He is the East Asia Team Leader at the international human rights organisation CSW, where he focuses on China, North Korea, Burma and Indonesia. He is also the co-founder and Chair of Hong Kong Watch and the co-founder and deputy chair of the Conservative Party Human Rights Commission. He is the author of six books and a regular contributor to international media including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Guardian, TIME, The Spectator, The Diplomat, The Huffington Post, The Catholic Herald, Conservativehome.com, Unherd.com and others, and has appeared on BBC, Al Jazeera, CNN and Sky News. He has testified in hearings in the House of Commons, the European Parliament, the US Congress and the Japanese Parliament. He has a BA in History and Politics and an MA in China Studies, and has lived in Hong Kong, mainland China, East Timor and Washington, DC.
