Questions? hello@cpenneagram.com
The whole process of working with the Enneagram to grow and transform is based on observing what’s really happening to us. Self-observation and self-reflection sometimes sound simple, but as a psychotherapist, Beatrice Chestnut knows from working with clients that it doesn’t come naturally to us. People are often very surprised at what they find when they intentionally try to observe something in themselves.
The Enneagram helps point out patterns in our personality that we can intentionally observe. Once we make our unconscious patterns conscious, it’s almost like our personality loses its reason for being. Because the personality is a self-defensive structure, shining a light onto our unconscious patterns makes it easier to eventually work on letting them go.
Beatrice Chestnut and Uranio Paes provide practical ideas about what to do for each of the nine Enneagram types to notice our personality patterns and how to make them more conscious.

Questions? hello@cpenneagram.com
Pulling from the theory of Claudio Narajano, Bea and Uranio share some common myths and misconceptions about Enneagram types when subtypes are not understood.
When referring to subtypes, they are not referring to Wings. They use instinctual subtypes, which describe the mix of the passion of the type and dominant instinct, which is either self-preservation, social, or sexual. It is easy to think people of the same type are similar because they share a common passion. However, the dominant instinct influences the passion, and the subtype places a spotlight on the traits that make people different within each type.
For decades, Bea and Uranio studied the instinctual subtypes in-depth, but they also put the subtypes to the test by helping individuals and seeing subtypes work in practice. This is a great episode that can help prevent mistyping and guide people to their distinct growth paths.

Most people use the heart center superficially, meaning they use reactive and conditioned emotions, like an emotional reflex. In this episode, Beatrice Chestnut and Uranio Paes go through each of the nine types and describe ways in which all Enneagram types can Activate their Heart Center and truly feel the four core emotions: fear, anger, sadness, and happiness. Activating the Heart Center is important for all types, including Heart types. It’s a sign of emotional maturity. It is when someone can deeply feel a range of emotions rather than disconnect from them, avoid them, or express them reactively.

Every Enneagram type has a head center. While types Five, Six, and Seven overuse this center, the Body and Heart types underuse it.
In this episode, Uranio Paes explains that the majority of people use the most basic part of the lower Head Center too often and during inappropriate times. It is the mechanical part of the brain that is used to memorize information without critical thinking or reasoning. In this mode, people are vulnerable to confirmation bias because anything that challenges the current way of thinking is avoided. Uranio describes the phases of developing the Head Center and how it can test our understanding of the world around us.
Also, this episode’s Top Five is light-hearted. It is the top five most interesting things that Uranio Paes noticed about Beatrice Chestnut.

We are not our personalities. However, when we are unaware of our lower selves, it’s easy to identify with our personalities. In this episode, Uranio Paes goes through each of the nine types to give examples of how to fool the personality so that we can be free from its hold on us.
Each of the nine Enneagram types has an over-developed Center of Intelligence. Uranio talks about The Fourth Way, an approach to self-development created by George Gurdjieff. Gurdjieff was the pioneer who brought the Enneagram to the West. He taught that the first way is the way of the body, the second is the way of the heart, and the third is the way of the mind. The Fourth Way is mixing these three Centers of Intelligence so our personality doesn’t control how we react and we can be a more complete human beyond the confines of our personality.

Bea and Uranio interviewed Trent Thornley, a Self-Preservation Six, to find out what helped him in his growth journey and to learn about how he experiences his Enneagram type and subtype. He talks about how he came to the Enneagram. He discussed how the Enneagram gave him Ah ha moments as well as uh oh moments. Trent discussed that all nine types have needs, it’s just that there is an over-functioning or over-dependency on the needs of each Enneagram type. He shared there is a false sense of security in the act of doubting. There is an unconscious idea that constant doubting will bring the Self-Preservation Six to a conclusion that will bring the truth of the matter and more importantly, security. How does he work through this false idea?
This is a powerful interview with many insights for those who are Self-Preservation Six subtypes or have Self-Preservation Six subtypes in their lives.
Trent served as President of the International Enneagram Association in 2022 and 2023. He is the Executive Director and Director of Clinical Pastoral Education at the San Francisco Night Ministry and an ordained Buddhist Dharma Leader in the Nyingma lineage. Trent is also an ordained minister in the Metropolitan Community Churches, a progressive Christian denomination with an outreach to the LGBTQ+ community.

It's easy to look at the nine Types when trying to understand how people behave and react in relationships. However, considering the 27 Subtypes is essential to understanding relationships.
Subtypes are not just about the instincts of the individual, but how the instinct interacts with the passion of the type. The alchemistry is what plays out
In this episode, Beatrice Chesnut and Uranio Paes discuss both from the point of view of the person with a subtype and how another person may experience the person in a relationship.
They even give tips on how to interact with each subtype in a relationship.

In the Enneagram, Arrows and Wings are central to understanding how the symbol can be used as a tool for personal development. In this episode, Beatrice Chesnut and Uranio describe the Enneagram not as a static symbol, but as a symbol in movement, using the teachings from the philosopher George Gurdjieff.
There is an order that each type can take that eases the challenges the ego will face when evolving into a higher self. They explain how to discern between positive and negative movements towards wings and arrows, and why a balanced approach is necessary.

Over the 3.5 years since we started Enneagram 2.0, we have met students who wanted to apply what they learned on the podcast to their own inner work. But we have also received important feedback—our retreats can be very intense, and dipping your toes into the methodology we use can be important to do before investing in that process.
That's why Bea and Uranio have created a retreat called The Way of the Enneagram. It is inspired by listeners like you who have been committed to inner work using the wisdom of the Enneagram. They talk about the initial steps that each of the nine types can take once they learn their type. They discuss how this particular retreat is designed to help students navigate the core issues of their personality and learn how to put theory into practice. The Enneagram is a map of transformation and it is about entering into a growth process that can be as deep as you want it to be.

People tend to have a simplified understanding of the Centers when it comes to the original teachings of George Gurdjieff. They discuss the power that each Center of Intelligence has and how each type has a bias towards over using its associated center. Learn about discerning which center we are coming from in situations and how to avoid the wrong use of the centers.

This is a sample from a rich inner work retreat Bea and Uranio are teaching in Thailand this week. In this episode, Bea and Uranio discuss the Enneagram symbol and how it can be seen as a map for growth in Levels of Awareness. If we think of the Enneagram as typology only, we run the risks of stereotyping and judgment. A way to see this clearly is to recognize that different types are praised and criticized depending on the Enneagram type of the surrounding culture. They discuss the Enneagram as a map of transformation and how we can see it as a path for raising awareness.

You have probably heard about the passion of each Enneagram type, but there is not a lot of discussion around the fixations of each type. Just like passions are the core of the lower emotional center, fixations are the core of the lower mental center. Each Enneagram type has its own narrow way of viewing the world, which structures the thought patterns that they unconsciously stay stuck in. In this episode, Bea and Uranio discuss the insightful Enneagram topic of fixations and ways in which we can break free from limiting beliefs that stunt our inner work

When we teach, one of the things we notice is how much students and participants resist the many revelations the subtypes provide us. There are so many elements of the subtypes that we misunderstand and in this episode, we would like to set the foundations for what they are and why we have trouble taking in the insights that they offer.
We were inspired to cover this topic because we have a brand-new course coming up, Master the Enneagram Subtypes for Maximum Growth on January 24, 2023. It will be a 20-hour course over 10 two-hour sessions. It will include film clips to demonstrate what each of the subtypes looks like and to highlight the core motivations that are so different even within type.

The nine Enneagram types tell us a lot, but the Enneagram subtypes descriptions offer an even more nuanced view of the personality types, shedding light on our most unconscious level of functioning so we can become more self-aware. The Enneagram describes three centers of human intelligence—the head, heart, and body. Each triad then divides into three to create nine interconnected personality types. These types also each have their own triad—the third level of three—the 27 subtypes. Subtypes are based on whether a person has a predominant instinctual drive toward Self-Preservation, Social interaction in groups, or One-to-one bonding. In this one-hour event, Bea and Uranio will discuss the Enneagram subtypes—everything you wanted to know (but didn't know to ask) ahead of their 2023 series, Mastering the 27 Enneagram Subtypes for Maximum Growth.

This one may especially provide great instincts as you will have Beatrice, a Self-Preservation dominant alongside Uranio, a Self-Preservation repressed person. The communication styles of the nine types represent part of the unconscious pattern of how the type expresses itself. The Enneagram type is largely defined by the inner experience rather than what is presented outwardly. However, the parts of the ego that we do show are through acts of communication, either verbal or non-verbal. In this week’s episode, Bea and Uranio discuss the ways in which the nine types have different styles of communication that are largely influenced by their personality.

All Enneagram types have a particular thing that they focus their attention on (often unconsciously). Understanding each of these points of focus is one of the best ways for people to learn about the Nine types and the 27 subtypes. People tend to become very good at the thing they pay attention to, but they tend to miss the bigger picture. For inner growth, it’s essential to expand your vision and to be able to shift your focus to things that your personality tries hard to hide.
Bea and Uranio offer tips on how to observe what you habitually pay attention to and how to expand your narrow focus to encompass a greater, more balanced perspective so that you can mature both psychologically and spiritually.

In this week’s episode, enjoy a sample of Beatrice Chestnut and Uranio Paes's CPO exclusive quarterly Q&As. Members have the chance to ask any question that they have about the Enneagram, and Bea and Uranio answer them live on Zoom. The great thing is that everyone benefits from these questions and a lot of times people ask great questions that others might not have thought to ask.
Some of the questions include:
Which types avoid shame the most?
What does merging actually mean as a nine?
Do 4s introject positive as well as negative emotions?
How can I differentiate between different subtypes of the same type?
Can you define the differences between head, heart, and body crying?
Is a particular subtype’s arrow movement different than the other two subtypes’ arrow movements of the same type?
What does the growth path look like for Social 7s?

In this week’s episode, Beatrice Chestnut and Uranio Paes talk about the Enneagram Types and Subtypes of world leaders of today and of the past— from Zelenskyy to Obama, from Ghandi to the Royal Family. Coming from a place of humility, they share that this is an informal conversation where they discuss opinions that are based on experience and research and are not absolute facts.
Some leaders connect with emotions and are charming while others are angry and unable to apologize. Having conversations about what a famous leader's Enneagram type and Subtype could be is one of the ways we learn about what those types are all about. It’s not about being right, it's about marshaling evidence and having fun while developing an understanding of the nuances of different Subtypes. As leaders, any type with a low level of awareness in a position of power can act out in negative ways, which is why Bea and Uranio work so hard to raise consciousness.

In this week’s episode, Beatrice Chestnut and Uranio Paes, discuss the launch of their new adaptive Enneagram typing test, Chestnut Paes Sullivan Enneagram Compass. They discuss why Enneagram tests could be a good thing, how they can help people, and also what to keep in mind in terms of the downsides of taking an Enneagram test. After spending years on this assessment with their partner Fergus Sullivan, who has experience in using psychometrics, they understood that the big stumbling block is that test questions tend to focus on blind spots, typically the unconscious side of personalities. Therefore, they felt the test needs to ask specific questions leading not just to the Type, but to the Subtype, to provide more accurate results.
Bea and Uranio created beautiful, customized 20-page reports, diving deep into strengths, challenges, and even growth paths for each Subtype. The report also contains a comparison to your second-highest-ranking type, for the minority of test-takers who feel that the first type doesn’t accurately describe their personality. It’s designed mainly for professionals to use in business, but it can be taken for personal use, as well.

In this week's episode, Uranio Paes interviews Beatrice Chestnut about one of her favorite topics—Dante’s Divine Comedy and its connections to the Enneagram. Bea studied English Literature in undergrad and has always been fascinated with analyzing literature and looking for themes within stories. She decided to read Dante’s Divine Comedy looking for not only the types and the passions but different elements about the Enneagram, especially as a path of spiritual transformation. In this 700 year old masterpiece that is still very relevant today, there are three sections, Inferno, Purgatory, and Paradise, which map out different states of awareness and the process to achieve higher states of being.
This summer, Beatrice Chestnut returns to Florence, Italy to conduct a workshop to help students discover the intersections of Dante’s work with the Enneagram system through lectures, music, art, dialogue, meditation, and bodywork. Students will explore Florence’s ancient streets through daily excursions, piazzas, restaurants, food, and wine. Learn more at https://www.novevie.it/dante/

In this week's episode, Beatrice Chestnut and Uranio Paes share a sample of one of their live monthly video webinars, an exclusive perk for CP Online members. This particular webinar is about the healthy use of the Heart Center. With a low level of awareness, every intelligence center tends to overuse their type’s center and often steal energy from the other centers. When using the Heart Center in a healthy way, Type Twos, Threes, and Fours don’t use emotions as much when activities call for the Gut or Head Centers of Intelligence.

In this week's episode, Beatrice Chestnut and Uranio Paes discuss the much anticipated Instinctual Sequences in Personality Types. Instincts are the animal drives that have helped us survive as a species and in the context of the personality, it is broken down into self-preservation, social, and sexual instincts. People have an instinctual sequence (one being dominant, one being second, and one being repressed) and these instinctual sequences are biological energies with dialectical tension with each other. Bea and Uranio describe general behavioral tendencies for the 6 sequences and offer suggestions on how to discover your own instinctual sequence and how it can benefit your growth journey.

In this week's episode, Uranio Paes interviews Domingos Cunha, a good friend, a successful Enneagram teacher, and a Catholic priest. As an Enneagram Type Eight, Domingos shares how he had the belief that the world was against him, and if he showed any love and compassion, he would feel shame out of fear of appearing weak. He used to be proud when people would share concerns about him taking on too much work and responsibility because he felt it was a sign of strength, but now he feels good when he slows down, relaxes, and enjoys the company of others.

This week, Beatrice Chestnut and Uranio Paes discuss how low levels of awareness can be dangerous for any type. They discuss what type they think Vladimir Putin could be and what could have caused his choice to invade Ukraine. This is a reminder that the path of least resistance is to identify with the Ego, which is to say we see ourselves as individuals separate from others, and the Enneagram helps us to observe and disidentify with the Ego and connect to something more collective.

In this episode, Beatrice Chestnut and Uranio Paes talk with Dina El-Badry, a Type Six who is the head of the Enneagram track at the school The Field of Awakening in Cairo, Egypt. Dina, a Sexual Subtype, describes what it was like to be one with her ego and the realization that she was driven mostly by fear her entire life. She tells the emotional story of the pivotal moment in her growth path when she felt completely paralyzed by fear and then all of a sudden, was completely filled with true courage. She uses the quote “The only way out is through” to explain her experience and understands that true courage is not the absence of fear, but rather continuing to move forward despite the fear.

In this episode, Beatrice Chestnut and Uranio Paes talk with Todd Pierce, a Type Seven who was introduced to the Enneagram in 2004. He shares from experience what it's like to be stuck in personality; there is a false sense of freedom that comes from avoiding problems by using extreme optimism. The journey is about opening up to what is happening now, engaging with life moment to moment, and not using the process of planning to escape the pain of the present.

In this episode, Beatrice Chestnut and Uranio Paes talk about gratitude not being a simple emotion, but rather a higher emotion that can elevate us when we feel it in a sincere way. Gratitude naturally reveals itself when we open up our spiritual hearts. Each Enneagram type has its own path and hurdles to feeling grateful, and they share ideas of what people can do to move into gratitude and out of the low side of the personality and the ego.

Who is Gurdjieff, and why do we hear so much about his work in the Enneagram world? One of Beatrice and Uranio's biggest areas of commonality in their approach to teaching the Enneagram is their commitment to its origins and its seminal, foundational texts. In this episode, you will learn about G. I. Gurdjieff and The Fourth Way, the path he defined for human beings to work on the head, heart, and body levels in daily life. Find out how he views the connection between major religions around the world, how inner work is a path for spiritual growth, and what it all has to do with the Enneagram as we know it today.

In this episode, Beatrice Chestnut and Uranio Paes discuss the unconscious patterns of our type that limit our professional potential. They also explain how our type influences the careers toward which we are naturally inclined, naturally succeed in, and how those inclinations may keep us stuck in our patterns, preventing our growth and self-development. When we learn about the Enneagram, we often apply it first to our relationships. But we often look at it only from a type perspective, without bringing in the Enneagram's centers of intelligence as a framework of analysis. A few weeks ago, we started this discussion with the Enneagram's heart types and what is important to them in relationships. Now let's hear from the head types. In this episode, Uranio, a head type himself, discusses what head types need, what core issues emerge in relationships, and how those around them can help support them. What can those in relationship with a head type do to make it healthier? And what can we all learn through the lens of the head intelligence center?

Bea and Uranio put together three practical steps that look different for each of the nine types. In this episode, they offer a behind-the-scenes look at their new co-authored book, The Enneagram Guide to Waking Up. They share the motivations they had for writing the book together, the journey they went on, and how the process of writing it helped them discover exciting insights about themselves. Where do you begin when you want to do high-quality inner work? Across history, we have seen spiritual paths as isolated approaches to personal development, and more recently, a sole focus on psychological work. But one powerful method to meaningful inner development that "sticks" is a combination of the two. We think the Enneagram is an amazing model that maps out a path of development and inherently includes both. So then what is psychological work? What is spiritual work? How do they differ, how do they influence each other, and how can the Enneagram help you use them both in your journey?

Relationships are important for all nine types, but for heart types (Types Two, Three, and Four), they are essential. Those who are heart types or have been in relationship with them know this well. They also probably know that making those relationships work requires a deep understanding of what heart types need. In this episode, Bea and Uranio break it down for us—what makes heart types happy? Frustrated? Hurt? What can those in relationship with a heart type do to make it healthier? And what can we all learn through the lens of the heart intelligence center?

One of the top questions we receive in our community is around other personality tests—how does the Enneagram compare? What about Myers Briggs? What are the overlaps? And the truth is that like the Enneagram, depending on who teaches the material, we often have a shallow understanding of the system and the growth potential it can offer. Our whole perspective on Myers Briggs changed completely when we met our good friends, authors, and fellow podcasters, Joel Mark Witt and Antonia Dodge of Personality Hacker. "Trauma happens to us, our friends, our families, and our neighbors," says Bessel van der Kolk, seminal author in the study of trauma. And in our work at the Chestnut Paes Enneagram Academy, we know it's true. At every retreat we host, a big portion of our work involves supporting our students in healing from trauma. But how does the Enneagram fit into the equation? Are there specific patterns in the ways that we see different Enneagram types and people of different instinctual sequences dealing with their trauma? In this episode, Beatrice Chestnut and Uranio Paes explore this intersection—of trauma and its manifestations in relation to our personalities. Tune into this important episode and learn how this is impacting your life and the lives of those around you.

Each of us believes something so deeply that our reality is completely distorted by that belief. The nine Enneagram types each have a core fixation—a lens through which we view the world. And around that fixation, we build a series of ideas that keep us stuck. Claudio Naranjo, a pioneer of the Enneagram system of personality, provocatively called these the "crazy ideas" that each type holds. So what are yours? In this episode, Beatrice Chestnut and Uranio Paes discuss the "crazy" ideas that we all need to overcome to develop fully and get out of our own way. They use Naranjo's language to provide continuity and context to this work. They would like to make clear that they are in no way referring to any symptoms or manifestations of mental illness, but rather, a battle that all of us have regardless of mental health.

Whether you are a professional trying to use the Enneagram in coaching or therapy, or just can't seem to land on the right Enneagram type, you know that typing is not easy. The Enneagram system of personality and the nine types hold enormous complexity. Given the Enneagram's recent increase in popularity and the influx of new "experts" in the field, mistyping may even be a growing phenomenon. Unfortunately, the consequences can be dire. Types can have completely different growth paths and if we get our type wrong, we may be doing the wrong work for our personal development. If you are a professional, the consequences and ethical implications are even more significant. In this episode, Beatrice Chestnut and Uranio Paes draw on their decades of experience conducting typing interviews and reveal what we often get wrong about typing and how we can do better.

We often hear about the strengths and challenges associated with each Enneagram type. But what if our leadership potential had more to do with disidentifying with the confines of our type? In this episode, Beatrice Chestnut and Uranio Paes draw upon decades of leadership development experience using the Enneagram and discuss the leadership paths for each type. They also discuss the Enneagram more broadly in leadership and how the tool can be particularly useful for those engaging in professional development work in any capacity.

Here’s the one you have all been waiting for. What do Beatrice and Uranio really think about the role of wings on the Enneagram? You might notice that you never hear us refer to a type with a dominant wing attached to it (e.g. 1w2) and there’s a specific reason for that. In this episode, you will hear Bea and Uranio discuss foundational Enneagram theory as it relates to the wings. What does identifying a dominant wing really do for your growth and what does it actually mean? Hear them as they convince you that wings are not subtypes and teach us how to use them as balancing growth stretch points so that we don’t stay stuck in our personality patterns. They will also discuss the history of the wings in the Enneagram and how we can ensure that Enneagram theory moves forward, prioritizing growth over diagnosis.

We all act out our emotions when triggered and personality moves us to a space of reactivity. But how do we learn to contain the behavior when these tendencies feel so hardwired and out of our control? Did you know that even heart types need to develop emotionally? The Enneagram symbol provides us with wisdom around the three centers: body, heart, and head. So, with all of this at play, how does your Enneagram type deal with emotions and how can the Enneagram help you develop emotionally? Every Enneagram type avoids feeling one of the four basic emotions: anger, sadness, fear, and happiness. As teachers, Bea and Uranio have witnessed first-hand the impact of the Enneagram on relationships between partners and family members. In every case, with each of the nine points of the Enneagram, there are two subtypes that go with the flow of the energy of the passion and there is one that is upside-down, one that goes against the main energetic direction of the passion. This "counter-passional" type is called the "counter-type" of the three subtypes. The most well-known of the counter-types is the counter-phobic Six. It's a kind of Six that is unafraid. The passion of the Six is Fear, but the Sexual subtype, one of the three Six subtypes, goes against fear by being strong and intimidating as a way of coping with Fear. In this episode, Beatrice Chestnut and Uranio Paes discuss all of the counter-types of the nine types.

In this episode, Beatrice Chestnut and Uranio Paes teach us what the difference is between the two, how to identify one's dominant instinct, and how to use instinctual work to support your inner work. They also discuss how these instinctual drives operate in personality and what an instinctual sequence might look like, including the role of repressed instincts in our lives.
