Tiffany Sayers, Los Angeles based recording artist and songwriter, is my guest on this episode of the podcast.

Listen in as we chat about staying connected with your audience and recording during the pandemic, licensing music for television and film, balancing a 9-5 and an active music career, how to shift our mindset from full-time work to our creative projects, the importance of meditation to set ourselves up for the day, and how we can create and utilize our industry relationships to grow our careers.

Tiffany’s latest single, Trippin’ Over You, is now available on streaming platforms.

Quotes that stood out:

  • “It really comes down to being pretty disciplined. You have to say no to some things.”
  • “I was pretty much doing everything on my own as far as booking shows and promoting and ads. It's just it's really tough to do all that on your own.”
  • “I would just say that anyone you know, who has experienced that is to not let that get you down and keep pushing and know who you are and know your worth. Anyone that's going to be blocking opportunities for you because you're a woman or any other reason isn't somebody that you want to be working with anyways.”

Singer-songwriter and guitarist Natasha Meister from London, Ontario is my guest on this episode of the podcast. She has over ten years of experience in the industry, much of it spent in South Africa.

Natasha had a very grassroots mindset about her career, often finding gigs by walking into venues and performing a short set for them. She was the first female artist in South Africa to be endorsed by Fender, and opened for the Pixies and LIVE with her band The Sweet Resistance.

Listen in as we chat about what did to move her career forward without live performances, how she started her music career in South Africa, and why it’s important to learn the business side of the industry.

Her recent release, Diamond Kiss, is now available on all streaming platforms.

Quotes that stood out:

  • “You just own it and be comfortable and confident in your own skin. And people feed off of that.”
  • “It's easy to disappear during these times and close up and not be anywhere to be found. But I think if you want to maintain that fan base and let them know you're still around and you're gonna get out there once things are better then they'll stick with you on your journey.”
  • “The business side of music is way more complicated than I ever actually realized. A piece of advice would be to learn about the business side of it because I know being creative as we are most of the time, we don't want to learn about that.”
  • “You can't have the creative side without the business side. You can be the most talented person, but if you don't have the team, or if you don't have the knowledge yourself you're just gonna get lost in the noise.”

Journalist and spiritual advisor Jazmin Kylene is my guest on this episode of the podcast. She started her career in journalism, interviewing artists and celebrities, and transitioned into a conscious media journalist and spiritual counselor.

Jazmin is the founder of La Li Luna TV, a platform for people all over the world to connect, express, and feel seen in a conscious manner. When she couldn’t find a platform to facilitate her voice in the way she wanted it to come out, she took the risk and launched her own platform.

Listen in as we talk about taking risk, spirituality and reiki, being a woman in media, and the power of collaborative networks.

Quotes that stood out

“It's scheduling in time for yourself and prioritizing that as much as you would work or an interview or a one on one session. It's really important that if you are going to be pouring into anybody else's cup, that yours is full as well.”

“Having your tribe of supportive women around you, who are going to share resources and just uplift you has been such a catalyst for me getting to where I am, and staying somewhat sane through it.”

“I take a lot of inspiration out of experience. And from all of the people that I see around me that inspire me and motivate me and I make sure that when I am on social media, I'm following people that are posting things of substance and things that do make me think and inspire my mind.”

“We're really stepping back into a space of collaboration and supporting people again. Supporting on a smaller scale, whether that's local businesses or small entrepreneurs.”

“We've taken back the power of what networking is and we've made it more human.”

Country-pop recording artist and multi-passionate entrepreneur, Crystal McGrath, from Calgary, Alberta (my hometown!) is my guest on the podcast this week.

We had a great chat about mindfulness and burnout, pivoting during the pandemic, finding the right time to release music, her podcast and Instagram live projects, overcoming fear and nerves, women in country music, her program Artist Wellness, and so much more!

Crystal released her latest single “Game on” in September and launched her Artist Wellness program at the end of December 2020.

And one serious question before we go...have you ever heard of the Calgary Stampede? Let us know in this quick survey!

Quotes that stood out:

  • “I just love hearing people's stories. Everybody has something different to say even though you know, their stories can be very similar, but very, very different at the same time.”
  • “That's what makes us cool individuals is that we all do suffer. And we all do shine and sharing both sides of that, I think is really important.”
  • “Anytime I get freaked out, it's like, let's come to the why, why? Why are you doing this? Because you hate it? No, because you love it. And when you come back to that love, it kind of washes away the fear.”
  • “We do have some choice in the matter. We choose if we want to live in fear, if we want to live in love. And choosing that love path doesn't mean it's easy, doesn't mean you're not going to have bad days or hard days or hard times. But you do have that choice.”
  • “I just really feel like as a female working in the music industry, or any industry, see yourself as an equal and move through it as an equal. And when you have that mindset, I just really feel like there's no limitations, and there's no blocks. And don't ever let yourself think you can't do something because you're female, don't think you're not good enough. Don't think you don't have enough strength or support or, or any of those things. I think just put your boss hat on and go after it.”
  • “You can’t have a manager until you know how to manage yourself.”

Kendra Chantelle is my guest on this episode of the podcast. She’s a singer, songwriter, vocal coach from Nashville, Tennessee.

Listen in as we talk about how Kendra was ahead of the remote work revolution, how her vocal business helped her improve her craft and vice versa, how she developed her business with feedback from her community, her opportunity to record a song for a Netflix documentary, and the importance of developing your own networking style.

Her new release Carousel is available on all music streaming platforms!

Quotes that stood out

“I feel like having this business has really just leveled me up with my craft. I'm just like, really plugged into the type a part of my brain and the creative part of my brain.”

“You attract the clients that you need to be working with because they bring something to you too, and vice versa”

“I've taken it upon myself to just really establish and embody, like clear boundaries, and just try to conduct myself with business forward presence. And if I ever feel like someone crosses a line 10 years ago, I might have just thought it was weird and not really gone there. But now I just, I call it what it is.”

“There are negatives about social media and being so plugged in, but if you can use it and not let it use you, it's an amazing tool.”

“Networking is important, but I think also finding a version of it that works for you is equally as important.”

“Realize that the other women around you with your same skill set are not your competition. You are your only competition. And the women around you that are doing the same thing as you, they're your allies, like you're all on the same team.”

“It's just really important to not be threatened by the people in your city or in your community that are doing the same things.”

Mindy Pack is my guest on this episode of the podcast. She’s a vocalist, vocal coach, vocologist, songwriter, and mom to three kids and two dogs.

We chat about how she started her career as a vocal coach, what laryngeal manipulation is, why she became an ordained minister, developing a vocal app, and all the other projects she’s working on.

Mindy also recently released a holiday single, Shine for Me Again, Star of Bethlehem, which is available on music streaming platforms. You can also purchase her product, Vocal Straw, for 10% off with the code brokenglass10!

Quotes that stood out:

  • “The more knowledge you have, the more power you have in yourself”
  • “Don't be afraid to put yourself out there. Like you got to do it. Like the worst thing that can happen is somebody can say no, but if you believe in yourself and you believe in the product that you're putting out, why wouldn't you do it?”
  • “Don't live out of fear. And don't let anybody control anybody's thoughts or opinions, opinion control what you know, you need to do, or who you are as a person. Don't let anybody have that power.”
  • “Invest in yourself, if you don't invest in yourself, how is somebody else going to invest in you?”
  • “Love the process, not the result. When you love the process of everything, the results will always happen. But it's not the result. Because when you audition for something, you're going to get told no more than you're going to get told yes. But if you love the hustle, if you love work, if you love putting it together, if you love that energy, you will have success. The minute you stop loving the process is the minute you need to reevaluate.”

Producer, musician, and podcaster Caitlin Dee is my guest on the podcast this week. She’s the co-host of the podcast, Goth Yearbook After hours, a former member of LA-based band Pipe Dreams, and a talented massage therapist.

Listen in as we talk about how she got her start in music, how she was able to take advantage of lockdown to improve her skills and pivot her business, why we need to take a break from our hustle, and how she keeps strong as a female in a male-dominated industry.

Quotes that stood out

  • “So much creativity is born of limitation and it’s called ‘playing music.’”
  • “There are advantages to being a woman in the industry now. It’s definitely more coveted as far as diversifying a line-up, and people are more interested in female-driven projects right now than ever before.”
  • “You have your day job and then you make music as well. You do the thing you love, but then you never have a day off.”
  • “You teach to learn - the idea is you don’t have to be the utmost expert, and in fact, being less than that is going to make you more relatable for someone who knows nothing.”
  • “I try to get feedback from people, but you can’t just change everything about yourself that people want you to change.”

Dr. Tish Oney - singer, songwriter, musicologist, and author - is my guest on this episode of the podcast. With a focus on jazz and vocal pedagogy, Dr. Oney taught at universities and conferences, wrote articles for well-known publications, and will be releasing a book on jazz vocal pedagogy in 2021.

While pursuing her Doctor of Music Arts degree at the University of Southern California, Dr. Oney launched a project on Peggy Lee that brought her work forward. She’s recorded an album of Lee’s songs, Dear Peg, as well as a few of Lee’s previously unrecorded songs on her album, The Best Part.

Listen in as Dr. Oney and I talk about her start in music, Peggy Lee’s life and how she’s inspired by her career, and the multitude of projects she works on (and how she keeps it all together!).

Quotes that stood out

  • “We all come from pioneers who’ve gone before us”
  • “Most people’s opinion is that to be good at anything, you have to push aside everything else and focus on one thing. But for me, having a lot of gifts and talents that I pour time and energy into really helps all of them create something special altogether.”
  • “Everybody’s talent is not going to be like mine and I find that refreshing.”
  • “They say success is the best payback for someone who’s tried to sabotage you. The more successful you are the less that person has any power over you or your destiny”
  • “Humilty is an important character additive that we all need. The more we have the more people will admire your excellence.”

We discuss how she manages both, how she creates opportunities for herself, and her best advice for anyone looking to start in creative industries.

Quotes that stood out

  • “When a door would close, which many closed, I just thought ‘okay, well, if they’re not going to give me an opportunity then I’m going to create the opportunity myself’”
  • “Look for independent companies. They’re more willing to work with someone that’s starting out versus one that’s established”
  • “Just reach out. You never know the answer.”

Sarah has collaborated with several internationally known DJ’s and has toured the world playing music.

In this episode, we talk about her journey, how important it is to understand when you need help in your career, reaching her audience while staying home during the pandemic, the changes the industry might be facing, and how she’s managed to be a mother in an industry that doesn’t lend itself well to motherhood.

Quotes that stood out:

  • “People want the visual experience. They want to see what they’re hearing...I think that’s really cool and I think that if an artist can take what they’re doing and put it in front of you visually, it just enhances the experience to be more full and more rich.”
  • “I think it’s equally important to know what you’re good at and what you’re not good at, and being able to hire the person that you know will do a good job.”
  • “Being aware and having a business plan in mind is the most important thing for a musician.”
  • “The more present you can be on social media during these sort of uncertain times, the busier you’re going to be when this all comes to an end and things can reopen...it’s really important to stay present.”

JUNO wears many hats in her music career, and in this episode of the podcast we dive into how she got her start in music, her experiences touring the world with amazing musicians, her album Help Is Not on the Way, and JUNO’s Guitar School.

We have a great discussion about the Black Lives Matter movement, how important it is for everyone to educate themselves, and how JUNO uses her voice and her guitar school to create positive opportunities, to bridge the gap with mentorships and community.

JUNO has some incredible stories to tell with an empowering message, so be sure to listen to this episode from start to finish.

And be sure to give her album Help Is Not on the Way a listen!

Quotes that Stood Out:

  • “I think a lot more women need to step up and own their music and learn the instrument, learn how to use logic and Pro Tools, learn how to edit yourself. You know what I'm saying? Because we don't need all the stuff we have. And I think that's what the quarantine has really taught us.”
  • “You know, but telling a story, to me is the most important part of my music, because I feel like everything else is just making noise. But when I'm telling a story, I feel like I'm leaving something behind that's valuable.”
  • Playing for celebrities has been awesome. But it's not the most valuable thing I've done. And I always tell people that because it's important. Your goal if you can be whatever you want to be right in your community that will expand and grow.”
  • “It’s not about me, and that’s the point. If everyone can say that, “it’s not about me” it’s about the whole. And if we can all get on...how can we be on the same level? And to me, that’s what the Black Lives Matter music is about.”
  • “You can’t really change someone else. But you can be an example of what change looks like. And I think that's the most effective thing that we can do.”

Have you ever lost your creativity without reason? Have you sat at a blank computer screen, not knowing what to write, to design, to record?

You’ve probably heard the term “burnout” in the news lately. It’s now an official syndrome per the World Health Organization, but while many of us probably imagine burnout as something physical, it can also be mental, or both.

In today’s episode, I talk about my own mental burnout, what fueled it, and how I pulled myself out and got my creativity and inspiration back. Listen in if you’re feeling burned out too, and maybe what worked for me might work for you.

Mission. Vision. Core values.

That sounds like a lot of business talk, but the truth is all three of these concepts can be applied to our personal lives, our dreams and career goals, and to our own businesses.

It was’t until a business course prompted me to draft the mission, vision, and core values for Broken Glass Media that I really took a good hard look at the path we took since the blog launched in January 2018, and the future we had set out for ourselves. I looked back at the initial why of the business and my own personal why, and our mission, vision, and core values grew from there.

Everything produced from Broken Glass Media will come from those three solid statements and lists, and today’s episode is a look into our mission and what we’re planning for the rest of 2019. Listen in to hear where our why and mission developed from, what our mission is, and how we’re setting out to keep in line with it.

Today’s episode is with Lindsay Artkop, Berklee College of Music graduate, professional drummer, and drum instructor. We dive into how she started in music, her experiences as a professional drummer, how winning the Hit Like a Girl competition changed the trajectory of her career, and how she’s built up her own business teaching students locally and across the world.

"It's shifting to a place where we can value people's music and their art just as much, and hopefully more than their looks"

"Make sure that it's something that you really, really want more than anything and know that it's a trade-off."

"You have to learn from experience"

Do you hustle all day, every day to make it in the industry?

Are you exhausted, both mentally and physically?

Do you find that you're dragging yourself from meeting to meeting, networking event to networking event unable to focus?

The hustle of the music industry can definitely take its toll, especially on us women. I’ve been there, working full time, enrolled in a grad program, attending network opportunities, and even interning to get myself out there. I was dragging, had gained weight, and was not sleeping well. It wasn’t until I reached the end of my grad program that I realized something had to change.

I started to really analyze my personal wellness, particularly in four pillars of wellness:

  • Mindset
  • Fitness
  • Nutrition
  • Time Management

In today’s episode, I go through each of these pillars to discuss small, simple changes that I made for an incredible impact on my overall wellness. And today I’m feeling stronger, more energized, and ready to take on any challenge that comes my way.

If you’re ready to take managing your own personal wellness a step further, join the Managing Personal Wellness 5 Day Challenge at www.brokenglassmediallc.com/managingpersonalwellness. Starting on March 11 you’ll receive 5 days worth of my favorite tips and tweaks to manage my personal wellness including: mindset, fitness, nutrition, and time management.
