In a political world world gone crazy with conflict, the Word of God stands in bold contrast. Proverbs declares ‘it is the glory of a man to overlook an offense.’ There is an old legend that speaks of Hercules and his encounter with a strange animal on a narrow road. Hercules strikes the weird animal with his club and continues down the road. Soon the animal overtakes him, but now it’s three times as large as it was before. Hercules strikes it with speed and fury, but the more he clubs the beast, the larger it grows. Then Pallas, the Titan [the little g] god of war appears to Hercules and warns him to stop. “The monster’s name is Strife,” he said. “Let it alone and it will soon become shrink down to nothing.” This is valuable advice for those of Jesus followers who wish to engage in verbal eye for an eye conflict. Overlook the offense, only then does strife cease.1 We’re talking the negative impact of being a contentious person. Carnality isn’t a comfortable topic for followers of Jesus, and it becomes even more challenging when we talk about “crucifying” it. Yet, crucifying our carnality is key to a truly happy life. The Bible lays out the keys to real life in Jesus, and who doesn’t want that kind of genuine happiness? The problem arises when there’s a mixture of affections. Many love Jesus, but also indulge in the sins of the world. This creates misery, and happiness evades them. Francis Chan said, “It’s like loving lemonade and Frappuccino and drinking from both instead of one or the other. It will make you sick. Loving the world and loving God will make you miserable.”1 Some things just don’t mix, like oil and water. While some things complement each other, other mixtures are toxic. The interests of the world and God are contradictory; spiritual life and carnality are the same way. They are mutually exclusive. First Corinthians 10:21 states, “You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too.” Therefore, the path to real happiness and genuine spirituality involves cutting off the carnal component – what the Bible calls “crucifying.” This week’s Light on Life podcast tackles this very subject: “How to Crucify Carnality and Live a Happy Life.”

If you need one that is exactly 4 inches, you’ll need an exact measurement. A random measurement is not effective when you need to be precise. Do you live your life randomly? What are the marks of a mature Christian believer? The Spirit enabled Joseph to interpret puzzling dreams and to withstand the hostility of his brothers and sensual temptations in Egypt. The prophets declared the Spirit as righteousness and felt the Spirit within them. The Spirit enabled David to conquer one crisis after another. The Spirit of God devastated Saul of Tarsus and later cleansed and commissioned him to proclaim the gospel. Sustained by the Holy Spirit in the wilderness, Jesus came to His hometown of Nazareth and, standing up in the familiar synagogue, declared: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach” (Luke 4:18).’1 You see, it’s the Spirit, the Holy Spirit of God that’s the common denominator. How can God’s spirit be in your spirit? A.W. Tozer offered this explanation. One quality belonging to the Holy Spirit, of great interest and importance to every seeking heart, is penetrability. He can penetrate matter, such as the human body; He can penetrate mind; He can penetrate another spirit, such as the human spirit. He can achieve complete penetration of and actual intermingling with the human spirit. He can invade the human heart and make room for Himself without expelling anything essentially human. The integrity of the human personality remains unimpaired. Only moral evil is forced to withdraw. The metaphysical problem involved here can no more be avoided than it can be solved. How can one personality enter another? The candid reply would be simply that we do not know, but a near approach to an understanding may be a simple analogy borrowed from the old devotional writers of several hundred years ago. We place a piece of iron in a fire and blow up the coals. At first we have two distinct substances, iron and fire. When we insert the iron in the fire we achieve the penetration of the fire by the iron. Soon the fire begins to penetrate the iron and we have not only the iron in the fire but the fire in the iron as well. They are two distinct substances, but they have co-mingled and interpenetrated to a point where the two have become one.1 The human spirit is the essential part of your being. You know faith and prayer are two marvelous twins in God’s economy. Last week, I thought we were finished with our series on the Holy Spirit. But yet, there is one more area the Lord wants us to look at together and that’s the Holy Spirit’s involvement with us in prayer. Jesus mentioned a phrase that we want to examine today and that’s ’the House of Prayer.’ There are some organizations that have taken these and actually put together prayer teams that bear the name House of Prayer. Here is the testimony of one such group. “God is currently doing wonderful things through small clusters of Christians who are interceding for their neighbors in Houses of Prayer. A House of Prayer is two or more believers who gather to release God’s power upon their neighbors through prayer and to convey His blessing through deeds of love and kindness. A House of Prayer may be a nuclear family praying in its home. It may be Christian neighbors who don’t actually meet together but network their prayer efforts. Or it may be neighborhood believers who meet regularly for prayer. The House of Prayer strategy comes out of Paul’s charge in 1 Timothy 2:1–4: “I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone.” Everyone includes neighbors, especially nonChristians, because “God our Savior wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.” Houses of Prayer are attractive today because the method is so simple. If you have neighbors, if you detest Satan’s influence, and if you can devote 15 minutes or more a week to intercession, you are a House of Prayer candidate. Houses of Prayer can be started anywhere.1 This effort is rather structured. Today, I’m going to home in on something not quite as structured but powerfully effective. The Temple of God is our focus as we continue our series on the Holy Spirit in John fourteen through sixteen. We’ve covered the Holy Spirit in us as Jesus followers. Manifesting God’s Glory — God’s very Presence sometimes to a remarkable and unforgettable degree. There’s some powerful life changing truths here. Podcast: Light on Life Season Eleven Episode Forty-Three

John 16 unveils for us a work of the Spirit of God in connection with the lost that is not often accounted for in our thinking as Jesus followers. Yet, Jesus laid it for us in plain language what the Holy Spirit of God would do when he came from heaven to earth. Here’s an example of what I’m talking about. Many years ago there was a pastor of a church in Alabama, he was preaching a revival in the church. On Sunday night the service had been on radio. This pastor had preached a simple sermon on the plan of salvation. On Monday afternoon he was calling on some of the families on the other side of the city. Suddenly the thought crossed his mind, “Go to the church.” He was to meet the guest singer there at four o’clock, so brushing it aside he continued his planned visitation. But the thought continued. “Go to the church.” Finally the thought became so persistent, with seemingly no purpose in doing so, that he returned to the church building. The church secretary had the afternoon off so he was there alone. In a few moments he heard someone at the office door. Turning, he saw a young woman. She asked if he was the pastor. When he told her that he was, she asked, “Will you tell me how to be saved?” This pastor and this young woman sat on the front pew of the auditorium as she unfolded her story. She lived in a boarding house with her husband. For some time she had been having an adulterous affair with her husband’s best friend. After dinner on the previous evening, all the boarders were visiting in the large living room. The radio was on. Hearing a few words of this pastor’s sermon, she sat down before the radio on a small stool, turned the volume down low, and listened to the service. At the close of the sermon, she was under conviction by the Holy Spirit. She decided to seek this pastor out to find out how to be saved. In simple language he told her how to receive Christ as her Savior. That night in the revival service she made a public profession of her faith in Christ, and later was baptized. She became a faithful Christian and an active church member. Just suppose she had not been listening to the radio. Just suppose that this pastor’s sermon had not been on the plan of salvation. Or suppose that she had brushed it off. Suppose that he had not gone to the church like he was prompted to go. Like, what if he over rode that nudge he had. Or that she had come and found no one there. But, none of these ‘what if’s’ took place. The Holy Spirit guided the events and led this young woman to Jesus for her salvation and God’s glory!1 Isn’t that a great story! The Holy Spirit convicted, this woman convincing her of her need of Jesus. This specific work of the Spirit is what we’re going to be looking at in today’s podcast. That’s why we entitled this ‘How the Holy Spirit Deals with a Lost World.’ All on this week’s Light on Life.

Today, we dive into the subject of the teaching work of the Holy Spirit in a Jesus-followers life. God communicates with His kids. He leads and guides them into all truth and reality. But, how does He do that? One writer offered these thoughts along this line. He said, “The Spirit-to-spirit conversation that characterizes hearing from God are described in many ways. Listen to how the Bible describes God speaking.
To Samson: “The Spirit of the Lord began to stir him while he was in Mahaneh Dan” (Judges 13:25). To David: “He gave him the plans of all that the Spirit had put in his mind for the courts of the temple” (1 Chronicles 28:12). To Simeon: “Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts” (Luke 2:27). To Jesus: “Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted” (Matthew 4:1). To the apostles: “The Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say” (Luke 12:12). To Paul: “Compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem” (Acts 20:22). To us: “The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children” (Romans 8:16). We often use similar language as the Bible: “The Spirit led me to…” At other times, we may describe God’s inner messages as a nudge an inner voice, a prompting, an impression, a check in my spirit, a deep knowing, a weight. Perhaps you’ve heard someone say, ‘I was suddenly prodded to notice or I was reminded of or I sensed.’ Maybe it was, ‘This thought popped into my head or this verse came to mind or I’ve had this nagging, persisting thought, or I couldn’t shake the impression that.’ The point is, God does speak to us personally, specifically, today. We may have many ways of expressing that—some of them shaped by our spiritual pilgrimage, church environment, and so on—but the wondrous truth is the same: We have heard from God!1 The Holy Spirit of God will communicate and teach you. We’re continuing this week on how the Holy Spirit works in us and why we need to be in the know concerning that. You know the more we know, the better we are able to cooperate with God in His great plan. One such area where the Holy Spirit works in us is to show us how and what we should pray for as we ought. You know there is a great gospel song that says, “No one ever cared for me like Jesus.” But in Romans 8:26, Scripture says, “No one ever prayed for me like the Holy Spirit.” How many times have you cried out to God but were at a loss for words? God plainly says there is hope even in those times: the Holy Spirit not only knows what needs to be said, He says it for you [He intercedes for you]. As the following story shows, calling on the right person is the key to solving your problems. One day Sue’s television quit working properly. She called the repair shop to report the problem, but got frustrated trying to explain what was happening. All she knew was that her television wasn’t working right and needed to be fixed. When the repairman arrived, he took off the back of the television and examined it for a few minutes. Then he said, “Ma’am, what you’ve got here is … blah, blah, blah,” and rattled off a string of strange terms. “I’m going to call the store to see if we have these parts in stock.” After the repairman talked with the parts manager, Sue overheard him say, “Great! I’ll pick up the parts and fix the television this afternoon.” Later that day, Sue’s television was as good as new, even though she had no idea what the repairman had done. She knew enough, however, to ask for help. The repairman and the parts manager understood the problem and Sue’s need was taken care of because these two men knew the problem and what it would take to fix it. This is exactly what the Holy Spirit does for believers. Sometimes, all we can do is call for help. We don’t even know what to ask for. When we don’t know how to pray, the Holy Spirit not only understands our problems, but He also carries our problems to the Heavenly Father, speaking in a language that only they understand. The next time words fail you in prayer, remember that the Holy Spirit is right there with you—interceding in prayer for you.1 Prayer is just one of the areas where the Holy Spirit works huge in our lives. You know, there are other areas and that’s why our focus today is Why You Need To Know What Jesus Said about The Holy Spirit Within, all on this week’s Light on Life.

How the Holy Spirit Works in the life of a believer is our focus this today as we continue to look at John fourteen, fifteen, and sixteen. You understand that from John thirteen onward, that is the last nine chapters up through chapter twenty-one center on the last two weeks of Jesus life. When you understand that Jesus handpicked and groomed these disciples to take His place because He was going back to the Father, you will realize that the information He shares becomes extra vital in nature. Jesus talked a great deal about the Holy Spirit to these men. Just as they had worked with Jesus in ministry so now they were going to work with the Holy Spirit in a similar way. One of the things that Jesus wanted His disciples to know is that the same Holy Spirit that came upon Him in Matthew 3:16 and was responsible for the miracles in Jesus ministry would now come to settle down in the disciples. The indwelling Holy Spirit or the Holy Spirit within a believer is the topic today. One writer said the following concerning Him, the Holy Spirit. “Apart from the work of the Holy Spirit we are helpless to fulfill the holiness expected of us because of our relationship to a holy God. Norman Harrison describes the results of this process: This indwelling Spirit, who is one with our spirit, is more than a presence with us. He is a moulding, transforming power. To the end of Jesus’ ministry, His followers, even His remained unstable, cowardly and undependable. When, however, the Spirit was come, these same men became at once the embodiment of fidelity, courage and conviction. True, Jesus had left them, but His Spirit within made them as new men. So does He desire to work in every believer. Amen to these words — Emphasis on the word ‘IN.’ This is well said today. We need to recognize how He moves in us and so that’s why we’re talking “How The Holy Spirit Works In Your Life,” all on this week’s Light On Life.

The Bible informs us that there are three dimensions of man: spirit, soul, and body. We also know that the Holy Spirit of God indwells all believers. So what is the communication like between God who is a spirit and man? It’s somewhat like the communication that occurs with radios, TV, or WiFi. There must be a link between the receiver and the transmitter. When we listen to a broadcast, there are many sound waves all around us, but the only way for us to become aware of them is to have an appropriate receiver able to catch them and make them audible. We would never know that anyone was talking to us from a distance if we expected our heads to pick up the sound waves. There is only one way in which man can know God, and that is through man’s own spirit. God is a Spirit and can be known only by a spirit. We must not expect to feel Him with our fingers or see Him with our physical eyes. It cannot be done. Podcast: Light on Life Season Eleven Episode Thirty-Eight

This week, we delve further into the depths of the Word as we explore the profound love of God and the overwhelming joy of the Lord. In a world filled with conflict, both on a global scale such as wars, and on a more intimate level like internal political turmoil, the message of love and joy is incredibly relevant and crucial. We have previously discussed the concept of Vine life and the importance of abiding in Jesus, focusing on the initial seven verses of John fifteen. Now, our discussion expands to encompass verse eight and delves into the aspects of love and joy that are integral to abiding in Him. The celebrated American poet James Weldon Johnson began his work “The Creation” with a striking scene: And God stepped out on space,and He looked around and said: “I’m lonely—I’ll make me a world.” These lines are lovely if seen simply as poetry. Yet they reflect a fundamental theological error. [Here’s at least one point we need to make. Don’t just swallow everything because it sounds nice. Stay with the Word.] God has never been lonely. Quite the contrary. From before all eternity, God has enjoyed the mysterious communion we know as the blessed Trinity—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Each of these three divine Persons within the Godhead loves and delights in the other two in perfect, unbroken fellowship. So God has never needed anyone else; the Father, Son, and Spirit have never been alone. Why, then, did they create a world? [Well, God is love First John 4:8 tells us that and so all His actions are clothed in love because that’s who He essentially is.] [Now,] we may never know all the reasons, [God created Planet Earth] but [since He is love, love is one and] at least one [other] is clear. [This writer says] For the pure joy of it.1 Love and joy, what a combo and what a marvelous connection to Jesus. The Link Between Love, Joy, And Abiding In Jesus, that’s our focus on this week’s Light on Life.

We are to that point in John’s gospel where Jesus makes what is to us one of the most outstanding of Bible promises: a vehicle by which prayer is answered one-hundred-percent of the time. If you haven’t experienced answers to prayer on this level, then this podcast is for you. Andrew Murray, the famous Scottish born, South African preacher, a prolific author of 240 books wrote the following on the subject of answered prayer. He said: A beautiful little book, Expectation Corners, tells us of a King who prepared a city for some of his poor subjects. Not far from them were large storehouses, where everything they could need was supplied if they but sent in their requests. But on one condition—they should be on the outlook for the answer, so that when the kings’ messengers came with the answers to their petitions, they should always be found waiting and ready to receive them. The sad story is told of one despondent, one who never expected to get what he asked, because he was too unworthy. One day he was taken to the king’s storehouses, and there, to his amazement, he saw, with his address on them, all the packages that had been made up for him and sent. There was the garment of praise, and the oil of joy, and the eye-salve, and so much more; they had been to his door, but found it closed; he was not on the outlook. From that time on he learned the lesson Micah would teach us: “I will look to the Lord; I will wait for the God of my salvation; my God will hear me” (Mic. 7:7).1 Our God will hear us, that’s a Bible fact and the reality that He will answer is also a Bible fact that Jesus referenced in John fifteen. And, that’s the reason we are focusing today on the subject ‘How Your Prayers Can Be Answered One Hundred Percent’ all on this week’s Light on Life.

Purpose, God’s purpose, that is, is what we want to take a look at this week. On the heels of this idea on purpose comes the following illustration. The guest was a body builder a while back on “The Merv Griffin Show,” the guest was a bodybuilder. During the interview, Merv asked, “Why do you develop those particular muscles?” The bodybuilder stepped forward and flexed a series of well-defined muscles from chest to calf. The audience applauded. “What do you use all those muscles for?” Merv asked. Again, the muscular specimen flexed, and biceps and triceps sprouted to impressive proportions. “But what do you USE those muscles for?” Merv persisted. The body builder was bewildered. He didn’t have an answer other than to display his well-developed frame. I was reminded that our spiritual exercises—Bible study, prayer, reading Christian books, listening to Christian radio and tapes—are also for a purpose. They’re meant to strengthen our ability to build God’s kingdom, not simply improve our pose before an admiring audience.1 I like this story; it shows that we need to be intentional about our life and our purpose in God. The fact that we need Jesus goes without saying. We need Him for salvation, that’s the gospel but the need doesn’t stop with salvation. If after coming to Jesus, we aspire to build the Kingdom, if our heart yearns to do anything great for God, we still need Jesus. He boldly declared in John’s gospel that apart from Jesus, disconnected from the vine, we can do nothing. We have been looking at ‘vine life’ the past couple of podcasts and this week is no different. In studying further along this line, I ran into this tremendously insightful testimony. This gentleman declared that two years ago, worn out by three years of spiritual battle, I found myself asking the question: “Jesus, if Your Spirit abides in me in the person of the Holy Spirit, who is my comforter, why do I so often feel alone and You seem so far away?” What came to me in response were Jesus’ words in Jn. 15:5: “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”

Jesus was saying, “Living spiritually requires something more than just not sinning or doing good works. In order to live in the kingdom of heaven, you must abide in Me. Your identity is in Me.” If I’m not abiding in Jesus, then where is it that I abide? I asked myself.

I began to notice that when I was tired or anxious, there were certain sentences I would say in my head that led me to a very familiar place. The journey to this place would often start with me walking around disturbed, feeling as if there was something deep inside that I needed to put into words but couldn’t quite capture. I felt the “something” as an anxiety, a loneliness, and a need for connection with someone. If no connection came, I would start to say things like “Life really stinks. Why is it always so hard? It’s never going to change.” If no one noticed that I was struggling and asked me what was wrong, I found my sentences shifting to a more cynical level: “Who cares? Life is really a joke.”

Surprisingly, I noticed by the time I was saying those last sentences, I was feeling better. The anxiety was greatly diminished. My “comforter,” my abiding place, was cynicism and rebellion.

From this abiding place, I would feel free to use some soul cocaine—a violent video with maybe a little sexual titillation thrown in, perhaps having a little more alcohol with a meal than I might normally drink—things that would allow me to feel better for just a little while. I had always thought of these things as just bad habits. I began to see that they were much more; they were spiritual abiding places that were my comforters and friends in a very spiritual way; literally, other lovers.

The final light went on one evening when I read Jn. 15:7 in The Message. Peterson translates Jesus’ words on abiding this way: “If you make yourselves at home with me and my words are at home in you, you can be sure that whatever you ask will be listened to and acted upon.” Jesus was saying in answer to my question, “I have made My home in you, Brent. But you still have other comforters you go to. You must learn to make your home in Me.” I realized that my identity had something to do with simply “staying at home.1 Can you say wow! to this insightful story? In John fifteen, Jesus moves on from His “I am the true Vine declaration” and concentrates some of His focus on the concept of fruit bearing and abiding. What’s exciting about this is that learning to abide leads to great things for the Kingdom of God. Abiding in Christ will always produce fruit, even though it is not always apparent. Here is the story of a man who produced glorious fruit in a very unspectacular way. A century and a half ago there died a humble minister in a small village in Leicestershire, England. He had never attended college and had no degrees. He was merely a faithful village minister. In his congregation was a young cobbler to whom he gave special attention, teaching him the Word of God. This young man was later to be renowned as William Carey, one of the greatest missionaries of modern times. This same minister had a son, a boy whom he taught faithfully, and constantly encouraged. The boy’s character and powers were profoundly affected by his father’s life. That son was Robert Hall, the mightiest public orator of his day, whose sermons influenced the decisions of statesmen and whose character was as saintly as his preaching was phenomenal. [By comparison,] it seemed that the village pastor [had] accomplished little. There were no spectacular revivals, but his faithful witness and godly life had much to do with giving India its Carey and England its Robert Hall. You do not have to be famous, wealthy, or even educated to faithfully abide in Christ. God expects every believer to live for Him wherever He has placed him in life—regardless of the circumstances. Keep on abiding in Jesus —who knows who you will reach for Him.1 We are talking about the in’s and out’s of remaining connected to the Vine in this podcast entitled, ‘Why It’s Amazing For You To Abide In Jesus’ all on this week’s Light on Life.

You will see what a great blessing it is for Jesus to be the Vine. Let’s talk about vines for a moment. Once, a young woman, a great lover of flowers, had set out a rare vine at the base of a stone wall. It grew vigorously, but it did not seem to bloom. Day after day she cultivated it and tried every possible way to coax it to bloom. One morning, as she examined the vine disappointedly, her invalid neighbor called to her and said. “You cannot imagine how much I have been enjoying the blooms of that vine you planted.” The owner followed her neighbor’s gaze and on the other side of the wall was a mass of blooms. The vine had crept through the crevices and produced flowers on the other side. How often we think our efforts are thrown away because we do not see fruit! We need to learn that in God’s service our prayers, our toil, our crosses are never in vain. They will bear fruit and hearts will receive blessings and joy, sometimes, somewhere.1 I’m telling you this ‘vine thing’ is a ‘great thing.’ Why Jesus Is the Vine Is Superior News— that’s our focus on this week’s Light on Life.

Podcast: Light on Life Season Eleven Episode Thirty-Two

Recently, I came upon a story that illustrates how Satan’s broken power over followers of Jesus. The story goes like this: “While visiting Grand Coulee Dam, my family and I were surprised to see that the visitor’s center was dark. It was a sunny day, so we thought the center might have tinted windows, but as we got closer, we realized no lights were on. We went in and saw that none of the displays were working. It soon became clear that there was no power to the center. Due to a technical difficulty, the visitor’s center that sat only hundreds of feet from a hydroelectric dam had no power. How could something be so close to the power source yet not be “plugged in”?1 Now, you can take this illustration a number of different directions. You can focus on the ‘plugged in part’ — that we need to plug into God’s power and that would certainly be right and true. But, how about looking at this from another point of view. What if we saw that the power source is evil. What if I choose to stay disconnected from evil because as Jesus followers we are living in the world but not of it — believers who say, ‘No! Satan has no hold on me — I will not connect to the negative power that’s seemingly all around? I will stay disconnected. Jesus lived this way — he spoke to his disciples one day about this very thing. That conversation is recorded in John fourteen. We are going to take a look at it today. “Why Satan’s Broken Control Over Your Life Means You’re Free.” That’s our focus on this week’s Light on Life.

Peace is something almost everyone yearns for. Some have found the source of it while others reach for it while searching blindly in the dark. Peace is the fruit of love.1 That’s what one writers said that peace is. I agree that peace is a commitment — but it’s a commitment to a person not a cause. “Being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” is how the scripture reads in Romans five. Those last five words, ‘through our Lord Jesus Christ’ is the difference maker. Everything good and righteous starts and ends with Jesus. He is the Prince of Peace. Today, our topic of discussion revolves around education, particularly a remarkable kind known as Holy Spirit Education. Education is a highly valued aspect in society, sought after by parents for their children and employers for their employees. However, today we will delve into the kind of learning that comes only from the Spirit of God. Let’s take a moment to acknowledge the incredible journey of Francis Asbury, who started as a humble peasant from Staffordshire and, at the age of eighteen, became a Methodist local preacher. At twenty-one, he was appointed as an itinerant evangelist by John Wesley. For forty-five years, he tirelessly worked in America, traveling around five thousand miles each year on horseback, often earning less than 20 dollars annually. Despite his hardships, he successfully converted many, established Methodist class meetings and societies, and eventually founded the Methodist Episcopal Church, which now boasts over five million members. Asbury’s dedication to education was evident in his daily routine, waking up at four in the morning to teach himself Latin, Hebrew, and Greek, and committing to reading at least one hundred pages of literature every day. 1 While impressive, this type of education, focused on language and literature, is not what Jesus referred to when discussing the Holy Spirit. As one writer aptly stated, “You can lead a man up to the university, but you can’t make him think.” 2 The education provided by the Holy Spirit, however, will undoubtedly stimulate deep thought and introspection. One topic Jesus discussed with His disciples in John 14 is the manifestation of Jesus in the life of a believer. Tony Evans shared a powerful illustration to explain this concept. He stated that when a woman becomes pregnant, it is a result of an intimate encounter in private. This encounter becomes evident in public months later. If nothing is seen in public, it indicates that nothing happened in private. God desires for new life in Him to be made visible. He wants the life of Jesus, which occurred thousands of years ago, to be experienced by believers. He wants the intimacy of one’s relationship with Christ to bring forth the power of His presence, regardless of their circumstances. He wants their joy to be complete as His presence becomes evident in their lives. How can one know when this life is manifested? Some pregnant women experience morning sickness, but it does not diminish the joy of the new life. Some struggle with sleep, but it does not take away from the joy of the new life. Some have difficulty walking, but it does not diminish the joy of their new life. When life is manifested, it surpasses any inconveniences they may have endured. Many Christians seek happiness. They desire a better home, a nicer car, or improved circumstances. There is nothing inherently wrong with these desires. However, when they do not attain these things, they lack joy. This is because life has not been made evident. 1 Since life does not consist in the abundance of what one possesses, then we know ‘things’ can never be the primary source of joy. Your joy will be complete when you are filled with the manifestation of Jesus. Why the Manifestation of Jesus Is God’s Promise to you — that’s our focus on this week’s Light on Life.

Jesus alluded to an expression used much today among Jesus followers: the eye of faith. We talk about seeing with 20–20 vision — spiritual vision that is. Holy Ghost vision. Seeing as God see’s not as the world see’s. An artist can paint the physical hands and feet of our Lord, but he cannot paint the healing power of those hands and the godly walk of those feet. [That takes the eye of faith] He can paint the outward suffering, but not the inward cause; the cursed tree, but not the curse of the law; the bearing of the cross, but not the bearing of the sins of His people; the cup of vinegar, but not the cup of wrath—the derision of His enemies and the forsaking of the Father. Where is the artist who can paint one hand of Christ nailed to the cross and the other hand claiming an inheritance of believers? Or who can paint our Lord bruising the serpent’s head, conquering sin, death and the grave? The artist can only portray blood and water flowing from Christ’s side, but he cannot paint what the eye of faith sees in that blood: salvation and pardon. That’s a good word for a good day on Planet Earth. What It Means to See with the Eye of Faith, that’s our focus on this week’s Light on Life.

Being filled with the Holy Spirit via psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs is the focus of our podcast and this post today. The Spirit of God has given utterance to many songs and hymns throughout the centuries. On the subject of hymns, Charles Spurgeon shared the following story from his life. “During one of many holidays at Salmbourne, [I looked this place up on the internet and after I did I had no more idea where it was than when ai stated – it’s somewhere in England], I had a varied experience which I am not likely to forget. My dear grandfather was very fond of Dr. Watt’s hymns, and my grandmother, wishing to get me to learn them, promised me a penny for each one that I should say to her perfectly. I found it an easy and pleasant method of earning money and learned them so fast that grandmother said she must reduce the price to a half-penny each, afterward even more, if she did not mean to be quite ruined by her extravagance [meaning she was going broke paying Charles to recite these hymns]. There is no telling how low the amount per hymn might have sunk, but grandfather [offered him a different deal]. He said that he was getting overrun with rats, and offered me a shilling [which is five pennies] a dozen for all I could kill. I found, at the time, that the occupation of rat-catching paid me better than learning hymns [5 times as much], but I know which employment has been more permanently profitable to me. No matter on what topic I am preaching, I can, even now, in the middle of my sermon, quote some verse of a hymn in harmony with the subject; the hymns have remained with me, while those old rats for years have passed away, and the shillings I earned by killing them have been spent long ago.1 Psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs are utterances given by the Spirit of God and they are evidence of being filled with the Spirit. Changing your geographical location would not bring you any nearer to God nor God any nearer to you, because the indivisible Trinity is present, and all that the Son is the Holy Ghost is, and all that the Father is the Holy Ghost is, and the Holy Ghost is in His Church.’1 The Holy Spirit is your Helper. In today’s podcast, your God given right to using Jesus Name is our focus. Jesus Name and His works go hand in hand. Miracles can occur because of the use of Jesus Name. On this thought of miracles, I know we have hit this from multiple angles. How about we take another shot at this but from the negative point of view. Have you ever thought, Why are there so many false miracles that are claimed by almost all religions (non-Christians and pseudo-Christians)? Similarly, Why are there so many false revelations (“God spoke to me”)? Could it not be possible that there are false miracles and revelations because there is one real miracle worker (God) who does authentic miracles for His purposes? Just as there can’t be a shadow without light shining through a real object to make the shadow, there must be true miracles that are mimicked by false miracles. And there would be no “knockoff” drugs to imitate the real drugs if the real drugs didn’t exist. Could it be that there are so many false religions because there is a truer one? Therefore, we can’t conclude that there are no true miracles because there are so many false ones. On the contrary, we must say the opposite: There are true miracles because there are so many false ones.1 I think that’s well said. The existence of the false indicates that there has to be a real. Your God Given Right to Use Jesus Name Now and Forever, is what we are covering today all on this week’s Light on Life.

If you’re acquainted at all with the gospels and the works of Jesus, you’ll know that miracles matter. They were prevalent during the three and half years of His ministry. But, what about afterward? Well, in this podcast, we will take a look at what happened post Jesus. That is what happened miracle-wise after Jesus ascended back into heaven both in the early church and in the later as well. Just as in Jesus day some refused to believe despite the work of God so it is today. Voltaire, a product of the period in history known as the Enlightenment, said that if he and one thousand men in Paris saw a miracle before their very eyes he would rather disbelieve his eyes and the eyes of the one thousand than to believe in the miracles.1. You see during the Enlightenment reason rose to the ascendancy. We will talk a little bit about this in this podcast. But just because some refuse to believe that God still does miracles does mean they don’t occur? No, God’s Word is true and eternally remains that way. Miracles matter and they happen even today — in fact, it matters much more today. But no matter what some just won’t believe. A pastor was once talking to an agnostic and was trying to convince him and convert him to Christ. “Speaking of miracles,” the pastor said, “if a man jumped out of a ten-story building and did not die, would that not be a miracle?” “No,” said the agnostic, “it would only be an accident.” “Then what if he jumped out the second time and he didn’t die. Wouldn’t you say that would be a miracle?” “No, that would be a coincidence.” “Then what if the third time? Podcast: Light on Life Season Eleven Episode Twenty

Concerning the works of Jesus, the Spirit of God made an astounding statement to the disciples in John fourteen. Listen to what He said. ‘The works that I do shall you do also and greater works than these shall you do.’ What kind of works did Jesus do? Well, Miracles for one. Miracles in the New Testament are essentially expressions of God’s salvation and glory. Why did Jesus perform miracles? Jesus answered this question Himself. When in prison, John the Baptist sent some of his disciples to Jesus to see if He was the “one to come” (Matthew 11:3). Jesus told them to inform John of what He had done: “The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor” (Matthew 11:5). With these words, Jesus declared that His miracles were the fulfillment of the promises of the Messiah’s kingdom.1 You know what? They still are. Jesus said, His church are to do his works. A.W. Tozer wrote that “Such questions are not merely academic. They touch the far-in reaches of the human spirit, and their answers affect life and character and destiny. When asked in reverence and their answers sought in humility, these are questions that cannot but be pleasing to our Father which art in heaven. To our questions God has provided answers—not all the answers, certainly, but enough to satisfy our intellects and ravish our hearts. These answers he has provided in nature, in the Scriptures, and in the person of his Son. As sunlight falls free on the open field, so the knowledge of the Holy God is a free gift to men who are open to receive it.” Tozer went on to say, “God has revealed himself to us in three ways. One, He is one God. Two, His attributes are not added-on qualities, but aspects of his essential being. Three, knowing him is both the easiest and most difficult thing in the world. I don’t know about you but knowing God sounds like a fun adventure. It’s astonishing how, amidst the explosion of knowledge in the past fifty years, many have overlooked the fact that the most crucial knowledge one can possess is knowledge of God. Who is He, and what is He like? Let’s consider a hypothetical scenario: if we were to discover inhabitants on other planets, the achievement of sending men to the moon pales in comparison to sending them to heaven. Understanding God takes precedence above all else. 1 Now, when we speak of knowledge of God in this podcast, we’re not referring to generic knowledge. For instance, acknowledging that God created the Heavens, and the Earth is a valid statement. However, there’s a significant difference between this general statement and a more personal one, such as “God, my heavenly Father, created the Heavens and the Earth for me.” Both statements hold truth, but the latter establishes a deeper, more intimate connection. I’m specifically talking about knowing God’s present characteristics and understanding Him in a personal way, as if we are walking together and sharing our lives. As we switch over to John’s gospel, chapter fourteen, the subject of having a healthy heart comes to the surface. Of course, the heart we are referencing is the spirit of a man and not the human blood pump. But, there are parallels between the two. You know when Dr. Christian Bernard performed the first human heart transplant, [we are talking about ‘healthy hearts’ today] the medical world basked in the glow of human achievement. Sick and dying people were given hope that in receiving a brand new heart, their lives would be extended. As great as this is, it pales in comparison to what God has done for His kids. He has been in the heart transplant business for a much longer time and, unique to His surgery, His patients live forever. When a new life enters the world, a new heart enters the world as well. There is no life apart from a physical heart. So it is with the Jesus follower: the believer receives a new heart when he says ‘yes’ to Jesus and receives a new life in Christ Second Corinthians 5:17 style. If any man be in Christ, he is a new creation and with it he has a new heart.1 In this week’s podcast, we look at aspects of our decision making that keeps our heart super healthy, vibrant, and strong — ‘Biblically Secrets to a Healthy Heart in God’ — that’s our focus on this week’s Light on Life.

As Paul closes out his segment on the division, the boasting, and the immaturity that was in this church, he ends chapter one with the marvelous reality that God placed us ‘In Christ.’ ‘Because of Him you are in Him, is what Paul states. But, what does that mean to be ‘in Christ?’ Tony Evans shared an object lesson that highlights one aspect of what it means to be ‘in Christ.’ Here’s his illustration. Tony said, “I’VE GOT three envelopes: a big one, a smaller one, and a smaller one yet. I’ve also got a slip of paper. [So, three envelopes — one piece of paper] The Bible says that we are in Christ and that Christ is in us. The smallest envelope has “Tony Evans” written on it. The slip of paper has “Jesus” written on it. The Bible says that when Tony Evans accepted Jesus Christ, He came inside of Tony Evans. Christ, [so we take] the slip of paper, [and we put it] inside the envelope that represents Tony Evans. But, not only is Christ in Tony Evans, but [it’s also true that] Tony Evans is in Christ. The slip of paper Christ is in Tony Evans, but when Tony Evans accepted Christ, Tony Evans came inside of Christ. [that’s the second envelope] I put the Tony Evans envelope into the Christ envelope. Now, the Bible says that Christ is in God. [God the Father is the third envelope] So we’re going to slip the Christ envelope into the God envelope. [So, what you see on the outside is a single envelope marked God on the outside. [So, where is Tony Evans now? You can’t see him.] So in order to now get to Tony Evans, you’ve got to go through God, and then you have to go through Christ, and after you’ve gone through God, and gotten through Christ, then [and only then] you get to Tony Evans. However, when you’ve gone through God, and gotten to Christ, and think you’ve have gotten ahold of Tony Evans, when you open up Tony Evans, he’s full of Jesus Christ. So I am in Christ, Christ is in me, Christ is in God, God is in Christ, so I am well covered by Jesus Christ and His heavenly Father.1 This is a marvelous illustration which shows that as long as you remain in Him, you are safe and secure. No human being should consider boasting of his or her accomplishments. Prideful boasting is never best. Meekness of humility is what’s appreciated by God and man. The Word of God says “Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth” — you find that reference in Matthew five and verse five. Illustrating this truth a drunkard of a husband spent the evening with his happy friends at a bar. He boasted that if he took all of his friends to his house at midnight and asked his Christian wife to get up and cook supper for them, that she would do it without complaint. The crowd that heard this drunk man boasting dared him to do it and bet money that he was full of bologna. So the drunken crowd went home with him and he made the unreasonable demands of his wife. She obeyed, dressed, came down, and prepared a very nice supper just as quickly as possible and served it as cheerfully as if she had been expecting them. After supper one of the men, a little more sober than the others, asked her how she could be so kind when they had been so unreasonable, and, also when they knew she did not approve of their conduct. Her reply was, “Sir, when my husband and I were married, we were both sinners. It has pleased God to call me out of that dangerous condition. My husband remains in it. I tremble for his future state. Were he to die as he is, he will be miserable forever; I think it my duty to render his present existence as comfortable as possible.” This wise and faithful reply affected the whole company. The husband thanked her for the warning, and gave his heart to Jesus and became a way better husband than he had ever been.1 God turned the foolish boasting of this man – a lesson he hopefully clung to for the balance of his days. Podcast: Light on Life Season Eleven Episode Fifteen

Did you know that your victory over Satan’s wisdom is a sure thing? Now, don’t be afraid to ask questions, that is a motto to live by. It is important to ask questions when we don’t understand something. We need to set aside our ego and acknowledge that we don’t know everything, as this is how we mature. However, we must not mistake this attitude for the rebellious “question authority” movement of the past. That is simply a disguise to do whatever one wants to do with no restraint. It is crucial to remember that God ordains the powers that be [Romans 13.1]. We should question things and not blindly accept everything we hear as truth. For example, if a minister claims a Bible verse says something, we should give him credit for his honesty and faithfulness of heart in declaring the Word, but feel empowered to verify. Checking things out for ourselves is how we make truth our own. When you put the work in, these verified facts become ‘thus says the Lord’ instead of ‘thus says the preacher.’ Failing to slow down, and think, leaves us open to great folly because, if the well-intentioned information is erroneous, it will not produce results.

There is a story that Napoleon often told to illustrate this point. Once, while visiting a province, he encountered an old soldier who had lost one arm in battle. The soldier was proudly wearing the coveted Legion of Honor on his uniform. Napoleon asked him where he had lost his arm, and the soldier replied that it was at the Battle of Austerlitz. When Napoleon praised him for receiving the Legion of Honor, the soldier humbly considered it a small token for his sacrifice. Surprised by the soldier’s response, Napoleon commented that he must be the kind of man who regretted not losing both arms for his country. In a bold move, the soldier immediately cut off his remaining arm, hoping to receive a double Legion of Honor. This story circulated for years, highlighting the importance of questioning and critically thinking before blindly accepting what others tell us.1

We are putting a spotlight on God’s wisdom this week because of Pauls’ First letter to the Corinthians. One gentleman shared his trek in trying to acquire the wisdom of God. He said, ‘Shortly after my conversion in 1973, six of my young Christian friends and I met one evening to talk about our faith. We had been reading our Bibles and had decided to pray for the spiritual gifts mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12.’ He went on to say, ‘I was young and zealous, so I asked for wisdom. I knew that God was wise [that’s what Romans 16:27 says]. And I knew that I needed what He had. I sensed the presence of God as we prayed, and I vividly recall my deep conviction that He would answer my prayer. In the days and months that followed, the Holy Spirit began to provoke me with the following passage: “My purpose is that…they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” [Colossians 2:2–3]. These verses contain a vital truth, but I did not understand it. In some mysterious way, Christ’s life and death reveal God’s hidden wisdom. Try as I might, I could not see it. I saw obedience, suffering, love, and courage. But His wisdom just wasn’t as obvious to me. I began praying: “Father, I want to understand why Your wisdom is a treasure. Let me see the value of Your wisdom. Let me see where You have hidden it in the life and death of Your Son.” Twelve years passed. [You know sometimes we are asking questions way beyond where we are. That means we must grow into the answer.] For some reason, I purchased the 17th–century classic The Existence and Attributes of God by the Puritan scholar Stephen Charnock. He devoted 107 pages to a detailed biblical study of God’s wisdom. One sentence in particular was life changing for me.’ “Wisdom consists in acting for a right end.… He is the wisest man that has the noblest end and the fittest means, so God is infinitely wise; as He is the most excellent being, so He has the most excellent end.” ‘As I read, God enlightened my understanding. For the first time, I saw that genuine wisdom consisted of the pursuit of God’s ultimate end, His glory, with God’s means, a life of sacrificial service. By contrast, “earthly wisdom” pursues its own glory (or another lesser end) using a selfish means, such as control, manipulation, or domination.1.’ That’s a marvelous testimony of how one man acquired some life changing wisdom. In Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, he emphasizes the immense power of Jesus’ Cross. This can be found in verse seventeen of chapter one. Moving on to verse eighteen, Paul mentions the significance of the ‘word of the Cross’ and its superiority over the word of the world. It’s clear that this message will resonate with many. Interestingly, an illustrator has praised Pittsburgh’s airport, stating that it is among the largest and most well-equipped in the entire nation.Two seconds in flying time from the airport and in direct line with one of its busiest runways is the steeple of Union Church. “Ever since the terminal opened,” said the pastor, William R. Ruschaput, “planes have buzzed the belfry [a belfry is the part of the steeple that houses the bell] — planes have buzzed the belfry like bees after honey. It got so bad that low-flying jets turned our Sunday evening services into sudden prayer meetings.” Reluctant to have their steeple carried away by some careless and unwary pilot, the church topped it with an eight-foot neon-lighted cross. The church is on the highest point near the airport and planes can see at night the lighted cross all the way from the Ohio border. One pilot made this interesting comment regarding the lighted cross: “Most of us are using it as a guide to the field.”1 The focus of this week’s podcast is the Cross as a guide and why having total confidence in it leads to ultimate wisdom — That’s our focus on this week’s Light on Life.

In First Corinthians, Paul addresses the division prominent in the house churches of the city. Simply stated, division is a wall between two sides. In the 1960s, the Communists of East Germany erected the Berlin Wall to prevent East Germans from uniting with West Germans. Many individuals lost their lives while attempting to climb the wall that separated the East from the West, proving that this barrier was not innocent. This wall of division separated friends from friends and family from family. The result brought death and despair. The wall would stay up forever, it seemed. But God had another plan. A global wave of nationalism and the desire for freedom swept up the people in Communist countries, turning the Communist world upside down. The Berlin Wall had no power against the forces of unity and freedom—and it fell, becoming prize souvenirs for collectors. Types of Berlin Walls are built every day in churches and between believers. There is no wall worth the cost of division. The only way to keep the unity of the Spirit in the church and between believers is to remain in the Spirit.1 That’s what Paul endeavored to get over to the Corinthian Church. It’s a lesson we should strive to learn and operate in as well in the days of our generation. Why a Spirit of Division is Not Your Way, that’s our focus of this week’s Light on Life.

Strife, avoiding it, and knowing why you should is what we are talking up today. The Church at Corinth had major problems with strife. So, in his letter to this church, Paul makes addressing this problem one of his major focal points. He didn’t want this church to have a history in this area. You may not realize it, but Aaron Burr, the third Vice President of the United States, had a history with strife. His grandfather, Jonathan Edwards, raised him in a godly home and admonished him to accept Christ. [You know who Jonathan Edwards is don’t you? He preached one of the world’s most famous sermons, ‘Sinners in the Hands of An Angry God.’ So, Aaron Burr’s renowned grandfather tried to lead him to Jesus.] Instead, he declared he wanted nothing to do with God and said he wished the Lord would leave him alone. He achieved a measure of political success despite repeated disappointments. But he was also involved in continuous strife, and when he was 48 years old, he killed Alexander Hamilton in a duel. He lived for 32 more years, but through all this time, he was unhappy and unproductive. It was during this sad chapter in his life that he declared to a group of friends; “Sixty years ago I told God that if He would let me alone, I would let Him alone, and God has not bothered about me since.” Aaron Burr got what he wanted. Everyone wants to know what their calling is in life. Why am I here? What’s the purpose for my life? Why am I wired the way I am. What’s God’s plan for my life? Some time ago in Schenectady, N. Y., before an audience which included many young engineers from General Electric, Donald Grey Barnhouse spoke of feeding upon Christ, pointing out that the physical action of today was the result of last week’s food, and that the spiritual action in any life is the result of previous feeding upon Christ. I said, “For example, a young man trained as an engineer, with bright prospect before him, hears the call of God to go out to Africa as a missionary, leaves his position, and faces the Dark Continent. He has been feeding on Christ.” I had not more than pronounced the benediction that a young man came up to me and asked, “Why did you say what you did about an engineer going to Africa?” I answered that, as I was preaching, the Holy Spirit had led me. And the young man replied, “I am an engineer and God is calling me to Africa, and I must leave my career and go there as a missionary.” It was a “word fitly spoken” which reached his particular case.1 You see most everyone wants to know. Some might hide from it because they’re concerned that God might send them to Africa. Well, you don’t have to worry about that. God is totally intelligent and the most able communicator who ever existed. If He wants you to go to Africa, He will surely get that information to you. We’re talking about God’s call on your life and how to find it. That’s our focus on this week’s Light on Life.

Podcast: Light on Life Season Eleven Episode Nine

In this week’s podcast, the subject of guilt steps forward as we march through the first chapter of First Corinthians. Paul writes to this church informing them of a particular thing God will do for all Jesus’ followers. He will sustain them to the end, holding them guiltless on the day of Lord Jesus Christ. Now, as we get into today’s lesson, we will read these set of words again, but we will do it in context. So, here’s the question we’re going to look at today. If God holds us guiltless, why are so many feeling guilt? That this struggle with guilt exists is clear in the following illustration. Gayle Roper wrote an article in Discipleship Journal entitled “I Can’t Forgive Myself What You Need to Know If You Still Feel Guilty.” It’s a good article and you will find it in Discipleship Journal. In the article, Gayle gives the following stories: • Story number one: The note slid under my door and skittered across the floor of my room at the retreat center where I was the weekend speaker. “I had an abortion seven years ago,” it read. “I can’t forgive myself. Can you give me some hope?” • Story number two: A large gentleman wore a Jesus T-shirt and cap and carried a huge Bible, the very image of the eager Christian. “I look good on the outside,” he said. “But inside, there’s all this ugliness. I can’t forgive myself.” • Story number three: A young couple, picture-perfect Christian newlyweds, stared at the floor. “We may have been virgins technically when we married,” he said. “But only by the strictest definition.” “We feel so guilty about the fooling around as we did,” she added. “We can’t forgive ourselves.“1 People in the church house are struggling with guilt. Podcast: Light on Life Season Eleven Episode Eight

Today’s dive into the Book of First Corinthians brings us to the subject of maturity. What does it really mean to be mature in God? Sinclair Ferguson asked the same question. He states that our constant quest as Christians is to become mature. Whenever I think of the subject of maturity, Sinclair said, I recall a painful experience during my first couple of years as a young pastor. A visitor was addressing our young people. He was in his early twenties himself and had made his first discovery of Jesus while caught in one of the sub-cultures of the West Coast. After becoming a Jesus follower, he told us, he realized he lacked spiritual maturity. So, [these are his words now, this new born Jesus follower] — He decided to go to Bible school for a year, and [again these are his words] ‘when I got maturity’ I decided to go on overseas evangelism.

So, I am going to cut in here and comment on this before we get back to the rest of Sinclair’s story. This young Jesus follower thought he was mature after going to school for a year. Think about that as we go back to the rest of the story.

Sinclair said that the rest of this young man’s address displayed how little maturity of understanding he actually possessed. The thrust of his thinking [this young believer who went to Bible school for a year] was that if you were not absolutely certain that you were in the right place, you ought to be serving God overseas (as he was!).

Of course, spiritual maturity is not so easily obtained. It does not come with diplomas. Nor does it show itself by insistence that one’s own pattern of life must rule every believer’s life. [‘you know you’re only mature if you do things like I do them’ kind of mindset.]

What was even more painful about this whole story was to see the effect of this young man’s address on our young people. They were blown away with this guy – they thought he was the most mature super spiritual thing ever. It took a long time for some of them to recover. What’s the point here? None of these people really understood what spiritual maturity was all about.1 You know it’s no different today. There’s all kinds of thinking out there. People just don’t know. That’s why in today’s podcast, we’re talking about What It Means to Be Really Mature in God all on this week’s Light on Life.

As we roll into chapter five of 1 Thessalonians, we have ten more verses that relate to the Rapture, the Wrath of God, and End Times. Charles Finis Dake wrote quite a bit about these areas. He was a prolific student of God’s Word having put in 100,000 hours of study which averages roughly to eight hours a day. He said this about End Time events. “Having been born in 1902, I have now had time to witness the coming and going of quite a few prophetic students who, one by one, have made boisterous claims regarding the exact time of the rapture, exactly who the Antichrist was, and exactly what “the mark of the beast” would be. I have lived through strong announcements that various dictators were the Antichrist—Mussolini, Hitler, Stalin, and others. One preacher was so convinced that Mussolini was the Antichrist that he wrote a book about it. But before the book could become a best-seller, Mussolini died. “My God,” the preacher said. “They’ve killed my Antichrist and I’ve just printed 5,000 copies of my book!” With all of this, and more, going on in the prophetic field during my lifetime, I think that my reasons for writing The Rapture and the Second Coming of Christ are obvious, and I trust understandable.1 We’re talking End Times, specifically the Day of the Lord. Today, we undertake to highlight the vital nature of responsibility as it relates to those who have just received Jesus as their Savior. What is our role when it comes to people who have just been born again? Isn’t it to make disciples? That’s what Jesus said. Take the raw elements of a new convert and help them on their journey of being molded into the image of God. That’s positive production. Picture a large manufacturing plant in your town or city that produces shoes. The management has invested great sums of money and many man-hours into the plant to produce the finest shoes possible. Money has been spent on salaries for the employees, machinery for shoemaking, and materials from which the shoes are to be made. The plant is now in operation with hundreds of workers scurrying to and fro. Machines are running full blast, and activity is at a maximum. One day the president asks the production manager, “How many shoes have we produced so far?” “None,” the manager answers. “None?” the president exclaims. “How long have we been in operation?” “Two years.” “Two years? And still no shoes?” “That’s right,” the manager says, “No shoes, but we are really busy. In fact, we have been so busy that we are all nearly tired out. We’ve been very active at our jobs.” The management would probably be very concerned, fire somebody, and try to find out what the problem was. If we now put a cross on top of that building and transform it into the church on the corner—your church, we find much activity going on. Men and women are working hard. The budget is higher this year than ever before. The objective, however, is to produce disciples. Is all that money and man-hours production in your church going into the production of disciples for Jesus Christ?1 Producing disciples, that’s our job and that’s why we’re talking today on the subject of What’s Our Responsibility to Those Newly Come to Faith in God — all on this week’s Light on Life.

The Second Coming of Jesus is at the forefront of today’s podcast. Here is a story of how a Hindu found God because of this coming remarkable event. Jimmy Modha, who was raised in a devout Hindu home in Leicester, England, enraged his family by coming to Christ and converting to Christianity. He told them his sins had been forgiven because he had found God. “Which god?” shouted his father “It’s Jesus Christ,” replied Jimmy. “Actually He came and found me. He died on the cross for my sins; I am a Christian.” His mother fainted, his father threw him out of the house, and his brother Jay prayed for the gods to kill him. “We would mourn his death,” said Jay, “but at least our family would not be dishonored.” Jay, a brilliant student working on his Ph.D. in parasitology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine disowned his brother and refused to talk to him. In parting, Jimmy said, “Jay, if you are ever desperate and no one is there to help you, remember Jesus loves you, and His hand is on your life. Call to Him and He will save you.” Jay was furious, but Jimmy began praying earnestly for him. Shortly Jay began having disturbing dreams. “It was as if I was awake in my bed at three in the morning when suddenly a blinding light broke through the roof and ceiling of my bedroom. In that light I could see a cloud descending from heaven, bearing three awesome, fiery men-like creatures. The first blew a trumpet so loud that I was sure the whole world could hear its thunderous sound. I knew whatever was coming was universal in consequence. The second creature cried out, ‘Prepare ye, for the Lord is coming to reap the harvest!’ Then the third swung a scythe over the earth and cried, ‘Now is the earth ready for harvest!’ “I tried to wake up from the dream because I felt I was going to have a heart attack from sheer fright. But I could not. Then, in the middle of the cloud, I noticed a Person who looked completely different. The brilliant light was coming from Him. His face shone so radiantly that no features were clear except for eyes that looked like blazing flames of fire. A robe went from His neck to His feet, which were like white-hot metal. He was dreadful in His beauty and terrible in His splendor. “As He descended, He looked at me. I was completely undone, absolutely terrified. I could not bear to look at Him any longer, so I turned my head. To my amazement, there beside me was my brother Jimmy, who was not scared at all. In fact, his face was joyous, and he was reaching out as if to embrace the figure. “When I gained the courage to look at Him again, He addressed me saying, ‘Jay, what are you going to do when this happens?’ Then everything vanished, and I woke up.” It took Jay an hour to calm down, and he prayed for understanding. A few days later, Jimmy called and, hearing of Jay’s dream, said, “Jay, what you saw is the Second Coming of Christ. Shortly after this, Jay gave his heart to Jesus. Why the Second Coming of Jesus is the Expectation of All Believers, that’s our focus on this week’s Light on Life.

Modeling is a term that has been kicked around in leadership and development circles. What is modeling? One writer said that it is the influence our decisions and lifestyles have upon those around us. Whether we realize it or not, we’re always modeling something. Unlike fashion modeling—in which appearance is paramount—modeling the Christian life requires honesty and authenticity. To model a relationship with Jesus is to be a living, breathing, tangible example to those we disciple. Consider how Jesus did this. He spent three and one-half years literally living with His disciples. This was not a new concept. This was the teaching method of Rabbis. But, consider that in today’s busy world, it’s easier to schedule a meeting than to live life with others. There’s certainly nothing wrong, of course, with having a consistent meeting time. But if we only have time to pass on knowledge in an “academic” way—divorced from everyday life—then perhaps we’re too busy. The vital nature of being in the company of others cannot be overstated. We need one another which is why, in today’s podcast, our focus is Why Modeling the Jesus Life Is Such a Powerful Witness — all on this week’s Light on Life.

God is always moving. From the very first pages of Genesis, where the Spirit of God hovered over the face of the waters, we can know that a move of God is always imminent. It’s just the way it is. God never stands still, and He never goes backward. His direction is always forward. I like what I read about the Australian Coat of Arms. It pictures two creatures—the emu, a flightless bird, and the kangaroo. The animals were chosen because they share a characteristic that appealed to Australian citizens. Both the emu and kangaroo can move only forward, not back. The emu’s three-toed foot causes it to fall if it tries to go backward, and the kangaroo is prevented from moving in reverse by its large tail. Those who truly choose to follow Jesus become like the emu and kangaroo, moving only forward, never back (Luke 9:62)1 I don’t know about you, but that motivates me. I like moving forward. There is nothing spiritual about stagnation. In today’s podcast, we take a look at how God moved among the Thessalonians. In today’s podcast, we are going to talk about the high value of praying for one another. We need to home in on this and give it the due place in our lives. You know we pay a lot of lip service to the notion of praying for one another. The words ‘pray for me’ or ‘I’m praying for you brother’ are part of our Christian-ese vocabulary. For people in the church world, it’s the thing to say. I mean you wouldn’t dare say that you weren’t going to pray for someone, would you? But when those words leave your lips, do you actually execute and lift your voice to God? That intercession is a great and necessary part of Christian devotion is very evident from Scripture. The first Jesus followers showed their love by mutually praying for one another. Paul, whether he’s writing a letter to a church [a group of people] or addressing an individual shows that his intercession for them is perpetual. It was this holy intercession that raised Christians to such a high level of love and development. When this same spirit of intercession is yielded to by Jesus followers, when Christianity has the same power over the hearts of people that it then had, this holy friendship will again be in fashion, and Christians will be again the wonder of the world.1 Why It’s Vital to Pray for One Another, that’s our focus on this week’s Light on Life.

We are going to take a look at how the call of God and the zeal of the Lord upon the Apostle Paul turned into a power-packed Church in one of the ten most influential cities in the Roman Empire, the city of Thessaloniki. Now, one thing is certain from the following illustration — this is not how Paul did it. You know, about 350 years ago a shipload of travelers landed on the northeast coast of America. In the first year, this group of pioneers established a town site. The next year they elected a town government. In the third year, the town government planned to build a road five miles westward into the wilderness. In the fourth year, the people tried to impeach their town government because they thought it was a waste of public funds to build a road five miles westward into a wilderness. Who needed to go there anyway? Is that wild or what? Here were people who had the vision to travel three thousand miles across an ocean and overcome great hardships to get there. But, once they got there, in just a few years they were not able to see even five miles out of town. They had lost their pioneering vision1 F.B. Myer said, that the church that refuses to be a missionary church will become a missing church. the Apostle Paul didn’t get saved to sit — He got saved to be sent. The result of his obedience to go? Then, we’re going to jump in and talk about persecution and how we should get a handle on this if we are confronted with it. And then, of course, Paul talks about the Second Coming of Jesus. But first, let’s talk about the historical background of the book and “How the Breath of God Inspired the Writing of First Thessalonians” That’s our focus today on this week’s Light on Life.

Podcast: Light on Life Season Ten Episode Sixteen

Prayer armor, or praying on all occasions in the Spirit is Paul’s next admonition to the church after he talks about the armor of God. He uses the term praying all ways or at all times. During the turn of the 20th century, there was a great outpouring of the Spirit of God that began in Los Angeles at a place called Azusa. The Azusa Street revival of 1906 led to the spread of the Pentecostal faith, including speaking in tongues and the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, throughout the US and the across the world. The movement further inspired missionaries and helped to break down racial separations.1 The power of God fell mighty for several years at Azusa but not only there, that same move took place simultaneously in other parts of the world, places like India and Sri Lanka. Here is just one story. “Miss Minnie Abrams tells of a meeting held by one of the Mukti bands in Anrangabad in 1906. It was in the Church Missionary Society schoolroom. A little girl of nine was wonderfully anointed with prayer. Before going back to the Church Missionary Society boarding school in Bombay, from which she had come for a vacation, she asked her father if anyone might receive the Holy Spirit. He told her that God would give the Holy Spirit to all who asked Him. On returning to the school she succeeded in getting four girls to join her in prayer, daily, for the Holy Spirit. Upon one of these, a girl of sixteen, the Holy Spirit was poured out with the speaking in tongues. She asked daily to retire to a room for prayer. She would become oblivious to her surroundings and time, wholly occupied in communion with God, praying always aloud. When it was discovered that she was speaking in a language not understood, Canon Haywood was brought in. He decided this might be the speaking in tongues he had heard about, and took measures to find out what she was saying. In the cosmopolitan city of Bombay where many languages were spoken, he found one who could understand much of what she said. She was pleading with God for Libya, in North Africa. (Springfield, MO: Gospel Publishing House, 1946), 109–110.] The Spirit of God fell on this young girl and she continued to pray is the record we have. Stories like this where the power of God falls and lives are changed is what we are talking about today as we ask the question – What Is the Link Between Praying in the Spirit and the Armor of God? One of my favorite shows from yesteryear was Get Smart. It was a show about a goofy secret agent. One of the popular catchphrases for the show was ‘would you believe.’ Maxwell Smart would say when he got caught by the bad guys, ‘would you believe.’ Here’s some of the dialogue. “I happen to know that at this very’ moment, eight Coast Guard cutters are converging on this boat. Would you believe seven? Six? How about two cops in a rowboat?” Or, At this very minute, 25 Control agents are converging on this building. Would you believe two squad cars and a motorcycle cop? How about a vicious street cleaner and a toothless police dog? Or, I once trained a girl to swim across the English Channel five times. Would you believe four times? Would you believe three times across the Mississippi? How about twice around the bathtub? Once around the bathtub? Or, in a short while, General Crawford and a hundred of his crack paratroopers will come crashing into this landing. Would you believe J. Edgar Hoover and I0 of his G-men? How about Tarzan and a couple of apes? Bomba, the Jungle Boy? Or, at this very moment, 100 highway patrolmen with Doberman pinschers are surrounding this entire area. Would you believe four deputies and a bloodhound? How about a Boy Scout with rabies? The question arises, ‘do you believe in the Resurrection of Jesus? Do you believe it just like the Bible says it, or do you believe a watered-down ‘Maxwell Smart’ version of the events surrounding Jesus’ death?

Podcast: Light on Life Season Ten Episode Fourteen

We’ve arrived. Today, we take a look at the final piece of the armor of God, the Sword of the Spirit. What is the Sword of the Spirit? Well, the scripture says that it’s the Word of God. So, our interaction with the Bible is necessary when we engage the levels of devils that come against us to steal, kill, and destroy. One gentleman, Robert Boardman wrote an article entitled, The Neglected Exercise, What will you miss if you don’t read your Bible every day? In it, he said that in the early 1970s, he accompanied a small tour group into a country that was difficult to enter. In one city of about 500,000, we found only one church left open by the authorities. All over the city, we could distinguish former church buildings turned into museums, warehouses, offices, or military barracks. In that solitary open church, we joined about fifteen bystanders, including several youths, watching a stand-up worship service. The worshipers numbered ten elderly women, one elderly blind man, and a handful of children. A priest wafted incense and recited some incantations. Then he brought out a huge, bejeweled Bible, carefully unlocked it, and read a portion from the Old Testament and another from the New. He then locked the Bible and, to our astonishment, one by one the eleven elderly worshipers came by and reverently kissed the ancient Holy Book. As we came out of that forlorn but open church building, many thoughts raced through our minds. One thing we were sure of was that the onlooking young people were thinking, If this is Christianity, it deserves to stay in the Middle Ages. What we saw was a ritualistic, clergy-dominated religion where the people had no access to a Bible of their own. It was locked away from them. How many versions of the Bible do we have in the free world? Hundreds I’m sure. I have an invaluable study book called The New Testament from 26 Translations. Do you and I take advantage of the unlocked, abundant versions of the Bible in our homes and libraries? Or do our negligence and apathy make the Bible a locked book? That was Robert Broadman’s insightful comment. Let me ask you a question based on what you’ve heard. How does the Bible become the Sword of the Spirit that it needs to be if you treat it as a locked book? How to Become an Expert at Swinging the Sword of the Spirit of God, that’s the focus of this week’s Light on Life.

With a “blue” mindset, you’ll find that blue jumps out at you: a blue book on the table, a blue pillow on the couch, blue in the painting on the wall, and so on … In like fashion, you’ve probably noticed that after you buy a new car, you promptly see that make of car everywhere. Podcast: Light on Life Season Ten Episode Twelve

Our study on the armor of God brings us today to the shield of faith. What an essential piece of armor this is. You know in December 2004, a single question from a young soldier touched off a media firestorm. U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld had come to deliver a pep talk to the troops at Camp Buehring in Kuwait. But the usually unflappable secretary found himself blindsided by a bold query. As news cameras rolled, Army Specialist Thomas Wilson of the 278th Regimental Combat Team asked Rumsfeld, “Why do we soldiers have to dig through local landfills for pieces of scrap metal and compromised ballistic glass to up-armor our vehicles?” Specialist Wilson clearly felt he was being sent into battle without proper protection. As Christians, however, we shouldn’t have that fear. Our Supreme Commander generously equips us with the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit. We walk in peace, we live in peace, and we proclaim peace. Imagine Jesus reviewing the troops, who are supposed to be fresh and ready for battle. But some have fairly recent wounds, nicks in their armor, arms in slings, casts, etc. Jesus asks, “What’s the matter here? Why, are they wounded already?” “Oh, they’ve been fighting in the barracks again.”1 Oftentimes, there is more truth to that than we care to admit. No, we are to walk in peace — not in strife. Podcast: Light on Life Season Ten Episode Ten

Our study on the armor of God brings us to the Breastplate of Righteousness. Why is righteousness considered such an essential piece? Why is it a weapon for good and for God? To what extent should we go after an understanding of this valuable piece of armor? These are all good questions. The answer to this last one was demonstrated in the story of one of Sir Earnest Shackleton’s expeditions. In the Antarctic summer of 1908–1909, Shackleton and three companions attempted to travel to the South Pole from their winter quarters. They set off with four ponies to help carry the load. Weeks later, their ponies dead, rations all but exhausted, they turned back toward their base, their goal not accomplished. Altogether, they trekked 127 days. On the return journey, as Shackleton records in The Heart Of The Antarctic, the time was spent talking about food—elaborate feasts, gourmet delights, sumptuous menus. As they staggered along, suffering from dysentery, not knowing whether they would survive, every waking hour was occupied with thoughts of eating. Jesus, who also knew the ravages of food deprivation, said, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for RIGHTEOUSNESS.” We can understand Shackleton’s obsession with food, which offers a glimpse of the passion Jesus intends for our quest for righteousness.1 In the barren, and frigid world in which we live, are we to hunger after righteousness like Shackleton and his men did for food? Starving for right and righteousness, now that’s an intense thought: The Who What When and Why of the Breastplate Of Righteousness. That’s our focus on this week’s Light on Life.

I ran across this quote that raised my eyebrows. Here it is: “Little by little evangelical Christians these days are being brainwashed. One piece of evidence is that increasing numbers of them are becoming ashamed to be found unequivocally on the side of truth. They say they believe but their beliefs have been so diluted as to be impossible to clear definition.”1 My my! What a dangerous habit to not take sides with the truth. It’s lethal because the loin belt of truth is what holds all of the armor of God together. Paul listed the pieces individually for us in Ephesians six. Paul, in Ephesians 6:12, what’s us to know that we wrestle not with people. It’s not with flesh and blood, but with levels of devils. He likens this conflict to a wrestling match. If you have ever seen a wrestling match, you know it is not pretty. It is sweaty, dirty, and painful. When you wrestle, you get down and get dirty. There is no half-hearted involvement. You give it everything you’ve got, or you lose. Anthony T. Evans wrote: “I know a bit about wrestling because my brother, Arthur, was the Maryland state wrestling champion in his weight class. At his championship match, my brother weighed in at about 230 pounds and was going up against the three-time Maryland state champion, who outweighed him by 35 pounds. Before the match, a reporter asked, ‘Who is the toughest wrestler in this room?’ “My brother, humble fellow that he is, said, ‘You are looking at him!’ “The reporter looked at him and asked, ‘What makes you think you are so tough? You are about to fight the man who has won the state championship three times in a row.’ “My brother replied with a very insightful comment, ‘I know. He is bigger and perhaps stronger than I am, but I know his methods.’ “We are in a similar fight against Satan. Just as my brother needed to learn his opponent’s moves, we need to understand Satan’s moves. We need to know how he operates so that we can prepare ourselves ‘to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm’ (Eph. 6:13). No place in Scripture reveals Satan’s schemes better than Genesis 3, which records Satan’s initial contact with man. As the story unfolds, we clearly see Satan’s strategy to ruin the human race.”1. When the Bible speaks of putting on the whole armor of God, what does that mean? The second question we must ask is what is its purpose? Why do we need this armor? These are the questions that we are endeavoring to answer today. One gentleman wrote asking this second question using different words. He asked, ‘Is the Church an attacking force, or a fortress to be defended?’ He answered his own question by stating that the Bible declares that the weapons of the Christian pull down strongholds (2 Cor. 10:4). The gates of the stronghold of hell cannot hold out against a properly dressed believer. Why have we developed a defensive, fortress, holy huddle mentality? How do we change this nonbiblical mindset? For certain, we must change it if the Church is going to extend the Lordship of Christ over the darkness of Satan’s stronghold. Our actions are determined by our currently dominant thoughts. If we visualize the Church as a fortress, our strategy, our vision, and our measurements of success will reflect that perception. Is the Church a haven until Heaven, a refuge until the rapture?1. Podcast: Light on Life Season Ten Episode Six

In Ephesians 6:10, we have the much-quoted verse, ‘Be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.’ On the subject of dealing from a position of strength, President Theodore Roosevelt adopted as his pet proverb, “Speak softly and carry a big stick.” He meant that if the United States had a strong military, it could work its will among the nations of the world. In 1901, Roosevelt changed the saying to “If a man continually blusters, a big stick will not save him from trouble; and neither will speaking softly avail if back of the softness there does not lie strength, power.” When Jesus said, “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth,” he was not speaking of armies and foreign policy, but some principles are the same. The meek Christian does not need to bluster, as if self-confidence could win the day. Whether we’re contesting a point, responding to criticism, or speaking of the hope within, we can do so in meekness, with quiet confidence. For in “back of the softness” within us lie the strength and power of God.1 The strength and power of God are what all Jesus’ followers should excel in. That’s why our focus today is answering the question What Does it Mean to Be Strong in the Lord?

Previously, we discussed the employer-employee relationship as we are admonished by the word of God. How should Jesus followers act in the workplace? Well here’s one example of how we definitely should not act. The September 2, 1996, issue of the Wichita Business Journal carried a disturbing front-page article on employee theft that began: “Everyone is honest and trustworthy, right? That’s what some clients thought when they started their small businesses. In just a short time they were out of business because of an employee skimming from the cash register and theft of warehouse goods. “A little here and a little there… who’s going to notice? You should take notice. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, approximately a third of all business failures each year can be traced to employee theft and other employee crime. “While managers and owners would like to think their employees are all trustworthy and honest, large-scale anonymous surveys have shown almost half of the employees admitted to stealing.”1 Are these disturbing facts to you? Do they bother you? Jesus followers aren’t to represent God just in the church house. They are to represent Him to the world. In this week’s podcast, the book of Ephesians chapter six brings us to the subject of employers and employees and their conduct towards one another. Any organization worth its salt supplies a job description for its employees. A well-written job description allows the employee to know exactly what kind of work his employer is expecting from him. This crucial document of communication is a handy tool to have around when memories begin to fade from initial agreements. In the same sense, God has given each believer a job description. Believers should: grow in love, study to be quiet, do their own business, and work with their own hands – 1 Thessalonians 4:9–12. This prescription, written down by the Apostle Paul centuries ago, works for every occupation.1 What we need to do is bring this concept over into the workplace. Podcast: Light on Life Season Ten Episode Three

We are asking and answering the question, how does one live a long and prosperous life? The answer is found in Ephesians six as it relates to children’s interaction with their parents. When children obey their parents, long life and prosperity are the results. And here is where some problems arise. In 2002, only 9 percent of adults said the children they saw in public were respectful toward adults. In 2004, more than one of three teachers considered leaving their profession or knew another teacher who quit. The reason? students’ “intolerable behavior.” So said Public Agenda, a nonprofit and nonpartisan research group. In 2005, 70 percent of people surveyed said, “People are ruder than they were 20 or 30 years ago.” Among the worst offenders were children, said an Associated Press-Ipsos poll. The reason, experts say, is because of what parents expect from kids. “The pressure to do well is up. The demand to do good is way down.” Dan Kindlon, a child psychologist at Harvard University, believes most parents want considerate, polite, well-behaved children. “But they’re too tired, worn down by work, and personally needy to take up the task of teaching them proper behavior at home,” Kindlon says. He says present-day parenting has more to do with training boys and girls to compete in school or on the soccer field, but competition doesn’t teach civility. “Parents are out of control,” says Dr. Alvin Rosenfeld, a child psychiatrist. “We always want to blame the kids, but if there’s something wrong with their incivility, it’s the way their parents model for them. 1 I just didn’t get to it

In Ephesians 5:28–33, the husband is directed to specialize at home in one great task: Loving his wife.” Behind the simplicity of this command lies the profound depth of the love of Christ, for in all respects the Lord Jesus Christ is the husband’s example.1 In today’s Light on Life podcast, our focus is on the husband’s responsibility to his wife. In last week’s episode, we covered the reverse — the wife’s responsibility to her man. The scripture says that husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. But, what does that mean, exactly? Podcast: Light on Life Season Ten Episode One

We are in Ephesians five, talking today about the subject of submission and its connection to authority. Submission and authority are vitally essential truths God established both in heaven and on earth. Much disharmony has come because of a lack of understanding of what it means to voluntarily submit to one another in a spirit of humility and love. Jim Lamb prayed the following prayer and it’s a good lesson in this area. Jim prayed these words: I seem to have not one Master, but hundreds – an army of people streaming through my life, demanding my time, my strength, my mental attention. They all want me to do something for them. But as I listen to a song of our Savior, I begin to understand the true power that comes in submission, even when it is painful: The Sovereign Lord has opened my ears, and I have not been rebellious; I have not drawn back. I offered my back to those who beat me, and my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard; I did not hide my face from mocking and spitting. Because the Sovereign Lord helps me, I will not be disgraced. Therefore have I set my face like flint, and I know I will not be put to shame (Isaiah 50:4–7). I hear your song, Lord Jesus. Teach me how to follow your example as a humble servant of all, and yet also be a leader in confidence and strength, just as you were. You are the submissive Lamb of God, without resentment but also the Lion of Judah, courageous and powerful. Teach me these qualities. Help me always to bend willingly, but also to shamelessly take the lead with my face set like flint whenever I must. And thank you for never rebelling or drawing back-earning salvation for us, and endless glory for yourself. That’s quite a prayer. Maybe you can relate to part or all of this. Thank God that Jesus moved into the realm of submission and because He did, he now has ultimate authority. What the Word of God Teaches about Submission and Authority, that’s our focus on this week’s Light on Life1. Ephesians 5:21–24 (ESV): 21 — submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ. 22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.

Today, our study in Ephesians chapter five brings us to the subject of time: redeeming time. How does one redeem time? That’s what we want to study today. This story may help you along these lines. John Erskine, the well known author, professor, and lecturer, once wrote that he learned the most valuable lesson of his life when he was fourteen. His piano teacher asked him how much he practiced and how long at a stretch. The boy replied that he practiced for an hour or more at a time. “Don’t do that,” warned the teacher. “When you grow up, time won’t come in long stretches. Practice in minutes, whenever you can find them—five or ten minutes before school, after lunch, between chores. Spread the practice throughout the day, and music will become part of your life.” Erskine stated that the observance of this advice enabled him to live a comparatively complete life as a creative writer outside his regular duties as an instructor. He wrote most of Helen of Troy, his most famous work, on streetcars while commuting between his home and the university.1 In today’s podcast, we are talking about time: What’s the Connection between Evil Days and Redeeming the Time? – Answering that question is our focus on this week’s Light on Life.

Today, we are talking about the subject of exposing evil. Evil is not to be babysat. It’s not to be tolerated or gotten used to. The believer is strongly warned. He cannot live in the darkness of this world and expect the light of God to guide him throughout life. Here is the story of one man who tried. Aaron was a salesman with a strong personality and lots of charisma. Image was very important to him. He loved the applause of men and would feed his ego by seeking out popular places to make an appearance. Trying to become “one of the guys” was his excuse for compromising his values to sell more products. On Sunday mornings, he went to church. In public, he even talked like a Christian. But in reality, Aaron led a double life and did whatever he felt necessary to get ahead in business. When it came to his Christian life, Aaron “talked the talk” but didn’t “walk the walk.” It did not take long for his double standards and hypocrisy to affect the reputation of the business. Aaron’s employer soon took him aside and said, “Aaron, I really appreciate all the good things you do, like meeting your sales goals. But for your own good, I’m going to ask you to take a break from working outside the office. I want you to take a close look at your lifestyle. You are making choices that no longer affect just you alone. Until you can make some changes in your lifestyle, I’m taking you off the road.” Aaron hung his head in shame. His employer had seen past his smooth exterior into his dark inner self. The light of God’s Spirit had exposed Aaron’s, true heart.1 This man was caught in contradiction but did it have to go that far? What if someone had the guts to pull him aside and say to him, ‘Aaron, you’re missing it here.’ What if someone overcame the uncomfortableness of confrontation, to rescue a wayward believer and help him right his course? Would it not have been the right thing to do? That’s the question that we are proposing today. Why Your Monumental Mission in Life Is to Expose Evil — that’s our focus on this week’s Light on Life.

The work of righteousness will be peace, and the effect of righteousness will be quietness and assurance forever”1 From a study in Ephesians we look at the Kingdom of God from a different point of view. You know we often hear the term ‘breaking down walls.’ But in reality, Jesus is the ultimate wall breaker. By his death, burial and resurrection, Jesus broke down the wall of hostility that existed between men and races. The wall has already been torn down. Men just need to know and understand that it’s so. When we come to Jesus when men give their hearts to God when they experience the new birth, the love of God comes on the inside of them and transforms and changes them into the image of Jesus. So, union between the races comes because of union with Him. On the idea of union, have you ever thought about coffee? Many people drink coffee with cream. When cream is added to coffee, a union occurs. The blackness of the coffee and the whiteness of the cream are now integrated and made one. The coffee becomes brown because of the union. The coffee is not considered black-and-white coffee; it’s just a cup of coffee! When you drink it, you now must drink the black coffee with the white cream because they have become one. If someone were to try to separate the cream from the coffee, there would be chaos in the cup. Once the union of cream with coffee has occurred, no separation is possible. The Bible says that when we came to Jesus Christ for salvation, we entered into an indissolvable union with Him so that what happened to Jesus happened to us. Jesus died. We died. Jesus arose. We arose with Him. Jesus ascended. We ascended with Him. Jesus brought us all into union – guess what? What God has joined together, you cannot separate.1 Why Jesus Breaking Down the Wall Between Men and Races Matter, that’s our focus on this week’s Light on Life.

On being joined to Jesus, Paul mentions in his Epistle to the Ephesians that Jesus Christ is the Cornerstone. The Jews had a legend based on a statement of the psalmist. According to that legend, when the Temple of Solomon was being built, the masons sent up from the quarry below a stone different in size and shape from all the rest they had sent up. Looking at it, the builders said: “There is no place for this stone. There must be some mistake.” So, they rolled it down the cliff’s edge into the valley of Kidron below the Temple area. As time went on (for the Temple was seven years in building), they were ready for the chief cornerstone. When they asked for it, they were told, “We sent it up to you long ago.” One of the workmen said: “I recall it now. There was a stone altogether different from the rest, and we thought there was no place for it and rolled it down to the valley below.” Men were sent down to the valley to find the stone. They succeeded in doing so; when the stone was brought up, it fitted perfectly into its place—the headstone of the corner.1 We are powerfully joined to Jesus and one another. Jesus is the cornerstone, but what does that mean? That’s what we are going to focus on this week’s podcast: Connectedness: How We Are Powerfully Joined to Jesus and One Another.

On the subject of unity, Tony Evans makes the following insightful comments about the purpose of the United States of America. He says, ‘One of the great experiments regarding nationality is the American Experiment. The American Experiment is unique because of its intentionality to bring people from all walks of life, from every nation, under the banner of a single flag and to intentionally seek to bring across to these shores people from all kinds of other nations who would make up a union called the United States of America. This experiment brought people together who would pledge allegiance to a single flag even though their backgrounds were different, unique, and dissimilar. We acknowledge our differences by annotating our original heritages to our current nationality with terms like Irish American, Swedish American, Polish American, African American, or Hispanic American. The introductory phrase cites the uniqueness. The last word cites the unity. I am under the American Banner because I am uniquely based on culture, history, background, or previous location. In this experiment, there was an attempt to have a United States even though the people seeking to be unified were totally different. What the American Experiment represents from a cultural, historical, and geographical perspective to this nation, the church of Jesus Christ was meant to be for the King of Kings and Lord of Lords—people from different backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives, all pledging allegiance to the cross.’ 1 This idea of being one people in Christ, whether male or female, Jew or Gentile, rich or poor, is what the Spirit of God via the Apostle Paul tried to get over to the church of Ephesus. And in this week’s Light on Life podcast, that’s precisely what we are focusing on as we discuss ‘Why Unity Is Essential in All Things God.’

Miracle testimonies of God’s power at work in our lives are something we ought to share. If you have a God story, you should not sit down on it unless the Lord instructed you not to tell it. The scripture says that we overcome by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of our testimony. At the 1997 Brickyard 400 auto race, NASCAR driver Lake Speed learned firsthand the amazing effect of prayer. His car had been having mechanical problems. Sitting on the track in preparation for a qualifying run, he waited in frustration because his car wouldn’t start. Meanwhile, he prayed. Finally, his crew chief Jeff Buice took out a wrench and hand-cranked the engine Model-A style. The car started, and Lake Speed roared onto the track to post the second-fastest qualifying time of the day. Victor Lee writes in Sports Spectrum: Later, when Speed returned to the pits to get ready for a final practice session, he found his crew tearing out the engine. Shocked, he asked what was going on. “Lake, that engine was blown before you qualified,” Buice said, noting that it had blown during NASCAR pre-race inspection. Lake looked more closely. Oil was everywhere. Buice continued, “I wasn’t going to tell you anything because time had run out. But I was already trying to figure out how I would spend Saturday. Even if it started, I surely didn’t expect it to make a lap and surely not to run good enough to make the race.” Lake’s assessment: “God did a major mechanical miracle. I always pray right before the race. Sitting on that track, when it didn’t start, I prayed, ‘Lord, I don’t know what’s going on here, but if there’s any way, I’d like this thing to start.’ ” Driver Lake Speed went on to finish twelfth in the race, his second-best finish in 1997. You may say this has a perfectly natural explanation, or you may call it a miracle. Still, without question, according to the automobile experts on the scene, this was a remarkable event that followed prayer. Funny but remarkable events and coincidences often follow prayer. I had the same miracle along this line occur, and it resulted in a person giving their heart to Jesus. Today, we are taking a look at miracles from heaven. With that in mind, consider the following miracle story. ‘In the U.S. Navy, the Seabees have a saying: “The difficult, we do immediately. The impossible takes a little time.” Author Jamie Buckingham shares this story from the missionary adventures of JAARS (Jungle Aviation and Radio Service—the flying arm for Wycliffe Bible Translators). We pick up his story about a pilot who was fighting to keep his plane from a fatal crash:

Never for an instant did Ralph believe they could live through the pending crash … He could feel his wife’s warm hand on the back of his clammy knuckles where he gripped the stick. “We do our best; God does the rest.” It was the motto of JAARS Jungle Aviation and Radio Service. During all the time of the emergency, he had not called upon God. Why had he waited? Why had he not cried out at ten thousand feet? Now, with death only seconds away, he gulped the words. “Father, if You still have work for my passengers and me, please bring on the engine.” It was a sensible prayer. He could have prayed for a giant hand to rise out of the jungle and cushion his fall. He could have asked for ten thousand angels to bear him up on down wings. But like Moses at the Red Sea, he was content for God to work in natural ways—not by sending a strong east wind to blowback the sea—but by bringing the engine back to life. He had a thought – the carburetor heat! It was used primarily to prevent ice from forming in the carburetor. But, there were no known instances of icing at this altitude. The carburetor heat! Again he tried to dismiss the thought, to spit it out of his mind. But it pounded against the inside of his temples. It rang in his head. And his hand was obedient. He reached down and jerked the carburetor heat handle and, at the same time, pulled back on the stick. The jungle had arrived. The only thing to do was flatten his glide just at the treetops, lose as much speed as possible, and settle into the foliage. Certainly forever. Suddenly there was a mighty roar upfront. The big prop, which had been slowly windmilling in the streaming air, roared to life as if they had never quit. The thousand horses were up and running again, straining at the traces and trying to pull the sinking old Duck out of the jaws of death with all of their might. Ralph’s Canadian dignity, shaken to the soles of his soggy socks, finally broke. It came forth like the sound of a shipwrecked sailor thrown at last upon a sandy beach.

From the very inner part of his soul, an utterance of thanksgiving came forth. “Praise the Lord!” he said with deep reverence and, then, repeated it. “Praise the Lord!” Leadership Ministries Worldwide, Practical Illustrations: Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians (Chattanooga, TN: Leadership Ministries Worldwide, 2001), 96–97. Character that counts is a trait that everyone wants — when I say character, I mean the good variety. A Wall Street broker had fallen in love with a young lady and began dating her. He was very wealthy, and he had to be careful whom he related to. He didn’t want to relate to somebody who would damage him or only come after him for his money. So he had one of his associates hire a private detective to find out everything there was to find out about this lady. He didn’t want to make a mistake. He also didn’t want the private eye to know whom he was doing the investigation for, lest the girl finds out later and think that her love didn’t trust her. The broker got his associate to hire a private eye to check up on this lady without telling the detective who was making the assignment and paying the bill. After several weeks, the report came back on the young lady whom the broker was considering. The report said, “I have investigated this young lady, and she has a squeaky clean life. Perfect in every detail, no flaws, no known mistakes. She is on the up and up in every possible way. However, there is one little possible blip on the screen of her life. She is often seen around town in the company of a young broker whose dubious business practices and principles are well known.” You see, the problem may just be you.1 The Bible talks about character, so we will focus on why God Has Called You to Cultivate a Character that Counts — all in this week’s Light on Life.

Vision is vital. January is the time of the year where people try to catch a new vision. They think about things like resolutions, goals, and direction for the upcoming year. During this time of the year, they make choices and adjustments. They are sensing that some things in their life need change – need improvement. So, they use the January 1st date as a trigger to do better than they did the previous year. Striving forward is a good thing but, while we are looking ahead, it’s also good to look up – to look to the Lord for vision and direction. Explosive vision is seeing things invisible. What’s celebrating Christmas really all about? This is a question that we must be mindful of during every holiday season. A MOTHER was having a gathering to celebrate the birth of her newborn son. She invited a bunch of friends over to celebrate his arrival. She welcomed her guests, and they all had a wonderful time celebrating, eating, and drinking. After a while, one of the ladies said, “Well, bring the baby out. Let us see it.” The mother went to get the baby from his crib—he was nowhere to be found. She started to panic and feel fearful. Suddenly, she remembered that the baby was still at her parents’ house, where she had left him that morning. She and the guests had been having so much fun they had forgotten what the party was about in the first place. During the Christmas season, many people get busy with celebrations and forget that the birth of Jesus Christ is the reason for the season.1

In today’s podcast, we take up the Name of Jesus and its connection to God’s grace and power. The medieval theologian John Duns Scotus was visiting Rome, and the Pope took him into the Vatican treasuries. Running his hands through the silver, the Pope said, “No longer does the church have to say, ‘Silver and gold have I none.’” The theologian replied, “That’s true, but also no longer can we say, ‘In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise and walk.’” 1 That’s an impactful and telling story that illustrates what happens when money becomes the focus of one’s life. We must cling to the Name of Jesus and hold it in high esteem in our lives. There is nothing like the Name of Jesus for restraining anger, assuaging the swellings of pride, healing the wound of envy, restraining the course of wantonness, quenching the flame of lust, moderating the thirst of covetousness, and putting to flight all lasciviousness. For when I name Jesus, I set before myself the image of the Man, meek and lowly, kind of heart, sober, chaste, merciful, peerless in purity and holiness, and at the same time, the Almighty God, who heals by His example, and strengthens us by His help.2 Having access to Jesus’ Name and the power invested in it is our focus on today’s Light On Life.

Latching on to God’s Grace is the thought today as we continue our focus on the book of Ephesians. We began to look at the subject of grace in a previous podcast, and there is just so much that we can come to know and understand about the magnitude of God’s favor toward us. God’s grace is universal to all men. One Sunday many years ago, a particular gentleman was part of a touring party in Cairo, Egypt. We were strangers in a strange land. We were separated from the nationals by language, dress, culture, and different economic and political systems. Furthermore, we were Christians; they were Muslims. We had heard the people talk with one another all day, but not one word did we understand. That evening in a little Baptist church, we were welcomed, not as American tourists but as fellow Christians. The first song we sang was “Amazing Grace.” They sang in Arabic; we sang in English. Overriding it all was our mutual love for Christ and one another. Truly God in Christ had made of two, one new people.1 So, you see, grace connects in multiple languages. It connects but are we grasping all that grace is? So, in this podcast, we hope to add to our understanding of this vital subject: More of Why You Should Latch on to God’s Grace — that’s our focus on this week’s Light on Life.
