A Pint With Seaniebee is an informal chat with creative folks who have lived, or are living brave, interesting and unconventional lives. We examine how their background and upbringing forged the path they went down; what decisions they took that made all the difference; what ideas they have to change the world in which we live; what life-wisdom they have garnered; and looking back, perhaps what they might change or what advice they might offer up to those following in their footsteps.
David Hayes began his ad career on October 4th 1982 and now runs the media company, Wavemaker in Dublin. One of Seaniebee’s oldest pals, he sits down to discuss existentialism: from the future of the creative industries; to his own (following a recent brush with prostate cancer); and, in a table-turning-judo-move, quizzes Seaniebee on how he sees his own life working out going forward. The concept of “Stop Pedaling” and “Optimistic Nihilism” are also discussed.

The world lost one of its larger-than-life good guys on July 26th. Anthony Pavoni, was a tremendous raconteur; kind, soft-spoken and generous of spirit; and a guy you would have any day in the trenches with you fighting whatever good battle needed to be fought. Sincere condolences to his wife Jane, and daughters, Kelly and Tara. May he rest in peace.

Tony Pavoni is a first-generation Italian American who grew up during the middle of the last century in Rochester (New York). He contributed to the family income as a nine-year-old caddy; eventually becoming an accomplished golfer and college footballer in his teens. In 1964 he joined the Marine Corps, and led an amphibious brigade unit into Vietnam during the Tet Offensive. He shares his thoughts on the war and the difficulties he faced returning home and assimilating back into society. In 1996, a heart attack forced him to reevaluate everything and he immediately decided to get out of the corporate world. He believes in always having a clear focus; learning from mistakes; and constantly striving for betterment as one journeys through life.

Returning to the pod for the fourth time, our resident future-thinker, Richard Watson, arrives in fine fettle to guide us through the global mayhem that confronts us all at every turn these days.
Richard is a thoughtful, questioning, truth seeking, self-obsessed, neurotic, contrarian writer that, due to luck more than anything else, has ended up being labelled a futurist (NB: correct term is futurologist).
Most days he manages to make a good living telling people that everything will turn out OK despite the fact he’s not sure himself sometimes. He enjoys thinking about artificial intelligence and what (if anything) makes us human and especially likes drawing ‘maps’ that provoke conversation and debate. When he’s not doing all this, he can normally be found gardening, trying to book flights to Greece, drinking wine, arguing with his lawn mower, smoking cigars, or pulling dead mice out of his old sports car (they’re cute, but they eat the wiring, especially over winter).
Oh yeah, and somehow, he has managed to get five books published and blagged his way into both the Technology Foresight Practice at Imperial College London and the Judge School at Cambridge. Not bad for someone that got a ‘B’ in English language O-level and failed maths twice. Go figure. Two of his best books are Digital Vs Human (2017), and Future Files (2007).

Seaniebee’s father has been one of Ireland’s pre-eminent ventriloquists for the past six decades. On the occasion of his 82nd birthday, Seoirse (George Boyle) joins the pod with his sidekick Gerald to share their adventure stories down the years. We discuss what it was like growing up in Dublin during the War and how his love for ventriloquism bloomed, as he made his fist dummies from papier-mâché and daub. Seoirse and Gerald represented Ireland and reached the final on The Original Gong Show with Ted Mack, and were the opening act when Ireland’s TV station RTE launched in 1961. George dovetailed his ventriloquism with a successful career in engineering and shares his wisdom on the current state of the world and ideas on how we might get back on course. CARRIE REICHARDT HAS A PINT WITH SEANIEBEE
Carrie Reichardt is a multi-media artist and one of the UK’s leading, most authentic and anarchic art activists. She talks openly about her battles with mental illness and her challenging, shocking and destigmatizing related artworks; her work to bring creativity and dignity to Romanian orphans; and the astonishing story of her befriending inmates on death row in Texas, which led to her attending an execution in Huntsville and a subsequent fight against the inhumanity of capital punishment. Carrie believes that creativity is what gives us our humanity and our sanity; in art as a form of therapy to deal with emotions and life-changes; the importance of empathy; and in using provocative, boundary-pushing, irreverent and often politically incorrect expressions to engender meaningful reaction, response and change. In 2017 she was appointed the first ever visual artist for Shakespeare’s Birthplace Trust; and has also spent the last 21 years mosaicing the outside of her three story home in Chiswick.

THERE ARE SEVEN FUNDAMENTAL TENETS
I. One should strive to act with compassion and empathy toward all creatures in accordance with reason.

On the occasion of his 82nd birthday, Seoirse (George Boyle) joins the pod with his sidekick Gerald to share their adventure stories down the years. This is an astonishing story of redemption and by far the most controversial and polarizing guest we’ve had on the show so far. Antonio Fernandez, aka KING TONE, is the former leader of The Latin Kings, the largest Hispanic street gang in the US, with over 50,000 members worldwide. Growing up in a Brooklyn ghetto, he left school at the age of 9 to become a drug dealer and begin a life of violent crime that eventually led to crack addiction and him being incarcerated whilst still in his teens. In Riker’s Island he joined The Latin Kings, at the time a primarily prison-based gang that eventually transferred itself out onto the streets of New York, where they quickly became one of the most vicious and feared operations in the city. Antonio recounts how he set out to transform the gang away from crime and into a political movement, fighting for social justice for all Hispanics. A disbelieving NYPD called him ‘a gangster with a PR campaign’, and so began a long running feud with Mayor Rudolph Giuliani that ended with King Tone being put away for 13 years. In addition to his extraordinary story, we discuss how Donald Trump might feasibly be leading America towards another civil war, and how it is now time for all marginalized groups to come together and ACT to combat the growing divisiveness across the country.

Dave Richeson has a pint with Seaniebee (Interview begins @42minutes)
When Dave Richeson was eleven-years-old, he was accosted and almost shot dead by eight cops when leaving his Dallas hotel room to go to the swimming pool. He has been at police gunpoint twice since, for no other reason than the color of his skin. Today, he spends a lot of his time intelligently and powerfully advocating against America's still-deeply-ingrained racism; promoting Black Lives Matter and railing against the continued senseless killing of blacks by law enforcement officials.
Recorded prior to this week that saw two more slayings in Minnesota and Louisiana, and culminated in the murder of five police officers in Dallas; we discuss the way race relations is getting worse and examine what needs to be done to fix implicit racial bias in the country.
Dave is also a former money trader who chucked a high-powered job to set up a theatre company and pursue acting and creative writing. He currently works in PR and is a member of The Institute of Hermetic Philosophy. Set up 50 years ago by Chilean philosopher, Dario Salas Sommer, it is an educational program that believes in promoting the power of consciousness in today’s society. Throughout our lives we are programmed and conditioned to believe certain things which tend to cloud our interpretation of reality. The world lost a legend last week. A man who, in his own words, was oscillating on a different frequency. Pete Dunne was an artist, singer, storyteller and raconteur. He decided to hitchhike from London to Afghanistan in 1977, and spent ten years as a Celtic Sadhu wandering Indian Himalayas, allowing the universe to provide for him, which it always did. Pete was a kind man. A kindred spirit, but so much braver than I could ever be. I only met him in the last two years of his life. But I am honoured to have known him. Pete got married to his beloved, Gilly Kelly Dunne the week before he died. My heart and love goes out to her and all those who cherished him.

Growing up one of 7 kids into a construction family in rural Ontario, Tony Pigott did most of his exploring early in life. After a spell in the steel mills, he studied Russian history before deciding to set off and see the world at the tender age of 21. A brave and adventurous circumnavigation followed, including a journey across Russia on the Trans-Siberia Railway; a fascinating number of years spent teaching remote Neolithic tribes in the mountains of Papua New Guinea; jumping freighters to Hong Kong and arriving in Laos during the civil war. We also discuss the differences between Australia and Canada and why the latter is doing so much better than America right now, across so many important criteria. On his return to Canada, he joined the ad agency JWT, where he spent over 30 years rising to the top as Chairman. Ten years ago, he established BrandAid Project – a business focused on bringing best marketing and design practice to small artisan producers in developing countries. Now named BrandTrade, they have done much work in Haiti, and more recently Peru where they brand and match small producers with resellers and are at the leading edge of the new, technology-led, ‘microtrade marketing’.

“They were saying ‘certain stories shouldn’t be told’…that was the reason they wanted it to be removed…like a quarter of a million people…there was one festival in the UK, they got so much hate mail, people saying they were going to boycott the festival if they were going to show the film, they ended up dropping it.”
Filmmaker Vincent Lambe was the centre of much controversy earlier this year, when his short film – Detainment - was nominated for an Oscar. The movie charts the immediate aftermath of the arrest of two young boys charged with, and subsequently found guilty of, the 1993 murder of a two-year-old toddler named Jamie Bulger in Liverpool. The case was so disturbing it left a nation floundering for answers that never really came, and it remains a raw wound to the degree that a film such as this can cause the visceral backlash it did with many believing it should never have been made, not to mind being accepted into the Oscars. Vincent came under huge criticism for not engaging with Jamie Bulger’s mother prior to making the film. The tabloid media eviscerated him and his film (including spreading many mistruths about its content), and more mainstream journalists found themselves gagged by editors when it came to reviews and any attempts to divorce content from hysteria. Detainment is a powerful work that is difficult to watch, and raises many questions about what constitutes responsible film-making around such sensitive subjects.

In the week that saw the happy announcement that Spitting Image is returning to our screens, we are joined by one of the original crew (he made Rolf Harris). Wilfrid Wood is one of the pre-eminent sculptors (not the Rodin type) and modern artists working in Britain today. His work is unique, playful and often ironic, especially his 3D portraits of the likes of Macca, Wazza, Bojo and Greta. He is also known for his superb caricatures. Amongst lots of other things, we discuss what it means to be beautiful and the current craze for over-doing the old makeup.

This week we’re joined by a true UK comedy legend. Richard Vranch chucked a budding career as a Physicist in favour of the stage and has never looked back. He joined the Footlights in Cambridge in 1981 as a contemporary of Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, Tony Slattery and Emma Thompson. In 1986 he began performing improv with The Comedy Store Players together with the likes of Paul Merton, Josie Lawrence and Mike Myers. The stage show eventually morphed into the wildly successful Whose Line Is It Anyway? and many of the original cast continue to perform every Sunday and Wednesday at The Comedy Store, making it the world’s longest running comedy show with the same cast. Richard is also a writer and standup comedian (and he occasionally likes to play the piano).

Carrie Reichardt is a multi-media artist and one of the UK’s leading, most authentic and anarchic art activists. She talks openly about her battles with mental illness and her challenging, shocking and destigmatizing related artworks; her work to bring creativity and dignity to Romanian orphans; and the astonishing story of her befriending inmates on death row in Texas, which led to her attending an execution in Huntsville and a subsequent fight against the inhumanity of capital punishment. Carrie believes that creativity is what gives us our humanity and our sanity; in art as a form of therapy to deal with emotions and life-changes; the importance of empathy; and in using provocative, boundary-pushing, irreverent and often politically incorrect expressions to engender meaningful reaction, response and change. In 2017 she was appointed the first ever visual artist for Shakespeare’s Birthplace Trust; and has also spent the last 21 years mosaicing the outside of her three story home in Chiswick.

Although still in her twenties, Louise Bleach has already lived an amazingly full life, busying herself in sustainability projects designed to make the world a better place. Born and raised in Hong Kong, she moved to Edinburgh to do a Masters in Social Anthropology, which included a fascinating, on-the-ground thesis on spiritual exorcisms in nomadic Moroccan desert tribes. Disillusioned with the rat race in London, she decided to totally change her life by plopping her finger on an atlas with the intent of moving to whichever country it landed on! That country turned out to be Malawi, and her brave adventures continued there with a three-year stint studying permaculture and cultivating fair trade mangoes. Initially a huge success, this social project was utterly destroyed by the greed of gas/mining investors who took over the plant and squeezed all the joy out of the operation to maximize profits. This situation is a perfect micro-study of how Capitalism itself is not enough to see the world straight and how its immorality and inherent lack of compassion drives inequality, foments fear and crushes communities trying desperately to find their feet. We also discuss the nature of existence, free will, other world dimensions, AI ethics and whether or not there are ghosts, spirits, and/or Gods. And she also shares her views on climate change and how we now urgently need to reduce our addiction to plastic before it’s too late. Louise currently works for clean-tech company Desolenator, which desalinates water cost effectively using solar power and is beta testing the technology in Dubai, Cyprus and Lake Turkana in Northern Kenya.

Ancestor of Alexander Osborne, one of the rebels who tried, unsuccessfully to help the 1st Duke of Monmouth overthrow the monarchy in 1685, Bob Osborne was born into a large family in London’s rag-and-bone underworld of vice and prostitution. He has lived an extraordinary life, full of adventures, twists and turns. The first of his family to gain a proper education, he was soon a published poet and took to a Bohemian, hedonistic lifestyle traveling Europe. When his own family arrived, he needed a career, and set up a successful wine importation business, before jettisoning that to become an artist based in St. Ives. He shares the tale of what became of his childhood pet monkey called Wanker, and we also discuss emotional availability when it comes to men in relationships, why political correctness is killing comedy [NB: do not listen if you are offended by the “N” or “C” words] and how he suspects a mass extinction is imminent on our planet. Today he is one part of the anarchic art duo, Mad in Chiswick, with his partner Carrie Reichardt.

This is an astonishing story of redemption and by far the most controversial and polarizing guest we’ve had on the show so far. Antonio Fernandez, aka KING TONE, is the former leader of The Latin Kings, the largest Hispanic street gang in the US, with over 50,000 members worldwide. Growing up in a Brooklyn ghetto, he left school at the age of 9 to become a drug dealer and begin a life of violent crime that eventually led to crack addiction and him being incarcerated whilst still in his teens. In Riker’s Island he joined The Latin Kings, at the time a primarily prison-based gang that eventually transferred itself out onto the streets of New York, where they quickly became one of the most vicious and feared operations in the city. Antonio recounts how he set out to transform the gang away from crime and into a political movement, fighting for social justice for all Hispanics. A disbelieving NYPD called him ‘a gangster with a PR campaign’, and so began a long running feud with Mayor Rudolph Giuliani that ended with King Tone being put away for 13 years. In addition to his extraordinary story, we discuss how Donald Trump might feasibly be leading America towards another civil war, and how it is now time for all marginalized groups to come together and ACT to combat the growing divisiveness across the country.

Today we sit down with one of the world’s greatest living accordionists - Rusmir Piknjač - who shares both his life story and some of his amazing work. Born in Sarajevo, he recounts the trauma of Yugoslavia’s disintegration and the terrible war that ensued. A refugee, he spent time in both Austria and Australia where, relying on his musical talent, he worked from the ground up to build a livelihood for his young family: a path that led from busking on the streets of Sydney to eventually setting up the renowned Aria music school there. In 2004, a sudden brain aneurism (that briefly left him clinically dead) caused him to reconsider his life and look at things from a different perspective. Soon thereafter he relocated back to his homeland, where he set up a sister school to Aria. He believes in the power of music to unite people, drive multiculturalism and build hope for the future of all humanity.

Two years ago, she bravely embedded herself with the coalition armies in Afghanistan in search of a long-lost, hand-painted, photography technique unique to the country. Her next project brought her to the Comoros Islands and she shares the fascinating culture that has developed there. Working in so many different Muslim countries, she unveils a very different side to Islam than the one most prevalent in our current news headlines. Most recently, she has based herself in London working as one of the only practicing masters in the declining art of dye transfer. Jean is an inspiration to anyone who has a dream or an ambitious idea and explains how single-minded determination, faith, trust and bravery can always make amazing things happen.

This week sees Robert De Niro open the 22nd Sarajevo Film Festival. To mark the occasion, Seaniebee is honoured to welcome the Festival’s Chief Selector to the podcast. Elma graduated in Screenwriting and Cinema History at the Sarajevo Academy of Performing Arts; she has a Master of Science degree; a PhD in Film and Literature; and is both a professor of screenwriting at the Academy and the head of the Association of Bosnian Filmmakers. She is also a screenwriter and producer who has made four movies. Her first feature film – SNOW – won over 30 international awards including the Grand Prix at Cannes in 2008.
Elma shares her life story from her early years growing up in Iran, to her experiences during the war in Bosnia. To coincide with the launch of his ambitious new project – “All The Black People in Citizen Kane” – artist Craig Damrauer joins the pod to reflect on his life journey and the lessons he has learned: from growing up in Denver as the son of scientists to becoming a baker, a kitchen manager, a food scientist, an adman and eventually focusing on his artistic passions. ABOUT “All the Black People in Citizen Kane” In the 20th Century’s most iconic movie, there are 23 black actors. Two have speaking roles (‘Yes, sir’ and ‘Come right in, Mr. Kane’), there are two bands, three loiterers, one wheelchair pusher, three servants and one driver. The actors were un-credited and occupy 2.9 minutes of screen time. Taking inspiration from James Baldwin, the piece consists of 171,744 frames, each hand-erased with the exception of the black actors’ appearances onscreen. Almost 4 years in production, it is an attempt, by erasing, to make clear that which is nearly invisible. The work can be seen at the New Orleans Contemporary Arts Center from August 6th – October 1st as part of the exhibition, “A Building With A View”: Experiments in Anarchitecture.

When Dave Richeson was eleven-years-old, he was accosted and almost shot dead by eight cops when leaving his Dallas hotel room to go to the swimming pool. He has been at police gunpoint twice since, for no other reason than the color of his skin. Today, he spends a lot of his time intelligently and powerfully advocating against America's still-deeply-ingrained racism; promoting Black Lives Matter and railing against the continued senseless killing of blacks by law enforcement officials.
Recorded prior to this week that saw two more slayings in Minnesota and Louisiana, and culminated in the murder of five police officers in Dallas; we discuss the way race relations is getting worse and examine what needs to be done to fix implicit racial bias in the country.
Dave is also a former money trader who chucked a high-powered job to set up a theatre company and pursue acting and creative writing.
