In This Episode, You’ll Hear About Karen Shanaberger has a very robust background in Gastroenterology and she used to be the Quality Assurance Manager at one of the Endoscopy Centers connected to The Oregon Clinic, one of the largest medical practices in the country. While there, she created standardized reporting processes and data collection for four endoscopy centers and four clinics.
In this episode, she shares one of her biggest challenges (hint: it has to do with audits!) and how she overcame it and also breaks down the theoretical and actual payment differences between getting a procedure completed in a hospital outpatient department (HOPD) versus an Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC).
She reviews the ASC Quality Reporting program with us and shares her gratitude that CMS seems to finally be listening to industry feedback. In her own words, “So much has changed since I first took up this work. My first management assignment was managing personal computers as they first entered our environment. Some of the first people I managed are now leaders in the field.
One of my passions is the development of the next generation of IT leaders, especially young people who are beginning their careers or who are beginning to take on leadership roles. I’ve been there: a young mother of two with a full-time management job while a part-time graduate student. I remember the years when I was the only woman at the leadership table.”
