As a result of the re-gathering and reuniting of the remnants from Israel and Judah, the Gentiles would then be brought into God’s salvation. They weren’t seeking covenant membership. But they “attained” it. Israel pursued righteousness, and covenant membership, but they never arrived at it. "Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as if it were based on works." (Rom.9:32) So Paul takes two verses from Isaiah—both of them very familiar to the Jews—and combines them to show that Jesus is both a stumbling stone and a cornerstone.

God's promise was never meant to be realized in the nation as a whole. God's promises were always limited, they were to the true, spiritual Israel—the children of promise. But it is not as though the word of God has failed. For they are not all Israel who are descended from Israel; Romans 9:6. To understand what Paul is saying we need to realize that there is a distinction between "Jews" and "Israel". When the Bible talks about Jews, who is it referring to?

The Apostle Paul is defending God's covenant faithfulness. Many questions were to arise and arguments to be had that he anticipated. Paul doesn't launch into a great legal debate here, he simply quotes the Scripture. The Jews would have trouble arguing with their own Scripture.

This whole problem of whether God is being faithful to His covenant with Israel in the work of Christ is what Paul is now dealing with in Romans 9-11. Israel's lack of faith on the part of some does not mean, then, that God's promises that were entrusted to them have failed.
Paul is going to teach us that God's promises have not failed, they were misunderstood! Paul explains how they were misunderstood. "For they are not all Israel who are descended from Israel" I can't emphasize how important this verse is, we must understand this. This verse is the key to understanding Israel and the promises of God.

Paul says the ultimate proof that God will not be swayed in His support for us is seen in His willingness to put Christ on the cross for our sake. Now, the seven things Paul lists are an inventory of what the Lord experienced on the way to the cross. He endured all these things for our sake. Before Paul even introduces the subject of his next discussion, he affirms that he is telling the truth. "I am telling the truth"--is a claim to personal honesty. Paul was looked upon by the Jews as an enemy, a traitor. He wants them to know that he cares for them. "In Christ"--in my conscience, I am in union with Christ, and I declare He is my witness, my life. He's calling on Christ to witness the honesty of his claim.

Verses 29-30 are often called the "Golden Chain of Salvation," or the "Ordo Salutis" which is Latin for "the order of salvation," which deals with the logical sequence of steps or stages involved in the salvation of a believer, and, more importantly, it has to do with who made the first move in our salvation, God or man?

There is a traditional view and other views for this section of text. The arguments in the commentaries boil down to whether this text deals with rational or irrational creation. We will start by looking at what would be seen as the non-traditional way of interpretation within the context of many wordings and phrases used in this letter. Then we go over the traditional view as well for it holds application to our lives today.

In this text, the contrast is the Old and New Covenants. When Paul "according to the flesh," he is talking about those who are members of the body of Adam/Moses, which is the body of sin and those who are members of the body of Christ.

For Paul, "sin dwelling in me" and "evil lies close at hand" are the consequence of Adam's offspring. It is relational. We were born outside the covenant with God, which man was created to enjoy, and into a covenant of sin and death. The consequence of Adam's disobedience was universal, as all his decedents were driven out of God's presence with him.

We first revisit verses 5 and 6 to further understand the meaning of "in the flesh" and then Paul will exonerate The Law as being identical to sin. The next point for us to understand today is just what or who is Paul speaking about for the rest of this section. Some believe Paul is describing the normal Christian experience.
To say that Paul describes a Christian in Romans 7 and in Romans 8 borders on contradiction. Paul’s description of a believer in Romans 8 is contrasted, not correlated, with the description of the pre-converted Jew trying to find deliverance and salvation through the Mosaic Law in Romans 7.

Paul refuses to accept the conclusion that Christ promotes sin and lays down this principle in verse 16, and that is that we become the slaves of whatever we choose to obey. Just as Israel was freed from slavery so believers have been freed in the second Exodus from sin.

This section runs from 3:21 through 4:25 and it shows God’s faithfulness to the covenant. But Israel has been unfaithful. Does this mean that God's covenant plan has failed? The covenant faithfulness of God is revealed through one who will do and be what Israel should have done and been. God will be faithful to the covenant with Abraham, through the one faithful Israelite--Jesus through whom the light will shine to all the world.

Paul goes deeper into his treatment of Judaism moving into chapter 3. Paul will ask and answer 5 questions. He asks what he knows the audience will ask and then answers one at a time all while refuting the lie. He will then return back to the first rhetorical question about whether or not Jews have any advantages answering it with greater clarity.

Paul continues his discussion on the moralist and then turns to Judaism. God's judgment is announced because their works fall short of God's perfect standard. The moralist plays the judge because of the sliding scale they have created. And because God shows no partiality His judgment will come upon the Jewish man as well. Paul explains that the possession of the Law is of no advantage. Nor is having Abraham as a father or circumcision. A Jew is one inwardly. The evidence of our rightness with God is not contained in outward signs or works, and it is not assured because of our parentage. The evidence is found in the work of God in our heart which shows itself in fruit.

This is a very well-known section of Romans. Paul will speak of self-evidence. Although what is knowable of God is enough to convict a man for ignoring Him, it isn't enough to be saved. Yet, it leaves us without excuse and it also suppresses the truth of God evident in Creation by perpetuating the lie that the Creation is God which is paganism. But not everyone in society participates to the same degree in these behaviors although some will condone it. This gives rise to judgments connecting paganism to moralism.

Romans is often referred to as one of the most remarkable letters in the Bible and one of the most Theological ones. The Apostle Paul wrote this book while on his third missionary journey. By that time the church in Rome was famous throughout the Roman Empire for its faith. The opening address has many insights into the truth of the Gospel and, as we will see, beginning in v.17 there is a concise definition of the Gospel, which serves as Paul's thesis for the entire letter along with three essential parts, each of which Paul will examine in greater detail in later chapters.

James finishes his letter first with a warning to the unbelieving Jews and the soon to come judgment that would occur in AD 70. The remaining part is further encouragement to the believer to grow in patience in response to injustice and recalls the prophets, Job, and Elijah for our example and calls us to a life of prayer.

Chapter 4 of James starts with questions about fighting in the body and the causes. James is quick to point out that the source is the flesh and desires for worldly pleasures. Like much of the letter we will find that seeking God and His wisdom is a must for a life of submission and obedience. It is a humble character that translates differently than that of the world. This, again, is observed through speech and James spends much time in this section of his letter teaching how to fulfill the Royal Law that he mentioned in chapter 2.

We look at 2 Corinthians 5:14-21 this Easter to be reminded of what it means for us living today to be in Christ. The Apostle Paul summarizes the work of Christ on the cross and what it means for those of us who have believed. Paul calls us all ambassadors for Christ and gives a rallying cry to the entire Church. We beg we plead to be reconciled to God for this is now our ministry.

James chapter 3 is focused on speech and its relationship to spiritual maturity. James just finished with a reminder that our life goal must be to declare our faith publicly by doing the works that faith produces. Works are anything that displays our faith, whether an action or a word or even a thought. James first mentions teachers and will then broaden the scope. This is a popular text that many are familiar with. That those who teach will be judged with greater strictness or a higher standard. Why and how so? The context is speech and spiritual maturity and deals with how one handles or mishandles the Word of God.

James now discusses the relationship between faith and that of works by establishing a principle that true faith will be accompanied by a change and action. James clarifies for us the kind of faith that saves. We are saved by grace through faith, not by works; but saving faith will have works that accompany it.

What we are going to see are action and reaction. Hear and do. We have all heard the sayings think before you speak, listen more, speak less, be slow to anger. We hear these things and we say them and for good reason. I just don't know how often we actually practice it.

James has been focused on how a Christian should address trials and that they are a way to expose our degree of spiritual maturity. But at this point in the letter, James needs to make an important distinction between these external tests and inward tests or temptations that are not the result of God’s design (and spoiler alert, it's not the devil after you either). They are natural products of our sinful nature. And like external tests, we face them best when we understand them with Godly wisdom and respond to them according to that wisdom.

We ask some questions when starting a new book of the bible. Questions such as, who is the author, who was the original audience, what was and is the purpose of the letter or the theme or message. Once answered we are faced with the first summarized theme in verses 2 through 4, Christian's attitude and persistence while experiencing trials.

This letter shares some similarities with 1 John and 2 John, though it stands apart in many ways as well. It focuses on three commendations for a man named Gaius for his obedience, hospitality, and self-sacrifice. John then contrasts this man with another, Diotrephes, exposing six offenses.

John raises similar themes using similar phrasing so this is going to be fresh to us as we go through it. He also had similar concerns about false teachers. And in all three of his letters, he consistently emphasizes the need to walk in the knowledge of what we have been given in Christ.

The readers’ assurance had been shaken by these denials and claims, so John writes to bolster their assurance by counteracting the false teaching of the false teachers. They had been shaken by antichrists who denied important elements of the message the readers had embraced at the beginning. In v 13, we have the assurance of salvation. And then about the confidence believers have "in the presence of God." We also learn from verse 21 that idols are not always pagan deities or images made of stone or wood.

Finishing up chapter 4 we can summarize it all with verse 21 that states, "whoever loves God must also love his brother." John draws from Christ's very words to the disciples. We love one another because God has loved us. John then hits us with a statement about Soteriology, which brings forth the ongoing debate within the evangelical church today. Is salvation by a choice of man's own free will or of God's sovereign choice? John then speaks more on the God-Man, Jesus the Christ, emphasizing His incarnation because he wanted all believers to have a sure foundation of faith that rests on God's testimony to the person of Jesus the Christ.

In verse 7 John commands us to love one another which is an encouragement to them to allow God's love to flow through them. Biblical love is divine love. We must remember that it is not a feeling but rather an action that comes about when we grow in our relationship with God. That is, it is not something that naturally occurs for us, it is God and from God. He loves us and His love flows through us.

Making our way into chapter 4 of 1 John we come across a familiar topic. You do not have to be in church very long before you hear phrases like "test the spirits", "spirit of truth" and "spirit of error." Every believer should have enough of a grasp of biblical doctrine to be able to discern between truth and error. But most do not. So how does one test the spirits? What is the test? Many will argue it comes down to fruit and works. We will see that fruit is indeed being spoken of. However, it is the meaning of fruit in the sense John and Jesus spoke of it that many people miss.

in 1 John 3, John is writing with two distinct and radically different groups of people in mind. The first one is the “children of God” and the second one is the “world" or "children of the devil." Moving into chapter 3 we focus our attention on verse 2. There's a lot packed into one verse concerning the coming/appearing of Christ and the transformation to take place when one is resurrected. So, If Christ’s appearance and coming were in AD 70, why do we not have glorified bodies How, then, could Christ’s coming and appearance have been first-century events? As we will see the difficulty revolves around one single word, "when." The issue here is that John, inspired while writing, used the word "if." So, let's try to figure out what was being said.

Last week we saw antichrists were denying that Jesus is the Christ (verse 22). But the promise of eternal life is only made to those who believe that Jesus is the Christ. One of John's primary purposes in writing 1 John is to protect his faithful followers from the false Christological teaching of the opponents and Paul warned Timothy of this same danger. We will also face an eschatological text (verse 28) about the appearing or coming of Christ.

Having established what and when the "last hour" was using scripture and a Biblical definition of antichrist we move forward with John's letter. We will get more info concerning the identity of these false teachers. John will also combat some of their claims with truths that are already obtained by a Christian, such as being anointed. The false teachers claimed a special anointing that brought knowledge and identification with a deity. John asserts that it was believers, not the Gnostics, who had the anointing. As a matter of fact, the New Testament does not speak of a special anointing given to particular individuals because it's to all believers because it's from the Holy Spirit that dwells within all who are in Christ.

Most Christians today would say that we are living in the last days; we are in the last hour. This is a commonly held view. But we have to ask questions like when are the last days or end times and when is the last hour? The last hour is the end of the last days or end times. So, when did the last day start? When did they end? The last days of what? John, writing in the first century, writes that the last hour was then. He then says "many antichrists have come." What is the Biblical definition of antichrist? Scripture seems to paint a very different picture of the end times when compared to modern views.

John personally addresses individual members of the family of God who are at different stages of growth in their fellowship. The phrases being used, fathers, young men, and children, can be taken literally as in different ages and stages of life. However, we can also take them as referring to the different stages in the Christian life. The first Truth John brings up is the forgiveness of our sins for His namesake and the last is the love of the world. The first every Christian knows but the last can be interpreted in various ways.

A purpose of John in writing this letter is: "that you may not sin." The purpose of the book is fellowship, and sin breaks fellowship. So he is writing that they may not sin and remain in fellowship with God. We then deal with Biblical Propitiation and in what way did John mean when he wrote "the whole world"? Texts 3-11 contain three claims to intimate knowledge of God, expressed by "whoever says". Just like the "if we say" section of chapter 1, each of these statements reflects, directly or indirectly, what the author believed the Gnostics falsely claimed and is followed either by a direct rebuttal or by a counterstatement.

False teachers in the first century claimed that the way to salvation was through secret enlightenment or new revelation. They also believed that they had a special superior knowledge to other people who called themselves Christians. As we come to chapter 13 and its many exhortations, we must remember that these exhortations are based upon the 12 chapters of doctrine that precede them. As members of God's family, we are to love one another, cherish the institution of marriage, live without covetous behavior, and look to the Apostles and their teachings. Preterism says Jesus returned in His generation. But, no visible “coming” occurred in that timeframe. So, many believers conclude that this prophetic model is incorrect based on this section of the text.
The Biblical writers use the phrase “in like manner” (Gk. hon tropon) in a way that refutes the traditional view. In no case do these words show an identity of details between two things or events. Most times, such correspondence is impossible.

We all know this section of Scripture, especially after the last year. It has long been used and abused in more ways than one. Now, while obeying government is being obedient to God there are obviously some things we ought not to obey. Unlawful laws and the conscience can butt heads. There is applicability to be had when going through these verses but does it make sense with the overall context of the letter? To whom was Paul writing and instructing? Why are these Roman authorities referred to as servants and ministers of God? Why did Paul use Greek words that refer to deacons in English? Have we possibly ripped these 7 verses out of context because, after all, it seems to be such an abrupt change for Paul from the rest of the letter? Or maybe it is not such an odd and abrupt change at all and we have missed the overall context.

Before the writer unfolds the main point of his final warning, he prefaces it with another contrast between the Old Covenant and the New Covenant. In this case, the contrast is between how these two Covenants beckoned their respective participants to enter. Verses 18-21 describe the events which took place on Mt. Sinai when the 10 commandments were given to Moses, and the Mosaic covenant was enacted in Exodus 19. By contrast, in vs.22-24, the writer reminds us of how the Lord reveals Himself to His children in the New Covenant. Application is then made in verses 25-29.

We are to run with our eyes fixed upon Christ. Just as an athlete fixes his attention on the goal or prize, so must we fix our eyes upon Jesus, Christ-likeness is our goal. This is a present tense, we are to always be looking unto Jesus. But foremost in our author's mind was that apparently, these believers had forgotten the teaching of the Old Testament concerning suffering. They thought that the absence of affliction and suffering was a sign of God's special favor, and conversely, the presence of affliction was evidence of His anger. When actually the exact opposite is true. So, it is imperative that we keep the proper perspective on discipline, discipline is not a sign of God's disfavor, it is a sign of His love. Because He loves you, He disciplines you, He wants you to share His holiness.

Everyone has their opinion on what is wrong with the Church today and how to fix it. The thing is, though, most of the fixing isn't from God's word. If there is one thing for certain when studying the scriptures, it is that our salvation is secure. That is, a believer can not and will not, lose their salvation. But within the Evangelical system today there is such a mixture of different camps many people do not have this assurance. People live in fear of losing their salvation. Even more, many people believe it is up to them to maintain this and even perform works to stay on the good side of God. The Bible says the opposite.

We continue our study in chapter 11 of Hebrews studying the subject of faith. And as I said last week this isn't just saving faith but living faith. Hebrews 11 is one of the most well-known chapters in Scripture, often referred to as the hall of faith. how does God inspire us to move forward in obedience? His word. Through the testimonies of those who've gone before us in faith and when faced with fears and doubts, they moved forward in faith and because of that it was pleasing to God and He gave them the strength to face their trials. So the writer expounds on those who have faith and explains the form and purpose of faith. And he is not simply talking about saving faith but a living faith, not just faith in God for our eternal life but faith in God to carry us through our daily lives.

The writer has now reached the fourth warning of his letter, where he addresses the consequences of his readers returning to a life of false worship under the Old Covenant. That's it, really. The sin that is willful that many like to use out of context is not just any sin. It was/is a specific sin happening then. This is where proper interpretation becomes critical or else we lose the original meaning, make it say something it doesn't say, and disservice not only ourselves but the word of God.

This is the final section dealing with the priesthood of Christ which is in the order of the Melchizedek priesthood. This theme, along with the contents of this letter, was deemed necessary because of the temptation these believers were experiencing from the Jews to turn from Christianity back to Judaism, which meant back to the old testament ways and sacrificial system. With that, the writer ends his teaching on the doctrines of the New Covenant, so now he’s ready to bring an exhortation based on that teaching. His exhortation comes in the form of three “let us” invitations. Invitations to worship, perseverance, and fellowship.

Last week we started chapter 9 and seeing the contrast of the physical Old Testament tabernacle and Christ and ended at verse 12 mentioning the blood of Christ and securing an eternal redemption. So the contrast is moving from the physical tabernacle and the priests' ongoing activity to the blood now. Those Old Testament sacrifices had an effect, they purified the flesh -but that was a temporary, external, and ceremonial cleansing.

To understand this more we have to think of this in terms as the Jew would have thought of it. The temple, the priests, sacrifices, and the Holy of Holies. Although this was the system, it had to be replaced and was only a type of what and who was to come. There are some Christians today who try to bring bits and pieces of the Mosaic Law into Christianity. They do not understand that if the Mosaic Law is in force today, Jesus Christ is not qualified to be our priest. So then, we will see, Christ's ministry is superior to that of the Old Covenant. One was conditional, the other unconditional.

The author has presented and answered the question of who this person is but now we need to know why this is so important and pivotal. And that is answered in the next part of chapter 7. The writer summarizes why it’s important that Jesus came as a priest of a different order declaring the priests of that day as "former priests" no longer needed. He also says it is time to set aside The Law as well because it was interwoven with the priesthood. Here in the west, there is always talk of the soon to happen rapture or the mark of the beast when things start to happen over in Israel. That's because many today believe that the Israel existing today is the same Israel that existed in the Bible. Even more, is the belief that God has two distinct groups of people, Israel and the Church. This causes much confusion for people, especially when it concerns "end times" events. The author's message in 5:11 - 6:20, which is the third warning of the letter, is that the danger of defection must be avoided by persevering progress toward spiritual maturity. Then we reach the part of chapter 6 that is very debated to this day. Can a Christian lose their salvation? We have keep to the text in context. On the surface, it sounds like the author is describing a Christian but if that's the case he is saying it would be impossible for a converted person to be restored again to salvation if he has committed what is in view here. So, who is it referring to?

This is a call to the Hebrews to hold onto their Christian confession. They need to maintain their confession and resist the temptation to let go and fall back to the old, the Old Covenant. But this holds true to us as well to hold fast to our profession. With such a great high priest, we have every reason to hold fast to this confession. We owe our confession to Jesus because He is a superior High Priest.

But the thing is that most would actually believe the same way if they questioned western evangelicalism, went through scripture, and asked, "What does God's Word mean when referring to the "last days"? What is the biblical standard for that phrase? Who does it involve and when? We're working our way through the second of five warnings in this book. The author is still drawing from the history of Israel dealing with their disobedience to God and how He dealt with them. Probably one of the most challenging of the New Testament letters as well as rewarding. So to start we need some info, as usual, such as the author, the audience, and the time frame in which this was penned. And then with the first four texts, we are presented with the writer's primary purpose in writing and it reveals his plan for how he will instruct his arguments. We’ve largely set aside what it is that makes us different. We’ve set aside the very source of that power – Christ Himself. We’ve set aside the sufficiency of the Word of God and replaced it with secular humanistic self-help books and programs only to find ourselves worse off than before. If the Word of God is not enough to address hardships, weaknesses, failures, heartaches, and everything else in this life then nothing else will work either. After finishing Galatians last week Marcuss mentioned we may take a look at Soteriology which is the doctrine of salvation. Most people don't even want to deal with doctrine. You mention doctrine or theology and a lot of people just shut down. But to understand more about God and things like salvation, one needs only to grab the bible to take a look and start seeing what God has to say about it. The biblical point he'd like to make this morning is that regeneration precedes faith. Because within evangelical churches, there is an ongoing debate on the issue of salvation. Is it by a choice of man's free will or of God's sovereign choice?

Paul has given a list of manifestations of the flesh and Spirit for contrast and for us to know these things. We saw these last week and will look at the fruit of the Spirit in more detail today. To live by the Spirit is depending upon the resources and abilities of the Spirit whom God gives by grace through faith. In both cases, the fundamental issue is "depending." Paul tells the Galatian believers, "It was for freedom that Christ set us free." We have been delivered, set free, from the judgment of the law of God, and we no longer live under its disciplinary regulations. Salvation is not a question of what you do; it's is a question of what you believe. It is a question of faith, not works. The next part of Paul's interpretative process is the focus of union with Christ for all believers. The conclusion of chapter three is the charter of the New Testament Church and the ground of her invincible claim to be the lawful successor of Abraham, the true Israel, the true circumcision (not in the flesh but in the spirit), the inheritor of the promises and privileges and hope of Old Testament Israel. Paul has laid out his defense and proof and now addresses the readers with some questions that are asked in a tone of rebuke. The New Testament records an incident where a poor widow gave two small copper coins as a gift into the Jewish Temple treasury. Jesus commends her for giving ‘all she had to live on’ even though the Old Testament law only required a tenth – or tithe – be given to the Temple. How self-sacrificial! WAIT! The reality is that the widow is never commended by Jesus. This is an assumption we have made about the text, especially in light of the fact that church giving is so esteemed amongst Evangelical Christians, who often mistakenly equate the Temple and Church institutions. So, let's take a look at the context and rethink the widows offering.

This is something that has been mentioned some in the podcast and in sermons by Marcuss. A topic that can seem to be very touchy with som. But when you start to study it, along with its history, one can start to realize that it is the majority that believes it is biblical and only the minority that rejects it. So let's first define who the Christian is and compare that to scriptures about salvation and God's word about it. If you believe a Christian can lose their salvation then this will be a good starting point for you on the topic of Eternal Security.

So here's the problem. This wrong message is throwing many of these believers into confusion. It is causing some of them to question their own salvation. It is causing some of them to wonder about some of their converts. Are they really saved since they put their faith in Christ, or do they have to go back and re-evangelize them with this other message, which includes Christ plus the law? That’s the issue at hand. Paul is astonished to hear they are deserting the one who called them in Grace of Christ so quickly.

The Galatians first heard the Gospel and received it from Paul and Barnabas on their first missionary trip. Just a little time after this, Paul gets word that false apostles, which we call Judaizers, had been trying to add to the work of Christ and faith in Him alone for salvation.

Here we get a list of some of the people who had helped Paul in his ministry. A lot of times closing sections of a letter can be overlooked and because of that, some insight is lost. What this closing revealed to the Colossians and what it reveals to us is that Paul wasn’t working alone. Many worked with Paul and Paul knows without these people his ministry would not have been as effective so he acknowledges that and includes these people in closing.

As a reminder for chapter 3, Paul has been laying out our union with Christ and how that not only transforms us spiritually, making us new creations, but also the practical daily experiences in our relationships with each other. Last week we saw Paul applying this teaching to the family. And Paul continues in the same section speaking to bondservants and earthly masters because this was still a household relationship at that time. We can not compare most biblical slave/master relationships in the sense of racial slavery in early American history. So, we need to divorce ourselves from the idea that slavery in the Bible was racial, discriminatory, and abusive. It was much like our employee/employer relationship today. Then we will find our application.

In this section Paul addresses wives, husbands, children, and fathers. It's easy to look and act one way outside in the world and be different within the walls of our own home. The model for the family in which God instituted is under attack today. Often the failures found in marriage and parenting our due to our own sin. Paul continues in this epistle with Christ as the center and our model. Not only did Paul command the body to bear with one another but also to love one another. The two are obviously not exclusive then. Love binds everything together in unity and we do this empowered by the Holy Spirit. This also comes about by letting the word of Christ dwell within us. Looking at other texts we will see that the word of Christ within us and the Holy Spirit within us are the same. That is, the word filled Christian is a Spirit filled Christian and vice versa.

Paul is declaring that we are no longer to live in the way we used to, that is, the unregenerate state of death. So we are going to see again more imperatives of the new life. This is off with the old self and on with the new self since we are new creations in Christ. Again, as stated last week, these are rooted in the reality of who we are in Christ. The first four verses of chapter 3 are like a hinge; they summarize the first two chapters of the letter concerning doctrine: the truths of the Christian faith. They then launch us into the next two chapters of the letter, which concern ethics; how to live the Christian life. Simply, its the how to's, the instructions, and applicability. Looking at how the things we do should be an act of service to God.

Just as we value and defend our personal freedoms we need to guard our spiritual freedoms in Christ as well. The good news of the Gospel message is that we have been set free to live by the power of Christ. Set free from the law of sin and death and given a new life to be lived by faith through His glorious grace. Though many are completely unaware of this because of a mixture of law and grace has been taught in churches. So, now, Paul deals with legalism and mysticism and asking the question, why? Why go back when you have died with Christ? The believer has freedom, true freedom, that many will make you question and doubt by offering up what they have to add to God's Grace, only to negate it and move you back to where you were before being made complete.

Two verses! That's it. Revelation 13:16-17, the mark of the beast, and buying and selling. Cashless society, one-world government, and it's ruler, the Anti-Christ. From those two verses! How? By imposing it onto the text. That is not how one interprets the Bible. So, Marcuss has been over eschatology (end times) multiple times but the recent coin shortage finally got people talking about the end. It only took four months into the pandemic, but hey, at least now He gets to talk about it. Futurists should listen and at least find something else to impose onto the text because their presuppositions just aren't there and we will see that by looking at other scripture, since it is, indeed, its best interpreter.

Paul now introduces another reason to be against false teachings - all the fullness of God dwells in Christ. All of this is positional to the believer. That is, being in Christ, we have been crucified, buried, and resurrected with Him as well. We lack nothing in the sight of the Father. Although our human experience may tell us differently, our experience is not what saves us, Christ does.

Paul reminds the Colossians that what they had received was what they were to continue in, that is, the apostle's doctrine or teachings of Christ. The false teachers were not giving the person and work of Christ proper interpretation or emphasis. So Paul emphasizes that the full assurance of understanding cannot be had apart from Christ. All other things that subtract are meaningless. Paul then describes how false teachers take people captive by human philosophy and the three parts that define its source or origin.

At the start of the year, we started going through Colossians and finished chapter 1 before closing due to the pandemic. So now we pick up where we left off by looking at the beginning of chapter 2. We know Paul has struggled and toiled, words where we get our word agonize from. There are many things that we can see as part of this labor and struggle through Paul's words and prayer for the Colossians. The summary of these is for them to know the mystery of God, which is Christ and what Christ provides to us through our Christian love and knowledge of Him through the word and, then, empowered by the Holy Spirit. Let us learn from Paul and struggle in these things for one another as Christ's Church.

The first sermon since the shut down due to Covid-19. It's been a while and many of us have experienced a wave of emotions. It doesn't matter if it is fear, anxiety, worry, sadness, or any other number of reactions we deal with as being human, it is common for us all. However, it is important to know, as believers, who we are and who our God is. The one who has called us granted our faith in Christ, glorified, and justified us and is also the author of our hope. Our God is a God of hope and we are empowered by the Holy Spirit to grow into mature believers as we study and learn from His word. Be encouraged and know, that just like your faith and salvation, you will not lose your hope because you are in Christ.

Many Christians today seem to lack a worldview that is Biblical. Many have been taught that strict doctrine and theology are bad things. Rather, they have heard countless sermons on empathy, self-help, sympathy, tolerance, relevance, and progressive thought. All these things have lead many to believe in philosophies from men and tradition full of empty deceit, such as critical theory, critical race theory, racial reconciliation, institutional oppression, and many others that are not in accordance with Christ. Ignoring Paul's command to the Colossians from chapter 2. So let's look at what Paul said, understand it, and apply it to our lives because adding anything else to Grace, anything else to the Gospel, anything else to Christ reduces it to nothing. And since the Church is now experiencing an "awokening", many are bowing to the new religion.

Have you ever stopped to think logically for a moment that not being able to judge anyone or anything seems to be completely out of line with many other scriptures in the Bible? C'mon, many of us have used this one and have had it used against us as well. Most of the time it's a barrier for one to continue on in the way they are living. Remember, we need to understand the use of grammar when reading the Bible. Many of us have a complex. Simply put, we always think the "you" is ourselves but that can not be the case most of the time. Jeremiah 29:11 is known by all and used by all as well...for ourselves. But was that Lord declaring that to us or someone else? Perhaps a group of people? You know where this is leading. Learn the context and understand the text.

Think Logically for a moment. Do two or more people have to be together for Jesus to be within their midst? He's with us always isn't He? So why do most of us use Matthew 18:20 in agreement for prayer and other things? We are learning how to read the Bible and this is another text often used out of context. Context matters. Marcuss has spent hours teaching on Eschatology, especially Preterism. And while he has explained that it is not an essential doctrine it still matters because theology matters. Whether one likes it or not we all engage in theology. So, Preterism has become a broad umbrella term under which many of men's doctrines have collected. We must be careful in explaining our eschatological view and also know that just because someone shares in it doesn't mean they have a solid theological understanding of "Proper Theology." Did you know that most of our English Bibles contain what is known as "the long ending" to Mark's Gospel? Did you know there were other endings? How do we determine if it is authentic or not? Well, in interpretation you may end up doing some textual criticism as well. Marcuss is no pro at this but does know how to look at internal evidence. We can see what matches by letting scripture interpret scripture. Also, by reading one's whole account, you get to know them as a writer. So do verses 9-20 sound like Mark? If so, how? If not, how so? Most are in agreement but what is actually important here is that it doesn't call into question God's word as a whole or change any doctrinal teachings we hold on to. Find out why.

Every 10 to 20 years things happen that have the end time pundits of our day begin to shout, "the end is near!" But is that really the case? It's been the case many times for the last 120 years and yet the end never came. Many believe that scripture proclaims that an increase and intensity of things such as earthquakes and pestilence will occur giving us the signs of the times but is this true? Jesus only mentioned these things once and were not signs but the beginning of birth pains. So what is the truth? The cross takes away the human effort and any amount of works one can do as the hope of their salvation. Paul has stated his Christology and now moves into the how and why of reconciliation. There is much grace in this last part of chapter one and it can raise some questions to those not familiar with the Biblical language. Verse 23 uses the word "if" and the phrase "in the faith" and both are crucial to understanding Paul's statement correctly and not create confusion. Paul is simply retelling the Gospel to the church again as once received from Epaphras to combat the false teachings coming along. Know the scriptures and know your place in Christ. Besides our salvation, understanding the results of Christ's work can change many things.

Because its not! Pleading the blood has become a superstitious ritualistic way of praying. Now don't get it wrong here. This section of Colossians is often called The Great Christology because it is Pauls's inspired understanding of the person Jesus and of who He is. The first half is about creation and the universe, the point being that Chris is preeminent over it because He's the one that made it. Then Paul will shift focus in the second half to the new creation which is the church. This is rich Christological truth from the image, form, and being of Christ in the use of these words contrasted with that of humanity and to see that everything that is from, through, and in Christ, because He created it all, has it's ultimate goal in Him as well.

In Genesis 1 God creates man and saying, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over..." along with, "fill the earth and subdue it." For those who understand the biblical narrative thus far, we know Adam disobeyed God's command. The thing is, though, having dominion was not the command. Rather, it was to "not eat of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil." So, overstating the case by saying this dominion mandate is an order or command has huge consequences to the rest of the biblical narrative. Also, we know Jesus came as "the last Adam" and in doing so fulfilled everything needed as being "the substance." The question now is, "Who has dominion?" Is it all Christ's or does He share it with His brethren? And if so, how?

The apostle Paul greeted the Colossians (1:1-2), gave thanks to God for their faith and love (1:3-8), and then followed with a specific prayer for their growth in the knowledge of God's will (1:9-14). In verses, 9-11 Paul prays for certain blessings for the Colossians, here we read that Paul wants them to continue to grow so he's praying for their spiritual growth. Then in verses 12-14 he lists things for which he gives thanks.

So we ended last week on three graces that Paul had heard about in the lives of the Colossians which were faith, love, and hope. And as Marcuss said verses 3-8 is one long sentence where verse 3 governs everything else that will be said through verse 8 which is, "We always thank God", and at the core of all of this is the Gospel and the message of Christ.

Well, Marcuss didn't know about Trump's Middle East Peace Policy coming out this week so this is interesting. There are two biblical truths that Christian Zionists don't seem to realize: That because of Israel's disobedience, God is finished with National Israel in the form of the Mosiac Covenant and they don't seem to understand who True Israel is. Zionism is a political movement built on the belief that the Jewish people deserve by right to possess the land of Palestine as their own. Christian Zionism as a modern theological and political movement embraces the most extreme ideological positions of Zionism, something which seems to be unbiblical.

In Galatians 4 Paul is arguing with those who want to go back to Judaism and take Jesus with them. He is addressing people who want a hybrid religion that is part Jewish and part Christian. The Jews knew that they were the descendants of Abraham, Sarah, and Isaac, but Paul turned their most prized "bragging right" on its head by saying, "No, you are the descendants of Hagar!

When we realize our filters and presuppositions we can remove them. When we understand time statements and audience relevance more we can see them. When comparing some of the things we believe and say to scripture we can find inconsistencies. This is flawed theology and should be fixed.

Here's another "driving theology" episode! This one is for Pastors but everyone will learn. It's often said that Mondays are the worst day for Pastors and this is the day they want to walk away from ministry. Well, why? Was the response weak, the crowd not into it, the worship not spontaneous enough? Then maybe Mondays are bad because you're heart as a Pastor is in the wrong place. Why do we preach? For amen's and excitement from other people or to glorify God? When you simply set out to teach what the text is saying there's not much of a burden to be had and not only will the rest of Sunday be good but you'll see that Mondays are good too.

Marcuss expands more on the devil being dead in this sermon. To be sure, defeated and destroy are two different things. To see that the devil was defeated at the cross and then destroyed soon after at the end of the age (70 AD) makes contextual biblical sense. But to see the devil defeated but still have rule and reign for 2000 years makes no sense at all. John and Paul make several statements about the destruction of the devil and also the abolishment of death! If we believe in the inspiration of scripture then we should be believing in the things it states.

This is another "driving theology" recording. This time Marcuss shares some thought on how to share the eschatological view of Preterism. Everyone is going to have their way of sharing but let's face it, this isn't always the best topic to just dump on someone if they have no clue about existing in the first place. There are approaches that can lend to great conversations that end up edifying everyone. Should you ask them some questions? Point out certain texts? Yeh, probably so and while you're at it tell them things about audience relevance and time statements. Take it slow with some people. Go faster with others. Even if at the end they haven't changed their view, you've taught them about interpretation and that another view exists without a fight and being called a heretic. That in itself is worth it.

In this parable, we will see, the vineyard is Israel the owner is God, the tenant farmers are the Jewish leaders, the slaves are the prophets that are throughout Israel's history that the leadership has always rejected, and the only son is Jesus. Now this parable gives us the history and the future (70 AD) of the nation of Israel from a first-century perspective. Remember, that is pretty much always our goal. A first-century perspective and understanding. Audience relevance means a lot. From this, we can look back and see the accuracy of the bible and that history played out just as this parable predicted.

Jesus speaks of "the least of these" in Matthew 25 and it's often assumed and taught that they are the homeless, the downtrodden, the orphans, and widows. Loving and caring for them is to do so unto Him. Those who do not are goats and cast into the fire. These messages can be burdensome and when you see the context of "the least of these" you'll see that they are wrong as well. Scripture is filled with calls for compassion and caring for those in need, this is true however they are not "the least of these" mentioned by Christ in Matthew 25 about the separation of sheep and goats dealing with judgment. Let's do our best to keep the bible in its context.

We are to be salt and light. Call it evangelism, outreach, or influence, it all boils down to the same thing. Our faith is to have an impact on the world in which we live. We, as believers, are called to influence our society, culture, and world. But it's pretty hard to be effective if you're not at a place where the salt makes contact and where the light can be seen.

Christmas, Easter, and every day there should be a moment to realize the Revelation of Jesus Christ. When Christ was born it was more than just a mere baby in a manger that would later be depicted in front yards and on Christmas cards. This was the appointed time for the world's Savior to come crashing in on Imperial Rome, a stone not cut by human hands. Much like the mustard seed and leaven, this stone would grow into a mountain just as Daniel interpreted the King's dream. That mountain is a place where John was placed in Revelation 22 to see the wife of the Lamb, the Church, the heavenly Jerusalem in which was once above and free as Paul wrote of but now has come down into this world to proclaim a message. That message is that God is indeed with us and speaking through us of the tree and river of life! Come, all who are thirsty and thirst no more. The stone is a mountain and the everlasting Kingdom has no end.

Jesus restarted the human race as a new Adam. That’s why the Bible calls Jesus the “Second Adam”. And that’s why our Savior had to come through a virgin birth. So that He could be a human being yet remain free from the original sin nature we all inherited. Like Adam, Jesus did not have an earthly father. This is Immanuel which means God with us, not like us.

In this next part of the conversation with Paul, we get to hear about how learning the basic principals of interpretation changed everything. It wasn't just a change in eschatology that Paul experienced but everything else about his theology. From the gifts of the Spirit to how much of popular Christianity ignores the basic context of a scripture. In all of this, the majority of his biblical view had been dismantled. Well, this has been a long time coming! Marcuss welcomes his very first guest ever to the podcast, Paul. As you'll hear, Paul was a regular listener to the show and it didn't take long for him to consider Marcuss crazy. Honestly, he thought the things Marcuss was saying were heretical. So Paul set out to strengthen his study and future eschatology view to prove preterism wrong. The thing is, though, he had also learned about the proper interpretation of the Bible and it wouldn't be long until he started to see things in context. The more context, the more clarity. The more clarity, the more he realized that preterism was at least something to be considered. It turns out that Paul would end up leaving the future eschatological view behind and come over to a more hopeful view. The results radically changing most of what he believed.

In this sermon, Marcuss goes through the genealogy of Jesus from Matthew's Gospel. Matthew wrote his account to a Jewish audience and the birth account of Christ is from Joeseph's perspective. While many of us may skip genealogy accounts in scripture and give no attention to them, the Jews most certainly would have cared and been concerned with this. Matthew had a point to make and there is something to be learned so why not learn from it?

Let's do out best not to commit the root fallacy that will then result in the exegetical fallacy. This all seg ways into being a theologian. Yes, we know, it's all about relationship and not religion. Here's the thing though, that relationship is theology! Romans 8:1 reads loud and clear. No if's, and's or buts! If you are trusting to any degree in your own morality or religious attainments, or if you believe God will somehow recognize any of your good works as merit toward your salvation, you need to seriously consider if you are truly a Christian. There is no condemnation to us who are in Christ. God has made us righteous, He has made us accepted in the Beloved. We will never suffer His wrath, we will never face His punishment because Jesus Christ has taken care of all of that on our behalf. That is what GRACE is all about.

What did the writer of Hebrews really mean when he wrote to not forsake the gathering? Is it really about missing, skipping, or not going to church? What about the salvation prooftext of confessing with one's mouth? Is that what Paul was really getting at when he wrote Romans to believers in the Roman Empire in the first century? What does it mean to worship in spirit and in truth? And is getting tattoos or being overweight actually defacing or abusing the temple of God? To try to rip a verse out of context cheapens Scripture and insults the intelligence of its readers. A text without a context is just a con.

2 Corinthians 5:16-21
Five times in those brief verses some form of the word “reconciliation” is used and that defines the theme of these verses. It's all about the ministry of reconciliation. God has restored favor unto man enabling him to come to Him through Christ by faith alone. No priest, no sacrifice, no temple or a certain time of year for a feast or festival. The world is reconciled, favor has been restored to come to God through Christ. And this is the ministry we have had placed inside of us!

Jumping back into Hebrews 9 we come to verse 11 starting with "But Christ". Everything mentioned before in this chapter, everything consisting of the Mosaic Economy comes to an end with "But Christ"! The point of this passage is to show the superiority of the Lord Jesus Christ to the Old Covenant system. The writer, basically, says, "Why would you want to go back to an inferior type when you have the reality?" So Christ's work is contrasted with that of the Old Covenant and we see the superiority of Jesus Christ and his work. Christ, as high priest, has entered the true tabernacle, which is heaven. Everything is completed once for all!

Last week there was a question about being judged by our works. It certainly is a topic worthy of discussion. Obviously, the Gospel is about what Jesus has done. There is not one thing we can do on our own to guarantee any protection or validity for eternal life. We are created for good works through Christ, indeed. However, thinking we are only to do works based on a reward system because of some moral scale God has to weigh our eternity is, in itself, nonsense! The Father gives salvation to all who do nothing more than to believe in His Son. We either believe the witness God has given concerning His Son that salvation is only through Him, or we are still trying to be saved by and through our own works of righteousness.

This is probably a well-needed episode. Many of us today confuse words and doing so confuses views. So if someone does not have a proper biblical understanding of words they end up with a biblical worldview that isn't biblical. So while Hebrews 4:15 states, "For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin", we often tend to believe that Jesus knows what it is like to have sinful desires. But that is not what that verse is saying. Jesus was tempted, yes, and He understands this but we deal with desires and sometimes those are sinful. What's the difference? Listen to find out.

We need to understand the complete sufficiency of the sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ, and that our assurance is based solely on Christ's works, not anything we do. There seems to be confusion about the New Covenant and the completed of Christ. Many still pray David's prayer today to have a clean heart created them when they have already received a new heart through Christ. Many live in John's baptism even though when Paul discovered those who were living it He preached the Gospel to them. So, Christ is seated, we know that but do we know what it means?

This is the ninth week of looking at Jude's letter that was written to protect the church against those who aim to destroy it from within. Although many deep things are packed within these verses Jude starts to call his focus and attention on the believer. For them to be built up in the most holy faith, keeping in the love of God, praying in the Holy Spirit, and waiting on the Lord (something different for the first-century believer compared to today). Finally, Jude gives the church confidence to resist false teachers by reminding them they stand in the power of God. God has the power to keep or guard us from stumbling.

This second summary of Revelation brings us to the third key, the theme. The Olivet Discourse contains Christ's prophecy of the destruction of the Temple and the Tribulation. A number of biblical scholars note that Revelation seems to be John's extended version of the Olivet Discourse and his expansion on it. So, Marcuss compares the Olivet Discourse and Revelation to show the theme of the Old Covenant ending. The decree of Revelation is the divorce of an unfaithful bride, Israel, and taking a new bride, the Church.

Marcuss has gone over the Revelation and now wants to speak about the date. The most important issue that confronts the reader of Revelation is the date that it was written. And there are two views: the late date view (AD 95-96), which is the current evangelical opinion and the early date view (AD 65-66). The early date view says that Revelation speaks of the birth pangs of the Kingdom, the beginning of Church history. The late date view allows for a wide variety of interpretations and comes exclusively from external evidence based on a statement made by Irenaeus in the 100's. The safest course and more reliable is to study the Revelation itself to see what internal evidence it presents regarding the date of its writing. Marcuss will do this while asking when was it written? What is the proper approach? And what is its theme? This is all from an early date view and a first-century view of the Revelation which states is all in the past.

Jude pronounces woe upon the false teachers in the first century and by extension, all false teachers. They have gone the way of Cain. They have rushed into the error of Balaam. And they have perished in the rebellion of Korah. Next Jude wants the church to have a better understanding of these men and how they operate so he gives six illustrations of them from examples of nature and follows by the words of the Prophet Enoch of their coming judgment.

The Temple, Jerusalem, and the Old Covenant have passed away, this is the end. Although the language sounds much like heaven, the time restrictions used in words are prevalent, much of what is being said could not be used to describe heaven. No, the new heavens and earth, the tree and river of life are for the healing of the nations. Those who thirst are told to come! How can this be a new redeemed earth with no sin if sinners are outside of the gates of a new Jerusalem and welcomed to come and thirst no more? Because we are dealing with a language that we are removed from! This isn't life in a utopian world like many of us have been taught all of our lives. No, this is the New Covenant, this is the Gospel going forth to the world by the bride of Christ, the church. This is the beginning and it happened in 70 AD.

This week looks at the use of "angelic majesties" and "blaspheming glory." Then moving on to the text from "The Assumption of Moses" we have to ask just what is "the body of Moses." It becomes quite simple once we think biblically and then logically to find out that Jude isn't talking about fighting over a dead corpse but rather a corporate group of people. These two topics are highly debated and a source for much confusion today. Futurists demand a literal 1,000 years in "the millennium" while ignoring the time indicators of words such as "near", "soon", and "at hand." Marcuss explains how this is not to be taken literally and suggests the so-called "millennium" was the 40 year time period from 30 AD to 70 AD while the Old and New Covenants overlapped. He then looks at the other unpopular notion that the devil is in fact already destroyed and dead because of the work of Jesus in the first century.

Sodom and Gomorrah serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire. They were destroyed forever. That's the lesson Jude is drawing from this example. The false teachers of his day were indulging in fleshly sinful desires and God has judgment prepared for them. Jude then goes on to give us a character sketch summary in verse 8.

In this episode, Marcuss goes through chapters 17, 18, and 19 of Revelation. This is where we read of the defeat of Jerusalem, the death. The march and praises to Christ, the victory. Then John introduces another name for the false prophet, the harlot. The harlot is also called Babylon the Great and John depicts the final destiny of her along with the beast, Nero, being cast into the lake of fire.

The Old Testament teaches that apostates will be judged and Jude illustrates the truth that divine judgment upon apostates isn't something new because he cites three historic instances that establish the certainty of the fate that awaits those who fall away from the truth. In this sermon, Marcus discusses verse 5 that talks about the judgment on apostate Israel in the wilderness after the Exodus and verse 6 on apostate "angels" or "gods." This lends to the conversation the topic of "The Divine Council." That is, what exactly is Genesis 6:1-2 talking about, what role does that play in the theme of Genesis and the rest of scripture then ultimately the outcome, which Jude is pointing to.

The opening of the seven-sealed scroll was an edict of judgment delivered by God against Jerusalem. Following, the seven trumpets sounded a warning and now the seven bowls of wrath are described and to be poured out upon the city of Jerusalem and on the Temple. Revelation 16 contains the story of the outpouring of these seven bowls and there's much to learn when comparing scripture with scripture and the seven plagues God inflicted upon Egypt. Some of those plagues that God used to deliver Israel from Egypt would now be used to bring judgment upon the city of Jerusalem. This leads us to Armageddon, a much-misunderstood word and concept today, a metaphor for the last great battle at Jerusalem, a reference to the destruction of the city in the first century.

Jude states that there are certain people that have crept in unnoticed. Men who sit beside, walk along with, blend in with us but who are ungodly people. They were prophesied beforehand. The Church had been warned. Now, Jude says, they're here. Jude calls them "ungodly people", and specifically, Jude is referring to specific men in the Church who are wicked or sinful. What exactly does Jude mean and is there criteria versus characteristic when comparing God's word to false teachers and prophets in the church? It would seem not because as we search the scriptures we will see what God has to say about these "certain people."

The number is not 666. It is six hundred and sixty-six. It just so happens that there was a method of calculation that was common during the writing of Revelation. This is why John said, "Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast." Do those today understand we are told to have wisdom concerning how to calculate this number or do we just look for the mark? In the first century, there was not a system like that which we are familiar with today with digits. In the Hebrew system, the first letter of the alphabet was equivalent to our number 1. Marcuss explains this and does the calculation which the original audience would have been able to understand and calculate themselves. The number of the beast revealed a man alive in the first century and the mark was not a microchip or any other methods that end time pundits today speculate on.

Revelation chapters 12 through 14 deal with prominent enemies of the saints of the early Church: The dragon (satan), The Roman Empire generically, Nero specifically and The Jewish Priesthood. In preparing for the pouring out of the wrath of God a pause is taken to identify the three enemies who would all be working together to destroy the early Church. Marcuss takes a little in-depth at these enemies and the historical evidence for them. As always, we look back to the Old Testament, like Daniel, to get more information to help understand the context the way John's audience would have had knowledge of. This then brings us to the beast which we will take a little look at then expound more on in the next episode.

Jude was interrupted in writing about our common salvation and is now to write an appeal to the church so they would take action. Jude (inspired by the Spirit) wants the church to contend earnestly for the faith. Contend earnestly is a single word in Greek meaning to struggle or fight or resist on behalf of something or someone. To contend earnestly for or to fight is the same idea. This is to fight for, to fight strenuously for, to defend vigorously. "I am calling on you to an extreme form of agony." And the way it is written means: "it's a continuous action. I am calling on you, I am appealing to you to an ongoing battle, continuous conflict." To fight for the faith, preserve the Gospel, and combat false teaching that comes from within the Church.

We are now moving along from the opening of the seven seals to the blowing of the seven trumpets in chapters 9 through 11. We will see an outline of the trumpets that include internal conflict in Jerusalem, the armies of Rome approaching Jerusalem, an interlude, a drama witness, and two more witnesses. Looking at the Old Testament we can find trumpets used in scripture before to help us understand the use of trumpets in Revelation. We will also discuss who the witnesses were and some various views on this. Then we will see that the last trumpets are tied with the woes.

"To those who are called, beloved in God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ: May mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you." Here is mercy from God the Father, who is called "the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort" (2 Corinthians 1:3), and peace from the Son, for "He is our peace" (Ephesians 2:14), and love from the Spirit (Romans 5:5), "because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us." The Trinity is involved here and in our salvation. So how are these things multiplied?

This episode covers chapters 6 through 8:5, looking at what happened as the seals of the scroll were broken. The opening of the seals was God's way of declaring judgment on the Jews of the Old Covenant who rejected Jesus and the answer to the persecuted Christians of the tribulation, both enduring and killed, who were crying out for vengeance. The first four seals were identified or tied to the four horses and the horseman. These four horsemen would reveal to apostate Israel, by means of signs, that God had declared judgment against them.

There are people who Jude says have crept in unnoticed. These people pervert grace. They taught that they were no longer limited by the ethical teachings of Christ and could live any way they wanted to with or without sinning. Some preached that they had a new "spiritual" revelation that replaced the message of the apostle's teachings that they had brought to the church. So Jude's heretics or apostates were turning the grace of God into an excuse for flagrant immorality. The scriptures speak on false teachers and prophets but for the life of many, we don't understand why people do not pay attention to the word of God on this manner. So, this is an introduction to Jude's letter to the Church covering other portions of texts on false teaching.

This episode deals with chapters 4 and 5 of Revelation. And since this has been an overview not much is spent going over chapter 4. This shows a picture of God and His throne in imagery form. So, these images are discussed and related to Old Testament images that we can see and relate them to. In chapter 5 we are introduced to the sealed scroll, a scroll filled with three sevens. Seven seals, seven trumpets and seven bowls. It seems these have a flow, a declaration, the warning, and the execution. This is a common pattern in the scriptures of how God carries our His judgment. But who are the declaration, the warning, and execution for? As you know already it is for apostate Israel for being an adulterous nation, an unfaithful bride. This scroll is a decree, from their Husband, of divorce and only Jesus is the one who can break the seals.

You read it right, destroyed not destroys. Listen to Marcuss explain how the paradox explanation doesn't work with this when compared to scripture. The Bible clearly states that Jesus would come and crush the head of the devil, destroy the one who holds the power of death, destroy the works of this spiritual being and, while at it, disarm the rulers and authorities. The problems we go through are not because of the devil but the sin that he introduced into the world which produces the works of the flesh which are evident! May we all stop blaming the dead enemy that Jesus clearly destroyed through His death and work on ourselves to be better led by the Holy Spirit.

Thinking about leadership and what the Bible actually says about it, along with church growth, Marcuss speaks a little on "Pulpit Bullies". Yes, it's a thing and its a misuse of the platform and the noble task of an overseer. Anyone using time on Sunday's to beat the sheep is out of line and needs to be corrected. So, let's look at scripture and see what God had to say to the shepherds of old that didn't look after the sheep. Today, Jesus is the head, He is the Shepherd of all, He is the leader and we are all under Him. All are to be fed and feeding one another and any leader that says 'follow me' instead of 'follow me as I follow Christ' probably only intends to beat and misuse the sheep.

The Revelation was written to a specific group of people living in a certain period of time. Now, some will say it contains or includes letters written to seven churches but still the entire Revelation was given to them along with these letters that are contained within. These churches then were also literally reading each other's mail along with the things they all needed to know as a whole. In this episode, we look at the letters to the seven churches, their content and the function these letters have as part of Revelation as a whole.

Jesus spoke in parables many times and we know His purpose from Matthew 13:10-17. Our task, then, is to stand at the back of the audience around Jesus and listen to what He was saying to THEM. This means cultural and audience relevance. Those around Him had "supposed that the Kingdom of God was to appear immediately." So, Jesus delivers this parable about a nobleman to go off to receive a kingdom and puts the affairs of his work into the hands of his servants by entrusting to them gifts, saying to them in effect, be faithful while I am gone until I return. Audience relevance means that those servants receiving the gift would still be around for the return of their King for Him to examine their faith within their lifetime. This is the parable as seen in a first-century context and fulfillment.

Before moving on we have challenges to face because looking ahead after verses 1-3 in Chapter 1 we read about Jesus coming with the clouds and all the tribes of the earth mourning. How can any of this have happened in the year 70 AD? How does handle this or how do we limit these events to the first-century? That's what this episode aims to address and answer. Marcuss often gives principals of interpreting the Bible in almost all episodes of the podcast and in this one you will learn or re-learn again. We will deal with literalism, comparing scripture with scripture, and apply these to the questions at hand. We will be looking at other biblical examples of judgment, the use and meaning of coming on the clouds and the different uses of the word earth and the literary device of a metaphor or apocalyptic language that is used throughout the Revelation. In doing so we will find that time restriction can be proven, and therefore, limited to a specific time period and a group of people, those whom the Revelation was written to.

The Bible teaches that the reward of believers is everlasting life, while the punishment of the wicked is just as the Scriptures state—death, which is the opposite of life. As the wicked will have no escape from death, it is eternal punishment. It is talking about the result of the action and not the action itself. The punishment is death and that is eternal. The destruction of the wicked in the lake of fire is permanent. It is a punishment that cannot be reversed. The act of punishing will come to an end, but the consequences will last for eternity.

The opening words in this Epistle gives us the proper title of it, "The Revelation of Jesus Christ." To many this a book of dark mystery and a source of speculation as well as confusion. However, it's called "Revelation" for a reason! It's a revealing of God's plans for those to whom it was written to in the first-century. It is a revealing or disclosing of something. So, we focus on just the first three verses because it will be interesting to see what Jesus reveals about the time of His return because it seems that He indeed established that this Epistle is "The Revelation" of Him! There is nothing mysterious here at all. He is not hiding anything from His servants. No, He was showing, revealing, and disclosing to THEM things He wanted THEM to read, hear, obey, and keep.

Sin's wages are death, not eternal torture, but death. God's gift is eternal life. Dying and continuing to live forever for both the believer and the unbeliever presuppose that humans have souls that are immortal. And my thought has also been if the free gift from God for being in Christ is eternal life, which is immortality, then those who go to hell for all eternity are also receiving immortality as well. In other words, that simply can not be the case because only believers receive this gift. So where did this doctrine of an eternal soul come from and is it Biblical?

Well, here it is, the first episode of the Revelation series. This is an introduction, a primer, on what Revelation is, how to read and understand the language used by John by considering principals of interpretation and using the Old Testament to get a better understanding on what is being said. This will not be a verse by verse commentary on this Epistle but rather an overview of the message and overarching theme. The goal will be to understand this as the recipients did, to whom it was written, and what it told them. That being said, this will focus on a first-century fulfillment of the Revelation because it was written to seven churches in the first-century. It had to be a prophetic letter containing things which were soon to take place to them and not us 2,000 years later.

This part of the Lord's prayer is either the most misunderstood or misinterpreted part of the model prayer itself. From the Calvinist to the Charismatic, there's either so much sovereignty at play that it is what it is and nothing can be done or we have so much control we are supposed to literally manifest Heaven and take over the Earth. The question is, "What is God's will?" So many people spend so much time searching, praying, and crying out to God for His will to be done in their lives and on Earth but seem to miss the simplicity of what that actually is! Do you need a vision, a calling or a dream to walk in God's will? The answer is simple because it's in His word, no, you don't. Know His word, know His will and then live it out in Christ on Earth.

We now come to the second request in "The Lords Prayer", "Your kingdom come." Young's Literal says, "Thy reign come." An even more literal translation states, "Come the kingdom of You." So if Christ taught his disciples to pray, "Your kingdom come," then it seems that the kingdom had not yet come or fully come and then it starts to get a little confusing. People are confused about this today. An example is Dispensationalists who believe Jesus brought the Kingdom in His ministry but when He ascended He took it back with Him. Thinking like the Jews, The Kingdom was supposed to be physical but the Jews rejected Him, so He instead died for the rest of the world, the Gentiles and went back to Heaven with The Kingdom. So they are waiting for the Gentile church to be raptured off the earth so Jesus will then bring The Kingdom back to the Jews and in a physical manner to be manifested on the earth. So to all that, I say we take a look at what the scriptures say of the timing and nature of The Kingdom.

In Mattew 6, Jesus gives a pattern for prayer. This isn't really His prayer as most of us think that it is. Jesus did not need to pray for forgiveness. This is a pattern, a blueprint for prayer. The opening lines teach family connection and privilege. "Our Father" points to many who are in the Body and our brothers and sisters. Asking God to let His name be hallowed is to ask to make His name to be Holy to us. Let us never forget how Awesome and Holy our Father really is.

Let's get these two phrases back into context. If you know anything about this podcast it should be that Marcuss is big on context. Context is king when reading the Bible and know this, a text without a context is just a con. So let's look at a couple of phrases that the Modern Evangelical Industrial False New Breed Complex like to toss around. New wine is usually a new move of The Spirit and you need to get on board or get left behind. Moving from glory to glory is usually tied to one degree of anointing to the next. The thing is, you won't find that in the Bible! These two phrases have something in common and it isn't you. It's Jesus and the New Covenant.

The majority of the Western Church believes in "The Last Days" or "End Times". As discussed before on this podcast this view is in the Futurist camp and the majority of beliefs stem from Dispensational Premillennialism which is not even quite 200 years old. In this sermon, Marcuss presents rethinking "The Last Days" according to what the Bible teaches. In this episode, Marcuss takes a look at a couple of texts that are often misapplied when it comes to The Holy Spirit. Such as Paul and the 12 in Acts 19. Obviously, these men needed a baptism of The Holy Spirit because Paul gave it to them. Yeah, but let's look at the text in context! These men weren't Christians yet because they did know Jesus so Paul ministers to them! Bring all that back to some things Jesus did and said and see what is happening in the upper room in its proper context. These are things that need to be taught better because too many are confused by bad teachings on this subject. The whole point is wrapped in this, you don't need to be praying and seeking something which has already been given to you!

If we are going to understand the Bible in order to Rethink many things we have been taught, we must have some understanding of Hermeneutics. These things include seeing the Bible as a whole. That is, we must know the Old in order to fully understand the New. In this, we can apply "The Analogy of Faith", which is, scripture interprets scripture. And probably the most overlooked principle of all, "Audience Relevance".

In this sermon, Marcuss takes a look at one of the most popular and probably most misunderstood parables of Jesus. The rich man and Lazarus is said to be a literal account of two men by some, while others disagree and insist that it is indeed a parable. However, the majority agree that it's about the afterlife of man and that it speaks of Heaven and Hell. Perhaps we should rethink that and keep it within its context. After all, there is no mention of resurrection and judgment. Plus, Hades is not Hell, it is the grave. At best, this is a parable about an intermediate state, which many will say isn't real according to Church tradition. So what is it about then? Remember, a text without a context is just a con.

This is part two in rethinking the use of creation in Romans 8. We have seen the examples used in scripture of the creation of a set apart people of the Old Covenant and now, the saints, of the New Covenant. This is obviously an eschatological text but is it future to us or was it future to the original audience? That's what Marcuss explores in this episode. Was the earth actually cursed or was it, man? Is creation in Romans 8 the world then or another creation? Since we know creation and creature can refer to other things such as the creation of Israel and the Old Covenant can this then be what Paul is referring to? If so, what does it mean for the revealing of the children/sons of God? Because who needs the revealing of the sons of God if this is referring to a future last day? Could it be the faithful remnant of Old Covenant children who have trusted in Christ transitioning from the Old to the New? Identity in Christ is important. If you died to who you once were and born again as a new creation how can you settle for being a "sinner saved by grace"? The word "saint" is used over 60 times in scripture in reference to Christians. There's no one who is more "saintly" than the other, even the most obscure believer is as much a saint as the Apostle Paul! Make no mistake about it, God's word declares you are new, born again, dead to sin, alive in Christ and a saint!

Seriously this is light-hearted but it is truthful. What do no gimmicks, no agenda mean most of the time? What kind of people does it attract? Besides all that what are some things preachers do that they should probably stop doing? Why do they always want us to repeat after them? What is this biblical Simeon says? Is there a reason behind that? Sometimes, yes, there is. What about the Holy Spirit interruption in the middle of the sermon they have to announce? Or the hey did you know...insert catchy buzz convention phrase. Can I get an amen?! Somebody help me out! Do they really need the affirmation that bad? Why can't we just preach the word and not care about being relevant?

In the last and final teaching of this topic, we look at the promise from God to create a new "heaven and earth". Isaiah 65 and 66 give us a glimpse at what is going on and we see that this cannot be referring to an eternal state but a period in human history. And in comparing that with what is described in Revelation 21 and 22, the scene really looks and sounds completely different than that of the futurist position. Behold, we live in the new heaven and earth now.

Last week we went through several texts that mentioned "heaven and earth" in apocalyptic language referring to nations, mainly Israel. Ending in 2 Peter 3 and starting there this week, we are encountered with the go-to text on the future demise of the world. But is that actually the case here? Peter says to recall and remember the prophets. What did the often speak on besides the coming Messiah? In this teaching, we explore the use of "heaven and earth" pertaining to the covenants, the Old and the New. What was old was becoming obsolete and soon to pass away. "Heaven and earth" was to pass away as well. Jesus said this Himself but also that it would happen within His generation.

This is it, the ending of Matthew 24. From the destruction of the Temple to the Parousia of Christ, the lives of those early Christians were dependant upon their watchfulness. They were to be watching for their Lord's coming in judgment, the day of the Lord, upon apostate Israel. They were to always be watching and praying that they would be able to escape the coming judgment of Jerusalem. And to drive home the need of watchfulness, the Lord gives His disciples a parable to contrast the difference there would be between those who were watching and those who were not.

Every time we read the phrase "heavens and earth" our minds think of the physical literal places we read of in Gen 1:1 and the earth in which we live but that's simply not the case with every instance throughout scripture. This is part one (out of three) of teaching on a small portion of scripture and we are going to look at this more in depth to get a better understanding. The reason is not only for us to get a better understanding of God's word but also because I'm going to make a statement that I believe is true and I need to prove that to you with the scriptures. Working through this section of the Lord's discourse, we find the famous "left behind" text's that many dispensationalists and rapture advocates use for "the end of time". Simply reading this slowly and thinking one can see that Jesus is simply saying that the day will like it was in the days of Noah. So ask, what happened back then? The flood came, removed the wicked and Noah, the righteous, remained. Noah was left behind! Along with this are other texts to compare and consider to see that Jesus was not talking about any type of "rapture" in the future nor in the first-century generation. No, the Olivet Discourse, in its entirety, all points to an event happening within that generation. The end of the Old Covenant Age.

Quick heads up, verse 35 has not been dealt with since the phrase "heaven and earth" is used and said to pass away. This is an idiom and Marcuss has dealt with it in two previous episodes and there will be more to come in the "Rethinking" sermons.
Verse 36 in The Olivet Discourse is said by some to be the dividing line and the escape clause to others. Without any changing of language or heads up of switching from a localized first-century prophecy to a far off distant end of the world event, people debate that Christ is speaking of two different events. To others, even if He isn't, He said He didn't even know when so what's the point? The point is you simply can not divide this section up by chopping it in two. Marcuss will give the arguments that people give but he will also give the argument that makes sense and by using the Bible, compares scripture with scripture to show how Jesus is talking about one single event in history that has already happened.

The most significant event in human history happened around 30 AD. Men have tried to say its myth and legend but eyewitness accounts speak otherwise. Men's lives were changed as well as history and these men gave their lives. Jesus overcame death and defeated the devil. This Palm Sunday we take a look at the foundational feast in the Old Testament, The Passover. The feasts were appointed times for the Israelites that served as rehearsals. That is, these were types and shadows. The Passover and its lamb, as the type, pointed to something greater, the anti-type, Jesus our Passover Lamb and Redeemer.

In part one Marcuss took a look at what the main emphasis is on Biblical death and resurrection. In this episode, He takes a look at when the Bible says the resurrection is to take place. The books of Daniel, Matthew and Acts speak of this event. Daniel and Matthew are close to identical in wording when speaking of the destruction of the Temple and Jerusalem, a historical event we know took place in 70 Ad. Paul proclaims in Acts that Old Covenant Israel's hope was "the resurrection" and we can see this when we understand the phrases "this age" and "the age to come". He then states that there was a resurrection that was "about to be" or take place within the First-Century. Could a future event of physical bodies taken out of the graves be a misunderstanding and something that was to take place spiritually in the First-Century "at the end of the ages"?

All of us have inconsistencies in our theology and that's okay because no one will probably ever have a perfect theology outside of the essential doctrines of the Christian faith. Few, though, seem a little so out of line that they simply do not make sense and resurrection is one of those. First off, Marcuss is not speaking about the literal physical resurrection of Christ. Paul makes it clear that if our Lord has not risen then our faith is in vain (1 Cor 15:14). Once up for consideration is the physical out of the grave "general resurrection" held by many Futurists that happens at "the last day" along with "the day of judgment". So to understand Biblical resurrection is to understand actual Biblical death and the emphasis that is throughout the narrative of the entire Bible. What happened in the garden and what is God doing and trying to restore throughout the course of the First Testament? Who and what is it pointing to and redeeming for humanity? Is this spiritual or physical in nature?

Many of us go back to God resting after creating when we think of the Sabbath day. However, by the time God instituted The Law and Moses wrote the creation account God had rested and the setting apart of the day for Israel's observance was 2,500 years after creation. The Pharisees accused Jesus' disciples of breaking the Sabbath, among many other things. This, of course, was their man-made oral tradition that burdened and had men serving the Sabbath, not God's Law. And here we are today with many thinking the same things under the same burdens and stresses instead of rest and joy. Are we obligated to observe the Sabbath? Many are surprised to find out that not one Biblical text commands the observance of the Sabbath upon man before the Exodus nor since Pentecost! That's because of a mixture of Law and Gospel and not rightly handling the word of truth. This side of the cross Jesus is our Sabbath rest, the bread of life, the way, the truth, and the life!

Throughout this podcast, Marcuss has talked a lot about "Preterism". This is an eschatological (last things) view and the word is from a Latin word that simply means past. Simply put, this is a view that can say some, most or all eschatological prophecies in scripture have been fulfilled and are past. Although this is gaining much traction it has become a broad umbrella term like "charismatic". And like any doctrinal view, there are fringes of craziness out there. Why were Adam and Eve banished from the garden? How many animals did God tell Noah to take on the ark? Who cut Samson's hair? How many wise men were there? Was Thomas the only one that doubted the resurrection of Christ? Was Paul only Saul before his conversion? Did God promise never to destroy the world again or never to destroy it again with a flood? Last time we took a look at how being "left behind" is misused from Matthew 24, the history of "the rapture", a proper futurist interpretation of 1 Thessalonians 4 and ended with "audience relevance". So this is where we pick up. What did Pauls message to the Thessalonians mean to them when they received this letter? Why would God send a word of encouragement to them about the relief of their troubles if it were to come some 2,000 years later? What was their hope and what did that mean to them, not us? It's important to read the bible in this way to get a proper understanding of the context. Sure, there is an application for us but it was not written to us but for us. In this way, we can get a better understanding of what Paul was talking about and how the Thessalonians received the truths in this letter. So we get two interpretations, one with first-century fulfillment and another that started then and continues today with all those who come to Christ through faith.

This part of the Olivet Discourse has had many for years debating and changing words to fit their views. Some, such as C.S. Lewis, call this part the most embarrassing verse of the Bible and that since Jesus was wrong, His Disciples were themselves delusional. That should make one wonder if, in fact, Jesus was wrong (which He was not), what else could He have been wrong about? Why trust the Apostles teaching and the inspiration of scripture if Jesus was wrong? It should be clear He was addressing the current generation of those alive when He uttered these words. All other uses of the phrase "this generation" meant so, so why wouldn't that be the case here? If Jesus meant a future far off group of people He simply would have said "that generation" instead of "this".

We all know the scenes, people vanishing, clothes on the ground, cars, and planes crashing and news reports from around the world! Movies and books have branded this into our minds and in pop culture. The rapture! Some speak of a secret one and then one to follow. Others say there isn't one and those who explain what the text really means describe it in a totally different way than many have heard and in the future via the postmill way. This is part 1 on this topic and Marcuss hits upon Matthew 24 first, in the days of Noah. Who was left behind? Noah! Next up, history. Did you know this "doctrine" is not even 200 years old? It comes from "the father of dispensationalism and futurism", John Nelson Darby. Something so newly discovered should be questioned. Then the not so well know postmill interpretation is explained to give the futurist explanation. Finally, at the end, Marcuss discusses audience relevance and how this principle in interpreting is highly dismissed and overlooked. Looking at 1 Thessalonians, we need to ask what the text meant to the original audience when reading the words of Paul. Scripture first and foremost meant something to whom it was written to, not to those 2,000 years removed (although that does not mean we can not apply it). This is laying the groundwork for next week where we will be looking at the text used for the rapture in its context and to see what Paul was saying to those in the first century and what it meant to them. Then we will have a better understanding of what is going on. You might be surprised.

Again, working through this discourse, we keep in mind the context! Who asked the questions and who is Jesus answering? What will be the sign? What does coming in the clouds mean biblically? Is it all about Glory or all about judgment? Do the two go together and represent presence? These are the things to consider while reading this section of text and keeping it in its immediate and surrounding context. Also, by using the analogy of faith (scripture interprets scripture) we can look at how this is Old Testament language that our Lord would use and His Disciples would understand, seeing a fulfillment of these things at hand within their lives in the first century.

In this sermon/teaching, Marcuss addresses what the tithe really is according to scripture. Obviously, we know that tithing is biblical but not everything biblical is applicable for us today. The bible is clear that tithing and giving are two separate things. Tithing was a taxation system for Israel under the Mosiac Law and giving is voluntary according to one's choice and heart motivation. Simply put, tithing is not required to those under the New Covenant! However, grace should lead to grace but there is no set percentage and certainly no command that is binding to us today.

The great tribulation is something that has been at the center of the eschatological debate for years. Dispensationalists demand it is future and is the 70th week of Daniels vision where the church age is a parenthesis between the 69th and 70th week. In other words, God pressed paused and went with plan b, the church, and at some point (the fullness of the Gentiles) will unpause and the end will come. All that being said, allowing scripture to interpret scripture (and looking at historical writings outside of it), when we read the words of Jesus answering the questions of the disciples in the first century, the evidence is clear, the time of great tribulation would occur in their lifetime and an event this bad is to never happen again. In other words, there is no indication in scripture that the great tribulation is future for us (2,000 years removed from the time Jesus spoke of it) it has happened, John was part of it (Rev 1) and we can see that Matthew 24 in its entirety was concerning the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple in 70 AD.

Marcuss has covered the topic of Zacchaeus already but this is a Sunday teaching that is filled with a lot more information regarding this section of text in Luke's Gospel. We have all grown up with children's church or Sunday school versions of bible stories and this has allowed us to come to a text later in life with presuppositions and leaves us to those assumed thoughts. The nature, then, is assuming we already know the story, skim the text, and move along. Although in this section there are only 10 verses there are many details Luke is giving that is important to consider and many that aren't there that we have been told are there! We will see by comparing children's bibles and the various translations that Zacchaeus was a righteous man living in John's baptism of repentance and Jesus vindicating him in front of the crowd, instead of us taking the crowds accusation and Zacchaeus converting without any preaching or teaching from Jesus at all!

This is the fourth part in understanding Matthew 24 from a Preterist approach/understanding (fulfilled prophecy). We have been examining the answer(s) Jesus gives. To whom is He talking? We need to remember the principle of audience relevance when interpreting the Bible to help us better understand what is taking place. Of course, many see what Jesus is describing as "signs of the times", however, we must ask, did the Disciples and the rest of their contemporaries experience any of these things? If so, what did that mean for them and what does it mean for us?
The biggest question in this section of text is what is the "abomination of desolation"? By allowing scripture to interpret scripture, we will be able to get an understanding of what that is, esp from the book of Daniel. We will also look at secular and church historical accounts to find the answer.

Two men, parallels, contrasts, type, anti-type, these are the things Paul lays out in this section of Romans chapter 5. Marcuss has already "talked" through this, so here is a more in-depth look into these particular verses. As much as we understand our union with Christ and being 'in Christ", it is as equally important to understand the union of humanity with Adam and being 'of or in Adam' just as much to get an even better understanding 'headship'. In doing so, our grasp on understanding being born with the identification of sin, with the knowledge of good and evil, to being born again and being made a new creation and placed 'in Christ' (identification with Him) becomes even more foundational to 'the problem' and 'the solution' that is a part of The Gospel.

Alright, so we have looked at the problem, sin and our identity with sin. Jesus did come to forgive sins, however, forgiveness of sins was something that already existed in the Old Covenant. In Jesus, we have the Gospel and it is way more than forgiveness of our sins. Yes, forgiveness is huge but in the Old Covenant, the identification with sin remained. Jesus not only offers forgiveness but reconciliation and redemption. To be made a new creation means to be a new creation and that changes our identification with sin to that of righteousness, in Christ.

Matthew 7 is used out of context so much. Seriously, it drives me crazy sometimes. Jesus is speaking to Jews under The Law, people who believed in works. He's also speaking about false prophets and disciples. In other words, He isn't speaking to Christians or about Christians. Jesus would be a liar to tell a real Christan that 'He never knew them'. Remember, a text without a context is just a con.

Alright, since we have to establish that we are to cast out the slave women and are not under The Law, that means the whole Law including The Ten Commandments! Still, today, many suggest we should still have monuments of the big 10 on display. Most are sincere and have good intention but the question is, "Does the world really going to get it anyway?". Have we not been given the ministry of reconciliation to minister to those whom the Father has restored favor? A little discussion of all these things are in this episode, along with what exactly does The Law of Christ/Love mean? Are there still instructions, commands, and all that within the New Covenant for Christians today to follow? If so, why do so many fail to see them and break them?

Marcuss starts off this episode talking about Andy Stanley and the controversy surrounding a couple of his recent statements. To be fair Andy is right, although maybe he should have worded things a little differently. Nevertheless, people would still have things to say. Do we need the Old Testament? Absolutely! Without it, the New Testament would be even more complicated to understand. To understand the New is to understand the Old with its types and shadows pointing to the promise of Jesus. However, do we need to mix the two? Rightly dividing Law and Gospel is essential, mixing the two is bondage, death, and exactly what the first-century Church was fighting. Looking at Apostle Paul's statements in Galatians 4:21-31, Marcuss explains what exactly Paul is telling the church in Galatia, to cast out the slave woman because descendants of Abraham are of Faith, not by lineage! Therefore, the Jews trying to bring the Gentiles into The Law are actually sons of Hagar and, like her son, slaves.

Consider this episode part 2 of "Heaven and Earth Have Passed Away" from way back at the beginning. I thought we could dive a little bit more in exploring the phrase "heaven and earth" and see the different types in scripture. There are more than just the actual physical literal heavens and earth in the bible. The Temple and the nation of Israel were talked about in the same manner and Jesus said the law would remain until all was accomplished and heaven and earth passed away? So which is it, are we still under law or did "heaven and earth" pass away?

There are a lot of ideas and different ways of thinking when it comes to fasting today. Some believe it makes them more anointed or spiritually powerful. Others give things up to give more time to God. Are these even the biblical definition of fasting? The Law only required it once a year and it was to have you remember your sins. The Pharisees fasted twice a week to be righteous. John's disciples ask Jesus why He and His disciples aren't fasting like the rest of them. Let's examine what Jesus' answer means in context and in light of what we have been blessed with in the New Covenant. In doing so we will be able to determine if the old can mix with the new and if fasting is compatible with the New Covenant believer.

Here we continue with our study through the book of Colossians. Paul starts to shed a little more light in chapter 2 on the heresy that was taking place at Colossae which included philosophies, empty deciet, Gnosticism, and Jewish mysticism. Paul assures the readers at Colossae they are filled with Christ and all things are in Him so he urges them to remember what they have been taught.

This is the third part in understanding Matthew 24 from a Preterist approach/understanding. We have had the primer and looked at the Disciples questions, now we examine the Answer(s) Jesus gives. To whom is He talking? We need to remember the principal of audience relevance when interpreting the Bible and this will help us better understand what is taking place. Of course, many see what Jesus is describing as "signs of the times", however, we must ask, did the Disciples and the rest of their contemporaries experience any of these things? The Gospel or Good News of Jesus Christ is simplistic but also overly complicated to some. To fully articulate it to someone we need answers to questions that will arise. In order to understand why Jesus is the Good News, we need to understand why we need to be redeemed. Often, people know they sin and sinning makes them a sinner but why? What is it about the fall and humanity that created this issue in order for our creator God to reconcile us to Him through Christ? As we start to go through Matthew 24 we first have to understand what was going through the disciple's minds and the question or questions that asked Jesus. Remember, they have been with Jesus, they have heard Him speaking judgment that is to come to Jerusalem, and now Jesus has just said not a single stone of the temple would be left! So, with all these things in mind, and the disciple's, we now have to ask, what are they asking exactly? Is it a long off future return of Jesus or something else?

17 weeks later and here we are, at the end of the letter to the Ephesians. Looking at the section of "the whole armor of God", we find interesting words, phrases, and an emphasis from the Apostle Paul. Some of the words and phrases do not mean what many think they mean. In fact, reading with the first-century context in mind, we find some things for the church of Ephesus that they were facing and we are not, something that would come to an end in 70 AD. Furthermore, keep in mind that the culture and different religions saw the body, the literal flesh and blood as evil, even rejecting the incarnation of Jesus because of this. Our battle is not against the skin, bones, and blood of humanity, but rather the desires of the flesh that can influence culture and rulers of that culture.

I made a mistake in part of this when mentioning the time of Jesus' birth and the start of His ministry. So many numbers and talking fast can do that and I apologize. However, this does not mess up the overall timeline and explanation!
Part 2 of the Eschatology Series takes a look at Daniel 9 and the 70-week prophecy (or 490 years). Dispensationalists misinterpret this prophecy and say the church is in a parenthesis time because God has paused the prophetic timeline. Marcuss explains this error and shows how to see this prophecy more clearly and how it has been fulfilled already! Yes, the 490 years or 70-weeks of Daniel are over and in the past!

There are debates. There are one-sided camps. Certain understandings have implications that can bring misconceptions and distorted views. Sovereignty is one heavy topic and complicated. Jesus, however, came to reveal the Father and all of His Goodness. So, does His sovereignty control every single thing? Does God hand out cancer and become the author of evil in the world? What are the implications of this view and did Jesus reveal that or exemplify something else? Maybe God is good and, therefore, that goodness is simple.
