John Sullivan’s Bio:
John, a dedicated family man alongside his wife Terese, is a career fire service professional and communications expert. He began as a volunteer firefighter in 1995, became a paramedic in 1998, and joined the Addison Fire Protection District in 2000, rising to Battalion Chief in 2024.
Over his career, he served as a Fire Inspector, CPR instructor, dive team member, and key advisor on regional communications systems, while contributing to apparatus planning and serving on an NFPA committee. His service earned multiple honors, including Addison Merit Awards and Run of the Year 2024.
John retired in December 2025 after 25 years with Addison and continues consulting in the fire service. He has also worked with A Beep, LLC since 1996 and was promoted to Chief Business Officer in 2026.

On this week’s show, Scott and Shaun welcome back Retired Chief Tony Pustizzi of the Coral Springs, Florida Police Department (see Episodes 58 & 84) to discuss the impact of a jury's recent, non-unanimous verdict to sentence convicted murderer, Nickolas Cruz to life in prison over the death penalty for his actions during the February 2018 Parkland (Florida) School shooting.
Chief Tony Pustizzi (Ret.) began his career with the Coral Springs Police Department in 1988. Over his 30-year tenure, he supervised every unit within the agency with a strong emphasis on investigations, including homicide and special victims. Tony served on the SWAT team for 15 years where the last eight he was team commander. Tony rose through the ranks to ultimately become chief of police in 2012. He also served as the city’s interim city manager and retired in March 2018 as the chief of police/deputy city manager.
In January 2019, Tony came out of retirement to serve as the special counsel to the new sheriff of Broward County upon his appointment by the governor of the state of Florida.
During the school massacre on February 14, 2018, where a former student entered Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland Florida and killed 17 innocent people and injured another 17 students, Chief Pustizzi, along with members of his agency, arrived at the school within minutes of being notified and was instrumental in organizing a complex law enforcement approach, including stopping and capturing the killer and extracting victims from within the school was initiated.
Tony now conducts trainings nationwide on school and workplace violence preparedness as he is a firm believer that seconds save lives and can attest that the Hero911 app for police would have alerted his officers minutes earlier, possibly saving lives during the incident he was directly involved in.

In light of the often confusing and conflicting media coverage of the recent FBI search warrant on former President Donald Trump's home at Mar-a-Lago, our subject matter expert, Sergeant Scott, takes us through law enforcement's standard process of obtaining and executing a search warrant under the 4th Amendment.
Recently, a 12-member jury delivered a verdict against officers of the Louisville (Kentucky) Metro Police Department's SWAT team. The lawsuit was filed by the officers in 2016 and sought millions of dollars of back pay for "on-call" time, dating back to 2002. The case garnered much attention in the police world based upon its potential impact to work-life balance, as well as the ability to obtain additional compensation for special skills and assignments while in service to their communities.
To help listeners to better understand the concept of police officer on-call pay, the guys discuss some of the common conditions that officers are paid to be “off duty” but still on “standby” for public safety emergencies.

To live his own adventure, Joseph enlisted in the U.S. Army immediately after high school and served on active duty for five years in the 82nd Airborne Infantry. After completing his service, Joseph returned home to obtain a degree in Media Arts and Animation from The Art Institute of Colorado, all while working full-time in service to his community. Joe eventually became a law enforcement officer in Northern Colorado, helping those in need whenever possible.

Former police lieutenant Dave Smith is an internationally known speaker, writer and law enforcement expert. On this week’s episode we return to the Buckeye State to speak with Steve Click, Director of the Ohio Office of First Responder Wellness. We discuss how both his professional and personal experiences have facilitated his appointment to this unique position. With the support of his Governor, Steve is clearly poised to help all first responders and ultimately, the citizens of Ohio. He also explains how his state is taking a progressive approach in addressing first responder wellness.
According to Blue H.E.L.P., more than 940 first responders nationwide have taken their own lives over the last five years, with the majority of those deaths involving law enforcement officers. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, more officers die by suicide than in the line of duty, and compared to the general population, law enforcement officers report much higher rates of depression, PTSD, burnout and other anxiety-related mental health conditions. Research also shows that stress from a career in law enforcement causes higher rates of secondary trauma such as heart diseases, divorce, alcoholism and other psychological illnesses.
Guest Bio: Steven M. Click serves as the Director of First Responder Wellness for the Ohio Department of Public Safety, Office of Criminal Justice Services. Prior to his current position, he served as the First Responder Liaison for Ohio Mental Health & Addiction Services. Steve is a retired lieutenant from the Ohio State Highway Patrol where he served for 36 years, completing his career assigned to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Office of Personnel / Ohio ASSIST program. Steve has been involved in peer support with the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Member’s Assistance Team (MAT) since its inception in 2002 and previously served as the Operational Commander. Prior to retirement, he oversaw all aspects of the team including policies, activations and training.
He has been active in peer support since being CISM trained in 1993. He was deployed to New York City twice after the 9/11 attacks and worked with the NYPD peer support program, POPPA.
He helped bring the Post Critical Incident Seminars to Ohio. He has been utilized as a peer in South Carolina, Kentucky, Texas and Georgia, for their PCIS / STLS programs.
He serves as the lead trainer for several training programs offered by OCJS, having provided training to a number of public safety and civilian agencies across Ohio. Steve graduated from Franklin University, with honors, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Safety Management with minors in leadership and public relations.
Steve is also a graduate of the Northwestern University School of Staff & Command.
Steve is trained in both group and individual peer support by the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation. He is also a certified QPR; Question, Pursued & Refer and Mental Health First Aid instructor.
Steve retired with 36 years of service with the Ohio State Highway Patrol and served in a number of assignments including Commander of Cadet Training, the Patrol’s Motorcycle Unit, the Ohio Statehouse Detail as well as several field supervisory positions. In 1992, he received the Ohio Distinguished Law Enforcement Valor Award, the highest award for valor in Ohio.

In the wake of the recent Oxford Michigan High School shooting, the guys from 3CT are joined by their guests, Retired Chief Tony Pustizzi of the Coral Springs (FL) Police Department and Cyber Crimes Detective Rich Wistocki to discuss some preventive measures to help avoid these tragedies. They examine the need for properly trained and certified School Resource Officers that can effectively interact with school staff, administrators and parents. Also explored are some of Chief Pustizzi’s experiences during the infamous 2018 Parkland school shooting and Detective Wistocki’s knowledge in forecasting and stopping potential threats.

Chief Tony Pustizzi (Ret.) began his career with the Coral Springs Police Department in 1988. Over his 30-year tenure, he supervised every unit within the agency with a strong emphasis on investigations, including homicide and special victims. Tony served on the SWAT team for 15 years where the last eight he was team commander. Tony rose through the ranks to ultimately become chief of police in 2012. He also served as the city’s interim city manager and retired in March 2018 as the chief of police/deputy city manager. In January 2019, Tony came out of retirement to serve as the special counsel to the new sheriff of Broward County upon his appointment by the governor of the state of Florida.
During the school massacre on February 14, 2018, where a former student entered Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland Florida and killed 17 innocent people and injured another 17 students, Chief Pustizzi, along with members of his agency, arrived at the school within minutes of being notified and was instrumental in organizing a complex law enforcement approach, including stopping and capturing the killer and extracting victims from within the school was initiated.

This instructional experience was not solely academic, as he was usually then leading his students operationally either in combat or in arguably the most violent major city in North America. In 1990 Mike spent six months studying at the Dallas Police Academy in Texas, then returned home and joined the Summerville (SC) Police Department. Mike started as a patrolman and eventually rose to assistant chief.
In 1998, he joined the Dorchester County (SC) Sheriff’s Office as operations major. Mike oversaw all aspects of the Office’s law enforcement duties: patrol, investigations, and the emergency response team. He graduated from the prestigious FBI National Academy in 2000. He also won several awards for his work, including Officer of the Year.
Mike went to work for Dorchester 2 School District in 2008 as director of safety, security, and emergency management, handling such responsibilities as liaising with local law enforcement agencies, supervising emergency school evacuations, and much more.
In 2018, Mike returned to his alma mater, this time to work rather than study. He currently is Chief of Public Safety at The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina.

Trooper Bob was born in a refugee camp in Baden, Austria after his parents escaped from Hungary. His family came to the United States with just $500 and made the town of Fairfield, Connecticut home. Trooper Bob is a veteran of the U.S Navy. He enlisted after graduating from high school. During his four year enlistment, he served in Operation Desert Storm and Operation Desert Shield. While serving on USS Mount Baker, he traveled to Spain, Italy, Norway, and Nova Scotia. In August 1994, he joined the South Carolina Highway Patrol. He was stationed in Dorchester County until 2007 when he became a spokesperson. Bob earned the Trooper of The Year award in 2007 for helping a woman whose home had burned down. He is probably best known for his clever safety messages on social media. In 2018, he won an Emmy for his Drunk Driving Emoji Public Service Campaign. Commercials aired across South Carolina and the message was on 170 billboards across the state. In his off time, Bob enjoys spending time with friends and family including his grandson. He loves to volunteer and to help raise money for Special Olympics.
The deadly 2016 shooting of Che Taylor by Seattle Police sparked outrage in the Black community and a level of demand for more police accountability not seen since the deadly shooting of John T. Williams.
Che Taylor was shot in 2016 during an undercover drug operation in Seattle’s Wedgewood neighborhood.
Taylor says going through the process and coming through on the other side with justice for his brother is phenomenal.
“Perseverance is important, but probably one of the most important things, what I’ve tried to teach, is that you have to build relationships,” Andre Taylor explained. “That things move through relationships, and not be afraid to have a conversation with somebody that you disagree with. Don’t feel like I have to agree with somebody 100% of the time in order to build.”
“That was the philosophy I used from day one, and we built relationships — even with law enforcement and with politicians — and through those relationships, we were able to get people involved,” he added.

Sgt. Betsy Brantner Smith retired in 2009 as a 29-year veteran of a large metropolitan police department in the Chicago suburbs. Beginning her career as a police dispatcher at age 17, Betsy became an officer four years later and has held positions in patrol, investigations, narcotics, juvenile, hostage negotiation, crime prevention and field training. She received her four year degree from Western Illinois University in 1991, and was a class officer and graduate of the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety’s School of Staff and Command in May of 2001.
As a sergeant, she supervised her department’s K-9 Unit, served as a field training sergeant, recruitment team sergeant, bike patrol coordinator, Crowd Control Bike Team leader, and supervisor of the Community Education/Crime Prevention Unit. Betsy served on the Elderly Services Team, the Crisis Intervention Team, and was a proud founding supervisory member of NPD’s Honor Guard Unit. Betsy received numerous awards and commendations from her police department as well as many local and national awards for her performance as a police officer and supervisor.
From 1999 – 2003 Betsy hosted various training programs and was a content expert for the Law Enforcement Television Network (LETN), is currently an on-air commentator and advisor for the Police One Academy and was a featured character in the Biography Channel’s “Female Forces” reality show.
She has been a law enforcement trainer for over 20 years and was a content expert and senior instructor for the Calibre Press “Street Survival” seminar from 2003 through 2012 where she also created the “Street Survival for Women” seminar. Betsy is a popular keynote speaker at conferences and events throughout the United States and has trained in various international venues. Since 1995, Betsy has authored hundreds of articles for law enforcement, government and civilian publications including Innovations in Government, Police Marksman, Law and Order, Police Chief, Law Officer, PoliceLink.com, PoliceOne.com, LawOfficer.com and various civilian firearms magazines through Harris Publications including “Combat Handguns.” She served on the advisory board of Police Marksman magazine, is currently a featured columnist and video contributor on both Officer.Com and PoliceOne.Com, and is an author, spokesman, and program host for the National Police Association.
