The Spawdcast is a podcast created for pet owners and pet industry professionals. Our mission is to open pet-owner’s eyes to the questions they may not even know to ask, to shine light on the many myths that have been part of pet care for decades and to offer whole solutions for their pets. As well as introduce more options of care for those thinking of working in the pet care industry or those that have an existing career.
Hosts Carrie Hyde (owner of The Spaw in Tustin, Ca) is a certified pet nutritionists and in this podcast she brings on experts to help educate listeners on ALL the options available to their pet.
This is a no bull, tell-the-truth kind of podcast, with the occasional pet pun.
Our goal is that pet-owners & pet professionals can walk away with a new understanding about how to care for pets in a “whole and natural” way, with just a touch of humor.
Carrie Hyde wants to be your pet’s life coach!

What happens when your pet’s immune system is dysregulated and starts attacking the body rather than the problem? Immune mediated disease is super common in pets and it happens when an immune system becomes overactive and is triggered by external allergens or internal systems. What you think could be a simple allergy actually goes much deeper. Dr. Michael Dym, experienced Holistic and Homeopathic veterinarian, is back with us today to explain to us what immune mediated disease is and how to manage it. He lets us know what causes these issues and what you can do to prevent this becoming a problem for your pet.

It may not be intentional but there are times when vets are setting up our pets for failure. Veterinarian induced diseases may be uncomfortable to think about but they are real. What are the medicines that cause diseases? What are the common practices that are actually damaging to our pet’s health? Homeopathic veterinarian, Dr. Robin Cannizzaro is on the podcast today to discuss the warning signs of vet induced diseases. She urges us to be aware of what is going on behind the scenes and to know that there are other options.

While most veterinarians are dedicated to the humane, lawful, and caring treatment of animals, there are those out there who place profits above their patients. Veterinary malpractice is seldom talked about and seldom punished because animals are considered property under the law. Negligent vets likely face nothing more than a fine and a slap on the wrist for the death of a beloved pet.
Today, Carrie has invited Scott Fine to speak on how he took a stand and created Joey’s Legacy to advocate for victims of veterinary malpractice. He decided it’s time to change our laws to recognize the true value of our pets and finally hold vets accountable.

Let’s talk wolves! Today we have Tom Gable, wolf expert and researcher, on the show to share his insights and findings from The Voyageurs Wolf Project. His work is all about discovering the secret lives of wolves, studying their behaviors, and spreading awareness of these fantastic animals. Tom demystifies wolf diets, what it actually means to be a “carnivore”, and what their hunting and scavenging behaviors mean for their digestive systems. And by learning more about wolves, we can understand so much more about our own domesticated dogs. It’s time to put aside the kibbles touting wolves to sell their products and find out what wolves actually eat.

The goal is longer, healthier and better lives for our dogs. The key is nutrition. Thomas Sandberg, accomplished naturopath, is 20 years into a lifelong study of raw diets and what they actually do for dogs. He has worked with hundreds of dogs all over the world and seen the success firsthand. His conclusion is that all dogs from little puppies to senior dogs benefit from a raw diet. Whether they’ve eaten raw their whole lives or subsited on kibble for years, after making the switch, they all improve. Cancer, allergies, seizures, and so many more ailments are prevented, treated, and often cured with proper nutrition. To get the whole story on Thomas Sandberg’s study and findings, listen now!

There was nothing Kelly would not do to keep her service dog, Duncan, healthy. So when her vet prescribed Hill’s Science Diet, she did not think twice. She trusted her vet. And she trusted that pet food companies would do their basic level function of keeping dogs safe. She was wrong. Duncan died. And 2 weeks later, the Science Diet was recalled. Kelly took her grief and turned it into a movement. She shares her story to encourage others like her to educate themselves on nutrition and to demand transparency and accountability of the pet food industry that is killing our pets.

Nate Estes is the pet parent of his little maltese Zoey who received a death-sentence of a diagnosis: Mitral Valve Disease. Like 7 million other pet-parents of dogs diagnosed with this heart disease in the United States, Nate and his wife were devastated that their young five-year-old maltese was projected to have only one more painful year to live and the solutions available to help in the U.S were non-existent. Nate went on to create an organization to help others with this very diagnosis called Mighty Hearts and we believe his story will warm yours.

There is a lot of confusion when it comes to vaccines: when to get them, what to get and what to know about them? Dr. Dodds breaks down the common ubiquitous diseases that are necessary to vaccinate for and clears up some of the confusion we face when trying to make good decisions for our pets. Another point of confusion is what are titers and does your pet need one? A titer test is a blood test that measures the level of immune system proteins called antibodies. We learn how this is connected to vaccines and why it’s important as a choice or alternative for your pet.

Carol Smeja sits down with our host Brittney Whiteford at the Raw Dog Summit in Chicago and divulges on the instinctual way dogs should be eating their food…just like their relatives and ancestors the wolves do in the wild.
Carol Smeja's career has focused in the area of psychology and sociology which culminated in her earning a PhD and teaching. After leaving academia, she applied these roots in understanding the psychological and social dynamics of eating while working in and improving health & diet with government agencies including the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) and the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention). More recently, she has applied her extensive research and diagnostic training in understanding the eating behaviors of our dogs & cats by studying the natural and instinctive behaviors of their ancestral roots. And from observing her own dog Pipa, she and her husband developed a solution - The Mine Pet Platter.

Unfortunately the occurrence of abuse in facilities like grooming shops, veterinary hospitals and boarding facilities are not uncommon. That's the bad news. The good news is that a lot of these problems are avoidable or preventable. And if it isn't...then it is definitely reportable. Abuse is against the law. We talk with a few seasoned women, Brissa Mejia, Melissa Zizzo and Ceiann Capito, who share their experience, their unfortunate accounts of abuse they witnessed, and solutions for you as a pet owner.

We are busting myths in this episode around feeding your pet a raw diet, or better referred to as a Species Appropriate Diet or as we like to call it: a "SAD" diet. We explore the topic with questions from our guest Sonia Howett, a pet owner thinking about making the switch to help her dogs who suffer from a few ailments and our expert Joey Weichmann who flies all over the country educating people about converting to a SAD diet. You'll love his story of why he made the switch and how it was basically Mr. Finnley, his travel buddy dachshund, who lead him to his job representing Vital Essentials, a species appropriate dog food brand.

With the help of Dr. Margo Roman we called on our inner lion for courage to speak on some controversial issues that are often swept under the carpet. We learn that it all starts with a healthy microbiome but how we care for our pets microbiome is imperative in keeping our pets at their best. We discuss a myriad of alternative ways to address flea treatment, skin issues, dental issues, prevent heart worm, and many other health issues. Basically how to set your pet up for success not failure in more conscientious ways than are commercially discussed.

The Organic Paw is a podcast created for pet owners and pet industry professionals.
Our mission is to open pet-owner’s eyes to the questions they may not even know to ask, to shine light on the many myths that have been part of pet care for decades and to offer whole solutions for their pets.
As well as introduce more options of care for those thinking of working in the pet care industry or those who already have a career.
Hosts Carrie Hyde (owner of The Spaw in Tustin, Ca) & Brittney Whiteford (owner of The Cat Jungle in Tustin, CA) are both certified pet nutritionists and in this podcast they bring on experts to help educate listeners on ALL the options available to their pet.
This is a no bull, tell-the-truth kind of podcast, with the occasional pet pun. Our goal is that pet-owners & pet professionals can walk away with a new understanding about how to care for pets in a “whole and natural” way, with just a touch of humor.
Carrie Hyde and Brittney Whiteford want to be your pet’s life coach!
