Our freedom in Christ is given, but something that is often overlooked or even misunderstood is that it must be guarded. We have enemies that will oppose our freedom on a daily basis and our greatest enemy is that sinful, selfish, hardened, unrepentant, and un-surrendered version of ourselves. Through Galatians 5:13-26 we are going to allow the Apostle Paul to pastor us in how it is that we stay free from the power of the flesh.

God is good and He wants to bless our lives more than we want Him to but He simply won’t bypass what’s most important, which is our full allegiance to Him. How do we keep contending for His Kingdom to come and His will to be done on earth as it is in Heaven without giving up in the process? We find the answer to that question in Luke chapter 18 as Jesus tells His disciples a parable that illustrates the importance of persistent prayer. As you will see, the goal of persistent prayer is not merely that we pray a lot but rather it is the way we stay committed to and contending for the will of God to manifest in and through our lives.

There are seasons and situations in our life that cause us to clearly see we need more of God. We might even pray something like this; “Lord, I need more of You in my life.” Rather than asking God for more we should be asking, “Does God have all of me?” or “Am I fully surrendered to Him?” In our passage today we will learn from the Apostle Paul what it means to truly surrender your life to God both initially and in an ongoing way.

At this point in the Gospel of Mark, the religious leaders are doing everything they can to discredit and remove Jesus entirely. They approach Him with a number of difficult questions that touch on both political and theological issues. These questions have the potential to divide the crowd and pique the interest of Roman authorities implying that an insurrection is in the making. Jesus sees through their questions and communicates a powerful message that while we are responsible to many in this life, ultimately, we can only be loyal to one.

In Jesus' time, it was the religious leaders' duty to investigate the teachings and practices of other religious teachers. However, the fact that they could not discern Jesus as the true Messiah shows us that there was more going on spiritually than a general dullness of heart. Demonic power is alive and at work not only in the world but also in religious and even Christian circles in order to distort the truth and derail the church from the true mission of Jesus. What we observe in the religious leaders through this text is not far off from what can happen to us if we don’t stay humble before God and His Word.

As we have studied the book of Mark, we have seen very clearly that human beings have a tendency to take what God gives and make it something entirely different. There are many reasons for why this happens but the end result is a fruitless and even harmful form of religion that misrepresents God’s heart and misleads many who truly want to know Him.
