Welcome to Create Shift, where we have conversations to encourage and inspire positive change. Hosted by Ellen Carr and Kate Banks, together we run The Good Space a place for alternative learning and radical wellbeing. If you’re ready to rip up the rules and create a life in which you can thrive, then this is the podcast for you.
Hello!
It’s another interview episode of the Create Shift podcast. This time with a coach I’ve been working with since 2020, the wonderful Ray Dodd. In this episode we talk all things money making and creativity. We also manage to discuss Lin Manuel Miranda (why not?!), the spreadsheet olympics (because apparently that’s a real thing) and Ray wins the prize for first use of the phrase ‘raw dogging’ on the podcast.
Get your notebook out, there’s plenty of juicy stuff in this conversation!
Topics covered:
Ray’s approach to money goals, why you need to go for more than enough
The most common money challenges Ray sees amongst her clients who are artists/creatives
The need to realise you’re a business owner as an artist/creative
Being your real self in your art & your money making
Not judging your own path
Developing your own relationship with money
Artists need coaching more than anybody (and if you want it with me, here’s the info)
How society has shaped our relationship to money & to creativity

Hello!
On today’s episode of Create Shift I’m telling you the bizarre story of how I got the best creative advice I ever received, how I didn’t even realise that’s what it was for years (because honestly it kinda pissed me off) and I’m letting you know what that advice was.

Welcome to another episode of Create Shift. In today’s solo episode I’m diving into the topic of procrastination. Is it a helpful part of the creative processes, a block to be battled through and overcome or perhaps neither of those? If you feel like procrastination is something you’ve come up against many times, this episode will offer you a fresh perspective on it and some tools for how to move through it.

My Alchemy single session coaching package is now on Summer sale! More than 50% off. All the info is here on this PDF (because I’m too excited to share this to wait for it to be on my website looking fancy). This really is an incredible offer and there are just 10 spots available.
This episode references theories on self-doubt and self-belief developed by master coach Sas Petherick, informed by her own research. I’m diving deep into this learning on Sas’ Self Belief Coaching Academy certification training.
That’s all for today.
Until next time!

It’s time for another episode of the Create Shift podcast!
I hope you enjoy listening to this conversation with my guest Kimberly Kuniko (aka Lacelit). This is a beautiful conversation filled with magic all about creativity, the ‘rules’ around it and our mutual desire to abandon them. If you’re in a place where you feel your artistic identity is shifting, where you’re questioning if you’re allowed to do something - if you have the ‘right’ experience - this conversation will be like a magic balm for you.
Kimberly Kuniko (she/her) is a mixed-race Nikkei American illustrator, collage + mixed media artist, and poet based in what is now known as Los Angeles, California (unceded Tongva land). Her Japanese roots inform her art through a love of paper, finding the connection between things, balancing delicate detail and texture, and layering stories together. She enjoys designing for her stationery brand Lacelit, hosting guided retreats for creatives of all mediums, and facilitating the Dream & Scheme Community for Small Business Owners. Find her creations and community spaces online in these cozy spaces:

Topics discussed
Kimberly’s own winding creative journey from performing arts to visual arts
‘Expert’ status and questioning our right to do things as self-taught artists
Challenging the arbitrary rules of who can and can’t access creativity
How following curiosity is such a big part of creativity
There is no one route to creativity
The value of not knowing the ‘rules’, not being an ‘expert’
Quotes
“I find I make the most interesting things when I’m taking those restraints away”
“part of the expression is the sharing of it”
“there’s no wrong time to start”
“when you are a creative person and you have ideas, any kind of different stumuli or ideas can give you more inspiration”
“a creative life is one that is open to experimentation and play”

Welcome back to the Create Shift podcast. It’s been a little while since I released a new episode, and even longer since I did an interview. I’m so excited to share today’s interview episode with writer Tutku Barbaros.
Tutku is a writer – across forms – of Turkish Cypriot heritage from south-east London. She is an alumna of the Royal Court Writers' Programme as well as Sphinx Theatre's year-long writer's development programme, Sphinx 30. Her play debut Layla and Youssef was longlisted for the Bruntwood prize and the Paines Plough Women's Prize For Playwriting. "All The Women She Knows" is her debut book. Tutku also leads creative writing workshops designed to playfully and joyfully help adults unlock their imagination in relaxed settings.

Success, finding your own definition of it & how it’s “not about what success looks like, it’s about what it feels like”
Writing trauma
Tuts’ process of writing All the Women She Knows, and how she allowed herself to slow down and enjoy the journey of it - “allowing myself to just sit in the world and go slowly”
Burnout, Tuts’ experience with this in 2019 and how the pandemic was a time for her to re-assess and re-connect with writing
How there’s a need for a radical overhaul in the theatre industry

It’s so easy to get caught in the ‘new year new you’ energy that society pushes on us. Easy to feel full of ‘shoulds’ and bad about not having started all the things yet.
Here’s my alternative to all of that. A reminder that January is not nature’s new year, and it’s okay to (good, even) to take things slow.

In this episode of Create Shift I’m talking about the ‘other’ in our creative processes. Asking, who are we making our art for? When is this ‘other’ actually useful to think of, and when isn’t it? Often I find we can get caught up in thinking about this ‘other’ and it can become detrimental to our practice. Today I’m offering a few different ways to think about this, which may be helpful to explore.

This episode is all about money and the myths and beliefs we hold onto around creatives and artists making money, asking for more money, doing well financially. It’s a bit of a rant as I feel really passionate about this.
Also a note to clarify, I reference actors, directors and writers in film and TV being really well paid. The way I say it makes it sound like I think all of those people are well paid. What I meant is that there are some who are very highly paid. I just wanted to clarify that, as it felt important amidst all the strikes going on at the moment.
At the end I mention my 1:1 coaching offer - save £300 on your coaching package when you book your curiosity call by Friday 8th September. My prices are rising from £1500 to £1800 on 9th September, but book your call by the 8th and you’ll get the current pricing.

In this episode we’re talking about the number one thing to do if you want to be more productive. This may surprise you, and it certainly isn’t one of the productivity hacks or tips that are so often shared. What we’re talking about here is trust. We discuss how self-trust, and trust of those you work with is SO important and how not having trust can really undermine what we’re able to achieve. Whilst we aren’t on board the hustle culture train or placing productivity above all else, we are on board with making being productive when we need to be more easeful.

In this episode of Create Shift we’re discussing how important it is to acknowledge that as humans, we can’t be expected to be the same each day. It’s much better to practice meeting ourselves as we are each day, and this can help our interactions with other people too. We discuss how doing this can support us in our working days, and in our management of others if this is something we do.

In today’s episode we discuss the notion of being in control, and the paradox that what’s helpful is working on controlling what you can control (usually yourself) and remembering that you can’t control anything else. We talk about how creating a sense of being in control of some things can be supportive for our nervous systems, and create a sense of resilience. We also chat about ways we practice identifying what we can and can’t control.

What would it be like to live a life you didn't needa holiday from? How would that feel? And how does the thought of that make you feel? This is what we're discussing in today's episode of the podcast. It's a powerful and provocative question that can get us really thinking about the way we live, the way we want to live and changes we might want to start making.

Today we're talking about ambition. A really important, and often sticky, topic when it comes to burnout recovery and moving out of the cycle of burnout. Inspired by what Jamie Varon writes in her book about no longer allowing her ambition to be bigger than her wellbeing, we're talking about letting go of ambitions when they're harmful to your wellbeing. It's a bit of a different way to look at ambition, and hopefully it's an inspiring one.

In this solo episode Ellen shares a recent learning she had about following a path that wasn't hers. She shares how, when we let go of the achievements we're measuring ourselves against and embrace our own paths, the weight of perceived failure can fall away. She also shares about a current special offer we're running on our coaching packages. You can get a half day of voxer or 75 minutes on zoom with us for just £97 (usually £175). You have to book your space by the end of May to use the offer, and to book just email us on hello@thegood-space.com.

In a world where we're constantly told to strive for more, bigger, better we think it's vital to slow down & to ask ourselves "is that ambition actually mine?" In this episode Ellen shares a powerful quote she recently stumbled across that encouraged her to reflect on ambition, everyday magic & the importance of making sure our ambitions are actually ones that feel amazing to us.

If you feel like the way our society views productivity is messed up and needs to change, this is the episode for you! How would life be different if we allowed ourselves to put the good things first? If we oriented it towards our pleasure? This is what we discuss in this podcast episode, as well as why this feels so hard to do (because it's radical and counter-cultural).

We took a week off the podcast so we could prioritise our time working on something new that had come up. In this episode we share what that is, and how we realised that we'd not been in alignment with ourselves when we first put together our collaborative coaching package! We talk about how it feels to not be in alignment, and how different the energy can feel when you shift to acting in a way that IS in alignment with yourself.
We talk about some big shifts we've made to our collaborative coaching offering, and you can read all about this/play our mini adventure to find out more! Play the Collaborative Coaching Adventure here

This really gets to the heart of our work, and how we want to support you to live your lives. We hope you find this episode supportive, inspiring, powerful and maybe even challenging.

We talk a bit about the ego in Yoga philosophy, and offer some ideas for ways to begin developing awareness around how it's showing up in your own life.

In this episode we discuss values. Such a hot topic and a bit of a buzzword in the online coaching/personal development space. Kate shares some of the issues and sticking points she’s personally found with this idea of identifying a core set of values and living by them forever, and through this we explore some of the problems with this idea of values and what an alternative way of looking at it might be.

This podcast is the first in a 4 part mini-series, inspired by our course Work Magic. Over the next 4 episodes, we aim to give you an insight into the course and provide you with practical tools, inspiration and support to begin changing your relationship with work to one that is joyful and nourishing for you.
To begin, we crack open the belief that you need to be consistent to be successful. We chat about our experiences of this belief in our working lives so far, the impact it has, and how we can start to challenge and change the narrative. We share the changes we’ve made so far to embrace a more human, imperfect and messy approach to our working lives.

Welcome back to the Create Shift podcast! We catch up on how we are feeling going into this new year, how we are looking after ourselves in this transitional phase, and what we have planned for The Good Space over the next few months.
P.S. Ellen asked whether bears are still hibernating…it looks like the answer is, it depends! “No one bear behaves like another, just as each winter is different.” Seems like we’re not too different from bears after all!

In this episode of Create Shift I talk to Misty Sansom, a life purpose coach all the way from New Zealand! Misty is a writer and life purpose coach who helps people to figure out exactly what they’re meant to do in life and how to make it happen.
Her work has been featured on the Huffington Post, the Daily Guru and MindBodyGreen, and she teaches people how to find their purpose and bring it to life through her ebook, monthly membership and 1:1 coaching.
We get deep into the topic of finding your life purpose, words that perhaps are heard a lot within the wellness and personal development space but often lack solidity. Misty's work is brilliant as she takes the concept and makes it very tangible, practical and actionable. In this episode she shares steps you can take and exercises to do to start uncovering your life purpose, and how to live it.
I hope you enjoy this conversation, and find it supportive.

I also find her Instagram a refreshing breath of fresh air, and a delight to engage with. So, I hope you enjoy this conversation with Sarah as much as I did and that it offers you some support, encouragement and inspiration on your own journey.

"I believe in slow, soulful living"
I really hope you enjoy our conversation and that it supports you in whatever way you need.

In this final episode of season 6 of Create Shift I talk about how it's up to us to give ourselves permission to do what we want. I share my experience of wanting to create my own dosha quiz and feeling like I couldn't because I didn't have the relevant qualifications/experience (despite, in reality, having both). I discuss how the universe is singing with our dreams and desires (no matter how big or small they are), and explore how and why we prevent ourselves from pursuing these. I share an exercise from coach Tara Mohr on reframing these things we tell ourselves, and offer encouragement and inspiration for moving forwards with your dreams.

Oh hello! Welcome to another solo episode of Create Shift. Continuing on with the theme of routines I've been focusing on lately, in this episode I talk specifically about morning and evening routines. This short episode follows on nicely from s6,ep4 where I talk about using Ayurveda to schedule your day as in this episode I discuss the dominant doshas in the evening. As I mention in S6,ep3 on the Importance of Routine in Challenging Times I think I'm talking about routine so much at the moment because it's something we can have some control over.
But if you're reading this and starting to feel bad because you have zero routine right now, please don't worry! The need for our routines to be flexible is a big thing I talk about in this episode, and a really key thing we need to remember. Our routines need to be part of our self-care, not a way we beat up on ourselves. So, I hope you find this short episode inspiring and supportive.
Thanks for listening,
Ellen x

I was thrilled to interview Sara Tasker of Me&Orla for season 6 of the podcast. Sara has been a sort of mentor to me with my business, although we've never met. Reading about Sara's journey as a female entrepreneur establishing her business, then falling down a rabbit hole reading her blogs, opened my eyes to the possibility of being able to run the sort of business I wanted to create online. Something soft, supportive, nourishing and that would support me to lead the kind of life I wanted to lead- something very different to what we're so often told business is or should be. This is the kind of business Sara has created, and it's run in what I would call a feminine way. This is, along with how the Internet has created so many possibilities for female entrepreneurs, is what Sara and I discuss in this episode.
To be clear, the way I'm defining feminine and masculine here is not the way we tend to in the West. It's more in line with Eastern philosophies, and the philosophy of Yoga. Feminine and masculine are viewed as energetic qualities, similar to the yin and yang, that both exist within each of us. You don't need to be female to work in a feminine way and vice-versa. It's important to understand this distinction before diving into the episode.
As always, thank you for being here and I hope you enjoy listening to Create Shift S6,ep5 with the lovely Sara Tasker.

Hello! Create Shift S6,ep4 is another short solo episode and something of a follow on from last episode 3 where I spoke about creating a daily routine. In this episode I talk about how we can use the wisdom of Ayurveda to help ourselves schedule our days and boost productivity. It's a pretty practical episode, that I hope offers a simple way to start brining Ayurvedic holistic living into your everyday. In it I share the times of day when each dosha - Vata, Pitta and Kapha - is most dominant and the best types of activity to do and avoid during those times to naturally boost your productivity. If you experiment with any of the suggestions in this episode I'd love to know how you get on!

In Create Shift S6,ep2 I chat with Sarah Major, Clinic Director at the International College of Oriental Medicine. I first met Sarah when she presented a guest lecture on the Yoga, Ayurveda and Holistic Health course I took 2019 - 2020. I filled my pages with scribbled notes, diagrams and representations of my brain exploding with the information it was receiving. I knew I had to have Sarah come onto the podcast to share the fascinating philosophy of acupuncture, and talk about how we could all use aspects of Traditional Chinese Medicine to support our health and wellbeing.
I hope you enjoy listening to this fascinating discussion. You can find Sarah online at saramajoracupuncture.com and if you're interested in studying acupuncture you can find out more at https://orientalmed.ac.uk/.

Welcome to Create Shift podcast season 6 ep1, a deep dive into the immune system from a holistic perspective with guest Emma Newlyn. As I write this it's Wednesday on week two of lockdown in the UK. We find ourselves navigating entirely uncharted waters. Our lives, work and entire worlds are changing. It's challenging and scary to say the least. And yet there is - I think - some hope to be found in all of this. The systems we've known for so long are crumbling, and with that comes the chance for different and perhaps better systems to be built in their place. I hope that holistic living and the things we talk about on this podcast may play more of a role in this new world.
Perhaps this season of the podcast can support you to gently ask questions of what kind of life you'd like to return to, and encourage you to find the ways you can best support yourself and those around you right now. In today's episode returning guest Emma Newlyn and I talk about the immune system and offer practical suggestions for ways we can all support our immunity.

Recently I asked myself the question "who am I if I'm not my work?" And I realised I didn't really know the answer. My work has defined me for so long, and I hadn't even realised it until now. So this solo episode is me discussing my thoughts on this. Sharing how I've been thinking about this question of identity, and approaching it from a yogic perspective too. In a society that's very driven by success and achievements, and our first question when meeting new people is often "what do you do?" I think it's super important to loosen the grip our work has on our identity.
I hope you enjoy the episode, it's another one recorded out on a walk and so as always you're invited to join me on a walk as you listen. If you did enjoy don't forget to share the episode with anyone else you know who may enjoy it.
Thanks for listening as always, Ellen x

In this solo episode I discuss success, and how we need to define what a successful life is for us. Society tells us so much about what a successful life should look like, and for most of us it just isn't what we truly want. We can spend years striving for a definition of success that isn't truly ours, and feeling like a failure in the process. This isn't good for our health or happiness, and so it's time to take a pause and reflect on what a successful life looks and feels like for you.

I loved this chat with Marie Kenny, a creative coach who works to help artists and creatives manifest their highest creative potential. In a world where we often hear that creativity is a worthless, time-wasting endeavour speaking to Marie is a deep lungful of fresh air. If you feel you aren't expressing your creative self (and, spoiler, we are all creative) then I hope listening to Marie will inspire you to get expressing. So, get yourself a cup of your favourite tea or take yourself on a walk and enjoy this conversation.

In the final episode of Create Shift season 4 I talk with yoga teacher and mind and body coach Estelle Nyabuhinja of Pop Up Yoga Milano. I met Estelle when we both took Laurel Beversdorf's Yoga with Resistance Bands Teacher Training at Hot Yoga Dublin in May 2019. In this conversation Estelle shares the same curiosity, inquisitiveness about movement practice and insightful views on what holistic living is that made me want to have her on the podcast. We discuss how our movement changes instinctively with the seasons and Estelle shares how she took the Summer off this year (in true European style) and the benefits this has had on her mind, wellbeing and teaching practice. Estelle discusses the work she does, and beautifully describes a yoga event she did a museum in Milan. This event was so much more than just yoga and to me truly embodies what holistic living is all about.
Thank you for listening to season 4 of Create Shift, I hope you've found it inspiring, supportive and perhaps even challenging too. A brand new season is coming your way in January 2020.

Food waste is a huge problem within the Western world with over one third of all food produced globally going to waste. Open Kitchen MCR is a social enterprise here in Manchester working to do their bit to help combat this issue. In Create Shift S4,ep5 I chat with Steph Lynch-Ozamar who is the Communications and Campaigns Manager for Open Kitchen MCR. We chat about the work they do and how they do it and I learn what gleaning is and how many millions (!) of bananas go to waste t a household level every day. If you listened to my solo episode on What is Holistic Living you'll know I'm really passionate about holistic living being more than aromatherapy, candles and yoga asana. To me holistic living has a lot to do with being connected to others and the world around us, and doing what we can to make that a better place. So, it's important to me that we learn about organisations such as Open Kitchen MCR and support them if and how we can. I hope you enjoy the episode.

In Create Shift S4,ep4 I chat with menstruality coach and educator Lisa de Jong. We talk about periods, yes, and Lisa offers great practical tips for women. But we also talk about one of my favourite topics of all cyclical or non-linear living. We discuss masculine and feminine energies, and the need for more compassion for ourselves and others in the world. Lisa teaches me about some Celtic spirituality and symbolism, and she leaves me with an incredibly intriguing statement.
I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed recording!

I wanted to bring Laurel on the podcast as I think she's a really interesting voice on yoga, movement and the roles they play in our lives. We talk about yoga, movement, exercise and how the roles that these play in our lives especially in Western individualistic society. This is a great listen for anybody, but also for anyone working within movement (not just yoga teachers). I hope that, in listening to this episode, your curiosity will be raised and you'll have lots of questions spinning around in your mind.

Create Shift S4,ep2 is another solo episode. In this episode I answer the question 'what is holistic living?'. I share what holistic living means to me and how I work with the concept as a holistic living mentor. I talk about how, to me, holistic living goes much wider than candles, aromatherapy and yoga and how it is both political and counter cultural. I hope you enjoy this episode, and that it gets you thinking about what holistic living means to you.

Welcome to Create Shift season3 or, the Summer season. This season is different to those that have come before in that there's only one episode. Yup, this is it for the Summer season of Create Shift. Why? Well, I explain in the episode but in a nutshell it's because it's Summer. And, to me, Summer is about creating space in my life so that I can frolic outside more (ie be behind a computer less). So, enjoy this episode which is me riffing on Summer seasonal living and sharing some Ayurvedic wisdom on the subject.
I will see you (be in your ears?) in the Autumn.
Happy Summer!

Rachel Noble runs the Noble Apothecary, a holistic skincare brand based from her home apothecary here in Manchester. This is the final episode of Create Shift season 2, and what a wonderful interview to end it on. Rachel and I discuss her journey from beauty blogger to lover of skincare simplicity and creating the Noble Apothecary. But really this is a holistic conversation, about how what we choose to put on our bodies and a simple skincare routine is one piece of the whole of holistic living. I loved chatting to Rachel, she's so generous with what she shares and is extremely honest and open. I hope that you'll enjoy listening to this conversation as much as I enjoyed recording it.
Thank you so much for supporting Create Shift season 2, it really does mean so much to me to know that people are listening to - and finding benefit from - the show. Charlotte talks about her journey from 'normal job' to being self-employed, and how this shift has helped her to live a life more aligned with her values. We discuss the impacts a standard office environment can have on our health and wellbeing, and why we feel this needs to change. Charlotte shares her story of how yoga has played a huge role in supporting her to live and work more intuitively, and create some self-care rituals. This episode is a great listen for anyone who's interested in connecting more to their intuition in their work and life, and creating some routines to support their wellbeing.

In Create Shift S2,ep5 I chat to Josephine Brooks, a planning and productivity mentor for side-hustlers on a mission to reframe how productivity is seen. I was interested to have Josephine on the show to chat about productivity and the term side-hustling. I've never really liked the phrase, and I was interested to hear how Josephine views hustling and slow, holistic living to be able to sit side by side. We have an open and honest discussion about our own struggles with the term, with running businesses on the side whilst trying to make time for ourselves and self-care practice too. What Josephine presents is, in my opinion, a more feminine way of working that I'm fully on board with. One that's about doing less, getting more done and nurturing ourselves as we do it.

In Create Shift S2,ep4 I chat with professional rebel Marie-Claire Ashcroft. I knew when I met Marie-Claire that I had to have her on the show. She's full of vitality, and is a person living life on her own terms regardless of what others say. That, of course, isn't easy to do and in this conversation Marie-Claire shares her journey to getting to living a life true to her she is and the challenges she faced, and still faces now. I find Marie-Claire hugely inspiring when it comes to living my most purposeful life, and I hope you find her inspiring too.

I was so excited to have Gentle Nutrition and Lifestyle Coach Rose White chat to me for the podcast as I've long been an admirer of her no-nonsense nutrition talk (along with hilarious general life chats) on Instagram stories. When it comes to food and nutrition Rose really knows her stuff. She puts it in an easy to understand way - not dumbed down but super clear and accessible - and relates it to our actual lives. In Create Shift S2,Ep2 Rose and I chat a lot about intuitive eating and what Rose's four pillars of health. I learned a lot from this chat, especially about sugar - listen to me get totally surprised near the end of our conversation about that. I hope you find this episode both informative and supportive, wherever you are on your nutrition journey.

Over the past couple of years as I've gradually made many changes to my life, I've been exploring seasonal living and what it really means to live in line with the seasons. This episode is an informal chat, where I talk through my thinking on Winter seasonal living and things that I've found useful to consider and do. My take on seasonal living is largely informed by Ayurveda, the sister science of yoga, and is a holistic approach. By this I mean it takes into consideration all aspects of our lives when thinking about how to live seasonally. I'm fully aware that our society in the West is not set up to support a life in synch with the rhythms of the seasons, but I do believe there are changes all of us can make to tune into a more seasonal way of being. It is my hope that this episode will help inspire you to lean into the rhythms of Winter in your own life.

Those are just some of the questions I explore with Lucy Lucraft as we discuss zero waste and plastic free living. Lucy talks about her zero waste journey and shares some great practical tips and advice. I particularly love the balance in this conversation between idealism and acknowledging how overwhelming the zero waste journey can be, and that not everybody is starting from the same place.
