Stripping away the avant-garde pandemonium of their earlier work, the form Yves Tumor takes on throughout their fourth record, Heaven to a Tortured Mind, is the most accessible incarnation of their persona yet, revealing a mercurial genius who buries brilliant pop songs beneath ever-increasing sonic tumults. After years of waiting, almost insurmountable levels of hype and lore, Jay Electronica's debut record arrived after a recording period of 40 days and 40 nights. Fittingly, A Written Testimony is a mystical, distinctive album full of Jay's spiritual musings on Islam, black power, self-improvement, meditations on the expectations of an insatiable public and his high-art lyricism.

San Francisco's The Morning Benders took a stylistic leap with their second record, Big Echo, trading the jangle pop sounds of their debut for a swampy blend that sits somewhere between Californian coastal haze, sunny, 60s-pop inspired melodies and the experimental indie-rock of their contemporaries, adding intriguing touches of weirdness to every track along the way with the help of producer, Grizzly Bear bassist Chris Taylor.

WHAT WE DREW 우리가 그려왔던, the first full-length project from Korean-American producer Yaeji, is a timely ode to the blisses of community and the simple joys of domestic life. Straddling the blurry lines between dream pop, woozy hip hop and spacious, DIY house, WHAT WE DREW 우리가 그려왔던 makes some surprising detours from Yaeji’s signature introverted club music into industrial, breakbeat, ambient and jungle. Defined by Yaeji's deep appreciation of community, WHAT WE DREW 우리가 그려왔던 stands out from other prescribed self-isolation listening, a celebration of all the small pleasures we used to take for granted: family, friendship, routine.

The ahead-of-its-time self-titled debut LP from Sydney's Flume was the first step in the producer's eventual journey from a kid who grew up on Sydney's Northern Beaches, making music on his first laptop, learning production from a sample CD in a box of cereal, to world-conquering festival headliner and GRAMMY-winning pioneer of the future bass genre.

Dev Hynes' third record as Blood Orange, 2016's Freetown Sound, is a warm and impassioned personal document of black culture and history, using samples, collaborations and a mix of genres in his trademark collage-style approach to create a multi-layered story of the historically oppressed, finding strength in community and sounding like the coolest lost mixtape.

Along with their label Butter Sessions, Melbourne duo Sleep D have had an immeasurable impact on Australian dance music at large, helping to move the scene from the deep house and disco dominance of the early 10s to more eclectic electro, techno and breakbeat. Their 2019 full-length, Rebel Force, is a jubilant, free-form anthology of everything they do best, packed to the brim with gritty acid basslines, tight percussion and a pervasive ominous ambience throughout.

Long before they hit mainstream popularity, the second album from Tennessee family act Kings of Leon, Aha Shake Heartbreak, honed in on their hook-smart brand of Southern bar rock meets garage rock revivalism, sounding like a cross between The Strokes and Lynyrd Skynyrd with succinct songwriting, improved confidence and a total lack of pretension.

Blue Mountains songwriter Julia Jacklin took home the 2019 SMAC Award for Album of the Year last Tuesday for her heartwrenching, extraordinary second record, Crushing. At the end of 2019, Craterface, a producer-rapper duo out of Newcastle made up of Baby Bruh and Taki Local, released their debut mixtape, Don't Be Confused. Following in the footsteps of JPEGMAFIA, Brockhmapton, and taking production cues from SOPHIE and Kanye West, Craterface's Don't Be Confused mixtape is some of the most inventive hip hop to come out of Australia.

Joyride the Stars is the debut project from Hearteyes, the latest artistic adventure from Sydney’s Maurice Santiago (aka George Michelle), his most unabashedly sentimental and openly emotional release yet. Channelling fellow pop iconoclasts The 1975, Lil Peep, 100 gecs and Ariana Grande, Hearteyes packages earnest, poignant honesty inside glistening, genreless tracks that feel thoroughly modern. Existing somewhere at the intersection between all these strands of popular music from the past decade, Hearteyes’ debut is difficult to define. Animated by this sense of openness and the realisation that boundaries are meaningless, Joyride the Stars follows Hearteyes’ artistic impulses wherever they lead, reaching the bittersweet, cathartic bliss that comes from releasing yourself from past inhibitions.

Vampire Weekend return from a six year hiatus with their fourth record, Father of The Bride, a sprawling, shaggy double album that features some of the band's loosest, most playfully adventurous songwriting to date. It's an album about contentment, aging into life's responsibilities, finding someone who you'd rather spend the night in with - it feels unburdened by the existential worries of the band's earlier work and the anxiety of a comeback record. Above all, it revels in the lightness, wholeheartedly embracing the band's thoroughly uncool influences whilst also showing why Ezra Koenig remains one of the smartest lyricists and songwriters working today.

From the icy solitude of For Emma, Forever Ago, Bon Iver brought his catalogue full circle in 2019 with his fourth studio record, i,i, his warmest and most outward-looking, generous music yet. Made in collaboration with a total of 52 of his contemporaries, including James Blake, Moses Sumney and many more, i,i is the natural end of the empathetic, innovative, community-minded approach to songwriting Justin Vernon has been honing since the start of his endlessly shapeshifting Bon Iver project. One of our favourite records of the year, i,i shows why no one writes a song quite like him.

Lana Del Rey's sixth record, the majestic and stunning Norman F*g Rockwell!, is one of 2019's most towering musical achievements, a Laurel Canyon-bathed exploration into a world descending into chaos in all its ridiculousness, meaninglessness and artificiality. Nevertheless, it fills you with a strange sort of calm, one last slow exhale as Lana watches a world burn around her. It's her finest artistic statement to date, the work of a rapidly enduring songwriter who has finally found her time.

Please Be Kind is the second record from Sydney stalwart Mikey Barker's (also of Bleeding Knees Club, Neighbourhood Void and 1-800-Mikey) bedroom emo project Dying Adolescence. According to Mikey, Please Be Kind represents a time of change for the project, a summation of the various influences and obsessions that shaped his adolescent years. Quietly, it became one of our favourite Sydney releases of 2019.

The 1975’s outrageous, eclectic, sprawling third record, A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships, established the group as a generational voice making some of the most intelligent pop music today. Tackling gun violence, drug addiction, social media, Kanye, Trump and trying to find human connections, A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships is an overwhelming record for overwhelming times that dares to be sincere and optimistic in the face of near constant pessimism and irony.
