We had a fantastic Blab last night about how to interpret the numbers coming at us regarding books sales, Amazon, and self-publishing. Why do they matter? Well, it's your industry. Whether you are self-published, small press published, or even traditionally published, we're all in this together. Understanding what we're being told--and its context--is crucial.

On April 25, 2016, Reedsy released its numbers for what it costs to publish a book, and they certainly raised some eyebrows. So I broke them down as well as compared them to the industry standard for editing and formatting rates through the Editorial Freelancers Association.

I had an interesting exchange on Twitter while asking folks what they need in their writing community (speaking of, I'd love to hear your response too!). One of the answers was, "I need more 5-star reviews." When I suggested he rethink the notion as honest, critical reviews are more helpful to us as authors, he insisted that while the editor may see the benefit, the book marketer needs the top-tier reviews.

Well...no, actually. As it turns out, customers like critical reviews!

This also took us down the road of exploring why we fear criticism, how we get passed that, and finally, what does it mean to have a writing community where we can fail safely?

Note: You can join us live on Monday evenings, 9PM EST, over on Blab to join in, ask questions, and join the writing community!
