At the age of 22, Salma wrote her first poem, Oppandham, as an outlet for her frustration and anger with her situation. Forced to hide her passion from her family, she would write while sitting on the toilet, on pieces of paper ripped from calendars and notebooks. She was subjected to abuse because of her desire to write and her family members would often destroy her work if they found it. Her mother eventually helped her by smuggling out poems from her home and getting them published in a Tamil weekly.

She explains how this method of teaching in small groups can be done by anyone, for any hobby or interest they pursue, with just 2 hours of time set aside and without any marketing!
We talk about the uniqueness of her sessions wherein maids/helpers all join the learning process. She shares her plan to make her website and Youtube into Hindi also, as currently a lot of people who do not know English are learning baking through the pictures and how she shows what needs to be done! And she reiterates the need to bust the myth around bread making being complex and how she has been doing it over the years. She calls the people who learnt baking from her, her baking family!
We end with the question on making time and balancing this passion with her career demands , considering the seniority of her role - and this will be addressed in the next episode.

What the New Indian Woman podcast is about
As you may already be aware, this podcast has 2 focus areas. One, We examine the challenges faced by today's Indian woman and propose ACTIONABLE strategies in the Indian context, on a wide variety of topics - right from identifying their passion to better productivity and parenting. Second, we meet women who chose to aspire or have a dream beyond their defined roles and facilitate sharing of what worked and what didn’t, for them. Today's episode falls in the first category.
And in the process, my aim is to help you, The New Indian woman, to realize your potential, chase your dreams and aspirations, utilize the wonderful opportunities available in today's world.
What's in this episode:
Writing down how she spent the day, for a continuous period of time, proved difficult for her. At the same time she made immense learnings from it. What is that learning ? You will be surprised on what she found and what she decided to do about it. Would you want to do this yourself ?
What does it mean to come back from work and realize you have to start cooking dinner while the husband can relax around - this is a familiar story, isnt it? But would you have expected this to be the story in the US ?
She talks about the patterns we all get into, of making sure all our responsibilities are done, to the best of our abilities, so that no one around can criticize, before we are convinced to take a break. How to change this pattern? How did she do it, in a joint family, where gender roles are predefined ?
She moves on to talk about how she was being affected by the irritation expressed by family members over the state of the house, of the clutter and such stuff. And how, it took her some time to decide that they need to handle their irritation themselves - she need not think that she should avoid or resolve these. She shares something that really worked for her, in terms of reminding herself every day - such a small, but powerful action. This is something all of us will really find useful.
And again, how she decides to step out of a situation when it really becomes difficult to handle. She shares about all the questions such situations trigger in her and how she decides to acknowledge the anger she feels and tell herself it is OK to be angry. And how selfcare and having someone just to vent, is really helpful. She also shares what didn’t work for her and with professional help, how she had to adopt different techniques to handle the same.
And she summarizes it well by saying it is not about winning or having an upper hand over her mother in law, but about having a good and happy life. This involves a lot of give and take and clarity on which battles you really want to win.
I liked her take on these 2 points especially - about the daughter in law expected to bring happiness into the family and this constant question of would my in laws do this to their own daughter. You should really listen to her articulation of these 2 points.
And the one point she wanted to share with all listeners - Don’t forget to look after yourself!
Most of us may be able to relate to the above challenges in one way or the other. The reflections of the guest and the techniques that worked for her may serve as a good prompt for us and help us in our own journeys.

And in the process, my aim is to help you, The New Indian woman, to realize your potential, chase your dreams and aspirations, utilize the wonderful opportunities available in today's world.
What's in this episode:
We start with our guest of the day talking about the concept of joint family in the US and why it is important to understand the challenges this particular aspect itself brings forth.
We discuss the additional burden of expectation to fit in, as a daughter in law and how this manifests in daily life. She shares a few examples of this, about certain fixed mindsets, about certain unstated expectations from the daughter in law leading to questions like when do the in laws want to be independent and when do they want help or additional care ?
She talks about constantly trying to watch very closely to figure out what is required vs what doesn’t work for her and what to do then. We discuss there is no such thing as we have figured out how this works and how it is a constant process. This tightrope walking leads to a lot of stress in one's daily life.
She talks about how she found this extremely stressful and how she decided to take professional help. She shares how they have got to a point of living in a harmonious state where there are differences, but they have learnt to navigate the waters without creating tsunamis.
She talks about the scenarios when for unstated reasons her mother in law would get upset and how she used to try to talk it out, apologize etc earlier. And how, after a lot of reflection, she has chosen to respond differently to the same triggers by thinking through, acknowledging and accepting her mother in laws right to have her own feelings and more importantly, there is no need to try to solve this - to believe that her mother in law can resolve her problems herself.
We discuss about such crucial points and the importance of being aware, of reflecting and making the choice of responding or not responding to the trigger. We also talk about this constant overarching need to respect and love the in-laws as husband's parents and the acknowledgement that they are not one's own parents.
We get into other practical techniques that she adopted and here, she starts talking about not getting time for herself in her busy schedule, caring for all and carrying out her responsibilities in her various roles.
Most of us may be able to relate to the above challenges in one way or the other. The reflections of the guest and the techniques that worked for her may serve as a good prompt for us and help us in our own journeys.

What could be the other perspectives from which this relationship can be examined ?
While open communication always scores high in all relationship issues, what about the so many things that cannot be talked about ?
What are the top things that you would ask your mother in law to stop doing or start doing ? What about the things you will start or stop doing to her ?
The answers shared in the episode will surprise you.
We move on to questions around having third person to help examine issues in an objective manner and the importance of the same.
And then, the very difficult question around seeing the mother in law as a separate person and to highlight her admirable qualities.
These discussions are intended to let us understand and appreciate these perspectives. Plus, these should be prompts for us to examine our own context.

Yes, what planning technique works for me, is the topic of this episode.
We start with why plan at all, the various views around planning and planning of what ? I share why I like planning and then a quick introduction on how planning is important. Yes, it need not be boring. And planning is not about making you do more things!
I introduce you to the Getting Things Done methodology, popularly called GTD. I explain how I use GTD in my day to day life and how it helps me. This episode is meant to be a pointer to this technique so that you can find out more from the GTD book by David Allen or podcasts or videos on this topic. It is a very interesting journey to which I am happy to invite you. Listen on..

And in the process, my aim is to help you, The New Indian woman, to realize your potential, chase your dreams and aspirations, utilize the wonderful opportunities available in today's world.
What's in this episode:
We start the episode probing into why plan at all. If you believe planning is not for you, then you may be a bit disappointed to know you are already planning your day to day life, though you may actually be thinking you are not!
I am of the view that it is very important to plan what we want/have to do, when and how. Why ? It gives us a lot of options and it makes us more aligned to seeing challenges as opportunities - the one most common thing shared by all guests on this podcast. Most importantly, planning allows us to be intentional with time.
We get into why planning is not the same as having to do lists. In our earlier episodes, we have focussed on Goal setting, Yearly, Monthly and Quarterly Planning, about Crafting Ideal Day and even about Planners.
How to plan ? This is where I get into a short story of coming across a very useful article by David Allen and later reading the book Getting Things Done.
I focus on explaining the gist of how I apply GTD in my life - of course, this is not a comprehensive way of using GTD. The purpose of this episode is to introduce you to the topic of GTD.
The fundamental principle being "The mind is for having ideas, not holding them".
We look at the Capture, Clarify, Organize, Engage and Review components and what needs to be done in each stage and how I do it. We also look at the famous 2 minute rule.
We look at the various lists - SomeDay Maybe, Waiting For, Projects and the quintessential Next Action Lists based on contexts, apart from the Calendar. I explain how I use this both in the home and work context.
GTD is not just about these lists alone - it is a principle which starts with these. And there are so many more principles to examine. The key is how you understand and apply this to your life.
Hope you enjoy this episode. I welcome you to read up more on GTD and start experiencing the benefits. Please write to me at krishna@thenewindianwoman.com or reach out to our social media pages to share your views on this episode.

In this episode, we explore how our day to day activities are influenced by our gender. Not at workplace, but in our own homes. Broadly we may be aware of what is the primary role each family member is playing in the house. Many fall into the area of shared responsibilities. But still, are there things you do in your house only because you are a woman ?
You may wonder why this question should be examined. It is very easy to talk about equality at workplace, equality everywhere. But what about our own families ? Are you aware if gender influences what you do ? We may all be aware of the undue load of invisible work on the woman - managing home and a job, taking care of the children or elderly and what not. Quite often, we may think we have distributed the responsibilities in our own homes and it is a fair game. But, is it ?
I speak to women across various age groups and profiles probing a few questions - whether there is a gender based distribution of work at home ? What is the one thing they would want out of their plate, if they had an option - the one thing that is on them because of being a woman ? What is it they expect from their family or extended family members in terms of better understanding the additional responsibilities carried out as a woman ?
At the end of this episode, you may want to ask some of these questions to yourself. Why ?

What's in this episode:
Same questions, posed to women of different age groups, profiles and life stages. It is interesting to see some things common, affecting every woman. It is also interesting to see how perspectives differ and sometimes, how the seemingly smallest of things can be such a big bother for them.
One important common observation for me was about how this question was new for all of them - most of them started stating there are no gender based roles, yes, in their own ways. But when probed further. One could make out they were shouldering additional home maintenance responsibilities just because they are women. Sometime there was almost a denial, stating what is done is based on who is skilled at what. And sometimes, there was just plain acceptance, resigning to the fact this is how it is going to be.
It would be very interesting to ask these questions to yourself and openly, without any bias or any attempts to defend, examine your feelings towards this. You may even want to examine a list of what all you do. You may think there is no point in examining this, but do remember, there are or will be children around you, who will imbibe this and accept this as the default. So, you examining these questions and talking about it, as always, would be a good starting point.
There is an interesting article on this topic, albeit in the western contex.t I am not sure of the solution proposed in this context, but I feel it is a good read. This is about a lady who came up with a Shit I do excel and realized it is huge, she came up with this when she felt there was a huge amount of invisible work done by her - https://www.fastcompany.com/90419266/this-game-can-help-you-divide-household-duties-and-emotional-labor-fairly#:~:text=As%20Rodsky%20began%20to%20mull,provider%20was%20taking%20its%20toll.

Homeschooling is not about children doing online schooling from home. Well, what is it exactly ? In this episode, we meet Pranuti Satyadass, who has experience in homeschooling her kids and who guides other parents in this journey.
If you already know about homeschooling, this episode will help clarify more. We explore several questions around the benefits, challenges and what it takes to homeschool your children.
This is a very important topic that you, as a New Indian Woman, would benefit from knowing about, even if you think this topic is not relevant for you.
So, listen on..
What the New Indian Woman podcast is about

And in the process, my aim is to help you, The New Indian woman, to realize your potential, chase your dreams and aspirations, utilize the wonderful opportunities available in today's world.
What's in this episode:
Pranuti starts with explaining what homeschooling really means, with parents being the main facilitators and in charge of their children's education with the children not being affiliated to any institute.
We get into the typical trigger points for parents opting for homeschooling for their children. Pranuti talks about the top 2 reasons for her - to focus on the strengths of her children and to ensure they spend a lot of time with each other. She also shares the other reasons why parents typically take up this decision.
She talks about using one's resources in the best way possible for one's children - in terms of time, money, engagement and energy.
Pranuti goes on to share about how this is generally perceived by people who are not aware of homeschooling and how the situation has improved over the past decade, but it still remains a bold step.
Pranuti then discusses the top questions asked by parents, be it around the board exams, about future prospects and social life and goes on to dispel the myths around each of these.
We then discuss about how a typical day would be and how by lunch time the academics part of the day is over!
We get on to discuss the challenges around doing this when both parents are working and even examine the feasibility of homeschooling. She then clarifies how one can talk about conventional schooling vs homeschooling, how the parent becomes more knowledgeable during this journey and how the parent facilitates the involvement of tutors as required and how the parent's focus on finding a way out keeping the child's best interests, helps.
When it comes to older children, we examine some of the techniques required to handle their aspirations, be it in terms of trying out conventional schooling and helping them with decision making and being accountable. We also discuss when would be the best time to start homeschooling.
Pranuti then shares the number of homeschoolers in a city like Bangalore and how this is catching up across India.
Pranuti poses a set of very valid questions that should help us think through, for the sake of the children in our lives.
Hope you enjoyed knowing more about home schooling.

The final part of this 3 part series with Prof. Jayanthasri Balakrishnan is for the woman who is having older children who may suddenly feel redundant in their lives. In Part 1, i.e. episode 57, we examined questions pertaining to women in their 20s to 30s and in Part 2, we focused upon women in their 30s to 40s.
If you haven't heard about the very popular Prof, Jayanthasri Balakrishnan, I am very happy for this podcast to introduce her and her thoughts to you!
We talk a lot about parenting of a different kind, where parenting as a primary responsibility comes down and the need for women to adapt to this phase in life. Dr. Jayanthasri guides us for this phase of life with very simple examples.
So, listen on..

What's in this episode:
Dr. Jayanthasri starts off with how we all learnt cycling without the side wheels, but how we have become the side wheels for our children, creating a lot of noise! She highlights the importance of teaching them how to go.
She conveys the importance of having parenting as an important chapter in the book of our life, but without that being the only chapter.
She says distancing ourselves from our children is the best we can do for them. It is important for them to make mistakes, but to know that we, as parents, are there for them. They should feel confident about that, about being able to come back to the parents, not with a sense of guilt, but with a sense of apology.
She talks about how, as a parent, you can be absent and can still make the child feel your presence. She also conveys the need for parents to understand the role of a custodian vs being a controller.
Then we start talk about renewing the relationship with the partner, wherein Dr. Jayanthasri, talks about the importance of nurturing it throughout one's life. She narrates a few examples from her life, where the challenges of daily life seemed to raise many issues and the kind of help and perspective she received and how these are important in a relationship.
As we wind up, she shares the biggest virtue, its not about Forgive and Forget, but something much more, to lead a satisfied life, with its ups and downs.
I enjoyed interacting with her and listening to her inputs across the various life stages. How about you ?

Part 2 of this 3 part series with Prof. Jayanthasri Balakrishnan is for the woman who is likely to be in the busiest stage of her life, taking big long term decisions about her life, lifestyle and parenting choices. In Part 1, i.e. episode 57, we examined questions pertaining to women in their 20s to 30s.
If you have'nt heard about the very popular Prof, Jayanthasri Balakrishnan, I am very happy for this podcast to introduce her and her thoughts to you!
We talk a lot about parenting and how a woman's role in parenting is a choice and how she should look it at responsibly. We move on to talking about time, using time especially and she shares 2 important tips to find more time in the 24 hours that we all have.
So, listen on..
What the New Indian Woman podcast is about
As you may already be aware, this podcast has 2 focus areas. Today's episode falls in the second category.
And in the process, my aim is to help you, The New Indian woman, to realize your potential, chase your dreams and aspirations, utilize the wonderful opportunities available in today's world.
What's in this episode:
We start with the topic of being busy and using "busyness" as an excuse for just about surviving, trying to figure out all the important decisions to be made at this stage in life. Dr. Jayanthasri talks about how parenting is a responsibility where there is no proxy parenting, no part time parenting, no perfect parenting either. There is no charity about taking care of one's own child, there need not be a sense of sacrifice, because it is a choice.
The points covered include the importance of giving room for a child's independence despite all the arrogance and seemingly audacious behaviour from the child, due to the challenges of age. At the same time, she cautions us not to try to become your child's friend. She highlights the importance of listening to the child, even if you are not entertaining the same idea. She also explains the danger of us not taking this important responsibility seriously.
She says the sense of parenting cannot be changed with time, while the expressions change with time, over generations. She then explains to us about intuition and instinct and how parenting includes both.
Prof. Jayanthasri then goes on to talk about this notion of sacrificing for one's children and she says people who talk about sacrifice are people who cannot come out of a sense of selfpity. A mother will be a better mother if she stops talking about sacrifice, because any way she is wired that way.
She then goes on to explain her concept of time - not about creating or managing time, but using time, valuing time. And then she shares 2 tips for making best use of one's time.
She then narrates an incident in her life and how she should have forgotten and forgiven her son for something he had said many years ago, but she is unable to. And how she had to be clear on what to focus upon.
She shares her philosophy about using time very carefully, a philosophy that has not changed in the last 20 years!
Don’t' you want to know it ?
I wish I had the opportunity to listen to her talks when I was in this life stage! But then, I realize there are learnings for me that I can apply to my life, now! So, do give this episode a listen.

We welcome the New Year with a 3 part series of interactions with Prof. Jayanthasri Balakrishnan. Her motivational talks, specifically focusing on women have been quite popular for many years now. It is a true honor to have Prof. Jayanthasri on New Indian Woman podcast.
In Part 1, we address questions pertaining to women in the 20s to 30s, who is likely to be starting on so many new things in life -a career, a relationship, a family and so on. The idea in this episode is to get Prof. Jayanthasri's guidance on how a young Indian woman should go about identifying her own freedom and rights. This is a long episode, for, her thoughts on this age group are so powerful and we got into the details of many aspects. I did not want to edit the episode just for the sake of brevity. The points here are so valuable. Regardless of the age, you will find pointers that inspire you, that make you think and even trigger some actions.

What's in this episode:
Prof. Jayanthasri starts talking about entitlement and the danger of freedom without accountability. She talks about the importance of understanding that whatever we enjoy today has been given to us by people who walked before us. They could not even dream of what we have today. She explains why it is important to know this, have a sense of accountability, to give to women who will come after us. She talks about how this is true for all kinds of independence, political, social, academic and so on.
And based on this thought, she explains how we may misinterpret entitlement, for empowerment. She feels it is the onus of all is us to make the question of freedom vs entitlement, irrelevant, in future. And she explains how freedom and autonomy are different. And how this sense of accountability changes you as a person, regardless of your gender. Your thought, your vocabulary and finally, your actions. She gives practical tips on how this journey starts, regardless of the age of the person. She goes on to explain how this is different from education as we know it, how this has to come from inside.
We then move on to the topic of aspirations, and she says aspirations do not change over generations, they just express themselves in a different way. She explains the difference between desire and dream and why it is important to know the difference. She talks about how it is important to use true education to start from a point of desire, to chisel your dream, to shape it, with a lot of patience and then form an action plan for the dream.
She goes on to how she considers present day parents have either become supermarkets or doormats for their children. The importance of goodness has been lost and hence aspirations have turned into entitlement. Focus on comfort has been detrimental. She talks about the importance of going back to understanding these differences.
We then discuss the importance of being grounded. She stresses the importance of this in terms of how you can become your dream through this. And talks about the need to think about one's society as the starting point for this. Without the grounding, it will be just desires hanging in mid air. Prof. Jayanthasri gives many practical examples of this, on how children naturally are inclined towards being grounded. And the importance of making children have roles in the family and giving them responsibilities.
And then she goes on to talk about the importance of young women starting from their own homes first, having cultural sophistication and here also, she gives real life examples that one can relate to. She takes the example of a pupa's transformation to a butterfly and explains how each one has to figure out the realities and adapt for the same and in that process build resilience. She explains the importance of understanding life as a package - one cannot remove what one doesn’t like and customize with one's own desires.
She explains the importance of seeing challenges as opportunities which one has to approach in a unique manner. She says if one is grounded, one is likely to look around and be thankful for many things. And then she explains how each of these could be good starting points.
I am convinced my summary doesn’t do any justice to Prof. Jayanthasri's articulation in a very clear and crisp manner. I invite you to listen to this episode fully and learn from it.

What's in this episode:
In this episode also, there are 3 questions I focus on, with both the guests, as relevant. What are the top 3 things they do to manage work and home well as a woman, their top productivity tip and about child care options.
Our guest who is a lecturer in an engineering college, talks about the need to be systematic and well organized. Later we delve into the details of what this means, from a day to day perspective. She talks about the importance of spending time with the family and seeking their support. She also goes into how simple and small steps can make a huge difference in our quality of daily life.
Her top productivity tip is not any specific tool - but about the mind. And how to change your guilt feeling about not spending enough time with the family.
She shares how the demands of the time only increase when the children grow older. She then goes on to talk about the importance of not being in separate worlds!
We discuss the child care options or the lack of them and here she shares the struggles she went through and what worked for her and how she had to adapt continuously to cater to the child care situation.
She talks about the importance of understanding if the workplace environment is hostile, telling us there are lot of opportunities if one is intelligent and competent enough.
She goes on to share more details of the kind of challenges she went through and how she had to take professional help. She says the advice that helped her the most is about the need to accept that one cannot change others.
She stresses the importance of self-care, open communication and the need to adapt and accept things with more maturity. Plus, identifying where one needs help and then asking for the same.
Then, we move on to someone who is working in a senior position in IT with a son in college. To the same questions, her response is about support system, importance of nurturing ourselves and to keep learning always. Her productivity tip is again very different and it is all around the awareness of what works best for oneself.
On child care, she shares how it is important to work towards building a support system. I cannot agree more when she says, it will not come and sit in your life.
It was interesting to also hear about their take on the guilty feeling that moms who are pursuing careers often go through.
These discussions are intended to let us understand and appreciate these perspectives. Plus, these should be prompts for us to examine our own challenges.

What's in this episode:
There are 3 questions I focus on, in this episode, with all the 3 guests, as relevant. What are the top 3 things they do to manage work and home well as a woman, their top productivity tip and about child care options.
Ramya talks about how we try to create this perfect wife or daughter in law image which is not sustainable and then she talks about what is the most effective way to do the balancing. And she indeed has a very different productivity tip.
Then we meet someone who has a toddler and the challenges only increase and are of a different order. She talks about her priority of spending quality time with her toddler and that influencing everything in her day. We see her stretching her hours to make sure she is able to get time with her toddler. Her top productivity tip is also influenced by this perspective. And then, we focus on child care options available and the challenges around that and how money doesn’t seem to help matters. There is some wishful thinking also here. We also talk about her expectation from other members of the family. I wonder what would that be for you ?
We proceed with the same questions with someone who has slightly older children, of early school going age. She shares about her journey and how she had to decide to switch off from work when she spends time with her kids. She shares her reflection on how she and her husband had to become aware of, discuss and let go of something that was affecting them a lot. She also shares her productivity tip and what she struggles with. The child care option that she engaged in and the challenges therein are also interesting to note.
These discussions are intended to let us understand and appreciate these perspectives. Plus, these should be prompts for us to examine our own challenges.

Radhika starts off explaining why she had to leave her first career and the factors that influenced the decision. She talks about how our perspectives change based on our roles and what has been the mantra for her to help in the decision making process. She has an interesting response to my question on whether it was assumed she will leave her career, as is common in many households.
She talks about experiencing the little joys of staying at home in the initial months and what triggered her to look for jobs again.
Then she goes on to clarify what led her to ask her property manager for job options and those initial feelings of wanting to start a business on her own. Like many other women featured in this podcast, she grabbed every opportunity that came her way and looked at innovative ways of approaching people, when faced with a NO.
Not just that, during the pandemic, she went all out to start a business, seeing an opportunity in the hit many businesses were experiencing during the lockdowns.
Radhika then goes on to share her thoughts at that time, identifying what one needs the most during such a transition, the learnings around the transition itself, the role of confidence and what triggered her to be active and engaged. She talks about the what she learnt from the women around her and what she thinks every individual should do.
The message she shares for young women, is very practical and well though through - you would find these very useful.

Her foray into the world of design has always been with a lot of intention - trying to relate to the larger world we live in. She talks about how she single handedly went around the city talking in all kinds of forums about composting - and this was more than 20 years back!
She talks about trying to go by intuition and looking at patterns of how society works and the need to insert a lever in a strategic place, to create an impact.
She goes on talk about the importance of aesthetics in the design and how the design is different when done by a woman.
We talk about how she brought the waste bin to the balcony and made it look beautiful, while focussing on composting. And then she says something very powerful - the need for subtle/understated elements and how this is not perceived as a threat.
She moves on to talk about a different kind of freedom when one starts something new after 40. She also explains how this product influenced the lives of potters, about being open about the design and then she asks us to examine waste from a very different perspective.
Poonam explains the concept behind sending only 10% waste outside the house and how this can influence the health of the family. At the same time, she highlights the need for newer community based models what will facilitate more free time for women without impacting health of the family.
She explains how one can never know everything and hence it is important to start!
Poonam shares how important it is for us to adapt to our scenarios and figure out what we can do, despite our own challenges. We go on to talk about the importance of choosing not to fight some battles and here she shares some tips that will definitely help all of us and a very important message for us.

What the New Indian Woman podcast is about
As you may already be aware, this podcast has 2 focus areas. One, We examine the challenges faced by today's Indian woman and proposes ACTIONABLE strategies in the Indian context, on a wide variety of topics - right from identifying their passion to better productivity and parenting. Second, We meet women who chose to aspire or have a dream beyond their defined roles and facilitates sharing of what worked and what didn’t, for them. Today's episode falls in the second category.
And in the process, my aim is to help you, The New Indian woman, to realize your potential, chase your dreams and aspirations, utilize the wonderful opportunities available in today's world.
What's in this episode:
Uma talks about why she decided to negotiate even though she had only rejection letters in her kitty. She shares her frustration about the bank not valuing any of her 9 years' experience and offering to employ her as a fresher. But again, she decided to concede defeat in the negotiation, but made sure that she took it upon herself to prove to them they were wrong. She talks about how she felt it is her responsibility to move up the fast lane.
She shares about her conversation with her supervisors on this and them giving her a promotion within 1.5 years. She narrates the challenges at workplace and how she decided to use all her skills to make herself more visible, apart from the core job requirements. She then goes on to talk about how she shared with her family on her resolution and clarified how she expected them to support her. She explains why it is important for women to stop self-criticism.
Prior to that she had to make arrangements to resume her job and that meant making herself more redundant at home, expecting her children to handle many things. And like, we have heard with so many other inspiring women in our podcast, she called out for help, from her husband.
Uma talks about how to make support systems work, how striving for perfection is not something to feel proud of and she also tells us her secret behind managing work and home - and this one is going to surprise you.
If this makes you think it is all work and no play….. Uma surprises us again by saying she is a fun loving person and we have a good laugh over her interests and hobbies. And then she says bye with a beautiful message to all and surprise, surprise, a wonderful song.

What's in this episode:
Uma talks about an interesting learning experience that she had right at the start of her career. It was something so bad that it affected her a great deal. But she chose to learn from it and acknowledge it, to the extent that even in this podcast she starts off by talking about it.
She talks about the challenges of singlehandedly managing the house and her young kid and that too in the days before Internet and mobile and her decision to take up Voluntary retirement at the age of 29.
The following period is about adjusting to the role of stay at home mom, without being able to handle the expectations typical of women in Indian households. She talks about how this affected her. This particular part will be relatable to most of the listeners. But then, she talks about how she decided to approach it and what she did about it. We discuss this thru the day to day scenarios that we all face, knowing the intention but still facing challenges at the same time.
She talks about the trappings of being indispensable at home, choosing to add more and more things and the tendency to keep busy.
Then she goes on to talk about her decision to join the workforce again and how she faced rejections one after the other, with people not even ready to interview her!
And then, this particular bank, the experience made her brush aside her inhibitions to call up her old friend to find out the reasons for rejection. And then, she talks about the interview and then her choice to negotiate for a better role.
We will continue her journey in the next episode.

He talks about the kind of steps companies are taking to help us figure our unconscious bias and special steps taken to ensure the wellness, especially of women.
He talks about the biases against people who are not ready to travel and other systemic biases that influence hiring and how this affects women more. He shares research data on how a truly inclusive space improves innovation and profitable growth, on how there is no possibility of growth if 50% of workforce(i.e. women) are excluded.
Mohinish talks about a range of topics, on how it is important not just to focus on women in leadership or have better maternity benefits or policies. What's in this episode:
We discuss the research findings, especially on how on most parameters Indian women are worse off than their global counterparts.
Mohinish explains what every organization should implement for equal work experiences for women - the need for managers to check in with women employees frequently, the need to change the perspective that flex options are not a good career option and of course, the need to change from the age old belief that hard work means long hours. He talks about how performance systems are aligned to credit longer hours and the unconscious bias that exists about the same and how leaders play a very important rule in influencing this bias.
He talks about how the need to be available and connected 24*7 has put additional strain on men as well, but how this has a more dangerous impact for women.
We then move on to recent options around work from near home(WFNH) and the viability of the same. He explains how the pandemic has made organizations realize how remote work can also be effective and how this calls for differentiated views to jobs. He explains how WFNH has also meant options around working from native places or villages and small towns rather than having to live in confined spaces in cities.

What's in this episode:
Dr. Lalitha shares it is quite natural for us to face ups and downs, but the conviction of doing right is what keeps us going. She refers to getting satisfaction out of doing right catering to the needs of others, as selfishness!
She talks about the challenges of raising children without being dependent on the larger family's support, the courage it takes to not send to school and to allow education from the larger community. She surprises us by happily sharing how she and her husband played only a small part in their children's education.
Then she talks about the financial aspects, how they were fortunate to be in a position where they just had to focus on themselves and not the larger family. At the same time she once again surprises us by sharing how they choose to use the fellowship they received to give salaries to staff. We see the positiveness in her attitude when she says there is lot of goodwill circulating - this comes from having done many projects without any finances at the start, but having surplus towards the end.
In the context of finances she shares the importance of learning to live within one's resources, focus on basic needs and how they chose not to worry about children's education, but to trust things will happen as what they were doing was right.
She talks about the need to constantly evolve, adapt, learn and how that helped her to focus on running a hospital, community health, farming, craft, business. She shares the importance of understanding what is the need and responding to the need, with focus on training oneself, to be equipped with the relevant knowledge and skills.
Once again she surprises us by her conscious choice to lead a simple life and to nurture humility - she shares the influence her father had on this decision.
She shares how she handles her bad days - yes, there is a valuable tip here, for all of us.
She then shares her current dreams and also ends the conversations with 2 strong messages for all of us, for us to implement in our life.

And who feels, this was the most obvious choice for her right from her teens!
Dr. Lalitha Regi starts sharing her current primary roles and that is not a small list to start with! If you think being a senior Dr in a hospital in a remote village itself can be demanding, then listen to her introduction of her primary roles!
Then she starts introducing Porgai to us and shared about how she has gone about reviving an ancient type of embroidery. And this is not about it being an area of interest. Dr. Lalitha, thru this intervention of revival, has focussed on helping women artisans earn from their home and have a healthy and more dignified life. And, please don’t forget to check out the beautiful hand embroidered items you can buy - the website shows just a sample though!
She talks about how she and her husband chose this village(you will be surprised by the criteria), set up a 1 room mud and thatch clinic that has now grown into a 35 bedded secondary hospital with 95% staff from the tribal community itself.
If achieving this itself is great, wait…. She then talks about their decision to explore after the first 10 years and how they did it. And what this resulted in - again, something touching the lives of hundreds of people differently. Yes, organic farming.
We then move on to looking at this journey from a personal context in terms of what led her to these decisions, what kind of challenges they faced and especially, she, as a woman..
But then, did she feel tempted to come back to the "regular medical profession" ??
In the process of listening to her life, there are valuable insights for each one of us. We are bound to reflect on what it means to look at challenges from this perspective, what it means to live in response to needs of people around us.
Yes, this is just Part 1..stay tuned for Part 2.

The pandemic has made devices easily accessible, even a necessity, amongst children across all age groups. We did not have enough time to prepare for this, fully understanding the pros and cons of it. Before March 2020, discussions around device usage happened with the context that device usage is optional, for children. That is no longer the case. Do we have time to discuss, debate and figure out what steps we need to take when the children already have access ? Or, is it OK to not bother about it ?
In this episode, we have Aruna Sankaranarayanan, an author and psychologist who has done a lot of research in this area. Her first book, Zero Limits: Things Every 20 Something Should Know, which will be published by Rupa Publications, includes a chapter on the responsible use of digital technology.
We explore questions around device usage across various age groups. If you do an Internet search, you are likely to come across suggestions for device usage amongst young children. What about older children ? What is relevant and practical in today's scenario ? If you are looking for best practice recommendations, do not miss this episode.

What's in this episode:
Bindhumalini talks about what it means for her and her husband to be in the musical field and the advantages and the constant learnings that it entails. Then we move on to discussing the daily life and if music is an intrinsic part of her day.
We discuss the relevance of spontaneity vs planning, where what is required. Is planning a challenge for someone in creative space. All of you who give your reasons for the chaos out there, you need to listen to this part of the episode definitely. Bindhu talks about the need to harness spontaneity and she talks about how responsibility plays a role in this. Then we explore about music and art forms, whether they exist in a different realm, away from the real world.
Bindhu talks about challenges that people in music and performing arts face and what we, as listeners, should or should not do. We discuss the importance of reflection and how it can influence our daily life. Gender and the culture of women having to sacrifice, how our relevance keeps changing and the need to adapt to it and what freedom means - these are interesting topics where we get to hear Bindhu's thoughts.
And towards the end, Bindhu, true to her character, ignores the minimal audio setup for this podcast and sets out to sing and there too she makes a conscious choice of what to sing.
And with this, we end the 2 Part series on Bindhumalini! Hope you enjoyed this episode.

Welcome to a chat on looking at festivals, the need to reimagine and adapt them to today's context. I invite you to this chat with my friend Srividya where we explore our memories of festivals, what they mean to us and how we can play a role in creating memories for our children and enjoy it differently.
Does this mean we stop celebrating our traditional festivals ? Definitely not. Don’t we have enough festivals to start thinking about new ones ? Do they sometimes feel as a burden for the busy Indian woman ? Do they sometimes feel just a ritual, having lost their meaning ? How to make sure festivals help us find the laughter, fun, love, sharing and gratitude in today's context ?
If these are the questions in your mind, you would love this chitchat. You may get some ideas to try out with your family. And of course, we are waiting to hear your ideas on this topic.

What's in this episode:
My friend Srividya and me relive an earlier chat we had on this topic of festivals. We start with the intent of festivals and what comes to our mind. We look at whether it means the same for our children.
What about the smaller festivals for which we may not know the meaning ? We then discuss the feedback from children on festivals - these sure are pointers for you to have such a discussion at home.
We explore the concept of picking up a new "festival" or "special day" to try out or reimagine. We discuss examples of trying this out instead of the routine shopping as per the various festival sales or eating out. Or, doing these itself in a different way.
We then move on gifting, connecting across generations and even playing games as a family. And of course, exploring interesting outings. Plus, we look at doing something over a long period of time, questioning festival as an event associated with a day or a few days.
Then, we get into the practical ways of going about it, if you want to start trying this.
We examine the scope for reimagining along with our traditions as well!
And of course, we would like to hear from you on what you have tried out or your ideas. Head over to our facebook page or twitter handle to share your ideas and experiences! Together we can arrive at a wonderful list of "Ideas for Reimagining festivals".

She talks about what it takes to be open and to look for and seize opportunities.
She shares what she considers is most important for all of us women..

2nd Avataar - till her 40s primarily focussing on family, but not only that!!

Kalpana talks about how our notion of CSA done by a stranger in some dark alley is false. She shares how home and school are the most at risk places for CSA and what we as parents need to know to protect our children. Not from strangers, but from known people, people whom we trust. She talks about how we have a false sense of safety and shares the most powerful tool that we can give our child.
We move on to discussing about how to talk to the child in an age appropriate manner, right from about 3 years to mid teens and beyond. We examine why the notion of good touch and bad touch is not correct.
More importantly, she explains with examples the importance of practicing conversations on sexuality among many other things and gives practical examples of doing so, embedded in our daily life.
Yes, she addresses the question of how to discuss with older children and what parental responsibility is in these days of everything being available at one's fingertips.
And she highlights the need to discuss gender, identity and so on and how this helps in the context of abuse.
