The murder of Grammy nominated rapper and entrepreneur Nipsey Hussle has shaken the streets of South L.A. It is in these moments that we witness a different kind of unity. Similar to disengaged families that come together for the funeral of its patriarch. Nipsey was beloved by many but clearly that admiration didn't fall upon all. His murder is proof that no matter what level of success you obtain, for some you are still your past. Tonight's conversation will touch on how deaths like this impact the Black community and what needs to be done to shift the paradigm.
Masculinity (also called manhood or manliness) is a set of attributes, behaviors, and roles associated with boys and men. As a social construct, it is distinct from the definition of the male biological sex. Standards of manliness or masculinity vary across different cultures and historical periods. Both males and females can exhibit masculine traits and behavior.
Billy Porter broke the internet by wearing a tuxedo gown to the 2019 Oscar Awards. The avänt'gärd look was hailed phenomenal by many but chastised by those who felt the ensemble further put black men in an emasculated light. Further, there were arguments claiming his appearance -and those who supported it- added to the reasons why the black community cannot move further ahead.
The argument about masculinity and what is accepted can last for days; but DNA the Voice and myself will try to tackle the subject in 90 minutes. Wish us luck.

What methods should be used to discipline a child? I’m from the ‘go get the belt era’ but they’re saying that’s a form of child abuse. I also heard the certain non-physical punishments are cruel and mentally damaging. So, what’s best: a conversation at the dinner table while sharing a latte? I’m asking because I am seeing a lot of unruly, disrespectful, bad a** children go unscathed.

Her company 'Ervin Laces' is a donation based shoe store that provides shoes to youth in need. Understanding the financial diificulties some parents/guardians face when it comes to purchasing quality shoes for their children she asked friends and family to donate well kep pairs of unwanted shoes. The overflow received has been a blessing both locally and to youth visiting from other countries.

The black community is laden with brilliant and creative minds. We are nothing short of amazing when it comes to the hustle associated with getting our product into the hands of those interested. In South Los Angeles (the hood) there are certain corners that literally feel like an outdoor mall; and while sitting in your car awaiting the light to turn from red to green you can acquire socks, a bowl of gumbo, custom t-shirts, and a few packs of Malaysian hair. But, is that 'black business'? Furthermore, there are black owned establishments that provide a great product but have subpar customer service. What's worse is that they expect to be supported by blacks merely because they are black owned. Fair to the community: No.
There are countless entrepreneurs in need of the right door to open that will launch their business into a new plateau of success and financial freedom. However, they need assistance with branding, marketing, business planning, financial strategy, and overall execution. Let's share some tips and advice that may be of great benefit to those who have the idea but need their 'community' to help them successfully bring it into fruition. It takes a village.

"Do you think a person living with HIV who does not disclose to their sexual partner(s) should be charged with a felony?" This is a question I asked on a recent Facebook thread that garnered over 200 responses. I noticed that the 'yes' responses primarily came from women and heterosexual men. Is there a reason for that? Does the gay community view HIV through a different lens? It's time to talk and get a better understanding of (A) why those infected fear disclosing their status; (B) why are people still having sex with persons of unknown status; and (C) what needs to be done to increase HIV awareness within communities of color.

Shock images aimed at deterring risky behaviors were the norm and antiretrovirals that extended life for the thousands were modern breakthroughs. Yet, for some reason the epidemic is still here and Generation X is being infected at alarming rates.

There are many things that we keep secret or silent about in our families and communities. One of those things is domestic violence or intimate partner violence. When someone you love hurts you, it creates feelings of betrayal and shame. These feelings can create a shield of silence and secrecy for protection. Couple this with the pain of racism and sexism, and it can deepen this response. This can describe the black community’s reaction to domestic violence or intimate partner violence (DV/IPV). This may not be every black person’s response to DV/IPV, but there is pervasive secrecy and silence in the community that interferes with healing. **

The 13th amendment, which formally abolished slavery in the United States, passed the Senate on April 8, 1864, and the House on January 31, 1865. However, most aren't aware that slavery in this country didn't officially end until Dec. 6, 1865, the day the 13th Amendment to the Constitution was ratified. Yet, over 250 years later many Blacks are still treated like property and victimized due to their skin color.
Will the playing field ever be level or should Blacks just accustom themselves to systems that may never have their best interest at heart? Furthermore, how do these circumstances effect Black communities and the way they interact within?

A video of a sermon by gospel singer Kim Burrell went viral due to a segment that demonized gays and made negative accusations about a high-ranking religious leader. The consequences of her words were grave, even to the point of losing engagements and invitations to Hollywood events. Some say the firestorm was far too harsh; while others think it was well deserved.

PrEP, or Pre-exposure prophylaxis is a once a day pill regimen that HIV negative people can take to prevent HIV infection. Sounds great, right? Could be a gateway to ending the epidemic, yes? Then why are so many Black and Latino gay men (who are at highest risk of infection) still in the dark about how to access it?

Rape: unlawful sexual activity and usually sexual intercourse carried out forcibly or under threat of injury against the will usually of a female or with a person who is beneath a certain age or incapable of valid consent.
A few years ago Jayce Baron was raped. Recently, he penned a powerful article chronicling the assault. It touched hearts and sparked much needed dialogue. One result was him being invited to speak at the Califiornia State Capital in support of a bill that would remove the statute of limitations on when rape charges can be filed. Another was a barrage of emails he received from persons who had experienced the same thing.
Unfortunately, rape can happen to anyone at anytime. Statistically, 1 out of 10 rape victims are male. There are probably more but, due to fear of stigma and backlash, many go unreported. Join us tonight for a sensitive and powerful exchange designed to heighten awareness.

There are things that Black men in America face that other minority groups will never understand. Now add that string of problems to being gay and life can feel insurmountable. By many, Black gay men are viewed as subpar members of the Black community. The marginalization can have a negative impact on how they view themselves and their place in society. It can even hinder how they interact with other Black gay men. How does one safely navigate through that space?
Shannon will discuss some of the obstacles young Black gay men face in terms of dating, sex, relationships (friends and family), HIV, and the daunting task of finding your social niche. It will be an enlightening conversation that all gay men -young and old- should listen to.
It is apparent that our youth are unapologetically becoming more sexual. Online videos, snaps, 'grams', Tumblr posts and whatever other social stream that allows, all prove that Generation X has no shame in their sex game. Is that good...or is it bad? Should we suppress their sexual liberation, or support them in their quest to express who they are? Wait....these are KIDS....my bad. What was I thinking?!?!?
Their ideals about sex, love, romance and dating have become skewed and misguided. Who is to blame? Some say the school system should be more involved, while others say parents should be solely responsioble. Yet, in the midst of the back and forth we have teens doing the 'back and forth'.

A recent video showed a young Black man being harassed at gunpoint by a carload of other young Black gay men because his pants were too tight. A slew of anti-gay slurs were expressed and the video went viral. It angered many but unfortunately the hate against gays is not uncommon.
It is time to discuss the contributions of the Black gay community. It will be eye-opening for many after they are forced to imagine how life would be if many of these influencers had never been born. It will also encourage those young Black gay men and lesbian women who are told they will never amount to anything as long as they are gay.

Black women have been scrutinized over the years for their 'ethnic' looks. Oftentimes this results in changes that make them appear more Eurocentric than necessary. Over the years rap legend Lil Kim has endured extensive plastic surgeries to change her look. A most recent pic shows the most dramatic transformation yet. She has literally changed hues and now resembles a blonde haired white woman. In her own words:
"All my life men have told me I wasn’t pretty enough—even the men I was dating. And I’d be like, ‘Well, why are you with me, then?’” It’s always been men putting me down just like my dad. To this day when someone says I’m cute, I can’t see it. I don’t see it no matter what anybody says.”
Is it the fault of the black community that so many black women want to change their appearance? Is there a lack of affirmation for black women with natural looks, shape and style? Have we forgotten about Sarah Baartman?

For some reason the 'B' in the acronym is always overlooked or downplayed. The bisexual community faces a lot of slack and are called 'confused' or 'greedy' by those who don't fully understand their place on the needle of human sexuality. Recently, Love and HIp Hop star Miles Brock was spotted with Sundy Carter from the Basketball Wives franchise. On the show Miles was in a same-sex relationship with Milan Christopher. Now that he is with Sundy, his claim of being bisexual is attacked and ridiculed. Is this fair?

La' Porsha Renae sang her butt off throughout her stint on American Idol. Although she did not win top honor she still snagged a record deal and a legion of supporters from all walks of life.
Most recent, she was quoted as saying:
“This is how I feel about the LGBT community: They are people just like us. They’re not animals as someone [Manny Pacquiao] stated before. They’re people with feelings. Although all of us may not agree with that particular lifestyle for religious reasons, whatever the reason is, you still treat each other with respect. Everybody is a human being. We should be able to coexist with one another.”
Renae went on, however, “I am one of the people who don’t really agree with that lifestyle. I wasn’t brought up that way. It wasn’t how I was raised.” Still, she added, “But I do have a lot of friends and a lot of people that I love dearly who are gay and homosexual and they’re such sweet, nice people. We should just respect each other’s differences and opinions and move on.”
I heard/read some very interesting retorts that made me ponder how I felt about her statement. That being said, I am left to ask, "Is the (black) gay community being overly sensitive about her transparency, or should her views be respected and not hinder the growth of her career?"

It is often argued that being gay is a choice. A desired bulls-eye placed on the backs of those who are ostracized, alienated and ridiculed for their attraction to the same gender. Although many seem strong and secure on the outside, the internal pains are usually masked by risky habits and/or guarded behaviors that negatively influence how they interact within mainstream society.

The overall objective of this conversation is NOT to force a change in people's opinions or theologies; the main purpose is to begin the much-needed dialogue on the realities of doing ministry with the LGBT community in mind. Whether you affirm or deny homosexuality theologically, we can all agree all people are worthy of experiencing God's love; and we must admit that the church has traditionally been a very hostile and hypocritical place for LGBT individuals. How do we do ministry today in a way that upholds our biblical convictions (as diverse as they may be), and still demonstrate love to a community (as diverse as it may be)?

Forgiving someone can either be extremely easy, or one of the most complicated acts ever. This episode with discuss the variables associated with 'forgiveness' and why it should be a willing act. It is no shock that the Black community is in need of an overhaul. Exhausted by the circumstances they face, many have given up and accepted what they feel to be insurmountable odds. However, there are men (and women) out there who are doing their part to make a difference and provide positive options. Greg Rogers and Javar Fulton are two of those leaders and their 'Get Off The Block' program is making a difference in the lives of young Black men striving to better themselves.

The Christian church has been under a microscope for quite some time. Many who were once adamant about attending are now finding solace in the privacy of their own home via televised broadcasts and live-streams. However, those individuals still uphold the Christian banner and profess to follow Jesus Christ. There is a difference between being a non-church going Christian and one who has left the faith altogether.
This episode will feature two individuals who were once actively involved in Christianity (even held ministerial titles) and have resolved within themselves that there is another way to God. Yes, they are ex-Christians who unapologetically subscribe to a different belief system. Kudos to the Transgender community for finally getting the positive spotlight they deserve. Celebrities Janet Mock, Laverne Cox, Chaz Bono and Caitlyn Jenner have truly helped kick down doors and ignite thought provoking conversations about another aspect of human sexuality. However, some of the media exposure seems a bit contrived and competitive as if networks are trying to 'one-up' the other by including a Trans topic or character in their programming.
Most recently rumors spread of the Real Housewives of Atlanta adding a Trans person to their cast. That being said, are Black gay men no longer the hot ticket on reality television. Has their season runs its course, and if so is it wise for the Trans community to try to fill that void? Will it devalue their struggle or take things to the next level.

'Cheetah in August' is a riveting story about a former high school track athlete who's distorted views on love, negatively affects the people closest to him. Black fathers are often stereotyped as cold, distant, or absent men who don't engage with their children. They are accused of making babies and leaving them by the wayside. Although this may be true of some, it definitely is not the case for all. This episode will discuss fatherhood and hear from men who play an integral part in the lives of their offspring. SOUTH LOS ANGELES (KABC) --A spike in gang violence in South Los Angeles could be spread by social media and has resulted in increased police patrols in the area. Five people were shot within a matter of hours in three separate incidents Saturday night, which resulted in the Los Angeles Police Department issuing a tactical alert. Some believe the shootings are related to the social media postings using #100Days100Nights. They are messages warning of gang warfare and threats of 100 days of violence.
That is but one of the headlines circulating throughout Los Angeles. Some say it's a conspiracy to evoke fear within the Black community. Others believe it to be a truth that needs far more attention. Either way you look at it, lives have been senselessly lost and residents of South Los Angeles are tired.
On this episode I will be joined by Pastor Michael JT Fisher of Greater Zion Baptist Church in Compton, CA. He will share reports from a community meeting he held (hours earlier) with pastors, politicians, and commuity activists about the wave of killings in his city and what needs to be done to shift things. A lot of gays from other cities view Los Angeles as a social mecca complete with upscale clubs, chic restaurants, and celebrity sightings on every corner. They also believe it to be a safe-haven for them to be out and open; living the life of a -mock- Kardashian while enjoyoing all the city has to offer. How true that is remains to be seen; especially for members of the Black gay community. Believe it or not, as large as Los Angeles is there are no bars dedicated to Black gays and only one club (that opens and closes at will). However, Brandon Anthony (The Socialite House) is doing his part to change all of that. He's young, sexy, hip, and one of my co-stars in the upcoming original series 'Cheetah in August'.

Same-Sex Marriage is legal in 37 of the 50 United States. It is a definitely controversial issue -for some- that further redefines the word 'family'. Earlier this year a video entitled "Love Has No Labels" was released and went viral. It is a simple statement that has couples of diverse make-ups stand behind a screen that only shows their skeletons. When the couples emerge from behind the screen viewers are amazed to see various degrees of love i.e., gay couples, interracial relationships, different faiths, etc. which showcases that true love has no color, gender, or sexual orientation. I invited Jason and Anthony Henderson-Strong (a couple featured in the video) to be my special guests so we can discuss their road to becoming legally married gay men and new fathers to a wonderful son.

Being a mom is already difficult. It requires patience, love, understanding, and the right amount of discipline.That being said, imagine being a Black mother in a season where police killings of innocent Black youth are becoming regular occurences.
Recently, during a police protest in Baltimore, a Black mom physically disciplined her son in public for taking part in the activities. The video of the 'abuse' went viral and lots of people weighed in. Some hailed her a 'hero', while others accused of her of publicly emasculating a Black man and adding to an already oppressed state of mind.
I have invited three Black moms to take part in a discussion about the fears and challenges of raising a Black child in today's social climate. We will discuss the video, their thoughts on the current generation, and what they would like to see in response to all the killings (from both cops and other Blacks). This will be an empowering and thought provoking conversation.

Manifest Justice is a large-scale pop-up art exhibition, cultural convening, and community organizing event taking place in the Baldwin Hills area of South Los Angeles. Unlike other civil rights exhibits that highlight events from the 60's, Manifest Justice is hauntingly current. Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner, and Oscar Grant are but a few of the many victims who have been immortalized through the works of over 150 artists.
Tonight I will be joined by Nijeul Xavier Porter, a young man who is instrumental to the success of the event; and Gabriel Garcia Roman, an artist who has works on display at the event. Both will share why the event is important -especially in today's social climate-and what it means to be a part of the experience.

Based upon media depictions one would assume that Black gay men are either effeminite, on the Down-Low, or in interracial relationships. The lack of diversity is both frustrating and unfair.
