Growing up in the country, there was nothing like spending the entire summer day outside. Riding bikes, shooting baskets, playing catch, hide and seek, taking a walk through the woods. There was something about being a kid and coming into the house at night time just being filthy - I’m sure my mom wasn’t too fond of that, but that was what our summers were filled with. The one thing that I didn’t like about coming inside from being in the woods…picking off those awful burrs from a burdock plant that glue to you like a spot weld, and no matter how much you shake them off or try to pry them off, it comes down to you just grabbing them with your bare hands and ripping them off your clothes, one by one…then trying to figure out how to get them off your hands once you’ve picked them off your clothes! But there’s got to be a silver lining here right? I mean, sure, let’s dig deep and find the silver lining like the man who looked at these burrs under the microscope and came up with a pretty brilliant idea. Let’s enjoy a good cup of coffee, and a great episode of the Missing Chapter.

Who doesn’t love a good riddle? This episode’s introduction will be a riddle… so listen carefully, have an answer ready, and we’ll unveil the solution after the coffee pour. Ready? Here we go….
An elderly woman sits in her rocking chair knitting, positioned in front of a window, so that she may watch the trains passing by, the warm sun hitting her face and the cool autumn breeze blowing over her. It’s 1914 and Europe is engulfed in war. She is knitting a large blanket. She knits rhythmically, the blanket stretched out before her. As each train pauses at the station in front of her, passengers peer out their windows, and watch her work. It’s a generational scene, a woman carefully partaking in the lifelong custom passed down to her by her mother and her mother before her. One male passenger, in particular, watches her closely and takes down some notes on a pad of paper. Several seconds pass, before he frantically jumps to his feet, grabs his pad and coat and scurries off of the train… just before a group of German soldiers board and inspect the train. Seemingly the man has just avoided being discovered by enemy combatants. So… the question is, how exactly did he know that German soldiers would soon be boarding. How was he warned to get off the train?

I can’t stand when people misuse the word “literally” - Some people have said, it’s literally raining cats and dogs - what??? No it’s not literally raining cats and dogs because if it were literally raining cats and dogs then I would physically see cats and dogs coming from the sky at terminal velocity, but I don’t see that, why? Because it’s a figure of speech, it ISN’T literal.And now, I’m about to use the word literal in it’s most accurate form. There was an inventor that had an idea for the 5th wheel - a literal 5th wheel - not in the figurative sense in which you go to dinner with 2 couples and feel like a 5th wheel, but an actual 5th wheel - on a car. What? For what reason??? Well, that’s the beauty of this story.

Well today, on this episode of the Missing Chapter, we are featuring Richard Graziano, a member of the Army Reserve for over 20 years, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Colonel prior to his retirement. Richard joins us today, to honor Memorial day by talking about the history of a forgotten story - the Four Chaplains. And apart from all of the tech issues we’ve had, we found a way to get around some of the audio issues to make sure this episode aired for Memorial day.
So we apologize for maybe a lower audio quality than you may be used to from us, but we at least wanted to honor this weekend.

The eastern front of World War II brought with it some of the most brutal, unimaginable fighting the world had ever seen. Conditions for both soldiers and civilians alike was “kill or be killed;” the tide of the war was at stake and the fate of the world hung in the balance. In amongst the rubble and the chaos that was Stalingrad, opposing snipers became a crucial factor in this struggle. One Soviet sniper, in particular, had destructive consequences on their German opposition and, in the process, began to pave a new course for females. A path that would eventually lead her to the lawn of the White House in Washington, D.C.
This is the story of one woman and the profound impact she had, not only on the Second World War, but the battle for gender equality and the struggle for women’s rights.

I think everyone would agree with me when I say that we’d all like to be better stewards of our money. Maybe we didn’t need that $6.00 latte this past Monday, Tuesday, and uh Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. I mean, my goodness, that’s $30 a week in caffeinated beverages, who would ever do that? Certainly, not your caffeine-addicted, coffee aficionados known as the Phils. But in all honesty, just like anything in life, a little over a lot of time, adds up to a lot. Someone resisting the latte every week can save upwards of $1,500! My goodness, what would that equate to if you invested that in a long-term portfolio earning compounded interest? That’s a nice little retirement right there. But what if you could get that kind of 30 year investment, say in 2 or 3 year turnaround? Wow, that kind of investment, does that even exist? His conquests rewrote the history books, as well as the maps of continents. He was feared throughout Europe and his tactics would redefine military strategies for decades to come. Napoleon Bonaparte rose to power out of the French Revolution and the period of upheaval that saw French royalty overthrow, as well as beheaded. Nothing stood in his way, except… four-legged furry animals, renowned for their cuteness. Historians will tell you that Napoleon’s greatest miscalculations came when he invaded the frozen tundra of Russia, when in reality, his greatest defeat and most humiliating loss happened early at the hands or rather ‘paws’ of one of nature’s sweetest creatures.

Not many people would recognize the name or photograph of actress Margaret Hamilton, but just about everyone knows the famous movie role she played, and the subsequent lines she delivered. Bedecked in green make-up and a black pointed hat, this pleasant face transformed into the Wicked Witch of the West in MGM’s version of 1939 classic - The Wizard of Oz.

You know how the game goes - Start with everyone along the starting line, when you say 'Green Light' everyone will move towards the finish line, when you say 'Red Light' everyone must immediately stop. If players are still moving when you call 'Red Light', they must go back to the starting line. And if you’re thinking about playing this game in a real life scenario, it probably goes something like this - You’re in a real hurry and hope that every intersection is cleared of traffic and a glowing green light is awaiting for you to pass through unobstructed, and every red light magically and hurriedly changes its tone so you don’t even have to take your foot off the gas while crowds of people await for your royal highness to pass through the intersection. And let’s not even get started about the yellow light - which, in modern day traffic, has changed it’s purpose from being a warning for slowing down to a welcoming for flooring it and speeding up. But here’s the question - why do we use those three colors? Have they always meant the same thing? That’s what we’re here for - to answer the questions you may not have even asked yourself, and to do so in Missing Chapter fashion. Hollywood’s depiction of pirates, swashbucklers, and buccaneers is often glamorized and fictionalized to the point, where it’s difficult to differentiate between villain and hero. The history and reality of pirates is often much more obvious, but no less thrilling and entertaining.

Well, here we are in the snow-covered hills of upstate NY. It’s a balmy 14 out this morning, my windshield was covered with an impenetrable microscopic ice, which is somehow impervious to a massive steel and plastic ice scraper, I almost took a header coming down my steps from said ice, and I still can’t feel my hands from pumping gas this morning with a chill that seems like it came from Arendelle castle. What I envision now that gives me solace…watching fireworks on the 4th of July after a beautiful summer day spent outside barbecuing with burgers and…dogs. The hot dog. It’s a summer and baseball staple in our country. It’s a stadium tradition, it’s a barbecue necessity, and it’s a cornerstone of our culture, good or bad I guess. But there is some controversy surrounding this questionable meat…who stakes claim to making the first hot dog? Well, that’s up for debate, and I’m excited to have that discussion with my good friend here Phil Horender, on this episode of the Missing Chapter.

From relatives to neighbors, family to strangers, what other response is so commonly known around the world than what happens following someone’s sneeze. God bless you gesundheit, blesh you, salud - whatever your response, this is something so commonly used that it spans across continents, religions, ethnicities, and cultures - how is that possible? And better yet, how is it that so many people across the world use this response yet if I had asked anyone who used that response, “hey, may I ask you, why do we say God bless you after someone sneezes” I honestly don’t know if someone would know the true origins of it. I thought I did, until I realized what I thought was surrounded in sheer myth. If any of our listeners have flown before, you’ve probably noticed two schools of flying patrons - those that love it and spend their time casually reading their favorite book or appear to have the best slumber of their lives, and those that have to take a valium washed down with a swig of vino to get their heart rates back to normal pumping levels. Me, personally, I fall somewhere in the middle. I love flying, but when the bottom of your belly falls out from turbulence, I immediately wish I had taken that valium. Anytime someone like the latter group gets a little anxious about the trip, and the fact that you’re 30,000 feet in the air without a parachute, going around 500 mph, it always helps to have the calming voice of the pilot, or the easy, calming nature of the flight attendant. And that right there, is the focus of today’s episode. The flight attendant: an airline’s idea to calm its passengers has become not only a common occurrence, but a requirement for all flights. Holiday traditions are in the details… Whether it be the specific way you decorate the Christmas tree, the precise angle the wreath is hung on the door, the Christmas card that gets mailed to friends and family has to be perfect. Undoubtedly, a large portion of the holiday season gets spent on… gifts. Finding gifts, buying gifts, and wrapping gifts.
Decades ago, most gift givers would cover packages with brown shipping paper or newspaper, even fabric. The brown shipping was usually what the post office would accept when those packages were shipped to that special someone. The latter, fabric, was also preferred, but could be rather pricey. Fast forward to 2023, the gift wrap industry in the United States is a nearly $3 billion market, in part, because of some quick thinking by a Kansas City, Missouri entrepreneur a century ago.

Boy it sure seems like technology is really taking off lately huh? I say that in the most literal sense because now you can go to your local Target or Wal-Mart and buy a toy that uses technology that was unthinkable only a few decades ago. To think when I was a kid that I would be able to take a remote control and manipulate a toy helicopter high into the air, and even watch the flight once it comes back down…no way, that’s the thing for sci-fi movies, not real life. Well, here we are, and now my own kids have drones with AI that fly themselves and just by holding their hand to the side, below, and above, their 3” diameter drone can stay in flight for as long as the battery can stay at a constant charge. To kids, that’s normalcy, to adults, that is ludicrous! New technology, amazing, right? Here’s the problem, it may new to us, but it certainly isn’t new to the world. In fact, it’s old news, because the Nazis were using drones in 1944. Yup, you heard me right. Welcome to the Missing Chapter Podcast everyone, let’s get to it.

A superstition, according to Oxford Dictionary, is a widely held but unjustified belief in supernatural causation leading to certain consequences of an action or event, or a practice based on such a belief. Wow, that’s a mouthful. In essence, it’s something that we do out of habit, or maybe out of fear of bad luck. Don’t step on a crack or you’ll break your mothers back. You just spilled the salt. Quick, throw a pinch over your right shoulder. Hey, hold your breath, we’re going past a cemetery. Knock on wood, this is going to be a good episode! The man was a grudge-holder and today… he was already fuming. The smell of smog, the oppressive heat & humidity, the unmerciful rush hour traffic. The overwhelming tidal wave of sidewalk commuters pushing and bumping into him as he left his office for the day. He was exhausted, frustrated, and simply put…wanted to be home. Standing on the street curb, he waved frantically at the handsome cabs that raced by him. The city’s archaic system of horse-drawn carriages was dirty, noisy, ineffective and only compounded the man’s anger. Chances are that if you apply for a job as a secretary you possess certain skills. Things like: multi-tasking, taking phone calls, and… typing. Bette Graham Nesmith, however, was not a good typist when she accepted her position as executive secretary at the Texas Bank and Trust in 1956. And yes, the job description included extensive typing, especially in this day and age before computers and even word processors. Using a basic, simple typewriter in 1956 one mistake (a wrong letter, a grammatical error, a punctuation slip) could require starting the entire document all over again.

Just when you think you’ve heard it all, you stumble upon a story that makes you say, no way, come on, really? Has this ever happened to you? Well it just happened to me - and let me tell you, it’s bizarre. Upon researching and studying our country’s origins, I came across a very, uh, peculiar, strange, and I don’t know, puzzling founding father. Of all the framers of the Constitution, there is one that stands out. And oddly, you probably have never either heard his name before, or know his completely eccentric life, but I’m almost certain that you know the phrase that he coined. We the people of the United States - there it is, one of the most famous quotes of our past, present, and future. History iis full of people who set out with grand ambitions – lofty goals of fortune and fame. Others came across these shared desires by chance and their success reached heights even they could never have anticipated.
A simple mid-western boy graduated from Purdue University in 1928, with a degree in soil management & crop production. Upon his graduation, he began working as a county agricultural agent, and managed a 12,000-acre farm.
The same question perplexed this young farmer that every farmer starting out had to answer: What should I grow?
Somewhere along the way, he decided on breeding a new variety of… corn. In the process of growing his corn crops and expanding his fields, this young man partnered with a friend named, Charlie Bowman. Together they spent decades crossbreeding more than 30,000 corn hybrids. Finally, in 1965, the duo settled on what they considered to be the “perfect kernel.”

Memorialized in song by the late Gordon Lightfoot, the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald in 1975 is considered one of the worst maritime disasters in history and the worst that the Great Lakes has ever seen. A grizzled sea captain, a boat that boasted to be one of the largest of its kind, and a crew of some 28 sailors set out on Lake Superior on a grey, windy November day. They departed Wisconsin on a voyage that would find them sailing into the history books, folk legend, and lore.

At the end of the American Revolution, the newly formed U.S. Congress was deep in debt. During that time, in order to settle debts, many states ended up selling some land to compensate. In 1784, the province of North Carolina chose to do just that. They voted to give away 29 million acres of land. So what would they do with all that land? Why wouldn't they just dig their roots deep into North Carolinian culture? Well, there's more to that - as well as their attempt behind creating an entirely new state. Would it work? One of the most fulfilling aspects of teaching is seeing a student begin to recognize their gift and begin to fulfill their purpose. From students that are historians through and through and want to pursue teaching, to mechanically-minded individuals that love working on cars and plan on being successful auto mechanics and technicians, to art students that have their artwork being bought from outside sources, it’s an honor to see and fulfilling as a teacher to watch their students’ gifts take shape before our very eyes. For some people, it takes a lot of trial and error to tease out their gift, whereas for others, their purpose is recognized early on. Well, an individual born in Ireland in the mid-18th century not only found his gift, but built upon it continually and eventually utilized it so much that one of his creations is one of the most recognizable objects in the world, and I’m guessing no one even knows his name. His gift might be hiding in plain sight, but after today’s episode, his name surely won’t be hidden any longer. Welcome to the Missing Chapter, everyone, let’s get to it.

In May of 1905, a 26-year old clerk in Bern, Switzerland was on his nightly commute home from work. As was his usual routine, he boarded the trolley and made himself comfortable for the relaxing ride home. The clerk found himself deep in thought and engrossed in a nagging question that he had been unable to solve for years. The trolley navigated its way through the center of town and past Bern’s famous clock tower – known as the Zytglogge or “time bell.” It had been constructed in the 1200s as part of the medieval city’s west gate. The actual clock itself dates from the 1400s and had dominated the Swiss city’s primary square since then. At that moment, as the trolley passed by the clock, and the tired clerk’s eyes fell on the clock tower, the answer to the question that had vexed him for years, suddenly came to him and the world would change – forever. You know, some of the greatest discoveries and inventions came from someone who started with a question. How do we solve this problem? What would happen if we mixed this with that? How can we make this part of life easier for ordinary people? Many times, it’s just sheer curiosity that becomes the vehicle for discovery. Now, in the 1960s, I think it’s safe to say that amidst the cold war, the united states was developing and testing some pretty dangerous inventions. Sure, would there be positive outcomes, of course, however, getting through the initial series of trial and error could be at the expense of human life. So the question at hand on any invention or discovery is, is it worth it? You’ve probably heard this before, but what makes ordinary people do extraordinary things? Does extraordinary require an intrinsic or extrinsic motivator? Is it something that is hidden within someone and is only activated when it is absolutely necessary? Is it based on survival, doing whatever it takes to continue to live? Or is it based on the love of another person, or correcting an injustice, or simply for a social, political, religious cause? It’s hard to say, and honestly, if you’re looking for answers to those questions, unfortunately, I don’t think this episode will provide that, however, what we can do is provide an example of an extraordinary hero, an unsung hero, and all this person had to do was air her dirty laundry. Wait, what does dirty laundry have to do with being a hero? Well, hopefully this episode of the Missing Chapter will educate and motivate, and show our listeners that something as simple as airing your dirty laundry, in the most literal sense mind you, can actually be used as a tool for a cause greater than the courageous person carrying out the act. The story of America and the struggles our country endured in its early years, is the story of its people. If we are to learn from history and appreciate the stories and grow from our early ancestors, its necessary to hear the accounts of what they endured.
In many ways, Mary Jemison’s birth and start in the New World with her family, represented the birth of new colonies and a new democratic nation. She faced unimaginable hardships and endured amazing hindrances early on, but ultimately persevered and found happiness with a Native American tribe in Upstate New York.

In the fall of 1743 (33 years before the birth of the United States of America), somewhere on the stormy, turbulent Atlantic Ocean, a child was born. Thomas and Jane Jemison were blessed with a beautiful baby girl, while aboard the ship, William & Mary. She would be named Mary and Mary would embark on a separate journey… a voyage, in and of itself, that commenced as soon as their vessel docked in Philadelphia and the Jemison family stepped foot in the New World.

The 2nd book of Genesis describes what life was like before sin entered the world. No sin…so no evil, no disease, no shame, no guilt, no poverty, no famine, no tension and hostility between humans and animals or humans and God Himself for that matter. Then of course, the perfect Garden of Eden, and humanity thereafter, became tainted, diseased with the entangling pains of sin when Eve ate the forbidden fruit. Adam, influenced by Eve, and Eve, tempted and deceived by Satan the serpent, now have set the course of humanity and the environment as a whole. Sin has entered and the Garden of Eden is no more.
As depressing as the story goes, there’s an even better redemption story comes later, but that’s for another episode. Today, though, humanity is still dealing with the weight of sin and the brokenness of the world. Sometimes we get a glimpse of the Garden of Eden, partaking in flourishing feasts and almost gluttonous holiday celebrations, whereas, unfortunately, we see the evidence of the fall of man in the famines that plague a vast portion of the planet.
So what kind of plans can we as a human race conjure up to prevent famine and increase food production to compete with the vast rise in global population? Well, for this episode of the Missing Chapter, we're going to focus on a "GLOWING" idea to increase food production...and let me say, it's probably not what you'd expect.

The complicated relationship that existed between the United States and its Soviet advisory, Joseph Stalin, was one that changed with almost every shift in the global climate of the 1930s and 1940s. From defending the eastern front from Adolf Hitler’s advances in World War II to the negotiating table of the Paris Peace Conference, few leaders from history have had a more divisive legacy in our nation’s past than Stalin, himself. The dictator that most historians accredit with killing more than 20 million people is the same leader whose forces altered the course of war with his unwavering defense of the Russian city of Stalingrad. By 1947, however, with the ushering in of the Cold War, it was undeniable that Joseph Stalin was the primary communist opponent that the United States government had to concern itself with. Therefore, upon his death in 1953, U.S. foreign policy makers waited with baited breath on who his successor would be and what this would mean for the American people.

Oh if these walls could talk - how many times have you heard that? Well, how would you react if I told you that the office walls of a certain US ambassador were talking - to spying KGB members outside the US embassy in Moscow. Now wait a second, how could this have happened? And isn’t this the sort of stuff we see on Bond films and sci-fi movies? That kind of stuff doesn’t really happen right? In the days following September 2, 1945, there were few labels more abhorrent than that of ‘Nazi.’ As the events of the Holocaust and Adolf Hitler’s genocide against Europe’s Jewish community and other groups and minorities came to light, anyone associated with the Nazi’s or anyone linked to their repulsive deeds were put on trial and held accountable for their actions. SS officers and Nazi officials scattered throughout Europe in a frantic race to escape prosecution. They assumed false identities and took refuge in the few countries that sympathized with their ideologies and whose extradition laws kept them safe. Subsequently, in the years after World War II, Nazi hunters like the famed Simon Wiesenthal would scour the ends of the earth trying to find these criminals and bring them to justice.
For some 1,600 German, Nazi elite - scientists, engineers - however, one government in particular recruited them… welcomed them, embraced them after 1945. They didn’t have to hide their entities. The resumes they built during WWII is what set them apart from their colleagues. This country and the project they were being chosen for… might surprise you. What lengths were countries willing to go to during the height of the Cold War, under the threat of the Nuclear Age, when they willingly signed… A Deal with the Devil.

Any historian or history buff will tell you, there are certain people throughout history that used their gift of leadership for great things. Some, on the other hand, have used this gift for well, not so great things. The shadowy figure emerged from the staircase onto the roof of the hospital – the tallest building in Tokyo at the time. The series of lies and bluffs that he had used to this point had, in fact, worked gaining him access to the spot in the city skyline he would need to complete his mission.
From beneath his kimono, he drew a small movie camera and began to pan the view before him, albeit draped under the cover of night. This included the harbor and the industrial district of Tokyo – which was comprised of munitions plants and military factories. After several minutes of filming and picture taking, the man puts the camera back under his kimono, retreats from the roof, and quietly makes his way back down the stairs – as if he had never even been there. It was late and in less than 24 hours, he would be taking the field with his teammates in front of thousands of adoring fans.

Happy April Fool's Day, everyone! Some of us are doing what most people do on April 1st...nothing really out of the ordinary - while others, however, are using today’s date and continued tradition as an excuse to pull some of the most ridiculous, albeit clever pranks on everyone from family, friends, grandparents, teachers, classmates…no one is off limits on April 1st because hey, that’s what we do on April fools day because it’s not only just allowed, it’s encouraged!

Sung an estimated 10 million times each year, and recorded an estimated 7,000 times by various artists and churches, Amazing Grace is one of the most popular songs in history. It has brought people to tears, myself included, it has inspired thousands to overcome adversity, it has motivated civil rights activists and encouraged those suffering from injustice and hatred, and has become a rallying cry for Christians throughout the world that it’s only by the grace of God that we’ve overcome anything our lives hand out. Many of us know the song, but I would guess that only a select few know the history of the song and its unbelievably fascinating and inspiring origins. From sinful ways to singing hymns of gratitude, the focus of today’s episode is not only on the magnitude of the song, but the power behind the saving grace of God and the redemption story so widely known throughout the world, and the author of the song was no exception. The year is 1947, Jackie Gleason is seated at a bar having a drink. Next to him, his good friend and fellow entertainment icon… Frank Sinatra. Gleason motions to the bartender. “Have you tried Jack Daniel’s?” he asks his rat pack associate. Sinatra shakes his head no and tries it that night, for the very first time. His introduction to the Tennessee distilled whiskey, in many ways, will be the country’s introduction – to the liquor and the brand. For years after this night, Sinatra would drink Jack Daniel’s on stage, where he would often refer to it as “the nectar of the gods and the best booze in the world.” And… it becomes what it is today – a major, multinational corporation.
Frank Sinatra played an integral role in helping make Jack Daniel’s a household name, synonymous with whiskey, the world over. A name that is not renowned, not well-known, not associated with the drink, however, is Nathan “Nearest” Green and to properly understand the company, the business, the empire that developed, that is Jack Daniel’s, it’s imperative that you know his story and the impact he had on the brand. The Bank of England is one of the oldest financial institutions in the world, tasked with maintaining monetary stability in the United Kingdom. Since 1734 it has occupied a 3.4-acre site in London’s Threadneedle Street, where the iconic building conceals eight subterranean vaults filled with precious gold.
The bank prides itself on having never been robbed at any point in its 329-year history. However, it is rumored that the bank’s defenses were actually breached in the 19th century when a citizen of London was able to successfully gain access… to the main gold vault. According to the bank’s website, this incredible discovery was the source of considerable embarrassment to its esteemed, Victorian directors.

From the time I picked up my first basketball to the time I took off my uniform and sneakers for the last time, I dreamt of one thing - cutting down the nets. The symbolism and emotion involved in that moment is just as the title suggests - it’s the dream! Any basketball player knows what I’m talking about. As my dad has always said, there’s only one team that ends their season with a win, and that’s the Champion. My sisters were fortunate enough to experience this twice - winning 2 state and federation championships in their career back to back. It means you are at the pinnacle, a cut above the rest, and all of your hard work, dedication, practice, and obstacles overcome paid off. You are officially a champion. And what does every winning team do at the end of the championship game? Cut down the nets.
Now, personally, I cut down a net once, but it wasn’t a championship game, and I didn’t do it with a pair of scissors, but I’ll fill you in on that later. It was a dark night, October 10th, 1809, when an unassuming man stopped at a small, modest log cabin lodging house known as Grinder’s Stand. Differing versions of that night have this particular man arriving with several other associates – others, alone. Traveling to Washington, D.C., this mysterious individual had financial matters to settle and, by many accounts, reasons to be guarded and cautious. He rented a room for the night and retired to bed. Later that evening, the innkeeper’s wife, Mrs. Grinder, was startled by several gunshots and the horrifying emergence of her new guest, severely wounded and crawling on the floor, begging for water. Mortified by this ghastly site, she froze, too afraid to help and instead, the man was found dead at daybreak.
Whew! Now if that sounds more like the beginning chapter to a mystery novel or a scary movie than it does a history-based podcast… you’re right! But after you hear the rest of the story, including the mystery man’s identity, the fate of his body, and the controversy that still simmers today… you’ll realize it’s another exciting episode of The Missing Chapter Podcast – Mystery Edition! The U.S. Civil War is one of the most intriguing, impactful events in not only our nation’s history, but consequently world history. Within these 4 years, one single occurrence could have altered the outcome of the struggle and ultimately the fate of the Union.
In September of 1862, the war was still young and both sides were experiencing moral-lifting victories and crushing defeats. Confederate general Robert E. Lee had the reputation as an accomplished, formidable advisory to the Union forces and was living up to this status. He seized the initiative in the early fall and began advancing north for a possible all-out invasion. It was a pivotal time in the war. If Lee could score a decisive victory, European nations, such as England or France, might recognize the Confederacy, and the war for all intents and purposes – would be over. The South would be a triumphant independent nation and President Abraham Lincoln’s dream of a unified country would be lost.

I think it’s safe to assume that all of our listeners at some point have experienced the social contagion that is so memorable, you may even get a physical reaction to the thought of it - the cringy awkwardness of one of the facets of the early pre-teen and teenage years - the middle school dance. The music is blasting, the lights are flashing, to a completely void, lonely, and awkward dance floor. Who makes the first move? Who asks someone to dance? Who breaks the ice and just goes for it in the middle of the dance floor? This is a tug of war that middle schoolers experience the first half hour of every middle school dance to ever exist, anywhere in the world. Ok, that may be hyperbole, but you know what isn’t exaggerated? The history of the U.S. space program is the story of American pioneers; brave men and women who boldly went where no one before them had gone. Has anyone ever seen the Christmas classic, The Santa Clause? It’s one of our family’s favorite go-to movies during the Christmas season and one of the parts of the movie that gets my kids to giggle every time is the part where Tim Allen is interrogated and asked, very firmly I might add, what his name is. The interrogator is looking for him to say Scot Calvin, but his response instead…Kris Kringle, Sinterklass, Pere Noel, Babbo Natale, Pierse Nicole, Topo Gigio…which, by the way, is an Italian mouse, but that’s not the point. The focus of today’s episode is not on the many names of Santa, but the big question mark around the first name of his wife, Mrs. Claus. What is her first name? Does she have a first name? I’m sure you’ve seen the movies, whether sci-fi or action, that encompass the power of nature. Immediately, I think of the hit movie Twister and its scary depiction of how powerful tornadoes can be, or some other cinematic examples like the movie Armageddon, 2012, Dante’s Peak. All extreme examples of natural disasters, but nonetheless terrifying. And because of my affinity for these movies, I vividly remember in 2011, waking up and turning on the news as I’m getting ready for the day and wondering why the news was playing a sci-fi movie, showing a powerful tidal wave swallowing towns whole - the problem was, it wasn’t a movie, it was real video footage of one of the worst tsunamis on record to hit Japan. It was absolutely horrifying. Now, that real tidal wave was certainly different than the Hollywood versions, but what I never imagined as I watched in terror was what this episode is all about. You see, today we’re focused not just on the power of the disaster, but how that power could be used…what am I referring to? Stick with us and find out on this episode of the Missing Chapter.

As a parent, a trip to the beach on a hot, summer day can be exactly what the family needs to complete the perfect vacation. However, as a diligent father, you always have to be aware of possible dangers – even on a remote, sandy beach reminiscent of a pristine paradise getaway. Crashing waves, strong undertows; did we apply enough sunscreen? Why is that one scene from ‘Jaws’ continually running through my mind… I know, I’m paranoid, but again that’s the job of a parent, right?
Most likely, a scenario, that isn’t a fear of mine or on my radar, is the possibility that a Cold War-era nuclear bomb is sitting, quietly on the bottom of the ocean floor just off the coast of the beach we’re enjoying. That would be something right out of a science-fiction movie, right? Surely that would never and could never happen; I mean our government would deactivate or remove entirely a weapon of that magnitude that would put the entire eastern-seaboard of the United States at risk. America’s pastime - I can vividly remember my first time ever going to a big league baseball game - my family drove through the insanity also known as Bronx traffic and made our way to a random parking garage. As we paced our way through the enormous line, we start to approach this enormous stadium that looked more like a castle to my young self than a baseball arena. The words Yankee Stadium were larger than life and we made our way inside. Once inside, the most fond and vivid memory, is walking up the old concrete walkway to get into the stadium. The walls narrowing the closer I get to the opening and the only thing I can see is the famous façade sitting atop the walls of the old Yankee Stadium. The sound of the crowd, the smell of the hot dogs, the crack of the wooden bats, and the feeling you may topple over as you walk down the steps to the medal folded seats.
Now, we could hold an entire course on baseball history, but there’s one facet of the game that I honestly didn’t know the history of. Something specific to the scorecard. Grab your coffees, turn up the volume - this is the Missing Chapter.

I ask myself the same question every morning when I wake up and every afternoon I drive home. Our sons inquire about it when I pull in the drive way and my wife requests an answer when I walk in the house.
“What’s for dinner?”
The answer to this question can be an easy one or one that causes me to wrack my brain. It all depends on whether or not one of us has gone grocery shopping.
Ahh! The magical world of food. Today we often take it for granted – a luxury at times. Going to the grocery store and having a seemingly endless array of foods to choose from. Or a chore other times. Having to find the time to make a list, locate every item on it, and wait in line to pay.
Regardless… the food we eat, the way it’s packaged, the manner in which it’s processed, and how it makes its way from field and farm to grocery store and market, all the way to our dining room tables at night – are often overlooked and might just astound you, amaze you. Surely without this technology our lives would change drastically. On this episode of The Missing Chapter, we delve into one of my favorite topics – food! In our 21st century model of advertising and brand recognition, everyone has a logo. Logos represent what the business, enterprise, or team is all about. We almost take them for granted actually, because we’re exposed to logos everywhere we look! The United States Civil War ended on April 9th, 1865. The Confederate States were officially dissolved, U.S. territorial integrity had been preserved, the institution of slavery abolished and the beginning of the Reconstruction Era was ushered in. In the subsequent years, the country would see the passage and ratification of the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments to the Constitution of the United States. Major political, economic, and social changes for a nation that had just witnessed the death of nearly 620,000 of its sons, brothers, husbands, and fathers. But the question remains for historians and the debate continues today… Did the lives of former slaves really change all that dramatically? We know that racism and discrimination remained in the United States for decades to come and that financial freedom was virtually unobtainable for many liberated slaves looking to start new lives. But for some, the end of the Civil War and the years that followed, ushered in remarkable, unimaginable opportunity and for one young, African American girl, whose parents had been slaves, and who was now living in Oklahoma, it would mean that in a few shorts years she would be one of the wealthiest people in the entire country and that today her story would be recounted on this episode of The Missing Chapter.

In the history of film and cinema, no animal has ever been awarded the distinction of an Academy Award. Which is too bad because Hollywood has produced countless movies starring a variety of animal stars. Before the advent of Amazon Prime delivery, UPS, and FedEx, the US Postal System was the only option. It was a luxury and a necessity at the same time - a way to send information and a means by which supplies could be distributed throughout the nation. As a matter of fact, did you know the US Postal Service processes over 160 million pieces of first class mail daily? It's hard to fathom! What's even more astounding though, that in the mid-19th Century, a package was delivered with a very heavy, fragile, and unexpected contents inside. It wasn't an ordinary delivery, and it isn't a typical day at the post office - it's a tale only history can conjure up - and it's today's second episode of Season 3!

A disturbing trend existed in the mid-19th century when it came to maternity clinics and child birth. New mothers were dying in alarming numbers due to a mysterious ailment referred to at the time as, “childbed fever.”
A Hungarian doctor named Ignaz Semmelweis, who was working in a Vienna, Austria maternity, who began to notice and question this shocking trend in 1847. As he delved deeper into the statistics on maternity fatalities, he began to raise questions on medical practices that had been accepted for decades.

You may be familiar with the 1874 Jules Verne book, Journey to the Center of the Earth, and its 2008 theatrical sibling. For those of you who may not be familiar with the plot, the title I think is pretty self explanatory, but the story involves the characters discovering and decoding ancient writings that show a dormant volcano leading to caverns inside the earth. The couple ran, hand-in-hand, to the nearest bicycle shop; nervous, frantic, and desperate with the looming armies advancing in the past days. The radios had announced hours earlier that the city would not be defended from the approaching Nazi forces. The couple didn’t have a car; none of the trains were running; two million Parisians had already fled. Hans and Margret tried out the tandem bike for sale but realized that they couldn’t manage. Instead, the anxious pair resorted to buying spare bicycle parts, which cost them as much as they had been paying for a month’s lodging at a respectable hotel—the manic inflation reflective of the exodus at hand. Hans somehow constructed two separate bicycles that night, from the hodgepodge of pieces they had purchased the day prior. Early the next morning, under the cover of still dark skies, the couple departed the city, with the explosion of mortar shells audible in the distance. They carried with them some food rations, a little clothing… and the manuscript for a children’s book.
This is the story about a story… and a couple, whose harrowing tale of survival in the face of grave evil, would help give the world one of its most beloved characters.

From an early age, Theodore Alvin Hall, had shown an astonishing mind for mathematics and physics. In 1940, Hall had scored some of the highest marks ever on the entrance examination at Columbia University. Due to extenuating circumstances, however, he was not allowed to enroll. Hall was not deterred. He went on to attend Queen’s College in New York and would transfer 2 years later to Harvard, where his professors were so impressed with his grades, he was allowed to bypass the first year of his course.
While at Harvard, Hall immersed himself in relativity and quantum mechanics and even received a special scholarship for his groundbreaking work. He became the star pupil of Professor John Van Vleck, one of America’s leading experts in quantum theory.
By 1942, Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany were expanding throughout mainland Europe will relative ease and unbeknownst to Hall, Van Vleck had been secretly recruited by the U.S. government to help with the most sensitive undertaking in the country’s history; a project so important, the future of the free world hung in the balance. Van Vleck would look to ultimately sway the momentum of the war in favor of the Allied forces by adding his star pupil to his team, while at the time, Theodore Alvin Hall was only 18 years old.

Lyndhurst, New Jersey, formerly known as Kingsland, is a township of about 22,000 people in the Meadowlands. It’s what some would consider a nice, ordinary Jersey community. However, what many might not know about Lyndhurst is that it was not only home to about 22,000 people, it housed the Canadian Car and Foundry Plant, which would be used as a fairly large munitions factory. The plane jarred violently as it climbed into the gray February night sky, but the 95 passengers onboard were not dismayed. After being grounded an additional 3 hours for severe weather, some were already asleep, and all were excited to be leaving snowy and icy New York on their way to beautiful, sunny Miami, Florida on February 1st, 1957.
Northeast Airlines Flight 823 had taxied off the runway at LaGuardia Airport less than a minute earlier and was beginning its ascent with captain Alvin Marsh at the controls and co-pilot Basil Dixwell by his side. The stewardesses had not yet had the chance to offer beverages from the drink cart, and the ice and wind was pelting the south-bound flight, when Dixwell suddenly screamed, “Al, ground coming up!” But it was too late. Flight 823, wavered like a bird with a crippled wing, before crashing violently into a patch of trees. Less than 60 seconds after taking off, it lay, with both wings ripped off and on fire, on a small plot of land just south of the airport. That parcel of land – was Rikers Island – home to one of the most notorious prisons in the country. This gripping story is our focus on this Missing Chapter Short.

It's 1930 in Banks Mississippi, Robert Johnson walks into a juke joint where two of the most popular blues guitarists of the day, Son House and Willie Brown, were playing a show for a packed house. He had not been seen in almost a year and asked Son House if he could sit in his chair and play a few songs. Son responded saying, “Alright, but you sit in that chair, you better do something with it.” Son House had heard Robert play before and had not been impressed by what he thought of as Robert’s mediocre talent. Robert, a young man who was already a widower at age 19 strode up onto the stage and sat down with his guitar. The audience had no idea what was going on, but what happened next started one of the most famous legends in Mississippi Delta Blues history and would have a profound impact on music for the next 80+ years. Surrounded in mystery, there are only three known pictures of him and 29 recorded songs. Sadly, only 8 years after that performance he would become the inaugural member of the macabre 27 club. It was on October 22, 1962, that former president JFK told the world that the Soviets were building secret missile bases in Cuba, about 90 miles off the coast of Florida. And not only did he make claims to that, he had photographic evidence to prove it. The Americans and Soviets began the nose-to-nose confrontation over these bases stationed in Cuba. Elections throughout history, have been periods defined by hotly contested debates, where emotions are high and, in some cases, threaten to boil over. In 1934, one year after Adolf Hitler was named chancellor of Germany, Adolf Eichmann was assigned to the Jewish portion of the "security services" of the SS. He worked closely with Hitler in the development, planning, and implementation of the Nazi "final solution" operation. The Nazi Holocaust conducted during World War II resulted in the mass murder of 11 million Jews, minorities, and political opponents, and remains to this day, one of the worst civil rights abuses and acts of genocide in modern history. In 1950, Adolf Eichmann, under a false identity and forged paperwork, was able to flee Europe and escape persecution. Dr. Joseph Bell, a Scottish surgeon and lecturer, had an uncanny ability to “read” people based on their wardrobes, body language, and simple surveillance and examination. This gift went well beyond a doctor’s usual skill to observe. Bell was able to determine what patients did for a living, or what illness they might be suffering from, simply by glancing in their direction or by watching them for mere seconds. In 1940, after Germany invaded Norway, a 22 year-old named Jan Baalsrud, escaped into Sweden where he would be trained in espionage by British officials. He acted as a courier between Stockholm, Sweden and Oslo, Norway, but was caught by Swedish authorities, tried and convicted of espionage. He served 3 months of a 5-month sentence and was then expelled from the country. His journey over the next 6 months took him all around the world beginning in Russia, through Bulgaria, Egypt, India, South Africa, United States, Newfoundland, and finally England. There, he would be trained by the British army in special operations. The objective would be to disrupt the Germans and provide a place for the Allies to get a foothold in Scandinavia in an effort to liberate Norway. That was the easy part of his journey. The next chapter of his story would last 9 weeks and cover 80 miles but would test him to the very limits human endurance and threaten the lives and families of anyone who came into contact with him. Just over a century ago, a young boy was born into a modest family, in the small eastern Montana community of Miles City. If you were to take a walk in lower Manhattan, in New York City's bustling financial district, between the intersection of Wall Street and Broad Street, they may not notice something peculiar in the side of one of the city's most prominent buildings. Ranging in size from small, missing chunks of limestone to deeper, baseball-size pits, the J.P. Morgan building's stone façade is scarred with pock marks - a constant reminder of one of the city's, and country's, greatest terrorist attacks of the 20th century. But this wasn't the result of shrapnel from the 9/11 attacks that gripped our nation in 2001. This was damage inflicted from an oft forgotten attack earlier on, in September of 1920 - one in which the J.P. In 1955 in Montgomery, Alabama, a black woman gets on a bus, sits down, and is eventually told by the bus driver to give up her seat for a white person. She calmly refuses to surrender her seat but then was forcefully removed from the bus and eventually arrested. It was her act of civil disobedience that sparked legal action which led to the end of Alabama's segregated bus laws and empowered a widespread civil rights movement to gain momentum. That brave young woman is none other than Rosa Parks, right? Well, sort of... 9 months prior to the Rosa Parks bus ride, in the same city, on the same bus system, with the same laws, and with the same type of forced exodus and arrest, a 15-year old girl did the same thing. Don McLean memorialized February 3rd, 1959 in his epic, 8-minute history-lesson as “the day the music died.” The classic 1972 single is referencing the plane crash that killed musicians Buddy Holly, J.P. Richardson (better known by his performing name, the Big Bopper), and Ritchie Valens, along with the plane’s pilot, Roger Petersen. One member of Holly’s band who did not make the flight went on to become a trailblazer in the country music genre, as one of the original “outlaws” of the music scene.

Franz Ferdinand, heir presumptive to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, was mortally shot by a young Serbian nationalist, Gavrilo Princip. When Princip pulled the trigger, he would unknowingly convict 20 million soldiers and civilians, many of them young men like himself, to their deaths. World War I was called "the war to end all wars", triggered by this lone assassination, would give way to some of history's most costly battles, heroic endeavors, and long lasting technological inventions. U.S. General Edward King, commander of all American armed forces on Bataan Peninsula in 1942, told his men, “We have no further means of organized resistance, we are low on ammunition, have virtually no medical supplies, and our food is all but gone. The situation has become hopeless. You did not surrender; I ordered you to surrender.” 78,000 U.S. and Filipino soldiers were put at the mercy of their Japanese Imperial captors, including former Notre Dame fullback, Mario “Motts” Tonelli. 5-years prior, Tonelli’s 70-yard rush in the USC game had helped preserve a win for the Fighting Irish and Tonelli’s spot in the history books. Now, he was part of the grueling 60+ mile Bataan Death March, and trying to navigate the hellish conditions his captors were subjecting him to. Holding on to the thoughts and memories of his family and his home, Tonelli would rely on every ounce of his experience and training as a collegiate athlete, to not win a football game, but to survive. When it comes to college football, no other program in the country conjures up the history and the mystique that the University of Notre Dame does. Outlined against a blue-grey October sky, the Golden Dome in South Bend has preserved the legacies of football royalty. In November 1937, arch rival Southern Cal and Notre Dame were tied at 6 in the waning moments of the 4th quarter when a young, backup fullback wearing #58, took the handoff on a reverse and ran 70 yards to the USC 13-yard line. Two plays later, that same fullback would score standing up, and secure the win for the Irish. However, unbeknownst to him, his 70-yard run that gave his football team a victory, would save his life...5 years later.

Almost every tragedy in history has a hero - whose unwavering bravery and courage, in the face of disaster, helped save lives and provide hope. When famed ocean liner, Titanic, hit an iceberg on the night of April 15, 1912 and began its descent into a watery grave, it took with it 1,523 souls. But because of the heroics and sacrifice of some on board, there were others who made their way to safety, survived, and went on to live their lives. Twenty-five year old, Jack Phillips, was among those who traded their life, so that others might live that fateful night. Phillips' call to service had prepared him for this and his "call" that night saved 705 people.

Many families traveling to the sun-drenched ocean town of Long Beach, California in the summer of 1977, would take a day trip and visit the Nu-Pike Amusement Park; picture Coney Island on the West Coast. With its vintage rides, shows, games and attractions and located on the beautiful breeze-swept beach, Nu-Pike was a favorite amongst locals, as much as it was with out-of-town tourists. But in the summer of 1977, amongst all of the sun and fun, not everything was what it appeared to be, even with all of the intentional illusions and deceptions. Imagine: You walk off of the Long Beach Boardwalk and into an amusement parlor. The operator instructs you to carefully step down into the ride car. The lighting is so dim, that seeing what is around you, much less where you are stepping is challenging. You take a seat and the attendant slides the arm-bar down over your lap, with an audible ‘click.’ The car lurches forward and into the brightly colored, black-lit door welcoming you into Nu-Park’s House of Horrors.

It's May 5th, 1945. Adolf Hitler has just committed suicide five days prior. Chief of Operations Officer Alfred Jodl and Field Marshall Vilhelm Keital will order the unconditional surrender of all German armed forces two days from now. It will be on this day, however, that the strangest battle of World War II will unfold. Under the ashes of Stalingrad, Kursk, Normandy, and the innumerable battlefields of Europe, the vision of the Third Reich has now perished. Millions of German soldiers paid the ultimate price and now millions more are left to defend their own cities, towns, and families. Striving to retain their honor and dignity at all costs, they were forced to battle their own elite fighting force; the Waffen-SS.
