After giving us a full dose of Offer featuring Nigerian rap titan Vector, rising rap sensation PDSTRN has released his latest single IDAN, featuring renowned producer Sholz. The track, whose title translates to BOSS in Yoruba, showcases PDSTRN‘s dynamic lyrical prowess and distinctive Naija-grade bounce. In IDAN, PDSTRN weaves a compelling narrative of his boss’s lifestyle, effortlessly blending themes of business acumen and playful extravagance, underscored by a beat that is both infectious and unmistakably Nigerian.
Clocking in at just over three minutes, IDAN boasts a bouncy, unmistakably Naija-grade groove that sets the stage for PDSTRN‘s lyrical mastery. The track captivates listeners with its infectious beat, but it’s PDSTRN‘s impeccable cadence and storytelling that truly stand out. Throughout the song, he deftly explores themes of lust, thrill, ego, and bravado, painting a vivid picture of the allure and dangers of street credibility. His world in IDAN is both personal and relatable, making the track a compelling listen from start to finish.
As the song draws to a close, a Yoruba ballad that loosely translates to “Money is the head over problem, when it gets to the mouth of problem…problem is satisfied,” adds a powerful touch. Performed excellently by PDSTRN and guest vocalists, this ending solidifies IDAN as a profound musical experience. The collaboration with Sholz has resulted in a track that not only highlights PDSTRN‘s versatility but also his ability to create music that resonates deeply with audiences.

Therefore, this song is all about embracing and championing who we are, regardless.”
Produced by a collaborative dream team that includes superstar Lenny Kravitz as executive producer and Fela Kuti and Egypt 80’s original producer Sodi Marciszewer as artistic producer, Dey delivers a timeless fusion of sounds. Almost six years after releasing her breakout single, 2018’s Mr Rebel, Nigerian superstar Tems delivers her debut LP, Born in the Wild. Of course, that interim has been characterised by a trajectory that’s trended upward at almost every turn. From her acclaimed 2020 debut EP For Broken Ears to global megahit collaborations with Wizkid (and later Justin Bieber) on Essence and Drake on Fountains to 2021’s sophomore EP, If Orange Was a Place, to appearances on 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack (including songwriting credits for Rihanna’s Lift Me Up) and Beyoncé’s RENAISSANCE and a Grammy win for Future and Drake’s Wait for U in 2023—the alté-R&B star has experienced an almost exponential rise.
That kind of journey is part of what makes Born in the Wild all the more captivating. Over 18 tracks, Tems cracks open her journal through those career highs, and reveals how the person behind them grappled with it all. “I had to step back a bit, to check in with myself,” Tems (Temilade Openiyi) tells Apple Music, “and also just find healing from all the trauma and everything I experienced before ‘Tems’. I think I had to unlearn a lot of things. This album is just a new way of me expressing myself, while still centring who I am in it.” Here, she works through moments of feeling like an impostor, of rebuilding her self-confidence, of learning the ins and outs of relationships and of learning to trust herself. Don’t read that as insecure, however—this is the journal of someone who’s done the work, and who’s fully ready to embrace the next chapter.
It’s all brought to life through Tems’ usual brand of honest, mature storytelling—and here, as ever, the centrepiece remains a distinctive voice that simultaneously balances multiple layers of raw, delicate emotion and a natural, unforced ease. That reflective songwriting shows a sonic maturity that’s unrestricted by genre: She traverses from R&B (Burning) to fusions of Afrobeats and Amapiano (Get It Right), balanced with celebrations of culture and heritage, like her reimagined version of Seyi Sodimu’s 1997 hit, the breezy Love Me JeJe. Below, Tems talks through these and more key tracks from Born in the Wild.
Born in the Wild
“‘Born in the Wild’ is a story of transformation from a cocoon to a butterfly. It speaks on surviving a mental wilderness that comes with life, and coming to a place where one can thrive. It’s about accepting oneself, and embodying the woman I was born to be. It shows the different dimensions of who Tems is, and her journey from a cub to a lioness.”
Burning
“‘Burning’ is about the feelings I felt when I first started getting popular as Tems. I didn’t really understand what was happening, and everything was happening so fast. And it’s about me looking back on that time and realising that we are all going through something. We all have our internal battles. We all have the things that we struggle with, our triggers. And ‘Burning’ is really about understanding that I have my triggers too, and now I know that I’m not alone. And there’s many people that have felt the way I do about not wanting to be seen, not really being used to attention, and people trying to take advantage of you in many different ways.”
Love Me JeJe
“‘Love Me JeJe’ is a sweet, happy song about finding unconditional love. The joy of finding a love that doesn’t run out and not settling for anything else. Just basking in the sun, basking in that unconditional type of love.”
Get It Right (feat. Asake)
“This is just about a conversation between two people and one is saying, ‘I know you’re scared, but if you do me right, I always got your back, because that’s who I am.’ And it’s just about two people feeling each other and wanting to explore more.”
Unfortunate
“‘Unfortunate’ is about realising that the person that you put your trust in isn’t worth your time. And also being thankful that the person showed themselves early, and the person disappointed you. And it’s basically finding the good in the bad. This was a disappointment, but it is actually great that it was, because it means that I’m winning, and I’m going to overcome this, and I don’t need to be with you anymore. It is a blessing that I’m not obligated by any means to stay with you, and it’s a blessing that I’m not with you.”
Forever
“Forever is about the aftermath of a breakup, when the guy comes circling back, and it’s coming from a place of healing, it’s coming from a place of ‘I’ve moved on already, but it’s interesting to see you scramble because I’m moving on. It’s the desperation for me from you. I love that you are so desperate to get me back you’re always checking for me, stalking me, checking for what I’m doing, and it’s really intriguing and fascinating to see.’”
Free Fall (feat. J. Cole)
“This is about, after you fell in love with someone, they fell in love too. It was great until you realise that you both were new to it, and they didn’t really know what to do in the relationship. It’s about knowing, ‘If I stay, I’m going to be drained,’ and knowing your limits and setting your boundaries. It’s basically reflecting on all of that. Reflecting on the fact that I had to go, because if I didn’t go, it would have been detrimental.”
Me & U
“‘Me & U’ is about reconnecting with God. It’s a new conversation. It’s about reconnecting with your inner child and the truth. It’s about now being honest with yourself about who you are, and about having faith that everything is going to be okay, as long as you believe.”
You in My Face
“‘You in My Face’ is a conversation with the inner me, the inner child, and it’s about finding peace within, and also hoping that I don’t get lost again.”

“In my head, I was looking at this album like a TV show,” Nigerian singer Ayra Starr tells Apple Music about her sophomore album The Year I Turned 21. “Every song is an episode.” Structured as a series of life’s key moments, the album features the sonic adventures and lyrical savvy that saw Starr’s debut album, 2021’s 19 & Dangerous, set Afropop streaming records.
Brimming with self-confidence and unvarnished introspection, The Year I Turned 21 covers a range of topics, from the fear of failure, newfound love, growing fame and fortune, and gender positivity to parental loss, intimacy, and mental wellbeing.
Starr blends R&B and Afropop with stylistic borrowings from Latin pop, Jamaican dancehall, Nigerian highlife, gospel, and more. Dem Never Know I Kala,” she sings on “Commas.” The phrase (a mixture of pidgin and Yoruba, which means being underestimated based on looks) shows a keenness for being accessible, a theme explored throughout the album. Combinations of languages and instrumentals abound, buoyed by disparate samples that include ’70s R&B, a field recording, and taped confessions from family members.
Production was provided by notable hitmakers that include LONDON, P2J, P-Prime, and Starr’s brother and frequent songwriting collaborator, Milar. The main attraction, however, remains Starr’s singing voice, which has grown along with her stardom. “This album has made me who I am now,” she explains. “It was proper character development.”
Here, she talks through the album, track by track.
Birds Sing of Money
“My brother, who is a music video director, paid a guy to just sing a Fuji song about me, which is in the beginning of ‘Birds Sing of Money.’ This was a day after I released my first EP, as a gift. And the guy was just hyping me up. That’s a very Yoruba thing.”
Goodbye (Warm Up) (with Asake)
“This is one of my favorite tracks I’ve ever recorded. Ever. Before I sent it to Asake, I wasn’t even sure if he was going to like the song. He was like, ‘OK Ayra, give me some time.’ He sent me his verse in two days. I was like, ‘Oh, this is sounding good.’”
Commas
“‘Commas’ is about how God has blessed me and I’m really grateful for where I am in life and where I’m about to go. I’m grateful for just even being present in this moment and being alive. I feel like that’s what has brought me here, my gratitude and the continuous hard work I will keep putting into this job. God is good.”
Woman Commando (with Anitta & Coco Jones)
“‘Woman Commando’ is such an Afrobeats/amapiano banger in a way, because of the log drums, and I wanted different perspectives. I’ve been watching Coco Jones since I was 12 on Disney’s Let It Shine. I sent her a different song, which she loved, but she was like, ‘Ayra, I want to be on your Afrobeats vibe,’ and I was like, ‘Say less.’ Anitta is such an amazing musician and I really just knew that I wanted to go for that Latin element. Her verse is perfect.”
Control
“Is relinquishing control the same as submission? It depends on how the listener, the audience wants to take it. The lyric goes: ‘I’m lit tonight/You know my lips lie.’ I want you to take control. I want you to be the man. Do your thing. It’s not really about submission, it’s more like I’m giving you hints—take control.”
Lagos Love Story
“‘Lagos Love Story’ is about being in a very happy state of mind. We have that moment where we are so happy, [that] it starts to feel wrong. It starts to feel like, ‘I feel guilty for being this happy.’ You kind of feel relieved when something bad happens, because you’re not used to that amount of happiness. That’s what the song is about: being in a very high state of happiness.”
Rhythm & Blues
“When I released ‘Rhythm & Blues’ [in 2023], I didn’t know if it was the right time. The headspace I was in was a lot of work. I remember recording this song for the first time and how beautiful it was. Also, there is a lyric that goes, ‘My jigga, my muse,’ which I wrote because you don’t expect girl singers to refer to a male love interest as a muse.”
21
“The first demo of ’21’ was a 21st birthday gift from a friend. Writing it, I was kind of stuck because I don’t really know how to write about myself. I’m really good at writing about other people and the TV shows I watch and movies I watch, but never myself. So this album was the first time I actually put myself out there and learned how to write by myself.”
Last Heartbreak Song (with GIVĒON)
“GIVĒON’s verse made me cry the first time I heard it; I was so happy. I’ve always wanted to see what we would sound like together, because we both have really low range. GIVĒON came with the most perfect perspective, because anybody that has been in an argument with a man, or any man that’s been arguing with a girl, would know [that] ‘Last Heartbreak Song’ is literally the dynamic.”
Bad Vibes (with Seyi Vibez)
“Translating Yoruba to English is so annoying sometimes because it doesn’t just hit the same in English. In the hook, the lyric in Yoruba means ‘Don’t poke me in my eye or don‘t hit me in my eye. I don’t break. I’m good.’ It’s an idiom, right? For the guest feature, I wanted a perspective from somebody that would understand what I was trying to do with the song. I felt like that with Seyi Vibez, we sound amazing together.”
Orun
“‘Orun’ is a highlife song and a juxtaposition of a puzzle of life. Highlife songs are usually known for being joyful and you want to dance to it. But with ‘Orun,’ it’s kind of different because I’m talking about mental health and depression.”
Jazzy’s Song
“I’ve been wanting to sample a Don Jazzy production [Wande Coal’s 2009 single ‘You Bad (feat. D’banj)’] for so long and I’m glad I did. The title ‘Jazzy’s Song’ shows my respect for him and how much I admire him as a person, as an artist, and as a musician.”
1942 (with Milar)
“This song is introspective and so vulnerable. I’ve been working for so long, and for the first time in my life, I took a vacation on my birthday. I remember being in the pool with a bottle of 1942 tequila, and I was like, ‘Wow, this moment makes everything all worth it.’ After all the time we’ve put into this job, all the hard work, everything I’ve done, that moment of relaxing in that villa, overlooking the ocean, made everything worth it.”
The Kids Are Alright
“Turning 21 is a big [moment] and you start to notice things—like certain behavioral patterns are reflections of certain childhood trauma, or things that you’ve gone through in the past. I noticed that I had not really mourned the death and the loss of my father, and it was something I was holding at the back of my head.”
Santa (with Rvssian & Rauw Alejandro)
“I’ve been a big fan of Rvssian for so long, and we’ve been wanting to work [together] for so long. I recorded the verse and was made to sing in Spanish, literally. It’s so crazy that, once it drops, it becomes this global song, and I’m so happy.”

In the wake of the passing of beloved rapper and singer MohBad in 2023, close friend and collaborator Bella Shmurda played a critical role in honouring the memory of the musician whose soulful interpretation of street-pop had captured popular imagination. Shmurda had first connected with MohBad years prior, as they both navigated Lagos’ labyrinthine underground street-pop music scene, developing a tight-knit bond that would provide a haven for both singers on several occasions throughout their careers.
My Brother, released less than a month after the death of MohBad, succinctly captured the intensity of Shmurda’s hurt at the passing of his dear friend and the depth of the shared experiences that formed the bedrock of their friendship. Addressing these feelings more intently, R2 Sept 12, Shmurda’s first project since 2023’s DND, reverberates with the singer’s thoughts on death’s fickleness, the jarring confusion of a loved one being taken so suddenly and trying to work through what fond memories are left while fighting off a never-ending sense of loss.
The EP was envisioned as a cogent dispatch before a more in-depth album release on the first anniversary of MohBad’s passing. Therefore, R2 Sept 12 is an unflinching portrait of the grieving process and, even though MohBad is only referenced directly on My Brother, the sum of its five songs bear witness to his presence and what he meant to Shmurda. “I just dey lie if I say I’m fine,” he candidly offers on the larrylanes-produced opener, Feelings. Those same impulses provide thematic influence for Loner as Shmurda bids for peace for himself, his friends and MohBad’s loved ones. Fast-rising singer and producer Bloody Civilian stops by for an ode for hustling on 1999, while Jeriq and Zlatan combine to provide the project’s liveliest moment on Oghene, with the trio supplicating for divine blessings. By the time R2 Sept 12 fades out to chants of MohBad’s name from a memorial held in Lagos last year, we’re reminded of the never-ending spectre of grief and how it can still creep up on us even at the most unexpected moments.

Nigerian music icon, Timaya is known for transforming street lingo & pop words into catchy melodies and irresistible hits that usually seem genre-bending.
With Dey Your Dey (which is a Nigerian street buzzword in Rivers State and the Niger Delta) that loosely translates into Maintain Your Lane in English, Timaya has not only managed to turn a popular street phrase into an enchanting anthem, but he has also creatively fused the nursery rhyme, rain rain go away to create music that appeals to every spectra of society. Inspired by his kids to create music that considers their demographic when he realized no one really considers kids when making secular music anymore, Timaya succeeded in blending street culture with popular kiddie culture.
In his trademark philosophical style, Timaya’s message on this record is positivity. As he advocates for a more tranquil and peaceful relationship between all humans, and where that won’t be the case, don’t bother anyone, just maintain your lane i.e. DEY YOUR DEY.
Dey Your Dey is the first single off Timaya’s highly anticipated Gladiator album to be released this year and the Afrobeats record sets the right pace for the album. Produced by hit record producer Masterkraft who has a potent sonic partnership with Timaya that always delivers viral hits including the ever vintage Ukwu, the song is already set to become a 2024 anthem.
Dey Your Dey which is only the latest of these Timaya/Masterkraft hit series is out. The visuals for Timaya’s new anthem could be out at any moment, and Timaya has stated online that it’s “a star studded movie & cultural masterpiece that he can’t wait for the world to experience.”

Throughout the 2010s, Tekno cemented an unforgettable legacy in Afrobeats history with a string of crossover hits. His style of creating dance-ready tunes and earwormy tracks stood him out as a mastermind among his Afrobeats fellows. Combined with that rare ability to write and produce — evident by how he lent his skill and pen to records by Drake, Ciara and Davido — he established himself as an all-round sonic polymath.
Although that impressive power hit a block when he had a vocal ailment, he gave a glimpse of his talents on his debut LP, 2020’s Old Romance. But Tekno’s range and prowess surge to full capacity here on 2023’s The More the Better. “After I lost my voice, it’s just not been enough music [for] my fans,” Tekno tells Apple Music. “Everyone felt I wasn’t serious with the slow pace I was releasing music. Right now, I’m in a space where I’m releasing as much music as possible—that’s where the [album] title comes from.”
A creative freedom spreads over The More the Better, unpacking a rich-in-form Tekno whose buttery-smooth vocals find the sweetest pockets of beats. The mood of the album is triumvirate, featuring Tekno’s vivid introspection, the presence of heady dance-floor tunes and his usual contagious takes on romance—all delivered in pidgin English.
“For me, this album is passing loads of messages to people because of the timeframe in which we live in,” the artist born Augustine Miles Kelechi Okechukwu explains. “Everyone just wants to move at a fast pace. No patience, no relaxation. Just allow yourself to relax and enjoy life.” Read on as Tekno walks us through the album, track by track.
Twice Shy
“When I said, ‘Just let your mind dey,’ I’m telling the average Nigerian to relax and understand that what we think about affects the outcome in life and how we see ourselves. You notice that when you’re doing something, and you’re anxious and angry, or nervous, you’re not the best version of yourself, but when you’re now calm, and you’re still engaged doing the same thing, it just happens naturally. For everyone who is in a particular position, understand that it’s not worrying that fixes it. It’s relaxation and just knowing that this one, too, shall pass.”
The More the Better
“For me, music is always about the beauty of the song, the melody of the song. This record explains the mood of the album. I’m telling people to stay in that positive energy, that positive vibe. I have a flair for melodies, and I spend a lot of time making sure melodies are perfect. So, this record was like that—making sure it encapsulates the concept of the album, which is satisfying the hunger of my fans. Making sure the pace at which I drop records is doubled.”
Flashing Lights
“Like I said in [the 2016 track ‘Pana’], love is a beautiful thing. With ‘Flashing Lights’, if you listen where I said, ‘Flashing lights you inna the centre eh’—love is at the centre of everything. You know when a light bulb shines, it’s difficult to look at the centre. That’s the true definition of the light shining. If she is the centre, then it means she brings me peace. That’s still another way of saying, ‘If I’m able to just focus on the source and just stay right there in the middle, this is all I want. This is the best version of this love that I can find.’”
Peppermint
“‘Peppermint’ is all about gbedu [the beat]. The producer, Egarboi, told me he had a beat he specially created for me. He played me this sample, and I liked it instantly. He sent it right away, and then we developed it from there.”
King of Pop
“First thing to start with, it’s a makossa song. I don’t think you’ve heard me make this kind of music before. It’s not like I haven’t made dance records, but this is like makossa. Also, I love Michael Jackson, who’s the original King of Pop. I just wanted to create a song I’d dance so much to, and if there’s one person that would also dance like it matters so much, it is Michael Jackson.”
Peace of Mind
“Peace of mind, to me, is too important. It’s underrated. No one talks about it. Everyone talks about, ‘I want to make money. I want to make it in life.’ Meanwhile, when they head back to their house at night, the matters of mind trouble them. The voice in their head toys with them. People crave for cars, people crave the best out of life, but we often forget there’s a process towards achieving that goal. You’re never going to know peace of mind because you’re just overshadowed and drowned with the thought of, ‘I want this, I want that,’—not realising that he who has peace, he who can control the voice in the head, has already won in life.”
Lokation
“I wanted a Yoruba record on my album, and this one had the most Yoruba, and the intonation of Yoruba. I worked on this with [singer-songwriter] Ayox. I don’t speak Yoruba, so we would sing a melody or two, and I’d ask, ‘How do you say this in Yoruba?’ Ayox is such a great artist, and he doesn’t just translate [the language]—he’s able to translate the melodies in a way that makes the song so great.”
Pocket
“I made this with Insane Chips. It’s a party song, but I also feel it’s a mindset. When I say, ‘When money dey pocket,’ a lot of people think it has to be in the range of $2 million before they can enjoy. No, it can just be that 1000 naira note, and you’re soft and good to go.”
Permit
“Egarboi produced the song. It was one of the beats he sent that had me stunned immediately. It’s a beautiful love song. For those that love a regular Tekno love song, this is for them.”
Borrow
“During the time we were creating for the album, I was always happy. And naturally, I’m a happy person. If I’m not happy, something has happened, and if I’m not happy, I stay away from everybody, so I don’t rub off that stench on anybody. So, when we created ‘Borrow’, produced again by Egarboi, I was in that happy mood. I think it’s one of those songs that I fell in love with the beat, and then we went ahead and just created a beautiful song to it. It’s a song I know my female fans would definitely love.”
Regina (feat. CKay)
“This song connected CKay and I really beautifully. The transition from my voice into his voice and his voice back into my voice—I really like it. I always just thought CKay is not an emotional artist, but his music has loads of emotion. ‘Regina’ is just soaked in emotions.”
Play
“The whole message that I preached for the whole album, it’s at the ending that I still made it obvious. [It’s about] never losing the child in you, because that child in you has no fears. When we were kids, we had the wildest dreams, the wildest ideas, wildest fun. That zone is where I’m trying to get people to relax and just enjoy, because no one is as carefree and playful as kids. It’s a zone where there’s no overthinking, and we’re not overwhelmed. I had already finished recording, I had already submitted, and then I was with Krizbeatz in the studio, and as soon as I heard the beat in my head, I knew what to say.”
Can’t Chase
“[This is the] oldest song on the album. For me, I don’t like when a woman runs her mouth. That’s why I said, ‘E get some kind of things that I can’t take, ’cause I know they do am to anybody.’ You won’t find me shouting on anybody, arguing or nagging—so why are you going to do it to me then? Women sometimes have a preference for trouble, so right there, the song provided an avenue for me to unpack my thoughts on relationships.”

Blessed with an unbeatable knack for staying on top of culture’s pulse, Ruger has always known how to make an introduction and get his audience on their feet. His debut project, 2021’s PANDEMIC EP, was a Gen Z-propelled response to the lonesome effects of COVID-19 lockdowns, while 2022’s incendiary EP The Second Wave paired the rising star’s hitmaking gravitas with a subtle wink to the social media lingo and quirks that have worked their way into wider Afropop culture—while referencing sexcapades and the perks of his burgeoning public profile.
On Ruger’s first full-length project, 2023’s RU The World, the singer subverts the braggadocio and chest-thumping angst that has largely defined his work for a textured and revealing reimmersion into his world. “I feel like people will understand me more,” the singer tells Apple Music. “Most of the time, I’ve not been able to talk about a lot of things because I didn’t want to speak about it yet. So, I feel like I was misunderstood at some point. People will know me more and just get the storyline behind everything I’ve done and what I’m doing right now. There are lots of things I couldn’t say that I just said in this album.”
Across 17 tracks, Ruger is engaging while candidly addressing his come-up, love life and place in the game over midtempo instrumentals that take influences from Afropop, drill, amapiano and house. Still, he is committed to making music to soundtrack different phases of people’s lives. Read on as Ruger runs us through key tracks from the album.
Tour
“‘Tour’ is about my tour life. I just finished my United States tour. I’m [getting ready] for my headline tour in London. I toured Europe this year. I toured Canada this year. So, everything that happened during the tour, my struggle, the hustle and everything, I put all of it into that song. The funny thing about this song is that Kukbeatz made this beat in the toilet. He started making the beat in the toilet. Then we vibed, and we made a hit record.”
Ashana
“‘Ashana’ is just like gangster love. It’s that feeling of having a baddie beside you. Sometimes, after you’ve done the dirty work, you just want someone to massage your body and make you feel good. It was produced by Legendury Beatz. There’s a grace they carry because they don’t just work with anybody. It’s a very catchy song.”
I Want Peace
“This one is a relationship-type song. It touches on most of the struggles we face with relationships because many people are in toxic relationships these days. So, I’m just trying to say, ‘I want peace, man. Can you just give me peace or let me be?’”
Blue
“‘Blue’ is about a one-night stand I had that turned into a fling or a short relationship. I liked the girl at some point, but not now—I’m over that. So, the song was about that experience. It was produced by Kukbeatz.”
Addiction [Ruger & Stefflon Don]
“Stefflon Don was very amazing to work with. ‘Addiction’ is just about being addicted to one person. You can’t leave the person no matter what. You know that person, so you’re just going back to that person no matter how crazy it is. There’s just that girl or guy that just gets you every time; no matter how long you stay apart from each other, you still end up circling around and getting back with each other.”
Kristy
“‘Kristy’ is basically a love song that gives assurance to whoever you love. I’m telling you, ‘I am here to stay no matter what. No matter what scars you have, no matter whatever you’re going through, we’re in this together.’”
All My Days [Ruger & Sauti Sol]
“I really love this song. It was produced by BenjiFlow, a UK producer. What I love most about this song is the instruments that were used—everything just gave it that African and very melodious type of vibe. I had finished the song already, but [then] I went to Kenya, and I was like, ‘I need to put Sauti Sol on this song.’ They just went in on it, and it was amazing.”
Nine
“‘Nine’ is too hard, man. It’s a mixture of Afrobeats, amapiano and house. I love it so much. It’s upbeat and very crazy. It just has a lot of components that people will love so much.”
Likely [Ruger & Govana]
“Govana is a legendary artist from Jamaica, and he vibed on this immediately. But this collaboration wasn’t about tapping in with Jamaica. When you play me a beat or when you play an instrument to me, it speaks to me. The beat tells me what to do on it. Sometimes, as an artist, just like a painter, the colours you put together tell you what to draw. The colours you put together will tell you if you’re going to draw the sea or you’re going to draw the sunset. So, when they played me the beat for ‘Likely,’ I just put it together on the Jamaican vibe.”
BoyToy
“‘BoyToy’ is a sex song, actually. I can’t wait for the gyal dem to listen to it because they need to have a song for themselves and something to go crazy to. It was produced by Kid Paris in London.”
Dear Ex [Ruger & Jugglerz]
“I recorded ‘Dear Ex’ in Germany in 2022, when I was on my European tour. Shout-out to Jugglerz; they’re the ones who produced that song. That song is just me apologising for the mistakes that I’ve made relationship-wise. It’s good to be remorseful if you do a bad thing. I think I’m a changed man and a better person now. So, it’s only right for me to make this song.”
Island Girl [Ruger & Projexx]
“Projexx and I have [worked together before] on ‘Sidepiece’. So, I knew I had to put Projexx on my album. There’s something about me and Projexx that allows our voices to complement each other, so it was easy. The Jamaican vibe, the softness in the voice, everything was just perfect.”
Red Flags
“‘Red Flags’ is an amazing song. It’s the first song I perform at my shows. I go onto the stage with ‘Red Flags’, and it goes bonkers. You see girls shouting and screaming along to the lyrics. They scream at the top of their lungs. I think girls like this song because it speaks to them and the experiences they’ve been through. They’ve been in relationships where they think they can make things work, but at the end of the day, they’re fucking things up.”
Bun Bun [Ruger & Jugglerz]
“‘Bun Bun’ was produced by Jugglerz in Germany, too. That session was amazing. I think the Jugglerz just got a new studio, and I said, ‘Let me go test it out.’ We made ‘Bun Bun,’ and it’s just an amazing and vibey song.”
Holy Ground
“I recorded ‘Holy Ground’ in 2020, and I just felt like it’s the perfect song to close the album because it’s a song that has a lot of prophecy in it. I made it in a very small studio, and I’m happy that it’s on this album. The album is just an extension of myself. People are going to know me more when they listen to this album. They’re going to have a reaction. Whoever hates me will love me more now, or even hate me more, depending on how they feel after listening to the album.”

Much of the singer’s decade-plus reign at the top of Afropop has been spent in the construction of rapturous moments when the barrier between music, audience and performer explodes into white-hot moments of manic ecstasy. Every album release has felt like a furtherance of that quest. He announced his arrival on the scene with 2012’s Omo Baba Olowo, a swashbuckling cache of songs that presented him as an iconoclastic figure with a dream of reshaping the genre’s defined order. On his sophomore LP, A Good Time, Davido reflected on his rising global profile vis-à-vis Afropop’s western push, while album number three, A Better Time, stood out as a beacon of light from the lonesome, uncertain moodscape of 2020’s COVID-19 disruptions.
As with all success stories, these moments of elation and escape have come with prickly instances of sorrow and pain. Timeless, Davido’s highly anticipated fourth album, follows a period of such intensely personal losses and an extended retreat from the public eye after the tragic passing of his son in 2022. Across Timeless’s 17 tracks, Davido responds with an elder’s acceptance, prioritising soothing self-preservation over blinding euphoria and returning with songs that are as measured as they are assured of his success over whatever forces might arise against him. The opening song, Over Dem, takes a reference from the biblical story of David and Goliath to make a point about his inevitable rise, hinting at an introspective turn from Afropop’s premier party-starter. Other songs like Godfather, Away and LCND offer a glimpse into the singer’s id as he dissects pain, seeks healing and comes to terms with his titanic profile.
However, Timeless is not only about drawing strength to go on; there are more of the romantic slappers that Davido has made a stock-in-trade (No Competition and For The Road) as well a bouncy hip-hop-influenced collab with grime don Skepta (U [Juju]) before things round up with the fiery Champion Sound. Overall, Timeless is an instructive look into the life of a phenom who has dealt with the darkest of times and come out raring to go again.

The presidential, gubernatorial, national assembly and state assembly elections of the largest black nation on earth, Nigeria have been concluded, but Nigerians aren’t having it due to the slapdash electoral malpractice, violence and lack of transparency. The election conducted by the INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yabuku has been condemned by many international and local observers, as well as well-meaning Nigerians. The election has also been regarded by many as the worst in Nigeria’s democratic history. To that effect, renowned Nigerian rappers, Falz and Vector have decided to express their views about the election in their latest single titled Yakubu.
On the new single, Falz and Vector represent frustrated Nigerians who have been constantly oppressed, and denied their constitutional right to vote. With lyrics such as: “Mr Yakubu! Ę ma ń se bi fraudster, you don’t want to prosper, come and collect, oscar 300 billion te gbà lówó ìjoba, kí le fi se ná sir,” Falz didn’t hold back, the rapper calls out INEC, its chairman, and corrupt political parties allegedly involved in the electoral malpractices. Vector had some critical points to buttress as well, the rapper had a lot to say about the electoral process, the court jurisdiction and of course, the INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yabuku.
The record was produced by Chillz. The video was co-directed by Oyetwopointo and Falz.

R&B/Soul singer, songwriter and record producer Jasën Blu continues to make an unbroken string of solid statements with his music, the latest of which is his newest offering, an aptly titled intimacy soundtrack, Chill. The second official single from long-time-coming full-length debut album Soulwave, Chill (written, produced and performed by–you guessed right, Blu himself in his usual fashion via his SoundQraft LLC production outfit) confidently explores sensuality in a way only truly seasoned Soul/R&B orchestrators do; with unabashed sexual expressions neatly laid on a perfectly laidback, slow-burn instrumentation of acoustic piano, sparse but albeit tight drums, moody synthesizers and subtle flutes to arrive at a perfect bedroom anthem.
On Chill, just like what has come to be known as his signature style going by his previous releases, Blu delivers extremely sensual lyrics in a perfect blend of English, Yoruba and Pidgin English in a way every listener from Lagos to California, London to Rio and even as farther as Tokyo can readily relate to, especially if they happen to be tuning in from choice locations like a scented-candle lit bedroom, a heated bath tub, a red-lit club floor or even a loud, raging arena filled to the brim with excited adults. Fewer lines can set the mood than Blu‘s straight-down-to-business opener, Omoge take your clothes off.., and the vivid sexual imagery painted with words and sounds on the record certifies it as a new, potent rompers’ favorite as well as a casual listen staple.
Released via Blu‘s label Nubiana Records, “Chill” follows on the heels of his previous releases like Already (first official single off Soulwave), Brown Shuga off his late 2020 EP, Road 2 Soulwave and most recently the non-album buzz single Otojometa, alongside several official movie soundtracks and original compositions. Soulwave his long-awaited debut album and sequel to his Road 2 Soulwave EP arrives later in 2023.

In the two years following his grand introduction on 2020’s Chrome, Zinoleesky saw his star power rise thanks to a street-inspired lyrical style that explored the contrast of his weighty ambitions and the extenuating circumstances of his birth. But while the tension between goals and origin has been the crux of his most profound work, the singer has also found time to reflect on the evolving landscape of his life on tracks like the Niphkeys-produced Blessings and Naira Marley, and ponder companionship on songs like Loving You and Rocking.
On 2022’s Grit & Lust, Zinoleesky confirms himself as a transcendent star via the power of his storytelling and witty observations. Across eight songs, the singer (born Oniyide Azeez) pulls threads from his life to create a compelling tapestry of the life of a pop star in the middle of a compelling come-up. Packed with soulful odes and gritty word play punctuated by Zinoleesky’s lithe voice, Grit & Lust is not so much a victory lap as it is a testament of where he is right now.
Personal is an audacious hustler’s anthem that addresses online trolls and his super-sized dreams, while Yan Yan Yan, a hypnotic blend of log drums and prickly horns, finds Zinoleesky bigging up himself. As with everything Zinoleesky, the true clincher on Grit & Lust is how he keeps finding nimble pockets to microcosmically express elation, angst and acceptance that are alien to the de rigeur of street pop, as he does poignantly on the Ayra Starr-assisted Many Roads.

With the year coming to a close, and Christmas bells are ringing, love is in the air, plus the pulsating air of celebration and thanksgiving, award-winning actress and movie producer, Bikiya Graham-Douglas decided to push the creative envelope further, by going back to the core of where it all began for her — music!
Revisiting her love for music, the talented thespian brings the year to a close with a soulful rendition of the eternal favourite Christmas anthem, Silent Night. Produced by GospelondBeatz with additional lyrics by Bikiya herself, Silent Night — the cover is a beautiful infusion of Afro-Jazz and Amapiano which leans on a unique and bopping rhythm, miles different from the original carol. “I wanted to make a Christmas song but I wanted something unconventional with an Afro twist to it. Silent Night is one of my favourite Christmas songs and the way it’s written made it perfect for this style. I added a few words to already beautiful lyrics, kept it simple and voila! this version was born.”
Arts which is unarguably one version of Bikiya‘s multi-layered personality has flourished the actress with over 13 years of experience, despite the fact that she originally wanted to become a singer before acting found its way into her life. With her original intent to be a singer, even as she excels in other art forms, very modestly, she says: “Music would always be my first love, and I would never stop pursuing ways to express myself through singing.”
Award-winning actress and producer, Bikiya Graham-Douglas is one of the few talents in the industry who is passionate about impacting the younger generation in the world of Arts, filmmaking and theatre, birthing the Beeta Universal Arts Foundation, among other laudable projects this forward-thinking thespian has.

Runtown’s strength as an artist has always been rooted in his solid understanding of prevalent mainstream pop sensibilities. It does not change as he returns to the music scene with Signs following 2021’s Soundgod Fest Reloaded. The 13-track project assumes a gentle, pensive and introspective mood. He trades the high-energy moments that outlined earlier projects like his debut Ghetto University for midtempo production and lax delivery, which sit faultlessly within Afropop’s current soundscape. “For many people, it might feel like their first time hearing me on songs like these,” Runtown tells Apple Music. “It might even seem like they’re listening to a new artist. But it’s mostly me going back to the basics with a fresh spin.”
Signs spares no feelings as it floats between themes of love, faith and growth while delving into genres like sultry ’80s pop, Afropop and reggae and showcasing a wiser, more grown-up version of Runtown. Intentionality, depth and refinement are the leading markers of this. On Sinnerman, he recognises the imperfections in his actions and calls for understanding stating that “at the end of the day, I am only a man”. The project’s lead single, Things I Know, is characterised by its smooth synths reminiscent of his 2016 megahit, Mad Over You. Dangerous Hearts samples Sade’s The Sweetest Taboo while the singer calls on his love interest with melodies spruced up by Mr Hudson. Read on as he walks us through key tracks from the album.
Signs
“I was like, ‘OK, the album is called Signs. I need to go God MC on this song. It needs to top any song.’ My mind was on Welcome to Jamrock. I listened to the album a lot, and each time, I’d go back and change my verse like, ‘No way, Damian Marley is still killing me.’ ‘Signs’ is me showing my skillset as a composer and producer because I produced most of it, but Mystro created the beat.”
Sinnerman
“There are these French producers I linked up with while I was in Paris recording. They were playing this guitar riff. I later took it to the studio and worked over it with Mystro, who produced the final cut. I have always been a fan of Nina Simone’s ‘Sinnerman’ because I could relate, and for a long time, I was like, ‘I’m going to make a song called ‘Sinnerman’. We live in a society where people judge one another a lot. This track is me telling everyone to be proud of who they are and what they do. I’m not saying being bad is good. But I mean just be yourself. People will judge regardless.”
Things I Know
“This was the first song I created when I went into the studio in Paris to start building ideas for the album. I worked with a producer from Senegal called Akatché. He’s a very talented producer. I didn’t ever want to do a very commercial pop song because sometimes when you go pop, it becomes very generic. This made me dislike the song when I was done with it, but everyone else went crazy for it. One day, I woke up, played the song, and was like, ‘What? This has to go first. This is the first song that needs to be released.’”
High Spirit
“This is my overall favourite song on the album. It’s inspired by the idea of people thinking that you are not OK when you aren’t so visible on social media when the reverse is the case. I always try to enjoy myself even when you don’t see me. Trust me, I’m out here living my life. ‘Even on the low, we dey for high spirit.’ Never sad, never down, never empty.”
Ofe Pami
“It means ‘don’t kill me’. This song is just for the club, you know. It’s for the dinners and outdoor scenes. It’s for when you’re talking to a cute girl and you’re catching a vibe. It’s just a fun break in the album because it was getting too preachy. It features Jamopyper.”
All About You
“For love songs, I usually don’t need a lot of inspiration. It mostly starts with me in the studio making a catchy beat that the ladies will love. This song is about a guy who’s in love and confused. He says to the girl, ‘I don’t know what to do. Tell me what do I do.’ That’s how the lyrics go. So it’s just someone that is hopelessly in love.”
Fences
“At the time of creating the album, I was just done with a lot of things. I was in a new label situation and everything was new. ‘Fences’ was the first step in what I call a new journey in my life. To get to this point, it was important for me to build fences instead of walls and watch who is walking in. You let some in and you don’t let in others. But when you build walls, you don’t see over it, so you won’t be able to tell good from the bad anymore.”
Dangerous Hearts
“I spent the whole lockdown in London and during that time, I connected with Mr Hudson. This is the second [song I] recorded. It has like 2 million versions. I used to see Beyoncé say things like she recorded a song 50 times, and I’d be like, ‘How is that possible?’ But with this song, I was like, ‘OK, I believe it.’ Quite a lot of versions, crazy versions. Mystro had at least 10 versions. When we got the final one, we wanted to make it Afropop with a retro ’80s vibe to it. I believe the best music was made in that era.”
Under Pressure
“This is my favourite love song on the album. It’s a different cut from the songs I usually make. This is the first time I’m using Western pop progressions to make an Afropop song. I always wanted to do that in my career, and we scored it. It has the same effect ‘Mad Over You’ had on me. It’s the only song I can put on repeat for two days straight. It just flows. It’s one of the songs that make you feel in love. Mystro produced it as well.”
Propaganda
“‘Propaganda’ was supposed to be the first song I was going to release because of the story behind it. I wrote it in 2019, but it sounded very Afropop and that wasn’t the direction I had in mind for 2019. I eventually decided to keep it for Signs. It’s a comeback song where I’m pretty much saying that I keep it real with no gimmicks.”
Hella Sacrifice
“This is a summary of the whole journey. The lyrics go, ‘I paid the price too many times. I was crucified, it was one hella sacrifice.’ It’s just reflecting on the past and everything that happened. The intro starts with a sample that says ‘raggamuffin’. When you hear Jamaicans say ‘raggamuffin’, they are referring to the diamond in the dirt. I was just in my diamond-in-the-dirt element.”

The creator of what he calls the Continental Sound, the former seminary student and would-be Catholic priest fuses the melodies and rhythms of today’s Afrobeat with pan-African influences and reggae/dancehall to create deeply resonant songs that transcend cultures and borders
With a run of successful singles (Man on Duty, Work ‘N’ Grind) to his credit and over 70 million streams on digital platforms, King Perryy dropped his debut album Citizen of the World. “The Continental Sound is a fusion of different genres, lifestyles, and cultures.”

YBNL signee, Senth (Felix Nwokedi Earnest), is shaking up the R&B scene with his new EP, Senth Of Her. He recently dropped his debut single Dagger, the young hitmaker is pulling out all the stops for his new project. The new EP features five tracks, making it clear the rising star has what it takes to shine.
Sonically, Senth is right in line with his contemporaries, but he carves out his own lane by adding a WAYYY SUCCY vibe to each track. Vocally, Senth is gifted with an impressive range, tone, and versatility that is on full display on the EP. However, his biggest strength as an artiste is arguably his pen game. His unique voice as a songwriter is a delicate balance between sentimental and street.
Senth Of Her has songs that are sweet enough to have girls going crazy (So Fine, So Sweet), but beats hard enough for dudes to bump as well (Don’t Care, Senthololo). This EP is sure to be in constant rotation this December. Senth is definitely one to watch in 2023. Plugged by Sheriff Salaudeen for YBNL/MMLT.

Since his emergence in 2010, Erigga has captivated with his boisterous unapologetic style, and he builds on that foundation with his fifth album, The Lost Boy.
*INSHALLAH sets the tone for the Warri-born artist’s do-it-yourself approach to life and music. Through an Arabic phrase meaning God willing*, Erigga articulates that, despite his braggadocious raps on tracks like L with V’S (Louis Vuitton), his music is a story of hope. While Erigga never forgets to remind fans of his provocative side on the thumping trap drums of VAWULENCE, behind the anthems, he makes room for socio-political messages. “The only time dem dey come see us is when the election is near,” the singer-songwriter states in BALLADS OF A LOST BOY (Word Poetry)*.***
*Boldly, *Erigga goes on to mention the 1997 Warri crisis; not only how it affected Nigeria but also his mental state. The lyrical elements of The Lost Boy create a unique balance between the seductive and commercial appeal of the project. This is epitomised in ELON MUSK, where Erigga personifies money in the first verse before making room for the choral sounds of Kayve on the hook, blending the lines between gospel, Afrobeat and Hip-Hop. Behind his boisterous approach to The Lost Boy, Erigga crafts a message of aspiration, inspiration and ambition, using his flamboyant voice to tell an intimate story of finding himself.****

Ajebo Hustlers’ Bad Boy Etiquette 101 layers witty rhymes and infectious melodies over smooth instrumentation animated by cadenced percussion.
Rhythmic hooks accompany pidgin-infused lyricism as Knowledge and Piego scope out various themes through a romantic lens. While the airy opener Dreams captures the duo’s ambitions, the infectious, Fave-assisted In Love sets the tone for an exploration of crossed wires (Kisses) and devotion (Loyalty).
In a summation of these deftly crafted jams, the tropical acoustics of closer Burn My Cable embody the EP’s seamless blend of Rap, Afrobeats and Amapiano.

Basically, I find ways to laugh and feel ridiculous about my anger and that inspired me to write How To Kill a Man.”
The video was produced and directed by Bloody Civilian herself. The visuals are a testament to the bravery, strength and determination of women all over. Bloody Civilian — known for her undeniable talent in composing songs, was one of the voices in the soundtracks of the movie Black Panther.

Mr Eazi has shared See Something, his new single featuring DJ Neptune (Nigeria), Shatta Wale (Ghana), Medikal (Ghana) and Minz (Nigeria).
The pan-African banger is Mr Eazi’s second dive into Amapiano following the success of his first-ever amapiano record Patek, the genre that’s exploded out of South Africa’s dance music underground to become a global phenomenon recently.
Mr Eazi wrote an early version of the song on a whim at a friend’s wedding, after which he enlisted one of Africa’s biggest DJs, DJ Neptune, and Ghana’s rap star Shatta Wale. Produced by DJ Tárico, whose Amapiano smash Yaba Baluku took Africa by storm over the past year; it can be said that Mr Eazi is set to make this December definitely one to remember. After a brief snippet posted to Instagram and TikTok generated hundreds of user-generated videos and millions of views, the snippets’ name tags have gone ahead to reveal that Eazi later recruited Ghanaian rapper Medikal and rising Nigerian star Minz to help him finish the track — and crystallize its banger status.
The result is yet another light-hearted and breezy tune by Mr Eazi celebrating and promoting self-love and appreciation; from body type to social class. Mr Eazi’s message in See Something is one that promotes happiness and self-appreciation.
“If you thought you loved Patek, then wait till you listen to See Something,” Mr Eazi says. “It’s a fun song that I can’t wait to perform. And it’s got Nigeria, Ghana and Mozambique all together on one track.”
See Something follows recent singles Patek, Legalize and Personal Baby among Mr Eazi’s 2022 releases. Fans can expect more singles from the Nigerian music superstar and African business innovator in the coming year, as he gears up to share his long-awaited official debut album in 2023.

Music minister, songwriter, recording and performing artiste, Grace Oluwaloju releases a brand new single titled Mercy featuring Pastor David Popoola.
According to her, she received this song in the place of prayer for mercy years ago, the Holy Spirit confirmed it again months later and gave her the inspiration, rhythm and who to be featured on it a couple of months later.
“This song has been a blessing to me in so many ways. I pray as you dwell on this song the mercy of God will continue to prevail over judgment for you in Jesus name, I believe it will bless you. Special thanks to my father in the Lord Pastor David Popoola for the interest to be part of this project.
The mercy of God is beyond our understanding, it is one of the greatest gifts of God to mankind. Not only do we have a patient God, His mercy is incomprehensible. The word of God in Romans 9:15 says, “I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.” God’s mercy shows up in our lives at salvation and He continually shows mercy in forgiveness. He extended mercy in protecting Israel – sending prophets to warn them of sin and draw them back to Himself. He still convicts us through the Holy Spirit. His grace and mercy preserve His people.”

Noon Dave is carving his own niche in the music scene by creating an experience with his songs as he does in his new single Brunch.
The newly signed Chocolate City Music RnB artiste is one who grew up in the city of Lagos and infuses RnB elements in his music.
The single, which is a lead song off his forthcoming project, is accompanied by a vibrant display of subtle and pure vocals.
On the single, he sings almost exclusively about taking his lover to brunch or, more specifically, about the titillating promise of sex. This oozing sensuality yields mood music as he treats consent like a warm embrace.
Brunch, this new single is a classic throwback with daring yet not too risque lyrics. Evidently, Noon Dave has long explored the friction between new wave and old-school R&B. Still, it’s never felt so fresh with the infusion of pidgin, both timeless and futuristic, familiar but retro.
Speaking about this single, Noon Dave explains, “Brunch was very much inspired by Saint JHN’s music I listened to, and this moved me to make song lovers can enjoy while having a great time.”
Noon Dave is a new variety of RnB artists in Nigeria, and he wants listeners to be exceptionally entertained by his music.

After giving insights on the project with the release of Let You Down and Sad Tonight, talented Nigerian singer and songwriter WurlD finally delivers his highly anticipated album titled My World With U.
On his fifth studio project, WurlD offers a rare invitation backstage. “I’m sharing a lot; it’s not the usual conversations,” he tells Apple Music. “I’ve shared a lot more of myself behind the scenes. I’m bringing people into our flaws and my imperfections. I’m sharing my truth.”
While the Lagos-born singer, songwriter and producer moved to the US during his secondary school years, returning to Nigeria in 2018, he chose to quarantine in his homeland as the pandemic raged in 2020 — a time when he became his most introspective. “Above everything else, this was a time to rely on self,” WurlD (Sadiq Onifade) explains. “We all had ourselves to take care of really, because we weren’t around people. And for me that shaped a lot of decisions I made on this album. It helped me craft a lot more depth in this album, instead of just creating commercial records.”
That introspection allowed him to create a narrative journey that covers vulnerability, patience, self-awareness and communication, stitched together with the hip-hop, R&B and Afrobeats threads he refined during his years spent living between Atlanta and Lagos.
“A lot of people see the blue hair, the pretty looks, the sweet sound… I want to show you all that,” he confesses. “But I’m not [just] that. I’m a work in progress just like everyone else. And it’s My WorlD With U because I’m just as flawed as, and just as great as you. Still a work in progress, just like everybody else.” Here, he talks us through key tracks from the album.
These Days Love Don’t Change (feat. Dami Oniru)
“These days, I want to be successful, but this time I want to be successful with my friends, with my homies, with my community. I want to be successful with you beside me. And especially even in the Afrobeats community—I think we can really push a lot more forward, through collaborations and a lot of support in each other. So it’s beyond just me being successful. There’s a first part: ’These Days’. And it goes into this chant and this very spiritual space—‘Love Don’t Change’. Time is going to change, people are going to change, we are going to fade, but love never changes. These days, regardless of where I am, our love will never change.”
Gucci
“I’m really talking about self-love. I’m a victim of this—we often describe success and our happiness through material things. ‘Gucci’ is an example here, but check this out: you can take it all away, but every time you see me, I’m myself. I’m happy with myself first, before everything else. So whenever I don’t have all these things, I’m still me. I’ve never changed. I will always remain true to me in the depth of my soul no matter the circumstances.”
Let You Down
“This might be one of the first times I’ve really been vulnerable on a song, sharing my flaws, But the reality of this is that, when a woman claps back, it hurts different. For men, we can’t take it. Our egos are bruised; we’re hurt different; it cuts deeper. There are so many factors around society’s idea of when a man cheats, [versus] when a woman does—but it cuts different. So this is me expressing how hard it feels. It’s just shedding the light on the double standard—but when the woman does this, it’s a whole drama around it. We men can’t take it; I can’t take it.”
Sad Tonight
“I messed up, now she messed up. But now I’m calm; I’m not as aggressive. I’m still in my feelings, but now I’m facing the potential of losing this love forever. This is me trying to find a resolution, but the idea of waking up every morning with a heavy heart, knowing that you haven’t resolved issues with a partner, it’s never a good feeling. So I’m saying, ‘I don’t want to go to bed sad tonight, I don’t want to go to bed mad tonight. I want you closer. I want to wake up with a new chapter feeling better tomorrow.’”
Toxic [WurlD & Landstrip Chip]
“When two people have really hurt each other, it turns into a toxic situation because we get triggered by past experiences. Now we’re both insecure, and that brings the toxicity. Because I can’t have friends; I can’t say ‘hello’. She’s looking at me like, ‘Have you messed with her? Who’s that you with? Why is that person saying hi?’ We’re both toxic to each other now. Now we are trying to fix it, but it’s more difficult.”
Sweet N Fine (feat. Sarz)
“‘Sweet and Fine’ is my first step out of the relationship. I’m back out, trying to try to date, trying to be a better man; meeting someone new. And I’m really trying to bring her into my corner. I’m really just trying to be a better person, in that I’m being patient. I’m trying to be sweet. And I’m trying to figure it out. This is something new; I’m back out now with something new.”
Same As You
“When you’re newly single, you get caught up in a whole bunch of messy situations. This is me falling in love with another man’s girl. And she loves us the same. So this is me having a conversation with [that man]. We’re literally having a conversation and I’m saying, ‘I never meant to fall in love with her—but she says that she loves us the same way. She loves me the same as you. And I love her the same as you.’ It’s really, really messy. You don’t choose who you fall in love with. Sometimes you want to do something casual, and you find out that person belongs to somebody else. This is part of being single and being out there, like they say in the streets.”
Something To Lose
“You’re still trying to find yourself. You’re dating a lot of different people, but you find out real fast that a lot of people don’t really have your best interests [in mind]. They’re just as broken as you, trying to find an escape. Sometimes some people don’t have a lot to offer—they just need somebody to lean on. Here, I’m experiencing a lot of people that want to just take from me, but don’t really have much to offer. So I’m only going to fk with you if you got something to lose. I have so much to protect now. I can’t afford to have you take from me and bring me down to your level, if you don’t have anything to offer.”
Shine (feat. Sho Madjozi)
“Shout out to Sho Madjozi. This record was produced by my very good friend, Dot da Genius. Initially, I was going to release it as a solo record, but I connected with Sho Madjozi earlier [in 2022]. She loved the record, and the rest is history. I’m excited to bring South Africa into this album and that energy. It’s a world sound—Africa to the world. And we’re shining on everything as Africans.”
Make It Snow
“When you have that new love, everything’s on a high. So ‘Make It Snow’ has a double meaning. When two people come together, there’s a climax—it’s the highest of feeling. It’s rhythmic. But it’s the highest of feeling when two people come together, they connect deeply in emotion. And this is their experience. We’re just making the snow.”
Stamina (feat. LuuDadeejay) [WurlD & Major League Djz]
“Shout out to Major League Djz and LuuDadeejay on the production. These are some of my favourite people in the whole universe. We have a great connection. A lot of times artists to artists relationships are very business- and very hype-based. We connected at a time when it wasn’t so much about hype—it was just the music. And I’m glad to just have done this one with them. This is a sensual Afro-amapiano sound that we’ve created. It’s not too much of the high energy as the other records; this one taps into the sensuality and feel. It’s softer, but it’s still a beautiful experience.”
Overthinking
“With ‘Overthinking’, now I’m in a good space. I’m in something new; it feels perfect. But guess what? I’m still flawed. My past is haunting me now because I can’t stop overthinking that this may go wrong. Is this too good to be true? Is this person here for me? Will this person love me like they say they will? Because the past person said the same thing, but it didn’t turn out that way. I’m trying to be better; now we’re getting to know each other, but I’m still overthinking. I can’t stop overthinking this love and I hope it doesn’t push you away. That’s the narrative.”
No Easy Love
“When you love someone in any situation—family, friendship—the love part comes naturally. We don’t pick the people that we love. It picks us. But in order to keep that love, you have to fight for it, to work for it. That’s why I say ‘No Easy Love’. Now I found something new, but this time around, I have to work for it, to protect it, to keep it. That’s the hard part. And I wanted to end the album on the high note of hope, regardless of the toxicity that started it. Because now I’m hopeful that I’m being better. I’m trying to be a better communicator, trying to be a better person to my friends, to my lover and just improving. It’s a new evolution. Because it never ends.”

Talented Nigerian singer and songwriter, Adekunle Gold releases his highly anticipated album titled Catch Me If You Can.
There is something telling about Adekunle Gold referring to his fourth album as the fourth level of a video game: he sees it as absorbing and all-consuming as video games are to their players—and he wants it to be enjoyed. “I think of my whole discography as an adventure game,” he tells Apple Music. “It gets really interesting at every level.”
Catch Me If You Can is a sensual slow burn steeped heavily in Afrobeats, with a nod to Amapiano. In subject matter, it is both irreverent and earnest. “My limitations are done and I am living even through my music,” he explains. “I want everyone who listens to this album, fan or not, to understand my story, embrace their own and be fearlessly committed to living life with no regrets.” Here, AG Baby talks us through each track.
Born Again (feat. Fatoumata Diawara)
“The original title of the song was ‘Welcome To My Life, You’re Not Too Late’, but my people said it was too long. So I went with ‘Born again’. This song is the energetic intro that introduces the album. A lyric like, ‘When I turned 30/It dawned on me/That I’ve been living for people/but me,’ was my realisation that the kind of music I was making, the clothes I wore, my hairstyle, how I wanted my body to be like—I was doing all this for other people. It is now time for me to do things for myself…because I am now completely independent as a person.”
Win
“This song is my way of giving a shout out to my mom, my friends who held me down for years, and to my fans. But most importantly, it’s a shout out to me for not giving up on myself. I’ve had to be resilient and tenacious to get to where I am. And now I just want to win.”
Mase Mi
“The title is in Yoruba. It means, ‘Don’t tempt me’. I’m talking to Satan in this song, saying ‘Don’t tempt me. Tempt somebody else’s son. Not today, Satan.’ When I was writing the song I was in a trance. I danced all through the recording of the song. It made me so happy. I felt like the hosts of heaven were with me. I was asking God to protect me, to let me have love in my heart.”
One Woman (feat. Ty Dolla $ign)
“I wrote this song in during the pandemic in 2020, in my little closet. I was losing my mind. I wanted to say that I’m shamelessly a lover-man. I actually taught Ty Dolla $ign to sing in Igbo and Pidgin. He was so gracious and ready to learn. We had so much fun. The chemistry was so great.”
Mercy
“This is my absolute jam. I was just thinking about how you can be in bed with people who don’t even like you; and you don’t even know. People that you think are for you, are sometimes not for you at all. The first line that came to me was, ‘Open my eyes/show me who day for me.’ Interestingly, since I wrote this song—it’s almost like a personal prayer for me—some people have [revealed] themselves. I realised they are not the people that I want in my life. It’s not an obsession [over] finding who your enemy is; the intention is to know who has the right energy and should be in your midst.”
More Than Enough
“This song is a holiday. When I was writing it I had no worries at all. I was just thinking of the times when you want to take your significant other out and just spoil them.”
Sinner [Adekunle Gold & Lucky Daye]
“I wanted to write about the story of King David and Bathsheba from the Bible, but from my own perspective. I thought Bathsheba must have been an African; she’s so beautiful. She must have had a great bum that she almost caused the fall of a king. David was ready to risk it all.”
FYE (feat. Stefflon Don)
“This is the last song I wrote this song in London, with Stefflon Don. I was in the studio with Rymez and Lekaa, and we were just vibing. It’s definitely my top 3 in the album. It’s the song where I was my nastiest.”
Sleep
“This one is interesting. It’s the one song that I wanted a song that was extremely different to the rest of the album. When we were recording the song I fell asleep, which I never do in studio. When the producer woke me up to end the session because he thought I was tired, I refused. I really think this song should be on people’s sex playlist.”
High [Adekunle Gold & Davido]
“Back in January 2021, I was with my friend, chilling at a poolside, and he was playing Amapiano in the background. I was like, ‘What is this sound?’ Amapiano is God’s gifeat. to South Africa. It is absolutely beautiful and nobody can make it like South Africans.”
Dior Dior Dior (feat. Fousheé)
“I wrote this song the same week I wrote “High”. I’d set up my studio in an AirBnb because I just wanted to get away from home. I was unpacking my bag and then I saw my Dior cologne. Seeing it inspired me to create a double entendre of the cologne as a girl; the same way musicians used to do about cars.”
It Is What It Is
“I just wanted to share a few facts about life. Like how people who don’t feed you are the first to talk about you; and how money doesn’t bring you happiness. I knew that people would come for me, saying that I’m a hypocrite because I have money. But even I didn’t realise that it doesn’t bring you happiness until I got it. Having said that, I’m still praying that others get money too.”
Selah
“This song is about Geminis. I’m not that into horoscopes, but I hear a lot about how crazy Geminis are. But the plot twist is that my daughter is a Gemini and I hope she forgives me when she grows up.”
Catch Me If You Can
“I also wrote this one during the pandemic, in the same closet that I wrote ‘One Woman’ in. This song almost tells the entire story of the album. It’s about my journey: how hard I worked to get where I am. I know that people say that people must be given their flowers, but I’m at the point where I’m getting my own flowers. A whole field of lavender.”

These are the commands, decrees and laws the Lord your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the Lord your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life. – Deuteronomy 6:1-2 (NIV)
Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. – Psalm 37:4 (NIV)
I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure. You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand. – Psalm 16:8-9, 11 (NIV)

Renowned music director, Emmanuel Awipi has released a brand new single titled Amen featuring talented vocalist Rume.
The song Amen is a song that speaks about the faithfulness of God. 2 Corinthians 1 tells us that all the promises of God are Yea and Amen in Christ Jesus. Thus, the song is borne out of the hope for the believer to understand that every prayer they make is answered in Christ.
When we pray through Christ, God has the legal responsibility to answer our prayers. It is for us to get into that place where we call on the name of Jesus; Amen, Amen, it is so because God is Faithful.
“My prayer is that as you listen, the love of Jesus and the grace of God will become real to You and, the promises of God will be assured as it is assured in Christ, The Amen of God” – Awipi
