Hi. My name is Mike Maeshiro. I'm a serial entrepreneur, a mentor and coach. I've been teaching on spiritual intelligence and emotional health for the last five years. I've learned a lot and it has been fascinating to observe what people have done with me. I wanted a place where I wasn't teaching and more inviting my audience on the journey with me in a candid and exploratory way. So I started this podcast. I hope my journey is helpful for yours. Sit back, relax and let's dive in.

Season 2: Episode 5
Coming out as a gay Christian pastor is one of the most difficult and challenging things I’ve done. It's February 1, 2022. It's time and this is my story.
It has been scary to consider and I didn’t know where to start my research. I had some big questions that I thought I already knew the answers to, I’m so glad I looked into it. Some of those questions were:
Does the Bible condemn homosexuality?
What does God say about gay people?
What does the Bible say about gay people?
Is being gay a sin?
Can you stop being a homosexual?
Can I change my sexuality?
What does the bible say about homosexuality?
Is it okay to be gay?
Can you be a Christian and gay?
Are there gay Christians in the world?
Will I be deceived?
I spent the most of my life saying that I was “same-sex attracted” or that I “struggled with my sexuality.” I grew up in the Evangelical church, started out Baptist, became non-denominational, and eventually landed in the charismatic movement. I wasn’t committed to any of these forms of Christianity, they merely served as context for me to wrestle through the supernatural encounters I was experiencing with the Holy Spirit. I’ve always been a very spiritual person, sensitive to spiritual influences and atmospheres. I discovered knowing the Bible and living a spirit-led life were two very different things. I was told at a young age that gay people were going to hell. I didn’t realized there was a whole world of Queer theology out there. It takes a lot to go against your religious tradition. It was the voice of God that inspired me to challenge what I was told the “Word of God” said. There are a lot of hurting people in our world who have questions about their gender, sexual orientation, their natural desires, and if they can belong in the family of God. As a spirit-filled follower of Jesus, I have come to definitively understand that God loves and accepts gay people exactly the way they are, with no caveats or conditions. He was the first affirming voice in my life who accepted me. So I’ve chosen to share my story to advocate for the LGBTQ+ community and speak against the toxic theology the church uses to harm our queer family. I hope my story encourages, challenges, and inspires you to honestly consider what love actually is in the world and liberates you from suffocating theology that harms human life and violates the nature of God.

She coaches and equips women all over the world in dating, relationships, singleness, sexuality, faith and how to build a renewed and healthy biblical sexual ethic rooted in freedom, truth and grace as opposed to the oh-so-common shame and fear narratives so many experienced growing up in evangelical culture. Kat loves God, personal development, a good Beyoncé dance party, + is a Ranch dressing connoisseur. She believes in the power of story, that done is better than perfect, quality triumphs quantity, and that the journey truly is the destination. Ultimately, her vision is for women to know their beauty, identity, worth and value and to experience untapped freedom and joy in their lives regardless of their relationship status.

One day my little sister was hanging out at my place and she said to me (talking about my facial hair), “dude, you gotta clean that up.” And I thought, yeah, she’s right. Completely forgetting my conversation with Seth a few weeks prior to this, I went into the bathroom and shaved the bottom half of the goatee but left the mustache. So I went out and showed her and my roommate at the time, Micah, but then went back into the bathroom and curled up the sides to see what would happen. And THE CURLS STAYED. I was shocked. So I went out to dinner with my sister with this mustache and I was loving it. And since that day, I’ve never put wax in my mustache. I found that all I’ve needed to do to keep this handlebar thing going on is curl the ends with my fingers and it holds its shape!

Some time went by after doing video announcements, and my identity changed in our environment. It’s like people didn’t know I had a name anymore and just called me “Bethel Man.” They’d see me at Trader Joe’s, the gas station or movie theatre and say, “Hey, are you Bethel Man?” And it was so surprising to me because I wasn’t expecting to be noticed like this AT ALL. I also had my mustache while all this was happening, so I started becoming very distinct in my appearance. I became 'the guy.'

I learned at a young age that Jesus commanded us to make disciples so that they can go disciple nations. When I was growing up, however, I was constantly wondering where the rabbis and mentors were around me, and I was eager to find them. This discipleship piece was in the Bible but I wasn’t seeing it in my life.
Be searching for it and know what you want. Get around people who have things you want to receive from that will lead you to opportunities. Participate and make your requests known with actions and with how you spent your time.
There are Rabbis for you. The Lord has designed this for you. Give yourself permission to be hopeful and find them.

I don’t want to be the only one influencing the environment. If I can’t replace myself, I’m not doing a good job. I want to be able to duplicate myself and not just be “the guy,” I want to teach others to do this too.
Without something to contribute and to own, people’s value and understanding of their role in the world in their space tends to diminish and, when they don’t feel super connected or committed to something, they tend to drop off and become susceptible to other things that steal from what they could have if they had skin in the game. So I actually don’t like having anybody on my team who doesn’t have any skin in the game and it feels like they’re set up for failure and it’s also stealing from other people in the environment.

In this episode, I talk about why I started this podcast and where this journey began!
I have an intimate relationship with the nature of Truth Himself and He moves me, we negotiate things and He’s always right. Obviously there’s an exchange here; there’s a place where I get to willingly and triumphantly lay down things that I thought had value when He shows me something better. He reveals to me the depth of what’s actually going on and I recognize and pay tribute to the fact that He’s right, authoritative and worthy of my trust. So as that continues to unfold and expand, I hope that I continue to change. Not to not be myself, but to express more of who I have always been. And I hope that’s true for all of us.
Welcome. Let's be changed.
