With no Austin FC game this past weekend to discuss, the Anthem pod turns its attention to the upcoming 2020 European Championships. 2021, but still called 2020. We dunno why, either, ask UEFA!
Mark and Conor are joined by Austin Chronicle's Eric Goodman to review each of the Euro Groups, speculate on which teams are most likely to progress to the knock-out stage, and each pin their colors to the mast when it comes to selecting the nation they believe will win it all!
As an additional treat, the pod also gets the Euro views of a former international footballer, Chris James, who has plied his trade in England, France, USA, Australia, New Zealand, and Finland where he currently still plays and coaches. We're guessing his opinions might carry more weight than our other schlubs. You're welcome, listeners!

- First seats were installed in the stadium last week.
- The grass installation was completed over the weekend. Installation took about 3 days and was done at night. They cut it in Arizona, trucked it to McKalla, and installed it in 24 hours.
- The club announced that it will field a unified Special Olympics team in 2021
- Austin-based Netspend was announced as the official sleeve sponsor of Austin FC
- The 4ATX Foundation was busy last week too. They unveiled a mini-pitch at Woolridge School Park and along with St David’s HealthCare, distributed 1000 soccer balls at HopeFest Family Resource.
- CapMetro released some renderings of what the rail stop at McKalla Place might look like. We’ve got a copy of the rendering up on our Instagram account.

Major League Soccer
- The Supporters’ Shield Foundation reversed their decision and will award it this year. Austin Anthem is the ISC member for Austin and our member representatives voted in favor of awarding it. Fun fact: Austin Anthem will be the custodians of the shield when Austin FC wins it.
- The league is rumored to be considering pushing the start of the 2021 season to April. Good news, we might be able to play our first regular season match at home. Bad news, it means COVID is enough of an issue where match scheduled and stadium attendance is still in question.

We’re super excited about this plan and look forward to sharing with everyone how they can get involved to get this long overdue investment in our city’s transit approved on the ballot. More people getting to the match in more ways will help reduce gameday traffic and put us on the path for a much more sustainable future.

- Charlotte, Sacramento, and St. Louis are all being pushed back a year. Austin is still go.
- A recap of the MLS is Back Tournament
- Shocking: Atlanta United winless. Zero goals, three 1–0 losses. Frank De Boer “mutually departs” club
- Dynamo concede 91st minute penalty to LA Galaxy, both teams eliminated with that result
- Best team left? LAFC strong case after finding a groove. Sporting KC is the bookies favorite to win, though largely because their bracket half is easier — much easier.
NWSL Updates
- NWSL Challenge Cup Recap — Champions Houston Dash. 2–0 win over Chicago Red Stars. First post-season appearance in club history and they won it all. PK goal in the 4th minute and clincher in stoppage time.
- Overwhelming favorite NC Courage shocked by 8 seed Portland in the first round with a 1–0 match
- Angel City FC is the other big NWSL news of the tournament
World Soccer Updates
- Liverpool received their title after thrilling 5–3 win over Chelsea last week. They’ll be joined by Manchester City, Manchester United, and Chelsea as next year’s Champions League entrants from England after United beat Leicester City on the final day of the year. Bournemouth, Watford, and Norwich relegated.
- Leeds United wins the Championship for a highly anticipated return to the Premier League. West Brom will join them. Biggest story though? Swansea City’s ability to overturn a six goal deficit to Nottingham Forest to snag the last playoff spot. It’s Brentford, Fulham, Cardiff City, and Swansea City in the playoffs for that promotion to the Premier League.
- Juventus took home their 9th straight Serie A title, though a bit later than expected. Inter Milan, Atalanta, and Lazio will be Italy’s representatives.

- General Tickets went on sale on Monday.
- North End stadium bar announced. Office space will now be stadium bar
- There will be 18 taps, 20 TV screens, a large video wall, and air-conditioning in the 400-person capacity space.

- Rodney Redes contributed to goal in Club Guarani’s 1–1 draw
- 1 year anniversary of Josh Wolff’s signing
- Davy Arnaud announced as assistant coach, reuniting with Josh and Claudio. Arnaud played for Sporting KC, Montreal, and DC United, and coached for DC United and was interim head coach at Houston after Wilmer Cabera’s resignation but before Tab Ramos. Played with Josh at SKC.

- Kicked off on June 27th with North Carolina beating Portland on CBS
- North Carolina dominating so far.
- Most exciting game was Houston’s 3-3 draw with Utah that they should have won if not for a mystery call by the referee negating what would have been their 4th goal.
- Dash recovered to take a 2-0 win against OL Reign on the 4th of July.
- Group stages end on July 13, but everyone will qualify for the knockout round, with the final on July 26th.
- All games on CBS All Access up until the final on CBS.
Major League Soccer Updates
- The MLS is Back tournament starts on the 8th (so by the time you’re hearing this, it should have kicked off)
- We say should, because FC Dallas has been withdrawn from the tournament due to a 10 players and one technical staff testing positive for Covid. Reports suggest that this was demanded by other teams and not a willing withdrawal.
- Thirteen players across the league tested positive, ten from dallas and three from two other teams. Nashville/Chicago postponed already.
- Schedule is fully out there. Best matches of the early round:
- Saturday at 7pm - Atlanta United and NYRB, our watch party on Zoom. Big boy FOX.
- Monday the 13th at 9:30pm - Galaxy/Portland on FS1
- Saturday the 18th at 9:30pm - LAFC vs LA Galaxy on ESPN
World Football Updates
- Liverpool takes the Premier League crown with second-place Manchester City’s loss to fourth-place Chelsea, where Christian Pulisic is becoming a key part of Chelsea’s late surge. Heading into Matchday 34, Chelsea have won 5 of their last 7.
- Fifth-place Manchester United is unbeaten in their last nine and is only two points behind Chelsea for that last Champions League spot.
- Real Madrid has a 4 point cushion atop the La Liga standings, with Barcelona dropping points at Atletico Madrid, Celta Vigo, and Sevilla since the restart. Real is perfect since play resumed. Four games left to play in Spain.
- Juventus look likely to secure their ninth consecutive Serie A title and have opened up a 7 point gap to second-place Lazio with 8 games remaining. Inter and Atalanta are all but assured Champions League qualification.

- Bayern Munich claim their 8th consecutive league title, besting Gio Reyna’s Dortmund to take home the Bundesliga. Gio did have a great assist in Dortmund’s 2–0 win over RB Leipzig for his first league start.
- Premier League is back, and started with a big whiff by the Goal Decision System in Villa’s 0–0 with Sheffield United.
U.S. Soccer Updates
- The United Soccer League Championship will be returning to action starting on July 11th. Schedule and venues to be announced, but Austin Bold FC, San Antonio FC, and El Paso Locomotive will be back in action.
- Major League Soccer is back on July 8th for the MLS is Back tournament. The full details on this event are on the MLS website.
- Austin FC is still on target as far as we know, with supporters tickets coming very soon.
