This fun, casual talk with Jonathan Wilson - the man behind GTA's Robert De Negro - is also a comprehensive look at his contributions to the franchise. Along with insights from the man himself, this podcast features every single track he performed for in full (and even a gem from his early days).
Besides GTA, Jon and I discuss hip hop, music in general, the concept of a Robert De Negro comeback and more!

This final part of my LucasArts trilogy takes an in-depth look at the innovative iMUSE system. iMUSE was instrumental to the development of dynamic and interactive music through the 90s, and I welcome back Peter McConnell and Clint Bajakian to discuss its impact. I'm also pleased to present more insight from the incomparable George Sanger, who wrote dynamic soundtracks for games like Capture the Flag and Wing Commander (before the creation of iMUSE). Along the way, all three guests take an extended look at PC sound chips, and how they evolved across the digital audio revolution.
I'm very pleased to present this jam-packed conclusion to a long and rewarding series of LucasArts podcasts. It's been some time in the making, but I'm back! Expect more Sound Test documentaries in the future, including further insight from George and Clint. My next episode will concentrate on the music of thatgamecompany, with their principle composers - Vincent Diamante and Austin Wintory.

For this bonus, it's my great honour to welcome Colin Anderson onto The Sound Test for a lengthy talk about Grand Theft Auto. Colin was heavily involved in the music and audio of the franchise in its early days, and we talk in-depth about his contributions to both GTA 1 and 2. At the end, we even fit in a little discussion of Crackdown - another game Colin worked on, which we both consider to have more than a few connections to Grand Theft Auto.
This is a real dream interview for me, as I consider the GTA franchise to be just about my favourite of all time; especially thanks to some of my earliest memories playing the original top-down classics that started it all. If you're familiar with their innovative radio stations and impressive bespoke tracks, this episode is guaranteed to please. We cover it all, from The Ballad of Chapped Lips Calhoun to the infectious funk of Stylus Exodus; from forgotten prog. rock stations to that pedestrian who shouts, "Dickwad!" whenever you drive past.
My inner child can hardly believe I'm releasing this particular episode, and I hope you enjoy it too!

In this second episode, I take a good long look at probably my favourite gaming genre - puzzles. As a result, I get caught up in the windmills of nostalgia while presenting a rich playlist of great VGM. And that's not all! I'm also more than happy to welcome Wabi Sabi Sound's Andrew Lackey onto the show for one of my most fascinating interviews, all about the audio of The Witness. Unfortunately, The Sound Test has been forced into a lengthy hiatus due to a very difficult personal situation I'm going through. Not only has my situation stopped me from working, but I don't even have access to my old equipment. It's not nice, and I wish I could keep the VGM going like I used to - but I'm far from done with The Sound Test. I miss it dearly, and still have many interviews to publish. So, I used my step-mother's laptop (yes!) to remaster this old show with Dale from the very beginning of 2019. That's why there are no pictures or anything fancy going on here - nevertheless, I hope you enjoy this time machine back to the past and I hope to see some of the old regulars in the LIVE chat!
Original description:
"Happy New Year! It's been one of the most insane festive periods for me this year, so I hope you guys understand as I land kind of slowly into the new year. From this episode, Dale and I will be a lot more regular and reliable with this show, and I have plenty of content planned for 2019. I will, of course, be keeping you updated through here, but until things develop, I hope you enjoy this latest episode of The Sound Test LIVE!"

In this completely off-the-cuff episode, I address some of the concerns that may have built up around The Sound Test in the past month or so. It's not all serious though, as pretty much all of this is the usual serving of VGM goodness, tinged with a little optimistic looking ahead.
It's been a tough time for the show, and myself lately, and I've occasionally posted some rather daft things that I regret. But, we're all surviving through a worldwide pandemic, and here I try to put a lot of that behind me and just get on with the game music glory.
Despite the fact that NONE of this show was planned, I hope you enjoy it!

Founded in 1982, LucasArts are among the best known and best loved game developers of the past four decades. Following on from my previous episode, this podcast is the second part of a dedicated LucasArts triple-bill. This time, I explore the company’s history, with returning guests Clint Bajakian and Peter McConnell. While Clint and Peter both proved invaluable to LucasArts through the 90s, and beyond, it’s a true honour to also be joined by George “The Fat Man” Sanger, a true VGM veteran with many more appearances to come in this season.

For my very final show of 2020, I go big with an absolute iceberg of a broadcast. Thanks to the listeners, the playlist is full of cold, icy, christmassy tunes, but I put a little twist on my personal choices this week. You'll meet various ghosts of my Christmases past, as I introduce you to the games that have been particularly exciting presents over the years.
Excitingly, I'm also joined for a LIVE chat by Matthew Smith; journalist, and producer of "Amiga Power: The Album with Attitude", which pays tribute to one of Britain's best loved gaming magazines and the Amiga VGM scene as a whole. It's a great talk, and this show also includes a couple of samples from the album itself!
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year everyone, and see you for more VGM celebration in 2021!

In this BONUS, I'm joined by Jay Tholen for an in-depth look at the music and audio of Hypnospace Outlaw.
An internet simulator set at the turn of the 21st century, Hypnospace Outlaw is one of my favourite games that I played in 2020. It's dripping in 90s nostalgia, and its keen sense of humour is colourful as you're invited into a faithful parody of online tropes from the time.
Most importantly for The Sound Test, the experience is utterly packed with original music. From MIDI-esque sample sets to entirely new genres, like Coolpunk, Hypnospace Outlaw never ceases to amaze with the sheer level of detail in its music. Through this podcast, you'll get more acquainted with The Chowder Man, jam out to some Klyfta and tap your toe to Redstryke - all while learning more about the lengths Jay Tholen went to in order to fill his game with musical life.

This episode revs into December with a look at some of the best known and best loved vehicles in games! From the Blue Falcon to Bowser's airships and everything between, this was a topic that could easily have several broadcasts dedicated to it.
Outside of planes, trains and automobiles, I take a step back from many of the show's regular features this week. As we approach 2021, I'm thinking of several ways I can reshuffle the format of The Sound Test; with one key word in mind - simplify. The features have been fun, but really we're all just here for great music. We'll see how things evolve!

No movie franchise has made a bigger impact on gaming than Star Wars, which boasts well over a hundred separate releases for practically every system that has ever existed. Adaptations of the much loved original trilogy, and its later sequels, have grown in sophistication with each passing year.
Since LucasArts was founded in 1982 by George Lucas himself, its connection to Star Wars runs deep. Therefore, their releases have always been celebrated as authentic and rich expansions on established lore, through loving storylines, varied gameplay and, naturally, incredible audio.
To help explore the franchise’s early days, I spoke to Paul Webb – best known for his work on Super Star Wars. From there, you can’t discuss the further growth of LucasArts through the 90s, and on into the naughties, without Clint Bajakian – and Peter McConnell – who both also composed for Indiana Jones. Between the four of us, we’ll cover the sound of Star Wars adaptations from the Nintendo Entertainment System up to the PlayStation 1 and PCs, when CD audio took over from chiptune.

No interview this week, but we do have a stacked playlist of sidekick celebration! I explore some of gaming's most well-known tagalongs, player 2s and assistants; all with the help of my wonderful regular listeners. You'll hear my own Top 5, along with a whole host of other great choices!
Besides the theme, this episode finally brings some concrete (and complex) answers to the VGM SongFight battle. Hopefully, it'll make more sense as the story unfurls, but you can rely on three strong news points this week, and a devilish round of the Sound Effects Showdown. The Sound Test welcomes yet another big interview guest this week, as Barry Leitch joins me for a chat about his whole legendary career. From his music and sound for a string of popular racing games to his intriguing work on children's toys, we cover a lot of interesting ground. It was fantastic to have Barry on the show, and I hope we talk again soon!
The theme for this week otherwise, though, is final bosses; main antagonists. Along with my own top five, we of course hear some great choices from listeners as we explore some of the most iconic and interesting end baddies of all time.

For this episode, I'm joined about halfway for a brand new chat with TDK. He's a regular name on my show, and one of the contributors to ST2, so it's fantastic to welcome him back to The Sound Test. This time, we catch up about his latest album - "Retrospect" - currently available through https://marktdkknight.bandcamp.com !
Besides my talk with TDK, I also take a look at various intriguing peripherals and bits of hardware that have popped up through the history of gaming. Whether it's Rez's Trance Vibrator or Donkey Konga's bongos, you'll hear about some of the most (and least) successful gadgets throughout the years.
Of course, we continue the VGM SongFight battle, move into a challenging round of the SFX Showdown and the News Cop seems particularly irate this week...

Since I'm away in Ireland this week, I've cooked up another old school ST remaster! This one's our third ever episode, from nearly two years ago.
For more recent Sound Test listeners, be prepared for a change in tone! Not only did my co-host, Dale, and I approach things a lot more casually, but I was a lot more ignorant of VGM as a whole. Really, I was at the beginning of my journey.
I hope these early days are fun to hear though, and it's interesting how many things come up as new to me that I later record in-depth podcasts about!

Besides the gastronomic glory, I take a look at three interesting developments for Quickfire News and the SFX Showdown continues with an ever-growing scoreboard. An untrustworthy interloper gets involved in the VGM SongFight, and Daisy spends the majority of the broadcast asleep on me.

As VGM lovers, we all come across tunes and soundtracks from games we've never played. In this episode, I explore my personal Top 5 games that, despite never playing, have excellent music. My regular listeners get in on the theme too, and plenty of recommendations are thrown around.
Otherwise, Quickfire News continues on strong with three new segments, while bookending rounds of the SFX Showdown should keep you on your feet. I also need the help of a new TTS guardian angel to pronounce one particular legend's name right.
In the VGM SongFight, Mario agrees that Rosalina's odd space signal is a worry, and suggests the help of an old family friend...

Besides a mic-levels blunder at the very beginning, this is one of my favourite Sound Test broadcasts ever.
Within, we celebrate incredible video game music largely brought to the table by my Discord members. Across the course of this episode, you'll hear how many of my regular listeners came to love VGM and the tunes that started their passion. Of course, I've got a Top 5 of my own formative choices, alongside new rounds of Quickfire News and the SFX Showdown.
Particularly special this week is a LIVE call-in interview from Jammin' Sam Miller; the man behind a string of impressive Donkey Kong Country restorations. We discuss his history with the franchise and music, dig a little into his restoration process and even hear about his composing work for an adaptation of War of the Worlds!
In the VGM SongFight battle, we discover that - just like an oft-ridiculed spin-off - Mario is Missing! And it's up to you if Rosalina can track him down or not for next week. Until then, I hope you enjoy this extra-stuffed playlist of VGM goodness and thank you to everyone who contributed choices!

Following on from my ST2 Racing Special, I take a look at some of my personal favourite racing games over the years. Unlike how I usually structure playlists, I've made this one follow a bit of a timeline. Across the course of the show, it dips in and out of different consoles, showing off their capabilities and general style.
Also, this show is shorter than most, coming in at about half length. I was very tired after hard work on ST2 this week but, oddly, it results in a surprisingly professional demeanour! Maybe I should always be a bit knackered before a broadcast...

From the oldest arcade cabinets, racing games have been incredibly popular. They’ve revved their way through just about every console and computer chip imaginable, and drifted around every audio innovation with ease. What was once a dedicated and focused profession has widened in scope, especially since the introduction of licensed music and the ever-increasing prevalence of orchestral instrumentation.
For this racing special, I spoke to three of the genre’s most prolific professionals. Firstly, from Lowrider Sound, I’m joined by Steve Collett, an industry legend, who has composed for series like MotoGP, curated licensed soundtracks and worked extensively in sound design. However, MotoGP later had bespoke soundtracks by Ian Livingstone, first credited in the racing genre on Formula 1 1999. Since then, Ian has received an Ivor Novello award, and helped set the tone for five further games in the series, alongside many others. While Ian wrote music for F1 through the first half of the 2010s, sound effects were handled by none other than Mark Knight – also known as TDK. Yet, Mark is no stranger to providing his own compositions for various racers, starting in 1995 with Cyberspeed before taking the F1 reigns himself twenty years later.

Unfortunately, Bethany's had to return to her homeland of Northern Ireland, so this is her second and final appearance - for now! In time, Bethany'll be back, and we'll continue on with more of my clumsy attempts at explaining VGM.
Until then, this is a fun, chaotic show that sees us both slowly lose our faculties thanks to some intense heat. A playlist full of interesting tracks from a variety of systems keeps up the energy though, and it's been fantastic to share the show with Bethany.
This week's playlist:

Allen and/or Sean Hiler [Jazz Jackrabbit 2] End of Game – Rick Fox [NBA Jam: Tournament Edition] Another Medium – Toby Fox [Undertale] Gobber Groover – Disasterpiece [Neutralite] 02 – Ben Daglish [Hades Nebula] Title Theme – Ichiro Hada [Dino Land] Title – Ian Howe [The Humans] The Woods of Light - (P2) Beginning – Eric Chevalier [Rayman 2: The Great Escape] Escape! For Bethany Wilson's very first appearance as a Sound Test co-host, we sail through a playlist that (clumsily) provides a bit of a history lesson!
As best as I can with wine, I try to explain some of the fundamentals of VGM and how it evolved. All the way, we hear some prime examples from a variety of chips, with a bit of an accidental concentration on the SNES. We also spend plenty of time in the modern era, and chat a bit about the use of licensed music and orchestras.
So, all-in-all, this is a packed episode! But, the whole thing stays relaxed and fun, and it was wonderful to welcome Bethany onto the show.
This week's playlist:
Funk Goes On – Hidenori Shoji [Yakuza Kiwami] Final Fall – Jukio Kallio & Daniel Hagstrom [Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout] Title – Matt Furniss [Torvak the Warrior] Athletic – Koji Kondo [Super Mario Bros. 3] Section 1 BGM – Tim & Geoff Follin [Silver Surfer] Cavern – Tim & Geoff Follin [Plok] Staff Roll – Dean Evans [The Flintstones] Codis Mu VI – [Star Trek: The Next Generation – Future’s Past] Goemon Impact! – Michiru Yamane [Ganbare Goemon 2 – Kitretsu Shogun Magginesu!] 13 – Koji Hayama [Kaizou Chounin Shubibinman 3: Ikai no Princess] Credits – Shigehisa H. and/or Junichi Saito [Knight Rider Special] Stage Theme 4 – Hirohiko Takayama [Lemmings] Escape – Jaroslav Beck and Summer Haze [Beat Saber] Super Mario Galaxy – Mahito Yokota and/or Koji Kondo [Super Mario Galaxy] Halo – Martin O’Donnell and Michael Salvatori [Halo] Corneria – Hajime Hirasawa [Star Fox] Bay City Disguised – Garry Schyman [Destroy All Humans! 2] The Waters Above – Vincent Diamante [Sky: Children of the Light] Mrs. Sadie Adler, Widow – Woody Jackson [Red Dead Redemption 2] Nick’s Bass is OLD – TDK [Duke Nukem: Total Meltdown]

Due to not getting internet installed in my new home until August, I'm unable to stream LIVE shows until then! Instead, here's another remastered version of The Sound Test's second show of all time!
This time, I speak an unbelievable amount of bollocks. There are parts of this episode that really make me cringe, but I think longtime listeners will enjoy hearing some of my naivety and growth as a VGM fan. Really, I was at the very beginning of my journey! In particular, I'm especially embarrassed about my totally misread pronunciation of "Clark Aboud" as "Clark Abound" - sorry Clark! Fortunately, after two interviews with the man himself, I think we're cool!
Dale brings his usual unique perspective to the proceedings and, other than a few ignorant comments on my part, this is another great, relaxed evening with the two of us. All the chat aside, the playlist stays strong this week with a number of banging choices and odd gems side-by-side. However, it's worth mentioning that there are several tracks/games on this playlist that would later become repeated favourites of the show. Apologies for some of the replays!
Previously, this episode was only available to patrons, but I've given it a clean up and posted it here ready for the usual stream time. Essentially, I've replaced the music with better quality rips and tweaked the volumes of our chat slightly.
This week's playlist:
C418 - Haunt Muskie [Minecraft]
Norihiko Hibino & Cynthia Harrell - Snake Eater [Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater]
Hirokazu Tanaka & Masato Kouda - Humoresque of a Little Dog [Super Smash Bros. Brawl]

Due to not getting internet installed in my new home until August, I'm unable to stream LIVE shows until then! Instead, here's a remastered version of The Sound Test's very first broadcast, featuring Dale Fowler.

This show is a real relic, and a lot of fun to hear. There's quite a huge shift in tone compared to how I run The Sound Test LIVE now, but I think fans will really enjoy listening to our first - very casual - attempt at streaming music. Dale joins me for the second link onwards, and some of our interactions are just gold. I hope, even if you've heard this episode before, that you'll get a kick out of this!

My full BONUS interview with Tim Wright, also known as CoLD SToRAGE!
Tim has worked on several racing games in his time, but is possibly best known in the genre for his original WipeOut music. I spoke to him about his audio and composition for various racers in this expansive interview, which approaches two hours in length. Due to the level of detail Tim fit into the conversation, I eventually decided to release it as its own BONUS edition (instead of including it in the full ST2 Racing Special).
In addition to discussing the WipeOut series, our talk also includes insight on: Formula One, Thunder Truck Rally, Supertruck Racing, TT Superbike Legends, Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, Slipstream GX, Table Top Racing, Pacer, No Escape, Krazy Ivan, Microcosm, the well-known "Puggs in Space" Amiga demo and more!
All music by CoLD SToRAGE, except:
Chemical Beats - The Chemical Brothers [Exit Planet Dust]
P.E.T.R.O.L. - Orbital [In-Sides]
Loops of Fury - The Chemical Brothers [Loops of Fury]
Afro Ride - Leftfield (feat. DJUM DJUM) [Leftism]
Know Where to Run - Orbital [The Middle of Nowhere]

Styled as a 2D RPG adventure, Rakuen follows the emotional journey of an unnamed Boy and his mother. Hospitalised by a difficult illness, the boy finds solace in stories of a magical land.
As the narrative unfolds, music becomes integral to the experience. Melodies tie directly into plot threads, and help drive gameplay in some inventive ways. You’d expect nothing less from Laura Shigihara, who joins me for her third Sound Test appearance.
Throughout this podcast, we’ll explore some of Rakuen’s key themes, and what inspired them. There are also a few details about story beats, including the ending, so be warned of spoilers!

To follow on from last week's question about gaming's best playable animal characters, this show delves deep into the wild. With a whole host of choices from listeners, alongside Lee's personal top five, it turns out that there are a lot more iconic digital animals than you might think. There are so many, in fact, that most of the show's regular features are put to one side until next week. Aptly, Lee's dog, Daisy, prances onto the show for a cameo appearance, not best pleased at being left out of the conversation.

Contemporary chiptune enthusiast, Mike Richmond, returns to The Sound Test for another great conversation! This time, we catch up on his recent work with the AY chip, featured in later versions of the ZX Spectrum along with various arcades, pinball machines and other home computers. A very similar chip was used in the Atari ST, which Mike has also been composing for lately. Finally, we cover more of his C64 and Amiga music, making this bonus a very nice expansion on my ST1 Commodore 64 Special!

In Fat Bard's second Sound Test appearance, Zach, Pat and I cover their recent work on two very different titles - Jet Lancer and Levelhead. With the former drenched in guitars alongside an array of retro-influenced synths, and the latter presenting an electronic tapestry of textures and ambience, the two prove their skill for different styles yet again. In this episode, we talk about the production of each, creating sound effects, COVID-19 and more!

Detroit: Become Human is a detailed sci-fi narrative with some of Quantic Dream's most ambitious music to date. In order to best score the story’s three playable characters, a trio of top tier composers joined the project – each focusing on one thread of an interweaving narrative. For Connor – an android police investigator – Nima Fahkrara mixed an array of hardware synths and custom instruments with electric strings to great effect. Philip Sheppard, known for lavish orchestral arrangements, made the very best of Abbey Road and his own inspiration for Kara’s emotional arc. Finally, John Paesano – who gamers may know best for Marvel’s Spider-Man – wrote soaring, almost biblical themes to accompany Markus.
Though unable to schedule a conversation with John Paesano, I’m fortunate enough to be joined by both Nima Fahkrara and Philip Sheppard throughout this episode. Together, we’ll explore their different soundtracks for Detroit: Become Human, the production processes that fuelled them and some thoughts about composing for games in general. Both Nima and Philip have worked extensively in other mediums, and have some interesting perspectives on how they adapt to the world of VGM.

It's wonderful to see Gareth return, and I'm particularly pleased to continue the musical story we began in our original podcast (linked below):

Fatigue reigns heavy on our shoulders this week! Dale and I stumble our way through a very sleepy show, mostly discussing last week's question - what are some of your favourite gaming sequels? An excellent playlist of listener choices definitely helps paper the gaps on this one as we attempt to make sense of our own brains, leading up to our focus for next week - best boss tracks of all time! Many Pepsis come to our aid this week; but can they get us through?
WARNING!: This is probably the most disastrous, sleep deprived ep of The Sound Test ever recorded! Apologies for professionalism going out of the window almost entirely.

Outer Wilds, a unique sci-fi adventure released in 2019, has been a huge hit with critics and players alike. Scored by Andrew Prahlow, a lot of the soundtrack is built on banjos, guitars and other fireside classics (like simple whistling). However, the music also makes clever use of soundscapes, synths and textures, all contributing to a decidedly post-rock sound that perfectly captures the setting.
After Outer Wilds’ incredible haul of Game-of-the-Year wins at the end of 2019, it’s a huge pleasure to welcome Andrew Prahlow onto the show. But, it’s only fair that I warn you of the multiple story spoilers throughout this episode. One of Outer Wilds’ greatest strengths is its mystery, and I’m keen to maintain the power of that narrative for those who haven’t yet completed it, or are interested in starting.

Sea of Thieves is a multiplayer pirate adventure complete with sailing, cutlasses, sea monsters and even interactive shanties. Though given a cartoonish and playful feel, as is often the case with Rare, its creation and continued evolution are taken very seriously. That’s exemplified in Sea of Thieves’ music, which uses an arsenal of intriguing instruments in its authentic sound. In fact, its composer, Robin Beanland, received an Ivor Novello award in 2019 for his inventive OST. But its strength, and clever use of generative elements, are to be expected from Robin – a Rare mainstay who cut his teeth on Killer Instinct before writing immensely popular scores like Conker’s Bad Fur Day.
After leaving a huge Robin Beanland-shaped hole in my first series of VGM podcasts, I was particularly eager to speak to him for ST2. As a result, this is only the first of two appearances, with the second covering his output on the Nintendo 64.

After composing one of the best loved game OSTs of all time with Journey, Austin Wintory was left wondering what could inspire him with the same intensity. Known as a top authority when it comes to composing modern VGM, every project he scores offers a new opportunity to explore and innovate. But, when Stoic – a team of developers led by a trio of ex-Bioware staff – contacted him about their upcoming, crowdfunded game – The Banner Saga – Austin found a veritable wellspring of inspiration.
Following the mythic narrative surrounding a variety of Viking influenced nomads and warriors, the saga is a genuinely epic tale that adapts to player choice as it unfolds. At its heart, the world is one of legend, where the sun itself has frozen in place and dead gods litter the landscape. The story is mostly told through turn-based combat and branching dialogue, while the whole experience is constantly brought to life by strong writing, distinctive art and, most importantly for this podcast, a beautiful soundtrack that shimmers with subtext.

Almost exactly a year on from my first conversation with Clark Aboud, I caught up with him again about his Slay the Spire remix EP - Reslain! It's always a pleasure to chat to Clark, and we also manage to spend some time discussing Kind Words and Factory Town. Both released since we last spoke, so it was great to hear a little on their development alongside lots of his insight on Slay the Spire: Reslain.

To follow up on my Fable podcast episode with Russell Shaw, I caught up with TiceTunes about Kynseed - a new project from a number of ex-Fable developers! Although Russell Shaw wrote Kynseed's main theme, its expansive soundtrack is otherwise given life by Tice. Despite it being his first official video game OST, his work is deep, accomplished and - most importantly - perfect for Kynseed itself.
In this LIVE interview, Tice and I discuss his musical background, how he gave Kynseed its character, production techniques and a lot more!

For Shelley's very first LIVE interview, we spoke to the lovely Fat Bard about their work on the upcoming Guinea Pig Parkour and composing VGM in general!
Along with a debut appearance of my own guinea pig, Douglas, Fat Bard's Zach Fendelman and Patrick Crecelius discuss how they got started in the industry, adapting to different styles and the separate roles they take. It was fantastic to talk to Zach and Pat and, with so many projects on their slate, I'm sure we'll talk again!

When Ori and the Blind Forest first released in 2015, it made waves for its beautifully realised landscapes and emotional narrative. Inspired by a number of classic platformers, gameplay concentrates on running, jumping, climbing and shooting through a plethora of striking environments. It was developed by Moon Studios, who represent a collective of talented and experienced creatives from around the globe, all coming together for a single, breathtaking, work of art.
Music plays a gigantic role in Ori and the Blind Forest, which always sounds as gorgeous as it looks. Composed by Gareth Coker, the soundtrack was quickly noted for its evocative melodies and rich sound, which is thankfully set to continue into the upcoming sequel – Ori and the Will of the Wisps. Previously, Gareth and I discussed the five albums of material he wrote for Minecraft, which can be found here.

Team Cherry’s Hollow Knight, funded by a Kickstarter in 2017, is a prime example of the ongoing strength of indie games. Players quickly became enamoured with its masterful Metroidvania gameplay, brought to life at every turn by a strikingly unique visual style. It’s a title you can truly lose yourself in, through its dark, atmospheric environments and dense sound design.
Besides some individual character voices, the entirety of Hollow Knight’s audio is the work of Christopher Larkin. His soundtrack for the game is a perfect reflection of the dank surroundings you explore, and it becomes all the more immersive as it subtly changes depending on your movements. This episode features Christopher in his first Sound Test appearance, discussing Hollow Knight’s audio at length. His next episode, set for release in 2020, will cover Outfolded and Expand, two smaller games with their own fascinating tales to tell.

This BONUS episode appeared basically out of nowhere, as a short 15-min interview about the latest MediEvil game turned into a 50-min exploration of the entire franchise!
Paul Arnold and Andrew Barnabas (probably best known as "Bob & Barn") are true musical masterminds, who have worked on a number of interesting titles in their career. Notably, they've composed for every single iteration of MediEvil over the years, from its first games on the PS1 all the way to today.
MediEvil is one of those games that's earned its place in popular culture through addictive and rewarding gameplay, lovingly sprinkled with consistently endearing characters and environments. Bob & Barn scored it all with memorable orchestral elements, which grew from using simple MIDI samples to full live ensembles as the series marched on. In this BONUS, you'll hear intricate details of how they approached MediEvil, along with some extra thoughts about composing for TV and another of their games, Primal!

Popcap are probably best known for a string of browser and mobile games that helped define their respective genres. Among their most successful series is Plants vs. Zombies, which has spawned several spin-offs and sequels since it first released in 2009.
It was also one of the games that established Laura Shigihara as a formidable musical talent. She provided such accomplished work to the game that Peter McConnell, who took over composing duties from PVZ2, has kept it firmly in mind for every sequel since. Because of that, the series has carved out its own distinctive feel, and one that expertly matches the cartoonish fun on screen.
In this episode, following on from her first short appearance in this series’ Minecraft episode, Laura Shigihara returns to the show for her first of two lengthier conversations. Additionally, Peter McConnell makes his Sound Test debut ahead of an expansive LucasArts podcast in 2020. In this Plants vs. Zombies special, the three of us explore what makes the franchise’s music stick out, and fit so well with the madcap world around it.

For ST2's third episode, I specifically wanted to explore something more up-to-date. No Man's Sky's soundtrack is among the best received VGM OSTs of the past few years, and that's even more impressive considering the game's initial negative reception. Though the title itself has been updated numerous times, significantly warming people's perceptions in the process, 65daysofstatic's great music remains intact.
In this podcast, I'm joined by one of the band's principle members - Paul Wolinski - for a long talk about No Man's Sky's infinite music machine. We discuss how an electronic and post-rock band has to adapt to composing video game music, and some of the challenges that come with the process. I also spoke to Paul Weir, who was heavily involved in the design and implementation of the systems that govern the soundtrack. He also helmed the game's sound effects and creature vocals, which we talk about in a dedicated section.
Between the two Pauls, this is a truly detailed episode that I hope does justice to No Man's Sky and its fascinating legacy. Once a game I disregarded myself, I now absolutely love its subjective space exploration and gorgeous landscapes. If you haven't yet given it another try, this episode may just inspire you to!

This BONUS episode of ST2 is actually the second part of a Lionhead Studios double bill, with the first focusing on Fable (available here).
After Peter Molyneux left Bullfrog Productions in 1997, he soon started his new venture - Lionhead Studios. Though they were unfortunately ill-fated with money across their run, they were nonetheless responsible for a number of interesting and imaginative games. Their first, Black & White, was a innovative take on the God genre, featuring music from Bullfrog's own Russell Shaw.
The soundtrack itself is as forward-thinking as it is mercilessly ambient. Though mostly resting on a variety of sparse backing tracks, it also makes clever use of many smaller elements, and aspects that change depending on your playstyle. Throughout this BONUS episode, Russell outlines some of the thought processes behind Black & White, which occupies an interesting space in both his career and VGM in general.

I always wanted the second episode of ST2 to cover a classic, and I think I got that in spades when I spoke to Russell Shaw about the Fable series. Its first release is a real RPG benchmark, and though the games slowly slipped into a less enthusiastic reception, Russell Shaw's music was always highly regarded as some of the best in the industry.
After an interesting collaboration with Danny Elfman, Russell really made Fable his own. Despite being new to orchestration, he stepped up to the lofty task more than admirably, making huge improvements in his approach with every successive game. Even considering his growth as an orchestral composer, the first Fable's music undoubtably holds up to this day, providing VGM with some of its most accomplished and satisfying themes.
Russell and I talk about every release in the series, from Fable itself to the unreleased Fable: Legends, which had a whole soundtrack composed before its cancellation. This releases alongside a much shorter Black & White episode, and the two together serve as an extended special on Lionhead Studios. That Black & White edition premieres straight after this one, available here:

To kick off this first pre-Christmas mini-run of ST2, Minecraft seemed perfect. As I type this, it's the best-selling video game of all time, and it's a safe bet that practically every gamer has dipped into its blocky world at some point. Many of us, myself included, have done far more than simply dip in, using its subjective gameplay and nearly infinite possibilities to construct an addictive other life.
Along with its influential mechanics, Minecraft is known for its unique approach to music and sound. Its original soundtrack, by C418, is an intensely minimal slow burn through gorgeous piano melodies and soft strings. Once Microsoft acquired the brand, publishing a string of commercial ports and updates, Gareth Coker (known for Ori and the Blind Forest) came on board to score a variety of mash-up packs and minigames. His five albums for Minecraft are just as impressive and interesting as C418's initial work, and I'm honoured to welcome both talents onto this debut episode of ST2. As if that weren't enough, the incredible Laura Shigihara makes a short cameo appearance, discussing her previous collaboration with C418. Laura will later appear in two further episodes of ST2, covering Plants vs. Zombies and Rakuen, and it was great to include her in this huge celebration of Minecraft's audio.
We discuss Minecraft's music in painstaking depth, and I hope you enjoy hearing their insights!

Russell Shaw is set to appear three times throughout season two, covering his time at Bullfrog Productions, Lionhead's Black & White and the entire Fable series.
An incredible talent with nearly 30 years of experience in the industry, Russell provided one of my most insightful interviews yet. This trailer provides just one small peek into our long conversation, concentrating on his very first significant role in VGM - 1993's Syndicate.

In this episode, Walter Day (Twin Galaxies founder) joins us for a nice lengthy conversation that spans from favourite sports teams to in-depth thoughts on the modern eSports scene. In addition, Walter gives us some of the touching background behind his own songwriting, and even performs a couple of live renditions with his acoustic guitar! Along with our regular 2-hours of classic VGM, this episode simply isn't to be missed.

Currently in production, the second season of The Sound Test continues on where the first left off. Though the whole project is in limbo, it's sure to feature a whole new set of insightful interview guests (along with some more familiar ones!).
My first interview for the series was with Daniel Rosenfeld, better known as C418. Daniel's incredible and distinctive work on Minecraft is a huge part of its success, and his influence can still be heard in games released today. This trailer features Daniel's thoughts on Minecraft's masterful ambience!

Slay the Spire, released just weeks before the recording of this interview, is the debut game from developers MegaCrit. Though available in early access since 2017, its full version presents a dynamic deck-building experience with a gorgeous soundtrack to boot. Composed by Clark Aboud, Slay the Spire’s OST is an orchestral adventure of its own, developing on the strengths of his previous work for Make Sail and Timeframe.
In anticipation of my upcoming second series of The Sound Test, I spoke to Clark about Slay the Spire and the processes behind its music. This bonus episode presents that conversation in full, and I hope you enjoy his insights!

In 2017, Davide Soliani brought two of gaming's most successful franchises together into a truly madcap marriage. Made up of Mario, perhaps the most famous face in the industry, and Ubisoft's Raving Rabbids, who have dominated the party genre for a decade, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is a turn-based love letter to each. As an important release for the Nintendo Switch, it demanded strength in every department. Therefore, the legendary Grant Kirkhope was a natural choice to take on its original soundtrack. Armed with a full orchestra and the determination to live up to such composers as Koji Kondo, Grant wrote a gorgeous, classical score. Together, we take a look at its production process, and some of the philosophies behind it.

When Super Meat Boy hit its fifth anniversary, and saw new ports for fresh consoles, the decision was made to give it a musical respray. After Danny Baranowsky, who wrote the game's original OST, and Team Meat had parted ways, RIDICULON became the obvious choice for the job. Along with David "Scattle" Scatliffe and Laura Shigihara, the four composed music that stood on its own and reinterpreted the tone of gameplay. Here, Jon Evans and Matthias Bossi (who together form RIDICULON) join me to discuss Super Meat Boy's 5th Anniversary soundtrack.
This episode follows up last week's, which features Danny Baranowsky's perspective on his original SMB score.

Super Meat Boy caused a platforming storm when it was first released in 2010. Its steep learning curve and devilish level design have made it something of a pilgrimage for fans of the genre. At release, it was Edmund McMillen's biggest game to date — based off a Flash original hosted on Newgrounds. Among its most enduring features was Danny Baranowsky's colourful soundtrack, which tumbles deeper into dark territory to match the gameplay. For the final time, Danny joins me on The Sound Test for a look at his multi-faceted OST and how it came to be.
This episode has a follow-up in next week's look at Super Meat Boy: 5th Anniversary Edition (which invites RIDICULON onto the show).

Before today's flood of triple-A console games, way back in the 80s, the Commodore 64 ruled the roost. The most popular home computer in the western world, the C64 became synonymous with homespun programming and the birth of video games as we know them. Then, original soundtracks for video games were forced to use a mere three channels, and were unable to record any real instrumentation. Despite these limitations, musicians like Rob Hubbard and Ben Daglish coded expansive themes that remain beloved today. This episode features both, for a lengthy conversation about the creation of VGM on the C64's lauded SID chip. I hope it does Ben's legacy justice — he sadly passed away during production, and this episode is dedicated to his memory.

Left 4 Dead, a zombie infested first-person shooter, went into new territory for Valve in 2008. Hinging on a dynamic AI Director, the game reacts to your skill and movements by procedurally generating enemies, events and several other elements. Importantly, music is a huge part of that unpredictability. Mike Morasky eschewed a traditional score in order to play to the game's strengths, constructing a complex system that organically constructs personalised soundtracks for each session. I spoke to Mike for this L4D 1 & 2 special, which also features the Witch herself (Ellen McLain) and Jonathan Coulton - a popular songwriter who contributed to L4D2.

As the N64's third bestselling title, GoldenEye 007 needs no introduction. It's probably the most influential first-person shooter of all time, and still shows up in lists covering the best of its genre. The game's music sails through famous Bond themes and motifs with a cool, electronic edge suited to every step of spy work. A collaborative effort between Grant Kirkhope, Graeme Norgate and Robin Beanland, GoldenEye 007's soundtrack was one of the first to show the new capabilities of the N64. Unfortunately, I was unable to schedule interviews with Graeme or Robin, but Grant's back on The Sound Test to offer more of his insight!

This week, RIDICULON return to the show to take us all the way back to the 19th century. The End is Nigh, a spiritual sequel to Super Meat Boy, features an OST of iconic classical masterworks, re-arranged and re-imagined by Jon Evans and Matthias Bossi. The results are an aural delight, perfectly marrying the melodic power of revered composers with the patented RIDICULON sound.

Before Hollywood film adaptations, and more reboots than you can shake a Desert Eagle at, Tomb Raider began life as a trilogy of revolutionary 3D platformers. Its slow, contemplative atmosphere was enhanced at every step by beautiful music from Nathan McCree. Both Danny Baranowsky and Jules Conroy return to the show, discussing their expansive work for Crypt of the NecroDancer! An innovative dungeon crawler with rhythm game mechanics, NecroDancer is unusual for its multiple remixed soundtracks by various artists. With only two games, the Portal series has still managed a gigantic impact on players. Its inventive puzzles are addictive, just like the acerbic jibes of the title's main antagonist, GLaDOS. Behind it all, synth-laden drones and melodic narratives help immerse you into the haunting madhouse of Aperture Science. Its soundtrack was composed primarily by Mike Morasky, who joins me for an exhaustive journey through Portal's audio. I also spoke to Jonathan Coulton, who wrote famed end-credits tracks like "Still Alive" and Ellen McLain, the voice of GLaDOS herself. Together, we leave no stone unturned.

Donkey Kong Country is home to some of VGM's most iconic and enduring tracks. From its first game to its very latest, Tropical Freeze, music has been as important to the series as the tight platforming it scores.
