Random and relevant conversations that may or may not be discussed in church, but it just so happens to be my last name! Topics will range from philosophy to personal interests, pews to prisons, sports to poetry, puberty to parenting, politics to therapy, and perhaps several questions that may never be answered. But hey, let’s talk it out!
I met Amas “coincidentally” while camping in Hawaii and we ended up becoming friends as I evidently love to do with strangers! He’s raising his kids here in Laupahoehoe and teaching them how to be warriors instead of entitled Americans. His background and knowledge is definitely something all of us can learn from! This conversation gets real QUICK and doesn’t stop till the end! From females being named a “junior” to him going to prison and then finding a new way of life in a myriad or areas… Seth takes us in and reminds or informs us that the journey of life will always be a roller coaster ride, but every high, low, twist, turn, flip, pause, or stop is worth the journey. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/churchtalks/support
Averett University’s most recent women’s head soccer coach recently resigned to focus on her growing family. Meghan got married a little over 4 years ago to Kenny (currently Averett’s head baseball coach) and they have a gorgeous son, Roman, who will soon be 3 years old and… spoiler alert… he’s about to be a big brother to TWIN BOYS!!! Needless to say, everything in their life needed a reassessment with this news and the doors that opened and closed were simply providential. Meghan talks about her crunchy/organic nature and how she prefers more natural alternatives, especially considering some medical issues she’s had. She even makes her own soap and deodorant at home!!! Her upbringing instilled a discipline to push herself in her strength and athleticism as well as a foundation of faith that she, like most of us, has had to refocus and realign herself with in different seasons of life. Kenzie and I go wayyy back to our teenage years and it’s been so cool to watch her evolve as an entrepreneur, business owner, designer, wife, and mom! She talks about the tremendous blessing of having a supportive family that set her up for success and affirmed her from childhood to now in her 30s. We also discussed the self-motivation and self-discipline that being your own boss requires and how to be adaptable, especially with family dynamics changing and the roller coasters of busy seasons! As we were ending the last episode, I asked Christian a question that spurred this PART 2 conversation, “Why are we here?” Obviously, that was way too deep of a question for a short answer, so this follow-up conversation gives us a glimpse into his perspective! Warning: topics we discuss may be for more mature ears.. 4 high school students were thrilled to sit with me and have a round table discussion in the middle of their week at camp to talk about life from their lenses. Different churches are represented here, but these 4 are fantastic leaders, with or without a title, so they’re making sure everyone feels a sense of belonging. We get real and transparent about things that we’ve struggled with and/or been traumatized by, as well as how rampant and accessible so many destructive things are today. These kids gives me hope though!! Man…… they’re doing the dang hard thangs. I believe in the next generation! Let these guys inspire and motivate you to live more intentionally and full of joy!

At 22 years old, Reshad is on track (no pun intended) with his goals as he coaches a high school track team and middle school football team! He majored in Physical Education with an emphasis on Coaching at Winston-Salem State University and has been active in sports throughout his life. His aspirations are not only to enhance the athletic skills in kids, but also to encourage them in their academia as well. While currently coaching at the two schools he attended, he is able to work alongside some of his own teachers and coaches, and what a proud moment for them to see the success of one of their students! I met Reshad when he was a young teenager and I was his youth pastor, and I knew very quickly that he had a gift of humble leadership. He continues to use that at his job at Walmart, the summer camp he directs in the apartment complex where he grew up, on and off the track and football fields, and at home. I’m proud of his achievements and even more proud of his heart!

I have the pleasure of being friends with many of the Bikers Against Trafficking members in Virginia and these guys have such hospitable and genuine hearts that want to help whoever they can. Their specific calling and mission right now is to raise awareness of human trafficking to help more people be rescued and freed from being sold and abused. Go to bikersagainsttrafficking.org to read up, get involved, donate financially to help with safe houses and rescue missions, and then also follow their social media pages, more than just the Virginia pages! Spread the word that if someone is in need of help personally of being trafficked, text “HELP” to BeFree (233733). If you know of someone or suspect that someone may be being trafficked, get law enforcement involved by calling 911 or letting local police officers know where suspicious behavior is. It’s better to look like a dummy and be wrong than to be right and not do anything. ALSO!!!!!! Go watch “Sound of Freedom” NOW while it’s still in theaters!!!! On her 29th birthday weekend, I got to have a wonderful conversation with my friend that I met randomly and divinely at St Francis Springs Prayer Center. We connected as two independent, Jesus-loving women who are fighting for prison reform, religious freedom, and who are also both on a journey of healing and self-realization. In our personalities, we can relate as an Enneagram 7 and it was evident when she invited me to hike El Camino with her last summer after only one lunch conversation, and I tried to make it happen but unfortunately couldn’t on short notice. She still went by herself and had one of the most incredible experiences of a lifetime! Her story is rich with fulfillment, heartbreak, joy, walks with her dog, living in other states, and walking people through some of their hardest and most traumatic moments of grief. I’ve got a tremendous amount of respect for this man and I’m so proud and blessed to be his daughter. He raised me to love God and follow Jesus, put family first, be generous and hospitable, stay teachable and never stop learning. Monica’s southern charm is sweeter than sweet tea! She’s one of the most intentional encouragers I know, and she coined the term “Kathrynisms” where she texts and inspires me with my own words from several of my podcast episodes. While her job entails administering MRIs, she’ll tell you that her calling and greatest joy is raising her two beautiful children, and quite uniquely at that as her son has autism and is mostly nonverbal. She was raised Jehovah’s Witness and had several faith and perspective changes into her adult life that led to confusion and making some harmful and dangerous life choices. After getting more stable in her faith journey, she began to make wiser and healthier decisions and she wants to instill the worth and belonging in her kids what she yearned for. Multiple flavors doesn’t just describe their shortbread… This Jamaican man and Scottish-Italian woman fall in love in their teens having no clue what the next several years would entail for them. Young, immature, and invincible Anwar had a wake-up call in college that made him reconsider his decisions as a dealer, and ultimately propelled him into selling other (and legal 😜) products. He and his wife have been together for 20 years, now married with 3 children, and running a successful small business! The shortbread itself and the few people who bake, package, and send it off may be small, but the reach is worldwide with them distributing through Amazon, QVC, select Whole Foods stores, several local stores in Charlottesville VA where they live, and working on getting on the Fresh Market shelves soon!!! Individually wrapped shortbread (packaged in cute little boxes illustrated by one of their friends who depicts their family in the form of rabbits with a poem about their family on the back written by co-founder/owner and wife of Anwar, Laura) can be enjoyed in multiple flavors from my personal favorite, Earl Grey, to Cinnamon, Lavender, Meyer Lemon, Pumpkin Spice, Cherry Blossom, Birthday Cake, or Traditional. These are wonderful to enjoy slowly and intentionally with a cup of tea or coffee, and they also make terrific gifts, wedding favors, gift basket stuffers, or just a delicious way to support a small family-run business ☺️. Search for Allens Scottish Shortbread on Google, Amazon, Facebook, and Instagram (@allens_scottish_shortbread) and find Anwar Allen on social media as well! Sarah is a friend who happens to also be the wife of my boss/chiropractor, Dr. Matt Thompson, both of whom have become my family over the last several years. She is a UNC alum with a Master’s degree and was an elementary school teacher until she resigned to be a stay-at-home mom with their son and daughter. During the pandemic, she fought on behalf of families across the county and state for their overall health and happiness, especially in the school system. Where most would cower in the face of adversity, Sarah doesn’t back down when times get tough. She’s definitely someone you’d want in your corner! In this episode, you’ll hear about the obstacles that come with having a hearing-impaired spouse, the work ethic and determination to live in what others merely dream of, and how everything doesn’t always look like how it appears on the outside. Often times, people only see something as glamorous without seeing the grit that preceded it; which ultimately makes it sustainable. Her holistic approach to health is informative and inspiring! The photos in the cover art will make sense when you listen 😜 The two Amys and I laugh and cry as we reminisce on our 15+ years of friendship and a few of the countless memories that contributed to the bond that we still have now. Seasons of life are always changing… getting married, having children, shifting careers, moving to different cities, etc…. and things we thought would be forever, sometimes aren’t. We have been constants for each other through tragic deaths of family, relationships falling apart, church transitions, and many unexpected curveballs that life has thrown at us, but we’ve also championed each other throughout every shift. I thought it was due time to check in with y’all and update you on some new endeavors in my life as well as give you hope and encouragement and permission to fully feel all the feelings in this chapter of your life. God gave us all a myriad of emotions (at least 87 that can be named) that too often we suppress. It’s healthy and cathartic to allow time and space for those to surface in a safe environment. Perhaps it’s with a therapist if you’re blessed with that privilege, or it could be with a trusted confidant in your sphere. It could also be in solitude. However, I urge you to be careful to not let the solitude be a masked form of suppression. As always, reach out to me if you need someone to talk to. I’ll listen with no judgement and with confidentiality. If you’re feeling discouraged, I guarantee that if you encourage someone else, it will signal to your brain to feel as encouraged as if someone else did it for you. Keep smiling, homies. I have so much love and appreciation for y’all. 🤟

I met these newlyweds at a Johnnyswim show a couple weeks ago and immediately connected with their energy! Possibly because they, too, are musicians AND they’re a 7 and a 2 on the ennegram (my type is a tie of those two!). Walter Virgil Jr. is THAT DUDE. He can be seen on the campus of Liberty University as the Director of Strategic Projects and Alliances in the department of Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity. He can also be found at The Ramp Church International in Lynchburg VA where he’ll likely be teaching, dancing, singing, and always SMILING. He’s the CEO and founder of Get Fresh and Live (instilling healthy self-perceptions in the lives of at-risk young men), and he is also an actor and model! He’d probably say that his favorite title right now is “Daddy” as he and his beautiful wife Kristal are blessed to be raising two remarkable children, DJ and Joya! He speaks victory to the defeated, life to the hopeless, and love to all of those who are hurt, angry, and abandoned. He boldly defends the body of Christ and doesn’t let anyone limit what God has equipped him to do. I may have met my biggest fan who also composed a jingle to my podcast within this episode! These newlyweds had a Lord of the Rings themed wedding last Halloween and OF COURSE asked me to be a bridesmaid in it! They’ve helped me celebrate my last two birthdays, we’ve attended concerts together, had game nights, and enjoyed delicious food with great drinks over meaningful conversations. In this particular hour, we discussed the enneagram, dogs, brain fog, guns, spiritual growth, brain fog, weightlifting, introvert vs extrovert, and did I mention brain fog?! SUCH a fun episode! I love these guys ridiculously and I know you will, too, after hearing them!!! Follow them on Facebook and Instagram: @adamthegrey @demirnicole @hairby.deminicole

Oprah and Dr. Phil, Sons of Anarchy, “Keep it Shut,” positive thinking, homeschooling, switching churches, accepting everyone’s individual journey, and minimalistic living………. we covered just about everything in the episode, guys! Tabbatha’s heart is lovely and genuine. She’s overtly compassionate and empathetic. Her humility and confidence merge to produce a voice that is gentle and clear. We discuss the difficulty of knowing when to remain silent and when to speak up as well as whether or not positive thinking is really the game changer. P.S. Oprah can be a guest on my podcast anytime! So if anyone has connections, give me the hookup. Please and thanks. You can find Tabbatha Yates on Facebook and Instagram @tabbathayates

This episode is long overdue but worth the wait! They were amongst my first invited guests when I started this podcast a year ago (Wow! It’s been a year!) and things kept getting in the way of us recording. They have more to say than they would have a year ago as they are now expecting their first child! Their stories involve shattered and restored dreams, benefits of waiting and not settling, going from church to work security at a nightclub, knowing there’s more but feeling empty, and prematurely planning without considering the big picture. They may invoke laughter (a lot) and tears during our conversation. Enjoy! @byggimagez @alisha_joyce

It’s a taboo topic of conversation for many, especially in most churches and workplaces. The well-being of our minds have not been prioritized as much as our bodies and brains. If we can physically or intellectually work hard enough, we can almost drown out or smother the mind. Burnout could easily be avoided if we cared more for our own and others’ mental health. Suicide could easily be prevented if it was easier to talk about things going on in our minds that are difficult because it requires vulnerability and safe space, free of judgment or criticism. Having faith does not negate in any way that we may be mentally unwell, just like a the most holy saint can be physically unwell. This monologue isn’t much, but it’s another chisel at the big ole stone wall that serves as a barrier between us now and our best selves. We’re all composed of a mind, body, and spirit — let’s not neglect the health any of them!

Sometimes surprises can be scary and beautiful at the same time. Dwight and Amy have experienced several of those and have learned that what they thought or planned doesn’t always happen, but that doesn’t mean that what actually happens isn’t better than anything they could have dreamed. While they have many gifts, roles, abilities, and responsibilities, family is always priority. The advice and perspective they offer is especially encouraging and helpful for those in relationships or wishing to be, those with children or desiring to have them, those who may be guarded from past hurts or uncertain about the future, and those who would like to see from a redemptive and hopeful lens. @dholman83 @aholman12

I’ve been told most of my life that I am incredibly upbeat, encouraging, positive, happy, and full of life. When they talk to me more in-depth and I tell them that it’s a true battle at times to be that way because some days I don’t even want to live, they’re in shock and disbelief. The truth is the more someone deeply loves, the more they deeply hurt, and that person often doesn’t know how to handle those deep emotions and so they either cave in and shut out or they explode and lash out when what he/she is experiencing gets overwhelming. If I had to label my calling in life, it’d be a hope dealer. Undoubtedly, I believe that those who’ve been through more crap are the most effective at convincing others that their crap doesn’t have to kill them. On my highest or lowest day, I’m persuaded that God loves me and thinks fondly of me... even when I argue with and try to talk Him out of it. The depression and anxiety I battle doesn’t scare Him away or intimidate Him. It’s up to me to renew my mind to the worth He sees in my life. Gamechanger.

Sometimes we dream of what we want to be as a child and that often changes as we grow and mature. Heath talks about how he’s seeing the fulfillment of one of his dreams currently unfold before his eyes, but it hasn’t been the easiest or fastest route. The journey has included several things that appeared to have nothing to do with the end goal, but he’s learned from all of them and he offers us the best advice he’s ever received that changed his entire outlook on life.

Though “crickets” often signify silence these days, they make a lot of noise through motion. Even when we aren’t speaking, may our actions of love be as loud and clear as the crickets on a summer night underneath a starry sky. We never know whose life could be changed, spared, prolonged, fulfilled, or validated, or uplifted by our simple yet profound acts of love.

Trauma is a real thing. Some people don’t even realize it was a traumatic experience they went through that caused fear to cripple them. How we view them and getting to the root of them will ultimately determine whether we allow them to paralyze us or propel us into our purpose.

While walking down my street, I thought about the streets that people have been crowding the last several days and I can’t help but wonder where Jesus would be if he were here right now. I recorded my first episode at 3am after drinking espresso at 8pm (trust me, this is not typical), which ironically has to do with resting and how I struggle oftentimes with what it even means to “rest.” I’m learning how to not just do it occasionally, but to actually BE at rest long-term.
