DIRTYBIRD
You know Dirtybird for dropping basslines and creating smiles on the dance floor since January 2005.
The fun family vibe of the Dirtybird label can be traced back to a free event started in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. In 2003, Christian Martin sacrificed his credit cards and purchased a sound system so he and his friends could play the music they wanted to hear. This new kind of house music went against the smooth vocal house that was popular at the time and derived its influences mostly from hip-hop, drum n bass, and American funk. The free outdoor BBQ party was very rough around the edges but eventually became legendary amongst the people of San Francisco. This event was also a very influential factor in the decision by Claude VonStroke to start the record label in 2005.
Today, Dirtybird has offices in San Francisco and Los Angeles and has expanded into events and tour production. As it grows, the brand continues to expand beyond music into merchandise, licensing and artist management. In 2015, Dirtybird launched the inaugural Dirtybird Campout festival, which has been dubbed “Summer Camp For Adults”, and Dirtybird has been recognized from their achievements by being awarded "Underground Label of the Year" at the International Dance Music Awards, “Label of the Decade” by Mixmag, “Best North American Label” by DJ Mag, and Billboard’s "Top 5 Independent Dance Labels".
Mitch Dodge joins this episode of Dirtybird Radio with a smattering of funky bass and deep beats to move your feet. Expect a few of his freshest releases, some of his favorite selects, and a couple tunes that you've never heard before.
Cafius is a prolific producer, DJ and artist whose tracks have landed him on the international stage with releases on some of the most renowned labels in electronic music. At 15, I discovered electronic music and started crafting my own beats and exploring production. Today, those eight years of technical training form the foundation of my tracks, blending classical discipline with the freedom of the dance floor.What do you use to make your tracks?I work in Ableton Live as my main tool, but my conservatory background always shows up—sometimes I record acoustic guitar or piano and turn those takes into samples. I enjoy experimenting with VST synth plugins and applying mixing techniques I learned from tech‑house masters. I’ve been attempting to play music my whole life, but I started experimenting with digital production in 2015 — making silly remixes, learning to DJ, and producing some original tracks. In 2023, I decided to take it more seriously and commit my creative energy to releasing music consistently, with the hope that each track gets better than the last. I’m a huge fan of house music, so I make the kind of music I want to hear, dance to, and feel something from. My style leans toward high-energy, big sounds, blended with minimal tech house. I’d say my sound is still evolving — definitely follow along and see where it goes.What do you use to make your tracks? Give me a laptop with Ableton and a pair of Beyerdynamic headphones (or AirPods in a pinch), and I can make music anywhere. Outside of my studio, my favorite place to produce is on an airplane — the longer the flight, the better. I build and record the track in Live View, then finalize everything in Session View.How and when did you first discover Dirtybird? Claude VonStroke’s “Who’s Afraid of Detroit” completely broke my brain. It’s just so good — an instant classic that still hits. I’ve been listening to Dirtybird since Beware of the Bird dropped in 2006 and have followed every Claude album since. Artists like Style of Eye, Walker & Royce, the Martin Bros, and Fisher have all had a huge influence on my sound. That’s why getting accepted by Dirtybird feels like such a huge honor — it’s surreal, but also feels like a full-circle moment.Which Dirtybird artist would you want to collaborate with the most? It has to be Claude. His sound is so recognizable and unique — I can always tell when it’s a Claude track. I’d love a peek behind the curtain, if you know what I mean. When I was 10, I was cast as “Boy in Park” in a major film starring Geena Davis and James Gandolfini. Philipp Jung from M.A.N.D.Y. at the Robot Heart art car at Burning Man 2012. I started DJing in around 2005 and a little after that someone who didn't pay their rent at my sisters place left an MPC 1000 behind so she gave that to me and that was what I made my first beat on.
-What do you use to make your tracks?
I mainly use Ableton and I have a few synths and drum machines. When recording or sampling I sometime run the audio through SP404, 303 or even the little Pocket operator KO33 sampler.
-How and when did you first discover Dirtybird?
I got a copy of Claude VonStrokes album beware of the bird on CD when that first came out. Its actually one of the only few CD's I still have that also still has the correct cover with it.

That is a hard question but I think Justin Jay or Ivy Lab
-If your entire life was a movie, what title would best describe you?

Back to the 60's to see a James Brown Concert. I never got to see him live.

The Satin Bower Bird. Because just like the Bower Bird I like to collect a lot of useful little things. Some may call it collecting junk but that is open for interpretation.

-How long have you been creating music? I have been doing music since my youth, but how Polymorphic began to make music in 2008. And the big thing that year was also my remix of The Proxy's "Raven" on Turbo Recordings.
-What do you use to make your tracks? To create music, I used Reason, Ableton, but eventually settled on FL Studio, in this software I feel more free and comfortable.
-How and when did you first discover Dirtybird? Sometime in 2006 I heard tracks "Who's Afraid Of Detroit" and "Deep Throat" by Claude Vonstroke and was very impressed with them. These tracks inspired me to create music.
-Which Dirtybird artist would you want to collaborate with the most? Hah, of course with Claude VonStroke, but I also like a lot of musicians from this label, for example Cour T., Walker & Royce and many others.
-If your entire life was a movie, what title would best describe you? Most likely like this: "What the hell is going on here?"
-What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to? Most of all I remember and liked Prodigy's concert, it was very powerful!
-If you could time travel, where and when would you go? I would go to the future, I'm very interested in how the world will change in two hundred or three hundred years.
-What species of bird best describes you and why? Probably a woodpecker, I can do drums for a track for a very long time and it probably looks like a woodpecker knocking on wood.
-What does Dirtybird mean to you? To be honest, releasing a track on Dirtybird was a very old dream, since I consider this label one of the fundamental and important in tech house music.

-How long have you been creating music? I started playing guitar when I was 13. I got into more electronic music when I started going to shows when I was 18. I fell in love with house music right away and started producing as soon as I could.
-What do you use to make your tracks? Ableton
-How and when did you first discover Dirtybird? I'd have to say what really got me hooked on Dirtybird was when me and my squad went to Lightning in a Bottle in 2015 and Shiba San absolutely killed it!! His set had the crowd going crazy from start to finish. After that I was hooked on that DB sound.
-Which Dirtybird artist would you want to collaborate with the most? Arnold & Lane, I love their style of music. I look to their music for inspiration all the time. Plus I've met them in person a couple of times and they're super awesome people.
-If your entire life was a movie, what title would best describe you? Dude, Where's my car? Go out to a show, come home and after party with the homies till sunrise, then you walk outside and can't remember where you parked the car, walk a block in the wrong direction and then remember you got good parking right out front.
-What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to? Dirtybird Camp Inn!! It was the first show I had been to in a long time because of all the covid restrictions. Pretty sure it was the same for a lot of people, but everyone came to that show ready to party!! It was nuts and weird and entertaining the whole time. I loved being able to go relax in a hotel room walking distance from the stages. It was seriously a perfect time from start to finish.
-If you could time travel, where and when would you go? I think it would be cool to go back and see where house music first originated from. I'd like to see their process with all the old tech they had to use, and play around with all those old school synthesizers. I think we take it for granted sometimes how easy it is to make music on a laptop whenever and wherever we want.
-What species of bird best describes you and why? Rubber Ducky. When I first started partying my friends nicknamed me "Rub a Dub". Rub = Rob and Dub = W = Wilson. It was my DJ name when I first started out. Plus I make bath time more fun
-What does Dirtybird mean to you? Dirtybird has a vibe. It's that weird wonky kind of house music that'll keep you grooving all night long. If you're rolling up to a Dirtybird party you know you are in for a great time and the vibes are gonna be through the roof.

At that time I was still starting out in music production and many friends told me about the label. I always heard about the label because of Bruno Furlan and his songs. -If you could time travel, where and when would you go? If I could time travel I’d go back to the 70s/80s
-What species of bird best describes you and why? If I were a bird I think I would be an Oriole, because I’m pretty shy and quiet until you get to know me and once you do I stand out and am quite noticeable lol

And dirtybird means the world to me, they’ve been my favorite house labels since I got into the music so getting signed by dirtybird is a dream come true, and all the artists are SO talented and super chill, I wanna just get together with all of them and have a good ole time

I attended the second Holy Ship in 2013. My friend brought me to the Dirtybird Disco on ship and I was brainwashed instantly. I actually got off that ship and said, “I want to be a house producer now.”

-How long have you been creating music?
One of my earliest recollections is the first time my mother took me to music class in London where we lived for a few years. I was about 4 years old and I can remember almost everything that has to do with the experience; I remember the percussion I played and the circle of kids around me. It was one of those moments when my consciousness really “came online” for the first time. I was present. Ever since then, my life has revolved around music. I guess my mom picked up on that because she demanded I get some instrument lessons, and whenever I wanted to quit she was like ok then pick up a different instrument. So i studied piano when I was 5 years old and then later the saxophone, drums, guitar, and bass. When I was 16 my dad helped me transform my bedroom into a recording studio with all the acoustic gear and woodwork, I went to like a top musical highschool in israel and formed bands and started collecting vinyls and dj’ed constantly wherever I could. In and out of school. I was hooked.
-What do you use to make your tracks?
I have in my studio quite a bit of external gear and I used to work solely with them but lately I’ve been having less time to really devour my equipment so I’ve been using a lot of ableton own synths and splice and my mpc live to either find new sounds or imitate quickly my beloved gear without having to plug them and it’s actually quite addictive. I mean the super fast workflow of working only with splice and ableton is insane and very inspiring as well.
Like I will go to splice and just type in a word that I feel resonates with my intention at the moment. Random stuff like “flower” “future” “crazy” “cow” haha I donno. And then filter the search and try to look for those sound bites that gets my imagination going. It’s my favorite technique at the moment.
-How and when did you first discover Dirtybird?
Although I’ve been playing a lot on the red axes live shows, I still wasn’t very educated in the electronic dance scene. So only when nala approached me to be on her twitch show tvparty I really became friends with her and learned extensively about the labels body of work.
-Which Dirtybird artist would you want to collaborate with the most?
Well to me the obvious answer is nala. I feel super connected to almost everything she does which didn’t happen to me a lot. I guess its because she comes from a similar musical background then me that is influenced heavily by indie and post punk and by lyric and songwriting which is crucial thing for me. But the more I learn about the label I love a lot of Nikki Nair stuff and a lot of chopped vocal high energy tracks by Claude vonstroke.
-If your entire life was a movie, what title would best describe you?
Haha perfect question. I guess dumb and dumber meets Groundhog Day meets Aladdin meets spice girls the movie meets clueless.
-What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to?
Beatfoot live at the exit festival. Haha but really a few shows come to mind. When I was 19 I saw daft punk 2007 alive tour. It was such a great experience for me to see how lights and sound and visuals can lift ur experience. It was euphoric. And then I was on 2016 in primavera and saw patti smith and I cried the entire show. The authenticity of her energy is insane. Also lcd soundsystem shows changed my life and also GFOTY boiler room from 2016 is my bible.
-If you could time travel, where and when would you go?
I’d go back 2 minutes ago and add the movie aristocats
-What species of bird best describes you and why?
oh i would have to say big bird from sesame for sure!

-What does Dirtybird mean to you? DIRTYBIRD, it means a lot to me, since the first time I identified myself, it was love at first sight, especially now that I'm part of this big family, I feel speechless.

-How long have you been creating music? I’d been in bands when I was younger, and as Carapace started I making electronic music at the start of the pandemic in my girlfriend’s kitchen.
-What do you use to make your tracks? I record most things on an old acoustic guitar, then process and resample until they sort of sound more like a synthesiser. I do all my arranging in Logic Pro X.
-How and when did you first discover Dirtybird? Probably around 2017 having heard the Barclay Crenshaw album, and started keeping an eye from there.

-What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to? Young Fathers in Cardiff. Clwb Ifor Bach is like a nuclear bunker with no windows, and low ceilings so you can really get into it.
-If you could time travel, where and when would you go? I’d go about 100 years in to the future. Don’t know why, to see what music we’d be listening to.

A collaboration with the boss Claude VonStroke was something Lubelski knew he had to do around the 'Happy Accidents' project, he just had no idea what direction it might take. Definitely Papa Claude, for sure. But I would say my style is most influenced by Ardalan and Justin Martin.

-What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to?
That's a super hard one, I love live music maybe a toss-up between Soulwax live and Deltron 3030 with a live Orchestra. There are just so many.
-If you could time travel, where and when would you go?
Honestly back to the late 80s, early 90s. Anywhere in So Cal, I have a soft spot in my heart for that era.

Well, I guess the House Sparrow, for obvious reasons. But also because they are normally not native to the area and frequently take "dust baths" which reminds me of getting dirty in the festival crowds.

Dirtybird means family, I mean I felt like part of the flock immediately. Just being a fan and going to events connecting with people and friendships being made. How accessible the artists are to the fans really feels like a community. After placing 3rd in 2 of the last contests and this release definitely solidifies my feeling of being part of the team.

-How long have you been creating music?
Around 20 years now, but I really had to step back on things, for around 6 years to focus on my glassblowing career, which needed my focus and is a big love of mine. Then I put all my free time into leveling up my production skills, to try and come back as strong as possible upon reentry to the musical realm.
-What do you use to make your tracks?
I was a Cubase guy for my first decade, then made the switch to Ableton. I have been super happy with that choice, I have lots of controllers and some hardware synth's, but I do most things in the box.
-How and when did you first discover Dirtybird?
It was at the beginning, in 2006. Some DnB friends from Denver all went to Las Vegas for a bachelor party, and happened to find a Drum and Bass party, to our delight! Halfway thru the party, a nice lady from San Francisco came over and chatted us up, telling us DnB is her main thing, but her friends just started a house label started by DnB heads, and we needed to check it out, they were putting out the heaters, and it was starting to gain some real traction in the bay area.
I never could find house I was into, but once and awhile I would hear something at a party that resonated with me, but had no idea where to look for it. When we got back to Denver I found it on Beatport, and bought all the tunes, and was instantly hooked! Dirtybird is the label that made me fall in love with the sound of house, so a massive thank you for that!
-Which Dirtybird artist would you want to collaborate with the most?
Barclay/Claude on both sides of his musical spectrum, and Steve Darko would be at the top of my list, but I am super into everyone on the label!
-If your entire life was a movie, what title would best describe you?
I guess Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, I feel like I get into as wild of times as was in the movie, except for I try to not get as sloppy as them, lol.
-What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to?
Tough question! I would put it like this: Burning Man all of the 15 years I have gone were the best events by far! Best festival would be: the Oregon eclipse festival. Best Concert I would say: Tipper Red Rocks.

I would have loved to check out, the whole 60's-70's the hippie then into disco era. So probably then.

The Bird of Paradise, I love the dance they do!

-How long have you been creating music? Andreas: I have been creating music since the late 90s. That’s been crazy times here in Berlin. Of course my style has changes a lot since then, partly to the technical possibilities, partly because I have found myself and what I want to be more and more in my music. Also a reason why I run so many different musical projects.
Beth: I have been a music lover and raver for most of my life, but I started to discover the process behind really making my own music maybe 8 years ago.
-What do you use to make your tracks? Andreas: My studio and Synth collections is growing since 20 years. Stuff is coming and going and it always depends where I put my fingers on first. Steinbergs Cubase has been my software since I started. I have followed the development of this software since the early beginnings, and think this also formed my creative work a lot.
Beth: I use the software Ableton. It is actually quite funny because it is pretty different to the one Andreas uses, and I have even had Ableton tutors wondering how our relationship was still working with him on Cubase and me on Ableton. Besides that I think my MVP as hardware is the Model D and the TB-303.
-How and when did you first discover Dirtybird? Andreas: One of my most played tunes back in the days was probably Claude VonStrokes „Turbosteppa“. Since that time I’m flashed by the fresh and innovative sound of the label which is still completely different from all the stuff happening over here in Europe.
Beth: We have both known and loved the label for a long time. And of course played a lot of the music that has been released here. Dirtybird has a very unique sound, there is no one like it.
-Which Dirtybird artist would you want to collaborate with the most? Andreas: Oh there are actually a lot and it’s hard to pick one. I’ve always been a big fan of Ardalan’s productions for example. Walker & Royce, Steve Darko, Kevin Knapp, Claude, Will Clarke or Justin Jay inspired me a lot in the past.

-How long have you been creating music? I started messing around with DAWs roughly 10 years ago while in middle school. I've been more seriously creating music for about 3 years.
-What do you use to make your tracks? I use Ableton on my PC, some MIDI controllers (M-AUDIO 49 and AKAI MPK 25), my voice if I'm feeling weird, and random items laying around my room as auxiliary percussion.
-How and when did you first discover Dirtybird? Dirtybird was first on my radar when "Function" by Ardalan and Justin Martin landed in my "Discover Weekly" playlist on Spotify in 2016. A few months after that, I walked into Chipotle to get a barbacoa burrito and heard a weird funky track. I pulled out Shazam and learned it was "The Greasy Beat - Natural Funk Mix" by Claude VonStroke. That's when I got hooked on Dirtybird.

-How and when did you first discover Dirtybird? I discovered Dirtybird when back to 2014 I heard “Okay” by Shiba San in a shoe shop in London, I instantly felt in love with that track!
-Which Dirtybird artist would you want to collaborate with the most? I’d say Walker & Royce but I’d be super happy to collaborate with other DB artists such as Claude VonStroke, Black V Neck, Omnom or Will Clarke.

Steve Darko kicks off 2021 with a smoking hot EP off his upcoming debut album “Midnight Swim.” As Dirtybird’s first release of 2021, we couldn't be happier to represent one of our most talented producers.
The EP is a double A-side. featuring A1 “Descending,” a hypnotizing array of ascending and descending harmonies and A2, “Red” an acid-tinged monster that harkens backs to old school vibes featuring the vocals of Dirtybird’s freshest new talent, Nala.

We end this crazy, whirlwind year of 2020 with an absolute banger, Holt 88’s “Brack Down”. The young Brazilian artist is a regular on Dirtybird compilations and the Birdfeed, and this single is the perfect way to cap off the most insane year of our lifetimes.
Wyatt Marshall has been a part of the Dirtybird family for quite a few years. Claude enlisted him as his studio assistant and producer/co-host of Claude’s Birdhouse radio show, which turned into their collaboration, ‘Youngblood’, that appeared on his album in 2020.

Birmingham's Marc Spence has been a friend of Claude VonStroke since his very early visits to the UK. On every trip to the famed city, Marc always said he would get a track on Dirtybird. Years later this dream has come true with the “Mooda Koopa” EP, and it was worth the wait. The main single "Moody Koopa" is superior - one of those rare tunes that stops you in your tracks. The second single, “They Wanna”, compliments the vibe of the EP, reminiscent of Robag Whrume's classic "Dopamin" with twisted bass synths and tough drums. Welcome to Dirtybird, Marc!
Cour T., the budding prodigy out of Brazil, continues to keep us in awe with his creativity. He’s back on Dirtybird with “Dope Farm”, two peculiar productions that are as eccentric as they are funky. Off-beat shuffles, ethereal sounds, bouncy subs, and rhythms that sound like cascading zippers, make up the title track and “Escape From The Barn”. So unexpected and so good.
In a reality that wasn’t too long ago, we’d all be packing up our tents and supplies and headed out for our favorite weekend of the year, Dirtybird Campout. Well unless you’re listening to this on another planet (we wish we were there with you), we all know how 2020 turned out.
But in keeping with the spirit of Campout, we still have our game face on and presenting a 7 day virtual festival on our recently launched Dirtybrd TV channel along with our annual compilation, “Couchout”.

We’ve had a lot of unique collaborations on the label, but it’s not every day that we get three top Dirtybird artists that come together in the studio for one super-sized track. Yet, that’s exactly what happened with “Drummer Loco” from Mat.Joe, Kevin Knapp and Maximono. Living in the same city of Berlin helps, as these three took advantage of the geography and were able to pump out this amazingly funky jam.
