Dan Stoner and Mike Musto have been in this business for quite some time. Stoner comes from the world of big advertising and publishing before coming to Hemmings, while Musto made a name for himself as an automotive journalist and show creator. What do they have in common? Well, everything and nothing. They’ve got different tastes in cars and are both jealous of each other’s grooming habits, YET, they both love everything automotive culture has to offer. Thus, an idea was hatched, and The Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ was born!

Let's break down some eye-opening figures for 2024. According to Fortune.com, the average price of a new car stands at $47,338.00. Pair that with the average new car payment of $738.00 or the slightly lower average new car lease payment of $606.00, as reported by LendingTree.com. Meanwhile, the average payment on a used vehicle comes in at $538.00.

These numbers hit hard because they underscore the financial strain many Americans face. To afford these payments, you'd ideally be earning around $60,000 annually, which incidentally is just about what the average American makes at $59,384 per year. And remember, that's before factoring in essentials like housing costs, student loans, insurance, utilities, and the ever-present expenses of raising a family.

It's a stark reality: auto loans trail only home mortgages as the largest category of debt in the country. On this episode of the Hemmings Hot Rod Podcast, Mike Musto and Ryan Douthit of Driving Sports TV dissect this phenomenon and try to uncover its roots.

Dan Stoner, Hemmings Creative Director, is no stranger to project cars. From his Stoner-T with its blown HEMI, to a killer little T-bucket, a flat bottom drag boat, and of all things, an Edsel, some would say that Mr. Stoner is indeed, and automotive masochist. Case in point, a 1952 Henry J that once belonged to his dad, and that Dan has now taken under his wing for a restoration and rebirth if you will - but here’s the thing, the car hasn’t been on the road since 1967. Originally purchased by his father back in the late 1950s, it was used as a daily driver for some time. It then went to a family member, until after years of use the little Henry J was put out to pasture in the family barn until Dan rescued it and shipped it to California. On this episode of the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ, Dan Stoner sits down with host Mike Musto to tell us what’s in store for the Henry J that’s been in his family for almost 70 years.

Over the last two decades, the idea of what a pro-touring or resto-mod car is has been drastically redefined. In the beginning we were treated to mild suspension and drivetrain modifications, but now, with advancements in technology and manufacturing, these cars have been sent to heights that have redefined what’s possible. Wisconsin based Speedkore is one such coach builder that is taking the idea of what a custom car can be and flipping it on its head and their latest creation, a 1970 Dodge Charger simply known as “GHOST” is a prime example of that. With a body that’s constructed entirely from carbon fiber, a bespoke chassis, and an interior that should be the topic of design studio discussions, Speedkore is reimagining what classic vehicles can be. On this episode of the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ podcast host Mike Musto sits down with Senior Business Development Manager, Tom Porter and Lyle Brummer, Speedkore’s Director of Design to learn a little bit more about how Speedkore creates some of the most brilliant coach-built vehicles on the road today.

To help us answer these questions and more we’re joined today by Ryan Douthit of Driving Sports TV. Ryan’s specialty is reviewing the latest and greatest in the off-road and SUV segment, and he even has his own test facility to do it. Last week Dodge took the wraps off the brand new and beautifully designed 2024 Dodge Charger and to say the automotive populous went nuts would be an understatement. First, there’s a lot to digest here as the new Charger will be offered in both two and four door variants and with a choice of either EV or ICE powerplants (ICE comes in 2025). But more so, the enthusiast crowd seems to be torn for one simple fact – it doesn’t come with a HEMI. Now if you’ve been following automotive news, you’ll know that the HEMI v8 is at the end of its lifecycle and can no longer be produced, thus the inclusion of the new twin-turbo Hurricane inline-6.

However, even though Dodge is giving us both an EV and ICE version, AND the choice of both two and four doors, people still seem tweaked. That’s why on this episode of the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ podcast we’ve brought in Hemmings own Evan Perkins and Bryan McTaggart (both diehard muscle car guys) to give their take on the new 2024 Dodge Charger.

Hemmings Creative Director, Dan Stoner is a bona fide hot-rodder if there ever was one. From his insane HEMI powered Stoner-T to his direct-drive drag boat, to the fact that the man tools around the city of San Francisco in a 1974 Ford F250 with a gallons-to-the-mile 460 big block under the hood. Dan is the guy we turn to when it comes to traditional hot rods and hot rod culture. That’s why when one of the most famous hot rods in history recently made an appearance at the 2024 Grand National Roadster show in Southern California, Dan got excited.

Not only is this a car that influenced him in a host of different ways, but he also has an odd connection to it that he’s going to divulge right now on this episode of the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ Podcast!

Earlier this year host Mike Musto made a post about how he wanted to put 10,000-miles on his 1968 Charger in 2024. There were comments and questions, but not so much about the miles, but more so about the engine and drivetrain combination. The specs on the engine are mild. A 440 cubic inch big block with iron 906 heads that were bored .30 over, a 470 lift cam, with an 800 double-pumper on top. The transmission is a 727 with a reverse valve body mated to a gear vendor through an 8 3/4 rear with a 3.55 gear – as for power though, Musto really had no idea what the old lump made.

Enter Hemmings own Evan Perkins, our resident engine guru. He suggested that Musto throw it on the dynamometer at Westech in Southern, California, a mere 450-miles from Musto’s home. Not only would that tell him the power output, but as Perkins explains, using a dynamometer is one the best ways to tune your vehicle and possibly even get some extra power.

Mention the Ring Brothers to any enthusiast that cherishes and adores modified, and coach build muscle cars, and odds are the reactions you’ll get will be quite good. For almost two decades brothers Mike and Jim Ring have redefined what muscle cars could be in ways few could have imagined. They’re first build happened in 2005. It was a 1967 Ford Mustang known as REACTOR and when the public got wind of it, they knew then and there, that the Ring Brothers where here to stay.

Since then, the brothers have created some of the most memorable and stunning muscle cars the world has ever seen. Case in point, this year’s 2023 SEMA show, where the brother’s debuted two new creations. The first was TUSK, a stunning 1969 Dodge Charger complete with a 1,000 horsepower Hellephant crate engine under the hood, and the second was Paramount, a 1961 Classic Rolls Royce with a 640bhp supercharged LT4.

On this episode of the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ Podcast Mike Ring joins host Mike Musto to talk about how the Ring Brothers got started, and how, after almost two decades in business, they’ve got no plans of slowing down.

Why aren't young people as into cars as they once were? Is it the rise of ride-share services, the shift in priorities towards sustainability, or the favoring of eco-friendly transportation. Or perhaps the allure of technology and gadgets has surpassed the appeal of traditional car culture. Whatever the reason, there seems to be a movement away from the once iconic symbol of freedom and independence.

Now I’d like you to forget everything you’ve just read, and meet 18-year-old Riley Trask, and her father, Dane. For the last four years, under her dad’s mentorship, Riley has not only created her own YouTube Channel, Riley’s REBUILDs, where she’s become an old pro at rebuilding carburetors, but in that time, she’s also set up a small automotive own business with some of her friends. There are few people in this industry more enthusiastic about their job than artist and Senior Design Manager at Stellantis, Dan Zimmermann. For many of us, our love of the automotive hobby came from family, and for Dan it was no different. Now of course, growing up in his grandfather’s body shop didn’t hurt, but it was more the guidance of both his father and grandfather that really left an impression. From there it was art school and befriending those like-minded in the way of design, until ultimately his craft was honed into the excellence it is today. On this episode of the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ Podcast, host Mike Musto sits down with Dan to talk design philosophy, where inspiration comes from, aesthetics, and more importantly, what’s gained by sometimes drawing outside the lines and not following convention.

When it comes to the car hobby, host Mike Musto has one goal. Own and experience as many vehicles as you can before you die. It’s a lofty one we know, but on the surface it kind of makes sense if you do it correctly. If you’re of this mindset, then are a few rules you need to follow. First, be financially responsible. Don’t go into hock for something you can’t afford, regardless of how bad you want it. Second, when you find a vehicle you want, try, and take emotion out of it (this one is tough). Lastly, and the most important step, back into what the cost of ownership will truly be. On this episode of the Hemming Hot Rod BBQ podcast, host Mike Musto and Ryan Douthit of Driving Sports TV sit down and talk about how Mike was recently talked back from the ledge of a financial mistake by a very good friend.

It used to be that to see concept cars back in the day, you’d have to wait what seemed like years. You’d see them in the pages of a magazine, or at the big automotive shows, and if they were good, they’d make you stand back and gawk with wonder. However now, in the 21st century, automotive artist can create stunning automotive concepts in a matter of days utilizing some amazing software.

Abimelec Arellano is one of those artists, and with a following of almost 75,000 fans on Instagram, his popularity is growing like wildfire. His conceptual automotive art constantly asks the question, “what if?” and his creations and mashups will make you rethink what you thought you liked. For instance, what if Porsche had built an overlanding rig out of the misunderstood 928, what would it look like? Or how about if Lamborghini took a Miura and went NASCAR racing? Or maybe even still, a Ford Crown Victoria that received the same hot rod treatment as the Mustang SVT Cobra R - would that intrigue you? The temperature gauge. If you’re a hot rod, classic or muscle car enthusiast, that little dial can be the bane of your existence. Just picture yourself, sitting in traffic on a 95-degree day, as your eyes are locked on that little gauge waiting for it to climb to the moon. While that’s happening, the fuel in the carburetor is starting to boil causing the vehicle to vapor lock and run poorly. Then there are those drum brakes, the ones that almost sent you sideways when you made that panic stop earlier – remember those?

It's time folks. It’s time for EFI, AC, good brakes, cooling, suspension, and power windows. It’s time for reliability and enjoyment. It’s also time to stop catering to those who don’t own YOUR vehicle so you can start driving again with a smile on your face. There are those who will fight against this, who will say they’re only original once - and they’re right, but only partially, because everything currently can be undone. On this episode of the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ Podcast, we talk about the joys of modification and how, if done correctly, they’ll made your ride wonderful again.

When it comes to cars, and more importantly, the driving experience, a lot of folks out there say they prefer a more “analog” experience when they’re behind the wheel. But what does that actually mean? For most, it means piloting a vehicle that is mechanical in most of its workings, and not digital. For instance, a vehicle with a drive-by-wire throttle, direct-injection and things like radar cruise control is most certainly not an analog experience. Whereby older vehicles that are mostly free of computers and digital technology, are.

On this episode of the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ Podcast, Elana Scherr, Senior Features Editor at Car & Driver, sits down with host Mike Musto to discuss why they both gravitate to vehicles that are on in years, but fully up to date when it comes to the driving experience.

30 years ago, the last of the Fox Body Mustangs rolled off the assembly line. And over the course of its 14-year production run, the original sharp-angled 1979 model was transformed into the brawny 5.0L that are now coveted by enthusiasts. They were at home on every boulevard and burnout box during the cassette era and nowadays many of us wax nostalgic for the one that got away.

Today on the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ Podcast, host Mike Musto sits down with Hemmings own Terry McGean (Fox Body owner) to talk about why these little 5.0L Fords are now sought after by collectors the world over.

The debate on electrifying classic vehicles has been in full bloom with the hot rod community for some time. On this episode of the Hot Rod BBQ Podcast, Hemmings own Dan Strohl joins host Mike Musto to talk about the EV industry and how it pertains to the enthusiast. From electrifying older vehicles and the costs incurred, to Mr. Strohl’s very own Chenowth EV buggy project, this is a great episode that peaks behind the curtain of EV hot rodding.

A few weeks ago, we did a podcast highlighting an upcoming Camaro build that we here at Hemmings were going to undertake. It was for a worn out 1987 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z that we had purchased that was simply tired. It had an old rod-knocking 350 small-black, a worn-out suspension system, and although the transmission was good, it was an automatic which simply didn’t flow with our idea of what a performance car should be. So, with the help of some great partners (Edelbrock, American Powertrain, Summit Racing, U.S. Radiator and more) we tore into it and rebuilt the sucker in the span of two weeks at our very own Sibley Garage up in Bennington, VT.

We also filmed a killer YouTube series that’s currently being edited together for your enjoyment, but that’s going to take a minute. Back in the mid-1980s, classic muscle cars weren’t that cool, there were just old. Cars like Bandit Trans Am’s, Chargers, AMXs… sure, they had a following, but they weren’t sought after like today. Hi. It’s Mike Musto, your host, and I’m here to tell you that this episode of the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ was a hell of a lot of fun. As an accomplished journalist, Eddie’s words on everything from new cars to vintage Porsches have helped us understand what’s going on in the crazy four-wheeled world that we live in, and as an automotive O.G., his wisdom on car culture helps us to understand where the future of transportation may be headed.

What’s even better is that this is just a great conversation between three cars guys who touch on everything from how they got their starts in this industry, to how the automotive landscape is so rapidly changing. I hope you enjoy this one, because I know we did… Cheers - Mike

Opened in 1943, and housing over 170 antique automobiles, motorcycles, and aircraft the Crawford Auto and Aviation Museum in Cleveland, Ohio was one of the first of its kind in the United States. Its exhibitions are some of the most well curated in the country as preservation, not restoration, is the museums’ main goal.

Bradley Brownell, the co-founder of Radwood, a specialty car show that celebrates those vehicles from the 1980s and 1990s, is an automotive and motorcycle journalist, and has been recently appointed Director of the Crawford Auto and Aviation Museum. On this episode of the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ Podcast, we sit down with Brad to talk history, as well as what he has instore for the future of the Crawford.

He built an art deco car hauler out of a firetruck that was shown at the Quail Lodge during Pebble Beach week. A hot rod woody out of a bullet-riddled Hudson that was pulled from a field, and a rolling pizza oven complete with a swing-out BBQ for a restaurant owner. Ben McCloy, the owner of Jack Dick Customs in Martinez, California isn’t your everyday wrench, nor in fact, is he like any builder we’ve ever seen.

A mechanic and craftsman, McCloy’s brain doesn’t seem to work inside the realm of normal thought when it comes to vehicles. Instead, that dome atop his shoulders seems to produce some of the coolest vehicular ideas we’ve seen to date. On this episode of the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ podcast, Ben sits down with us to discuss where his inspiration comes from, how he feels about new technology, and how videogames have influenced the next generation to get into hot rodding.

You can’t call yourself an automobile enthusiast if you don’t respect the cars from the 1980s and 1990s. From the fox body Mustang and F-body Camaro to the transaxle and M-cars from Porsche and BMW, these two decades bestowed on us some of the greatest cars to ever roll-on tarmac. This week on the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ podcast host Mike Musto, along with Hemmings’ Terry McGean and Mike Austin, discuss how the 1980s got us out of the smog laden and dismal performance vehicles of the late 70s, and then how the 1990s combined style, power, and technology, in ways never before seen in modern automobiles. We also talk about the current pony car market and identify vehicles from these two decades that we believe may become collectible.

There’s something about floating down the interstate in a 5,000-pound two-door coupe that makes your problems disappear. Maybe it’s the 10-foot-long hood, or the pillowtop seats that cradle your posterior in supreme comfort. Or maybe it’s the feeling of being the absolute king of the road, that is until a semi-truck comes by.

The great American land yachts produced from mid-1950s until the mid-1990s had a spectacular run. Their style and comfort defined decades, while their open road smoothness seemed like something that was invented by the automotive Gods. On this week’s Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ podcast, Mike Musto, along with Hemmings own Mike Austin and Rob Einaudi (all former yacht owners) sit down to discuss America’s love affair with some of the largest cars ever produced.

As one of the most coveted muscle cars in existence, the 2nd generation Dodge Chargers built from 1968-1970 are sought after by collectors worldwide. To some, they are the epitome of muscle car perfection, and to modify them in any way is considered sacrilege by many an enthusiast. Thankfully, builder, fabricator, racer, and Charger enthusiast, Chris Birdsong could care less about that, which is why he’s amassed a following of over 100k who joyfully view is Charger antics online.

We’ve been following Chris for quite some time, but it wasn’t until after we attended Muscle Cars at the Strip last month in Las Vegas, that we knew we had to have him as a guest on the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ podcast, as it was here that he destroyed the autocross in not one, but three of his Chargers. This is a great show about road trips, racing, fabrication, and most notably, creating memories in those old sleds that many of us have in our garages.

They’re the outcasts and the unloved. Those automobiles that even when new, were relegated to the “less than desirable list”. We’re talking about cars like the AMC Matador, Pontiac Aztek, Plymouth Breeze and the Reliant K cars from Chrysler (to name a few). One undeniable fact however is that these cars were at one point purchased new and loved by their owners, and in some cases, they’ve even developed a fan base.

Alan Galbraith recognized this, then took it upon himself to create Concours d’Lemons, a show that celebrates the odd, unwanted and the unreliable, and the people who love them. On this episode of the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ, Alan walks us through the genesis of the Concours and how it came to find a place alongside some of the most exclusive automotive events in the world.

With gas prices seemingly climbing by the minute, used car prices in the stratosphere, and what seems like a mass shortage of parts supplies throughout the industry, we here at Hemmings decided to bring back a voice of reason, and one of our favorite people to the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ podcast.

John Voelcker edited Green Car Reports for nine years, publishing more than 12,000 articles on hybrids, electric cars, and other low- and zero-emission vehicles, which means he knows a thing or two about efficiency. On the flip side, he’s also a rabid enthusiast who recently took a 2,500+ mile road trip in a pair of untested 30-year-old quasi-British imports, which means he also fits right in with us here at Hemmings.

On this episode of the Hot Rod BBQ John gives us some fuel saving tips, we talk about EV newcomers LUCID and Rivian, as well as his new YouTube series “Tempting Fate Tours”.

And while the skill and fortitude of the drivers is nothing short of amazing, we thought it was time to give a nod to those who bring that coverage to us in the comfort of our own homes.

Ryan Douthit of Driving Sports TV is no stranger to the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ. We’ve talked with him about car buying, technology, and a host of other topics as well. That aside though, he’s also one hell of a content producer. So much so that he was recently asked to cover the East African Safari Classic Rally that was just held in Kenya. Some have been abandoned, while others have been neglected due to a lack of interest, time, or funds. At first glance, you may not think of Dylan McCool as the savior of these neglected old rides but trust us when we tell you that this soft-spoken guy from Tennessee, is just that. Scotty Birdsall of Chuckles Garage in Santa Rosa, California was our 2nd guest ever on the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ podcast, and as it’s been well over a year since we’ve had him on, we decided to check in with him and see what’s been happening. Turns out, A LOT. For instance, in addition to churning out some of the coolest hot rods around, he’s since opened Resolute Motorsports, a company that specializes in overlanding air-cooled Porsche 911s. We then spoke about his 2022 Pikes Peak effort which sees him out from behind the wheel of Old Smokey, and into the seat of a Le Mans Prototype LMP1 car. His land speed racer Toyota mini-truck effort came next, along with WOOSHIE-BOOSHIES, the two words that best describe the modern-day turbo charger. This is a great show with one of our favorite people, so grab a seat, take a listen, and welcome Scotty Birdsall back to the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ Podcast.

Back in the late 1990s, the import scene here in the United States was just kicking off. Many traditional hot-rodder’s laughed at the thought of a small displacement Honda or Toyota lining up against their big-block muscle car at the strip, but in no time, those traditionalists were getting beat and going home with their tail between their legs. Then, in 2001, The Fast and the Furious came out and further cemented performance-based imports as a mainstay in American car culture.

This was also the time when a high school student named Neil Tjin from Florida, began playing with, and designing some of the coolest imports around. Fast forward almost 25-years later, and Neil is still going strong, but now, as they owner of Tjin Design, instead of designing for himself as a hobby, he’s one of the most well-known builders of SEMA vehicles for the aftermarket and OEMs. There is however, one main difference in what Neil builds, compared to many of the vehicles that show up at SEMA. Simply put, his cars work. Thus, please welcome Mr. Tjin on a new episode of the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ podcast as we talk about the genesis of the import car seen, and what it takes to build a functional vehicle for the biggest automotive trade show on earth.

If you were born between 1950 and 1980, then the odds of you growing up in the back of a station wagon were pretty good. Wagons are of course, those wonderful sedan-based rectangles that could cart up to seven people around in relative comfort. They were the family workhorse and up until their decline in the mi- 1990’s, basically occupied a spot in almost every suburban driveway.

Mid-way through the wagon’s lifecycle however, Chrysler introduced the modern minivan, and then later, the modern SUV which proved to be the first two nails in the station wagons coffin. We at Hemmings however, LOVE wagons (and vans too), which is why this episode of the Hot Rod BBQ podcast is dedicated to those wonderful family haulers that we so fondly remember.

When it comes to muscle cars, we all have our favorites. From Chevelles and Chargers, to Mustangs and AMXs, there are some vehicles that just speak to us in ways we can’t explain. With damn near flawless lines, and no shortage of engines, rear-ends and transmission, it’s no wonder they’re some of the most sought after cars ever created.

Therefore, we thought it only fitting that, seeing as we have two of the most desirable versions on our very own Hemmings Auctions (a numbers matching 1971 Hemi ‘Cuda 4-speed Shaker, and a ’71 440-6, 4-speed drop-top), that we’d bring on Mopar expert Scott Smith of Harms Automotive on this week’s episode of the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ podcast, to explain why these two Mopars are just so damn special.

If, however you are, and you dig everything that encompasses American muscle cars, trucks, and late model horsepower, then you should probably check out the Instagram page for AmericanMuscleHD. The creators named is Garrett Alexander Reed, and for the last eight years he’s curated it to the tune of 2.2-million followers and millions upon millions of comments making it one of the most engaged automotive pages on Instagram.

On this episode of the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ podcast, we talk to Garrett about the loss (and then recovery) of his prized Chevrolet Monte Carlo, audience engagement, content, as well as the future of social media.

Mark Smith founded Factory Five Racing back in 1995, building one of the world’s most popular kit car companies. He sold his interest in that company to his brother in 2012. His latest project is Smyth Performance, which creates Ute kits for the Volkswagen Jetta & Beetle, the Dodge Charger, the Jeep Grand Cherokee and more.

Andy Hesterman was one of Smyth’s first customers back in 2016, and when his first driveway build video went viral, appearing everywhere from Motor Trend to Maxim, he soon built a business doing Smyth Ute conversions, and currently has a waiting list over six months long.

We caught up with Mark and Andy and talked about Mark’s career, Andy’s favorite builds, and their plans for the future. Check out the conversation and let us know what Ute they should build next!

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to go back to the heyday of the muscle car? To see new Charger’s, Chevelle’s and Mustangs right off the dealer lot rolling around as everyday cars? For many of us, being a kid in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s would have been a dream, but for Wade Kawasaki, the President and CEO of Legendary Companies (formerly of the Coker Group), it was a reality.

Thrust into the world of wheels at a young age, Wade’s automotive journey began in the most innocent of ways, pumping gas and servicing vehicles at his family’s Southern California service station. From there Wade went onto work for an automotive parts company and when he noticed that a fair number of customers were coming in from outside of the United States he decided to go out on his own and, with the help of his wife, opened their very own automotive parts export business. That led him to SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) and a chance meeting with one of their Vice Presidents and from there, let’s just say his career flourished.

This is a great episode with one of the leading individuals in the automotive space today, so go grab a beverage, a workbench or something to tinker with and join us for a great conversation with Mr. Wade Kawasaki.

Muscle cars are fascinating machines, aren’t they? They’re romanticized, sought after, and coveted by their owners to a point that most people will never understand. From a manufacturing standpoint the formula was simple. Pull a mid-sized car from your line-up, stuff the biggest and baddest engines in your arsenal under the hood, and then sell them to the public for a reasonable price.

Some of the most desirable were the Mopar B-Bodies produced from 1966-1974. Chargers, Coronets, Satellites, Road Runners, Belvederes and the GTX are all examples of how Ma-Mopar tried to take over the muscle car world. And with a host of big and small blocks, as well as transmissions, combined with some of the best styling to ever come out of Detroit, it’s no wonder that both the owners and public alike still look upon them with wonder. On this episode of the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ Podcast, the crew (who also happen to be owners) talk about why Mopar B-Bodies have stood the test of time and are still a favorite amongst collectors.

Over a decade ago, Larry Kosilla of Ammo NYC single-handedly reimagined what the automotive detailing industry could be by focusing on consumer education through video. His educational approach and passion are unequaled from what we’ve seen, which is why it’s not surprising that so many have tried to follow in his footsteps.

His YouTube channel, with its 1.8-million subscribers, has become the gold standard in DIY detailing techniques, and his easy going and honest commentary keeps people coming back for more. This week on the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ Podcast we talk automotive sale preparation, what tell-tale signs to look for when evaluating a vehicle for purchase, along with the latest used car market trends.

So put on those headphones and turn up those speakers because this is a great show that you’ll not want to miss!

If you follow the used Porsche market, then you’re aware that the public perception would have you believe that the turtle shaped cars from Stuttgart are made of gold. But what if we told you there are still some bargains out there. Cars that mere mortals like us can afford.

Would you be surprised, flummoxed even?

Fact is, there are several P-Cars floating around that are not only affordable but waiting for you to pick up, stash in your garage or take on a killer road trip (we’d recommend the latter). On this episode of the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ podcast, we dive into some affordable Porsche 911s, a few of the transaxle cars, and maybe even some of the brands mid-engine screamers that are just prime for the taking!

So, grab a frosty beverage, or a nice cup of joe and sit back as we discuss which used Porsche may be right for you.

It’s been an icon for almost 60-years and has what is arguably the most well know name in the automotive kingdom. We speak of course about the Ford Mustang, a car that’s American as baseball and apple pie. What started out in the mid-1960s as a little mild-mannered coupe, eventually morphed into one of the greatest automobiles the world has ever known. There was a time however in the early 2000’s when Ford almost killed off the Mustang, and with that, an automotive legend.

Then, in 2005, something wonderful happened. The blue oval released the S197 Mustang - a retro styled throwback to the original fastbacks that grabbed our imaginations in magazines and movies for almost six decades. On this episode of the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ Podcast, host Mike Musto and Rob Einaudi, Hemmings Director of Marketing and Business Development, sit down and talk about the S197 as it’s a car they’ve both owned and enjoyed!

Growing up, I lived for the middle of the month as I knew it was when my magazines were coming in. Hemmings, HOT ROD, Car & Driver, Rod & Custom - you name it, and I had a subscription. As a kid I would flip through the pages and memorize every spec and statistic, and then, once the knowledge had been sucked in like a sponge, I’d go back through and study the photographs for days. Chargers, Mustangs, Porsche 911s and Ferrari’s all adorned my school lockers when I was a kid, and the photographs were so perfect that they told an entire story in one shot.

Capturing these iconic images doesn’t just happen though. For photographers it takes years of experience, craft refinement and patience, and even then, there are no guarantees. But then you meet someone like Michael Alan Ross, see his photos and then begin to understand how his visions help him become one of the best automotive photographers in the business.

This week on the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ podcast, Michael joins us to talk about this career, and how there is so much more to taking that perfect photo then most will ever understand.

We all have those friends that we call when our heart tells us to buy something, but our wallets and brains have other plans. They act as our voices of reason and our automotive conscience to an extent, and if you’re a petrol-head like most of us, then odds are you have a contact list full of these kind of compatriots. One of my goals in life is to drive and experience as many cars as I can before I die and thus far, I’m doing pretty good. Helping me on this journey is our own Hemmings Director of Marketing and Business Development, Rob Einaudi. He’s been a close buddy of mine for around 15 years and is a trusted guide when it comes to putting something new in the garage. On this week’s episode of the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ Podcast, we welcome Rob to talk about our past car buying experiences, as well as car buying in general. We then talk used cars, our top buying picks for between $2,500-$5,000, and talk about how, regardless of your budget, that there’s always something good on the used car market!

You may not know it, but I can guarantee you’ve seen some of Steve Strope's creations. He’s been in the pages of Hemmings Muscle Machines, in HOT ROD, Car Craft (may it rest in peace) along with countless others and his vehicles have even been a staple in the Fast and Furious film franchise since the second installment. His designs don’t follow trends, but instead, set them. He’ll also never build the same car twice. Steve Strope of Pure Vision Design in Simi Valley, California is one of those rare builders who can take an already beautiful design and improve upon it to the point where you go, “Dammit! That’s the way it should’ve come from the factory.” From the 1965 T5-R Martini Mustang to the Novaro Nova he crafted for Joe Rogan, to one of his earliest creations, the flame red 1972 Plymouth Satellite dubbed “GTX-R”, Steve has an aesthetic that few can match. This week on the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ we talk with Steve Strope about how he started, where his inspiration comes from, and how his next creation may be just a little bit different than anything he’s done before.

Artist, fabricator, welder, tradesman, and educator - that would be a very broad description of Josh Welton, this week’s guest on the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ Podcast. As advocate for the trades, Josh and wife Darla created the Still Building America Project through their company Brown Dog Welding, whose mission is to bring awareness to the trades that helped build America - something that we so desperately need. When not advocating for the trades though, his time is spent at General Dynamics Land Systems where he is a fabricator, mechanic, and driver.

The passion portion of his life comes in the form of some of the coolest metal sculptures you’re ever likely to see. From cars and motorcycles to stunning figurines, not only do his creations tell a story, but they also have the ability to take your mind on a journey that’s only limited by your imagination. Before we sit down with Josh though, we pull a one-of-a-kind 1946 Dodge Power Wagon 6x6 from our classifieds, as it’s something we though Josh himself would truly love.

Hitting the open road for an all-out adventure is one of the great joys in the life of any gearhead. Hitting the open road when filming a new series for Hemmings while taking one of your dear friends along for the ride, well that’s something else entirely. Yet that’s what happen in early April when I teamed up with automotive journalist, host, and author Elana Scherr on a 3,500 plus mile road trip in a completely untested 1981 Chevrolet Suburban for Road to Improvement, an upcoming program that’s set to launch on the Hemming YouTube channel later this year.

For the guy who founded the Jalopy Journal and its message board, the H.A.M.B. – the most influential organization for the traditional hot rod movement in the history of the universe, you’d be shocked by how under-the-online-radar Ryan Cochran flies. Unless you actually know Ryan.

Ryan doesn’t like crowds, but he’s assembled the largest crowd of hot rods and customs on the planet. Ryan’s not much for self-promotion, but more hotrodders know his work than all the – ahem – builders building anything on reality television, combined. Ryan doesn’t spend a lot of time advertising his brand, The Jalopy Journal, but its H.A.M.B. is one of the most active message boards in the industry. In the words of the great poet, Walter Sobchack; “Ryan doesn’t roll on Shabbos.”

So, you can imagine how stoked we were when he agreed to come over and hang out for an afternoon at the Hot Rod BBQ. Full disclosure: we’ve been honored to call Ryan a friend for more than 20 years, so there’s that. But don’t let it color your opinion of our opinion. The guy has done more to support the hot rod and custom movement than just about any magazine, car show or online video. And he’s done it all from a place of pure enthusiasm for and love of the culture.

It’s rare that Ryan grants an interview like this, so grab a stool over there by the bench: we just put some brisket on the grill from Franklin’s that Ryan brought with him from Austin and we’re gonna talk story. And then, if you’re not a member yet, head over to https://www.jalopyjournal.com/ and dig in!

Remember NASCAR? Yeah, neither do we. Stock car racing used to be the flag we’d fly as kids and there were plenty of fist fights on the playground over drivers, cars, and even the tobacco brand or the beer loyalties. And, depending on where you’re from, that might even still hold true for local dirt track heroes: did you enlist in the Slammin’ Sammy army or are you in the Kinser camp? Look, we all need heroes and NASCAR seemed to have forgotten that.

And then, along came a young, Lebanese-American woman to the sport. Came up through kart racing as a kid. Set the record for most USAC wins by a female (19) on her way up the motorsport ladder. Smart. Media-savvy. And from California, no less. Suddenly, the opposite of everything we expected from this sport we once identified ourselves by, was coming true. And Toni Breidinger bundled it all up in a budding cult of personality that we’re fully digging.

Come on over to BBQ this week and hang out with Toni. She’s fairly freakin’ amazing and turning everything you thought you knew about a stock car driver inside-out. The Skoal Car? Nope—the Huda Beauty Chevy. Pulled pork on the grille in the pits? Not for Toni – she’s vegan. But she did leave everything she knew in Silicon Valley and move to the heart of it all, Charlotte, NC, to pursue her NASCAR career. She’s that serious.

Far as we’re concerned, this young, new driver has a standing invitation to the Hot Rod BBQ. The door’s always open, Toni. Just bring along a couple extra bags of pita chips – we’re still getting used to those vegan hot links...

You got that one hot rod buddy who’s done all the cool stuff and gone all the great places and uncovers all the goodies all the time and has the greatest job ever? If you’re lucky, you know exactly what we’re talking about and life is so much more interesting because of that one friend.

In our world, that one guy is our Man About Town, Bobby Green of Old Crow Speed Shop!

While it’s true that Bobby has built some of our favorite period-correct hot rods out of Old Crow (and got the one and only Chris “Coop” Cooper to do the Old Crow Speed Shop logo), he’s also a partner in 1933 Group – the crew that brought Los Angeles the return of the historic Idle Hour and bars like Oldfield’s (as in Barney Oldfield), as well as the restoration of the Formosa Café and the Tail ‘O The Pup. He’s got a Japanese apparel brand, a few hot rods in a Tommy Hilfiger ad campaign, and a tamale restaurant that looks like a giant pipe-smoking dog from the Petersen Museum. If it’s vintage hot rod-inspired and it’s cool, Bobby either owns it, found it, or knows about it.

So, roll up your pant legs and set up camp on the edge of the pool, over there: we’ll bring the drinks over and wait for Bobby to get here – you’ll wanna hear this!

What do you get the guy who has everything? Better question: what do you ask the guy who’s done everything? What if you’re hanging out at a barbecue with that guy who’s rocking the super-rare Jordans and brought that one bottle of single-cask bourbon you’ve only heard about and showed up in the right-hand drive Skyline you saw that one video of? Well, if that guy shows up, make sure you supply yourself with an hour’s worth of pulled pork and get comfortable.

And it’s with that in mind that we bring a very special guest to the Hot Rod BBQ; RJ DeVera!

RJ is the guy who’s done just about everything on a bucket list that we could come up with. He was there in the early days of the tuner scene, making it one of the most influential genres of the last few generations. He’s designed his own wheels. He’s consulted on genre-defining movies like the Fast & Furious franchise. He knows beautiful people. He’s worked in automotive publishing and hosted a show on MTV. And he's the Global Customer Engagement Leader at your favorite car care brand, Meguiar’s. If we didn’t love him so much, we’d hate him.

So, grab a seat over there by the fire pit and bring your hoodie with you: we’ve got a great chat on the Hot Rod BBQ with the one and only RJ DeVera – and this could go all night.

Every once in a while, we’re fortunate enough to check a few names off our interview bucket list. This week, we’re gettin’ BBQ (metaphorically, alas) with our favorite chambray-clad gearhead, the one and only Jay Leno! Jay needs no introduction. If you’ve had a television set plugged in at all over the last 30 years, you know the man. And, if you’re a collector car nut, you’d know that denim shirt and silver hair peering over car show entries across this great land of ours, anywhere. Not to mention six glorious years, and counting, of Jay Leno’s Garage. Now, we’ve had the great fortune to visit Jay and his legendary car collection in Burbank, CA a few times. And it’s not lost on us that Jay’s been a fan of Hemmings longer than a Pinkberry line’s worth of Zennial lifetimes strung together. So, when we really stop and think about it, shame on us for not calling up Jay sooner and inviting you over for the hilarity that ensues. Grab shop stool over there by the giant, antique industrial pulley set into the floor of Jay’s shop and hang out for another weekly HOT ROD BBQ. Hey, you never know who’s gonna show up…

Ever wonder who gets to work on movies like Cars? Who’s behind the scenes of your favorite car shows? Who’s partially responsible for designing the most car-nerd amusement park ever built? Have you ever caught yourself daydreaming about the most epic job a gearhead could ever have and then wonder if such a thing actually exists?

Come on over to the Hot Rod BBQ, grab a plate and hang out with us and Jay Ward.

Jay’s the guy behind some of best things in car culture over the last twenty years. He’s the Creative Director at Disney/Pixar for everything Cars, traveling the world and doing all the magical car-guy stuff we can only dream about. But, he’s also half the team who brought the groundbreaking “Billetproof” event to life and changed the way we do car shows. He’s a motorcycle guy who cut his teeth at the parts counter of one of the oldest Harley dealerships in the world. He’s an illustrator. A raconteur. A hotrodder. A Pebble Beach concours judge. A budding indie movie producer. Basically, Jay is living his – and our – best car life.

So, glad you showed up: crack yourself a cold one, the hot dog relish is over there by the pretzels, pull up a lawn chair and kick it with us for an hour on the ‘Q.

The name of Jeff Snyder's shop isn't just a description of the automotive rebirth he and his team performs. It's also an homage to the funeral home his grandfather and father ran. And while there's not much overlap between rebuilding cars and caring for the dearly departed, Jeff credits the family business for the mindset that helped him create award-winning work. "I think part of it is the attention to detail I learned in the funeral business,'" he said in a 2010 interview with Hemmings.

On this episode of the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ, Mike Musto pick's Jeff's Brain about how he started in the restoration business and how he approaches the challenge of rebuilding some of the rarest and finest automobiles (and motorcycles) ever produced to a concours-winning standard. From his first toe-dip into automotive repair - starting with the rusty Chevy Van he drove in high school - Jeff recounts when his hobby turned into a business and goes all the way into the modern day, explaining tricks such as how to make urethane paint mimic the lacquer look of older cars. It's a fascinating peek into the excruciating level of detail that goes into a high-end restoration and, like every episode of the HRBBQ it's centered around a love of cars. #hemmings

Would you believe that Jon Chase, the Art Director over at Hoonigan, started his career at an industrial rubber company? Some of the best and most notable people in the automotive world started in careers that had nothing to do with automobiles. But then things changed. After landing a job as a junior designer for Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker at his company Famous Stars and Straps, he then went onto work at Maisto (that really cool company that makes diecast cars) to make more cool stuff, while at the same time starting his own clothing company called DSTROYR. The world of drifting was next where Jon designed product for the likes of Chris Forsberg and Vaughn Gittin Jr. After that he met Brian Scotto from Hoonigan, and the rest, at least for now anyway, is history (and of course we’re simplifying that).

This week on the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ we’d like to welcome Jon Chase as he takes us through his journey of art and design. We’ve also pulled a beautiful 1957 Chevrolet Nomad resto-mod from our classified for the simple reason that we thought Jon would dig it. Enjoy!

Like so many of us, Terry Wilson’s relationship with cars started with diecasts. It was love at first sight and thanks to an uncle who was a huge car enthusiast, that love would evolve into Terry spending summers working under cars in his uncle’s garage. And by age ten, Terry found himself playing with some of today’s most highly sought-after vehicles on the back roads of South Carolina. Throughout high school and into his adult life, he continued to work on and eventually built some impressive muscle cars. Then, in 1997, a call came in from a friend who worked at a Chevrolet dealership about the then new, LS powered Camaro Z/28. Back then the LS series of engines was brand new from General Motors, yet Terry knew the platform would be perfect for aftermarket applications.

Thus, after a few conversations, Terry put his money where his mouth was and built one of the first LS powered 6-speed 1969 Camaros in the Tri-state area. He then turned his attention to his 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle and while working on it some of his car buddies asked him to document the build. With requests building, the Coverman66 YouTube channel was born. Once up, Terry began getting comments and positive feedback from people around the globe asking for guidance with their own LS projects. Today with over 200 YouTube and Instagram videos and millions of views worldwide, Terry Wilson has cemented himself as one of the leading DIY personalities in the LS swap community.

In honor of Terry, we’ve also pulled a wonderful 1969 Chevrolet Camaro X22 SS from our classifieds for everyone to drool over.

For almost two decades Jarod DeAnda has been adding swagger to the world of Formula Drift with his booming voice, professionalism and unparalleled personality. As a street racer in the mid-1990’s, he was there at the inception of the import scene in Southern California which lent itself as the inspiration for The Fast & Furious movie franchise. Then, after taking a variety of industry jobs, in 2004, Jarod had the opportunity to become an announcer for a then new automotive series called Formula Drift, and the rest as they say, is history.

On this episode of the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ we dive into the pre-commercialized SoCal street racing scene and learn about how Drifting as sport infiltrated the United States to become one of the biggest automotive genres in existence. We then touch on how live events have changed in the time of the Covid-19 pandemic and if how, and when, normalcy will return to the automotive world.

Pick an industry, any industry, then sit down and try and figure out how to revolutionize it. Think about the idea behind it, the hours, months and years you’d have to put in, and then about how all that hard work could possibly end up in failure.

Could you do it? Could you work 100+ hours per week only to “maybe” succeed in five, ten or fifteen years down the line?

Larry Kosilla of AMMO NYC took that chance and, in the process, reimagined what the automotive detailing industry could be by focusing on consumer education through video. His no-nonsense approach and passion have become unequaled in the industry which is why it’s not surprising that so many have tried to follow in his footsteps. This week on the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ Podcast, Larry walks us through his philosophy on car care, business and where his drive to become one of the best automotive detailers in the world came from.

This is a great show that you’ll not want to miss!

There you are, a fourteen-year old kid, sitting at home. Then one day your father walks into the room and asks you if want to take a little ride across the continental United States with some of his buddies in a late 1970s Dodge van. For most kids, a ride like this might have consisted of stopping here and there to see the sights and then maybe, visit some relatives. If, however your name began with Brock and ended with Yates, then that train of thought is about as far from reality as you’d expect. Brock Yates Jr. grew up with the Cannonball Run, that famed cross country event that later became what is known as today as, The One Lap of America. His father, famed automotive journalist, racer and script writer Brock Yates, created the Cannonball Run and thus, it was no surprise that his son somewhat followed in his footsteps.

As the Chief Comandante of The One Lap of America and an instructor for DrivingDyamics.com, a leader in driver training and safety, Brock has forgotten more about driving then most of us will ever know. He’s also an amazing story teller and one hell of a good human being. Thus, it was a no-brainer for us to have him as a guest on this week’s Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ. We also pull a wicked 1972 DeTomaso Pantera from our classifieds as we felt it would be a fitting entry for upcoming 2021 One Lap of America.

If you’re looking for automotive truth, regardless of the medium, then look no further than Jason Cammisa. His award-winning two-decade career has earned him Senior and Technical Editor positions at several major U.S. car magazines, millions of YouTube views, and a large and fervent social media following. His reviews aren’t opinion pieces; but instead, they’re framed around deep technical knowledge, which he then regurgitates to his audience in plain English—with an equal dose of comedy for good measure – something that you’ll soon see more of as he’s now creating content for Hagerty’s media division.

As a rabid enthusiast and collector, and one of the few who actually drive their vehicles at a fevered pace, Jason’s tastes lean towards eclectic European (however that doesn’t mean we’re not trying to get a muscle car in his garage). He’s honest, funny, and with a no BS attitude towards well, everything, he’s also a hoot to follow on social media.

Join us this week on the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ as we welcome Jason to talk cars and what it takes to be an automotive journalist. We also pull an oh-so-perfect 1975 Chevrolet G-10 “Boogie Van” from our own Hemmings classifieds!

Kevin Wesley has been into cars since he was a kid. Inspired mostly by watching his father working on projects, his introduction to road racing began with his brother’s SVO Mustang in the early 90’s. His passion really took off in 1993 while working with Mopar Action Magazine where he was invited to participate in their Vintage American 1969 Plymouth Valiant at The One Lap of America.

In those following 25+ years, Kevin has pushed himself to contest numerous forms of automotive competition. He has competed in road races, endurance races, drag racing, Time Attack events, hill climbs, stage rally, autocross, TSD rally, and even ice races. Having found success in many events throughout his motorsports career, Kevin currently holds multiple Time Attack track records, a hill climb record at Mt. Washington and most recently finished 3rd in class at the prestigious Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

Wesley Motorsports was formalized in 2015 with Kevin recognizing his need for an organized approach to motorsports competition that combined driving skill, team organization, and promotion. As a driver, it’s about winning, there is nothing else. As a brand, Wesley Motorsports puts forth a professional effort that is respected by fellow competitors, sponsors and the fans.

Join us this week as we welcome Kevin to the Hot Rod BBQ to talk about his racing career, what it’s like to drive a very big car up a very big hill, but then, before the convo even starts, we look at a very interesting 1972 Jensen Interceptor that we pulled from the Hemmings Classifieds.

Jonny Smith of The Late Brake Show on YouTube has done quite a bit in his automotive career. From co-hosting the UK automotive program Fifth Gear, to Mud Sweat and Gears on BBC America, to writing for such publications as Car Magazine and Classic Car, Jonny has seemingly done it all. As an enthusiast of electric vehicles, Jonny also built and held the record for the worlds quickest electric car in a highly modified 1974 Enfield E8000 that was dubbed “Jonny’s Flux Capacitor”.

But make no mistake, this man doesn’t live on electricity alone, as a wickedly cool 1968 Dodge Charger complete with a 383 cubic inch big-block and 4-speed also resides in his garage. On this week’s Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ, we pull an obscure 1987 Owosso Pulse Litestar from our classifieds and then talk to Jonny about his career, his new show and the future of automobiles.

Raised in Atlanta, Georgia by a family of automotive enthusiasts, Ron Baugh’s automotive obsession began when he uttered his first word, “FRUCK” while pointing to a passing big rig. Automotive magazines littered his home and by age four Ron was already trying to convince his grandfather to trade his old pickup in for a new one so he could customize it. That attention to detail led him on a path that would see him customize every vehicle he’s owned over the last 25 years. In fact, if you spot him in a totally stock car, you can bet it’s a rental. As a student at the USC School of Architecture in Los Angeles, Ron became entrenched in the custom car scene, which eventually swayed his interest away from architecture and into a career in the automotive aftermarket.

“I harassed a local custom wheel manufacturer for weeks until they agreed to hire me as a paid intern. I learned the wheel industry top to bottom there, serving as a stock hand, driver, design/marketing assistant and sales representative.”

Ron fell in love with the wheel industry and over the next 18 years, his creative abilities helped him adapt and excel at product design, development and marketing. His career and talent also allowed him to collaborate with some of the most respected car builders in the world, along with countless athletes, artists, celebrities, as well as the everyday enthusiast. As a trusted member of the automotive community, Ron’s dedication to style and creativity has influenced more enthusiasts then we dare to count.

This week on The Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ we talk wheel design, automotive trends, and what it takes to make it in the wheel industry. We also take a look at a vintage (and by that we mean 1980s) Mustang GT ragtop that we pulled from our very own Hemmings classifieds.

A lifestyle automotive brand, Petrolicious has carved out a unique niche for itself by providing its audience with some of the best automotive videos on the internet. From beautiful barn find Fords, to some of the most eclectic and exotic automobiles the world has ever seen, Petrolicious had done a great job of curating the best machines on the planet. And everything was going great, until the former owner made some untasteful remarks online. After the incident, fans of the brand thought it was done, until that is, Pat Devereux, a long time creative in the automotive world, came in, grabbed the reins and decided to take the brand in a new direction.

Last seen almost 25-years ago, the Ford Bronco is arguably one of the most iconic nameplates in the automotive world. First introduced in 1965 for the 1966 model year, it was touted as the go anywhere and over anything alternative to just about everything that was on the road. It was small, attractive and rugged and gave enthusiasts their first taste of an adventuresome outdoor lifestyle. And while it was as basic as basic gets, that didn’t stop Ford from selling over 225,000 units of the first-gen Bronco’s that were made from 1965-1977.

The 2nd Generation Bronco showed up in 1978 and lasted for just two years. It was amajor departure from the 1st Gen trucks as it was a full-size 4x4 that was based on Ford’s F-series pickup trucks. That basic size and shape would last for another 18-years and through 4 more generations of Bronco, up until the nameplate was discontinued in 1996.

Fast forward to July 13th, 2020 during the Covid lockdown, when Ford unveiled the all-new 6th Generation to the world with an online presentation. Thus far, we’ve seenfootage, but no true online reviews or in-depth insider information. That is, until now.

This week on the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ we welcome Mark Grueber, U.S. Consumer Marketing Manager for Ford and leader of the Bronco Underground. Mark talks to us about the new 2021 Ford Bronco, and tells the story of why it took almost 25-years to ressurect one of the coolest off-roaders ever produced by an OEM!

Take one 1949 Ford F1 pickup truck. Add a full-tube race chassis, a raced prepped Cummins diesel with compound turbochargers, and an insane builder/racer named Scotty Birdsall. Do that, and maybe, just maybe, you too could set a world record at the Pikes Peak Hill Climb and in the process best one of the oldest, and most well-respected automakers the world has ever seen.

Scott Birdsall of Chuckles Garage in Santa Rosa, California created “Old Smokey” out of a farm truck which he purchased for a mere $250.00. Initially slated to be a parts hauler for his shop, the old F1 quickly escalated into one of the coolest diesel-powered vehicles ever created.

Old Smokey however isn’t Scotty’s first foray into the world of mechanized awesomeness though. Some may remember Strange Bird, the 1962 Ford Falcon Gasser that was powered by a supercharged 401 Buick Nailhead. Or Brutus, the BMY Harsco M931A2 6x6 5-ton tractor. Either way it doesn’t much matter as this week on the Hot Rod BBQ, we’ve got him, and he’s here to tell us not only about his new world record, but how he got into this business, how he loathes the corporate world, and what’s next in his pursuit of flat-out speed.

We’ve also got a wicked 1965 Volvo P1800 racer that we pulled from the Hemmings classifieds in honor of our special guest because, it looks like something he’d get a kick out of!
