Afters: Recent Episodes

With life currently feeling like a weird parody of itself, the one constant we have is TV and Film. With how accessible new content is, you don't need to be a film critic to discuss the shows you love. Grab a glass of wine or cup of tea to listen to me chat to other non- experts about the stuff you love to watch, and join me for afters!

Welcome back to Afters! Tonight get ready to dissect the favourite films of your childhood- the Shrek films! After starting with the general history of how the Dreamworks films came to be, me and Ben get into a mildly heated debate about the rankings of all four Shreks. We will be attempting to answer why this film series is so universally loved by a wide audience and get into the good, as well as a few bad, moments from across the series. This has been my favourite episode so far so I hope you all enjoy this as much as we enjoyed planning/ recording it. So grab a drink and join me for Afters, cheers!

Here are some of the articles I used for my research but, once again, if you like the sound of what we talk about in this episode please go and have a look for yourself as there is lots of great content on this subject out there! (Also, a special shoutout to Ben who did so much of his own research!)

Welcome back to Afters! Tonight fill those cringe water bottles with booze because we are discussing Love Island! As well as having a tipsy chat about the best moments from the show, me and Helen get down into the unavoidable issues with the show that reflect some of our society's darkest sides. We will be attempting to answer the age old question of whether such a toxic show should be cancelled when it is such good telly, and if all of their issues with representation can be fixed or whether the nature of the show is flawed itself. We had so much fun recording this so forgive me for the longer episode (I promise I cut a lot of the drunk rambles and left the best ones). So grab a drink and join me for Afters, cheers!

For episode three I am joined by Katie and Vicky to discuss why the BBC thriller has captivated such a wide audience. The original season was written and created by Phoebe waller Bridge, writer and star of Fleabag, and it follows the chase between an MI6 agent and female assassin, and then their consequent odd relationship. We discuss the writing and success of each season before breaking down what is unique about this show- so make sure you catch up on season three before you tune in! All three seasons are available on iPlayer, so hopefully out enthusiastic reviews inspire you to watch/ rewatch it. If you like this style of reviewing a particular show, and the same goes for if you didn't like it! Let me know what you thought over on my instagram.

For the second episode of Afters, I am joined by fellow History student Tom to discuss whether historical accuracy is necessary for historical films (our answer may surprise you). We use 1917 as our main example, an amazing thriller that came out earlier this year depicting a crucial 24 hours in the late stages of World War One. A few of the other historical productions we mention are; Dunkirk, Gladiator, Kings Speech, Darkest Hour and Rome so give those a watch if you haven't already! Here are some of the articles I used for this research but, once again, if you like the sound of what we talk about on this episode please go and have a look around yourself as there is lots of interesting content on this subject out there!

For the first episode, I am joined by Georgie to discuss the battle of the Biopics! We discuss the 2018 film 'Bohemian Rhapsody' about Queen frontman Freddie Mercury and the 2019 film 'Rocketman' about Elton John.

As well as discussing many aspects of both films including their general enjoyability and overall cinematic experience, we also talk about the representation of sexuality on screen and the response this has caused. I have attached some of the articles I used for this research below, but would recommend delving further into this yourself as there are many layers to it which are definitely worth taking into account if have seen the films.
