In 2007, my 18-year-old son Kevin died of alcohol poisoning—the very day he moved out on his own. In the wake of that loss, I packed his ashes in my backpack and walked from Gilbert, Arizona to Kalispell, Montana. Since then, I’ve told his story nearly 400 times to over 400,000 students and parents. It’s a message about more than just loss—it's about the power of choices, resilience in the face of adversity, and the healing that comes through forgiveness.

THE VALUE EMBRACING DIVERSITY ADDS TO CATHOLIC PRIESTHOOD a conversation with Father Anne Her bio: Father Anne was ordained on October 16, 2021 in Albuquerque, NM through the Association of Roman Catholic Women Priests and is now an independent Roman Catholic priest. She has a deep love of the Society of Jesus and Ignatian spirituality, which blossomed over twelve years of ministering with Jesuits. She earned a Master of Divinity from Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, CA, and has worked in several parishes in the Jesuits West Province.
Father Anne has participated in a wide range of ministries, including coordinating liturgy, designing faith formation for young adults, organizing parish events, leading retreats, providing spiritual direction, and supporting the LGBTQ community and family ministries. Anne also ran a Jesuit parish as Pastoral Associate. She also has a love of pastoral care, including walking with those who are homebound or close to the end of life. As part of her commitment to the care of creation, Anne rescues senior dogs with special needs and gives them life with dignity through their last days. Her deepest desire is to be a parish priest in the institutional Church.
In addition to her formation in the Catholic Church, Father Anne has a Master’s degree in Rhetoric and Writing Studies from San Diego State University, along with 24 years of experience in strategic communications, professional writing, and marketing and promotions. She harnesses this background in working for a priesthood that welcomes women. Deeply grounded in the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius, Father Anne has a passionate interest in participating in the discernment of what the next era of the Roman Catholic Church will look like. While many have understandably walked away from the Roman Catholic Church, Father Anne obeys the call of the Holy Spirit to collaborate with God on the project of equality within one of the most powerful institutions in the world. Howard C. my stepfather became the first father figure I had in my life. This is a synopsis of our story, a story I hope you can relate to in some way.
Howard C. A tribute poem He stood ‘bout five foot nine with a head of black and gray when he wasn’t bent over and tired ‘cause of the bricks he laid to earn his pay. Friday night to Sunday morn’in he chased his demons away with White Liquor and six packs of Miller. Welded to the motion picture screen of his brain was the image of a man he’d killed in a Jersey bar for a reason long forgotten like an innocent child of war. Weeknights when he wasn’t drinking, we’d sit and talk, we would sit and talk in front of the Black and White TV as Dan Rather spewed off the evening news. I’d tell him about my newly found faith and it’s promise of paradise and he would remind me about how life is like a pair of dice, sometimes you roll a seven, other times snake eyes, sometimes the only the prize the winner got was a card deck of lies and when your deck is stacked against ‘cha, he’d say, “You betta know how to shuck and jive.”Bluff your way through before you’re forced to do things you never thought you’d do. Being young and book smart dumbI I challenged his every word, debated him down, this man with a Street University degree This man who unselfishly made himself a father to me His blood does not run through my veins biologically...His blood runs through my spirit Energizing me mentally when my body is tired and all hope seems to be gone I remember what he taught me He taught me that it doesn’t matter how strong a man is, what matters is how well a man holds on. He loved me like a son and I loved him like a dad. To this day his voice echoes in my ears and my heart for him, longtime dead, still sheds a river of tears.
