Show Notes: Featuring Guest Nancy Roberts owner of the DISC Wizard
Nancy first used the DISC Behavior assessment in 1997 and fell in love with the power of DISC for her clients.
Nancy works with her clients to help them with talent acquisition, employee engagement, and retention. For hiring she uses the job benchmarking
process and believes all jobs should be benchmarked, as it improves the quality of the hires and longer term retention.
Cindy and Nancy discuss the importance of the driving forces/motivators fit for the roles their clients are filling. If they don't get their motivators met in their role, they are unlikely to stay. Nancy also uses the 25 Competencies assessment, named the DNA assessment, and the Hartmann, which is a more robust assessment that gives you a snap shot in time of how a person's mind analyzes and interprets their experiences, and how they react under different situations.
Enjoy the banter as these two share how they bring value to their clients.

The DISCy Chicks speak to the fact that DISC Behaviors are the science of observable behavior. Listen or watch the video as Cindy and Martha walk you through each of the styles that present on the high end of the scales. Here's a break down for you...the high dominants show up "large and in charge". The high influence style loves people, are gregarious, and energetic. The high steady style is also relationship oriented like the influence style, but they move at a slower pace and prefer to socialize in one-on-one settings. Lastly, the high compliant is not so social, moves at a slower more careful pace in order to do their best work. The steady and compliant styles are more introverted styles compared to the high dominant and influence styles.
The next time you are stuck at the airport, have some fun observing others to practice your power of observation using DISC!

Succession Planning
The DISCy Chicks wrap up they Employee Lifecycle series on using the many tools offered by TTISI to enable leaders to build their bench strength within their organization. The job benchmarking process is revisited as you look at the employees that you think are highly promotable. Cindy and Martha have conducted job benchmarking sessions for their clients using subject matter experts within a client's business. (You can listen to previous sessions on job benchmarking using the DISCy Chicks link below.) Once the benchmark is completed, you can then use the Tri-Metrix DNA assessment (that includes behaviors, driving forces and 25 competencies) to compare your current employee's qualifications for a promotion. Bottom line, you have more data to objectively choose the best employee for the job. This quote comes to mind for us, "Great leaders develop other leaders."

Applying Assessment Results for Employee Development
Cindy and Martha share their experience and wisdom in strategically developing your employees. The DISCy Chicks recommend one-on-one meetings with your direct reports once a week for thirty minutes, which are accountability meetings for both of you. They also recommend giving feedback in a very specific way vs. a very generalized way.
Remember to review your employee's assessment to make sure you are communicating with their style in mind to make your time together more effective. In these meetings you can flex your coaching muscles and help your employees to come of up with their own solutions, where your role is to ask really good questions. Mentoring is also another way to grow your employees by pairing them with a mentor that has strengths your employee needs to more fully develop. Lastly, you can give directions when you delegated a new task your employee has never done before! As leaders you are persistently improving your self-awareness and for this we use the emotional intelligence assessment, which is very robust. Enjoy!!

The DISCy Chicks talk about assessments that can boost the bonding process for you and your new employee. Why wait 90 days to see how your new hire is fitting in? We recommend on Day 1 that the manager review new hire's assessment with with hime or her and even better, to review the manager's report too. You can merge both reports into a comparison report to show the new employee's DISC profile as well as the manager's report, side by side.
There is also the "gap report" produced during the job benchmarking process that indicates a new hire's strengths for the role as well as areas of development. And finally, we recommend updating your team report to include the new hire and share in a team meeting to see where and how the new team member fits in, and what he or she brings to the party!

What is Adaptive Behavior?
Listen as the DISCy Chicks help you understand the importance of your adaptive behavior at work. The truth is we all adapt our behavior at times and particularly when we are at work, not so much at home with family and friends. Our DISC Behavior assessment provider, TTISI has developed a patented method for both a natural behavior style profile to show we communicate at home as well as how we adapt our behavior style at work. We adapt our behavior primarily because of the nature of the work we do and to also "fit in" to the culture of the business.
Let Cindy and Martha walk you through an example of someone that adapts their profile at work and the why's behind this need to adapt. As a leader, understanding this information enables you to best support each member of your team to perform successfully.

The DISCY Chicks kick off 2023 with a bang as Cindy interviews high energy Amanda Moser for our final recording for 2022! Amanda shares how she is using this tool for selection of employees and nurses at Next Move, a premier travel nurse agency. Amanda uses DISC and Driving Forces when onboarding of cohorts of new hires to grow their self-awareness and to understand the impact they will have on those they serve on the job, and she uses the comparison reports for the new employee and their manager so they can best understand how both parties like to be communicated with one another.

The DISCy Chicks went to the experts in leadership development...John Maxwell, Steven Covey, Daniel Goleman, and Tony Robbins to help them answer this question. Cindy and Martha share with you the themes from the masters such as the importance of self-awareness, self-confidence, agility, and humility. Other competency themes are to seek first to understand, listen to understand (rather than to respond), and adopt a growth mindset.

The latest buzzword in business performance seems to be Quiet Quitting.
The DISCy Chicks did their research to see if this was really a thing. Quiet Quitting seems a lot like an employee engagement issue, so we went straight to the experts at Gallup to see what they say.
Listen in as the Chicks talk about this trend in the workforce in the U.S. Did you know that 50% of the workforce, according to Gallup, is not engaged. Is this the same as Quite Quitters? The DISCy Chicks reveal their results.
Employees who are not engaged mentally or psychologically with their work, and just doing only what is required of their job. This should be raising great concern for leaders of any business! There is another category called actively disengaged. It's those employees that are very verbal about their discontent and spreading their misery with their co-workers, which is 18% of employees. This leaves 32% of your employees truly engaged in their work. Listen to the suggestions offered by Martha and Cindy to help you identify and re-engage any quiet quitters you might have. Does your business need a people strategy?
The DISCy Chicks are baaack following a summer break! Season 5's theme is how you as a leader or CEO of your business can strategically use assessments to enable organization-wide success with your employees, customers, and vendors. Cindy and Martha are zooming out this season to take a strategic look at how assessments can help you run the people side of your business.
Do you have communication systems in place to ensure an effective flow of company information to and from your employees? Do you have solutions in place to guide your hiring and how you strategically build a high functioning team?
What if something goes wrong (and it will): your sales representative offends your best client, your star employee has fallen from stardom, or that vendor that is not getting products that you desperately need when you need them. What do you do when there is conflict between important team members? Assessments can help you build a framework to handle your people issues during critical touchpoints in your business lifecycle.
We are thinking BIG this season and we invite your questions and comments.

Cindy and Martha share their wisdom about EQ and leadership. High performance is the hallmark for leaders with high emotional intelligence. So, what does this look like? Effective leaders are trustworthy and show up in a consistent, reliable way and can relate to people that are different from them by meeting each employee where they are. They are also relatable and able to poke fun at themselves. Leaders with high EQ make a point to know their team members and give each employee what they need to be motivated and engaged at work.

The Chicks, Cindy and Martha, address the elements of emotional intelligence as it relates to others in the form of social awareness and social regulation.
Social awareness has two primary components, the ability to show empathy, like being able to walk a mile in someone else's shoes. The second component is being able to read the room during a team meeting or a larger group scenario, which means paying attention to the verbal and nonverbal responses of others.
Social regulation pertains to being able to influence the emotional clarity of others to manage relationships effectively and create a network of followers. Tips are shared on how to grow in these two dimensions of EQ as well.

The DISCy Chicks turn the DISC graph on its side. Instead of talking about high and low, we talk about DISC factors on a continuum - right to left. As humans, we are innately searching to improve and when you a low score on your DISC graph, you may look at that as a deficiency (which it certainly is NOT). Turning the graph sideways, removes the distraction in the back of one's mind of "Gosh, I really need to raise my D score."
Listen and learn how each style behaves when their scores are left or right of center rather thank above or below the 50% mark on the graph.

With their fast pace, gregarious, fun way of being, the other three styles have very different responses to the high influence behavior style. Remember we all adapt our behavior style at work to fit the job we are in and the culture of the company. The high influence style tends to be more sensitive to the emotional responses of others, because they want to be liked and accepted by others. Cindy and Martha rarely see this pattern in their coaching and consulting practices which is why they agreed this is the true unicorn profile out of the three patterns they have discussed this month!
Think about it...the Dominant style is fast paced, a fast decision maker, loves change, is not afraid of conflict and is stress-hardy while the Steady style is slow paced, a slower decision maker, does not like change or conflict and is not stress-hardy. The upside is the two styles complement one another and together they achieve results and can go the extra mile to accomplish their goals! Meet the Achiever and the Marathoner styles.

Cindy and Martha continue the conversation about intrapersonal or Me-Me conflict for those of you that have the influence and compliant behavior style combination. The high influence style is all about relationships, being affirmed and influencing others, while the compliant style is all about data, information and seeking quality or better put perfection in their work. The other big difference is pace. The compliant style moves at a slower, cautious pace and the influence tendency moves at a very fast pace. Has COVID fatigue impacted the engagement of your employees? If so, listen as Cindy and Martha share the many ways assessments can unlock employee engagement! Here are the outcomes you can create within your own organization!
Communication is the foundation for building trust and engagement. Learning your own communication preferences and how each employee prefers to be communicated fills the gaps of understanding that can negatively affect employee engagement.
Teamwork can also be enhanced greatly when everyone knows the assessment results of the whole team. Understanding the strengths of your teammates enables them to be leveraged so everyone's gifts are leveraged and differences can be resolved more readily.
Assessments create transparency within your organization. A culture of trust and understanding happens when employees feel their leaders are investing in these assessment tools to grow their employees.
Assessments help identify areas for growth and development, again an investment that keeps employees engaged and satisfied working for you.
Lastly, productivity can be positively impacted when employees realize their motivational and developmental needs are being met at work. Managers can be mindful about how each employee prefers to work and make sure that happens.

Job benchmarking enables successful hiring and onboarding
Join the DISCy Chicks now to hear how the job benchmarking process and assessments enable you to select perfect additions to your team! The data the Gap report gives to you makes that difference. Based on the job profile you and your subject matter experts created, a list of behavioral interviewing questions are created in your report. These questions require your top applicants to give testimony about their behavior and driving forces (motivations) that create success for the role. Then it's up to you to listen carefully to see if they truly have the qualifications to best fit the role.
Cindy and Martha also share how this same tool fits into your best practice onboarding process. Sharing the outcome of their DISC Success Insights report and Gap report with the new employee and their manager enables both parties to understand how to best communicate and work with each other on day one!
We welcome you to listen in on this powerful podcast, designed for your success!
Cindy and Martha walk you through the benchmarking process in order to understand the value of two reports you can use to make your best hiring decisions.
The first report is called the gap report, which compares your candidates' assessment results to the job profile report created from the benchmarking process. The report identifies where your candidate is within the benchmark profile and where there is a "gap" in your candidate's profile compared to the benchmark. Remember, there is no PERFECT candidate! Use this data along with the information from your interviews and a candidate's resume to make a hiring decision.
The second report is called a comparison report that is used when you have two or more candidates being considered for the same job. The DISCy Chicks admit that while DISC is our go-to assessment, we also use a companion assessment that beautifully complements the DISC behaviors assessment ...the 12 Driving Forces. This assessment measures a person's hidden drivers or what intrinsically motivates a person in life. Is it pursuit of knowledge, helping others, making money or one of the remaining nine drivers? Understanding what compels us to get out of bed as another step towards self awareness. Realizing that others are likely motivated by different conditions, great leaders learn the key motivators of employees and candidates they are considering hiring. This assessment is used by Cindy and Martha in the job benchmarking process to ensure candidates are the right fit for the role and for the culture of your company as well as team building sessions.
Listen as they walk you through all twelve of the driving forces. There are four primary motivators that truly "drive your bus" every day concerning decisions and choices you make. Then there are four situational driving forces that you use when you need them and lastly there are four indifferent motivators that you really don't care about!
Whether you are selecting new employees or using this tool for teamwork, it enables a good job fit and improved communication and understanding of others among your team! Another use of the tool is also for onboarding new employees with their manager, so they understand themselves in the context of their job and understand the behaviors and motivators of their manager and vice versa for the manager!
We'd love to get your feedback on FaceBook about the 12 Driving Forces.
Join us this week as we interview Dana Cain, Director of Finance and Accounting for JES Holdings, a fully integrated real estate development business (that is a client of Martha's). Dana shares her story of becoming a finance and accounting leader and how she intentionally utilizes DISC Behaviors and Driving Forces in managing her team and relationships across the JES organization.
Listen to some of her examples of applying this DISC tool to her selection and hiring process within her own department as well as introducing her leadership team and staff to DISC with teaming sessions that Martha facilitated over the past several years. This has enabled improved communication among her team members and has given her leaders tools to manage their employees performance on a day-in-day out basis. If an issue arises with an employee, they reach for their copy of the employee's DISC report to prepare for a constructive coaching conversation.

Ethos operates a national network of emergency and specialty animal hospitals in 25 locations in the U.S. Holly’s early business experience was in operations. She gravitated over time to the people side of the business in human resources. She also has been a successful entrepreneur and knows what it takes to drive business success.
She was first introduced to DISC while she was studying for her MBA. Listen as she shares with us her “ah ha” moment as she learned the benefits of having diverse DISC styles on her grad school team. Holly learned the power of DISC and how the different styles complement one another on teams.

Ever notice your DISC report contains two graphs- Your Natural Style and your Adapted Style? Adapted Style is how you behave at work when you feel you need to adjust your communication style to fit the environment. Take our free assessment (DISCy Chicks Podcast on FaceBook), pop some corn, and follow along as we go through each factor. Look and see if you are adapting, and if you're not, is that good? Find out!
The DISCy Chicks talk about our favorite version of the DISC assessment- and believe us, there are many! We introduce you to our hero and favorite psychologist/professor, William Marston to show you how all of this got started. Yes, Marston established the principles of the DISC behavioral dimensions but that's not even what he is famous for. Listen to discover that you are probably already familiar with two other pieces of Marston's work and they have NOTHING to do with DISC. You won't believe it!
And finally, understand why it's imperative to get LOW! Don't be fooled by just looking at the high scores on a DISC graph. If you are, you are definitely missing out.
In this episode, the DISCy Chicks Martha Forlines and Cindy Jacoby explain in depth each dimension of DISC assessment, letter by letter and reveal their personal behavioral graphs as they go. You will see the strengths and challenges of each letter type and how Cindy and Martha have reign-in or step-up certain factors in given situations.
DISCy Chicks Martha Forlines and Cindy Jacoby talk about their favorite leadership behavior styles assessment DISC. If you are also a fan of DISC or just curious about what it measures and why they love- tune in to this and future episodes of the DISCy Chicks podcast!
