The Prison Officer Podcast: Recent Episodes

Michael Cantrell

The Prison Officer Podcast is a place to share experiences, talk about leadership, fight through the stress and learn to survive one of the toughest careers out there. I want to discuss the life, dreams, and experiences of those who work inside the walls of our nation's prisons.

The fastest way a jail gets dangerous isn’t a single riot or headline event, it’s the quiet drift: missed checks, inconsistent rules, sloppy units, and leaders who stop sweating the small stuff. We sit down with Major Sean Klucznik, Jail Administrator at the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office and immediate past president of the American Jail Association, to talk about what actually stabilizes a facility when staffing is tight, budgets are political, and public trust is fragile.

We get into what he saw while traveling during his AJA presidency, including the funding battles agencies face nationwide, the importance of professional networking in corrections, and how relationships can turn into real outcomes like regional training partnerships. Sean shares how connecting with NYC corrections led to the launch of the Northeast Regional Correctional Training Center and why “back to basics” direct supervision still matters when everything feels like it’s changing.

Then we go deep on his book, Broken Windows Behind Bars: Transforming Jail Operations Through Order and Accountability. The core idea is simple and hard at the same time: consistent standards prevent bigger problems. We talk mentorship, first-line supervision, ethics as a slow creep, micro training that supervisors can run every shift, and why line staff can shape culture by “setting the tone” with professionalism, presence, and follow-through.

Subscribe for more real-world corrections leadership conversations, share this with a partner who cares about doing the job right, and leave a review so more officers can find it. What’s one small standard you’d enforce tomorrow to make your facility 1% better?

After nearly three decades in corrections, I returned to the prison where my career began.

Walking those old cellblocks brought back memories I hadn't thought about in years—the lessons, the mistakes, the friendships, the fear, and the moments that shaped the leader I eventually became.

In this deeply personal episode of The Prison Officer Podcast, I take you behind the walls of the institution that started it all. You'll hear stories from those early days, reflections on how corrections has changed, and why some lessons never leave you, no matter how many years pass.

This visit also became the perfect opportunity to introduce my new book, The Weight of Justice: Leadership Lessons from Inside America's Toughest Prisons. Many of the experiences that began behind these walls ultimately found their way onto its pages.

If you've ever wondered what it's really like to spend a career in corrections—or how those experiences shape a person long after they leave the institution—this episode is for you.

Every corrections leader eventually faces the moment when the order coming down the chain doesn't sit right — when policy, pressure, or politics puts your people at risk. Leading up isn't insubordination. It's one of the highest forms of leadership. In this episode, we're talking about how to manage your boss, influence decisions above your pay grade, and still protect the men and women counting on you to have their backs.

We also dig into what actually builds influence in a prison or jail setting: checking your ego, choosing results over credit, and making yourself valuable through skills and outside training. If you want a seat at the table, you earn it by becoming the person leadership trusts for expertise.

Corrections gets judged by headlines it didn’t write, so I’m taking you behind the scenes of a month that reminded me why this profession deserves real respect. From Correctional Officers Week events to national recognition, I share the moments that felt like the “best of corrections” and the lessons we can bring back to our own agencies.

We start at the One Voice United conference (link below), where I join Pete Bludworth (Corrections Unfiltered) and Sarah Robuck (Lexipol and Corrections1) to talk about our jobs and our voices. If we don’t tell the truth about what correctional officers do, nature abhors a vacuum, and the public story gets filled with TV myths, one-sided news, and silence about the good work happening inside facilities. We also dig into wellness in corrections, efforts to get lawmakers to walk through prisons before setting policy on staffing and funding, and a powerful account from New York’s union leadership caught between political pressure and officers pushed past the breaking point.

Then we pivot to the stories many people never hear: the role correctional staff played during 9/11 recovery, and how corrections shows up in emergencies with resources and readiness. I also talk about practical support for staff, including a vendor focused on home loans for public servants that explicitly includes corrections, and the National Medal of Honor for Corrections banquet, where courage and service are honored on a national stage.

One of the vendors I met at OVU (link below) is a company that is working to get public service heroes, including correctional officers, into houses. American Hero Home Loans uses its Hero Advantage+™ to connect eligible heroes with trusted real estate, lending, title, settlement, insurance, and home service partners.

We close with training and leadership: field training insights from the Southeast Field Training Officers Association (SEFTOA - link below). I also share with a new leadership class my framework for handling change by reframing fear and walking through the next door of their life with skill and confidence.

If you care about corrections leadership, correctional officer wellness, and changing public perception of corrections, this one’s for you. Subscribe, share it with a coworker, and leave a review so more staff can find these stories.

We talk with Captain Tevin Dixon about the road from Oklahoma DOC Correctional Officer to shift supervisor and the mentors who shaped his calm, respectful leadership style. We also break down the gate incident with a derogatory provocateur and why professionalism, transparency, and peer support matter when corrections gets tested in public.

We also dig into what shaped Tevin’s leadership long before he wore a uniform: growing up in Oklahoma with a true village, being held accountable by family, and learning discipline through work and expectations. He shares what it felt like to step into prison work at 24 with no prior exposure, how mentors guided him, and why respect, nonverbal communication, and policy knowledge are survival skills for any corrections officer. His time in both security and case management adds another layer, showing how understanding process, paperwork, and programming can make you more effective and more approachable.

The conversation goes deeper into mentorship and resilience, including what Tevin tells younger officers, how he supports staff under stress, and why corrections trauma is often invisible to the public. If you care about prison safety, correctional staff wellness, leadership under pressure, and what professionalism looks like when someone is trying to bait you on camera, this one is for you. Subscribe, share this with a coworker, and leave a review so more people hear what the job really takes.

A correctional officer gets assaulted at work and someone shrugs it off as “part of the job.” That mindset is poisoning recruitment, accelerating burnout, and making prisons more dangerous for everyone inside. We sit down with Jeffrey Noble, a 39-year corrections professional who rose from correctional officer to warden and later worked inside Ohio’s legislative oversight world, to explain why Andy’s Law is gaining traction and what it tries to fix.

We start with the case that shaped the bill: the Christmas Day 2024 killing of Officer Andy Lansing at Ross Correctional Institution. From there, we dig into prison safety and accountability reforms that go beyond slogans, including treating spitting and feces assaults like the criminal acts they are, strengthening penalties when staff are murdered, and keeping people who commit serious violence in higher security longer. Jeff explains why behavior-based classification matters when agencies feel pressure to “push custody down” to solve bed-space problems.

We also get specific about modern security risks: contraband and illegal conveyance, fentanyl exposure, the lack of detention authority when a visitor is caught bringing drugs, and why reliable K9 access can’t be a once-in-a-while luxury, and why leadership qualifications should be based on real corrections experience, not politics.

If you care about correctional officer safety, prison reform legislation that targets misconduct, and practical ways to reduce contraband and violence, listen now, share this with a coworker, and leave a review so more people find the conversation.

Most use-of-force problems don’t start with bad intent; they start with bad preparation. We’re talking with Joe Buice, a lifelong martial artist and retired sheriff’s office lieutenant who has spent decades in corrections, led high-liability teams, and now serves as Pepperball’s Director of Implementation. The result is a practical, no-theory conversation about what actually keeps officers safe in jails, prisons, and street encounters.

We get specific about defensive tactics and why “just grab an arm” fails when stress hits. Joe breaks down the real gap he sees across agencies: perishable skills treated like check-the-box training. We discuss how hesitation shows up in body-worn video reviews, why fundamentals and repetition create fluidity, and how control tactics can reduce injuries for both staff and inmates while staying inside policy and lawful orders.

We also connect the dots between training and leadership. Joe shares how strong teams are built by putting the right people in the right roles, leading from the front, and slowing down long enough to listen. Then we shift to safer options first, including Pepperball for distance, area saturation, buffer zones, and lowering the career-long toll of hands-on fights. If you care about corrections officer safety, law enforcement training, defensive tactics that work, and smarter use of force decisions, this one delivers.

Behind the Wall is Live! https://www.patreon.com/ThePrisonOfficer

Silence doesn’t stay empty for long. When correctional agencies refuse to talk about what happens behind the wall, someone else will gladly explain it for us, and they’ll usually pick the most extreme version. From the ILEETA conference, I take one simple line, “nature abhors a vacuum,” and apply it to one of the biggest challenges in corrections: who controls the narrative of prison life, jail incidents, and use of force.

We get specific about what the public rarely sees. A 30-second YouTube clip won’t show the hours of de-escalation that happened before a cell extraction. A headline counting jail deaths may skip the cause, the medical response, and the reality that correctional officers perform CPR, cut people down, and intervene in violence far more than outsiders assume. In a world of doom scrolling and sensationalism, partial facts become “truth” fast, especially when movies, scripted TV, and even inmate podcasts fill in the blanks.

We also push back on the idea that this is just a PR issue. Our goal is light, not spin. That means sharing real context, owning mistakes when they happen, and inviting the people who shape policy to see the real environment: legislators, judges, and community leaders taking honest tours, not staged walkthroughs. If we want smarter conversations about public safety, accountability, and prison reform, we have to start with accurate information.

Subscribe to the Prison Officer Podcast, share this with someone who thinks they already know what prison is like, and leave a review with the biggest myth you want corrected.

What if your first real job at 20—walking onto a men’s medium-security yard—became the foundation for a lifetime of leadership, policy savvy, and humanitarian impact? That’s Judi Simon Garrett’s story, and it upends a lot of what people think they know about prisons, “solitary,” and the people who run complex systems under pressure.

Judi explains why training that centers presence, words, and posture mattered more than keys and cuffs, and how overtime on the toughest posts built credibility that no title could.

Judi breaks down the myths around solitary confinement, reframing it as restrictive housing with services, checks, and human contact. The leap is from prison to a more controlled prison—not from a living room to a dark cell—and sometimes that move protects both staff and the individual. We talk about safety, suicide prevention, and the hard truth that a few people cannot safely live in groups. Then we pull back to language and policy: why lumping everyone in custody under one gentle label hides critical differences, how rehabilitation is a door people must choose to walk through, and why measuring systems only by recidivism misses the point.

We also honor the Bureau of Prisons legacy—from Sanford Bates to modern growth—highlighting professional culture, continuity of leadership, and a mission that kept programs alive even as populations surged. Judi shares candid leadership lessons: humility over ego, influence over authority, context over commands. Finally, we pivot to her current work leading aid for Jewish communities in Ukraine, where logistics, transparency, and storytelling now deliver food, medicine, and care to tens of thousands. It’s a full-circle look at service: macro policy that keeps people safe and micro moments where one family gets the help they need.

If this conversation challenged your assumptions or gave you a clearer view of corrections and leadership, share it with a friend, subscribe for more thoughtful episodes, and leave a review to help others find the show.

In this episode of the Prison Officer Podcast, host Mike Cantrell speaks with Joe Willis, the Deputy Executive Director of the International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association (ILEETA). They discuss the importance of instructor development in law enforcement, the unique offerings of the ILEETA conference, and the value of networking and community among trainers. The conversation highlights the diverse classes available, including certifications, and the significance of emotional intelligence and decision-making in corrections. They also touch on the future of training, including innovations in technology and the importance of collaboration across different sectors of law enforcement.

The nights matter as much as the days. Emerson Hour hits hard with nine-minute talks that spark laughter and tears. Tuesday stacks an author meet-up, whiskey night, and a competitive cornhole tournament. Wednesday shifts to a relaxed lounge and cigar night, and Thursday’s Symbols of Service brings a patch and coin exchange plus trivia to honor identity and build bonds. It’s deliberate by design: connect, learn, reflect, repeat.

We bridge a divide that should not exist: patrol, corrections, and community supervision share core skills. Decision-making under pressure, emotional intelligence, defensive tactics, less lethal judgment, and investigative thinking belong to the entire justice ecosystem. Add the future-ready edge—VR, synthetic training environments, and panels led by researchers and seasoned trainers—and you get practical tools you can apply on day one.

Ready to join a world-class community that raises the bar for training? Subscribe, share this episode with a fellow instructor, and leave a review with the one skill you think trainers overlook most.

Two gym riots. Same tools. Completely different outcomes. That’s the pivot point Robert Sorensen brings to the table as we dive into less lethal tactics, executive buy-in, and the real cost of undertraining in corrections. Robert spent 27 years in government service—lieutenant, emergency preparedness officer, NTOA section chair, and internal affairs special agent—and he’s candid about fear, failure, and what finally worked.

We walk through the practical lessons that turned chaos into control: how inmate mindset dictates munition effectiveness, why tabletop drills and contingency planning decide outcomes, and the simple way to flip leadership from “no” to “go” on modern tools. Robert lays out the case for 40mm accuracy, not as a cool upgrade, but as a liability reducer that protects staff and inmates by making point-of-aim, point-of-impact a reality when it matters most.

From there, we confront today’s front-line threats. Fentanyl exposure has already taken lives, and Robert breaks down decon protocols and sodium-chlorite solutions designed to oxidize powders in seconds—plus a defense cleanse that shrinks OC and PAVA recovery from 30–40 minutes to minutes. Then we go vertical: drones are now the easiest path for contraband into secure facilities. Robert outlines entangling 40mm counter-UAS rounds and autonomous intercept systems that bring down drones with minimal collateral risk, along with the policy gaps and budget choices holding agencies back.

This is a "Best of" from January 16, 2023, Episode 24 in remembrance of Mark Schieber, who passed away on November 17, 2025.

We sit with former MSP assistant warden and historian Mark Schreiber to trace Missouri corrections from segregated tiers and whistle calls to cameras, structured movement, and a museum that fights tornadoes and time. Stories of investigations, integration, inmate culture, and saving archives reveal how people, not just buildings, define the work.

• starting at MSP in 1968, early mentorship and undercover work
• major cases, investigations and use of force evolution
• pay, professionalism and building maximum-security capacity
• integrating a segregated prison and managing factions
• “colonist” inmates, reentry fears and modern life gaps
• cameras as deterrence, logistics during riots and moves
• preserving history: ledgers, photos and museum plans
• EF3 tornado damage, tours recovery and future headquarters
• inmate art, tools like line sticks and Oregon boots
• new book Forgotten Shadows and why people matter most

Five years in, the mission feels sharper than ever: equip correctional professionals with tools, mindset, and purpose that hold up under real pressure. We look back on a year of travel and training, thank the partners who help us serve, and pull together the most impactful moments from conversations that changed how we read risk, teach skills, and define what a good day on the tier looks like.

Greg Williams and Brian Marren break down human behavior pattern recognition in a way that clicks on contact: master the baseline, spot the deviation, act before escalation. From the “watching the watcher” concept to recalibrating your mind at every threshold, their insights show why anticipation beats reaction and why prisons are the ultimate classroom for sense-making. We build on that with practical training talk from Myles Cook, who turns skills into a repeatable process: define the real problem, design adult-learning solutions, and leave with a pitch your leaders can approve and measure. It’s training that sticks because it solves something that hurts.

We also get grounded in purpose with Lt. Col. Dave Grossman, who frames corrections as a life of daily sacrifice in service of public safety. That perspective threads through Pete Bloodworth’s story of earning trust at USP Marion, where open bars and lever locks demanded courage and clarity, and Jimmy Cummings walks us through a can’t-make-this-up escape tale that proves the job will surprise you no matter how many shifts you’ve worked. Along the way, we share updates on my upcoming new books—The Weight of Justice and Echoes of the Ozarks

If these insights help you work smarter and safer, tap follow, share with a teammate, and leave a review on your podcast app. Your support helps more officers find tools that matter and keeps this community learning together.

The job doesn’t wait for your feelings to catch up. That’s why we unpack a clear, practical way to stay steady under pressure—using Stoicism as a daily tool for safer shifts, better decisions, and a healthier mind. We get honest about chaos on the unit, the pull to react fast, and how a few disciplined choices turn tension into control.

We break down the dichotomy of control for correctional work: you can’t dictate inmate choices, staffing levels, or last-minute OT, but you can own your tone, readiness, professionalism, and tactical patience. We explore emotional regulation without suppression, the real difference between responding and reacting, and how firm, fair, and consistent behavior lowers risk and builds trust. You’ll hear why cynicism grows behind the walls, how it erodes judgment, and the Stoic virtues—wisdom, courage, justice, temperance—that keep bitterness from becoming your baseline.

Leadership matters even more when the stakes climb. We look at humility versus ego, setting culture, keeping communication open, and using a Stoic pause before big decisions. We also tackle moral injury: enforcing policies you don’t support, witnessing violence, and carrying stories the public never sees. Stoicism helps separate what’s yours to control from what isn’t, so you can act with integrity inside your lane and protect your mental health over the long haul.

If you want tools you can use on the next shift—reflection prompts, de-escalation habits, and mindset resets—this conversation delivers a field-tested playbook. Listen, share it with a teammate, and tell us one thing you’ll choose to control today. If the show helps, subscribe, leave a review, and pass it on to a partner who needs the Stoic pause.

Leadership in corrections doesn't come from a badge or title—it emerges from integrity, trust, and the willingness to shield your team during difficult times. Matthew Hyde, leadership strategist and author of "From Rookie to Rank," shares his remarkable journey from new correctional officer to CERT Commander without formal rank.

Matthew's story begins with an unexpected path into corrections after brief experiences in college and the National Guard. Within six months of starting at a county jail, he was selected as a Field Training Officer, discovering his natural talent for developing others. The conversation takes a fascinating turn when Matthew discusses becoming the first non-ranking CERT Commander in his department's 25-year history. Rather than attempting to assert dominance over higher-ranking team members, he built trust by acknowledging their experience and seeking their input. "I established that when you walk into the CERT locker room, there is no rank—we're just positions," he explains, detailing how this approach eventually earned him respect across generational divides.

Perhaps most valuable are Matthew's insights on leading through organizational challenges. He candidly shares his experience protecting his team during difficult administrations, emphasizing that when leadership falters from above, frontline supervisors must continue shielding their staff. "You still got to lead. Your people depend on you," he insists, offering practical wisdom for navigating politics while maintaining operational excellence.

Whether you're aspiring to move up the ranks or seeking to improve your leadership effectiveness where you stand, this conversation delivers actionable strategies for building high-performance correctional teams. Matthew's journey demonstrates that in the challenging world of corrections, the most powerful leadership comes not from authorit

I saw a man once walk out of the Missouri State Penitentiary after three decades with a few dollars and no plan. I remember that moment—and this is why I am glad Missouri has set out to build something better. Come behind the scenes with us at the MCA/MPPOA fall conference for a candid tour of what’s actually working: “soft handoffs” between institutions and field teams, mental health continuity that doesn’t collapse on day one, and an immersive training academy built inside a retrofitted prison that turns rookies into capable, confident officers.

We sit down with probation and parole pros and they show how ORAS‑driven case plans tackle real barriers—transportation, IDs, phones, and family support—before release. Their ICTS success stories are honest and hard‑earned: late‑night ER advocacy, field pickups when groups are missed, and quiet graduations that mean someone’s eight months sober and off supervision for good.

Then we head to Cameron, where the Academy for Excellence in Corrections blends daily defensive tactics, cohort rotations, and hands‑on modules in a dedicated training unit filled with authentic property and safe contraband. It’s a modern cadence that builds muscle memory, policy fluency, and the kind of calm that keeps staff safer—and staying longer.

We also open the notebook on today’s threat landscape. A gang SME explains why hybrid gangs and flexible alliances now drive Missouri’s dynamics, why word choice can keep a conversation alive, and how intel shared through the Midwest Gang Investigators Association makes patrol, probation, and custody safer. From motorcycle club rivalries to cross‑agency networking, the theme is collaboration—because corrections holds long‑term insights that street partners need, and training only sticks when it’s tethered to the worksite.

If you care about reentry that lasts, training that works, and safety

Joshua Ryle brings over two decades of corrections experience to this deeply insightful conversation about the hidden psychological patterns that shape corrections culture. From his early days at the Tennessee Department of Corrections to his current role as a training sergeant, Ryle has observed firsthand how the corrections environment creates behavioral patterns that affect officers both professionally and personally.

At the heart of this episode is Ryle's new training program focused on workplace toxicity in corrections. He explains how officers spend their entire workday in a hypervigilant, fight-or-flight state that gradually transforms how they interact with everyone around them. This physiological reality leads to communication challenges, negative filtering, and self-sabotaging behaviors that follow officers home and contribute to concerning wellness statistics in the corrections profession.

What makes Ryle's approach unique is his focus on behavioral science and practical solutions. Rather than simply identifying problems, he provides clear strategies for shifting from self-criticism to self-reflection, improving communication despite technological limitations, and creating a culture where colleagues support rather than undermine each other. Ryle's program has gained such recognition that it's now being implemented nationwide through ARC Tactical.

Whether you work in corrections or are interested in workplace culture transformation, this episode provides valuable insights into how awareness and intentional behavior change can create healthier environments in even the most challenging professions. What does it take to navigate the most dangerous prisons in America while maintaining both safety and humanity? Pete Bloodworth's extraordinary 35-year journey through corrections offers profound insights into this question.

From his early days as a Marine Corps sniper to becoming one of corrections' most influential tactical innovators, Bloodworth's story reveals how military discipline transformed his approach to prison management. "When you actually study the science behind it," he explains about his pioneering work with less-lethal tools, "it's not to say other methods are bad, it's to strengthen the things that are their weaknesses." This pragmatic philosophy guided his development of protocols that revolutionized how officers respond to violent situations throughout the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

Bloodworth's most compelling lessons come from his time at USP Marion, where staff still carried the emotional weight of the murders of three colleagues. There, he learned that leadership means more than tactical expertise—it requires taking responsibility for everyone's safety. "When you're handling it as an officer, you're in the now," he reflects. "When you become the supervisor, the responsibility of being the leader really starts hitting because it's your responsibility to make sure everybody goes home safe."

Throughout our conversation, Bloodworth shares pivotal moments that shaped his understanding of corrections, from managing riots at FCI Phoenix to learning that security is just "one spoke on the wheel" of effective prison management. His later work in private corrections challenges common misconceptions, revealing how these facilities often employ veteran wardens with decades of experience across multiple systems.

Whether you're a corrections professional, considering the field, or simply interested in understanding what happens behind prison walls, this episode offers rare insight into the complex world of modern corrections. Subscribe now to hear more conversations with the professionals who've shaped American corrections.

What makes a truly effective correctional leader? In this thought-provoking episode, Michael Cantrell draws from decades of experience to unpack the three essential qualities officers desperately want from their supervisors: knowledge, willingness, and courage.

Correctional officers seek leaders who possess deep knowledge about policies, case law, and facility operations—creating a foundation of confidence and security. They need supervisors willing to step up during challenging situations and act as shields, protecting their teams from both unreasonable administrative demands and front-line dangers. Most critically, they require leaders with the courage to act decisively when faced with difficult circumstances.

Cantrell explores how successful correctional leaders maintain clear visions that extend beyond themselves, establishing high expectations that motivate their teams toward excellence. He examines how a leader's treatment of others—from subordinates to superiors to inmates—reveals their character and shapes the entire facility's culture.

The conversation delves into how effective leaders combat the pervasive discouragement that can infiltrate correctional work by highlighting purpose and meaning. Even when results aren't immediately visible, the work of maintaining public safety represents a vital contribution to society that leaders must continually reinforce.

Perhaps surprisingly, Cantrell emphasizes the crucial role of appropriate humor in correctional leadership. The ability to find joy amidst challenges creates resilience against the inherent stresses of the profession and builds stronger connections among team members.

Whether you're a seasoned correctional supervisor or aspiring to leadership, this episode provides valuable insights for building stronger, more effective teams in one of society's most challenging environments.

Lieutenant Colonel Dave Grossman brings decades of expertise to this powerful conversation about the psychology of violence, trauma response, and the vital role corrections professionals play in society.

Drawing from his groundbreaking research that shaped books like "On Combat" and "On Killing," Grossman frames correctional officers as society's essential "sheepdogs" – those who willingly face danger so others don't have to. "They are truly God's agent to do good in this world," he reflects, highlighting how corrections work balances public safety with offering second chances at redemption.

The discussion delves deep into practical tools for managing the unique psychological challenges of corrections work. From techniques to prevent PTSD (like controlled breathing exercises and using water as an emotional "reset button") to cognitive behavioral strategies for managing stress reactions, Grossman offers actionable insights born from his extensive research. He emphasizes the importance of self-control: "Nobody ever respects our temper tantrum; they respect our calm."

Most surprising is Grossman's compelling research on sleep deprivation, revealing how inadequate sleep dramatically increases risks for PTSD, depression, and suicide – crucial information for those working overtime and irregular shifts. His practical sleep hygiene recommendations aren't merely for comfort but potentially life-saving interventions for professionals regularly exposed to trauma.

Throughout the conversation runs a thread of purpose and meaning. "Sometimes the greatest love is not to sacrifice your life but to live a life of sacrifice," Grossman notes, validating the profound impact of daily corrections work that often goes unrecognized by society. Whether preventing crime, facilitating rehabilitation, or protecting communities, corrections professionals provide an essential s

What if everything we thought we knew about training correctional officers was based on flawed assumptions? In this eye-opening conversation with Myles Cook, we explore how questioning basic training objectives can transform outcomes across corrections.

Miles brings 15 years of diverse experience spanning corrections, patrol, narcotics, investigations, and academy instruction to tackle one of our profession's most fundamental challenges - training that actually works. With a master's degree, military service, and recognition as one of the International Association of Police Chiefs' 40 Under 40 Award recipients, Myles understands both theory and practical application.

The conversation dives deep into how objective-based training has revolutionized physical fitness programs at his academy, resulting in remarkable 34-38% improvement rates across all fitness metrics. Rather than forcing everyone through identical workouts, their individualized approach ensures every recruit progresses at their optimal pace - creating not just fitter officers, but lifelong healthy habits.

We explore why corrections training often gets stuck in outdated patterns, from focusing on policy over actual ethics to teaching shooting techniques that don't match real-world needs. Myles challenges listeners to look beyond their field for solutions, whether that's learning from athletic coaches for fitness training or competitive shooters for firearms instruction.

Perhaps most valuable is Myles' framework for problem-solving: questioning assumptions, reframing problems, and finding innovative solutions by focusing on the true objective rather than apparent issues. His classic elevator example demonstrates how sometimes the real solution isn't making things faster, but making the experience better.

For any corrections professional who's sat through mandatory training, wonder

What happens when a police officer's career evolves into revolutionizing corrections technology? Alisha Shoates-James takes us on her remarkable journey from patrolling Nashville streets to developing innovative tablet solutions that transform prison environments nationwide.

Drawing from her seven years in law enforcement and extensive experience as a federal probation officer, Shoates-James intimately understands the complexities of our justice system. Her work creating pre-sentence investigation reports for federal judges provided deep insights into the human stories behind criminal cases. "The person is not their lowest moment," she emphasizes, a philosophy that guided her leadership of Tennessee's Probation and Parole Division, where she supervised 1,200 staff responsible for 78,000 individuals reentering society.

Now at Aventive Technologies, Shoates-James pioneers secure tablet solutions that are deployed to 1,200,000 incarcerated individuals in America's prisons and jails. These devices deliver far more than entertainment—they provide critical education, rehabilitative programming, and family connection for incarcerated individuals while creating calmer, safer environments for staff. Correctional administrators report significant reductions in facility tension and behavioral incidents after implementing this technology. "When we introduce tablets into the environment, suddenly everyone has equal access to education," Shoates-James explains, describing how digital learning eliminates waiting lists for limited classroom seats.

When was the last time you heard a positive story about what happens inside America's jails? For most of us, these facilities only make headlines when something goes wrong—an escape, a use-of-force incident, or a facility failure. But as Major Shaun Klucznik reveals in this compelling conversation, corrections professionals save lives, change futures, and demonstrate extraordinary leadership every single day, largely without recognition.

Major Klucznik's remarkable journey from a 19-year-old corrections cadet to the 45th President of the American Jail Association offers a window into how corrections work and builds exceptional leaders. Starting at $5.60 an hour in 1997, he rose through the ranks while witnessing the profession's transformation. His pivotal role in transitioning Hernando County Jail from private to public operation showcases the complex management challenges correctional leaders navigate.

"Every position is a position of leadership," Klucznik emphasizes, noting how correctional officers develop crucial skills managing challenging situations with minimal resources beyond their communication abilities. This crucible of leadership development explains why so many officers become community leaders outside work—coaching youth sports, leading religious programs, and serving their communities.

The conversation delves into the critical role Field Training Officers play in shaping agency culture, the need for transparent communication with the public about both successes and failures, and how leadership philosophies like Jocko Willink's "Extreme Ownership" create empowered, accountable correctional teams. Klucznik also addresses the profession's fight for recognition as first responders, noting correctional officers are first on scene for suicide attempts, medical emergencies, and facility crises.

https://olasmedia.com/blogs/behind-the-bars-beyond-the-badge-the-hidden-struggles-of-correctional-officers

Think the justice system only affects the incarcerated? Think again. In this episode of the How It Really Works series of the Independent Voter Podcast, Chad Peace sits down with corrections expert Michael Cantrell to unpack the hidden mental health crisis facing correctional officers across the country.

Cantrell, a former officer and host of the Prison Officer Podcast, reveals how burnout, PTSD, and emotional isolation have become normalized in a profession that rarely makes the headlines. From training culture to administrative neglect, this conversation peels back the layers on a system that’s breaking the very people we expect to hold it together.

This episode is a must-listen for anyone serious about justice reform—and it’s just one chapter in a much bigger story.

Brian Antonelli, known throughout corrections as "the fixer," pulls back the curtain on what it takes to restore order in some of America's most challenging prisons. Drawing from 32 years of distinguished service in federal and state corrections, Antonelli shares candid stories about transforming troubled facilities like USP Hazleton, where he arrived shortly after high-profile homicides to implement sweeping reforms.

The conversation takes us through Antonelli's remarkable journey from Air Force security forces to becoming a nationally recognized correctional leader. With refreshing honesty, he discusses the realities of prison management – from dealing with gang violence and homicides over trivial debts to the delicate balance of pushing for reform without alienating staff. His experiences activating new facilities, managing high-security inmates, and designing emergency response protocols provide a masterclass in correctional leadership.

What sets this episode apart is Antonelli's unique perspective on physical discipline as a foundation for leadership. As both a black belt in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and a competitive powerlifter, he explains how martial arts training creates officers who make better decisions under pressure: "I think one of the biggest things that jiu-jitsu gives you is the ability to make tough decisions in the worst possible scenarios." This philosophy extends to his management approach, where he advocates empowering staff to develop solutions rather than micromanaging from above.

The conversation delves into practical leadership frameworks, including the OODA loop for decision-making and techniques for tactfully influencing superiors when necessary. Antonelli's guiding principle—"You can't have programming without discipline, order, and control"—resonates throughout as he explains his counterinsurgency-inspired "Seize Clear, Build, Hold" mod

The shocking disparity between training requirements—four weeks to become a correctional officer versus sixteen weeks to become a hairdresser in Washington State—highlights a systemic problem in how we prepare staff to handle some of society's most challenging individuals. Fosnott describes his earliest experiences, including being thrown into supervising inmates during a power outage with zero training, and how these moments shaped his understanding of corrections as a profession requiring specialized skills and knowledge.

As founder of ARC Tactical (Automatic Response Concepts) and director of training with Safe Restraints Inc., Fasnacht has developed innovative approaches to cell extractions, transport procedures, and restraint techniques that prioritize safety for both officers and inmates. His company's training programs have reached correctional facilities across America and internationally, including the United Arab Emirates and Australia, demonstrating the universal need for better tactical preparation in correctional settings.

Whether you're a correctional professional looking to enhance your skills, an administrator seeking to improve your department's safety record, or simply interested in understanding the complex world behind the walls, this episode offers valuable insights into the specialized knowledge required to work effectively in one of society's most demanding environments.

Michael Cantrell returns with a passionate exploration of the evolving corrections landscape, sharing significant professional milestones while introducing his upcoming new book, "Power Skills: Emotional Intelligence and Soft Skills for Correctional Officers, Public Service, and Beyond."

The episode begins with exciting news about Cantrell's appointment to the Advisory Board on Corrections for the International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association (ILEETA). This significant development represents a deliberate effort to bring corrections expertise into an organization that has traditionally focused on law enforcement training. Through panel discussions and networking at the ILEETA conference, Cantrell helped identify critical training needs in corrections, including leadership and Correctional Training Officer (CTO) development, specifically designed for correctional environments and based on a new CTE (Coach - Train - Evaluate).

At the heart of this episode is Cantrell's compelling discussion of his upcoming book on emotional intelligence and soft skills. He shares how his perspective transformed after hearing these capabilities described as "superpowers" rather than merely empathetic exercises. Through personal stories and practical examples, Cantrell breaks down the four components of emotional intelligence: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management.

Cantrell challenges listeners to recognize that every correctional officer is a leader who can positively influence workplace culture. He emphasizes that communication significantly impacts perceptions of professionalism, whether through face-to-face interactions, emails, or other channels.

Ready to transform your effectiveness as a corrections professional? Listen now to discover the "Power Skills" that can elevate your career and improve workplace cu

From the corridors of military prisons to the unique challenges of civilian life, our guest Jimmy Cummings shares an extraordinary journey filled with unexpected twists and turns. A retired Marine with a commanding presence in military corrections, Jimmy opens up about his early struggles in Scranton, Pennsylvania, that led him to the Marines, meeting his wife in Okinawa, and the trials of transitioning back to civilian life—only to find his way back to the Corps. His insights offer a rare glimpse into a world of discipline, camaraderie, and the often-overlooked aspects of military life.

Our conversation takes a thought-provoking turn as we discuss the nuances of the military justice system, touching on court-martials, prisoner rehabilitation, and the transformative power of correctional custody programs. Jimmy's personal anecdotes about leading these programs, both in the U.S. and Japan, shed light on their potential to change lives.

Ever wondered what it takes to manage a county jail? Join me, Michael Cantrell, as I sit down with Justin Hall, the elected jailer from Nelson County, Kentucky, who has spent nearly two decades in the corrections field. We'll uncover how he navigated his way from the Hardin County Detention Center to overseeing operations in his hometown. Learn about innovative technologies like biometric sensors that help monitor inmate health and the relentless battle against contraband. Justin and I also examine Kentucky's unique law enforcement structure, where jailers and sheriffs operate independently, a system rooted in history to prevent corruption.

Justin reveals the distinctive hurdles jails face compared to prisons, especially when welcoming inmates under the influence, and how he's using his local roots to effect change. We'll also discuss opportunities for inmate employment and rehabilitation programs designed to reduce recidivism, helping inmates transition back into society.

What if the key to managing conflicts in corrections is as simple as mastering the art of listening? Join us as we examine the evolution of de-escalation techniques, starting from the era of "verbal judo" to contemporary methods centered on active listening and emotional regulation. You'll learn why truly hearing and understanding the other person can be transformative, not just in corrections but also in law enforcement, nursing, and dispatch roles. We underscore the critical role of listening in managing tensions and preventing conflicts.

Have you ever wondered if less-lethal and non-lethal tools like Pepperball can be effective forms of de-escalation? Sometimes the mere presence of a non-lethal system or the professional appearance of a respected correctional officer is all that is needed.

This episode weighs the effectiveness of traditional force versus modern de-escalation tactics, emphasizing the importance of attempting de-escalation first to mitigate injuries and liabilities. Discover how strategic, less confrontational approaches can be game-changers in handling disruptive inmates.

Ever wondered how much of what you've heard about prison life is actually true? Mike Cantrell pulls back the curtain on the misconceptions that society holds about prisons and their inmates. Through a personal recount of a misguided community meeting, he reveals how families are often manipulated by prisoners who exaggerate their hardships. From tales of inadequate food and clothing to the emotional tug-of-war for financial support, Mike sets the record straight on the stark differences between low-security camps and higher-security prisons.

The darker side of prison life is fraught with manipulation and deceit, and Mike doesn't shy away from these harsh realities. He dives into the sophisticated tactics inmates use to smuggle contraband and manipulate multiple women for financial gain.

Can leadership failures create a breeding ground for misconduct in correctional facilities?

In this episode of the Prison Officer Podcast, we confront this critical question head-on. Through the lens of Stanley Milgram's famous 1963 obedience study, we unravel the often unseen dynamics of authority in corrections, exploring when and how the duty to intervene should override blind obedience. Recent cases of systemic leadership breakdowns are scrutinized, revealing how these lapses can foster environments where illegal and immoral actions flourish. I discuss the emotional rollercoaster faced by both staff and inmates during crises and why intervention is as crucial as physical action in preventing escalation.

A prison is a place of violence. Pretty quickly, as they begin their sentence inside, other inmates categorize each other as Predator or Prey. The Hunter or the Hunted. Their role is determined by whether or not they have the strength to stand up against the other inmates. Will they run and hide in their cell, or will they stand and fight? Will they be abused, or will they be the abuser? Lion or antelope, it’s the choice most have in a violent system.

Staff are often looked at the same way. Are you the Hunter or are you the Prey. Success for the prey is measured by just living another day. "Eight and the gate." But a lack of respect for the other predators makes you unaware, unprepared, and nothing more than a person to be used and manipulated. Prison is not the place to live unaware…

Success for the Hunter is a successful hunt. But calling an officer a predator is not like calling an inmate a predator. An officer does not prey on inmates. An officer who is a Hunter is respected for their skills and their abilities. Remember, most of the time a lion lives alongside the antelope. The antelope keep a respectful distance but they are not living in constant fear of the lion. The lion doesn’t have anything to prove, he knows he is King. He knows he is an apex predator, and walks comfortably in his surroundings, not unaware, but comfortable with his skills.

His four decades in the Bureau of Prisons have equipped him with a library of stories, and in our latest episode, Art's candid reflections peel back the curtain on the daily grind of corrections work, from the first clang of the prison doors to the intricate challenges of managing inmate programs. His tales are not just a narrative of personal growth within the Bureau but a masterclass on the evolution of federal prison systems and the strategic navigation of career progression within such a demanding field.

The landscape of correctional work is fraught with complexities, and Art doesn't shy away from discussing the nuances of his profession. He delves into the transformation of work programs, and the unique considerations when overseeing diverse inmate populations. Glen's reflections on the internal battles correctional officers face—such as finding drugs and corruption within their ranks—are eye-opening. These revelations highlight the lesser-known aspects of prison life and the constant vigilance required to uphold the law within its walls. The discussion around the corruption he witnessed, and the challenges it posed to his own moral compass, underscores the complexities of working in corrections.

After having this discussion over and over, I finally decided I am going to share my thoughts in a podcast about the use of restrictive housing. I have worked and seen the good, bad, and ugly. At the end of the day though, restrictive housing is necessary! I agree that many of our inmates need programming that prepares them for the outside world. I also agree that many of our inmates are criminal thugs who will not be changed with classes, bribes, or personal freedom. Two different groups of inmates. The problem is - these are two different conversations. Two different groups of social needs. Not all Inmates are Created Equal!

A recent Facebook post was highlighting the fact a citizen brought in pizza for the inmates and staff...I could hardly believe the responses from citizens and staff. Be careful, I will probably hurt somebody's feelings with my commentary.

There are so many things wrong with this scenario, from staff manipulation, to contraband introduction, to an attitude of"It's no big deal!" and "But, they deserve it, they were good." I take a very honest look at this through the eyes of a correctional officer and highlight why this and inmate fund-raiders are a bad idea for staff and security.

I also have a few words about another post that said, "Rehabilitation is part of a Correctional Officers' job."

The author also states that research has found that up to 70 percent of people experience positive psychological growth from difficult times. Lindsay was the first person I thought about when I wanted to have a conversation about whether or not growth can rise from trauma.

I connected with him on LinkedIn after reading several of his posts on leadership, training, and taking care of your staff. His posts really resonated with me and I wanted to hear more about his personal views on corrections, staff, and leadership.

He began his career as a jailer in Ft. Worth Texas, he then became a correctional officer with the State of Florida before hiring on with the Department of Justice Bureau of Prisons. Associate Warden Fredericks assumed positions of greater responsibility throughout each of his moves and most recently served as the Associate Warden of Operations at Broad River CI. Today’s guest is David Skarbek, an Associate Professor of Political Science and Political Economy at Brown University. He is also the author of two books:

The Social Order of the Underworld: How Prison Gangs Govern the American Penal System

The Puzzle of Prison Order: Why Life Behind Bars Varies Around the World

When many people outside the prison system think of prison gangs, they think of chaotic bands of violent, racist thugs. Few people think of gangs as sophisticated organizations (often with elaborate written constitutions) that regulate the social and economic life of the prison. Yet as David argues, gangs form to create order among outlaws, producing alternative governance institutions to facilitate their illegal activity. David studies the political economy of these gangs within our prisons globally and his works have appeared in both economics and political science journals. If you haven’t read them yet, his books are also a great reference for all correctional officers.

Running a podcast takes a lot of time. Running a good one takes even more...:-)

I have been asked a lot to provide more content but with my schedule as an Instructor, and editing, recording, and scheduling guests, I just haven't had much time.

There has been a lot of interest from schools, academies, and agencies that really enjoy some of the basic correctional officer subjects we have covered on this podcast.

So, in order to try to provide more content and provide some episodes on skills correctional rookies need (and a refresher for some of the veterans), The Prison Officer Podcast will begin publishing short (10-15 minute) skill-based episodes on the off weeks. Right now I have episodes every other week (usually on Monday). These episodes will be released on Mondays in between the full episodes.

In this episode of The Basics we talk about counts and counting.

This content will be free, just like the podcast. No subscription. Nothing to Join. Although, if you really like what we do, I would love for you to Buy Me a Cup of Coffee

Have a great day!

Since the beginning of law enforcement and corrections, officers have had to verbally try and change the actions of others to prevent force from being used to control the situation. There have always been those who could communicate in this manner well. Those officers were able to get their point across without resorting to force. Some were able to do it by helping the person work through the logical reasons they should or shouldn’t continue their actions or behavior. Other officers had that glint in their eye that struck fear in the mind of others and alluded to the unpleasant possibilities of what could happen if they stayed their course. I think I was able to use a little of both.

But when the outcome is force of any kind, there has also always been a side that believes the fault lies with the officer for not giving them a chance, for not talking them out of it, for not shooting them in the foot instead of the chest when they attacked you. They do not believe in force for any reason.

Like everything else in life, the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Not every incident needs to be met with force nor can every incident be solved through verbal communication alone.

I do believe that every incident can be improved with de-escalation.

You know, whenever the discussion of the roughest, toughest prisons comes up, there are several names that come to everyone’s mind…Alcatraz, Sing Sing, Leavenworth, Joliet, and of course San Quentin.

Opened in 1852, San Quentin State Prison in California is one of those violent prisons that has become part of our national culture.  A prison that currently houses more than 3300 inmates (700 of those in the prison’s Condemned Unit), San Quentin has been immortalized in movies, TV, literature, and even a Johnny Cash song.

My guest today is Ron, who spent a career working at San Quentin State Prison and he is here today to tell us his story.

A cartoon I once saw showed a sinking boat with sailors in it.  One end is going underwater, and a couple of sailors are bailing as fast as they can to no avail.  The other end of the boat is still out of the water and the characters on the other end are saying, “I’m glad it’s not our end of the boat that is sinking."

Wake up, people! It’s the same boat, if one end sinks the whole boat sinks.

There is a new generation of correctional officers coming on board.  They bring a different skill set to the table, and they are not like the generations before them.  Nor should they be.  But, if they don't pick up the mantle, there is nobody else.  In this episode, I discuss the different generations, the old and the new.  The differing expectations, and what needs to be done to get our prisons staffed with great prison officers.

Hello and welcome The Prison Officer Podcast.  My name is Michael Cantrell and I spent over 28 years working in some of this country’s toughest prisons.

Most of you don’t know, but over 500,000 people work in the jails, correctional centers and prisons in the United States.  Those correctional workers walk into a manmade hell each day and face some of the toughest criminals and most violent mental health inmates the U.S. has to offer.  They spend eight or more hours a day forgotten by the society that depends on them.  There will be no hero’s welcome for the lives they save today.  There will be no fanfare or parades.  Instead they will have feces thrown at them and they will wade through blood to prevent the next suicide or stabbing on their watch.

If they do their job right today, no one will know.  If they do it wrong, it will be front page headlines tomorrow.

When the shift is over, they will be expected to drive home and act just like everyone else.  To forget the images of killing, rape, blood and violence that rattle around in their mind.  To look at their wife and kids with love, and not let them know that evil does really exist.

The Prison Officer Podcast is my way to have a conversation about these officers and their resilience and leadership, their sense of duty and their successes.

Vicki White, a jail supervisor, helps a convicted murderer escape from an Alabama jail.  Mexican Mafia member and convicted murderer, Gonzalo Lopez managed to free himself from restraints, break out of a transport cage and attack the driver of the prison bus he was in.

If you have looked in the news lately, there seems to be an epidemic of escapes.  So what are the circumstances that allow inmates to escape?  More importantly, how do we stop escapes from happening?

In this episode, we will talk about inmate manipulation, security procedures, and staff complacency, and discuss how these areas can make or break the security of any prison.

Much like the current story of Vicki White and convicted murderer Casey White, Dorr helped John Manard escape from custody on February 12, 2006, in a dog crate and the two lived together in a cabin for 12 days until their capture and arrest in Tennessee.   Married mother of two, Toby Dorr (Young at the time) was running a dog program at a Kansas prison when she met inmate John Manard through the dog program and love blossomed between the two,

She would eventually spend 27 months in prison for her crime, but she decided to put her time into helping others who felt so desperate to escape the trauma in their lives, that they would do anything.

She joins us on this podcast to discuss how she was manipulated, fell in love, and eventually made the decision to help a convicted murderer escape from prison.

I have lost friends and co-workers to staff manipulation many times over my career.  With Tony's help maybe we can get some insight into how this pattern of behavior can be stopped before it's too late.

It's early Christmas morning here at our house and I just wanted to take a minute and say Merry Christmas.  Whether you are lucky enough to have the day off and get to spend it with your family, or if you are working a shift (or two) in one of the prisons, jails, or correctional centers around the world.  I just wanted to remind you that what you do is appreciated.

I spent many Christmas’s and other holidays working inside, and despite everything, I do have some good memories of those times.  Maybe the inmates would try a little harder, or maybe the staff was in a better mood, or maybe everybody was just a little distracted by the decorations, or change in schedules for the holidays.  Whatever the reason, holidays tended to be a pretty good day to work in a prison…as good days go anyway.

Retirement Day.  For most of us, this is a once in a lifetime event.  The one day most of us inside spend our shifts dreaming about.  When we don’t have to walk past those grills.  When we don’t have to spend 8 hours trying not to notice the smell of urine.  Maybe we can even let our guard down just a little with those around us and enjoy a little less stress in our lives.

Well, October 24 was that day.  I am now a retiree from the Federal Bureau of Prisons.  After 21 years with the BOP and 8 years with the State of Missouri I walked out the front door for the last time.  I could have still gone a few more years, but as I have heard many retiree say before, “you know when it is time.”

I saw a Facebook post the other day from the Missouri Patriot Guard and the VFW who were honoring a local veteran with a motorcycle ”drive by” to celebrate the milestone of him turning 100 years old on September 9 of this year.

Robert “Bob” Burks, served in the US Navy during World War II from 1942 – 1945.  He was in college at the time of the Pearl Harbor attack and enlisted for service shortly thereafter. He served as a Pharmacist Mate in the Pacific Theater and was interestingly “loaned” to the United States Marine Corps on the island of Samoa to function as a medic helping treat soldiers involved in the brutal campaign to recover the South Pacific islands taken by the Japanese early in the war. Bob was able to return 25 years ago to be reunited with the people of Samoa and be honored accordingly.

You know, I love our veterans and it was great to read Bob‘s story about his heroic service in the Pacific.  As I continued to read, at the bottom of the post, almost as an afterthought was written “After his military service, his work included 31 years as a guard at the Federal Medical Facility in Springfield.”  I myself worked at the United States Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Springfield, MO for 14 years.  Thirty-one years as a guard at USMCFP Springfield is an absolutely amazing feat all by itself.

I reached out to the organizers to make contact with Mr. Burks and I am extremely happy to tell you that in today’s episode we are going to talk with Mr. Burks and hear about his amazing life and his time as a prison officer.

One in five Americans works nontraditional hours, including the many staff working the off shifts in our prisons.  Someone has to be there.  Although many say they enjoy these off-shifts, it affects them.  It affects their families.  It affects their mental and physical health.

I have worked in Corrections for more than 28 years.  Twenty-two of those years included shift work.  One of the things I found the most challenging over the years is working midnight shifts.  I am okay with evening shift (although my it kills your family time), but midnight shifts kicked my ass.

In this episode, I am going to cover what I believe are the basics of working Restrictive Housing.  Restrictive Housing is the newest catch-phrase that refers to “lock-down.”  Some places call it Segregation, the Hole, or the SHU (Special Housing Unit).  Whatever it is called where you work, it is the lock-down housing unit for those inmates who either refuse to follow the rules of the open yard, or those inmates who have “checked-in” from fear or the debts they have accumulated.  Many of these  basics are also relevant to mental health and high security units.

So what does it take to work Segregation?

Leave a comment on Facebook and let us know what you think are the basics of working Seg.

The last few months have changed the way all of us see the world around us.  The COVID-19 Pandemic, the quarantine, the masks, the death of George Floyd, the anti-police backlash that followed, the riots, the looting, it’s a lot of stress on everyone.  So, this episode I want to talk about this unprecedented level of toxic stress we are all living in.  How we can be resilient and take care of each other as we make it through these challenges.

In this episode, I am going to answer several of the questions this podcast has generated since it started.  In just less than 3 months, this podcast has grown to over 1300 downloads, and hundreds of Facebook likes.  But, it has also generated a lot of questions such as:

  • What made you want to start a podcast about prison?
  • What positive things did you do outside of prison to stay healthy?
  • Are you going to have a show dedicated to the women who work in Corrections?
  • Are you going to interview inmates on this show?

People are curious about where this is podcast headed and why I started it, so let's see if I can find an answer for some of theses inquiring minds.

In this episode, I have invited Dr. Jaclyn Brandhorst as a guest.  She has been researching  stress, employee assistance programs, and PTSD in a correctional setting.  She has been impacted herself by correctional stress, because she grew up with it.  I know, because she is my daughter.

After you listen to this episode, if you would like to contact Jaclyn, and share your stories and help Jaclyn with her research, feel free to reach out to brandhorst@ucmo.edu

In this episode, I want to talk to the rookies and the soon to be rookies out there.  You applied for the job, you’ve been through the academy, and now you are working a housing unit as a Correctional Officer.  You look around and see a lot of other officers who seem comfortable in what they do, but how do you become a good Correctional Officer?  Start by being a good rookie.  I’m going to share what I feel are the four  golden rules that will take you from being a rookie, to being a solid correctional officer

In this episode, I want to talk about a taboo subject in Corrections.  Something that happens to everyone who works in Corrections in one form or another, yet it is rarely admitted or discussed openly.   Manipulation.

Staff manipulation comes in two forms, one is when inmates “get over” on the rules.  The other is when a staff member is corrupted by inmates to do the unthinkable.

In this podcast we talk about why inmates manipulate us, how they manipulate us and how to stop them

One of the things I have learned working in prison is just how much leadership matters.  Whether it is the way you lead your  team, your housing unit or just an inmate work detail.  Leadership matters.  What I was thinking about this week is how we as leaders handle our mistakes.

This is the first of many episodes where I will focus on Correctional Leadership.

An article came out this week on ESPN about UFC fighter Anthony Smith.  A UFC heavyweight, he is probably one of the most in shape people you could meet.  That’s why his comments about fighting an intruder in his house are enlightening.  Smith described the fight as “terrifying” and “one of the toughest fights he has ever had.”  I will argue that it was not one of the toughest fights he has ever had, it was one of the toughest fight he was not mentally prepared for.  He has been in many fights.  What he had never experienced was “being attacked” by another human being.
