In this final episode of the Dying Your Way Encore Series, Claire O’Berry revisits her powerful conversation with Michele Neff Hernandez, founder of Soaring Spirits International and author of Different After You: Rediscovering Yourself and Healing after Grief or Trauma.
Michele’s life changed in 2005 when her husband, Phillip, was killed in a cycling accident. Suddenly widowed at 35 and raising a blended family of six children, Michele began searching for other widowed people who could help her understand what life after such a devastating loss might look like. That search became the foundation for Soaring Spirits International, a global organization offering peer support, resources, and community for people who have experienced the death of a spouse or partner.
In this conversation, Claire and Michele explore grief, trauma, widowhood, complicated grief, community support, and the importance of allowing ourselves to be changed by loss. Michele also shares her memorable fishbowl analogy, a practical way to think about boundaries, support, judgment, and whose opinions truly deserve space in our lives.
This episode is for anyone who is widowed, anyone supporting someone after the death of a spouse or partner, and anyone seeking a deeper understanding of grief that does not fit neatly into society’s expectations.

In this Encore episode of the Dying Your Way podcast, Claire O’Berry revisits her first conversation with Toni Reilly, regression specialist and founder of the Toni Reilly Institute. Together they explore what regression work is, how it can include past-life recall and the space “in between lives,” and why many people report feeling calmer and less fearful about death afterward.
This conversation touches on the universal fear of dying, the grief and anxiety that can arise as we face mortality, and how curiosity—rather than rigid belief—can soften fear. Toni shares how regression is experienced as a deeply personal inner knowing, and why people often come away feeling lighter, clearer, and more at peace.

In this Encore episode of the Dying Your Way podcast, Claire O’Berry speaks with Julie Ryan, a former medical device entrepreneur and inventor who now works as a medical intuitive and psychic.
Julie shares the framework she calls the 12 transitions, describing what she believes happens as a person approaches death from the spiritual side of the equation. Claire and Julie explore the parallels between birth and death, the comfort many people report from end-of-life visions, and why Julie believes no one dies alone.
They also discuss grief and guilt, especially for families whose loved ones died during the COVID era, and Julie explains her weekly call-in show and podcast, Ask Julie Ryan, where listeners can ask questions about end-of-life experiences, healing, and the afterlife.

In this Encore episode of the Dying Your Way podcast, Claire O’Berry reconnects with Carlos Pomeda, a yoga teacher and practitioner of more than 40 years, and a scholar of Sanskrit and religious studies.
This conversation is personal for Claire. In 2004, she and her mother took a course taught by Carlos called Karma, Death, and Dying, before her mother’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis. That teaching became a steady foundation through years of caregiving, and now, sixteen years later, the conversation continues.
Together, they explore how cultural denial shapes our relationship with death, why acceptance can ease emotional suffering, and how meditation supports a shift from body-based identity toward inner awareness. Carlos also shares his perspective on karma, prana (vital energy), ritual, and “unfinished business,” along with research threads that many find compelling, including near-death experiences, hospice visions, and children’s reports of past-life memory.
This is a thoughtful, grounding episode for anyone facing illness, grief, caregiving, or the simple human question of how to die well.

In this Encore episode (recorded in 2020), Claire O’Berry speaks with Stephen Jenkinson about what we have lost culturally around dying, and what it might mean to recover death wisdom as a shared, communal responsibility.
Together, they explore why older and vulnerable people are so easily dismissed, the difference between a “personalized” death and a communal one, and why the work of dying asks more of us than a preference list. Stephen also reflects on fear, medicalized dying, and the long shadow a death-phobic culture casts over how we live.

This is not a teaching episode. It’s not a checklist or a tidy list of stages. It’s a story — my story — about grief, love, and the spaces in between.
In this deeply personal episode, I share the complicated grief that followed the unexpected death of my husband, David, in 1985, just two weeks after our divorce — a loss that wasn’t acknowledged but that shaped me for decades. I also speak openly about the anticipatory grief I’m experiencing now as my husband Terry, my late-life gift, faces a Parkinson’s diagnosis — and how my past informs my present.
This conversation isn’t about answers. It’s about honesty. About the scars that never fully heal. About the love that remains. And about the shared, human experience of grieving — whether the loss happened long ago, recently, or hasn’t yet happened at all.
Next week, we’ll continue the conversation with guest Prema Paxton, who transformed unimaginable loss into a mission of support for grieving parents. But for now, I invite you to sit with me in this tender space, where love and grief live side by side.

Interviewing Stephen Jenkinson is not for the faint of heart. In this thirdconversation on the Dying Your Way Podcast, I stepped into the ring once again with one of the great cultural teachers of our time. We explored his latest book Matrimony—a text that challenges, confronts, and ultimately blesses the reader with the possibility of change.
What began as a “slog” of words became an initiation through storytelling, ritual, patrimony, vows, and grief. Stephen makes the case that matrimony is not a private romance but a cultural act—a village-making event that has profound resonance for how we face death, loss, and love itself.
I survived. I stretched. I grew. And I am incrementally, if not forever changed. My hope is that you, too, will listen to this conversation, buy the book, share this podcast with others and so you too can take up the work in your own way. The village really needs us.

In our latest Dying Your Way podcast episode, I’m joined by the luminous Dr. Toni Reilly—renowned psychotherapist, past-life specialist, and now author of the soul-stirring book Grief is Not the Death of You.
It’s been five years since I last interviewed Toni, and what a journey she’s been on since then. In this intimate and honest conversation, we explore how grief—whether from death, divorce, identity loss, or even the breakdown of belief systems—is not something to avoid or push through, but a transformative teacher.
We go deep into:
Toni’s insights are both mystical and deeply practical. Whether you are in grief, supporting someone who is, or simply seeking a more soulful understanding of life’s hardest moments—this conversation will stay with you.
💬 One takeaway? “You don’t choose grief. It chooses you. But through it, you will never be the same—and that’s the gift.”
We also touch on her upcoming appearance at the Afterlife Convention in Sydney (June 28–29), where science meets spirituality in powerful new ways. Great teachers through the ages have taught the importance of facing death as a conscious and sacred event. Reverend Bodhi Be has carried this torch as an end of life leader and innovator globally, as well as for his local Hawaiian community.
He is an ordained interfaith minister and teacher in the Sufi lineage. As Founder and Executive Director of Doorway Into Light, his life and teachings encourage us all to “do death better”.
Inspired by Ram Dass, a mentor, neighbor and friend; Bodhi Be has turned the business of dying into a sacred and sustainable event.

What is end of life and the opportunity to change our perspective?
Death is a kind of initiation that involves ceremony.
It is a right of passage and training for others to be able to face the deaths we all must suffer, large and small.
There is a new "you" being born at many life junctures. Ritual provides comfort and support to meet those moments and better understand the soul's journey.

VSED - Voluntarily Stopping Eating and Drinking at the end of life, is a legal but controversial topic in many states and countries. Judith Schwarz PhD, RN and Clinical Director with End of Life Choices New York, explains what VSED is and isn’t. Who are the most likely candidates, and who would choose this option? Judith is a researcher, lecturer and author on this topic, and supported many suffering patients and their families to know if this is a viable option at the end of life. This is not to be confused with Medically Assisted Dying and not death by suicide*.

In this second Dying Your Way interview with Stephen Jenkinson, he shares with podcast host, Claire O’Berry, his take on the last two years and how in the end, death is the common denominator that we all share.
“Death means you no harm. Though it means you. You belong to the ending of your days.”
This past palliative care provider, poet and philosopher of our time will have you think … and think again … rewind … replay … rewind and replay … and guaranteed think more deeply about our own natural and inevitable progression toward death.

Grief Specialist and counselor Barb Adler reflects on the power of mindfulness as tool to connect and witness feelings, to better support anyone living or dying. Starting as a counselor during the HIV / AIDS epedemic in San Francisco, Barb had to confront her own unresolved grief while learning to be present and in the moment to clients receiving what was then a death sentence. Barb has built on this work to support those living with dementia and those struggling with mental health issues in the aging population.

African Americans have historical distrust of the medical community which has an impact on end of life care. They also have rich spiritual connections that have built a strong sense of community as they historically took care of their own during times of loss. How does this translate to the current reality of death and dying in the African American community? Listen to counsellor and educator Vernon Nickerson passionately share the history and experience from an African American POV that can be learning lessons for us all.

In 2020, 700,000 people died of AIDS and 37 million are currently living with AIDS while the Coronavirus pandemic rages on. Listen to Gary Paul Wright, Co-Founder and Executive Director of the African American Office of Gay Concerns, and his husband, Peter Oates, Director of Health Care Services, School of Nursing at Rutgers University speak of the concerns and progress the pandemic has provided to marginalized minority and LBGTQ communities.
It comes as no surprise a huge gap exists in end of life care exemplified by the private nursing Peter gave to Lord Spencer the father of Diana, Princess of Wales, and a black, transgender youth dying of AIDS in New Jersey. The quick response and roll out of vaccines for COVID-19 might be the light at the end of the AIDS tunnel.

When it comes to end of life issues, few are as controversial as allowing an individual to choose to end their own life legally. Gabrielle Elise Jimenez is an author, Hospice Nurse and End of Life Doula who has been at the bedside with many terminal patients who choose to end their life by their own hand and in their own time, now that it is legal in California. We discuss the many-stepped criteria, the practical steps, the circumstances surrounding patients that get them to this place, and the care for the families who support their decision. Dying Your Way is neither in favor or opposition, but instead we wish to educate ourselves and our audience to the realities of this growing, global, legal option for terminally ill patients.
Warning: This subject may be confronting for some. If you have any thoughts of self harm call 13-11-14 AU or 1-800- 273-TALK or your country’s equivalent suicide prevention hotline.

Molly Reynolds documents the “story of the story” of an Australian icon, in her award-winning film, My Name is Gulpilil. David Gulpilil has stage 4 lung cancer. This interview was meant to explore cultural sensitivities as it pertains to end of life care. It took me on my own journey of humility and white fragility … my own unexamined assumptions on what is good end of life care.
