Season 4, Episode 2

Keep It Simple Sweetheart (KISS)

This popular phrase was coined by Kelly Johnson an engineer from Lockheed and used in the mid-1900s by mostly military personnel. Now often used in tech. industries and in advertising design. In non-commerce, it's heard as an off-the-cuff remark to express one's opinion that what is happening is too complex or "too much".

Simple vs. Easy article from Idea to Value Podcast by Nick Skillicorn

What is simple isn’t always easy.

Julie K. from Plan2Create is my planner GOALS! Or at least I really like her style. Form and function collide for a fantastic fusion of planner goodness. #colorcode

Season 4, Episode 1

It's the start of a solo season showcasing planner basics, product trends, pretty stuff, productive stuff, and more.

A recent trend I'm seeing is an oldie but a goodie yet it feels fresh and disruptive at the same time.

It's notepads!

  • Maybe notepads can be less fuss?
  • Maybe notepads can be cheaper?
  • Maybe we just want to rip out pages, crumple them in a ball, then light them on fire when the week is over?

Whatever the case, notepads are making their resurgence with style.

Wanna start a convo about notepads? Head to Planner Lifestyle fb group

The items featured in today's show (no affiliation or list order) are as follows:

Imperfect Inspiration (I AM planner notepad)

Page Eleven Paper Goods (Wake Up and Work Daily Notepad)

Beespoked (Tear off Notepads)

Project Functional Notepad by Recollections (8 1/2" by 11" notepad with no branding and light borders)

My guest says it so well... I am a business owner, wife, and mom to three boys. I have always wanted to own and grow a business, that is my first passion. My second passion is planning and knowing what I can do. Finally, my last passion would be learning and teaching history, especially American history.

I discovered goal planning just recently but it took me forever to find the right teacher and way. I am willing to figure things out and research until my answers are answered. Sometimes I go down the rabbit hole of researching and researching for hours at a time.

After finally having my first son, I got a degree in Business Management. Then I got my real estate license to see if I could do it and be a business owner. In my last year of being a realtor, I started a YouTube Channel called Working Mom Plans, tried to grow it but it didn’t feel like a good start. So earlier in 2020, I deleted that channel and created a new one, still using Working Mom Plans but as of June I finally changed it to something I feel is me. I am a nerd in many things, planning, computer games, books, learning everything, and crocheting.

The Fives: Enneagram + Planner Mashup Series

Brenna and Stacy share what life is like as an Enneagram Type 5, Analytical Investigator, and how it affects their planning lifestyle.

Brenna's Bio: Brenna on Instagram. She is one of the three leaders of planner event and online group, True North Trio MN

Stacy's Bio:

My name is Anastasia, Stacy for short. I am a wife of 10 years and a mom to three beautiful girls, 15, 9, and 3. I struggled with infertility with my first daughter and had my last at age 41. I am an accountant by trade but switched careers this year and now work as a Finance Product Owner over ERP and my accounting background has been especially useful in my new role. This new position was a good fit as part of the requirement is to be able to view my team’s workload from a 50,000-foot viewpoint and be able to see the projects that may come down the pipeline and align our time and efforts to support them.

I have been planning since grade school, like most planners, starting with school planners, then a Franklin Covey. In 2015, I discovered the Happy Planner while in my last semester of college, taking three classes and working full-time with a toddler at home.

My hobby is decorating my planner and memory planning, I am an OG scrapbooker. I also have a love for shopping and Starbucks, but desperately need to develop a love for budgeting!

Season 3, Episode 5

Nostalgia hits as Shae' reminisces about her planner journey from the early days of ordering KAD to the time she found Planner Kate.

Shae' is soon to drop a new podcast show of her own called But For Real, so naturally, we had to get real. We took the time to consider her cultural pressures to "be strong" as a black woman. She admits for one of the first times what she is grieving during this season and how she intends to use her pain to help others. She's an "imperfect person" and she thinks her planner should reveal that about her. Mistake? Slap a sticker on it.

Topics we cover:

  • Boxer dogs
  • Some shops: Libby & Co., KAD, Erin Condren, Planner Kate
  • Using a 1.0 white gel pen to cover mistakes (from According to Ali)
  • Making mistakes in your planner (spoiler alert - I can't use a correction tape roller to save my life)
  • Zoom and Skype Planner meetups during COVID
  • Her career as a math coach (She's has a National Board Certification in Education)
  • Flexibility with things you can't control
  • Using Empathy and avoided assumptions
  • Cultural pressures from childhood to be a strong black woman
  • How to work together as a couple in a relationship
  • It's okay to ask for help
  • How to be vulnerable and share your pain or walk with others in their pain
  • New podcast coming soon!
  • Her journey with infertility and hope for her future

My guest says it so well...

Hi, I’m Shae’… a 30 something wife, boxer dog mom to Lennox and Layla amongst many other things. Though I’ve been planning pretty much since middle school, I’ve been in the planner community for about 5 years though most don’t know me. That’s because I am an introvert that talks only when I have something to say.

When I’m not planning, I am a full-time Math Coach in the public-school setting. I was able to take the planning skills I’ve learned over the years into how I manage my schedule and time at work. With that, I’d say planning is much more than a habit for me. It’s a skill that has definitely helped me stay organized while allowing me to be creative. That’s one of the main reasons I enjoy the planner community.

It’s not only because I like planning, but mostly because I have found so much inspiration from the people in the community. There are some amazing people that bring so much positivity into the world through more than a planner.

My guest says it so well...

I'm Jenna or plan.pen.paint.parent on Instagram. I'm a wife and mom from East Texas and I also have 2 pups. I'll be celebrating 10 years of marriage this August with my husband Caleb, and our son will turn 5 in September. We live out in the middle of nowhere and LOVE it here! We both grew up in the country and wanted the same for our kiddo, so we bought some land in a tiny little town and built a home.

I'm a stay-at-home mom and venturing into homeschool this year for Pre-K. I have been planning and sticker obsessed since middle school and practicing hand-lettering since early 2017. I joined the planner community shortly after and finally feel like I'm finding my path and following my heart.

I'm newly into crystals for healing purposes and I like sharing little bits about them on my planner posts.

On Saturday, August 1st- November 2020, I will officially be part of The Prancing Doxie PR team by Sarah Horst. The brand new website goes live on August 14th. There is a link in my bio to the website (ThePrancingDoxie.com) where you can sign up for an account and shop to earn treats/points for her reward program. And if you use code JENNA15 you'll save 15% at checkout and get my cute sampler as a freebie.

My guest says it so well...

My name is Rachel. I started YouTube in 2012 as a hobby to do make-up videos and relax after work. I enjoyed my time doing that and interacting with the small community that grew around that channel. Around the time I started to drift away from being passionate about make-up tutorials I discovered the planner community and purchased my first Erin Condren planner.

As I became engaged with the planner community, I purchased my first Silhouette Cameo. My intention was to make stickers for myself, but with encouragement from my family, I decided to open an Etsy shop and list some of the stickers I had designed myself. That was in 2015.

Fast forward 5 years and Sticky Situations Co continues to grow year-over-year. It has pushed me to grow with my business and re-ignited my passion for YouTube as my channel transitioned from make-up to planners and lifestyle.

Season 2, Episode 29

Today's Guest:

Tabby Rivera, known as Productivity Muse, is a mom of three young, amazing adults, and one spoiled Yorkie called Luna. Tabby started her journey as a planner in 1995 with very conventional time scheduling methods but since then she has evolved her planning style to something that remains functional but shows-and-tells the story of her life.

In the adulting world, she is a Project Manager for a German software solutions company and manages worldwide e-commerce projects. Tabby also has been a Time (YOU) Management Mentor, a Certified Personal Organizer, and a Planner Event Coordinator. But that is not all of who she is because she also has an artsy side and creative flair that you just do not expect from someone who is so system driven.

During her planner evolution, Tabby has created Mrs. Pebbles (a planner sticker character) and founded both plannerDWEEB (one of the first planner communities in South Florida), and plannerTABLE (a vlog with a unique take on planners having a chat about ... well ... planners). Moreover, her passion lies in helping others get organized in a way that feels both natural and self-expressive.

That passion is what has prompted Tabby to create a social media presence, a blog, a website, a Facebook group, and workshops to share with the planner community her ideas and knowledge of how one can live an organized life that is full of color, fun, and personality.

My guest says it so well...

Hi, My name is Mari and I am a planner.

I am also a mom, a wife, a Controller, and an avid budgeter.

I started planning and journaling as a middle schooler and it has been something that I have never given up. Up to the year 2014, I was using standard planners (Erin Condren, Day Designers, etc) until I came across Ryder Carroll and his Bullet Journal Method and my life has been forever changed. I absolutely love the flexibility and freedom that a bullet journal gives.

In my spare time, I love to teach bullet journaling, create new functional spreads and my favorite is helping families create and stick to a personal budget that can help them reach their financial goals.

My guest says it so well...

I am a Florida girl who enjoys the beach, boating, and a slow-paced lifestyle. I work with my husband to manage two marinas, and we switch off working in our office and caring for our two toddlers. I joined the family business after having our first son because I wanted to spend more time with him.

Before this, I worked in cognitive psychology and had a job testing IQ. I really enjoyed doing research in this field, and I think this tendency has carried over into planners for me.

They are essentiallya way to collect data, and for some reason, I have the drive to do that. I was thrilled to discover the planner community as I was changing careers because it helped me find my way in new territory and connect with others that share this trait!

Besides planning, my other hobbies are reading (I love British and Chinese fiction) and journaling (I have kept a journal since age 7). I’m also a reality tv junkie!

My guest says it so well...

PlannerPolice started in 2015 as a total joke. People were saying in planner groups "Do what you want! There's no Planner Police."  LOL, so I started being PlannerPolice on Instagram.

I also used it as a way to call out shady shops, scammers, etc. Somewhere in there, it actually became a real planner Instagram, so I deleted all the old "tell on you" stuff.

I currently use a Hobonichi Weeks, and a pocket rings for budgeting.

-Chynna Mesich's Youtube video, "Why I didn't go to a planner meet-up for a year" a Planner Meetup 101 video

My future hopes to get a ticket to a new local event called, "12 Hours of Plannermas" hosted by the IG: @truenorthtrio

My guest says it so well...

I'm Shannon, the owner of Plan Your Spoons, a shop for planner supplies for chronic illnesses and disabilities and home to the Spoonie Chibis. I'm a wife, mom to a teenager and 3 cats, and a "professional patient" with my chronic illnesses and disabilities. I started my shop because I couldn't find the medical tracking stickers that I personally needed. I enjoy crocheting, reading, hanging out on the Marco Polo app with my planner buddies, and working on whatever random craft has caught my eye.

Season 1, Episode 26

Mari is a friend of mine from the planner group MN Planner Addicts. Being from Brazil originally, she tells us what it is like to be a planner enthusiast in a different social-economic culture where necessity is the mother of invention. Her mind is equal parts scientist (Vet researcher) and artist (Planner product designer).

We get to see a sneak peek of both halves of her brain and heart!

Contact Information:

Instagram: @doodlesdamari

Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/doodlesdamarichannel

My guest says it so well...

Hello, my name is Mari (short for Mariana) and I started planning consistently around 2015 when I forgot about an important appointment related to my Ph.D. and I realized I had too many things to keep up with to just rely on my memory. At that time I was mostly living for my Ph.D., working/studying day and night, and I felt like I needed a hobby that I could do anywhere and anytime.

So I started doodling, mostly by following Youtube tutorials, and I just loved it. I created my Instagram account and my Youtube channel mostly to see my improvement over time on my planning and doodling style but ended up finding a great community behind it and made lots of friends along the way.

Offering:

I have some product designs in collaboration with a few Brazilian stores for any Brazilian listeners, such as planner stickers, page markers, shaker dashboards, and more at Scraptrip (@scraptrip), vellums, and TN notebooks at Planning Ideas (@planningideas), I actually have my own planner clear stamp collection at Scraplooving (@scraploovingbyfran), and a few more planner stickers over at MyStickers (@mystickers.com.br). Most of these stores are not selling internationally as a standard option, but if there is anyone interested I would recommend messaging them and I’m sure they will be willing to find a way.

I am also at HelloKalon PR Team (@hellokalon), and for that, you can use my code DOODLE15 for 15% off for selected items plus an exclusive freebie.

I discover something I never knew before - hint- it's about his EDC in the What's in your Bag segment.

He breaks down: setting up sinking funds in Simple, working with paper vs. digital apps, and tracking your favorite meals when backpacking in the wilderness.

He's a real honey that makes me laugh every day. Everyday people! It's no wonder I have so many laugh "lines".

Besides using planners to manage my busy life, family, and job, I also use them to manage my Bipolar Disorder. Whoa! Don't hit the panic button or send your sympathy. I've actually learned to manage it well and I'm living a very full and wonderful life.

I have a husband, 6 kids, a full-time job, side-hustles, friends, and so much more. I love to travel, eat, and (of course) plan! I decided to use my online platforms to share my full and happy life, managing my mental health using planners, as well as some of the things I've learned on my journey. And what a journey it has been so far!

My guest says it so well...

I'm that person that can relate to anyone. I'm determined to make everyone my friend, although after 30 I learned the value of quantity over quality. I was that girl that was bullied by so many so I'm still always trying to fit in.

I want to do so by being of value and helping others. I really get true joy in helping others. I gain such a better version of myself with planning and I want others to share that experience. I started off making a local planner group to have more meaningful relationships with women. So we can talk about things other than me complimenting their jewelry or clothes. I really wanted to help them become better versions of themselves, have an artistic expression and girl time.

They pushed me to share my creativity online and that's where planning a better me came from. When I finally got the courage to post and create an Instagram account, I knew I wanted to eventually turn it into a brand. I studied user names and I saw that many were the person's name and plans and my name is too long for that. So I looked at ones where they had what they were planning like chaotic life or canceled plans. I thought about what I'm planning and my purpose and I realized it's a better me. We are always talking about being better versions of ourselves and without a plan how do we accomplish that. I did a thorough search and found no one else was using it online and so I made it mine. Being active on social media helps keep me accountable and from not giving up. Being a PR girl also keeps me accountable.

I'm an Interior and Graphic Designer and one of the avenues of my business is branding design for small businesses. I love that I can help women to support their families and make their dreams come true. I love finding women I connect with and helping them improve and market their business image. This was a perfect transition to being a PR girl. I love these women! We talk about business ideas and personal life and I really want to help them get sales. I don't want to be a salesy page so I try to make my posts informative and more tutorials than showing off hauls.

I told you I love connections and I wanted to build a positive and helpful brand so I started an Instagram talk show, which is on break right now and starting up again in January. I needed a break for me but I love chatting about useful topics and working on projects with phenomenal women.

Other things big in my life worth talking about are my husband having a heart transplant which was an experience that never ends, my love of self-care Sundays, being an on-call nanny which helps my desire to have children since I cannot with what's going on with my husband and my constant reorganizing and decluttering my life and hope trying to achieve success at being a better me.

My guest says it so well...

Hello, I’m Shay, and I’m a planner - a budget planner, mainly. I currently reside in Georgia with my husband. We met in my home state in November 2012, but he moved back home to GA after a year, and I later joined him in June 2015. I’d like to think it was one of the best decisions of my life. I’ve been able to finally focus on me, and I’ve grown so much. Our relationship has blossomed as well. We tied the knot in November 2016 and were eager to start our lives together.

One of the goals that we wanted to accomplish within our first year of marriage was paying down debt. Challenged with this new goal, I started searching for budget systems and budget techniques. While I explored online tools, I knew I wanted something tangible. After all, I’ve always been a pen and paper girl. That is when I discovered The Happy Planner. We began our debt pay-down journey in June 2017. We (well, I) started out with just a budget planner that I had created using bits from the HP. This new idea of budget planning was nothing short of amazing. I was having so much fun budget planning, and my husband was having so much success with budgeting because of it.

I began to share our results with others via pictures, but they requested more. I finally caved and started my YouTube channel, Shay Budgets, in August 2017. It’s been a wild ride, and I’ve met so many amazing and positive people who have supported my husband and me as we paid down debt. It’s been a little over a year now, and we have paid off a little over $33,000 of debt (mainly our car loan and credit cards). I have since explored other planning systems, such as fitness planning and memory planning, and I’ve tried other planners (i.e., Traveler’s Notebook and Erin Condren). Currently, I use a few ECs & HPs, and I’m loving every minute of it.

Season 1, Episode 12

Kristin Ann Pickett opens up about mentoring students, cooking at Thanksgiving, and traveling around in the planner community.

We reminisce about meeting each other at the MN Planner Addicts 2016 Summer Event - Planner Olympics.

My guest says it so well...

I moved a lot when I was younger, but grew up in Northern Wisconsin, and then moved to Indiana for my last 2 years of high school and then undergraduate and graduate school. I moved to Iowa in 2014, to be closer to my family in Wisconsin. I am a college professor and teach criminal justice and criminology. Classes like victimology, mental health & crime, serial killers & cults, and juvenile justice. I have degrees in criminal justice and criminology, political science, and psychology. I live with my fiancé and our two dogs, Maggie and Peach.

If you follow my IG you have probably seen our little family. I love planners (of course), stickers, wine, music, makeup, Angry Birds, organization, art journaling, photography, cooking, and reading. I have been in the planner community since … forever. Really, since I could write I was making to-do lists and doodling in my planner. I used to it track my dreams and goals, as well as my classes, sports, and all the clubs I was in. I’ve been in the actual online community since 2013.

I currently admin Planner Adventures on FB with my best friends. When I am not in there, you can find me in the local planner groups, Planners Gone Wild, Design Pandemonium, and Kitlife groups.

Season 1, Episode 11

Announcing the Grand Opening of a new Etsy planner sticker shop called Lemon and Honey Studio.

Owner/ Operator Pam Zais shares what led up to opening a shop and whose house she wants to move into just for the home decor.

My guest says it all so well...

Hi! I'm Pam. I live in Hastings, MN with my husband, two daughters, two rescue pups, and a beta fish named Timothy. I am a group fitness instructor at the YMCA in Hastings and teach HIIT, Strength, Stretch, Core, and Spin classes. You can often find me practicing new exercises in my kitchen. I love to go to the movies and concerts, listen to music way too loud, and binge-watch TV. My husband, Sean, is a Marine Veteran. He was an active duty Marine for 8 years stationed in Yuma, AZ the whole time. During those 8 years, he deployed overseas 3 times. Our girls, Hannah and Hailey, are in 2nd grade and Kindergarten. They keep us running around with swimming lessons, skating lessons, daisies, and brownies, but really, they like staying home and playing together best.

I have always loved doing crafty things, but often felt paralyzed while doing a project for fear of messing up. Planning has helped me get past that. You only look at your finished product for a few days, before you turn the page and get a chance to do something different. I started making stickers for my planner even before it arrived in the mail. (Remember when the EC ship times were excruciating?)

For me, making stickers is almost as much fun as the actual planning.
