Laurie & Matt, on the day after their son participates in his last activity as a high school student, take a look back at their last four years of parenting, where they went wrong, what they did right, and how they grew as individuals.

They then reflect on over a year of podcasting, taking a look at what resonated, what fell flat, who was listening (Columbus, Ohio?), and all of the different formats and segments they restlessly played with. The reflection is initiated by the news that Teacher Saves World! is taking the summer off, and some much needed beach time in Hawaii is in order. Stay tuned for a new and improved TSW! coming in the Fall of 2021.

Laurie & Matt use this episode to explain how they followed up the writing of their Sourcebook (which continues to be grown) with a daily journaling practice that puts the ideas crafted and stored there into practice.

Developing a routine that finds middle ground between the sometimes anxiety producing blank page and the overly restrictive fill-in-the-blank journals du jour, their practice is structured but flexible. It's a process that grows self-awareness through daily reflection, reminds us to live our virtues everyday, challenges us to grow the positive and remove the negative, and still leaves room for the daily tasks of life.

For the last 10 weeks, Laurie & Matt have been sharing the lists they've curated in their Sourcebook, a journal of ideas, concepts, and information that defines who they are and what their life stands for. We each have a Sourcebook, and you either write and live your own, or allow it to be written for you.

This week they do a recap of the entire process, briefly going over each list and how to set up your own Sourcebook, emphasizing the value of this process in not only taking ownership of the direction your life is going, but as a necessary component in the pursuit of a Good Life.

Laurie & Matt share the 10th and final list they've started curating in their Sourcebook, a journal of ideas, concepts, and information that defines who they are and what their life stands for. We each have a Sourcebook, and you either write and live your own, or allow it to be written for you.

Our memories are more than a record of our past; they are medicine for the present. In particular, our favorite, positive recollections of past experiences where we overcame obstacles, met the ones we fell in love with, visited faraway lands, or any of the other memories that evoke positive emotions every time they get pulled out of our cranial storage locker and allowed to live again, can forever spread joy in our present. Our ability to remember specific, positive memories can serve as a bulwark against present darkness, and curating a list in our Sourcebook is like filling our medicine cabinets with an endless supply of organic happiness.

Laurie & Matt share the 9th list they've started curating in their Sourcebook, a journal of ideas, concepts, and information that defines who they are and what their life stands for. We each have a Sourcebook, and you either write and live your own, or allow it to be written for you.

This episode's list reminds us of all of things in our lives that make us feel good, and also how we often sacrifice so many of them when we become teachers and parents of teens and devote ourselves to helping them grow. Too much sacrifice leads to burnout, and we want to stay healthy and happy for the whole game. Creating this list, and then making time each day to enjoy some of the items on it, restores us and lifts us, and helps us to be better teachers and parents.

Laurie & Matt share the 8th list they've started curating in their Sourcebook, a journal of ideas, concepts, and information that defines who they are and what their life stands for. We each have a Sourcebook, and you either write and live your own, or allow it to be written for you.

This week the idea of triggers is explored, those cues in the environment that routinely set-off behaviors that we're not proud of and may be creating obstacles to growth. By identifying and listing the triggers that we've trained ourselves to respond to in consistent ways, we can start the process changing the script...but how? Change is hard, but there's a little tool that can help unlock better outcomes. If we can use it, then we can make the progress we desire.

Laurie & Matt share the 7th list they've started curating in their Sourcebook, a journal of ideas, concepts, and information that defines who they are and what their life stands for. We each have a Sourcebook, and you either write and live your own, or allow it to be written for you.

This week they explore the sources of negative emotions that can turn a good day upside down, and as teachers and parents of teens, we're surrounded by a never ending supply of challenging situations and people. While emotions are natural, how they manifest as feelings and where we allow them to take us is a little more under our control than we often care to admit. One word, one willful choice may be the key to diffusing so much of the negative that spoils a good moment.

Becoming an adult is the act of becoming responsible. We accumulate items, relationships, and responsibilities that we need to maintain in order to keep them healthy, operating properly, and from costing us unnecessarily if we fail in our duties to maintain them. It can seem overwhelming to consider everything we're supposed to care for ON TOP OF the work we do with our teens, but this important process can help reduce stress, increase appreciation, and save us, financially and otherwise.

Goals get a lot of attention in our productivity and success obsessed world, but parents and teachers sometimes lose sight of their own as they dedicate themselves to helping teens develop theirs. People also shy away from goals, assuming their modest desires aren't worthy compared to those trying to become CEO or the next best-selling author. Nonsense, say Laurie & Matt. Our goals provide us with a great source of joy, and "read a book" is a great goal to have.

Laurie & Matt share the 4th list they've started curating in their Sourcebook, a journal of ideas, concepts, and information that defines who they are and what their life stands for. We each have a Sourcebook, and you either write and live your own, or allow it to be written for you.

This week the focus turns towards character, and the collection of traits and qualities that we assemble, purposefully or not, that determine how we move through the world. By taking the time to compile a list of those traits we admire in others, that we see as advantageous in the pursuit of our best life, we have a guide map for growth, of how to improve ourselves and our future. It serves as equal parts validation and inspiration, and reminds us of the power of character to shape our lives.

Laurie & Matt share the 3rd list they've started curating in their Sourcebook, a journal of ideas, concepts, and information that defines who they are and what their life stands for. We each have a Sourcebook, and you either write and live your own, or allow it to be written for you.

This week they explore the role models that have been inspiration for actions, decisions, and development of character, and how important it is to keep these individuals in our hearts and minds as a personalized support group. Parents and teachers are prone to focus, often with great consternation, on the role models our teens gravitate towards, forgetting that our own models of character are their to help us in the toughest of times. Role models are human, and like us they are not perfect, but they have developed the ability to handle aspects of life that we can learn from and aspire to.

Laurie & Matt share the 2nd list they've started curating in their Sourcebook, a journal of ideas, concepts, and information that defines who they are and what their life stands for. We each have a Sourcebook, and you either write and live your own, or allow it to be written for you.

The 2nd entry in the Sourcebook is a compilation of the wise quotes, phrases, and sayings that provide us with guidance and motivation, a few words at a time. They seep into our brain through their clever word choice and efficient structure, and they bubble to surface when we need their wisdom. Start gathering those bits of wisdom that speak to you and your needs, that have been passed down from family members, come from your faith, you've read in a book, or you maybe saw on Instagram.

Laurie & Matt begin a 10 week journey they're calling the Sourcebook Series, a collection of journal entries that they started to collect, evaluate, generate, and refine over the last six months that represent the most important ideas and principles of who they are, that represent what their life stands for. It's been some of the most important work they've done for themselves, which in turn is good for the teens they serve.

On this episode they talk about the first list in their Sourcebook: Virtues. Virtues represent the guiding principles and values that guide our actions, help us make better decisions, and define what we consider to be a truly Good Life. What are your virtues? This week's homework is to do a Google search for a list of virtues, and think about which ones matter the most to you, that you want to define the kind of person you are. Select 4 or more to be your primary virtues, then as many more as you like to be supportive, sub-virtues. Write them down, define them in your own terms, and spend some time each morning meditating on them before you begin your day.

Laurie & Matt pivot to a health and wellness focus for 2021, adhering to the familiar advice of securing their own oxygen masks before helping the child in the seat next to them in the great airplane of life. They start by focusing on ATTENTION, and how our brains are shaped by what we choose to feed it. The algorithms have their own agenda for what we should pay attention to, but are their suggestions really crafting the person we want to be and the life we want to live? Thoughtfully curating the items we train our attention on, and in turn shape our brains and ourselves, is as good a place to start a new year as any Laurie & Matt can imagine.

Items mentioned in the show: the books "Why Don't Students Like School?" by Daniel T. Willingham, "The Distracted Mind" by Adam Gazzaley & Larry D. Rosen, and the podcast "Making Sense" with Sam Harris, episode #226 (The Price of Distraction).

Matt references the SchoolRubric livestream event he moderated with Matt Rhoads, Serena Pariser, and Steven "ETIENNE" Langlois (all guests of our podcast in 2020) on educators becoming authors. Watch it here:

Laurie & Matt are married high school teachers and parents of two teenagers, and they're trying to save the world, one teenager at a time. After starting their podcast in 2020 and recording 59 episodes in 8 months, covering territory from the unique challenges teenage boys present to classroom grading policies and everything in between, they've decided to pivot in 2021.

2020 taught us a lot about the need for heroes, and teachers and parents of teenagers are some of the most important heroes on the planet. 2020 also reminded us that heroes need to take care of themselves if they have any chance of helping those in their care. For those reasons, Laurie & Matt are dedicating their 2021 episodes to the health and wellness of the teachers and parents of teens. Let's get in the best shape of our lives together, emotionally, physically, mentally and spiritually, so that we can help our teens recover from the year that was.

Laurie & Matt, in their final episode of 2020, take a moment to establish some goals for the coming year. With a mix of personal and professional goals, and some questioning of whether there's any real separation between the two, they look forward to a year of growth and wellness, and putting the current one to rest. Finally.

Matt references the SchoolRubric livestream event he is moderating with Matt Rhoads, Serena Pariser, and Steven "ETIENNE" Langlois (all guests of our podcast in 2020) on January 5, 2021 at 5:00 PM Pacific/ 8:00 PM Eastern called "From Conception to Reality: Our Experiences in Authoring and Writing Books" aimed at educators interested in writing their first book. Laurie & Matt look back on the year that is coming to an end and ask, "How Do We Make Peace With 2020?" In a year where it feels like we've been shoved to the ground and kicked repeatedly in the gut, how do we find the strength to forgive and move on?

For all of the pain we've endured, there has been an incredible amount of growth. Laurie & Matt focus their attention there, along with some strategies that can help all of us get straight with a year that will never be forgotten, like finding inspiration in the stories of others that have endured historic hardships, and developing our ability to accept whatever comes our way. "The world is perfect and as it should be," is a concept that has helped Matt in this regard.

Laurie & Matt revisit an urgent topic, one they first rang the alarm on in the Spring with a widely read blog post. With half of the year almost complete, they're asking "Can We Still Save the Class of 2021?"

Matt rereads the blog post, and it sounds like it could have been written yesterday. If we knew so much and saw so much last Spring, why haven't we made more progress? It seems like everyone around Laurie & Matt are less optimistic about a Spring return to campus, and a general consensus seems to have developed around an entire year of distance learning. Is it just something that has worked itself into the conversation and everyone has adopted it, or have we lost the ability to work together to save our teens? It's a frustrating, tough conversation between two parents and teachers of teens that are seeing an important year of school slip away.

The "We Need to Save the Class of 2021" blog post can be read here: https://teachersavesworld.com/blog/f/we-need-to-save-the-class-of-2021?blogcategory=Opinion

Laurie & Matt pull an old segment out of the Teacher Saves World! Vault, resurrecting the "If I Were Principal" segment that was a mainstay of their first 25 shows. This time Matt dusts it off and plays the principal role, pushing for a reimagining of our campuses' outdoor spaces, suggesting that in light of our current pandemic, and all of the wonderfully underutilized outdoor space many high school campuses have, why don't we put it to better use?

Laurie & Matt take a detour from talking about teaching and parenting to discuss one of their favorite subjects, music. Because they love the year-end lists that start popping up in December, they decided to make one of their own, choosing to Describe 2020 in Six Songs. Why six? Because five wasn't enough. It happens to be Laurie's favorite number too.

They take turns selecting songs (none of which were released in 2020) that they believe capture a critical piece of the essence of 2020, either through its title, the lyrics, its mood, some other association, or a mix of odd reasons. It's a year-end list you are unlikely to find anywhere else.

Find a playlist of these songs here: Apple Music- https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/teacher-saves-world-laurie-matts-playlist-for-2020/pl.u-mJy8KERTyy0g0N Spotify- https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2EmSiz4egTInBLtHhLtcoh?si=McFC9SCOQPaK7VWz93jLJA

Laurie & Matt approach the timely topic of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) when they ask the question, "Is Social Emotional Learning Curriculum the Way to Go?" Laurie, forever the joiner of committees, shares some of what's going on with the most recent group she volunteered her time for, our school's SEL Committee.

SEL is not a new topic or concern, but many of our teens' inability to lift themselves up out of the hole dug by COVID-19, has made the need to implement something, anything to support them an urgent agenda item on most campuses. Laurie shares some simple ideas we can all do immediately, while Matt questions whether canned curriculum or shifting teacher mindsets is the better approach.

Laurie & Matt take a look at a tsunami that's coming, but few are recognizing when they ask the question, "Should Fs Be Given in a Pandemic?" Our teens are being asked to perform in an educational setting nobody would purposefully design in normal times, so why should we expect normal results and apply normal grading?

Laurie suggests this episode could be just a few minutes long, her answer and feelings on the topic coming swift and strong. Matt takes a little more pragmatic approach, but ultimately believes a similar, compassionate, and reasonable set of grading principles should be applied. Things get a little emotional when the topic of "parents not doing there job" is brought up, a phrase that too many use flippantly.

Laurie & Matt ask an important question as we inch closer to the end of the first semester, "Should We Accept Late Work?" Late work, the assignments students fail to complete on time and want to turn in after the due date, has always been a contentious issue with teachers, but this year requires some deeper contemplation and debate.

Laurie & Matt start by asking what your priority objective is with your assignments- learning content or making deadlines? They then venture into grading late work, overly intricate and unsustainable systems, fairness to those that complete work on time, the motivation of deadlines, and the potential collapse of teacher credibility due to hypocrisy.

Laurie & Matt put their parent pants on and look at the devastatingly tough situation our teens are in with distance learning, being asked to exercise self-control well beyond what is normally, and reasonably expected of them. Is this an opportunity for them to learn some tough lessons about responsibility and the consequences of poor choices, or should we fire up the helicopter and swoop in for some 11th hour intervention?

Laurie & Matt pick up where they left off last week, adding a part two to their discussion around the question, "How Do We Stay Healthy in an Unhealthy World?" The conversation this week touches on topics like tongue scraping, vitamins, and prayer. Aristotle and gratitude are also weaved into the conversation, and the show begins and ends with a reflection on the passing of a friend. Molly was a friend of Laurie's from middle school, and her unfortunate passing at the hands of cancer serve as a reminder that living our best, healthiest life is not a task we can put off to tomorrow, because we don't know if it exists. Molly, the first person ever to review Teacher Saves World! on Apple Podcasts (molcoATX), was a vibrant liver of of her best life, an example for us to follow. This episode is dedicated to her.

Laurie & Matt open up about their routines as they, like all of us, are wondering "How Do We Stay Healthy in an Unhealthy World?" As if staying healthy, body, mind, and soul, weren't already challenging in a world where sugar is in everything and escaping into the matrix is as simple as inserting an airpod, an invisible and deadly virus seems to be hanging in the air everywhere, forcing us to spend even more time on our devices.

Laurie, forever the seeker of personal health wisdom, starts off the conversation talking about what we've learned from the Blue Zones, those pockets found around the world where the inhabitants have found the secret to long-term health and well-being. Intermittent fasting is discussed, as Laurie & Matt are firmly into their second year as practitioners and staunch advocates. Appropriate levels of exercise are discussed, as is old school, pen and paper journaling.

Laurie & Matt have been living in the land of WHY lately, having explored the question "why are we teachers?" on their previous episode as an exercise to pinpoint those core values that provide both motivation and navigation, along with easing the burden of decision making by providing a clear framework for determining "yes" (because it serves my why) or "no" (because it doesn't). This led them further down the path to "Why Are We Parents?"

Beyond the obvious biological underpinnings of why they are parents (which at different points during the show cause Laurie to revert to her 13 year old self), Matt questions whether it's a fair question to ask because we can't do anything about it, unlike a job that can be changed if the "why" fades. They do, however, fumble their way to a destination that they recognize as a waystation more than a final port. It's the life they signed up for, the life they love, the life that kicks their butt, and the life that fills their souls. Why? Because.

Laurie & Matt get philosophical, but in a good, practical way. Noting that our shift to distance learning brought with it a deluge of "how to teach," as newbies and veterans alike were forced to earn minors in computer science to facilitate student learning this year, Laurie & Matt hit pause to ponder the vital question, "Why Do You Teach?"

Quoting Nietszche, again, Matt points out that our "hows" are made bearable by our "whys," and it's time to make sure we have one, or dust off the one you penned in your credential program and do a little revising. Laurie shares a list of personal whys to get the conversation started, and Matt makes the connection that prior to our distracted existence, people seeking to live their best life all had a list and checked it daily. Like soldiers experiencing battle fatigue that need a rousing Patton speech to remind them of the mission, our personal "whys" are necessary as motivation and navigation, and they can offer stress relief as well. Your homework: make a list of the reasons why you teach, put it somewhere and meditate on it every morning before you start your day, and then reflect afterwards on how you lived your values.

Laurie & Matt return from their Heart & Soul of a Teacher Journey to visit a dark place where few venture intentionally, but where many often end up. They revisit their regular format to address the question, "Are We Having an Educational Existential Crisis?"

Grappling with the demands of distance learning and the strange alternative universe they seem to visit everyday, where they stare at black boxes and try to coax work out of and build relationships with the teenage humans they believe are behind the dark rectangles, Laurie & Matt let it rip on the mixed-up emotional state they find themselves in. Admittedly thin on practical advice, this episode explores the emotional and psychological grinder that teachers are fed through daily, and the warped reality it is creating. When the people of the future discover and analyze this podcast, it will definitely be definitive of Laurie & Matt's "dark period."

Laurie & Matt continue with their bi-weekly Teen Parent Therapy sessions, this time exploring their struggle to find the right balance of being helicopter or hands off parents. They find themselves careening between the two, rarely with thoughtfulness and purpose, and more often reacting to the failings of their current parenting modality.

Remembering that these sessions are not about solutions and advice, but rather about honesty and exploration, Laurie & Matt open up about their missteps and wonder how they could have done things differently, and whether it would have made any difference at all. Laurie admits that hands off is a style she can adopt for only the briefest of moments before the helicopter blades start turning, and Matt opens up about his compelling sense of duty and whether it's insufficient as a primary driver of fatherly actions. So, no answers were found, but the questions asked and the confessions made are sure to resonate with other members of the Teen Parenting Club.

Laurie & Matt continue to gather data on the heart & soul of a teacher, this time collecting choice insights from Ryan Sagare (pronounced SAY-GAR, like if you were drunk and tried to say "Sammy Hagar" and it just slurred together). Laurie & Matt got to know Ryan through School Rubric, the international education website Ryan co-founded. Matt affectionately refers to Ryan and Wallace, another School Rubric co-founder, as the "School Rubric Dudes."

Now based in Austin, Texas where he works as the Coordinator for Distance Learning at the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas at the University of Texas, Ryan traces his educational path from the Pacific Northwest, to the Midwest, to South America, and eventually the Lone Star State. He informs of us how his mother forced him into his first teaching job at age fourteen, which sparked a journey that would include some questionable outdoor education, luxurious digs in Brazil, and an embracing of online learning. Ryan shares his belief that passion burns in the heart & soul of all great teachers, along with how he married the Girl from (almost) Ipanema.

Laurie & Matt reconnect with an old friend, Tyler Dilts, for the next installment of their Heart & Soul of a Teacher series. Laurie & Matt both met Tyler while theatre arts majors at Long Beach State, Laurie logging some extra Tyler time years later when they both spent time in an office.

Tyler would eventually find success as a writer of crime fiction, which would allow him the opportunity to pursue his true passion, teaching. Tyler recounts his journey from high school dropout to junior college, where an attempt to fulfill an arts requirement as easily as possible may have saved his life. At the very least, changed it deeply. And it wasn't the subject, it was the teacher. Online teaching, meditation, and the need for the old people to get out of the way and let the kids take a shot at it are discussed.

Laurie & Matt, responding to the outpouring of thanks they received after sharing their struggles with parenting teen boys, experiment with a new Thursday format they're calling "Teen Parent Therapy." Realizing that part of the struggle with parenting is battling the constant feelings of failure and thinking that somehow you're responsible for every ill-advised action your teen takes, Laurie & Matt go in search of relief instead strategies. The truth is, we're not alone (even though most of the parent posts on facebook would have us think otherwise), and there is value in sharing your struggles and helping others through theirs.

With this episode, Laurie & Matt discuss the frustration of having children that don't seem to like each other. In a world brimming with best friend bros and sisters for life, why do our kids barely talk to each other? What did we do...again? Laurie & Matt reflect on their childhood and their relationships with their siblings, how they've raised their kids, and the reality that there are many sibling relationships that mirror their own kids'. Acceptance and patience may be the only advice they have, but these episodes aren't about giving advice, but rather talking through our trials and forgiving ourselves. And maybe, just maybe, letting some other teen parents know they're not alone.

Laurie & Matt continue their journey into the heart and soul of a teacher, this time interviewing edtech guru Ed Campos Jr. Laurie and Eddie crossed paths at a local edtech conference five years ago, and they've been friends ever since.

A product of a rural, small, Mexican community, Ed shares how his path took him from Earlimart (CA), to UCLA, to Silicon Valley, and back to California's Central Valley to teach. He opens up about anxiety and using mindfulness in the classroom, a childhood teacher that changed his life, and how he learns by doodling. Laurie & Matt end the show by asking their Final Five questions, including that one quality he believes that lives in the souls of all good teachers. Eddie's answer surprises them both, in a good way. Meditation, civil discourse, and Ruth Bader Ginsburg are also discussed.

Laurie & Matt kick off their Heart & Soul of a Teacher Tour by interviewing someone that knows a few things about touring, and teaching. An interview that came together quickly and out of nowhere, Laurie & Matt went into the interview having never heard of their guest, and left it claiming him as a new best friend and wanting to travel to Canada for some socially distanced hang time.

Steven "Etienne" Langlois (note that the "E" should have a little forward accent on it, but Matt is clueless how to accomplish that) has been rocking concert halls and classrooms for nearly three decades. What started as a last minute college project, and later morphed into an anonymous way to help his students learn French, eventually became the phenomenon that is Etienne. Those early songs turned into albums and concerts, worldwide tours, a documentary, Justin Bieber singing one of his songs before 85 million people on a popular French TV show, and now a book, "Rock Your Class." Laurie & Matt talk to Etienne about the book and what it means to "rock your class," balancing life on stage with life in the classroom, why he still teaches even though he doesn't need to, and what quality he believes resides in the heart and soul of a teacher. Matt even embarrasses himself by auditioning to be his opening act because he took two years of French in high school.

Laurie & Matt go back to a format they haven't used in a while, the commonplace episode, where they pull a quote from a book and discuss its implications on the world of teaching and parenting teens. Matt came across this quote while reading How to Live by Sarah Bakewell, but the quote is from Friedrich Nietszche's book Human All Too Human. Here it is:

"Among the small but endlessly abundant and therefore very effective things that science ought to heed more than the great, rare things, is goodwill. I mean those expressions of a friendly disposition in interactions, that smile of the eye, those handclasps, the ease which usually envelops nearly all human actions. Every teacher, every official brings this ingredient to what he considers his duty. It is the continual manifestation of our humanity, its rays of light, so to speak, in which everything grows...Good nature, friendliness, and courtesy of heart...have made much greater contributions to culture than those much more famous expressions of this drive, called pity, charity, and self-sacrifice."

Laurie & Matt realize that their mission as educators and podcasters is evolving, and that it includes answering the question, "What is the Soul of a Teacher?"

Everywhere they look in the teacherverse they see articles like, "5 Ways to Use Google Classroom," or "How to Build Community Through Zoom," and they're concerned that these might be signs that the robots are poised for a takeover. Their new mission as they see it is to capture the stories of real, human teachers that have been advancing our species since the dawn of time. Like researchers heading into the field to record folk music or disappearing languages, Laurie & Matt are in search of first hand accounts of those human qualities that reside in the soul of those that have dedicated themselves to helping others reach their potential.

Laurie & Matt reach out to the TSW Community and find that they're not alone on the roller coaster ride called, "Why Are Teenage Boys So Challenging?" Apparently, it's not a ride anyone gets in line for, but somehow most parents find themselves on at some point during the amusement park of life. Except, of course, for those few friends that have perfect children and love to let you know while you're suspended upside down about to lose your lunch. Maybe a little splatter will get on their new white shoes.

Part therapy session, part search for answers, Laurie & Matt share the struggles they've experienced along with some of those from their listeners. We learn from those that successfully made it through the ride that there is an end, and that equilibrium is recaptured. In fact, there's a ride you'll jointly, and voluntarily go on later called, "Let's Look Back and Laugh!" The line is long, but you don't care because everyone is happy to be there.

Laurie & Matt address the one habit that makes the greatest impact on teens, and not just from a school outcomes perspective, but from a whole person, emotional, psychological, and relationship perspective. After years of being asked to do work, by teachers and parents, teens have developed a habitual response to that request. At that moment, an unconscious series of moves kicks in, and their lives are either improved or made more complicated. Laurie & Matt address the consequences of their habitual response, how everyone in the teen's universe is affected by their habit, and they offer a few suggestions for how to condition a response that makes life better for everyone.

Laurie & Matt hop on a Zoom meeting with Matt Rhoads, Ed.D, author and educator, for this episode's discussion concerning educational technology (edtech), distance learning, and the future of education. While Laurie & Matt show their age, and their fear that this may be the moment the robots seize control, Matt Rhoads helps massage their anxieties away as they question, "Are We Stuck with Distance Learning?"

The conversation centers around Matt Rhoads' book, Navigating the Toggled Term: Preparing Secondary Educators for Navigating Fall 2020 and Beyond, and how the new reality of education demands that school districts and educators prepare themselves to be ready to move seamlessly between distance, blended, and in-person settings. While there has been an explosion of educational technology in the past decade, the pandemic accelerated the need for everyone to get on board. As veteran teachers, Laurie & Matt admit that adoption of certain technologies could be delayed by those less willing prior to the pandemic forcing school closures, but those days are gone.

Matt Rhoads, however, brings a calm hand and a reassuring message to the conversation, acknowledging that less is more when it comes to technology, and time away from the screen is important to maintain balance.

Laurie & Matt break down their first couple days of the school year, albeit remotely, with this episode's essential question, "How Were Our First Days of Distance Learning?"

Laurie & Matt are teaching from their classrooms, which has a certain dystopian energy as they walk across a campus eerily devoid of student energy. They share their frustrations (limited but growing comfort with Zoom), their triumphs (recapturing the joy of a purpose-filled day), and their questions (how do we connect one-on-one? how are other districts handling Zoom breakout rooms?).

Laurie & Matt discuss the epic failure of Matt's journey in self-publishing his first book on Amazon, how he recovered, and the value of the failure.

Just when an author should be feeling the exultation of completing and publishing a book, Matt recounts the technical difficulties he encountered and how they led to feelings of self-doubt instead of the joy he was anticipating. This failure, it turns out, provided an opportunity for Matt to continue his growth and make improvements to his book that maybe he wouldn't have had things gone smoothly. This of course leads Laurie & Matt to reflect on their roles as parents and teachers, and why we need to allow our teens to fail instead of intervening so often.

Laurie & Matt take a look at those wise sayings that help us through troubling and stressful times, turning to a specific one for this week's essential question, "Is the Serenity Prayer What We Need Right Now?"

Written by Reinhold Niebuhr in 1932, the Serenity Prayer became widely known when 12-step programs adopted it in the 1940s. Here is a commonly used variation:

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.

We have all collected wise sayings over the years, stuffed in our pockets for when life has us on the ropes and we need a thoughtful phrase to bring clarity and calm. With school set to begin, and a pandemic still raging, it's as if the world's schools are all being staffed with first year teachers. It's a new setting, with new demands, and new and scary unknowns that are keeping us up at night. It's times like these when we need to be reminded that there are things in our control (our attitude, our perception, our actions and words), and those outside of our control (the actions and decisions of others, the COVID-19 virus, wi-fi reliability), and focus our energies where our control lies. It's when we lack the "wisdom to know the difference" and get worked up over things outside of our control that we become stressed and out of balance.

When we "accept the things I cannot change," serenity is truly granted, our best selves can operate efficiently and powerfully, just as our children and students need us to.

Laurie & Matt conduct their first interview for this episode, bringing in an expert to help answer the question, "How Can Teachers Manage Time Better?" That expert is Serena Pariser, a rock star educator and author of two books for teachers, the most recent of which is called Real Talk About Time Management: 35 Best Practices for Educators, which she co-authored with Edward F. DeRoche. On her first book, Real Talk About Classroom Management, 50 Best Practices That Work and Show You Believe in Your Students, she was the sole author.

In a strange era when time has seemingly distorted, and veteran teachers are experiencing an anxiety they haven't felt since their first year in the classroom, Serena translates time management techniques and tips for the online, distance-learning environment most teachers will be facing when school resumes in he fall. The interview follows the structure of the book, with Serena first addressing how to adopt a "Time Management Mindset." The conversation then moves onto time management strategies for "Planning," "At School, " and "At Home."

Laurie & Matt discuss the concept of "self-care" in the workplace to improve performance. Laurie plays principal on this episode, and she says three words would be in her head everyday if she were a principal: eat, move, sleep. Drawing inspiration from Tom Rath's practical book EAT MOVE SLEEP, Laurie proposes a straightforward approach to making sure we're ready for the day. While Laurie & Matt take different sides on the alarm clock debate (Matt needs one, while Laurie could do without), they both generally agree on the high priority that should be placed on taking care of ourselves, while admitting that we all have some vices that are hard to kick.

Laurie & Matt tackle a topic most teachers, parents, AND teens were hoping they wouldn't have to this fall. With COVID-19 cases still not under control in most parts of the United States, distance learning looks to be the method of schooling most likely to be implemented in school districts across the nation. So, "How Can We Engage Our Teens with More Distance Learning?" is this episode's essential question.

Laurie & Matt come up with five ideas to hopefully engage students in their learning, despite many of the usual motivating factors like athletics, the arts, and social interaction being absent. Here's what they came up with:

  1. Synchronous Learning. This will most likely be a site by site decision, but simulating the rhythm of the school day as much as possible, with scheduled attendance in Zoom (or other, similar platforms) classrooms is necessary to get our teens in motion. This will also be an assist to parents, and teens themselves, as a schedule with attendance obligates them to their school commitments.

  2. Build Community. Even though we won't be together to play our silly games or physically connect, taking the time to have students interact and get to know each other cannot be skipped.

  3. Teacher-Student Connection. Teachers need to find ways to get to know their students personally, their interests, likes and dislikes, and their goals and dreams.

  4. Build Relevance. Leveraging the information learned about individual students allows teachers to more specifically tailor the relevance of curriculum to students' lives. The more relevant the work is, the more motivated the student is.

  5. Make it Personal. The more that teachers can bring students into the work, allowing them to make choices or infuse their values and interests into the assignments, the more they light up. This won't be possible for everything, but we should make an effort to do it more than we normally do.

In the opening, Matt mentions he's discovered a new band that has him wanting to move to Dublin, Ireland. The band is Fontaines D.C., and you can check them out here: https://www.fontainesdc.com/

Laurie & Matt complete their journey through Matt's upcoming book, TRAJECTORY: The 10 Challenges of High School that Shape a Teenager's Future*, by exploring challenges 6-10. They are:

  1. Deal with Discomfort
  2. Learn
  3. Produce
  4. Compete
  5. Handle Responsibility

In total, the 10 challenges comprise the Hero's Journey that is high school, arguably the four most important years in a person's life. In four short years, immature 8th graders need to be transformed into college freshmen ready to handle the independence of dorm life. To do this, all teens are sent on a quest that has ten challenges purposefully designed to develop aspects of their character that are proven to be useful for success in adulthood. Parents and teachers of teenagers are the mentors for the journey, because journey success is impossible to achieve alone. Harry Potter has no chance to defeat Voldemort without Dumbledore. Written as a guidebook for mentors of teenagers making their way through high school, TRAJECTORY: The 10 Challenges of High School that Shape a Teenager's Future provides not only insight into how the challenges present themselves, but also specific, actionable steps that parents and teachers of teenagers can take to help their teens on their quest.

Please take a moment to subscribe and leave a review! It really helps us become more visible and grow the coalition of caring adults dedicated to the health and wellness of our teens.

*About a week after publishing, Matt had the brilliant idea to change the title and cover of his book. The content remains the same. The new title is Helping Teens Succeed in High School & Life for Parents & Teachers. Catchy, huh? Listen to episode #32 for the full story.

Laurie & Matt shift their "If I Were Principal" segment from their regular episodes to stand alone content in their bonus episodes. After Matt admits that he had erroneously been calling the segment If I WAS Principal" (Microsoft Word's grammar correction showing him the error of his way), he goes on to make a suggestion to improve students' organizational skills. Wistfully remembering the bygone days of every student being given an agenda planner, Matt suggests that technology's encroachment into education has led us to believe that explicit teaching of organizational skills has evaporated because everything is "searchable." Laurie & Matt then discuss ways that we could help our students get a handle on the flood of important information coming their way on a daily basis, and why it's a vital skill to develop heading into adulthood when being late may mean the lights get turned off.

Laurie & Matt preview Matt's book, TRAJECTORY: The 10 Challenges of High School that Shape a Teenager's Future*, which is due out in early August 2020. In his first book, Matt details how high school is an intentionally designed Hero's Journey that all teenagers go through, with 10 challenges aimed at developing vital aspects of their character before heading out on their own into the wilderness of adulthood. Matt argues that high school represents the most important four years of a person's life. All that lies between a dweeby 8th grader and a soldier entering boot camp is high school, which should be evidence enough to make his case.

In this first of a two part series, Laurie & Matt discuss the first five challenges, giving a brief glimpse at the book's contents and structure. The first five challenges are:

  1. Get Healthy
  2. Grow Up
  3. See the Future
  4. Master the System
  5. Embrace Criticism

Intended as a guidebook for parents and teachers of teenagers, TRAJECTORY provides insight into what teenagers face in high school, as well as providing specific actionable steps we can all take to help our teens on their quest to become capable, confident adults. All heroes require the assistance of a mentor on their journey, and that's the role parents and teachers play in their lives. It's exhausting, often thankless work, but it's crucial if our teens have a chance of finishing the journey successfully.

Laurie & Matt debuted a revised format this week. In the interest of sustainability and the increased workload of school looming, they've decided to focus the regular episodes on the essential question conversation, moving the "If I Were Principal" and "That's the Beauty of it All" segments into the bonus content episodes that post every other Thursday. Today's episode, however, features one last beauty, this one supplied by a former student, Blake Martin, titled "What Success Means to Me."

*About a week after publishing, Matt had the brilliant idea to change the title and cover of his book. The content remains the same. The new title is Helping Teens Succeed in High School & Life for Parents & Teachers. Catchy, huh? Listen to episode #32 for the full story.

Laurie & Matt center this episode around the essential question, "What is Stereotype Threat?" Pulling from Claude M. Steele's book Whistling Vivaldi: How Stereotypes Affect Us and What We Can Do, the very real and damaging cancer that is stereotype threat is discussed. Described as a diffuse threat, like a snake loose in the room, stereotype threat menaces any member of a minority when they are in a position to potentially confirm a negative stereotype through one false move or misstep. Originally observed and studied in minority groups' under performance in school, stereotype threat is found to reach into every corner of society.

As is always their aim, Laurie & Matt want to make sure that discussions turn into action. To that end, they offer evidence-based solutions for mitigating the affects of stereotype threat in schools, including:

  1. Growth mindset lessons- helping minority students understand that intelligence is malleable
  2. Self-affirmation exercises- brief writing assignments about personally held values
  3. Increasing minority group representation
  4. Valuing diversity
  5. Being a "warm demander," increasing teacher credibility, and adopting an autonomy supportive teaching style

Episode #19 of Teacher Saves World!, titled "What Are the Most Important Teacher Qualities?" goes into greater detail with #5 in the list of interventions above.

The essential question conversation is book ended by Laurie's idea for lots of murals in the "If I Were Principal" opening segment, and Matt's admiration for the new generation of gadflys in the closing "That's the Beauty of it All."

Laurie & Matt share their Top 5 Concerns with Hybrid School Schedules, from a list they generated that had closer to 75 items. Hybrid school schedules are being widely discussed as a compromise to the battle being waged over whether to reopen fully or to continue with distance learning. This very difficult decision being considered by school districts worldwide, is trying to take into account both public health concerns surrounding the continued presence and spread of COVID-19, and the less talked about but likely greater threat to the health, wellness, and development of our teenagers if schools fail to resume. Our economy is holding its breath too, as children in school is an important piece of its recovery.

Laurie and Matt explored this topic from the perspective of hybrid schedule's impact on students, as well as teachers and parents. Education, health and wellness, and social justice were all filters used for their discussion. Creating a Top 5 list wasn't easy, and like everything else in the world these days it will likely evolve, daily, but here's where we stand at the moment:

  1. Academic inequalities will be amplified
  2. Stress on teachers to maximize limited in-person instruction while simultaneously servicing students through distance learning
  3. High school becoming academics only, leading to severe drop in motivation
  4. Stress on parents leaving teenagers home alone on a regular basis while they go back to work
  5. Continuing decline of teenagers' health and wellness because of increased screen time, reduced activity levels, and lack of structured time
