World Hearing Day 2024 will focus on overcoming the challenges posed by societal misperceptions and stigmatizing mindsets through awareness-raising and information-sharing, targeted at the public and healthcare providers. Globally, over 80% of ear and hearing care needs remain unmet. Unaddressed hearing loss poses an annual cost of nearly US$1 trillion globally. Deeply ingrained societal misperceptions and stigmatizing mindsets are key factors that limit efforts for preventing and addressing hearing loss. Changing mindsets related to ear and hearing care is crucial to improving access and mitigating the cost of unaddressed hearing loss. Professor Attiya Waris, UN Independent Expert on foreign debt, other international financial obligations and human rights
She is the only Professor of Fiscal Law and Policy in Eastern and Central Africa. She is the first female Director of Research and Enterprise at the University of Nairobi. She holds a PhD in Law and is a specialist in Fiscal Law, Policy and Development. She is an advocate, company secretary and arbitrator of over 20 years standing and was the founding Chair, Fiscal Studies Committee from 2017-2020. She spearheaded the first agreement on sharing of data between a University and a revenue agency globally in 2016. She is an Observer to the UN Tax Committee.
She teaches at the Law School, University of Nairobi, Kenya and has previously taught in South Africa, Rwanda, Malaysia and the United Kingdom. She has researched and published on global, African, Asian, European as well as Latin American issues. Her book 'Tax and Development’ (2013) is the first publication globally that links the areas of tax and human rights and her more recent publication ‘Financing Africa’ is the first publication globally to map out African fiscal systems.
She is fluent in English, French and Kiswahili. She has been invited to speak about taxation, illicit financial flows, tax justice and human rights at some of the leading international and regional organizations & universities as well as before governments and national parliaments across the world.

Breastfeeding and complementary feeding
Poor nutrition during the early stages of the life-course can lead to extensive and irreversible damage to physical growth and brain development. On the other hand, good nutrition has a positive effect. Breastfeeding is the optimal way of feeding babies, offering them the nutrients they need in the right balance, as well as offering protection against disease.
In 2012 the World Health Assembly (WHA) approved the global nutrition target of increasing the rate of exclusive breastfeeding in the first 6 months of age to at least 50% by 2025. The World Health Organization recommends that babies should be exclusively breastfed for the first six months of life, followed by introduction of nutritionally adequate and safe complementary foods, and with continued breastfeeding up to two years old or beyond.
Breastfeeding for more than 6 months or longer compared to no or shorter breastfeeding is associated with a reduction of childhood leukemia of 19% .
Babies who are breastfed are 60 percent less likely to die from SIDS compared to those not breastfeed. The effect is even greater for infants exclusively breastfed.
A 30 year follow-up of a cohort captured at birth showed that adults who had been breastfed earned higher wages, an effect mediated through an increase in years of schooling.
Workplace policies in support of breastfeeding increase employee retention, performance, loyalty, productivity and morale.
Adults who were breastfed as children score 3.3 points higher on cognitive development indicators, which leads to more years of schooling.
Breastfeeding leaves no carbon footprint. Breast-milk is renewable and produced and fed to the baby without pollution, packaging, or waste.
Beyond providing perfect nutrition and protection against infection and death, constituents in breast milk likely affect epigenetic programming at a critical time when an infant’s gen expression is being developed for life.
“If a new vaccine became available that could prevent 1 million or more child deaths a year, and that was moreover cheap, safe, administered orally, and required no cold chain, it would become an immediate public health imperative. Breastfeeding can do all this and more13.”
Longer breastfeeding reduces the risk of overweight/obesity by 13%, helping to fight chronic diseases caused by obesity. It also lowers the risk of type 2 diabetes by 35%14.
Women who breastfeed compared with women who don’t breastfeed or breastfeed less have a 32% lower risk of type 2 diabetes, a 26% lower risk of breast cancer and a 37% lower risk of ovarian cancer15.
The International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes provides guidelines to prevent the inappropriate marketing of breastmilk substitutes, including infant formula, feeding bottles, nipples, follow-on milks and related products16. It needs to be legislated and monitored. When manufacturers and distributors are in violation, they should be sanctioned.
Mother-child bonding is enhanced when mothers interact with their infants while breastfeeding. Longer breastfeeding is associated with more sensitive maternal responsiveness and the security that comes with attachment.

Road traffic injuries are a leading cause of death and disability worldwide, with around 1.3 million people killed and as many as 50 million people injured each year. For people aged 5-29 years, there is no greater threat to their lives. Globally, 1 of every 4 deaths occur among pedestrians and cyclists.
The Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 reflects an ambitious target to reduce road traffic deaths and injuries by 50% by 2030. It highlights that they can be prevented by addressing the whole of the transport system, taking action to ensure safe roads, vehicles and behAviours as well as to improve emergency care.
WHO, in collaboration with partners, organizes periodic UN Global Road Safety Weeks. This 7th edition focuses on sustainable transport, in particular the need to shift to walking, cycling and using public transport. Road safety is both a prerequisite for and an outcome of this shift.
WHO invites all road safety and sustainable mobility partners to mark the 7th UN Global Road Safety Week by organizing events and activities and sharing messages and materials on social media with the hashtags:

31 May is World No Tobacco Day
This yearly celebration informs the public on the dangers of using tobacco, the business practices of tobacco companies, what WHO is doing to fight the tobacco epidemic, and what people around the world can do to claim their right to health and healthy living and to protect future generations.
The Member States of the World Health Organization created World No Tobacco Day in 1987 to draw global attention to the tobacco epidemic and the preventable death and disease it causes. In 1987, the World Health Assembly passed Resolution WHA40.38, calling for 7 April 1988 to be a "a world no-smoking day." In 1988, Resolution WHA42.19 was passed, calling for the celebration of World No Tobacco Day, every year on 31 May.

Happy Majority Rule Day! Today in History; January 10, 1967 The election of January 10, 1967 ushers in a new era of a government that reflected the popular majority will the Bahamas, and the principle of one person, one vote. The incumbent United Bahamian Party was defeated by a coalition of the Progressive Liberal Party and two independent MPs to break the deadlock. Previously, only landowners were eligible to vote in as many places as they owned property. January 10th has been recognized as a national holiday by the Majority Rule Day act 2013.

EARTH DAY 2021 & SMALL ISLAND SUSTAINABILITY
On this episode of the Youth Perspective sit down with a myriad of individuals as we discuss Earth Day 2021 which was held April 22nd around the globe and take a deep dive into the world of Small Island Sustainability. A little about Earth day, 51 years ago, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) did not exist, which meant there was no Clean Air Act, no Clean Water Act, and no legal regulatory mechanism to protect our environment. That all changed in April 1970 when Senator Gaylord Nelson created Earth Day as a way to force this issue onto the national agenda. Twenty million Americans demonstrated in different U.S. cities -- and it worked. In December 1970, Congress authorized the creation of the EPA, a new federal agency to tackle environmental issues. Now, each year on April 22, people all around the world come together on Earth Day to celebrate the planet's environment and raise public awareness about pollution.

On this episode of the Youth Perspective we focus on Purpose Awareness 2021. Purpose Awareness was founded by Antonia Lightbourne, CEO and founder of eNue Global. This is a movement that focuses on helping youth appreciate, embrace and release their inner greatness. After being inspired by God in 2015 to launch this initiative, she finally launch in 2016 along with her amazing team.
The message of purpose is one that is extremely profound and necessary. There are so many individuals that merely exist not knowing that they were created with a unique purpose by their creator. Once individuals are convinced of this truth it will bring a sense of both fulfillment and belonging and will push them into being their best selves.
This year, the theme is “LIVE – Don’t just exist, choose life”. We want persons to be intentional about maximizing their potential and fully embracing their purpose.

THE SOUTH ELEUTHERA MISSION: COMMUNITY EDUCATION & EMPOWERMENT
In this episode of the Youth Perspective, we speak with Ms. Danielle Gibson, Executive Director of the South Eleuthera Mission. The South Eleuthera Mission (SEM) is a non-profit organization that was incorporated in 2008 in the Bahamas. Its formation was a direct result of the efforts of residents of the South Eleuthera district who felt it was necessary to establish a facility to serve as a catalyst for educational and community development programs.
SEM occupies a historic building, replete with rich and colorful Bahamian history. It was originally, a Methodist manse for missionaries whose construction dates back more than 140 years, it then serviced the communities as the main Clinic, the structure is now a Bahamas Heritage Site, and part of the Antiquities Monuments and Museums Corporation. We get the opportunity to speak about the projects they offer weekly and even an upcoming event this month! This was an amazing show and I look forward to sharing it with you! Today in History; January 10, 1967
The election of January 10, 1967 ushers in a new era of a government that reflected the popular majority will the Bahamas, and the principle of one person, one vote.
The incumbent United Bahamian Party was defeated by a coalition of the Progressive Liberal Party and two independent MPs to break the deadlock.
Previously, only landowners were eligible to vote in as many places as they owned property.
January 10th has been recognized as a national holiday by the Majority Rule Day act 2013.

6 years ago we lost 9 amazing individuals. But today we still remember them and rejoice in great moments and time spent with all of them.
I spend some time with Lavard through the years. I was always blown away but his artistry, ministry and family life.

On this episode of The Youth Perspective we remember and commemorate the events that took place of May 10th 1980, 40 years ago when the Royal Bahamas Defence Force patrol craft HMBS Flamingo was attacked and sunk by Cuban MIG jet fighters near Ragged Island. Four Marines lost their lives in that ordeal. The names of those officers: Able Seaman Fenrick Sturrup, 21, Marine Seaman Austin Rudolph Smith, 21, Marine Seaman David Allison Tucker, 21, and Marine Seaman Edward Arnold Williams, 23. Fifteen Officers and Marines survived that tragedy. We speak with one of those survivors who will share the harrowing story Lt. Commander Whitfield Neilly. We remember, We honor and we tell the story!

Here's some important information!
What is a Coronavirus?
Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses found in both animals and humans. Some infect people and are known to cause illnesses ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).
What is a “novel” coronavirus?
A novel coronavirus (CoV) is a new strain of coronavirus that has not been previously identified in humans. The new, or “novel” coronavirus, now called 2019-nCoV, had not been previously detected before the outbreak was reported in Wuhan, China in December 2019.
How does the virus spread?
The new coronavirus is a respiratory virus which spreads primarily through contact with an infected person through respiratory droplets. Droplets can be generated when a person, for example, coughs, sneezes, or through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose. It is important that everyone practice good respiratory hygiene. For example, sneeze or cough into a flexed elbow, or use a tissue and discard it immediately into a closed bin. It is also very important for people to wash their hands regularly with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

The primary tasks of the HBC is to advise the Government of The Bahamas, generate networks for communication that link the three sectors – public, private and civil society and to communicate with and inform the wider community regarding actions required to decrease the national burden of NCDs. We focus on the importance of physical activity for youth/young adults. Stevens’ story has gained global attention attracting U.S and Bahamian news networks, and television shows to his monumental success story. Now This News, who has millions of followers world-wide, has aired Stevens’ story on video which is now trending online. In Fall 2019 Stevens will enroll into a 3-year dual-degree program between Manhattan School of Music and Columbia University which will give him a Master of Music in Classical Piano Performance and a Master of Arts in Music Education, which he plans to use to impact the world of music and arts education. Stevens has goals of opening his own performing arts schools, competitions, and festivals and establishing scholarship funds and foundations for deserving students who have dreams but need financial support.. UNIFORMS FOR ALL WITH UFA BAHAMAS
On this episode of the Youth Perspective we feature UFA (Uniforms for all). Their mission is to recycle used uniforms for all high schools in New Providence. Donated uniforms will be mended, laundered and redistributed to those students in need free of charge. Many students have perfectly good uniforms that they no longer use or have out grown.
Simultaneously, many students are in need of uniforms for varying reasons. UFA’s mission is to connect that unused uniform with the student who can use it! It is an island wide effort meant to not only assist those students in need but to also unite/galvanize student leaders from high schools in New Providence schools in this effort. You can help by donating gently used uniforms in the bins provided at Solomon’s Yamacraw, Solomon’s Super Center and Cost Right. Donation period: July 1st – July 31st, 2019.
