* Pharmacy Schools Update Dean Julie Akers from Washington State University College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and Dr. Ryan Hanson, Chair of the Pharmacy Department at the University of Washington School of Pharmacy will provide program updates and priorities. * Invasive HIB Outbreak - Alaska, Oregon and Washington have seen cases of invasive HIB in adults experiencing homelessness, drug use or smoking. MMWR and EpiTrends. WSPA Staff are members of the state workgroup to evaluate vaccination and outreach options. * Cyclosporiasis Outbreak - This parasite is best treated with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, and is not (yet?) a cause for concern in Washington. * Medicaid increases morphine equivalent threshold to 200 MME for certain diagnoses including hospice, palliative care and end of life starting 8//1. Pharmacies may still need to call managed Medicaid programs for expedited authorizations as they update their systems.

HR 3164 - Ensuring Community Access to Pharmacist Services Act would permit pharmacists to bill Medicare as Qualified Health Providers for flu, COVID and Strep Testing. Having a markup is a necessary step to final bill passage. Congresswoman DelBene sits on the committee. This review will make a recommendation to change, continue or terminate the program. Also, the 2026 AAP recommended Child and Adolescent Immunization Schedule has been issued and the West Coast Health Alliance (WCHA) endorses it.

The bill is an important incremental step toward regulatory oversight, transparency, and accountability of Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs), safeguarding the health of patients in your communities and the viability independent pharmacies.   • Paxlovid EUA Changes After March 8th, the EUA labeled Paxlovid will no longer be authorized. There will still be an EUA to permit Paxlovid in 12-18 year old who are at increased risk.   • Updated Naloxone Standing Order: The Washington State Naloxone Standing Order allows pharmacies to dispense naloxone to ANYONE who requests it or should have it with our Chief Science Officer, Dr. Tao Kwan-Gett as the prescriber. Please use this to help reduce opioid deaths in our communities.
  • COVID Emergency Orders to End: The emergency declarations for COVID will end on May 11th. Many emergency provisions will end, however some like the authority of pharmacists to vaccinate and test will continue into 2024 under the PREP Act.
