This podcast discusses science fiction at all levels, from Stargate and Star Wars to H.P. Lovecraft, ancient cultures, and modern myth.
Wouldn't it be great to be able to prove or disprove any and all extraterrestrial conspiracy theories? Just to KNOW for certain whats real and what isn't?
We have had a lot of major disappointments lately. But we dont have to let them color the taste of what we all collectively enjoy as a fanbase!
Breaking news everyone! Reading.....is HARD sometimes! Even for a voracious reader like myself, reading can seem like a chore some days. But why is this? If I'm reading a genre that I love so much, how can that be?
Deadpool x Wolverine is EASILY one of my favorite marvel movies of all time! if not one of my favorite movies in general. We have seen a pretty big dip in the attention people are giving to the MCU, but THIS movie is guaranteed to swing it back. So what made the studio make such a dramatically different kind of movie that was ten time raunchier, more gory, more nostalgia filled than the previous Deadpool movies? Well......
Following Dune Part 1, this movie gave us a ton of payoff from the buildup that we got several years ago and it did NOT disappoint! As a matter of fact, I think its pretty underrated. I do not see many people talking about it very much. But I will!
I think everyone is getting real tired of studios doing whatever they want with their properties because they KNOW that no matter how bad something bombs, they can keep on truckin....
Did Obi-Wan Kenobi commit heinous crimes by removing the autonomy of the Stormtroopers with his famous "these arent the droids you're looking for" line? Does this open the Jedi order to a whole slew of class action lawsuits?
I am a HUGE X-Men comics fan, especially the later graphic novel adaptations and illustrated compendiums. So I was a little apprehensive whenever Disney Plus announced its continuation of the beloved X-Men cartoon we got in the 90s.......I was not ready for them to screw up my childhood even more. BUT THEY DIDNT!!!!
I got the chance to hang out with Nathan Helm, author of the first in what will be an epic fantasy SAGA sure to sweep the bookshelves! This book was packed full of fun and its definitely reflected by the cool dude that is its author.
Its no secret that Star Wars is a massive franchise that is near and dear to not only me but to tens of thousands, including my pal Matt Charles! Today he is advocating the position that the prequel trilogy is superior to the original trilogy......and I'm here to put a stop to that.
With all the really cool technologies and advancements of differing flavors that we get in various scifi franchises, do we really need big chonk muscles and kickass karate skills?
There is massive speculation that the Emperor of Mankind will be, if not already is, the next chaos god. Though it may be more apt to call him a god of order rather than chaos.
I had the opportunity to have a good long talk the author of Becoming Glitch, and it was nothing but fun. Heres waiting for the sequel to a book everyone should be reading! I know Daniel and I will be chatting it up whenever it comes out.
Ever make a decision and then rethink that decision? And then rethink that rethink? AND THEN throw the whole idea away and juggle chainsaws? Well, thats the Chaos God of Change for you. The focus on magics and sorcery is pretty fun though!
Ever thought about having that extra slice of cake? Spending all your paycheck on nothing but art decor and photography software? How about popping just one more xanax? Well great job! You have just invited the Prince of Pleasure to make her way over to tempt you into selling your soul for the BEST and most gratifying experiences you could ever want!
Ever hock a loogie that was super big and chunky and looked like if it was any bigger it would be walkin and talkin and ordering room service? WELL! Thats good ole Papa Nurgle if he wasnt a behemoth of a monstrous god of disease and rot.
Blood for the blood god, skulls for the skull throne of Khorne! WH40K has tons of dark gods littering its cosmic landscape and my favorite is easily the lord of rage and battle, Khorne!
I talk about zombies a lot but one of the classic era of movie monsters that I think gets over looked all the time are mummies! But whats the difference?
Today I'm joined by the author of To the Brink, Matt Charles to discuss his writing style, his book, and a bit of shared nerd perspectives!
We've had the Bad Batch series finale, the Tales of the Empire anthology episodes, trailers for the Acolyte and an interesting May the 4th promo video drop. IS it all still a dumpster fire?.......yeah
A friend of mine, Paul Avery Tindol, came out with a great scifi thriller! Hunting Snipe: and Other Notes on the East Texas Cattle Mutilations. I had the great pleasure of reading it before our chat and MAN I cannot recommend it enough! Paul and I actually studied theatre together at SFA, so its REALLY cool for me to see a colleague of mine create something as enthralling as this book!
There were a ton of interesting things going on that I wanted to talk about, so I summed them all up and did one episode instead of a bunch of smaller ones!
The latest hit show courtesy of Amazon Prime is out and wild: Fallout! If you havent carved out a few hours to burn through it like the radiation that permeates the wastelands of post apocalyptic America in the series, you definitely need to do so! Though I think the success of the show could potentially lead to something else......
I got to sit down and talk to a great friend of the show, author and voice over artist, Aaron Ryan, about his new book Dissonance Volume II: The Reckoning! Head on over to Amazon and pick it up, it is an absolute GREAT read!
We all have some natural fear of the dark. But why? Why are embodiments of fear and darkness so compelling as characters in our stories? Can we overcome them? How?
There have been all manner of creatures in science fiction, fantasy, historical fiction, anime, graphic novels, and cereal box one offs, but I cannot find ANY examples of a being that is completely made out of sound waves.
ONE! SINGULAR SENSATION!!!..........Skipping down our evolutionary timeline, we can imagine pretty easily that the next drastic environmental change will be that our planet will have to contend with is: nuclear fallout. But how will human beings adapt?
Dealing with another foundational cornerstone in the bedrock of science fiction and its tropes, religion plays a HUGE part in whatever story it appears.
Okay so this show NEEDS TO BE a success or the franchise will be demolished, the fans will be lost, no one will care about Mando season 4 or the movie, people are already turned off about the Rey movie, everything is going to be absolutely WRECKED........so lets talk about it.
I really want this story/movie/show to happen. But I would also be SCARRED of it happening because I would not want it being screwed up to an utter oblivion like how so many beloved franchises and projects have been massacred recently.
Its easy to relate to a stories main characters, side characters, even the villains. But what about what we CANT relate to? Where are all the stories about the eldritch and mysterious? Lets have more of THAT!
We need to explore it, point blank period. We know frighteningly little about the ocean floor, the creatures that are able to live down there, the dinosaurs that survived the meteors and following ice ages wiping out their land based counter parts. And I REALLY want us discovering all the sunken cities and ships that are down there!
Messing with time is fun, especially when you write a story it or a DND character that does it. Its a fun thing to play around with because theres almost nothing concretely known about what goes into time travel or time manipulation. I would definitely choose it as my ultimate power, being able to bend the tempest of time to my will.
Have you heard of one of the WORST live action, straight to garbage can tv shows of all time? Well you have now! Halo is by far one of the most depressing things I have ever seen and by all things holy please dont watch it. Let me suffer FOR you, thats what Im here for!
Today I sat down for a great chat with voice over artist, singer and author Aaron Ryan to talk about his new book, Dissonance, as well as a smattering of nerdling quandaries and quibbles. Aaron is a really fun and easily relatable guy, the conversation went by way too quickly and his new book is reflective of a man as articulate that spares no detail, like his clear inspiration J.R.R. Tolkien.
Do you wonder what it would take for humans first settlers out in space to make it out there in the cold, unrelenting void? WELL I DO! ALOT!
Do YOU have a shopping addiction? Always find yourself wanting more? Can never seem satisfied enough? Well come on down to the endless maw of the Abyssal Store! You will be able to purchase so many products, you will BECOME the product itself!
Have you ever wondered what [REDACTED] while he was drinking and mad at the [CLASSIFIED] all of creation? Do [REMOVED BY ORDER OF THE 0-5 COUNCIL] at night screaming for someone [REDACTED] help and they just wont [REDACTED]? Take a dive into the SCP Foundation and [REMOVED TO PRESERVE SANITY]!
We get a ton of cool, seemingly unstoppable future weapons and space guns. But do we not get enough of? Thats right. ARMOR. Strong suits of space metals that can stop space bullets!
Is the real world better than what we could create for ourselves in the matrix we all know is coming? Let's skip over what "real" means for this episode and focus on what we really want out of our evolutionary path forward while using apparati like the virtual world of the matrix.
There is an impending doom hanging over all of us: the apocalypse. Its just a matter of what form it will take. My money is on nukes. How will we best survive it though?
Getting kind of bored or uninterested whenever a show or movie unveils that it has a multiverse? I know I am and I think I'm very much not alone.
Ever wonder what our first foray amongst the civilizations of the stars might be? Im convinced a good amount of us will try to eat and or copulate with whatever alien race first visits us openly.
You know those guys that pop up in a show or movie that makes you point at the screen and say "oh hey, its that guy!" but don't really remember who they are? Well, lets go over a few of them. From one off bit roles to reoccurring characters, the actors that fill those rolls are some of the most memorable ever!
A really big scifi trope, as big as clones or intelligent robots, body snatching has been steadily ingrained in classic scifi mythos and has been used in almost every long running scifi show I can think of! From Stargate SG-1 to Falling Skies, people being replaced by robots, puppets, aliens, clones, has become a BIG component that has been utilized to a great extent by the genre.
Who are you? Not who have you become, what you do because of someone or something else, but who are you in your metaphorical bones? Strip away all of the bits of us that are there due to external influences and why we do certain things, act in specific ways, like or dislike this that or the other, all of that is not US. Those bits are accessories. add ons, patch work. Didn't know your psyche was Frankensteins monster, did you?
One of the definitive eras in Star Wars is the Clone Wars that helped shape the galaxy into what we know in the original trilogy. Its a war thats fought between two major scifi tropes; clones vs robots. But can that happen in real life?
Do you ever come across something you think is entirely unbelievable? Then you do a quick Google search and find out.......its real. And terrifying.
Are there notable trends and commonalities among the best and most successful science fiction shows and movies? What draws the audience to the theaters, to get that subscription, to turn on the tv channel? Can we mark out what those signifiers are?
There are a decent handful of projects slated for release this year. We can speculate on how well they will perform based on the quality of the past. So lets do that!
Speciating from homosapiens, what we are now as the human race, which should or would we speciate into? Mechanoid individuals known as cyborgs or genetically bolstered people called homosuperior.
Lets dive into Zach Snyders latest stinker, Rebel Moon. Does it have an redeeming qualities?........does it???
The Empire of the Hand, the Eriadu Authority, and the Zero Command are all cool, minor factions of the Warlord Era that ultimately were all absorbed into the Imperial Remnant. It is interesting that none of the factions are outright DESTROYED, they all get reincorporated in one form or another into a reforged, reinvigorated military power.
One of the New Republic's greatest opponents of the era, Warlord Zsinj was a classic, mustache twirling villain. His war of espionage, economic and biowarfare, and terrorism against the New Republic all made him and his Empire a chief obstacle that desperately needed to be overcome.
The largest faction to emerge from the splintering of the First Galactic Empire and arguably THE most important faction of all the old Star Wars expanded universe, the Imperial Remnant was GREAT!
One of the less significant, but still integral factions of the old expanded universe, the Greater Maldrood (aside from having such a silly name) was still a major player in the Warlord Era for two central reasons: they had a massive amount of territory with an important trade route and they had Gilad Pellaeon as their military commander.
For years after the death of Vader and the defeat of Sidious at Endor, the galaxy was steeped in a free for all, all out brawl between not only the Rebellion and what remained of the Empire, but a now fractured Empire and its own warring factions that sought to dominate each other. The Pentastar Alignment is one such Imperial faction.
Suffice to say, Disney has made some terrible decisions lately, with great confidence, landing them in some hot water: their over priced star wars hotel, having to merge Hulu with Disney Plus, their park ticket price hikes. And the bad decision making has bled into Star Wars and Marvel as well, unfortunately.
If you're around my age, you probably grew up with a straight to VHS Disney movie called Treasure Planet and WOW was it one of the most slept on Disney movies of all time!
There are untold numbers of world wide mysteries scattered amongst history and folklore. One that I have perused as of late, is the lore and origins of the famed Leprechaun from Irish folklore. And in doing so.... may have discovered a possible origin?
There are dozens upon dozens of great science fiction shows and movies to get into if you are looking to try out the genre. But where should you start?
It's here! The next season in one of the most fun and enthralling pieces of Star Wars we have had in years. Also, be sure to check out this episodes sponsor, RT Book Reviews! www.rtbookreviews.com
I am an enormous fan of the work given to the annals of time by Howard Phillips Lovecraft and his subsequent literary followers. I highly encourage any and all to grab a short story or poem of his on a dark and stormy night, when the cold buffets your extremities and the pitch of night grasps hold of your imagination.
From powering commercial vehicles, to cities and space ships, cold fusion is the way of the future. And there have been some major break throughs in the past few years!
So when I switched my podcast over to RSS, none of my episodes were ported over. So I thought I'd re upload one of my favorites.
Suffice to say, the reviews for the newest Ant Man movie are mixed and confusing. My thoughts on the film are a little more nuanced than just thumbs up or down, what are yours?
Artificial intelligence has grown exponentially in our use of it over the past 15 years. From interactive A.I. to industrial and commercial, artificial intelligence is a monumental human creation. But do we allow it to outpace and supplant us?
Lets delve into James Camerons latest film and see if we can't pull it apart and understand it better.
We just got the end of Andor season 1 last week and WOW was it great! A lot of people felt conflicted about it being a Star Wars story instead of just another sci-fi dystopian show, but I think it adds a lot to the greater narrative of the Star Wars universe. To say the least, I am a huge fan!

One of the most well known and beloved fantasy stories of the modern age is that of Harry Potter. But does it stand up to a good amount of scrutiny?

This conspiracy actually has a LOT of real world ties, those mainly being the companies Clonaid and GenScript that are still operational today. But they aren't the only ones of their kind either! So the real question is: how long before the clones are unleashed?!

Let's talk Andor. To me it feels very comic book like, beginning very slow and allowing for time to breath and take everything in from the setting, the situation our character is in, to the minor details strewn throughout the background. I'm going to go ahead and call it, this is going to be better than Kenobi, Book of Boba Fett, maybe even the second Mandalorian season!

Does having science in fantasy stories kind of muck it up and distort the story? Is it distracting and is it needed at all? Or CAN a good fantasy story be told with the use of scientific advancement?
This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
The greater the science, the less people necessary. Greater advancements lead to fewer people being necessary to outright win any amount of conflict or war. I genuinely cannot wait until we get so hyper advanced that it becomes entertainment that is truly harmless to the masses. Robot army verses remote controlled gundams. Who's with me?!

Do you ever think that death may be glorified in entertainment or story telling in general? Is there any truly timeless story without a good death? Why is that?

Time for more Conspiracies! These are really fun to do as they are really just a quick way to unload a really terrifying idea and the thought that there MAY be some truth to it based off of proven evidence.

Something that I alway like seeing, especially in sci-fi shows or games is a good bioweapon. You know a good portion of the time is going to be combating that bioweapon and then the traumas of that weapons aftershocks.

There have been a lot of valid criticisms lauded at Book of Boba Fett for having very little Boba Fett, for being too much fan service, for being too short for what it is and I get all of that......BUT, I think I can see whats going on......

I think that overall design and integration of designs with each other in making a piece of science fiction work is FAR more important and essential in making a show or movie work than it is with any other genre.

Whats an epic without some of our favorite characters? Gandalf, Dumledore, Uncle Iroh, all wizened old mentor characters that serve to propel the narrative to greater and more enthralling levels of intrigue. But has this trope worn out its usefulness?

We have had a lot of progression in the past 100 years in terms of how we portray stories about monsters. I think monster stories are incredibly important for the importance of learning about fear, how to control it and especially how to recognize the monster in all of us and how to let it build us into a better person.

There have been very mixed reviews of the Book of Boba thus far and with only a 7 episode season, criticism hit a lot harder because the show has very little time to prove them wrong if the show is able to do so at all.

Let's dive deep into the logistics of why a government would seek to manipulate and control its people instead of doing what is in their best interest. I have always believed that imagination and by extension science fiction, has been the best way to break the psychological and even physical chains placed on us by the agents of fear and anger, allowing for greater true autonomy!

I enjoyed listening to Lee give his perspective on things as my senior in creating art in writing as we highlight the importance of authors to really understand your audience.
