How do you stand out in one of the most competitive job markets in recent memory? What are hiring managers really looking for? And how can you break into your industry when everything seems stacked against new grads?
In this special episode for post-grad marketing students and emerging professionals, we’re joined by Courtney Sebu, HR executive and founder of Shastra Inc., to discuss how to navigate the early stages of your career with clarity, confidence, and strategy. With over two decades of experience in recruiting and leadership consulting, Courtney doesn’t hold back — offering honest, tactical advice on what works now when it comes to landing roles, building your network, and crafting a standout personal brand.
Whether you’re polishing your resume or networking your way into a new industry, this episode is your inside track to HR insights you won’t find in a textbook.
Key Takeaways It’s an employer’s market: With the job market saturated by experienced professionals post-pandemic, it’s tougher than ever for new grads to land roles — but not impossible. * AI is gatekeeping your resume: Many companies use AI tools to filter applications. If you don’t include job-specific buzzwords, you may be auto-rejected in under 5 minutes. * Tailor strategically, not endlessly: Instead of rewriting your resume for every role, build a core version with the right industry keywords to "manipulate" the AI in your favour — ethically. * Networking is your superpower: Referrals and personal introductions are often the only way to get past automated systems and actually get seen by a human recruiter. * Canadian experience bias still exists: Despite legal changes, many private companies still prioritize local experience. Volunteering, internships, and shadowing can help bridge that gap. * Don’t dilute your resume too much: If you have international experience, don’t hide it. Focus instead on contextualizing it for Canadian employers and roles. * Referrals don’t guarantee roles: Even strong recommendations can hit internal company politics or pre-decided hires, which is why persistence and presence matter. * Certifications are optional, not essential: Courtney has built a successful HR career without formal credentials, emphasizing experience and relationships over letters after your name. * AI writing tools are just a start: Use ChatGPT and others to brainstorm ideas, but personalize and humanize your content before submitting anything — static, robotic language is a giveaway. * Your brand = your currency*: How you show up online, how you communicate, and how others perceive you will open more doors than a polished resume alone.

In this episode, we sit down with Julie Savard-Shaw, Executive Director of The Prosperity Project, to explore the transformative power of the Rosie Mentorship Program — a free, bilingual, and virtual initiative designed to support mid-career women on their path to leadership.

We also discuss why mentorship is a two-way street, the critical role of workplace flexibility, and how corporate Canada can take a leading role in creating lasting change.
Whether you’re a mentor, a mid-career woman seeking support, or a ChangeMaker advocating for gender equity in Canada, this conversation is filled with insight, heart, and action.
Topics Covered* The origin and impact of the Rosie Mentorship Program * Why mid-career women often fall through the cracks * Promotion bias, pay gaps, and the “leaky pipeline” * Mentorship as leadership development — for both mentor and mentee * How flexible work and advocacy are reshaping the future of equity * Julie’s vision for a more inclusive Canada

The period of planning, launching and growing a business is a wonderful time in your life.
You get to put into motion the ideas in your head. You get to see it all come together. You get to make it all happen – on your time, using your energy and using your wits.
It will be a time full of excitement, fear and uncertainty all mixed together. Breathe it all in and just keep going, because you’ve made a monumental decision that will forever alter your life – for the better!
Here’s why your choice to enter entrepreneurship is so wonderful:No more boss. This reason kind of speaks for itself. The freedom and independent you will now enjoy as a self-employed person is unlike anything you’ve experienced before as an employee. No set office hours. No one will set appointments in your Outlook schedule. No one will force you to follow company policy or work toward company objectives you don’t support. You control all of those things.
And here’s a perk: you can choose the people you work with – from suppliers, to partners to employees to customers.
No income ceiling.A nice job with a nice cubicle and a nice salary is, well, nice. But it can’t satisfy the individual who wants more financial reward than an employer can provide.
The good news is there’s no income limit as an entrepreneur. You can earn as much money as you want. Very few jobs pay you what you are truly worth. And most millionaires in North America are self-employed.
While you may not be motivated entirely by money or personal wealth, you should take comfort knowing that you are now in the best position to realize new riches – however you define that.
Fulfill your purpose. You’ve likely started your business to pursue a passion. It’s a chance to do what you love to do, every day and all day, for the rest of your life. Being able to apply your talents (whatever they may be) is a gift that most employed people will never get to experience in their lives.
It’s also a chance to fulfil your purpose, or calling. You know what I mean: that “pull” to a certain mission or goal or objective that you just can’t ignore. You recognized a need to do something and decided to pursue it – to become the person you’ve always wanted to be. Some might call it destiny. How exciting is that! Now is your chance to realize your personal and professional dreams by working at something you love to do and become the very best person you can be.
Entrepreneurship will give you the opportunity to self-actualize. It’s a platform to become the ultimate you.
Congratulations on your decision to join almost 3 million Canadians who are also self-employed. It’s truly this country’s hottest career choice – for all of the obvious reasons.
Author BiographyAs host of The Unsure Entrepreneur Podcast, Roger Pierce just loves to talk about entrepreneurship as a career choice and what’s involved in starting and running a small business.
One of Canada’s top small business experts, Roger is an author, speaker, and entrepreneur trainer who has founded 14 small businesses over the past 25 years.

From the opening (and closing) of her coworking office, crafting email magic, to whipping up unique floral creations, good design is at the heart of everything she does.
She had an epiphany in the midst of the pandemic: her dreams were bigger than the work she was doing on her laptop, so she went after ‘em.

Achieving equal pay for equal work is a critical goal for women in the modern workforce. However, the gender pay gap persists, and women need to equip themselves with the tools and strategies to negotiate fair and equitable compensation. In this blog post, we will delve into the importance of negotiating equal pay, discuss common challenges women face, and provide actionable tips to help women advocate for their worth and bridge the pay gap.
UNDERSTANDING THE IMPORTANCE OF NEGOTIATING EQUAL PAY:Equal pay is not just a matter of financial fairness but a fundamental step towards achieving gender equality in the workplace. By negotiating equal pay, women secure their financial well-being and contribute to closing the gender pay gap on a broader scale. It’s a powerful act of self-advocacy that challenges the status quo and sets the stage for future generations of women.
COMMON CHALLENGES IN NEGOTIATING EQUAL PAY:1. Fear of Backlash: Many women worry that negotiating for equal pay will have negative consequences or damage their professional relationships. Overcoming this fear requires a shift in mindset. Remember that negotiating for fair compensation is reasonable and a professional expectation. You can mitigate potential backlash by confidently approaching the negotiation process and emphasizing the value you bring. 2. Lack of Information: Without sufficient knowledge about industry standards and salary ranges, women may struggle to determine their true worth. Researching salary data and talking to professionals in similar positions can provide valuable insights to help you establish a fair and reasonable salary expectation. 3. Underestimating Personal Value: Women often downplay their accomplishments and undervalue their contributions to the organization. Recognize your unique skills, expertise, and the impact you have made. Quantify your achievements whenever possible, as it strengthens your case during negotiations.
TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL NEGOTIATION:1. Prepare Thoroughly: Research is crucial. Understand the salary range for your position and industry, and gather evidence of your accomplishments and contributions. This knowledge will bolster your confidence during negotiations. 2. Articulate Your Value: Communicate your strengths, skills, and accomplishments that have positively impacted the organization. Emphasize your unique value and how it aligns with the organization’s goals and objectives. 3. Practice Assertiveness and Confidence: Approach the negotiation with a confident yet collaborative mindset. Use assertive and clear language, and maintain professional composure throughout the process. Stay focused on achieving fair compensation rather than making it a personal confrontation. 4. Consider Alternative Benefits: If the organization cannot meet your desired salary, explore other aspects of your compensation package that can contribute to your overall satisfaction. This could include additional vacation time, flexible work arrangements, professional development opportunities, or future advancement prospects. 5. Leverage Networks and Mentors: Seek guidance from mentors or professionals who successfully navigate salary negotiations. Their insights and support can provide invaluable advice, boost your confidence, and help refine your negotiation strategy.
BOTTOM LINE:Negotiating equal pay is vital to achieving gender equality and closing the pay gap. By empowering themselves with knowledge, adopting a confident mindset, and leveraging effective negotiation strategies, women can advocate for their worth and make significant strides in their professional lives. Remember, your ability to negotiate fair compensation benefits you personally and contributes to a more equitable future for all women in the workplace.

Welcome to the Time to Thrive Podcast, our guest this week is The Bridge to Fulfillment Founder Blake Schofield. We had a truly insightful conversation on Blake’s journey from successful retail director to career coach helping women transition from unfulfilling careers by creating a bridge to fulfillment® on their terms. Blake and I discuss what it takes to change our career mindset so that you can find work that is filled with purpose, fulfillment, and even financial success. Yes, you can have it all you just have to start by asking for help.
About Our Guest (In her Words):
My name is Blake. I'm a mom of three kids who spent 18 years in Corporate America building, growing and turning around 8 and 9 figure businesses, including a $600 million dollar business at Target corporation & building a business from scratch at Stitch Fix that launched with over 75,000 women on a wait list.
Despite enjoying parts of my career & having a lot of success, I would find myself going through cycles of feeling energized followed by feeling frustrated and unfulfilled.
I seemed to be constantly searching for how I could do fulfilling work while having time for a more fulfilling, less stressful life. As the years progressed and I had kids, I felt myself getting more frustrated and exhausted with the constant demands of my job & the amount of work I had to do that either didn't line up with my values or wasn't work I loved.
I came to realize that the career I was in no longer fit. Despite that, I sat in my job for years knowing that I should be doing something else, something "MORE" but I just didn't know what it was or how to make it happen without taking a big risk.
I felt overwhelmed, drained & stuck — I began to feel like I didn't have control over my life. Work was bleeding into every part of my life.
As the breadwinner, I felt responsible for making sure whatever decision I made would be right for my family...and I felt guilty that I wasn't happy in a career that everyone else thought was the epitome of success.
At the time, I believed that I could figure it out on my own & that the only way was by sacrificing the lifestyle I had worked so hard to achieve. What I came to learn and realize is that I was missing the CLARITY & PLAN to feel like I could move forward with my life, I didn't understand my secret sauce transferable skills or how to align my strengths, skills, & passions to do work that ultimately would allow me to have everything I wanted.
My 20-year personal journey through three career changes, multiple cross-country moves, years of going through the cycle of searching LinkedIn & job boards trying to find the next path for my life is the basis for the work we do every day.

Founder of Women in Biz Network Leigh Mitchell chatted with actor, writer and comedian Jessica Holmes on how depression can affect life, work and business.
Leigh's reflections: As someone who has struggled with depression and anxiety throughout my adult life I was drawn to Jessica's book: Depression: The Comedy because it was the first book that I personally read that discussed what it is like to deal with depression while being self-employed. I was acquainted with Jessica as she was a speaker for Women in Biz Network, but her latest book really goes deep into her story and ultimate recovery. Her honesty about her marriage, life as a parent and being a performer while in the throes of depression really touched me. I am so glad that Jessica has gone on to become an incredible advocate for people who are experiencing depression. Her work around reducing depression stigma can be found in her social media and her keynotes. We hope that employers and loved ones will learn from this interview what is helpful and most importantly what is harmful.
Learn about Jessica Holmes:
Jessica Holmes has brought the house down with her unique brand of comedy, opening for giants such as Ellen DeGeneres, Russell Peters, Jerry Seinfeld, and Oprah Winfrey. Combining stand up, music and improvisation, she honed her skills at Just For Laughs and the world-famous Second City before moving on to television. Her Carol Burnett-style series The Holmes Show and her knack for skewering celebrities like Nikki Minaj, Britney Spears, and Celine Dion have made her a favourite with audiences across the country. Also a wellness advocate, Jessica is known for speaking candidly about her experience with depression. She mixes comedy with a validating message about life’s challenges, and has become a celebrated voice in fighting the stigma surrounding mental health issues in her keynotes. In 2018 she became an ambassador for the Bell Let’s Talk campaign and wrote the hilarious and touching memoir Depression The Comedy. A mother of 2 (and wife of 1), Jessica’s passion is finding the humour in life's imperfections, and turning embarrassments into punchlines.

“Every breath you take
Every move you make
Every bond you break
Every step you take
I’ll be watching you.”
Every step we take leads somewhere. Over the summer my steps led me to stay silent and still. You haven’t heard much from me as I had little to say. I even stayed off social media for the most part which made more time for what I needed.
I am back at it again full swing, and happy to be home but a string of bad luck did visit this week, the good news is I realize this happened for a reason and lessons were learned. I’ll explain more about that in a minute. First I want to talk about my Summer. It was delicious. I read a lot. I bonded with my family and sat around a lot of campfires. One of the books, Hardwiring Happiness by Rick Hanson taught me a lot.
What I learned from this book is our brains are hardwired to hold onto negative experiences and feelings. It is a caveman thing. To feel happier, calmer and more confident we need to hold onto positive experiences and reframe negative ones. I found myself doing this consistently. There is a whole process in the book and it works.
Back to this week: My son got six stitches on his chin, and I broke a rib resulting in two trips to the emergency room in three days.
I felt frustrated and weepy at first as I have no time for this.
But maybe I did need this injury… Doctors orders were to schedule deep breaths once an hour. I found an app that does this and now each hour I hear a little cough from the app as a reminder to take ten deep breaths. If I don’t do this, I could end up with Pneumonia. My ribs hurt a lot and when I can’t get comfortable, the exercise of taking breaths calms me down and for each inhale I think of something positive. Gratitude is a big part of my journey these days.
The next six weeks my body will be recovering. How I spend my time will be very intentional. I am excited by this. I didn’t intend to break a rib to get a little more “me time” but I will take it for what it is.

About Lolly's Book:
Do people see you as the kind of leader you want to be? Are your strongest leadership qualities getting in the way of your greatness? After decades of advising and inspiring some of the most eminent chief executives in the world, Lolly Daskal has uncovered a startling pattern: within each leader are powerful abilities that are also hidden impediments to greatness. She’s witnessed many highly driven, overachieving leaders rise to prominence fueled by well-honed skill sets, only to falter when the shadow sides of the same skills emerge.
Now Daskal reveals her proven system, which leaders at any level can apply to dramatically improve their results. It begins with identifying your distinctive leadership archetype and recognizing its shadow:
■ The Rebel, driven by confidence, becomes the Imposter, plagued by self-doubt.
■ The Explorer, fueled by intuition, becomes the Exploiter, master of manipulation.
■ The Truth Teller, who embraces candor, becomes the Deceiver, who creates suspicion.
■ The Hero, embodying courage, becomes the Bystander, an outright coward.
■ The Inventor, brimming with integrity, becomes the Destroyer, who is morally corrupt.
■ The Navigator, trusts and is trusted, becomes the Fixer, endlessly arrogant.
■ The Knight, for whom loyalty is everything, becomes the Mercenary, who is perpetually self-serving.
Using psychology, philosophy, and her own experience, Daskal offers a breakthrough perspective on leadership. She’ll take you inside some of the most cloistered boardrooms, let you in on deeply personal conversations with industry leaders, and introduce you to luminaries who’ve changed the world. Her insights will help you rethink everything you know to become the leader you truly want to be.

"My best advice to have a life and business based on the Thrive philosophy is to aim at balance in all areas of wellness." According to Melissa's Relational Wellness Wheel, there are eight areas of wellness: Physical, Emotional, Social, Vocational, Sexual, Environmental, Spiritual, and Financial. The goal is not to be perfect in every single area of wellness, because nobody is perfect. However, the goal is to strive towards a balance in these various areas of wellness, and to be mindful of when you feel out of balance so that you can make efforts to remedy that.

Leadership involves being able to tackle new situations and deal with failure, because we don’t always lead others into the known. If your burning desire is to maintain the status quo, go ahead and stick with the safe. But if you want to move the world or even better your organization, you need know how to navigate the uncharted and the scary, so you can bring others confidently with you.
That kind of leadership takes gumption, and one way we can get it is by pushing beyond what we think of as our boundaries in all kinds of ways. Dressing differently, traveling solo, jumping out of a plane, learning to sing – they can all make a person a better leader. By giving ourselves proof of our own courage we give ourselves the confidence to lead others.
Shelagh has spent a lifetime balancing family, work, and pets with her need to do adventuresome things. Learning to fly small planes, riding horseback across the Mongolian steppes, living in the UK, Italy, America, and back to Canada (with kids and pets), and drastically changing her career several times led her to believe she knew something about making adventures happen. Then she started investigating just how she and other women managed it, and realized there were other acts of daring-do – such as singing in a rock band, or wearing pink, or indeed creating Gumption – that were way scarier.
The creation of Gumption has therefore been a very personal journey, as well reflecting the intrepid experiences of all those lovely women whose contribution of wisdom and know-how has made it all possible.
