Dr. Glen Miles' sermon "Walking in the Light of God," focuses on the quote from Isaiah found in Matthew's gospel, "the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light." This word proclaims the promise of God that there is never enough darkness in the world, not even the darkness of death, to cover up the light of Heaven's eternal dawn. Matthew ends this section with the words of Jesus: "Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven has come near."
Jesus' teaching though is not about judgment, but about turning around. Matthew is telling us, "Hey look, Jesus is here! He's helping us see the dawn of a new day. Turn around and follow him. Let's walk together in the light of God." It is not always easy to turn around. And, yes, sometimes there are some serious things we need to let go of as we walk with God, but at the end of the day this news from Jesus is always good. Based on Matthew 4:12-17. (January 22, 2017)

Glen Miles' sermon, "Glory," is based on John 1:5: "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it." This beautiful verse reminds us that even the tiniest candle can overpower the dark. (January 1, 2017)
This sermon, "Home for Christmas," is part 4 in Dr. Glen Miles' "Where the Love Light Beams" sermon series. Your ears might perk up when you hear the reading from Isaiah 7:10-16, which proclaims, "Look the young woman is with child and shall bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel." The old prophet is referring to a sign within the context of his own situation. Ahaz, a lousy king, is the target of Isaiah's words. The king has tried to pretend like he is super religious. Like too many politicians, even contemporary ones, he thinks a sudden influx of faith will convince the people, Isaiah and God, to leave him alone. Isaiah will have none of this false piety. He is basically saying, "If you trust in God the future will be fine. If you try to cover your bases by telling everybody what they want to hear, you're in trouble."
When the earliest Christians read this old text, they thought of Jesus. They saw in this story a reflection of the way Jesus' life and teaching, spoken not from political power but rather through the authority that comes from an authentic life, can challenge even the greatest and most powerful Kings and Caesars. The same is true today. A Presbyterian preacher I know writes, "What keeps the wild hope of Christmas alive year after year in a world notorious for dashing all hopes is the haunting dream that the child who was born that day may yet be born again even in us and our own snowbound, snowblind longing for him." When that child is born again in us, we will finally be home.
This sermon,"A Long Road Back," is part 3 in Dr. Glen Miles' series, "Where the Love Light Beams." It focuses on Isaiah 35 and the prophet's joyous proclamation of the reality of hope and the road back home. He practically shouts to his congregation, "Be strong! Do not fear!" The road to the place of welcome and joy is sometimes a long one, but the promise of God rests on God's desire to finally bring each of us to the farms of love and grace. (December 18, 2016)

"If Only," part 2 in Glen Miles' sermon series, "Where the Love Light Beams" will wonder out loud what our lives would be like if we lived them in the light of this child's arrival. This is the first sermon in Glen Miles Advent sermon series, Where the Love Light Beams. The prophet is dreaming of a day when all of God's people are able to live in peace, of a time when spears and swords are transformed into pruning hooks and plowshares. It is a beautiful vision but it seems impossible. The dream is easily clouded by cynicism and fear. It can be reduced to a vague afterthought by all of the tension in the world. Nonetheless, the prophet's hope is relentless. He can see "in days to come" the promise finally being made real. Based on Isaiah 2:1-5. (November 28, 2016)

In Part 5 of his sermon series, "Deep Courage," Dr. Glen Miles focuses on the biblical tale of Esther, a young Jewish woman who is thrust into the political intrigue of ancient Persia. Through a series of events beyond her control, she ends up as the queen. After she becomes queen, there is a movement led by an evil character named Haman to kill all of the Jews living in Persia. Because of her position, she is in a place where she may be able to save her people from extinction. She is reluctant to try anything, she could lose her life, but a relative asks, "And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?" Esther shows great courage when she accepts this responsibility saying, "If I perish, I perish."
The question before her is one that really lies before all of us. What are you called to right now in your life? Is there an issue you need to face, a problem you're invited to tackle, an effort you know would benefit from your support? Maybe it is some really big deal that will get you on the 5 o'clock news or maybe, as it is for most of us, it is some quiet work you need to do, something that will benefit a child or a neighbor. In this sermon, we encounter this call to serve each other and the world. Based on Esther 4: 9-17 and John 14:25-27. (October 16, 2016)
Dr. Glen Miles' sermon series "Deep Courage," continues with Part 4, a look at the story of Ruth, an immigrant who moved with her mother-in-law Naomi from Moab to Israel. Ruth's courage is seen in her willingness to let love and not fear motivate her actions. Ruth is the great grandmother of King David, and also an ancestor of Jesus. Her experiences help us pay attention to Jesus' all important question, "Who is my neighbor?" This is a story as timely as it is timeless. One scholar notes that Ruth's tale invites us to extend our "own care and concern beyond the boundaries of the bloodline of the covenant community." This is a sweet and precious story that helps us see the wideness of God's welcome for all. Based on Ruth 1:1-5; 15-18. (October 9, 2016)

However, did you know a deeper look at the story reveals David was able to turn the tables to his advantage by paying attention to his own God-given strengths? Deep Courage, Part 2, focuses on the life of Moses, especially his call from God to go to Egypt and demand for the release of the Hebrew slaves. At least five times in the conversation between Moses and God, Moses says, "Yes, but..." He is sure God has the wrong guy. He is certain the skills needed for taking on the most powerful politician in the world are beyond him. And yet, God persists. Moses isn't even all that religious. There is nothing in his life story suggesting he is the one to take on this task. God calls him nonetheless. Sometimes deep courage emerges when we say yes to a tough task or a difficult work. Every act of courage, no matter how great or small, takes place within the life of an ordinary woman or man. No one is born courageous. Instead, great men and women emerge, through the power of love and the beauty of friendship, when they stand up in the face of adversity and take on a challenge. Lao Tzu, the Chinese philosopher once said, "Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage."
In Part 1, we hear from the ancient psalmist who instructs, "Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for the Lord." The sermon title, "Don't Give Up," implies that courage more often than not comes from the simple act of moving forward in life no matter what is happening around you. Based on Psalm 31:21-24. "Just a Kid?" focuses on the prophet Jeremiah's resistance to a career in ministry. His reluctance is not unusual. Moses was concern about his lack of public speaking skills. Gideon is one of the great heroes of the Bible, but he does all he can to avoid God's calling. There are similar stories in both the Bible and in our culture.
God's response to young Jeremiah is beautiful. "Do not say, 'For I am only a boy.' For you shall go to all to whom I send you...Do not be afraid, for I am with you." This sermon deals with how important it is for us to see our children and youth as fully chosen by God, as ones who are gifted to serve and lead even now. What do we need to hear from them that we otherwise might miss? What does it mean that God is present with us, even if we are afraid? Based on Jeremiah 1: 4-10. (August 21, 2016)
