1-15-2023 – A New Beginning – Genesis 9:1-17
Genesis 8:18-22 nlt ~ So Noah, his wife, and his sons and their wives left the boat. 19 And all of the
large and small animals and birds came out of the boat, pair by pair. 20 Then Noah built an altar to
the Lord, and there he sacrificed as burnt offerings the animals and birds that had been approved for
that purpose. [e] 21 And the Lord was pleased with the aroma of the sacrifice and said to himself, “I will
never again curse the ground because of the human race, even though everything they think or
imagine is bent toward evil from childhood. I will never again destroy all living things. 22 As long as the
earth remains, there will be planting and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night.”
nugget — New Beginnings in line with God’s will – require sacrifice.
Nutshell: All of God’s promises are true. God offers a New Beginnings to ALL – by His grace
through faith in the sacrifice of Jesus, that paid the penalty for our sin!
And He is still in the business of offering New Beginnings for His children that will respond
with obedience, worship, and sacrifice!
Genesis 9:1(NLT) 1 Then God blessed Noah and his sons and told them, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill
the earth.”
Genesis 9:2–4 (NLT) 2 All the animals of the earth, all the birds of the sky, all the small animals that
scurry along the ground, and all the fish in the sea will look on you with fear and terror. I have placed
them in your power. 3 I have given them to you for food, just as I have given you grain and
vegetables. (Amen!) 4 But you must never eat any meat that still has the lifeblood in it.
• Blood was the sign of mercy for Israel at the first Passover (Exodus 12:13)
• Blood sealed God’s covenant with Israel (Exodus 24:8)
• Blood sanctified the altar (Exodus 29:12)
• Blood set aside the priests (Exodus 29:20)
• Blood made atonement for God’s people (Exodus 30:10)
• Blood justifies us (Romans 5:9)
• Blood brings redemption (Ephesians 1:7)
• Blood brings peace with God (Colossians 1:20)
• Blood cleanses us (Hebrews 9:14 and 1 John 1:7)
• Blood gives entrance to God’s holy place (Hebrews 10:19)
• Blood sanctifies us (Hebrews 13:12)
• Blood enables us to overcome Satan (Revelation 12:11)
• Blood sealed the new covenant ( Matthew 26:28 )
Matthew 26:27-28 (NIV) 27 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them,
saying, “Drink from it, all of you. 28 This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for
the forgiveness of sins.
Genesis 9:5–6 (NLT) 5 “And I will require the blood of anyone who takes another person’s life. If a
wild animal kills a person, it must die. And anyone who murders a fellow human must die. 6 If anyone
takes a human life, that person’s life will also be taken by human hands. For God made human
beings in his own image.
Warren Wiersbe wrote: “Government was established by God because the human heart is evil.
(Gen 6:5) and the fear of punishment can help to restrain would-be law breakers. The law can
restrain but it can’t regenerate; only the grace of God can change the human heart (Jer. 31:31-34,
Heb. 8:7-13).”
Genesis 9:7(NLT) 7 Now be fruitful and multiply, and repopulate the earth.”
Genesis 9:8-11 ~ 8 Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him: 9 “I now establish my covenant
with you and with your descendants after you 10 and with every living creature that was with you—the
birds, the livestock and all the wild animals, all those that came out of the ark with you—every living
creature on earth. 11 I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be destroyed by the
waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.”
God initiates, sustains, and completes the covenant. The covenant is reassurance to the earth’s
families that they would not again experience the horrors of a devastating worldwide flood.
Genesis 9:12-17 ~ 12 And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and
you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: 13 I have set my
rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 Whenever I
bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, 15 I will remember my covenant
between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a
flood to destroy all life. 16 Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the
everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.”
17 So God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant I have established between me and all life
on the earth.”
Isaiah 54:9–10 NIV ~ For this is like the waters of Noah to Me; for as I have sworn that the waters of
Noah would no longer cover the earth, so have I sworn that I would not be angry with you, nor rebuke
you. For the mountains shall depart and the hills be removed, but My kindness shall not depart from
you, nor shall My covenant of peace be removed, says the LORD, who has mercy on you.
Isa. 43:2 nkjv ~ “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they
shall not overflow you”.
Nutshell: All of God’s promises are true. God offers a New Beginning to ALL – by His grace

by faith with obedience, worship, and sacrifice!
Genesis 7:11-24 NIV – 11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, on the seventeenth day of the
second month—on that day all the springs of the great deep burst forth, and the floodgates of
the heavens were opened. 12 And rain fell on the earth forty days and forty nights.
13 On that very day Noah and his sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth, together with his wife and the
wives of his three sons, entered the ark. 14 They had with them every wild animal according to
its kind, all livestock according to their kinds, every creature that moves along the ground
according to its kind and every bird according to its kind, everything with wings. 15 Pairs of all
creatures that have the breath of life in them came to Noah and entered the ark. 16 The animals
going in were male and female of every living thing, as God had commanded Noah. Then the
LORD shut him in.
17 For forty days the flood kept coming on the earth, and as the waters increased they lifted the
ark high above the earth. 18 The waters rose and increased greatly on the earth, and the ark
floated on the surface of the water. 19 They rose greatly on the earth, and all the high
mountains under the entire heavens were covered. 20 The waters rose and covered the
mountains to a depth of more than fifteen cubits.
21 Every living thing that moved on land perished—birds, livestock, wild animals, all the
creatures that swarm over the earth, and all mankind. 22 Everything on dry land that had the
breath of life in its nostrils died. 23 Every living thing on the face of the earth was wiped out;
people and animals and the creatures that move along the ground and the birds were wiped
from the earth. Only Noah was left, and those with him in the ark. 24 The waters flooded the
earth for a hundred and fifty days.
Ezekiel 18:23 NLT – 23 “Do you think that I like to see wicked people die? says the Sovereign
LORD. Of course not! I want them to turn from their wicked ways and live. VS. 31-32 – 31 Put
all your rebellion behind you, and find yourselves a new heart and a new spirit. For why should
you die, O people of Israel? 32 I don’t want you to die, says the Sovereign LORD. Turn back and
live!
C.S. Lewis once said, IF we don’t have an understanding of or grasp God’s Holiness… how will
we be amazed at His Amazing Grace?!
Isaiah 6:3 – Holy, Holy, Holy is the LORD GOD Almighty.
1 Samuel 2:2 NCV – “There is no one holy like the LORD. There is no God but you; there is no
Rock like our God.
Psalm 96:9 ESV – Worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness; tremble before him, all the
earth!
1 Peter 1:13-16 ESV – 13 So prepare your minds for action and exercise self-control. Put all your
hope in the gracious salvation that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the
world. 14 So you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of
living to satisfy your own desires. You didn’t know any better then. 15 But now you must be holy
in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy. 16 For the Scriptures say, “You must be
holy because I am holy.” (Leviticus 20:26)
Genesis 8:1-NIV – 1 But God remembered Noah and all the wild animals and the livestock that
were with him in the ark, and he sent a wind over the earth, and the waters receded. 2 Now
the springs of the deep and the floodgates of the heavens had been closed, and the rain had
stopped falling from the sky. 3 The water receded steadily from the earth. At the end of the
hundred and fifty days the water had gone down, 4 and on the seventeenth day of the seventh
month the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat. 5 The waters continued to recede until
the tenth month, and on the first day of the tenth month the tops of the mountains became
visible.
Genesis 8:6-12 NIV – 6 After forty days Noah opened a window he had made in the ark 7 and
sent out a raven, and it kept flying back and forth until the water had dried up from the earth.
8 Then he sent out a dove to see if the water had receded from the surface of the ground. 9 But
the dove could find nowhere to perch because there was water over all the surface of the
earth; so it returned to Noah in the ark. He reached out his hand and took the dove and
brought it back to himself in the ark.
10 He waited seven more days and again sent out the dove from the ark. 11 When the dove
returned to him in the evening, there in its beak was a freshly plucked olive leaf! Then Noah
knew that the water had receded from the earth. 12 He waited seven more days and sent the
dove out again, but this time it did not return to him.
Genesis 8:13-19 NIV – 13 By the first day of the first month of Noah’s six hundred and first
year, the water had dried up from the earth. Noah then removed the covering from the ark
and saw that the surface of the ground was dry.
14 By the twenty-seventh day of the second month the earth was completely dry. 15 Then God
said to Noah, 16 “Come out of the ark, you and your wife and your sons and their wives. 17 Bring
out every kind of living creature that is with you—the birds, the animals, and all the creatures
that move along the ground—so they can multiply on the earth and be fruitful and increase in
number on it.” 18 So Noah came out, together with his sons and his wife and his sons’
wives. 19 All the animals and all the creatures that move along the ground and all the
birds—everything that moves on land—came out of the ark, one kind after another.
Genesis 8:20-22 NIV – 20 Then Noah built an altar to the LORD and, taking some of all the clean
animals and clean birds, he sacrificed burnt offerings on it. 21 The LORD smelled the pleasing
aroma and said in his heart: “Never again will I curse the ground because of humans, even
though every inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood. And never again will I
destroy all living creatures, as I have done. 22 “As long as the earth endures, seedtime and
harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease.”
What Does Christmas Really Mean?It’s the Fulfillment of God’s Promise in Genesis 3:15! The Birth of Jesus!

We are not our own! We must serve/obey our Master. We serve/obey out of gratitude and love to the One who first loved us and gave Himself for us!

The Christian life is a supernatural life. It, like salvation, is a gift from God in Christ. He initiates it and He provides its power. We must respond in repentance and faith, both initially and daily.

Don't play around with sin. Label it for what it is. Turn from it; flee from it. Don't put yourself into the place of temptation.

Sin in the believer is an addiction that can be broken, but it takes knowledge of the gospel, the presence of the Spirit, submission to the Spirit, time, effort, and resolve. (Sin is no longer your master, but we still battle with our sin nature.)
