French Voltaire’s phrase “Perfect is the enemy of good” is a quote from an Italian proverb from the 1770s, that had roots in a phrase from the early 1700s, that had roots in a common phrase from earlier centuries all the way back to Aristotle. Humanity has been struggling with this problem for a long while, and it probably explains a lot of the nuance we all experience. (Sourced from Wikipedia.)

Gabe’s ability to synthesize diverse information into poetic and resonant explanations continues to amaze me. While I don’t know what sources Gabe to synthesize their remarkable statement about iron and humanity, I’ve included some very interesting articles from WGBH PBS NOVA, the American Museum of Natural History, and the Elsevier Science Direct Journal about iron, the stars, and us. These public documents have been shared with a request to please support each of these fantastic educational resources.

While I shared a cup with Pat and Ken Parker, we gathered around this warm nugget of golden thought, discovered something wonderful, and stumbled upon a question.

Once Upon A Time ran from 2011 to 2018 with whimsy and heartache, just like fairy tales themselves.
What a world, huh?
A whole lot has happened since the summer of 2020: the Covid-19 pandemic, societal upheaval and divisions, world chaos and upheaval, I feel a little lost for words.
The construction and remodel of my imaginary coffee shop has reached a fever pitch with sawdust, boxes, and paint (not necessarily in that order,) and there’s a lot is happening in my own life as well as in the world.
So…in the face of … everything, I’ve remembered the conversation I shared with Dr. DJ Kinney, historian, and host of the podcast, The Cold War Vault, which examines those frightening and dangerous times in world history.

From this place, two years into a pandemic that seems never-ending even while there might be an end in sight, we might ask: “Are we post-pandemic? What the future might be like?
How will we know what’s strange after everything that’s happened in the past two years has felt strange?
So, I posed this question to my friend Pat Parker.

Mae West’s wisdom: There are many different versions of Mae West’s quote about keeping a diary. I’d recommend just typing “Mae West Keep a Diary” and going from there. GoodReads is a good place to start.
Mark Twain’s wisdom: In nearly every source, Mark Twain’s quote remains constant, History doesn’t repeat itself, but it does rhyme.
The unexpected closure due to staffing challenges continues.
We had a full slate of staff for a little while, then one of us fell ill and, well, it became a cascade of us taking care of one another through sleepless nights, bringing one another broths, fluffing pillows, and trying to stay hydrated.
It’s brought to mind how the people in my life inspire me through encouragement and care.
It reminds me of a conversation I had with Scott Cooper Tilton in 2020. I hope you find it encouraging as well.

Y’know when you have a plan in your mind and you’re just about to start putting that plan into action? Whether it’s planning something tangible like your meals for the coming week, or a creative project like this new redesign and construction for this coffee shop, there’s what we see in our mind's eye as that plan takes shape, and even begins to feel attainable; we might even feel secure in our plan. There’s a little space in that process where a certain hope in that plan ignites as we step into the future.
A lot can happen in that little space. Here’s Sage's pearl of wisdom. And Here's Hoping.

O merciful Creator, I have squandered my days
with plans for many things.
This was not among them. But at this moment,
I beg only to live the next few minutes well.
For all I ought to have thought
but have not thought;
all I ought to have said
but have not said;
all I ought to have done
but have not done,
I pray thee, God, for forgiveness.

What comes to mind when you hear the word “hobby” or “artistic” or “creativity”?
Hearing Alice Kitchel, whose artwork inspires such deep and warm movement within my imagination, speak about the challenges she encounters in her relationship with creativity, changed my perspective a little.
It's often been said that having some creative outlet matters for my mental health, some hobby of some sort that doesn’t only involve working at my job, making meals to be eaten, cleaning the house (okay, collecting the dust bunnies), or doing any of the other necessary productive tasks that keep my life on track.
During my conversation, I realized I didn't have a creative outlet so I asked Alice about it. Her answer blew me away.

Welcome back! Thank you for your patience during the remodeling at my imaginary coffee shop. We’re still in process with the final stages of construction… y’know, it’s the little things that take the longest time.
And that’s what this first episode is all about: the little things. The individual words we use seem small in the context of a whole language, however, the meanings of the words hold deep reservoirs in our lives.
Anna Morgan introduces us to a new way of experiencing two words, powerlessness and optimism, and helps us discover something precious in between.

The first time I asked someone “what does hope mean to you?” there was a long pause before they answered. Looking back on that conversation, I think we were both surprised at how difficult it was to answer that question. It’s a simple four-letter word, right? I thought it should be a simple answer.
Not so simple after all.
So, I posed that question to my friend, Anthony Monti.
Here’s a pearl of wisdom from his response.

Looking back at those first months of the Covid-19 pandemic, recalls a surreal sense of everything being on hold, suspended between the before times and the gaping, unknown of the future.
Cuz it’s hard to step into the future when you’re on completely unfamiliar ground… or you don’t trust the ground you’re standing on... the future seems even more alien and threatening.
Lucy Day lit a candle in my mind to help me see into the darkness & unknown of the future and feel equal to the task, even in the midst of the uncertainty. And it helped me really feel grounded when I say…..

There is a lot happening in the world. In fact, it seems that we’re all living through some truly historical, history-making times.
In the midst of all the change and disruption in the world, it can be easy to wonder “what in the world is going on?”
In the context of human history, we are a blip along the thousands (and thousands) of years. And yet all we know about human history is what’s happening to us right now, in the world.
So, I asked Nathaniel a question about human history. Here’s the jewel that comes from our conversation.

If you’re curious about Gabe’s quote, The Origins of Iron Atoms, it’s transcribed below:
Iron atoms were first forged in the heart of dying stars going supernova, and the only way that megafauna like humanity can evolve (to the best of our understanding) is by taking advantage of the structural integrity of iron atoms to carry oxygen, so in a very real way, we all breathe because of stars that lived and burned for millions of years and then died in a burst of light and fire that made the atoms we depend on.

Gianni’s pearl of wisdom is this: In exploring those words, those right words that can mean so much to each of us, there is a possibility of discovering what truly matters in our lives: Each of us has some words that form and inform our experience and give us guidance, allowing us to recognize where we happen to be in our life, whether we’re sitting, standing, reclining, or leaning against something bigger than us because we’re just so damn tired of it all.
Wherever you are in your world, there are words that can express your experience and allow your identity and your reality to be honored, so that YOU can have a place at your own table in life.

It’s the summer of 2021 when this episode is released, and from this place, it can be hard to think about the future in the wake of the pandemic, not just in the world but in our own personal lives.
Knowing where we are in the world, knowing what tomorrow will bring, even with the usual annoyances and minor inconveniences that we encounter along the road…I know that I’m not the only person who misses knowing what tomorrow will bring.
From this place of unknowing, I post a question to Roberta Damon about Hope. While we didn’t come up with an answer, we discovered the possibility of rephrasing a question.

The Covid-19 pandemic brought the world simultaneously to a screeching halt while also speeding everything up to a frantic pace.
During the height of community spread, we struggled to flatten the curve even as we dealt with an infodemic from all the news sources and social media feeds.
Take-out became curbside and we discovered contactless delivery, while (for a little bit) the only available drive-thru was for Covid-testing.
We socially distanced while trying to create Covid-bubbles and quarantteams to connect with friends and loved ones while staying physically distanced and trying hard to not act like covidiots or be maskholes.
Amidst all that…
What does hope even mean anymore?
Each one of my guests receives a list of thematic questions from which they can pick and choose. Then we sit down and have a conversation about the things that matter to them.
Here’s a little glimpse behind the scenes with one of Kathrin's guests, Sunflower, one of the hosts for the And They Were Roommates podcast (here's a link! atwr_podcast). Come on in, have a seat. It’s good to have you here. This promotional trailer won’t take long. Enjoy.

There are a lot of places online where you can learn about how the Covid-19 pandemic has changed language across the world. Here’s a cool NPR article about how this affected the Oxford Languages, maker of Oxford English Dictionary.

Y’know that feeling when you first open the door of your favorite coffee shop and walk inside?
Welcome to Here’s Hoping: Conversations with Kathrin, a podcast dedicated to the pearls of wisdom that sometimes get lost in the shuffle of a busy life, especially in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
It seems nearly every aspect of our lives has been affected or changed: in some ways, everything’s more complicated, in other ways, there seems to be a lot of things that are being reviewed, examined, rediscovered, sometimes reclaimed.
So, I'm inviting people I know, people I love people, and I've never met before to talk with me about some essential aspects of being alive. And here, at Here’s Hoping, you’ll find some little Pearls of Wisdom from each conversation that has been isolated for you, so you can discover, and consider, ruminate, entertain, question, explore, redefine or even laugh about.
Each episode will be short enough to carry with you and meaningful enough to nourish you along your path.
Come on in, have a seat. This won’t take long. It’s good to have you here.

Welcome to Here’s Hoping: Conversations with Kathrin.
All our conversations happen in my imaginary coffee shop where you can take a little break for a few moments. I know, you’ve got places to go, people to see, stuff to do, and a future to move into: but your visit here it won’t take long, and you might find something worthwhile while you’re here.
I'm your host, Kathrin Gabriel-Jones. Welcome. I'm glad you're here.
