People with learning disabilities and mental health challenges are often implicitly or explicitly taught to overcome their differences. Try harder, push through, fix and succeed. These messages of normalization can lead to shame, a desire to hide our true selves, decreased likelihood of success and increased mental health challenges.

Today’s podcast episode was first aired live and is sponsored by The Schwab Learning Center at CHC and the National Council for Learning Disabilities (NCLD). Hosted by our very own Natalie Tamburello and featuring NCLD Young Adult Leadership Council alumni – Misha Nicholas, Rachelle Johnson and Stevie Mays – we are excited to share their candid conversation with those of you who missed it. Hear their unique journeys and learn how each learned to embrace their differences as proud parts of their identity rather than deficiencies to overcome.

One of the most important things we can do for our children is to help them develop resilience. A common misconception is that people are either resilient or not; that we’re born one way or the other. In fact, the process of building resilience is a lifelong journey of learning to cope with challenging experiences and adapt well in the face of adversity. It’s important to let our kids make mistakes and be there on the sidelines to encourage, rather than fix it for them. Learn more in our conversation today with experts from CHC’s Catherine T. Harvey Center for Clinical Services, Patrice Crisostomo, PhD, Clinical Program Manager and Psychologist, and Sarah Taylor, MS, Doctoral Psychology Intern. Listen now!

Autism can present in many different ways, but at its core it's about social communication. Autism is usually suspected at a young age because children aren’t developing language or social skills at the same rate as their peers. Sometimes parents don’t want to have their child screened for autism because they are afraid of labels, stigma and limitations. But while overwhelming, diagnosis can also bring support, services and maybe even relief.

Don’t miss this special podcast episode with two CHC experts who are also parents of young children with autism: Sarah Knepper, MEd, Educational Services Manager at EBC Schools and Cristal Byrne, PhD, licensed psychologist at CHC’s Catherine T. Harvey Center for Clinical Services. Join us to hear personal and professional advice for finding empathy, understanding and community while raising a child on the spectrum.

When you hear a sound, how do you respond? You might choose to ignore it or investigate its source. This process of using our senses to interpret a situation and respond in a purposeful way is called sensory integration. When these systems don’t synthesize, whether due to a diagnosis like autism or ADHD or to a skills deficit, it can lead to a whole host of learning and behavioral challenges. Studies have found that 1 in every 6 children has sensory processing issues that make it more difficult for them to thrive in school. In today’s podcast episode, we sit down with CHC’s Catherine T. Harvey Center for Clinical Services Occupational Therapist, Pamela Olson, MOT, OTR/L, to learn how best to support our child’s sensory skills development and what to do when things don’t seem quite right. In today’s podcast episode, CHC’s Catherine T. Harvey Center for Clinical Services experts Dr. Tracy Cavaligos, Licensed Psychologist and Dr. Olivia McDonald, Psychology Postdoctoral Fellow, talk about how to manage social media’s influence and develop skills to check-in with and take care of ourselves. Today’s episode was developed in response to a request from our partners at Palo Alto Unified School District…and while it’s great for all listeners, is intended especially for teachers!

Increasingly, educators are being asked to manage not just the academic and social-emotional wellbeing of their students, but also address mental health challenges and learning differences in the classroom. We know it’s not possible to do it all, but today’s podcast episode shares some structures and strategies to support struggling students and promote a safe, positive learning environment for all. In addition to tips and takeaways, CHC’s Esther B. Clark (EBC) Schools staff Krislyn Conklin, MA and Kaila Sugiyama, MA, LMFT, remind teachers that “recognizing your own humanity in all of this is the most important.”

We often think of learning differences as challenges faced in school. But the reality is that learning differences impact people throughout their lives with implications far beyond the classroom: home, relationships, work and family to name a few. Therefore, it’s important to learn strategies and skills that apply throughout the lifespan. Join us for a conversation with Dr. Nicole Ofiesh, Director of the Schwab Learning Center at CHC, as she shares pro tips developed throughout decades of leveraging neurodiversity in settings from kindergarten to college, classroom to corporate. A must-listen episode for people with learning differences and those who support them!

Many twice exceptional (2e) children feel different, like they just don’t fit in, and can be more susceptible to mental health challenges. They may feel isolated from their peers because of their giftedness and their neurodiversity, whether it be autism, learning differences, ADHD, anxiety or otherwise. Some live with the constant feeling that they are not living up to their ‘gifted’ potential, or feel the weight of the world on their shoulders. With this in mind, how can parents, caregivers and educators effectively support 2e children? Join us for today’s podcast episode as we talk with Christine Pearston, PsyD, licensed clinical psychologist at CHC’s Catherine T. Harvey Center for Clinical Services, who suggests we start by looking at the whole child–strengths, interests and challenges alike.

Most kids complain about school sometimes. But if your child’s gripes come almost daily and they are begging you not to go to school at all, you might be wondering if there’s something deeper going on. Are they falling behind? Not making friends? Does the pace of instruction leave them feeling lost and confused?

If feedback from parent/teacher conferences validates your concerns, perhaps it’s time to consider a different type of school environment. Join us for this timely conversation with CHC education experts, Chris Harris, MEd, Chief Schools Officer and Miki Walker, Director of Sand Hill School, as we discuss the many different types of specialized schools and how to know whether to make the change for your child. Today’s episode is proudly sponsored by Adobe. We are so thankful for their support of this Voices of Compassion podcast! Emotional regulation is the ability to control our emotional state so that it matches the situation at-hand. It is not something we are born knowing how to do, but rather we learn over time. How can we teach our kids to respond to various situations appropriately, even if it means behaving on the outside differently than they are feeling on the inside? In today’s podcast episode, CHC Licensed Clinical Social Workers https://www.chconline.org/people/leeanne-merritt/ (Leeanne Merritt) and https://www.chconline.org/people/karen-moos/ (Karen Moos) share strategies for helping our kids and teens develop critical emotional regulation skills. Almost every day it seems that we are exposed to various acts of violence – school shootings, war, terrorism and more. As a result, our kids can end up feeling confused, frightened and unsafe. In proud partnership with https://www.commongroundspeakerseries.org/ (Common Ground), a locally renowned speaker series for over 15,000 families in over 40 schools, we are excited to bring you this Voices of Compassion podcast episode. While Common Ground is primarily a parent education consortium, this conversation is specifically targeted to mental health professionals in schools and beyond.  We’ve all heard the self-care metaphor for parents: “put your own oxygen mask on first.” But this is just as critical for mental health providers: your own well-being is essential to providing positive outcomes for your students and clients. Listen into this eye-opening conversation with https://profiles.stanford.edu/grace-gengoux (Dr. Grace Gengoux), Clinical Professor and the Well-being Director within Stanford University’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and https://www.chconline.org/people/ramsey-khasho/ (Dr. Ramsey Khasho), Chief Clinical Officer at CHC, as they share self-care strategies for those in a position to care for others.  Resources: Learn more about http://www.chconline.org/clinicalservices (CHC’s Clinical Services) Learn more about https://www.chconline.org/evaluations/ (CHC's Evaluations) Visit https://www.chconline.org/resourcelibrary/ (CHC's Resource Library)

Our brains develop from the back to the front. The last couple of years have been all about adapting to meet evolving and elusive protocols. For students with learning differences, the shifts from online learning to hybrid to in-person (and back) have made a part of their life that is already challenging exceedingly more difficult. Adaptation is a key aspect of Executive Functioning, which can be lacking in those with learner variability. In today’s podcast episode, we sat down with https://www.chconline.org/people/nicole-ofiesh/ (Dr. Nicole Ofiesh), Director of the https://www.chconline.org/schwab-learning-center/ (Schwab Learning Center at CHC), about strategies students can use to build Executive Functioning skills in high school, college and beyond. Parenting is never easy, but raising a child with exceptional talents who also struggles with learning differences (such as autism, ADHD or dyslexia) is even more complex. This combination of giftedness and challenges–known as twice exceptional (2e)–creates a confusing picture for parents and educators. It can be difficult to see the signs of 2e because it looks different in every child. Their strengths can mask their challenges and their challenges can mask their strengths. Today we talk with Callie Turk, a parent of a 2e child and https://www.chconline.org/people/vivien-keil/ (Dr. Vivien Keil), neuropsychologist, about the journey of understanding and parenting these unique and extraordinary kids. It’s so hard to think of our teens injuring themselves intentionally. Today we welcome https://www.chconline.org/people/jennifer-leydecker/ (Jennifer Leydecker) back to our Voices of Compassion podcast to discuss non suicidal self injury (or NSSI) and what that looks like in adolescents. From the minute we become parents, we start fixating on sleep–are our babies getting enough? Too much? Will they ever sleep through the night? Will we? It’s a hot topic because we know how critical it is for healthy development, both mental and physical. As our kids turn to teens, we may monitor their sleep less, but it doesn’t become less important to their wellbeing and academic performance. Teens can face many impediments to consistent, restorative sleep, including stress, with an estimated 70-75% of teens getting less than the recommended 8 hours per night. In this podcast episode, we sat down with two CHC experts–https://www.chconline.org/people/joan-baran/ (Dr. Joan Baran), Clinical Director at CHC, and https://www.chconline.org/people/deepika-bose/ (Deepika Bose), Doctoral Psychology Intern–to learn strategies for helping your teen develop healthy sleep habits. The journey is where we all learn to do hard things. We make mistakes, experience successes (and failures), develop resilience, practice growth mindset and build self-confidence. As parents, if we focus on the destination — winning the race, acing the SATs or getting into the “right” college — our children miss out on all those experiences that serve as the building blocks to social emotional growth. In this podcast episode, we sat down with https://www.futurewiseconsulting.com/about (Jenn Curtis, MSW), co-author of The Parent Compass, to learn strategies that you can use to support your child on their journey towards self-advocacy, acceptance and exploration. Starting kindergarten is both exciting and scary — for children and their parents. Young children thrive when they feel comfortable, safe and secure. But it can be challenging to help your child feel prepared when everything feels so uncertain right now. What can you do to make the leap less worrisome and more fun? Listen in to today’s podcast episode with our guest, https://www.chconline.org/people/natalie-pon/ (Dr. Natalie Pon), Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist at CHC, as she reminds us that — in addition to learning letters and numbers — the real growth that occurs in kindergarten is the development of social emotional skills through play. Only one thing is certain this school year, and that’s the fact that no one knows what to expect. Parents, students and staff are feeling apprehensive about what the transition to full-time, on-campus learning will look like. We may be eager for our kids to jump right back into academics to make up for a year of learning loss, but we also know that they need to feel safe, secure and emotionally ready. In today’s podcast episode, CHC’s Chief Education Officer, https://www.chconline.org/people/chris-harris/ (Christopher Harris, MEd) and https://www.chconline.org/people/kendra-evans-fraka/ (Kendra Evans Fraka, MSW) discuss strategies for a successful start of school, including building a community of belongingness in the classroom, creating routine and consistency while helping kids stay flexible and adaptable, and celebrating the small wins along the way.  Resources: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/schools-childcare/k-12-guidance.html (Guidance for Schools – CDC) Learn more about http://www.chconline.org/clinicalservices (CHC’s Clinical Services)  Learn more about https://www.chconline.org/evaluations/ (CHC's Evaluations) Visit https://www.chconline.org/resourcelibrary/ (CHC's Resource Library)

For over a year, we’ve been sheltering in place, wearing masks and keeping our distance from others. The CDC has recently eased restrictions, and we are gradually coming out of our COVID caves. Already, over half of Americans say they have gone out to eat, while almost 60% have recently visited friends and relatives. As a result, some people’s emotional wellbeing has improved and others are experiencing a decline. Everyone’s comfort levels are different. So how do you know what is best for your family’s mental and physical health? How can you create a smooth transition back into the world? As our children develop their own identities, it’s up to parents to teach them how to interact with other cultures, beliefs and backgrounds. It all starts with self-reflection, developing an understanding of our own cultural beliefs and biases. From there, we can acknowledge the history of systemic oppression against minority cultures, developing compassion and empathy along the way. Finally, and with humility, we can begin to challenge our conscious and unconscious biases. In this podcast episode, https://www.chconline.org/people/tony-cepeda/ (Tony Cepeda, LMFT), teaches us how to encourage our children’s curiosity at home, in order to foster respect and understanding of the world at-large. As parents, we all want to create a safe, nurturing and stable home for our families. And the collective, cumulative trauma of the past year made it harder than ever. And so it makes sense that we might turn to trauma-informed parenting, often utilized by foster parents or those whose children have experienced trauma, for ideas. In this podcast episode, we sat down with https://www.chconline.org/people/pardis-khosravi/ (Dr. Pardis Khosravi), licensed psychologist and Clinical Program Manager at CHC, to learn strategies for supporting our kids and building self-growth and resilience in challenging times. Dr. Khosravi explains what trauma does to a child’s brain, how it may manifest during different stages of a child’s development, and how the research on post-traumatic growth shows that positive qualities can come out of really challenging events.  Resources: Learn more about http://www.chconline.org/clinicalservices (CHC’s Clinical Services ) Learn more about https://www.chconline.org/evaluations/ (CHC's Evaluations)

As Head of Adolescent Mental Health Services and Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist at CHC, https://www.chconline.org/people/vidya-krishnan/ (Dr. Vidya Krishnan), sees her fair share of anxious children and parents. But what if the therapy is precisely the thing they’re most anxious about? In this podcast episode, Dr. Krishnan shares ways to introduce therapy to our children: as an opportunity to learn how to use our words better and handle big emotions. By framing it as a safe space to manage hard things, allowing them to set some of their own goals, and creating incentives for them to engage, we can alleviate feelings of blame or shame and help ease any misgivings. The right therapist will take the time to build a relationship with your family, help identify pain points, and – in collaboration with you and your child – develop goals to craft a unique, customized plan towards achieving them. And when you put it that way, it doesn’t sound so scary after all.  Resources: Learn more about http://www.chconline.org/clinicalservices (CHC’s Clinical Services ) Learn more about https://www.chconline.org/evaluations/ (CHC's Evaluations)

Sometimes we forget (when they give us the silent treatment or shut themselves in their room) that what our teens really want is to be heard. To feel validated and seen for who they really are as they formulate their identities independent from their parents. But connecting with teenagers in a meaningful way can be hard, especially in this time of competing demands where we are juggling multiple roles and the lines between home, school and work are blurred. In this podcast episode, we sat down with teen expert and CHC Clinical Program Manager, https://www.chconline.org/people/jennifer-leydecker/ (Jennifer Leydecker, LMFT), to get her advice on using curiosity and compassion to truly connect with your teen. You’ll hear mindfulness skills like “observe and describe,” as well as tips on how to make space to start tough conversations. Parents with kids of any age will appreciate Jennifer’s wise insights, both as a licensed therapist and mom of three.  Resources: Learn more about http://www.chconline.org/clinicalservices (CHC’s Clinical Services) Learn more about https://www.chconline.org/evaluations/ (CHC's Evaluations)

Feeling anxious about coming out from behind your computer screen? You are not alone. According to the APA, nearly 50% of Americans say they feel anxious about getting back to ‘normal’ post-pandemic, enough for psychologists to coin the phrase "re-entry anxiety." Given that we haven’t interacted in-person without some degree of fear or uncertainty in over a year, the feeling is understandable. So how do we manage our anxiety and emerge from our COVID cocoons with confidence and compassion? Tune into this podcast episode, featuring an in-depth conversation with licensed clinical psychologist and CHC’s Chief Clinical Officer, https://www.chconline.org/people/ramsey-khasho/ (Dr. Ramsey Khasho), whose wise words as a clinician and father of three are sure to facilitate your family’s transition back into the world. Last March, we thought we'd be sheltering in place, wearing masks and social distancing for a few weeks. Yet here we are over a year later, tired and stressed, stretched beyond what we thought we could endure. We're experiencing what mental health experts call a “collective trauma” – overwhelm, isolation and the loss of what life used to be. Some have flourished during shelter-in-place and are anxious about re-entry. Others have lost so much that it feels like only thing left to hold onto is hope. In this episode, CHC’s https://www.chconline.org/people/tony-cepeda/ (Tony Cepeda, LMFT) and https://www.chconline.org/people/karly-crockett/ (Karly Crockett, LCSW) talk about individualized responses to stress, trauma and grief, and how weathering storms together can lead to greater resilience for you and your family.  Resources: Learn more about http://www.chconline.org/clinicalservices (CHC’s Clinical Services) Learn more about https://www.chconline.org/evaluations/ (CHC's Evaluations)

The share of Americans reporting symptoms of anxiety disorder, depressive disorder, or both roughly quadrupled from June 2019 to December 2020, according to a Census Bureau study released late last year. Anxiety can be sneaky, popping up in a variety of cognitive, behavioral and physical ways. Because it affects everyone, anxiety is an opportunity for us to share our own emotional experiences with (and model healthy coping strategies for) our kids. We actually need a good balance of anxiety in order to motivate us but not stop us in our tracks. In this podcast episode, CHC’s https://www.chconline.org/people/joan-baran/ (Joan Baran, PhD )and https://www.chconline.org/people/elizabeth-beth-moroney-ma/ (Beth Moroney, MA) share signs and symptoms to look out for, while teaching us how to be our children’s cheerleaders and reminding us to always put our own oxygen masks on first. As the mom of a daughter with dyslexia, Dewey Rosetti knows first-hand that having a child with a learning difference can take as big a toll on their confidence as their report card. But as an LD advocate and author, she also knows that normal doesn’t exist and neurodiversity can lead to brilliance. In today’s podcast episode, we sat down with Dewey to glean her best advice for parents to support their bright kids who are struggling in school. Our favorite takeaway? “If you can think about seeing your child as an individual with his own strengths and challenges and not be swept up in competing with the kid who happens to think the way the classroom is designed...that is the road to his success.” Tune in to hear more!  Resources: Learn more about https://www.chconline.org/clinicalservices/ (CHC's Clinical Services) Learn more about https://www.chconline.org/evaluations/ (evaluations at CHC) Parenting Bright Kids Who Struggle in School by Dewey Rosetti The End of Average by Todd Rose The Strength Switch by Lea Waters Normal Sucks by Jonathan Mooney

Stress can manifest itself in a variety of physical, emotional and behavioral symptoms, which can make it harder for kids to learn and contribute to risk of developing mental health difficulties. Tune in as https://www.chconline.org/people/patrice-crisostomo/ (Patrice Crisostomo, PhD), Clinical Program Manager and Licensed Psychologist at CHC, explains our bodies’ stress response during COVID and how we can build resilience during challenging times. You’ll walk away with a better understanding of why you (and your child) feel the way you do, a sense of self-validation and a doctor’s orders to “be kind to yourself.”  Resources: Learn more about https://www.chconline.org/clinicalservices/ (CHC's Clinical Services) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0061906190?ie=UTF8&tag=quarandquir-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0061906190 (The Explosive Child) https://www.health.harvard.edu/staying-healthy/understanding-the-stress-response (Understanding the stress response) https://www.apa.org/news/press/releases/stress/2020/report# (Stress in American 2020) https://www.ted.com/talks/madhumita_murgia_how_stress_affects_your_brain?language=en (How stress affects your brain) https://www.parentingscience.com/parenting-stress.html (Parenting Stress: What causes it, and how does it change us?) https://www.apa.org/topics/resilience (Building your resilience) Child psychologist and author, Ross Greene

How do you support your young child’s development in a pandemic, when so much of it depends on play, exploration and social interaction? Tune in as our guest, https://www.chconline.org/people/shirit-megiddo/ (Shirit Megiddo, MS, CCC-SLP, BCS-CL), Speech-Language Pathologist at CHC and mom of a two-year-old son, shares typical developmental milestones and ideas for keeping young children engaged both on-and offline as the pandemic wears on. It’s hard to know what’s normal and what’s not these days as our children approach a full year of mask wearing and social distancing. We as parents are constantly trying to balance what’s safe with what’s optimal for our child’s development. Shirit reminds us that the time that you’re already spending cooking and cleaning and gardening and folding laundry are perfect launchpads for developing communication and life skills. She even helps us figure out how to incorporate peer-to-peer and pretend play into our child’s day, and reminds us to never underestimate the power of a cardboard box, a paper towel roll and an imagination.  Resources: Learn more about CHC’s Clinical Services https://www.chconline.org/resourcelibrary/when-should-you-seek-the-advice-of-a-speech-language-pathologist/ (When Should You Seek the Advice of a Speech-Language Pathologist?)

Teachers are usually on the front lines of our child’s well-being, noticing learning, behavioral or attention challenges, supporting them in the classroom and relaying them to us as parents. With our kids learning from home, it’s much harder for teachers to identify and defuse potential causes for concern. While many parents are busy with their own work and responsibilities, there are some red flags to be aware of that may indicate your child is struggling with more than just slouching over a screen. In today’s podcast episode, CHC’s Chief Schools Officer, https://www.chconline.org/people/chris-harris/ (Chris Harris, MEd), helps us distinguish between learning differences and Zoom-fatigue; collaborate with teachers to ensure our child’s needs are being met; weigh the pros and cons of transferring schools; and keep goals and outcomes realistic.  Resources: Learn more about https://www.chconline.org/clinicalservices/ (CHC's clinical services) Sign up for a https://www.sandhillschool.org/visit/ (Sand Hill School virtual tour) Register for the live Q&A session featuring Chris Harris, MEd, Ask an Expert: Returning to School

Life has perhaps never felt more out of our control than it has over the past year. But refusing to accept our reality doesn’t change its outcome. Rather it increases the suffering that comes from the futility of fighting against it. Enter Radical Acceptance: the practice of letting go of the illusion of control and being willing to accept things as they are right now. In this episode, Patrice Crisostomo, PhD and https://www.chconline.org/people/leeanne-merritt/ (Leeanne Merritt, LCSW), discuss the life-changing power of radical acceptance and share strategies for making the conscious choice to stop resisting and denying the way things are. It doesn’t mean we have to like or agree with the situation, just acknowledge it in order to reduce the suffering caused by trying to change something that’s out of our control. Only when we accept it all the way, just as it is, can we work on changing our behaviors and emotions in order to improve our situation and, ultimately, our lives.  Resources: https://dialecticalbehaviortherapy.com/ (Dialectical Behavior Therapy website) Sitting Still Like a Frog: Mindfulness Exercises for Kids (and Their Parents) by Eline Snel

With distance and hybrid learning, parents have front row seats like never before to their children’s strengths and challenges. Has your child memorized elaborate sequences of historical events but can’t remember to turn in homework? Are they doing advanced math for fun but won’t fill out a simple worksheet for school? Does your child talk about complex topics but struggle to read at grade level? You may have a twice-exceptional (2e) child! Listen to this week’s episode to hear Callie Turk and Yael Valek, founders of Resilience and Engagement for Every Learner (REEL) and parents of 2e kids, discuss effective approaches for supporting 2e learners. Callie and Yael share strategies for building self-advocacy, communication skills and social supports while connecting with teachers to champion each child’s unique learning profile. If left unidentified or supported, twice exceptional students can be prone to anxiety, loss of self-esteem, school burnout or depression, but if properly nurtured, they can come up with solutions that others can’t see. Adds Yael, “they’re the ones changing the world.”  Resources: https://www.reelpaloalto.org/post/intro-to-2e-one-pager (REEL 2e Fact Sheet) https://www.reelpaloalto.org/2e-distance-learning-tips (REEL 2e Distance Learning Tips) https://www.reelpaloalto.org/post/what-to-do-twice-exceptional-students-and-distance-learning (What to Do? College is a big decision, especially for those with mental health challenges and even more so during a pandemic. Thankfully, our guest on today’s podcast is an expert at getting adolescents to open up, let their guards down and feel heard. Hear from https://www.chconline.org/people/katherine-reeves/ (Katie Reeves), Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner at CHC, talk about strategies to foster healthy conversations on even the toughest topics. Katie talks about the importance of setting goals, asking questions, validating teens’ feelings and putting ourselves in their shoes. Still at an impasse? Try her two-step process. And remember: it’s OK to tell our kids that we don’t have all the answers, that we’re nervous about the conversation, or frustrated that we don’t know how to help. It’s the perfect opportunity for parents to show our kids how human we are.
