Reggie Williams isn't mad, he just wonders why, as do we and so many others.
But, Reggie has a lot of other things on his mind, like helping Disney create the Wide World of Sports complex, like fighting the pain every day that his body withstood and the 24 knee operations he needed. Certainly, the fact that his left leg is 3 1/2 inches shorter than his right leg and how his strength and perseverance gets him through each day.
REGGIE WILLIAMS' story is one of will, of mental toughness and gratitude. And we're honored to have him as our guest on The Approach Shot.

But DREW STOREN made his own way by being a virtually unhittable pitcher in high school and at Stanford before pitching in the Majors. In his second year in the big leagues, Storen became the closer for the upstart Washington Nationals and saved 43 games. His love for the game and his 13 year major league career eventually drove him to the fields where dreams are made- in Iowa.
There, with his partners, he now bottles whiskey and bourbon (whiskey) with the iconic "Field of Dreams" brand. How does a kid from Indiana go from pitcher to businessman with THAT brand?

Yes, he is a three time Pro Bowler with the Seattle Seahawks. Yes he is a two time national champion with the Trojans of USC. But where did the fire and passion come from? In fact, he was the last "original" member of the Jays, having been drafted by the Red Sox, but the Blue Jays took him in the expansion draft, as he was the anchor of the team for a decade. His power at the plate and his defensive prowess behind the plate made him one of MLB's great players from 1975-1991.
And man, does he love talking golf!

When you play college football for UCLA, one of LA's two big college football programs, you are certainly not guaranteed a part in a popular TV show.
DONOVAN CARTER is the exception. His hard work, good fortune and persistence landed him the part of Vernon Littlefield on HBO's hugely successful "Ballers" (starring Dwayne Johnson).
Still humble, funny and grateful for his success, Donovan is a terrific young man, still hungry and feeling blessed. Our conversation reveals how much Donovan is in Vernon. It's a terrific listen!
When you turn on Fox 26's Morning show, you will see our buddy Nate Griffin, but doing what? Who knows? He is the sportscaster for the show, but has also been the general assignments reporter. That means he could be talking with politicians, city officials, sports stars or business owners. So he is a man of the people and you can tell listening to him, that he loves what he does.
He's also done color commentary for Rice Football for decades, and is just one of those lucky people that has love for his city, and is loved by his city.

Nate "The Great" Griffin is insightful, smooth and hilarious and we are delighted that he stopped by to share his tales with us on this week's episode of The Approach Shot.
He was a first round draft pick of the Denver Broncos. He went to the Super Bowl as a rookie and played with guys like Peyton Manning and Von Miller. But the Broncos lost that game, and it was humbling for Sylvester Williams. Two years later, the Broncos won Super Bowl 50.
Not bad for a guy who only started ONE high school football game, after which he was a walk-on at Coffeyyville Community College, then transferred to North Carolina and was named All-ACC and then an All-American as senior.
That seemed to be the way things go for Sylvester Williams (known as "Sly"). He has spent most of his life overcoming long odds to enjoy success through hard work and perseverance. After all, one doesn't live like a champion by taking short cuts.
This is an amazing story of a life that could have easily gone in the wrong direction, but didn't and because of his personal make-up, couldn't.
To a baseball purist, Pete LaCock was a dangerous hitter. His eye, his plate discpline and his ability to come through in the clutch allowed him to have a terrific 9 year MLB career before playing in Japan. But it's his love for the game, his rivalry with Hall of Famer Bob Gibson, and his famous family (and their friends) that make this such an endearing conversation with a great storyteller.

Randy tells his very personal story of being addicted to opioids, mostly so he wouldn't lose his spot on the roster. Not wanting to be "the guy who is always in the trainer's room or on the injured list" Randy did whatever it took to stay in the line-up. That included getting hooked on painkillers until the end of his career. For years after, he felt the effects, and his story is both eye opening and uplifting.

A 6 year veteran of Major League Baseball, turned pre and post game host for the Cincinnati Reds on Bally Sports, Sam LeCure certainly has the resume to be a strong guest on The Approach Shot. This is Part Two of our conversation with longtime columnist and author JOHN EISENBERG. We talk about his golf game, and he faces (and aces) the dreaded SIX PACK!
We talk about his new book, "Rocket Men", which offers an inside look at the Black quarterbacks whose skill and grit transformed the NFL; and some of his other books including "The League", which focuses on the pioneering sportsmen who kept the league alive in the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s, when its challenges were many and its survival was not guaranteed; and "The Streak" the book dedicated to Cal Ripken pursuit and eventually takeover of Lou Gehrig's Iron Man record. This is a great listen from a terrific storyteller.
As a kid, I dreamt of going to the biggest sporting events; Super Bowls and World Series games, NBA Finals and the Masters. It all seemed to glamorous and historic. We talk with long time BALTIMORE SUN columnist JOHN EISENBERG about how lucky he was to have covered them all. But he also points out that for columnists, who have to write SOMETHING every day, it's a job, and not an easy one.
After almost 30 years with the Sun, John evolved into an amazing author of books like "Rocket Men", "The League" and others. We'll talk about that in Part 2 of our conversation, which comes out later this week.
In Part One with Derek Kennard, we talked about Super Bowls, his playing with a severely separated shoulder during the Cowboys Super Bowl win and how he had to be tough to deal with the emotions of winning and losing.
Part Two is a slightly softer side. Derek talks about his very personal battle with sleep apnea and how difficult is was to find a proper treatment. He then became a champion for others who are having to deal with this issue. Don't worry, it's not all softer; Derek dominates the 6 pack too!

But MIKE ADAMS, with help from a determined father, his grandma's amazing homemade tortillas and natural athletic ability had a 10 year MLB career. Having pitched for the Brewers, Padres, Rangers and Phillies, Mike pitched to an incredible 2.48 lifetime ERA and an even more amazing 1.085 lifetime WHIP. He struck out 408 batters in his career while only walking 126. He also won a World Series game against the Cardinals. Now that's a pitcher with incredible control. His time on the ice certainly doesn't define this man who has had multiple brain cancer diagnoses, voluntarily had brain surgery, and who does so much for the cancer community; neither does cancer define him.
What makes Scott Hamilton such a joy is his tirelessly upbeat personality. He says "Every time something bad happened, I realized something good came from it".

UCLA Basketball star Travis Reed has made some tough decisions in his life including deciding to play overseas instead of the NBA. Of course, a lot of those decisions worked out well for the 6'8" power forward as he became the league MVP in Holland and the Baltic League Player of the Year.
These days, Travis talks about hoops and stays true to his roots as he can be heard on the "Bleav in UCLA" podcast, and on his "An Athlete's Journey" show on You Tube. There he can be seen interviewing "California Legends" that he has known throughout HIS journey.

From broadcasting Cubs games opposite Harry Carey to NFL Games for Fox while always remembering his roots in Cincinnati, Brennaman is (simply put) one of the All-Time greats.
In August of 2020, Brennaman was fired from Fox when we was caught on a hot mic making an unfortunate anti-gay slur (which we do not condone) and immediately apologized, and has spent time since the incident consistently apologizing and insisting "that's not who he is", which many folks, including those in the LGBTQ+ community agree with.
We spend much of this episode celebrating his great career, and while we don't usually get into the controversial, Thom spends time discussing the incident, as well.

This week on The Approach Shot Podcast our guest is former NHL Goalie, John Vanbiesbrouck. Vanbiesbrouck was a hybrid goaltender who combined the butterfly style and the more traditional stand-up style. He was strong at playing his angles and challenged shooters well. Small for a goaltender, standing only 5' 8", he relied on his quickness to regain his feet after making saves or to make additional saves in goalmouth scrambles. Vanbiesbrouck was aggressive when it came to playing the puck, which helped him tie the Rangers single season record for assists by a goaltender and set the Rangers career record as well. (Since broken by Henrik Lundqvist). Vanbiesbrouck is the Rangers all-time leader in penalty minutes by a goaltender, with 212. What can you say about Ed Marinaro? He finished 2nd in the Heisman trophy voting in 1971. He was drafted and played in Minnesota. He went on to play professional football for six seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, New York Jets and Seattle Seahawks, appearing in Super Bowl VIII and Super Bowl IX with the Vikings. He scored 13 touchdowns over his career. When he retired from football he became an actor. He is known as a regular cast member on Hill Street Blues, playing Officer Joe Coffey for five seasons . He has been a cast member on a number of television series, including Laverne & Shirley and Sisters. Now he lives in Charleston SC and plays golf. The perfect end to a perfect life. Mitchell Laurance and his identical twin brother Matthew Laurance appear occasionally together, beginning when they were children in a margarine TV commercial which featured identical twins, and later in an episode of the TV series Cop Rock. Although Matthew was a performer on Saturday Night Live for its sixth season, Mitchell also appeared in uncredited roles on the show for a few seasons (1977–80)[1] and was an associate director and producer for the show.[4]
Mitchell appeared on Not Necessarily the News during the 1980s. Other recurring roles were on the TV series, including the very short-lived series Roxie (1987; most of the episodes were unaired), L.A. Law (1987−88), Reasonable Doubts (1992–93), Matlock (1988−95), and Dawson's Creek. Guest roles have ranged from Laverne & Shirley, CHiPs, The Outer Limits, One Tree Hill, Night Court, Prison Break, MacGyver, Beauty and the Beast, Midnight Caller, Empty Nest, and Jake and the Fatman. He was in the "Apollo One" episode of the mini-series From the Earth to the Moon (1998).[1] In the early 1990s he performed the role of Ben Arnold on the soap opera Santa Barbara.
He also has acted in feature films such as Stepfather II, The Runestone, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, and Urban Mythology, and TV movies (especially in the 1990s) including The Almost Perfect Bank Robbery, Perfect Crime, To Love, Honor and Deceive, Kiss and Tell, Deadly Pursuits, Inflammable, and Death in Small Doses.[1]
He has been a radio disk jockey at WFMZ, a sports radio station in Charlotte, North Carolina. He has hosted billiards tournaments and has provided sports commentary for ESPN. He has also been the host of a golf podcast, Golf Connections with Mitch Laurance

Carl Lee III was not heavily recruited out of high school by D1 teams. He accepted an offer from Marshall University in Huntington WVa. He was from Charleston WVa so Marshall was the obvious choice. He won a total of 8 games in his 4 years there. He was drafted in the 7th round by the Vikings. He was told he was too small, too slow to make it in the NFL. He was cut before his rookie year started, but was brought back in 4 days because of an injury to the player above him on the depth chart. 12 years later Carl is recognized as one of the 50 greatest Minnesota Vikings of ALL TIME! Carl’s is a wonderful story on what a person can accomplish if they don’t believe the naysayers. And Carl has some terrific insights into his golf game too. Garrett Johnston has covered golf for outlets around the world for more than a decade, including the hometown papers of most players on the PGA Tour. He also has contributed to GolfDigest.com, Golf.com, USOpen.com, China Daily, The Irish Examiner and New Zealand Golf Magazine. Sadly, he has not improved his golf handicap since he left high school, and covering 30 major championship hasn’t helped him through osmosis. Blake was known for his speed and powerful, flat forehand. During his career, Blake amassed 24 singles finals appearances (10–14 record), while his career-high singles ranking was World No. 4. Career highlights included reaching the final of the 2006 Tennis Masters Cup, the semifinals of the Beijing Olympics, the quarterfinals of the Australian Open (2008) and US Open (2005, 2006), as well as two titles at the Hopman Cup (2003, 2004) and being the No. 1 ranked American singles player. Blake was a key performer for the United States 2007 Davis Cup championship team, going 2–0 in the championship tie vs. Russia at second singles. In 2005, Blake was presented with the Comeback Player of the Year award for his remarkable return to the tour. Later, in 2008, Blake was awarded another honor by the ATP, where he was named the Arthur Ashe Humanitarian of the Year. On July 3, 2007, Blake's autobiography, Breaking Back: How I Lost Everything and Won Back My Life, which discussed his comeback after his unlucky 2004 season, was released and debuted at No. 22 on the New York Times Best Seller list. He co-wrote this book with Andrew Friedman. Ken Harvey is our first guest to kick off the new year. Harvey played professional football in the National Football League as an outside linebacker for the Phoenix Cardinals and the Washington Redskins from 1988 to 1998. He played college ball at the University of California, Berkeley and was selected by the Cardinals in the first round (12th overall) in the 1988 NFL Draft. He was the first player ever selected by the Cardinals after their move to Arizona. Harvey was a four-time Pro Bowl selection from 1994 to 1997. In his career, he appeared in 164 games and recorded 89 sacks. Ken has a children’s book he has written that is now available on Amazon teaching children some physical responsibilities and is working now for a financial advisory firm. He has some great stories. We had a lot of fun talking to Ken and you will have a lot of fun listening in on that conversation. And then Daniel Storrow slips onto our “Golf Is A Funny Game” segment. He is a stand up comic with a slanted outlook on life. We explain how to use golf to enhance his dating life. We can only hope it works.
