The boutique fitness industry is BOOMING right now! In the InJoy Studio Ownership podcast we sit down with studio owners and discuss the ups and the downs of what it takes to create and sustain successful fitness studios. We cover all manner of topics from start-up, hiring, firing, and difficult client interactions. All of this is in effort to help inform and encourage future studio owners across the world that YOU CAN DO IT!

We are BACK with Domini Anne today discuss how to set boundaries with those "difficult" clients. Because you can't fire every client who rubs you the wrong way sometimes! That's no way to run a business. So how can we as trainers empathize with our clients who are presenting us with behaviors we don't like while also staying true to our own boundaries in such a way that honors the client and ultimately maintains the client/trainer relationship?? Tune in to find out!

The name of the game in small business is PIVOT! And while we have talked about the major pivot in 2020 due to Covid, what about the pivot we are making now? Welcoming students back into the studio is different. There is no denying that. So how can we as business owners and teachers hold space for those coming back while also maintaining healthy boundaries for ourselves.

Today's episode is a doozy! Eric and I have been emailing back and forth for awhile now discussing many of the things that go unsaid in the fitness industry world. The conversation was so good I insisted he come on the podcast to help me bring some of these topics to light. Like, what it ACTUALLY takes to build a sustainable business (hint it's not hiring crazy outrageous expensive mindset coaches ;) Why we need to be more transparent as business owners on how our support systems are critical to our studio's success and why empathy training should be apart of basic teacher trainings moving forward.

Hi everyone and welcome back to season 5 of the podcast where Shea Keats and I dive deep into specific topics related to owning and thriving in boutique fitness studio ownership! On today's episode of the podcast we talk about all the things you need to research before opening up your business like how do you want to be classified legally, what the pros and cons of home studios versus commercial spaces, equipment purchases, and what needs to be part of your BOE or Base Operating Expenses.

We know that with everything going on in the world right now with Covd-19 having shut so many studio's down that this episode may not seem very relevant, but we believe now is actually a perfect to time pause and really consider these questions OR if you are already in business reflect on how you may want to pivot or change aspects in your business when we come out of this on the other side.

We are here for you! We are rooting for you! You are doing a good job! Love, Emily and Shea

Welcome back to a brand new season of the podcast! This season is a bit different in that it will not be an interview based season and is instead a topic based season. Fellow business partner and business coach Shea Keats and I deep dive into all the important topics we believe you need in not only starting and operating a boutique fitness studio, but to THRIVE while doing so.

Disclaimer! Shea and I recorded all the episodes for this season in January/February of this year...BEFORE all the shit hit the fan with the corona virus outbreak that has been wrecking our worlds. However, we still feel the topics covered are relevant and are potentially even MORE powerful as we know many of you listening will be in a rebuilding phase when this is all said and done. We are here to support you no matter where you are in your ownership journey!

So here we go friends! Episode one of season five! Finding you why, and why it is more important than you think.

In this episode you will learn how Jamila embraces the "IC" life!  You will walk away with practical tips and strategies on how to make your teaching business work for you AND the studios you teach in.  Lots of GOLD in this one today!

Welcome back to season 3!!  We opening up this season with a story that I think many of our listeners will relate to...the home studio!

Kim's entrepreneurial journey is similar to many boutique fitness studio owners out there.  She had the bustling studio, the recession forced a down-sizing, then a job relocation had her in a brand new town starting completely over.  Throw on top of that everything had to be put on hold while she walked with her son through the recovery of a traumatic accident.

I hope you'll take a listen and feel encouraged by Kim's story of perseverance!  And remember, your home studio IS a real studio.  :)

Please welcome to the podcast today Lauren Childs owner of Ebb and Flow Movement Studio in Charlotte, NC!

Lauren got real with us today and on the pod and I couldn’t be happier with the way this episode turned out. Her story I am sure is very similar to many of us out there. She started off as a teacher doing the hustle to make ends meet. She then relocated and had to start all over. And then, while right in the beginning phases of her opening her dream studio - tragedy struck.

I hope you will take a listen and feel encouraged by Lauren’s story of perseverance and hope. Love, Emily

On today's episode of the podcast I am thrilled to FINALLY introduce you to my friend Bre Dumke Helfrich who owns Enroute Movement in Salt Lake City, Utah!

Bre's story is truly unique and inspiring. While overcoming a traumatic mountaineering accident Bre was introduced to Pilates and then later found her way to the GYROTONIC EXPSANSION SYSTEM®. Much different from other studio owner's stories it wasn't love at first sight! Bre came to these modalities with an academic's brain and love of research and so sometimes things got lost in translation. However, Bre was able to recognize that these modalities were helping and she was too curious not to figure out why! She is a self proclaimed "Curious Nerdy Jock." It fits her to a T!

I hope you'll tune in and find encouragement from Bre's story and know that even in the dark times there is something to be learned and it's never too late to go after the things that light your soul on fire!

Burnout.

No matter how many mani/pedis, bubble baths, or massages we get we will all run into this problem if we are in the healing business long enough. We give of ourselves day in and day out and rarely stop to think about how this may be affecting not just ourselves, but those closest to us.

I am SO thrilled Heather Glidden has written about this topic and is sharing her insights with us for FREE! Her love for this community and her desire for ALL of us to THRIVE in our healing businesses is tangible and authentic. Emma however, has been able to navigate these waters with grace.  I am so grateful that she came on the podcast to share with all of you her story as I know many of you can relate!  Connect with Emma in the links below!  INJOY!

2018 has been a doozy of year for me both personally and professionally...and it isn't even over yet!

On the season 1 wrap up of the podcast I open up about a deeply hurtful experience I went through earlier this year that really was the catalyst for the creation of this podcast.  Be prepared for some tears!

I also go into what is was like hiring my first studio assistant, how I handled the flooding of my studio, my first teacher training experience AS THE TEACHER TRAINER, and the business model that works best for myself and my studio.  Did I mention that this year has been a doozy???

I hope this episode brings you hope and encouragement!  We will be back with Season 2 in November!  As always...

Meet Anne of GYROTONIC® St. Louis Central!

Anne and I have never had the pleasure of meeting in person, but after this call I can't wait to have real life sit down together to chat more!  The thing I really appreciate about Anne is her honestly.  Authenticity is a rarity these days and it is so refreshing to meet like-minded studio owners who aren't afraid to just tell it like it is!

One of the biggest takeaways I hope you learn from Anne today is that becoming a good teacher TAKES TIME!  In a world full of instant gratification this is a hard truth to swallow.  Especially in the service industry when want to be the best teachers we can be to our beloved clients.

I couldn't wait to get Dr. Justine Bernard-Edwards on the podcast!  Not only does she have her PhD is physical therapy from Columbia University she is also a GYROTONIC® Master Trainer.  Her depth of knowledge on movement and healing is profound.  I know personally because I took her GYROTONIC® applications course for Osteoporosis!  Highly recommend.  :)

Meet Billy!

When I first reached out to Billy to see if he would be on the podcast he said, "SURE!" and then, "What's a podcast?" :p

Billy is a GYROTONIC® Master Trainer and a studio owner in NYC for 20 years.  I think it goes without saying that to make it in a city like NYC for that long is quite an accomplishment!

I think the biggest takeaway from Billy's interview today is that the main ingredient you need to make it in this business is PASSION.  Period.  Billy's passion for the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® is tangible and it's what has pulled him and his business through the tough times.

It's HERE!!

This may be one of the most anticipated interviews on the podcast yet! Meet Lisa Lansing!

Lisa is the owner of Inspiral Motion in Cleveland, OH. A studio that is close to my heart because it is the first job as a movement teacher I ever had. That means Lisa was my first "studio boss." She is also the first person to ever FIRE me. Yes. That happened. And when I asked Lisa if she would be on the podcast to talk about this she jumped at the chance! YES!

You see our story is one of reconciliation and mutual love and respect. I think most of the time in our industry relationships break and we think they are beyond repair. We are here to tell you that that doesn't have to be true!! If BOTH parties involved can dig deep and truly value the other person then it is possible to forgive and move forward.

We also dive deep into what it takes to create and sustain a positive culture in your studio. Creating an environment where both teachers and clients feel loved and can thrive takes intentional action. It does not happen on its own and we discuss some practical steps you can do to move in that direction.

I hope you INJOY this episode of the podcast!

Please welcome Kathy Van Patten to the podcast today!

Kathy has always been a teacher, but she didn't come into the world of pilates and GYROTONIC® teacher until later in her life.  Even so she has owned and sold multiple studios throughout her career including GYROTONIC® Boston, GYROTONIC® Pacific Heights (now the Seed Center) and now she currently owns and operates GYROTONIC® Healdsburg.

Kathy takes us on her journey from teacher, to movement teacher, to studio owner, to master movement teacher in this episode.  We also discuss the difficult balance of putting in the hard work and knowing when to let things move organically on their own.  We also discuss the ingredients that make up the best movement teachers and how Kathy balances owning her current studio with her extensive teacher trainer travel schedule.

Kathy spoke some wonderful words of encouragement to me back in 2013 that I have held onto ever since.  I was so excited when she accepted my invite to be on the podcast because I knew she would provide the same encouragement to you!

Please welcome Joel Crosby to the podcast today!

Joel and I met at a classical pilates continuing education course years ago and have kept in touch via social media ever since.  Sometimes those platforms can be pretty great huh?

I wanted to bring Joel onto the podcast for several reasons.  1.) He has been able to run a successful pilates studio that supports his entire family for 15+ years.  2.) His studio is truly a family run business. 3.) He has done extensive training over the last several years in the classical pilates method with legend Jay Grimes.  4.) He's a super nice guy and would never call attention to himself, so I'm gonna do it for him!  :)

We talk about all of the above and then some!

Meet Grace Parra!

Grace and I met because we have bumped into each other several times over the years at classical pilates workshops throughout NC over the years.  We were instant friends!

I am so excited for you to hear her story of how she has been able to successfully blend her classical pilates style of teaching into a studio that was predominately contemporary.  She then goes into detail on how that was so successful she was invited into co-ownership!

Other topics we dive into include hiring, non-competes, and veganism.  :) .

What I love about Grace is how she is able to hold true to the things that are important to her while never coming off as judgmental or snotty towards others whose values may differ from hers.  She is a shining example of unconditional love and I can't wait for you to listen!

Meet Brooke Tyler!

Brooke is the owner of Clasique Acupuncture and Pilates in Asheville, NC. I was so pleased she agreed to come on to the podcast to chat with me even though 1.) we have never actually met in real life and 2.) this podcast was/is unknown!

You see, Brooke is a VERY busy woman. She has grown her brick and mortar studio from a 500sq/ft space to a 4,000sq/ft stand alone building with a full staff. She also just launched an online pilates subscription platform call CoreSelf. Oh, and she is a momma to two little ones! If that isn't the picture of a successful female entrepreneur then I just don't know what else is!

The thing I think I appreciate the most about this interview is Brooke got real. Like, REAL real. Being a successful business owner takes hard work and when life happens along the way...things get messy and break. We like to focus on only the good things, but Brooke takes the time to talk about how the broken moments are opportunities to dig deep and find your true self and strength. Without the broken moments we can't rise up to become who we were truly meant to be.

So I hope you'll take a moment out of your busy day to take in all the words of wisdom from my new friend Brooke Tyler!

I was so excited when my friends and colleague, Matt Skelly, agreed to come on the podcast!

You see, Matt owns a personal training gym here in town.  NOT a pilates studio.  But the truth is our businesses and the struggles we face are not all that different.  As a matter of fact, our philosophies are perfectly aligned and it is why over the years we have been able to maintain a great business relationship.

Networking with other fitness modalities in your area can only HELP your business!

Matt has been able to maintain incredible relationships not only with his clients (retention rate 95%!) but with his trainers and the fitness community at large.  He truly is the nicest guy ever!

So meet Matt!  I know you'll gain a ton of insight and wisdom for your studio regardless the modality you teach.

Meet Lori Shipp!

Lori and I have been "pilates besties" for many years now so it was a no brainer that she be on season 1 of the podcast.

Lori and I talk regularly on the phone so in this episode you will get a little glimpse of what it's like into our chaotic and sometimes off the rails conversations.  Thank God for editing!  :)

In this episode we talk about some of the struggles of what it's like being a classical pilates studio in an industry that is constantly changing.  How do we remain true to what our vision and values are, while also staying open to new possibilities?

We also dive into what happens when illness strikes.  How do we still take care of our clients while also taking of ourselves?

The biggest take-away from this episode for me is...

Owning a boutique fitness studio is hard...

Co-owning a studio can be even harder, and yet Trey Fry and Meg Hopkins of Kinetic MKE seem to have sailed through their first year in business together.

*How to identify your strengths and weaknesses so you know where your specific talents can best serve the business.

*The most important factors to look for when brining on new teachers and staff.

*Why keeping your marketing strategies client centered is KEY to brining in your ideal client.
