This is a jam from the sessions that would eventually become Ashes of the Phoenix.
It was recorded on my phone in 2011, so it sounds like shit.
I found a way to separate the instruments onto their own tracks and then remixed the song.
It sounds pretty much the same.
Sometimes it can be beautiful and dirty at the same time.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Mercury
"Project Mercury was the first human spaceflight program of the United States, running from 1958 through 1963. An early highlight of the Space Race, its goal was to put a man into Earth orbit and return him safely."
We're coming back into the atmosphere. If we burn up on the way, well, that's a shame.
There were a bunch of plastic squares in the backyard having retarded arguments about who was more "enlightened".
We decided to get away from them and went into the garage to jam. This is what we got. I didn't feel like thinking of a name for it.
The nail that was holding the kick drum pedal together fell out, so we figured it was time to end the jam.
This is the last thing we recorded for this album.
Named it the first thing that came to mind while listening to it.
This is the unedited version. You can hear us talking a bit before the recording starts and also I was smashing on the cymbals at the end because I love dissonance.
The sun was setting while we were recording this, and when I went back to listen to it, the levels were turned down too low.
I just named the file "Low" so I could remember what jam it was, and the name stuck.
You can hear our audience leave halfway through, saying "I'll walk to Wawa if you want..."
A rare instance in which Appleton decided to do the vocals. The amp levels were off.
Lyrics:
They're amazing those things you can do with your mind I find my thoughts still clouded by you I don't know why and after all this time
Take a look around see the world you wish to see It's staring blankly at you and asks you who you're trying to be
And you say "I'm not trying to be someone other than the life that flows freely" It pulses through your fingertips and makes its way across the sea.
And after all this time I don't know why I find my thoughts still clouded by you Those things you can do with your mind, they're amazing
Redo of a song from our previous album "The Red One (Best of the Basement)"
Lyrics:
We've called you here today to set your mind straight Listen to the words I say and try to relate
We've been monitoring your actions and we've noticed something strange A change in your reactions Are we on the same page?
We know about the drugs you do We know about the girls you screw Why not stay and tell us some more? After all, what you say stays behind these doors
We believe we know what's best for you, even if it's not what you want to do We'll lock you up inside of a cage Fill your head with blinding rage
You are going to attempt suicide You are going on one hell of a ride It seems like nothing is residual when you're a troubled individual
Troubled Individual
Troubled Individual
We had a conversation a few weeks prior to recording this about how everyone does all this stuff to impress the people they don't like to make a reputation for themselves so they can get jobs they hate and have a false sense of acceptance.
To summarize, they place their true selves in these self-constructed boxes that they then push into the other people's self-constructed boxes, and it never really ends.
It is a neverending series of plastic squares.
A song about internal conflicts.
Another redo of a song that shows up on both "The Red One (Best of the Basement)" and "The Blue One (Studio Recordings)"
Lyrics:
The royal blue cape Over the back of the king it is draped Who's land has been pillaged Who's queen has been raped
And now it's not looking to be a cape but rather a place to hide a quick escape
A place to cower inside his mind Until the answers he cannot find Show themselves through the light of day and tell the king everything is ok
What a lie that has been Only there to balance out the sin That has lead to this revolution That has lead to the new constitution
Now watch the king Watch him as he swings inches from the ground noose to the neck and a lift of the crown not to fuck around not to make a sound Now the villagers have their revenge after decades of looking like a village of fools like a village of fools like a village of fools
If a stranger invites you and your teenaged friends into his soundproofed basement to record a demo, go for it.
