Founded in the midst of the January 2020 bush fires, Deb and her team have grown this charity to provide aid relief for emergency floods, storms and fires, as well as providing on-going support for aged care, families experiencing domestic violence, and homelessness.
Deb discusses running a 100% volunteer run charity and we learn more about the amazing effort behind designing and putting together relief packs for those in need.

Happy Wednesday everybody and welcome back to another Bayside Bubble. Today we are joined by Annie Vickers, founder of Women on Walks, WOW for short.
We hear about how Annie grew tired of walking repeated laps of Dendy Park and instead, began to organise walks further afield for a small group of family and friends. The immense interest in this grew and led to the start of WOW in early 2019.
Annie tells us about her three prerequisites for scouting new walking trails: a 9-12km distance, toilet access, and (most importantly) a cafe to catch up with coffee afterwards.
We learn about the vast time effort Annie puts into organising walking trails, mentoring members, keeping the Facebook page active, engaging participants throughout lockdown with virtual walks around the world.
The bonds that are formed, friendships made, and stories of overcoming trepidation are amongst Annie's favourite memories, and we revel in hearing about the incredible mentorship program that she runs in cooperation with the organised walks.

In part two of the Bayside Banter bike accident story we pick up where we left off, in the back of an ambulance off to the emergency department at Sandringham Hospital.
Maree discusses her tactics for talking her way into family-only access to accompany Kate through the hospital, and we relive the hardest and most painful moment for both.
We laugh about the characters we meet along the way and express our gratitude to the Sandy Hospital staff members including super nurse Sue, and orthopaedic surgeon wiz, Wesley, that were fantastic throughout the very long and exhausting weekend.

Today we are joined by Gary Nash or ‘Nashie’ as he’s fondly known at the Hampton Rovers Football Club. Nashie has a 40 year history of involvement with the club as a premiership player, boundary umpire, coach, runner, and President.
Now a life member of the club, we sit down and ask him to reflect on his greatest club and sporting achievements over the years.
We are lucky to catch him in the season that marks the 50 year anniversary of Nashie’s premiership win and hear about the reunion in the works and the process of tracking down players. We are joined by one of our own today on a special episode of the Bayside Bubble with social media manager, Josh Stanley to enlighten us about his other career working as a professional magician.
We learn about his twelve year (and counting) professional experience performing this art, admiring his most recent stint of performances for the Melbourne Comedy Festival and Adelaide Fringe Festival.

Josh takes us through the process of handling difficult audience members (Kate and Maree for starters) and reacting to stressful situations in which things go wrong, as well as exploring what it takes to make a career in magic happen, including the writing, producing and acting that is required along with the skill for performing the magic itself.
We learn that the magic performing community is an immensely supportive and creative one that organises conventions and competitions aimed at promoting youth participation.

Rishi retells the happy story of how he and his wife met through an arranged marriage and we discuss the difficult circumstances that have geographically separated his family due to worldwide covid restrictions.
We discuss the decision Rishi made to remain open for takeaways over lockdown last year and the rare opportunity that it served the community to leave the house and experience some form of human interaction.

We explore the idea of ‘anonymous theatre’, an American concept in which the cast rehearse individually and meet upon opening night creating and the excitement that ensues.
Dr Cheryl Threadgold regales us with tales from her considerable experience in the industry as well as her extensive research and we discuss how this is showcased in her new book.

Raised in Brighton and braving the icy waters of Brighton since 1973, he had a formidable career as teacher and as a local Brighton Councillor. Elected as the Mayor of Brighton in 1992/1993, he was instrumental in preventing the closure and ensuring the preservation of the Middle Brighton Baths.

Instantly recognizable and a feature of Melbourne tourism, the Brighton bathing boxes draw
a crowd on even the rainiest of days. In the family for over 50 years, Simon tells us how his
father, David, jumped at an opportunity to own a piece of Brighton in the 1960’s. Originally
a pale green, we discover how this bathing box adopted the iconic Australian flag design
that has since become such a draw for tourists and celebrities alike.
Maree finds out about the history of bathing boxes and their original purpose to conserve
modesty, whilst pondering the irony of an unofficial nudist beach not too far away in the
70’s in Sandringham.
We reminisce together about the days of a train-line to the water’s edge and the stories that
encapsulate a childhood centered around the beach and the family’s bathing box that Vicky
and Simon continue to enjoy with their family and friends today.
