This week we received the tragic news of the passing of DJ Stephen 'tWitch' Boss. DJ 'tWitch' died by suicide, and since the news broke, social media has been in a frenzy, urging people to check in on their "strong" friends. But what does that mean? How are we checking in? In this episode, RP talks about the importance of developing a mechanism/ system to check in with all of our loved ones (not just the strong and happy ones) and being intentional and empathetic in our connections.
Reducing the risk of suicide is a collective community effort. We have to start viewing these issues as communal and not just individual ones.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. In this episode of According to RP, Ritha shares the mic with domestic violence advocates Audace Garnett and Evelyn Hicks. Audace is no stranger to the According to RP show and has talked to us about domestic violence in the past. Evelyn is the founder of Shades of Love Empowerment Group, an organization that raises awareness for male victims and survivors of domestic violence. When it comes to domestic violence, society tends to focus on female victims and survivors. We do not often hear about men and youth victims/ survivors of domestic violence. But they are out there. Domestic violence does not discriminate and as you will hear in tonight's episode, the tactics and warning signs are the same across the board. This week, I have the pleasure of speaking with my young black brother, Damarc Barlatier, who a fellow alumnus of St. John's University. He is a fellow board member of the St. John's University Black Alumni Association. He is a fellow Haitian American, and he is, more, importantly a fellow activist in this fight for justice. We need to create platforms for our youth to develop and express themselves.
In tonight's episode, Damarc talks to us about an organization and movement he is spearheading called Next Phase of Change (NOPC).
Over the last few weeks, the community has been bombarded with details about the murders of Ahmaud Arbery and George Floyd. The police officers and vigilantes in these cases have been charged with murder, but what does that mean? Many of you are confused as to why it took so long to arrest the defendants, why the defendants are not charged with first-degree murder, and why the videos in both cases are not enough to lock the defendant’s up and throw away the key. Well, the system is complicated.
So, to make it all plain, tonight, I will be joined by the fantastic Bernarda Villalona, Esq., who is a former Philadelphia prosecutor. Make sure you tune in as we discuss and answer some of your questions about the arrests, evidence, charges, and the process moving forward. We will be briefly discussing the Amy Cooper situation and what consequences are available for people who make false reports.
Being black in America has never been easy. Decades later and blacks are still fighting to be seen as equal. This past week has once again devastated the black community. Pandemic aside, the events of this past week have left the community angry, furious, and hungry for change.
One this episode Paul and I discuss the Amy Cooper situation, where a white woman was caught on camera threatening a black man and calling the police stating that an African American man is threatening her and her dog, the murder of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police officers and the national response to these injustices.
