The 2016 Sika Show will be held on

Dave Shaw has over a decade of experience in TV production gained from both home and abroad. With just a handful of hunting trips under his belt, he’d be the first to admit that he doesn’t possess the hunters instinct just yet, although his combination of a BSc in Zoology & years spent in Officer training for the NZ military means he brings a different set of skills to the table. On top of this, Dave also cut his teeth working on the groundbreaking Discovery Channel series FutureWeapons, so he certainly knows how to shoot action!
Prior to starting up The Hunters Club, Dave was the lead camera operator and head of post production on the ITM Fishing Show, which rates as one of NZ’s most watched shows in any genre. It was through the show that Dave crossed paths with Dan, and from there they decided that it was high time someone set out to show the general public exactly what makes hunting in New Zealand so very special.

This week stephen talks to Rio Olympics 2016 Shooter Natalie Rooney about how she won her silver in women's trap, find out what shoot gun she used to win a silver medal.
Rooney is from Timaru in South Canterbury, and attended Craighead Diocesan School The New Zealand Shooting Federation nominated her for the country's sole quota spot at the 2012 Summer Olympics, but Ryan Taylor appealed the decision to the New Zealand Sports Tribunal and was sent instead. She competed in the women's trap event at the 2016 Summer Olympics and won the silver medal, with gold going to Australia's Catherine Skinner. She was only the second New Zealand sports shooter to win an Olympic medal, the first being Ian Ballinger who won bronze in the small-bore rifle at the 1968 Summer Olympics. *From Wikipedia

The New Zealand Mountain Safety Council (MSC) is a national organisation with a mandate to encourage safe participation in land-based outdoor activities. It does this through the development and promotion of safety messaging, by identifying and responding to insights provided by the ongoing collection and analysis of data, and by building partnerships with relevant organisations.
Kaylyn McBrearty talkes about her PhD on white-tailed deer in Paradise, Queenstown, New Zealand.
The purpose of this research is to endow the Game Animal Council (GAC) with knowledge on the Whakatipu white-tailed deer so that the herd may be designated as ‘of special interest’ and sustainably managed to improve herd health and performance for the continuation and improvement of New Zealand hunting resources.
Information on herd dynamics will give the GAC a basic foundation to understanding the herd. However, in order for a management strategy to be designed which improves the herd, the GAC must know factors which currently or historically have limited it.
As such, the proposed research aims to determine if the following factors are limiting on the health, performance or habitat range of the Whakatipu white-tailed deer herd and attempt to quantify the impact each has on herd success.
This research is to be conducted for the fulfilment of a PhD by Kaylyn McBrearty at Lincoln University, Department of Ecology and Life sciences, advised by Landcare Research Ecologists. Research is currently conducted in collaboration with the Game Animal Council, the New Zealand Deer Stalkers Association, the Department of Conservation, Safari Club International and Wakatipu locals.

History
Ceska zbrojovka Uhersky Brod dates back to 1936, when it was established as a branch plant of Ceska zbrojovka located in town of Strakonice, based on a political decision of the National Defence Council. On 2 January 1937 production of a combined range of military and civilian arms commenced. The first products were aircraft machine guns, military pistols and smallbore rifles. During the Nazi occupation period the plant was forced to produce and repair military arms.
From 1945 the plant returned to the combined range of military and civilian arms, with an equal share of time going into the production of each. In 1950 the Company became a separate state enterprise called “Presne strojirenstvi Uhersky Brod” (The Precision Machine Tooling Company) and was subsequently reorganized into a number of specialized directorates.
In the 1970s and 1980s the Company was merged with the concern Agrozet Brno, where it engaged in it’s traditional production of arms while also taking over and launching the production of reduction gears and driveshaft casings for aircraft engines for Motorlet Praha and hydraulic powered and controlled attachments for tractors for Zetor Brno.

Bryan Baker, Master Cutler started his knife making business from necessity in 1983. Made redundant by the untimely demise of an engineering firm, the 18 year old decided to turn a hobby into a practical business.
The early SVORD Knives were forged individually and therefore expensive. Bryan Baker had to rethink his production methods and pricing to secure a share of the New Zealand sports market. A chance meeting with an elderly Czechoslovak knife maker gave Bryan Baker's business a real boost for this master craftsman was able to pass on to Baker many cutlers secrets and knife know-how.
Especially important was the unique hardening and tempering process which gave Bryan Baker's knives a special edge of strength and durability.
Baker immediately set about to build his own hardening and tempering plant using his newly acquired skills and knowledge. Today, every SVORD Knife is treated and tempered on the premises. The combination of quality Swedish cutlery steel and Baker's process for heat treating and tempering produces a truly superb blade.

Paul trained as an apprentice tool & die maker with the view to becoming a gunsmith. However, because of the poor income in this field, he decided not to go into this industry. Instead, he travelled extensively overseas. On his return to New Zealand he spent four years with the Forest Service as a professional wild animal control hunter, then went into sales, to gain experience in this field before setting up his own business, (New Zealand Ammunition Co Ltd), in 1983. Paul continues to be a keen hunter and was an Executive Member of the New Zealand Deerstalker’s Association.
Paul is a Foundation Member of ‘COLFO’ (The New Zealand Council of Licensed Firearm’s Owners’) - a group set up to represent the collective interests of New Zealand firearms owners in maintaining a sensible balance of safeguards for the community while ensuring the responsible use of licensed firearms.

Who is Rabbit Ranger
They are people who have come together because of a mutual love of hunting and being in the outdoors. Rabbit Ranger was the creation of Christian aka "Christo", who realised one day that he just wasn't happy with his job and the way he was heading, like a mouse in a wheel, going round and round and round, he felt that work was taking up 40-50 hours a week, reducing the time he had with his family and overall, making him a sad and grumpy bloke. So what happened?
Although he won't say he had an epiphany, he kind of did one day when he was out rabbit hunting, sat in camo, amongst the gorse and blackberry, it suddenly dawned on him that he was happy, that rabbits were delicious (see the recipes at the bottom of the page) and people were missing out on eating a resource that in turn was damaging the outdoors he loved. People used to eat them on a regular basis, what happened and how do we change that? With all the damage they do, eating them could only be a good thing!
This week Professor Alexander Gillespie and Stephen talk 'GUN LAWS IN NEW ZEALAND'
Professor Alexander Gillespie obtained his LLB and LLM degrees with Honours from The University of Auckland. He did his PhD at Nottingham and post-doctoral studies at Colombia University in New York City. His areas of scholarship pertain to international and comparative environmental law; the laws of war; and a number of pressing issues of social concern such as drug policy; and refugees.
Alexander has published sixteen books. The latest works have been Waste Policy: International Regulation, Comparitive and Contextual Perspectives. (Edward Elgar, London, 2015); International Environmental Law, Policy and Ethics. (OUP, Second edition, 2015); and the Causes of War: 1000-1600 (Volume II, Bloomsbury, NYC, 2015). He has also written over forty academic articles.
Alexander has been awarded a Rotary International Scholarship, Fulbright Fellowship, Rockerfeller Fellowship, and the the New Zealand Law Foundation International Research Fellowship. Alexander has also been the lawyer/expert on a number of international delegations and advised the New Zealand government on multiple matters of international concern. Professor Gillespie was the first New Zealander to be named Rapporteur for the World Heritage Convention, involving international environmental diplomacy under the auspice of UNESCO. Alexander has also been engaged in policy formation for the United Nations, the Commonwealth Secretariat, and governmental, commercial and non-governmental organisations in New Zealand, Australia, United States, United Kingdom, Ireland and Switzerland.

Dave Shaw has over a decade of experience in TV production gained from both home and abroad. With just a handful of hunting trips under his belt, he’d be the first to admit that he doesn’t possess the hunters instinct just yet, although his combination of a BSc in Zoology & years spent in Officer training for the NZ military means he brings a different set of skills to the table. On top of this, Dave also cut his teeth working on the groundbreaking Discovery Channel series FutureWeapons, so he certainly knows how to shoot action!
Prior to starting up The Hunters Club, Dave was the lead camera operator and head of post production on the ITM Fishing Show, which rates as one of NZ’s most watched shows in any genre. This weeks interview is with Bill Davis from DHNZCT he tells us how they assist disabled men and women, who had in the past or now have the desire to hunt both small and large game or to fish lake, sea or river by providing the tools and locations to find the hunter inside. It is hoped that by trying a challenging outdoor experience like hunting/fishing that those with spinal injuries might either find a sport they can experience from a new level or go on to find other outlets equally challenging. The trusts hope is it will give an insight into finding a reason to live their new life with as much energy and joy as before their spinal injury. While it is true that hunting for the disabled will be a different experience than for the able bodied it will none the less be a unique experience. Your hunting guide will take you to remote locations where only disabled hunters can access; this gives the hunter as good a chance as an able bodied hunter of securing some game

From the ABC's Bush Telegraph with Cameron Wilson, Young Australian volunteers unwittingly paying to prop up 'cruel' canned hunting industry: South African conservationist.
oung Australian volunteers are flying to South Africa and helping to raise lion cubs in the belief that they are going to be released back into the wild, only for those lions to be used purely for canned hunting purposes.
That is the allegation of Ian Michler, a South African journalist and conservationist who has lobbied internationally to close down the canned hunting industry.
'A lot of young students are being lured over there, they are paying up to $1,000 a week to breeders to go and work in these properties on the grounds that they are doing something constructive for conservation,' said Mr Michler.
'It's a con.'
Canned hunting takes place in confined environments, where animals, most commonly lions, have been bred to be killed.
It differs from more traditional 'fair-chase' hunting, where the hunt takes place in an area large enough for the animal to have a chance of escape.
'In this day and age, where everything is on demand, canned hunting is a form where you can get your animal a lot cheaper, you can get it in a shorter period of time, and it is guaranteed,' said Mr Michler.
'The animal has no chance of escape.'

With in a few years hunters began to bring rifles to Nathan to either accurize or for help with reloading and load selection. Through these early encounters he discovered that some of the solution to effective game killing was teaching hunters about game anatomy and the importance of suitable shot placement. A major problem however, was the quality of both factory rifles along with some of the ammunition he had encountered. For each hunter whose rifle Nathan worked on, he found it useful to write a report, not just on work done, but also ways in which to optimize the usage of the hunters chosen cartridge, optimal sight settings and an effective game killing with prescribed loads

Interview with Josh James Kiwi Bushman, find out who he is, what he does and his love for bow hunting. His aim is to start a television show so he can do hunt and fish for a living and share the stuff that he does with the rest of NZ and the world.
He spent his childhood years growing up in Napier south. Although he was a city kid my brothers and he spent every spare moment playing on the city outskirts pedalling their BMX’s far and wide to go fishing at the wharf or rabbit hunting at the old winery.
Josh was a bit of a ratbag when he was a teenager and left home and school at the age of 14 to go work in the forestry and sheep shearing industry, as well as doing a heap of other odd jobs along the way.
Josh discovered white water rafting in 1997 and this led me to the West Coast, He instantly fell in love with the wild and rugged beauty of the place, and back then there were deer running round all over the shop and the amount of crystal clear rivers was staggering, as were the fishing and hunting opportunities.
There were possums in the bush back then as well so if a bloke ever ran short of a buck he could go bush for a few weeks and make enough dollars to gas the vehicle up and pay for food, beer and ammo.
In the winters Josh was working in different countries around the world rafting and spending the spring and autumn in the bush hunting deer and trapping possums.

Biological control is widely used in the control and eradication of plant and animal species. Among the most common forms of biological control are a group of approaches that aim to control or eradicate population/species by reducing the fertility and reproductive capacity of a population/species. To date the most successful of these approaches has been the Sterile Male Technique. In this approach large quantities of sterile males are released into a population each generation. If released in sufficient numbers these males monopolise matings with females, but because they are sterile no progeny are produced resulting in a reduction in the population size. The main problem with current Sterile Male approaches is that sterile males need to be produced and released every year. The Trojan Female Technique uses mitochondrial DNA mutations that affect male, but not female fertility and fitness, circumventing this problem producing continuous, self-sustaining biological control.
The TFT is a novel twist of the classic “Sterile Male” technique currently used in biocontrol. The essence of our idea is to use mitochondrial mutations that greatly affect male, but not female, fertility to produce continuous, self-sustaining biological control.
Key advantages of TFT are: No extensive use of genetic modification,No elaborate delivery system e.g. parasitic vectors and intermediate hosts,Species specific.Little (no?) danger of accidental release or cross-species transmission

Words from Dave - "At a show a few years ago I watched young people looking at taxidermied Stoats etc and thought something is not quite right here? Eventually I figured out we have 5 senses and while having animals taxidermied on display is great and in some places the only appropriate option, it only allows people to engage with their vision. There's no smell and the Don't Touch sig...ns prohibit touch. So I started building a collection of freshly trapped, then frozen animals and taking them to where ever was a good place. Oh dear that created trouble, now I get regular invites to speak to schools, cubs, scouts etc with the added comment "Please can you bring your animals?". And if you could see a class of young ones chasing each other around the playground with dead Stoats, Ferrets, Rats etc you would appreciate that this works. So if anyone needs to borrow them, they are in my freezer, all ready to go"
