart. Elyse moved to NYC in her 20’s and felt at home culturally and within time, physically as well. Her journey to create a life she could love took time, patience, and bravery.

When we surround ourselves with kind and loving people, it changes the outcome of our lives. Letting go of people who are bad for us can be uncomfortable. Sometimes we don’t even give ourselves permission to consider this option. Building your tribe means hand-picking those who you want close, and letting the rest go.

Communication in every relationship is vital. When we withhold our feelings, especially anger, hurt, or disappointment, resentment starts to grow. And like a fire, it is wild and damaging. Too much salt, not enough salt. Just add water. When we cook, we are looking for a tasty balance. As we navigate life, we need to do that same dance. Susan records from her beach vacation where she is restoring her own balance, recalibrating her mind and body to get back to center. Every choice we make either keeps us steady or tips the scale. It goes beyond food and includes all that we consume and believe to be true.

Touch is essential to humans. Susan shares how this epidemic has restricted our ability to be physically connected and where that leaves us. For many, our wellbeing is dependent on touch, and the loss of it can add to the grief we are already experiencing. Navigating our need for human contact can feel like tiptoeing through a field of landmines.

Susan is known for saying ‘we find ourselves in other people’s stories’ because that was her truth. Self-exploration feels like a surgical procedure, examining and cutting out the broken parts, in order to feel normal and live fully. Life is hard, and even through the pitfalls, we learn who we are and what we are made of. We revisit the first Dreams and Detours episode that is as relevant today.
New York native Daniel Joshua Rubin finds that life in Hollywood is not all it’s cracked up to be. Expressing his creativity was a principle Daniel was encouraged to do from a young age. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, he learned early that if you’re going to do something, do it right! This included having an Orthodox Bar Mitzvah even though his family were not religious. Daniel has been a storyteller for over 30 years, getting his start at Steppenwolf Theater in Chicago, with plays produced in Chicago, NYC and London, before heading to LA where he wrote for popular television series on NBC and WB networks. He has collaborated with award-winning artists, further shaping his craft. In the end, Dan walked away from the glitz of Hollywood and shares why it’s not so glamorous after all and what he's discovered instead.

Trauma can come from a variety of sources, including violence, assault, war, prison, and abuse. Layered like an onion, trauma can root itself so deep that it sticks to our genes, impacting not just ourselves, but future generations. The reverberations and consequences are playing out in our communities, in our world, and it needs to be treated, right now.

Bright side. Silver lining. Pinhole of light. We are all looking for the good during a time when life feels grim. There is no one right answer. Being resilient, turning inward and toward our own instincts is the gift we are getting from this disruptive experience. Be mindful of how you are investing your time and energy. Be kind to yourself.

It’s all in the way we respond to life. We can be defensive or anxious, and that adds more chaotic energy to the mix. Or we can breathe, remain calm and think about what we want out of the messiness that is happening. That will infuse slow and steady balance to uncertain times. Susan shares her recent dark moments and ways in which we can support each other.

This week’s episode is a discussion about being raised with violence and fear. In my conversation with Kim Davis, we share what that looked like and sounded like, and how our stories about our fathers are so alarmingly similar. After recovering our value and sense of self, healing the physical parts in order to feel whole takes time. Tune-in as we share what it feels like to come out on the other side as a Warrior, not just a survivor.

Susan Montanaro, host of Dreams & Detours shares her perspective on being who you were meant to be and not letting life bury you. When our fire has been dampened by another or self-sabotage, our lives are often filled with discomfort and dis-ease. We are meant to bloom naturally, and when we don’t allow ourselves that freedom, it’s almost as if we are not fully breathing or living at all.

In this episode we hear from New York native Daniel Joshua Rubin that life in Hollywood is not all it’s cracked up to be.

Dreams and Detours is a show about the life we thought we were going to have vs the the one we are living. We all have a story. I share mine and I speak to others about following their dreams, or getting derailed entirely. And then getting back up again.
Life is hard and messy and joyful.
The choices we make in our 20's and 30's are not always the ones we want to stick with in our 40's or 50's. Inevitably we come to crossroads, more often then not. If we let fear hold us back, the result can be tremendous dissatisfaction. But if we take the leap toward our dreams, well then, the adventure really begins.
