The evolution of free to play games has changed drastically over the years. From gotcha games, to live service there are different styles out there that try to tap into our lizard brain and keep us playing or buying any random cosmetic that gets dropped. But there are some titles out there that tend to rub the fan base the wrong way, like server wipes every season with Once Human.

Hello Cubies! This is a blast from our past here with an episode to do spooky month proud. Way back in 2022 we released an episode of our favorite horror games and what made them special to us. So, with Christian out of the country we figured what better time then now to revisit this idea and what better time then a few weeks before Halloween! ------------------Hosts: Christian & Chris Don't forget to leave us a cheeky review and we will read them on the show. Feels like a broken record at this point but this has been a great year for games. And Atlus did something amazing, they released another demo (like Unicorn Overlord) that allows you to play a good chunk of the game. Just have to say that the demo does not disappoint, but rather really drives the point home that we will be diving head first into this one. Christian also has played a lot more of Bloomtown and for a game that has such a cozy exterior the content and story are so rich and will tug at all of your emotions. ------------------Hosts: Christian & Chris Don't forget to leave us a cheeky review and we will read them on the show. Some big hitters this week! We are digging through the back log a little bit here with Christian playing through the Mass Effect series for the first time ever. Exploring the vast worlds and rich story with fresh eyes is really fascinating. Then we travel back to current times with the Legend Of Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom. Finally we are able to play as Zelda with a very interesting mechanic to explore. Then we chat about a new cozy, nostalgia heavy, murder mystery, persona like game that is Bloomtown: A Different Story. So muuch to talk about and so many great mechanics too dive into.

Chris beat Astro Bot and we speculate on whats next for that franchise. Maybe a Kingdom Hearts inspired Sony-verse? And Dungeons Of Hinterburg asks the question of what wouldn't you do on a vacation. Magical portals open so why not plan a trip to fight monsters to decompress from your day to day life. But what beaches in games would you actually want to visit for a weekend getaway?

Hello all! Before we get into Astro Bot Christian has a little chip on his shoulder that needed discussion. It is becoming much more common in games and media now but too many titles have little to no pay off at the end. You finish a story and instead of enjoying a twist, or witnessing a huge epic event, or just a good payoff the ending is spoiled half way through and nothing exciting happens. Its especially annoying with games you spend 40+ hours in. But anyway...Astro Bot is amazing and it is just further proof that we NEED a new Ape Escape game!

Hey there! Throughout media certain jobs have been made to look more appealing then they actually are. There is more drama and gun fights thrown in to add to the mystery of what the job actually entails. Whether is Indiana Jones surviving a nuclear blast in a fridge, or fighting a giant Trex in a cave like Tomb Raider the job has a lot of added flourish. But is this a bad thing? Is this just escapism at its finest. And how many people have been introduced to these jobs through media and have made it their life's passion to go into the field. Let's talk about that!

We open hot this episode with some super great tech issues with Game Pass. But dive head first into the world of simulation games with inZOI. If you have not seen this game it looks insane! The character creator alone is so realistic its slightly uncomfortable. While Christian was never one to get into these types of games, Chris helps him better understand the appeal of these fictional worlds.

And Chris finished up Pikmin 4, a solid gaming experience. Fun puzzles and great visuals. So sit back, relax and enjoy some thoughts on these games, plus some shows too!

Hey everyone! We are back with a little update episode here. We have been combing through our backlog of retro games all the while trying to keep up with the newer titles as well. We dive deep into Eiyuden Chronicles, a great love letter to the Suikoden games. But is it sticking too close to the source material? Is it missing some of the quality of life tropes that we have come to expect from modern RPGs. Also, Pikimin is back in a big way! The perfect pick up and play game for everyone!

Looking back at this console it really was made to be enjoyed with others. So many of their biggest games were not single player experiences. Atlus games has continued to surprise us. We have been on an Atlus kick lately and each one of their games is so different from the last but there are a couple things that persist through out all of them. And that is that they are innovative with captivating stories that have memorable characters with true life issues that are very relatable for the player. And we really dive into the time traveling, Game Of Thrones styled world of Radiant Historia. We both agree that this is the best version of time travel in anny game we have played. And oh man that combat system is so unique mixing turn based, grid based tactics and strategic turn order to make a very interesting experience.

But instead of just picking them together we wanted to try something different and do a draft style pick of our top games. The picks will really surprise you these are definitely not the top rated games on the PS1! Spoiler one is Yugioh!

Like Pokemon Conquest, a cute Pokemon tactics game that will take 100's of hours to complete as you conquer feudal Japan. Or taking it back to Timesplitters, remember that game? Voice control has become a common place item in our day to day lives. With things like Alexa and Siri we are using our voice to turn on lights, search the internet, send messages and find out what song that just was. But when it comes to games voice controls have always been tricky if not just down right broken. But thats not without trying. For a small while there voice controlled games were coming out and testing the boundaries of this technology. But it was quickly realized that this may not really have a place in the world of games. From Hey You Pikachu's complete disregard to what you are saying to the existential ramblings of Seaman it just always felt out of place. For years we only had a few viewpoints in the world of gaming when it came to story telling. Year after year we were shown the same viewpoint of WWII through ever evolving graphics. But now we are starting to get new story tellers in games and are finally able to see the world through different lenses. Game like T'challa are giving us a slice of life from New Caledonia, or Saviorless showing us the struggles of game development in Cuba. There is a common thread that we have brought up many times. Games are changing and forever evolving. But there is something that remains a constant, and that is we want our games to be fun. Although the level of fun in games seems to be dropping with our new larger games. There is something to be said about simple games that it is easier to see the fun in them. Games were made to be shared and enjoyed with friends in groups like at arcades or in schools. The state a gaming reviews needs a change. The number system just does not work and too many big critics out there are reviewing game genres that they do not even like. So, we are getting biased reviews and only large games with big budgets are getting the attention when many smaller titles that are evolving their respective genre are being left behind. Hey there Cubies! The game mechanics we are diving into this week are backtracking and fast travel. The topic of back tracking can be a bit of a sore subject for some gamers out there. It has been said that backtracking in games is due to a lack of assets and is just a waste of time for the player. But while for some games that may be the case, it is not always. Hey there Cubies! We've said this time and time again but this year has been an amazing year for RPGs. What has been great to see recently is there are so many games coming out recently with direct roots to the classics like Moonring and Ultima, or Sea Of Stars and the Legend Of Dragoon Series. Hey Cubies! Storytelling has so many different tools in its belt to captivate the audience. One of which is introspection. Where introspection is the examination or observation of one's own mental and emotional processes. There are different ways in which story tellers include this is their tales. By putting the viewer in the mind of the character, or even slower moments in which the scene can breath and the viewer or player can interpret what they just witnessed. With the growth of games we are seeing some many amazing examples of introspection in games. Some we chat about are Journey and Cyberpunk 2077.--------Follow the link bellow to go to our various socials and be sure to join the Discord to talk with us and the community directly. Hey Hi and Hello! The ways in which games are advertised and released have drastically changed in recent years. Many game devs will go into press conferences promising the world, or rather 18 quintillion worlds only to fall flat on day of release, like in the case of No Mans Sky. This obviously angers the gamers out there that fell for the hype. Some even take it so far as to send death threats to the developers and company. Obviously this is a drastic response to the situation but there is something interesting here. For the games that. continue to get updates and new content added to them the gamers come back and even rave about the once "garbage" game. It almost makes it okay to release games that are broken or do not deliver what is expected or promised. Games like Cyberpunk 2077, No Mans Sky, Destiny and maybe even Starfield will fall into this category one day. --------Follow the link bellow to go to our various socials and be sure to join the Discord to talk with us and the community directly. Hey there Cubies! Over the past few months there have been some amazing massive open world games released. Like Starfield, Tears Of The Kingdom and Baulder's Gate 3. But are these games just large with no purpose? Should games be smaller on scale to allow for more elaborate content? There is a real charm with smaller worlds in games. There are less waypoints and random spots where a player may just wonder for hours. But is that the point of these large games now? Is it to wonder without a purpose, or should these games have a million waypoints to places the player would have never known about? There are a lot of questions this week, thats for sure!--------Follow the link bellow to go to our various socials and be sure to join the Discord to talk with us and the community directly. The shear amount of memorable and impactful titles that have come out in the past few months have made everyone in the industry start floating the idea that video games are going through a renaissance period. With games like Baldur's Gate 3, Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild 2, Final Fantasy 16, Resident Evil 4 Remake, Deadspace Remake and so much more. For the past few years indie games were leading innovation in games, but it looks like AAA is trying to take that title back!

Hey there Cubies! While eco-terrorism is rather common place in other sources in media, it is not a typical plot point in games. Or if they are, they are almost. an after thought in the story. But there are a couple games out there that actually have in the forefront and make it an essential driving force for the characters, motivating their decisions as they move through the story. One that has done so in a way that is approachable and makes you think on a deeper level is Final Fantasy 7. Growing up up it was just a fun game to play, but now learning and thinking about all the nuances really hit hard. Then of course the government gets involved with Thunderbird Strike! They even tried to call for an investigation against those that funded this game!

Hey there Cubies! As gamers get older the games they love need to age with them. Franchises have done this for years across multiple sources of media. And there is a common way. in which. games have tried to keep up with the times. That is by making a gritty. reboot of their franchise. Sometimes this goes great, and other times it tends to be too much of a departure from the original message of the game. And with the release of Final Fantasy 16 and the fact that it is actually. rated M for mature we are now seeing grit in a franchise that has been accessible by all audiences before. But why. is this such a common practice? Is it just. a way to shock people into looking at their game or movie? Or is it a reaction to the age of their target audience?

Hey Cubies! We are back another week discussing a hot topic when it comes to games and media. There is a common thought that media can incite violence in an individual . Can they make you question the government, or are they able to make you complacent with the world around you? Let's talk about it!

Hey there Cubies! Recently the question of "can game be isolating?" has been brought up to us. To many people video games can appear to be a way to keep someone from being social in any. way shape or form. We still have that stereotypical image in our mind of someone playing games in a dark basement all by themselves. But games have evolved to be a way for people from different walks of life to come together. They give us an instant connection with another person, something to talk about and build a friendship from. They allow us to chat and play with people from the opposite side of the globe, and through these experiences we can even learn about other cultures, or even more about ourselves.

Hey there Cubies! Immersion is something that all designers try to create in their games. It gives the player the illusion the game is alive and that all choices made by the player matter. While a lot of this is just an illusion created by the designers there are some games out there that push this to new heights. Games like Rain World use AI to generate everything from the animations to the behaviors that the animals follow. We are starting to see more games using AI in the creation process, but what else can it be used for? Can it make a truly endless game? Make NPCs react to everything changing in their world, all the while based on their behavior patterns? Hey there Cubies! Throughout the years there have been a multitude of ways in which games have been made. There are a plethora of game engines out there for designers to choose from. And each one, while can make an amazing game, have their own little differences. But what did they use before game engines were a thing? They actually used machine language to make their games and it took have an engineering background to do so. Game engine take what we want and convert it to machine language for the computer to understand. So, with their invention game design has been brought to the masses for better and for worse. But when it comes to deciding which engine to dedicate your time towards, that can be a crippling choice. Don't worry though we have gone through the history of engines and tested out quite a few to give discuss some of the strengths of these engines. Ultimately though what matters is what you have access to because what matters the most is the passion behind the game not the engine. --------Follow the link bellow to go to our various socials and be sure to join the Discord to talk with us and the community directly. Hey there Cubies! With the recent trailers of Final Fantasy 16 there have been some interesting and important conversations happening in the gaming world. FF16 producer and director Naoki Yoshida expressed his feelings about the term JRPG in a recent interview. He let the world know that it is in fact a discriminatory term used to segregate the genre. Most fans of the genre may have been a little surprised to hear this. But looking at when the term was used more heavily by the media it really makes sense as to why. It was during a period in which Japanese developers were going through a bit of a dry spell and American companies were making the claim that there RPGs were better. They further hammered this point by pushing for the terms JRPG and WRPG (Western RPG). A genre should not be determined by its origin, but rather for its mechanics. I mean the first "JRPG" was created by a Dutch designer. So it has been a long time coming, but it is an important conversation to have. --------Follow the link bellow to go to our various socials and be sure to join the Discord to talk with us and the community directly. Hey there Cubies! We are diving back into the world of architecture in video games. This week we look into the style of Art Deco. A style that was used to show off wealth and prosperity, to bring hope back to the people especially after struggling through the Great Depression. But there is another side to Art Deco that when used properly can really be used to invoke feelings of despair, elitist culture and totalitarian beliefs. This week we chat about Bioshock, Atomic Heart, The Outer Worlds, Cabaret and more. So enjoy this dive into architectural design and how it enhances games!--------Follow the link bellow to go to our various socials and be sure to join the Discord to talk with us and the community directly. Hey there Cubies! We are back again with another fun topic this week.  There has been a real resurgence of remastered games coming out and they really have been a treat to play. Capturing the excitement we felt when playing them all those years ago. And being able to share them once again with this new generation of gamers. It is a really amazing thing since a lot of these games just are not playable anymore by todays standards. And some titles have this strange phenomenon attached to them. They play and look how we remember them. Now I do not mean that the graphics are the same, but rather that these upgraded visuals are how we remember them. It is really weird, but interesting to witness. This week we discus Metroid Prime, Final Fantasy 7, Shadow Of The Colossus, Dead Space, Tony Hawk and more! --------Follow the link bellow to go to our various socials and be sure to join the Discord to talk with us and the community directly. Hey there Cubies! We are continuing our conversation with architecture in game by diving into the world of brutalism. Typically brutalism is looked at as cold or devoid of life but it is so much more than people think. Its use of raw materials to allow the building itself to speak tell a story that is outside of the architect that designed it. With the proper lighting if can really add a sense of mystery to a scene. One of the best examples of how to use brutalism in games is Control. It is almost impossible to not see this game when looking up brutalist architecture in games. But this style has been used in multiple games to great success. Like Mass Effect, Mirrors Edge, North, Assassin's Creed, and so much more. So, let's dive into this weeks conversation!--------Follow the link bellow to go to our various socials and be sure to join the Discord to talk with us and the community directly. Hello Cubies! Welcome back to another week of video game discussions. We have talked a lot about mechanics, art and intent for video game designers but there is a category that seems to be forgotten when talking about games. That being the architecture in games. For years it has just been a background piece and many games do not put a major focus on it when designing their levels. But we are seeing more and more games try and put more emphasis on the overall architecture to help boost their level design, along with creating a stronger immersion for the player. Locations are becoming more grounded in reality and basic architectural practices are being focused on. This really is showing the overall growth of the game design field. --------Follow the link bellow to go to our various socials and be sure to join the Discord to talk with us and the community directly. Hey there Cubies!  This week we are diving through the world of crowdfunding. It has truly changed the way that video games get released and has evolved the indie market into what it is today. Long gone are the days in which an unknown creator has to rely on a large publisher to make their projects come to fruition.  Now we can ask our audience to support our endeavors. While this is a wonderful thing, there are times in which the designers see dollar signs and begin to slack off on the project, or the game is just not what the people expected. So let's chat about the good and the bad of crowdfunding!--------Follow the link bellow to go to our various socials and be sure to join the Discord to talk with us and the community directly. Hello Cubies! HBO has just released its new show "Last Of Us" based on the critically acclaimed video game. Now video game movies and tv shows are not anything new at this point, and their track record is not really great if we are being honest. Most video game ideas do not translate well to the silver screen. But lately we have been seeing better renditions of video games out there. And with that we have to ask the question, are writers getting better at making things a reality, or are video games becoming more like movies. Right now is an interesting time because there are so many titles that have potential movies or shows that will be released in the near future. And what is great is that they are from all different years of gaming history. So we are excited to see how some older titles might hold up vs newer more cinematic games. --------Follow the link bellow to go to our various socials and be sure to join the Discord to talk with us and the community directly. Hello Cubies! The indie field is something that we really appreciate here at GlitchCube and we wanted to take a look back at how it all exploded into the field. At first we wanted to just do an episode on game jams, but after doing some research and seeing the incredible list of games that came from game jams this became more of a history lesson on indie games. Without game jams we wouldn't have games like Celeste, SuperHot or The Binding Of Issac. The core concept for these games were developed in a very short amount of time, some only 48 hours while others were developed in a week. But either way this is an incredibly short amount of time to develop a game. But these restrictions on time force the designers to really focus in on what makes the game fun and push their games past fake boundaries that we have set in the gaming field. Luckily now game jams are so well known that at any given weekend you can find one going on, pushing genres and testing limits to continue to give us amazing indie games!--------Follow the link bellow to go to our various socials and be sure to join the Discord to talk with us and the community directly. Hello Cubies! Welcome back to another mini-series here! We are diving into the mythos and lore used in video games. Looking at how accurate they are, and why they might be used as often as they are. To kick out this series we are diving into the mythos of Greece. Greek mythology is rather well known and understood by many. It is easy to latch onto and give game designers plenty of inspiration to sink their teeth into.  With the success of God Of War Ragnarok it felt only right to start with the roots of this franchise. Hey Cubies! There has been a lot of changes in video game journalism since the 70s when the first magazine was published. We have seen how things change and evolve through printed word, to early internet blogs, to reader feedback fueled forums and video format reviews. When looking back it is really amazing how much things have changed, especially when you start to think that there has never been a clear cut way of writing about video games. While things have changed throughout the years due to readers responses, some believe that the way video game journalism is handled now is wrong. That it needs to looked at a restructured due to the toxic style it has taken on. But that nature is also the beauty of it, through our interactions with this media source we have changed it countless times and we can do that again, hopefully for the better.

The story is fantastic and really tugs at your heart strings in some very memorable ways. We also discuss some other games that have caught/re-caught our eyes from the GBA. Hello Cubies! We are back another week with an interesting episode for you. Through out games there are many titles that have the same theme or driving force behind them. It has gotten to the point for some titles that the main reason for the quest is not interesting or is almost an after thought for most players. The question here is, is this a bad thing? Or is it important to have a simple story/theme to bring people in and capture a wider audience? Are these ideas "played out" because we have played too many games? Let's find out! Those being the ones that we talk about social situations in gaming. It. is always interesting to dive into these topics because they are so misunderstood, or mis-represented. VR meet ups are becoming more and more popular and are falling to the scrutiny that chat rooms have encountered for years. Am I really talking to who they say they are? But is that really important? Is that the point of VR meet ups, or is it an interesting opportunity to be someone you are not and escape your. day to day life?

From the massive Duke controller to all the shooters on the platform this was not a system that we really dove into in our youth. But there are some amazing titles that were looked over and deserve their recognition. Games like Otogi, American McGee's Scrapland and Phantom Dust! There are other obscure titles that really pushed the system and have created a cult following now a days but these titles felt like they pushed things a little further. It is interesting because now we look at indie titles to be innovative and change things up, but that was not always the case. So enjoy these titles and who knows you might find a new favorite here!

Hello Cubies! This week we tackle a statement that we say at the start of every episode. In our intro we discuss "the art of games" but there are those that would disagree with that statement. One of those individuals is Roger Ebert, a critically acclaimed critic. Many will know his name, but some may not know that he had a very strong view point when it came to video games. His claim is that games can never be art and we not see anything that will change his mind on that. We obviously disagree with this statement but you also have to look at when this was said. It was in 2010 before a lot of games that have pushed the envelop and have shown us what they can be. But what do you think? is there truth behind his statement? Or was he just biased?

Hello Cubies! In the past we have dissected many mechanics and showcased how they can be used differently in many games. This week we discuss some mechanics that may be easily overlooked, but make games so memorable when used properly. Some of these mechanics may be easily forgotten and just fade into the background. But does that mean that they are actually bad? Or does that mean that they are actually genius? Does good design fade, or does it stick out at the player? Let's find out in this weeks episode!

Hello Cubies! This weeks episode is one that really means a lot to the both of us. Games have always had a bad rap when it comes to how they can be beneficial for development. But in the past we have tried to change that stigma by showing how they can be helpful for things like depression, PTSD, and inclusivity. This week we will be discussing the benefits of gaming when it pertains to autism. And we were lucky enough to chat with a parent that discussed some of the effects they have seen on their little one as they journey through games.

You can portray the emotions that are felt in difficult situations but getting people to fully grasp the reality oof the situation is almost impossible. So just like the movies, video games have hyper realized the experience of war. They have made the players feel like immortal heroes fighting for the cause. Creating a delusion that hides the truth oof war. Luckily there are some games that aim to capture the true emotions in war. They are not afraid to show the moral implications of battle and deserved to be played, studied and appreciated. So let's dive right in to this weeks episode, the anti-glorification of war!

Hello again Cubies! This week we dive into the world of environmental story telling! Now some of you may be asking what that is exactly. Well the easiest way to learn is to listen to the episode. But it is an amazing tool for game designers to deliver lore and grow the world based on the players actions.  Most of the time we are given options and can see the direct effects that will come from those choices. But what happens when the choices you make are not clearly laid out, or they effect something that may happen later in the game? Well lets find out in this weeks episode!

Welcome back all you Ghouls and Ghosts! This week we kick off the spooky season by taking a deeper look at atmospheric horror games and how they have evolved over the years.  From the vidsuals to the sound design they have scared us to death throughout the years and we have a great appreciation and fondness for the experience. Here we go! Back at it again and this time we bring you a truly devastating failure in gaming history.  We of course are talking about the Sega's fall from grace and what really bizarre situations lead to their failure in the console wars.  We are diving into the last two consoles that Sega released, the Saturn and the Dreamcast.  While some may call these a flop and others may say they "were just before their time" there is something that both sides can agree on, and that is that these systems have a very interesting history behind them.  So pop in those headphones and enjoy another entry in the Dark Ages of gaming!

Welcome back Cubies! We continue this little mini series this week with some more "failures" straight from the dark ages of gaming. The focus is the 3DO, which on paper is a failed system but they did have some rather interesting ideas that did cause many designers to have their games showcased on the 3DO. But ultimately their model was not able to continue and it fizzled out just as quick as it appeared. We also dive into the wonderful/creepy world of FMV. These games are a trip to watch and even trippier to play. The content that they cover are so vast and potentially problematic. Hope you enjoy this weeks conversation!

Welcome to the Dark Ages oof gaming! This week we begin our next mini series on the failures in gaming history. While there are many "failures" out there there are some stand outs that have a rather interesting story.  Here we discuss two creations that really did not hit their mark.  The infamous gaming console by Nintendo the Virtual Boy and Romaro's pet project, Daikatana.  While media has portrayed these titles as black stains on these creators records there is something that we can still learn by looking into them.  Thanks for listening!

Whats up Cubbies! Welcome back to another fun filled episode! This is the start of a new mini series on gaming mechanics. Each week we will be diving deep into a specific mechanic that is crucial to gaming.

This weeks mechanic is death! We go through the history of death in games and how much it has changed or evolved over the years.  From its early beginnings of forcing players to continuously feed quarters into the cabinet as they stare deeply into the black void and watch the neon lights stream across the screen, to being able to develop a deeper understanding of mental illness. Death in games has changed into a strong narrative tool to be used by designers to help weave their wonderful tales for players to enjoy!

This week we look at Rogue-likes/Rogue-lites as a whole and look a little deeper at some of their new installments like Hades and Krumit's Tale.  This genre has changed and evolved over the times but one thing has remained the same through out.  They are quite punishing and in that the enjoyment comes.  With each run you feel a little stronger, not just through your player but through your natural instincts that begin to sharpen each time you take a fall.
