Amer shared that he was seeking a partner with whom he could establish an emotional connection, rather than just a physical attraction. John suggested that this strategy would be more effective in securing a long-term relationship, especially with women who are looking for commitment. The discussion also touched upon the role of business volatility in romantic relationships, with the participants debating how a partner might perceive a potential partner's business situation. The conversation concluded with John advising Amer on the importance of the courtship phase and the strategy of demonstrating resource sharing during this phase to secure a long-term relationship.

Austin , Amer, and John discussed the challenges of fear and decision-making. Amer's tendency to focus on potential downsides and impediments was explored, as was the idea of fear as it relates to decision-making. The conversation also delved into relationships, with discussions on the potential for commitment to increase options in life, as well as the importance of emotional maturity in potential partners. The group also touched upon age differences in dating and the challenges of helping immature partners mature.

Exploring Behavioural Evolution and Motivation

John, Austin, and Amer engaged in a thought-provoking discussion about the evolution of behaviours, their role in promoting success and survival, and their connection to personal motivation and purpose in life. They explored the four main Darwinian needs – belonging, reciprocation, self-promotion, and uniqueness – and their influence on consumer behavior and decision-making. The team acknowledged the complexity of this question and the value of continued inquiry, with Austin suggesting a podcast featuring Jordan Peterson for further insight. The conversation remained open-ended, but with a shared commitment to further explore this multifaceted topic.

Self-Improvement, Resilience, and Leadership

John shared a personal story about the importance of self-improvement and the regret he felt over not having guided his friends better in their development. The group agreed on the significance of distinguishing between self-improvement and competing with others. They also discussed the value of resilience and overcoming adversity, with John sharing his belief that difficult experiences had made him stronger. The conversation concluded with John's newfound responsibility to be a strong leader for his children and the challenges of maintaining leadership roles during good times.

John shared his hiring approach, emphasizing the importance of hiring candidates as soon as they become hireable, without strict numerical policies for interviews. John and Austin discussed the changes in the business landscape since the Covid-19 pandemic started and its impact on their respective painting and roofing businesses. They identified trends where customers were increasingly more price-sensitive, and the high-end options were becoming less popular, posing challenges for their sales teams. Despite their company's policy against price negotiation, their competitors were dropping their prices significantly, leading to a gap in the market that their company did not intend to fill. They also discussed the challenges of offering financing options due to high-interest rates and the impact of a rival company's price cuts on their business. The conversation revealed the complex dynamics of the competitive landscape and the need for their company to adapt to changing customer behavior.

Austin faced a challenge related to his podcast and was required to answer two out of three questions, but could only manage to answer one due to potential hacking. John and Amer participated in the discussion, which included issues regarding system access and the consequences of copyright violations. A humorous discussion about the "Bridge of Death" scene from Monty Python's "Quest for the Holy Grail" ensued, with Rydel and John taking turns answering the questions posed by the bridgekeeper. The conversation also involved a light-hearted discussion between Amer and Austin, reminiscent of a Monty Python sketch, where they posed various questions to each other. John noted that this was similar to a recent experience with Austin.

In this week’s episode, Austin, Amer, and John chat about Austin and Amer’s recent boys trip in Vegas.

Something we can always appreciate in our best friends is that they call us out on our bullshit. In this week’s conversation, Amer points out there there were several opportunities for Austin to be more mindful on the trip. I think we can all take away from this conversation that we often have opportunities to improve our communication and mindfulness around others because we are too often using our monkey brain to make easy decisions.

In this episode, you’ll also discover:

• Whether John is missing out by not having Snapchat (0:14) • Are Strippers Actually Sales Queens?: The unexpected correlation between strippers and sales prowess, as Austin and Amer delve into their Vegas adventure (0:20) • The age-old adage of ‘you gotta spend money to keep making money’ and its relevance in their experiences (0:40) • The intriguing intersection between intuition and the sales system and how it shapes their decision-making processes (1:00) • A thought-provoking question: When you solve a problem, who are you potentially robbing? (1:35) • Amer’s unique coaching approach towards nurturing intuition and its impact on personal growth (1:50)

"Birthdays are participation medals of life." - John Morgan

It's always a treat when on your birthday, John Morgan III tells you he wishes you well and respects your work in your business, and that he also doesn't give a sh*t it's your birthday.

In this week's episode, Amer shares his experience of visiting Omaha to see Warren Buffet along with his experience of witnessing some fantastical stereotypes of a Southern American (guns and beer guts)

Later in the episode, Austin, Amer, and John discuss their relationships with meditation - Austin who has entropied some time away from the practice, John who practices in waves, and Amer who practices meditating on weekdays. John mentions that using Sam Harris' app, "Waking Up", he received a a notification message from Sam Harris that said "I envy your meditation streak", which John found charming because he did actually feel like his consistency had improved from being aware of this streak. However, Sam Harris' message continued to explain that if you're only present to satisfy your streak, we've really missed the mark on what the intentions of mediating should be.

There are no participation medals for meditating. There's no credit if you tell others. There's not even a benefit for you if you haven't participated correctly in the practice.

Ultimately, you are either able to live your life completely, or you are not.

Take this episode as a reminder to audit your intentions in meditation.

Sit back, relax, and enjoy this week's episode of The Weekly Call.

In this weeks podcast, we take a deep dive into the lens Amer had casted on his world - that he needed to prove his success to be deserving of love, from family, from friends, and potentially a partner someday. He shares an experience he had with his housemate and close friend James, who sat him down after a retreat to let him know that there are certain actions/inactions he takes as a that makes James feel like he’s not being the greatest friend. In this episode, Amer acknowledges that these actions were selfish, with only his best interest in mind and the guys dive deeper into how this mindset plays into different aspects of Amer‘s life including how he chooses to discuss business as well as choices in his romantic life. This blindspot was heavily unpacked in this episode so if you share a similar world view of Amer or are curious as to how one can overcome it, sit back, relax, and enjoy this episode of The Weekly Call. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theweeklycall/message

Empathy (noun): the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.

A baby isn’t in a position to understand wrong from right… which is why everyone just likes babies right? What’s there to not like about a baby? They’re very simple creatures - they live to eat, sleep, and take mysterious dumps :)

In this podcast, Austin, Amer and John take a deep dive into what empathy looks like in their lives.

John gives an example of how he’s had a recent experience getting in touch with his sister, who he doesn’t share much of a relationship with in her adulthood, where he provided her with his honest truth on his opinion on her pending divorce.

It seems that empathy has a logic focus in the masculine brain and empathy has an emotion/relationship focus in the feminine brain.

The Patreon Fall Retreat Episode!!!

Austin, Amer, and John spend the weekend with the Weekly Ballers at a Whistler Lodge discussing last week’s topic of “is love a cloak?”, and compare that to a circumstance Amer is experiencing in TradeArc where his commitments to his clients get confusing.

Although Amer’s primary commitments are to his employees and shareholders, what’s the line of what you’ll do for your clients? Who else is going to challenge them? Who else is going to help them improve their retirement situation for themselves and their spouse, or give them time back with their kids? And who’s going to hit the monthly company goals? Who’s going to generate the input needed for TradeArc? How are you going to have the biggest impact?

We know that Amer has a client that would 100% be a fantastic candidate for his program if he was a bachelor but it becomes complicated when there’s the factor of him being a married man.

At some point the Patreons get a little stressed that our dads Austin and John have started fighting but it was pretty great to see it live regardless. No doubt after the recording it’s always all love so don’t be too worried 😂

And fyi contrary to John’s immediate attack on Merlyn, he doesn’t blink when he looks at her. Like a freak

  • your wives will agree to being stay at home wives (if they do) likely because they have an agreement with you because that’s what’s best for your relationship and what you both want
  • Let’s say the actual cost of paying a stay at home mom is like somewhere between $50k-$75k idk, but you’d pay Tricia for example a lot more money because the compatibility she has with you is so much more valuable than that
  • Amer you’re asking if Tricia’s recommitted to John’s asks but if he’s saying her family’s given her a completely different lifestyle that isn’t much of a fair commitment to ask her to make she doesn’t know what this future looks like and I’m sure she’d hope the answer is yes she can do it and become someone that can thrive
  • It’s the most optimal for Amer to focus his time on hiring a coach to take on these types of obstacles with clients
  • Do you have a method to teach them?
  • If not this one very rigorous example to move through might be in your benefit so you can train someone to manage it

If you are in a romantic relationship, do you hold your significant other to a higher or lower standard than how you would hold... say an employee?

In this week's episode, Austin, Amer, and John have a pretty tough conversation that lots of us can relate to on the expectations and acceptance of your romantic partner. If your partner is continuously not fulfilling on their commitments to you, do you think it's possible that expectations should be renegotiated? Is it possible that your partner committed to certain things because they're afraid of disappointing you? Do you think there are hierarchies in romantic relationship? Should there be?...

Opportunities that Amer mentioned:

  • There's an opportunity to be more flexible in defining a "man's role" and "woman's role"
  • There's an oppportunity around excuse making and load management. Maybe you're creating a space where it's difficult for your significant other to have a conversation on their load managment.
  • For someone who is highly logical and analytical, there may be a lot of natural resistance against having an emotional understanding of a woman's needs. There is an opportunity to practice that emotional understanding to satisfy your significant other's emotional needs so that she's also satisfied in the relationship enough to reciprocate your logical needs.
  • When speaking about shooting averages we may not have resonable metrics to measuring our partner's success rate. There's an opportunity to see this relationship as less transactional.

While discussing the testimonials of TradeArc (0:50) Amer mentions the few strategies he's implemented to audit the learning of his clients. John then breaks down why recurring income is not necessarily better than one off sales through his personal experiences of buying Bubly cans. In the current model, there's no switching cost and it's not purchased as a subscription... so there's clearly something sticky about this Pepsi product.

Not all recurring income is actually recurring and some one-time sales may actually become recurring income.

Similar to Amer's business, James and himself have had multiple conversations on how in their industry of consulting, can they lower the "cost per acquisition" and increase the "value over lifetime".

The guys revisit last week's conversation on a much more... peaceful note than the somewhat spicy end to the last episode. We agree that what Amer wants is to make sure Austin's challenged without a glass ceiling on the upsides... after all THIS IS THE GET PAID PODCAST for goodness sake!!!

Austin also acknowledges that she has a way better ability today to hear opinions like what Amer and John shared last week and stand beside it. In years prior, it could've been expected that he would completely vacate that entire conversation from his head because of how it made him feel I'm sure a lot of us can relate to vacating conversations that make us uncomfortable… It's important to remind ourselves that growth is usually uncomfortable.

Later on in the podcast Austin shares his memories on his recently passed grandfather, Terry <3. I think we'd all be lucky to be surrounded by our loved ones in our passing moments. That being said... have you guys ever asked yourselves whether you'd prefer to die in your own home or in the hospital? The guys take an interesting perspective on this at around 1h in LOL

Here are some extra rough time stamped notes from our incredible BTS Gabe:

  • 1:37: Correlation between competence of a man and the quality of the food at his wedding (lol)
  • 1:42-2:00: Discussion on Edibles
  • 2:18: John not happy running his business

How often do you guys make time in your schedule just to think?

This week, John gets himself lost in the wilderness so Austin and Amer take on the weekend episode discussing the importance of checking in with yourself if your actions are truly in line with where you're trying to go.

Amer draws the comparison between what it means to provide a structured plan to execute what you want to accomplish versus the internal audit of just thinking about why it is you want to accomplish something. Is the accomplishment in fact aligned with the person you want to be? Are you satisfied with the sacrifices you're required to make? Is the means to the end also in integrity with your identity?

Coming up with the right questions to ask yourself may be the challenge in this case.

Let us know your thoughts!

I had always struggled with patience because I always saw patience as a lack of ambition.

And I could never have patience and drive coexist. I just remember having this lightbulb moment where I wrote down everything I was thinking and concluded that - “Life is much more akin to a walk in a park… it’s not a marathon.”

We compare this idea to “Life is a marathon, not a sprint” but that’s not really it either… there’s nothing to accomplish. One day, inevitably, we’ll all die.

And that’s not sad either.

So smell the f*cking roses because we’ve been given here a walk in the park. It’s literally about the journey.

James gives one fantastic example of what this looks like in his life - if any task to grow his business required him to compromise his fitness, eat healthy food, spend time with his loved ones, he just wouldn’t do it. He’d find a way to just scale his business much slower because that’s simply just not what life is about for him.

I played the game so differently for so many years because I had to.

I had very good mentor habits – which have now led me to have very good decision making that aren't necessarily how I can make the most money.

Looking at the re-organization of my sales structure, I looked at how much the sales department was making, and I wasn’t sure it was truly worth it for them to be taking such a large percentage of the profits.

When I hired this one guy that had all this experience, I was truly weary about things that seemed guaranteed about this person.

I also had other influences asking me “at your level, do you really need to be mentoring another person?”

These conversations made me appreciate some things that I wasn’t looking at before for example - work ethic.

If I can’t duplicate myself - I thought I’d be able to teach one of my skills to someone who would take it as an entire role. And I expected them to be better than me because of it and and that’s a bias, that’s just not true.

You need to be able to sit down with an individual and say:

  1. these are my expectations
  2. this is how you can meet them
  3. and this is what it looks like when you’re winning

and then put that on an employment agreement.

'I got a text this week from a foundation called "The Gift of Life Marrow Registry":

“Hi Austin, this is Jacqueline from the gift of life registry. You swabbed your cheek in 2018 and have been identified as a potential match to a patient.”

I filled out this health questionnaire and then they called me immediately and they go "Hey, this is Austin? This is Zach from The Gift of Life Marrow Registry, you are a perfect match for a patient with leukaemia in the US. Okay so, what this is all about is you either donate stem cells or bone marrow depending on what the needs of the patient of which is currently unclear – there’s a huge process to understand that.'

Everyday I would wake up...

I would be anxious while waiting for the bus...

When I got to work, I would be anxious thinking to myself "fuck, what am I doing with my life?"...

Then after work, my friends and I would get in one truck, go to a park, get insanely high, and play grounders on a playground.

My life didn't feel easier back then having less responsibilities than I do now. That to me, was a way harder life than what I'm living now. At the time, the drive that I had to have to just escape that part of my life, is a lot more than the drive I have now to achieve the next level of my business.

Listeners, what are the parts of your past that you're fighting?

“I know for a fact that at any given moment I have a year’s worth of expenses fully covered no matter what the fuck happens” - John Morgan III

Other than the government mandating the need for driving insurance which by the way John does not agree with, make no mistake – John is completely unwilling to incurred the costs of possible damages which may occur while driving without insurance.

Here is then a challenge – can the same peace of mind not be accomplished through stoicism and mindset.

Is it fair to say that your peace of mind is dependent on the amount of money you have in your bank account? Cash is a method of weathering storms in today’s society. Listeners, at what point do you feel like you’re sacrificing peace for preparedness?

Ladies and gentle lads! This week we get to witness one of the glorious perks of a position on The Weekly Call Podcast team... to be roasted to char whenever you slip... thank GOD it wasn't a GAME... it was JuSt PrAcTicE...... when these burn wound recover, I'll be grateful...

On another note, John's been having some fun doing adventurous personal investigation work to figure out what investors are most optimal for his business. He points out that there's certain tasks where the anticipation of the task sucks A LOT MORE than just doing the task!

  • For John, it's doing a sales call… because the first one's pretty good, then we might be able to do some more that could be a lot better! And if the first one kind of sucked… Then we got to get one and that's a good one before we close off the task!
  • For Amer, it was getting his butt to the gym!

Amer also shares an interesting story about how in spite of practising basketball very frequently in his childhood and being ambitious to make the NBA, the distribution of time spent on developing certain skills wasn't exactly optimized in hindsight. This is probably a scenario that lots of us run into with just not knowing enough about how to improve certain skills!

Listeners, let us know where you've audited your strategies and discovered something drastically different!

In this weeks episode, Austin, Amer, and John, discuss their knowledge of mortgages including how mortgages are designed, what they entail, and how they react differently in different economic states. And as you can tell by the title… The first four letters are capitalized to give a bilingual play on words… Because MORT means DEAD

In this weeks podcast, Merlyn (me) shares an ongoing challenge that she’s been having that Austin identifies with - a personality combination of impatience and neuroticism.

Meaning that you’re very impatient to drive results in your life, so you’re never willing to stop working, and you want to control all variables at all times for optimal results. Austin shares that he has an immense amount of discomfort leaving his business in the hands of anyone else for an extended period of time because neuroticism also plays into seeing the worst case scenario when there’s no control.

Listeners, I would absolutely love to know which one of you feel that you share these traits and how you feel this lethal combo plays out in different areas of your life.

EP 156 | Audaciously Auditing Austin

In this week’s episode, Austin shares how despite him being a part of The Weekly Call, he continues to practice behaviours that are counter to his goals.

He admits that he hasn’t read a book in five months, he hasn’t meditated in five months, he hasn’t had an impromptu date night with Miranda in a long time all in while his business has sustained success and continues to hit its milestones.

John points out that balancing various areas of your life - balancing health, wealth, love, and happiness, are critical to seeing quality of life improve in general.

Amer provides a great analogy of cumulating water to nurture your plants then delaying watering your plants because you’re intending to accumulate even more water for it.

There is so much to learn from this conversation for everyone who chooses to prioritize career advances over other aspects of life, and in turn is unsatisfied with their life.

Later on in the episode, the guys also have an interesting conversation about how they would be considering their lifestyle in the midst of a recession.

In this week's episode, the guys share some interesting stories about how they have evolved in learning through their businesses over the years.

When Austin is in a scenario where he is marketing and he removes himself from his attachments of doing it for six years, he is able to look past his ego and “considerations” about what kind of a marketer he is. Although you may have many transferrable skills from your past experiences, it's important to acknowledge that you are in a fresh craft and learning scenario.

On a similar note, John had his ass humbly handed to him by a lady who goes by the name of Michelle who was legally blind when he started jujitsu for the first time. Although we may all feel that we can handle ourselves in a fight sometimes, we simultaneously don't know what we don't know about fighting either.

We’ve gotten feedback over the years that our listeners are big fans of EXORCISMS

Although that might sound like a bit extreme – we are not talking about real exorcisms here :)

It is a “thought exorcism” or “belief exorcism”. Even though Austin, John, and Amer are close and notably similar in many ways, they have their own blind spots about how to best live their lives and how their beliefs have been developed over time. I’m sure it’s relatable for all of us who have weekly calls to see how they are ✨constructively ✨quick to call each other our on their BS 😂

👀🚨BRACE YOURSELF FOR SOME HOT TAKES 🚨👀

Although this topic might be a little taboo, the guys have done a very interesting analysis this week on how their relationships with their partners including their individual fulfilment on health, wealth, love, and happiness can be improved by their partners taking on the role of a stay at home wife and mom.

Shockingly, a very single Amer has masterminded the responsibilities of the ideal stay at home wife and mom to Take Care of Your Mindset, Increase Your Knowledge, and Participate in Accountability Groups which align with the goals of your household.

On the wonderful off chance that the boys don’t get cancelled for this one 🥰 slide in our DMs and let us know your thoughts on this topic!

This week… after 150 episodes… we have John and Amer… without Austin… have a very interesting discussion on how your obstacles your new path to take in life.

“The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.”

  • the structure for Ryan Holiday's new book The Obstacle Is the Way: The Timeless Art of Turning Trials into Triumph

“Failing to prepare is preparing to fail”: Amer discusses where the mindset has been for a lot of the trades people who join TradeArc, where they are not being reactive to obstacles rather than proactive to resolve them/mitigate them.

It’s finally episode 150 and you guys are still sticking it through with us! 🥲 Couldn’t be more grateful for such an amazing fanbase 🥰

In this weeks episode, we do a deep dive into what the post pandemic yearning for mortgages and home improvement has looked like. If you consider what the average person pays to have a home (with a mortgage specifically), some people may end up paying more than 50% of their income for shelter… And this is only been a recent development.

This is super fascinating because so many industries in our current market are propped up on this pattern on the housing market continuing. If you think about how large the home services business is – i.e. $34 billion is how much money the Canadian government loses in cash jobs according to Amer and his mysterious source, there is an enormous amount of money in home services.

This week Amer, Austin, and John discussed the theory and understanding of how if you’re celebrating highs, you don’t give your brain a choice of being negative in the lows.

It becomes very difficult to remain stoic and indifferent in times you face push back from the world if you are continuing to celebrate the opposite of that.

We are really interested in hearing how you guys have approached this philosophy in your own lives and your business and if you have any different opinions from what we discussed in our podcast today!

John absolutely milks the drama for this analogy 😂

In this weeks episode, Amer, Austin, and John discuss how they would give themselves the reputation of someone desirable to work for – not just offer someone a job.

~~ The core ideology that has served him throughout life, Munger said, is the knowledge that the “safest way to try and get what you want is to try and deserve what you want.” (cnbc.com) ~~

Being a good employer puts you in a position of deserving good employees. If you’re asking yourself what makes a good employer?

Let’s look at the sure fire way you can make sure that your good employees quit on you:

  • pay them late,
  • treat them disrespectfully,
  • have no communication with them,
  • don’t give them a steady flow of work,
  • don’t have an online schedule,
  • don’t have safety policies

Make sure you’re the opposite of that^^^ and you’re probably on a course of successfully maintaining a happy crew 👷‍♂️

“To get what you want, you have to deserve what you want. The world is not yet a crazy enough place to reward a whole bunch of. undeserving people.” - Charlie Munger

Amer discusses some patterns he’s began to see in his industry and dives into a YouTube video he’s created for tradesmen who are coming out of jail.

We have a bit of a reflective episode for you here today, we want to know how often you guys say “no”. Austin has a realization after talking to Amer and John, that he personally says “no” a lot less than he thinks he does.

Not to say that saying yes is bad, it just seems to be a reflection of the perceived control you have over your life.

We really look deep into this phenomenon this week, leading into a conversation of where The Weekly Call started compared to where it is now.

We would love your feedback on this conversation!

Megan Shpyth, a realtor from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada.

In this conversation she shares about her successes and failures, her unique abilities and her outlook on life. Megan’s an incredibly intellectual person who was a completely open book in this conversation so that Austin, Amer, and John were able to dissect all that she’s accomplished in her life - which by the way, as you will hear, is quite the extensive list!

For all of the young business owners who are interested in real estate, this will be an extra educational episode for your knowledge whether you want to move towards real estate in your future career path or use real estate as an income source down the road!

Amer was invited to speak in front of all of them on a very unique topic that we don’t believe is discussed often enough in 2022.

We couldn't even tell you the number of times we've talked about mindset - hell, this presentation talks about mindset.

We are changing the pace today by talking about brain functionality and how it plays into your mindset, integrity, and all the other characteristics you need to run a successful business and even further - a fulfilling life.

This week, Austin, John, and Amer, discuss the experience needed to launch a business.

This is a highly debated topic when it comes to trades especially, if you ask a lot of trades people, you’ll hear that you need to be an absolute master of your craft to launch your own business. However, doing this you may run into the risk that you will run more of a job than your own business. If you are your best employee how could you possibly trust someone else to manage your business?

We are very very interested to know your feedback on this! Please give us feedback in the DMs!

In this week’s episode, Austin shares a valuable less than that he’s learned over the years – to adopt and abundance versus scarcity mindset.

When you’re starting a new business for the first time, it can be difficult to have an abundance mindset because you make constantly feel like you are looking down the barrel of a gun with all the pressure surrounding you.

If you are trying to onboard someone as a client and they are presenting you with objections and in that moment, you have a feeling of “I have to win this” or “wow this person keeping throwing a lot at me”, it is important to remember this is just a part of that person’s process. For that person to decide on your business, they’re putting you through their process and that’s okay. They’re taking the steps they need to, in order to sign on with you.

As soon as you believe that you literally shift from a scarcity mindset to abundance mindset!

On the other hand, Amer realizes that he wanted quick success when he started his business.

When you’re trying to run your own business and especially conduct a sale, nothing replaces being an expert, being a figure of authority, and earning the trust of people. Just finding a goldmine for advertising simple doesn’t do that – like running Facebook ads. You got to actually do the hard work.

After Amer picked up the gray work of running his business (since landing in Texas till release of Episode 135), it’s shown amazing results!

John & Amer: playing cupid and spreading rumors

~

In this week’s episode, it’s clear that a monopoly game in between these three hosts would be worse than the re-creation of Normandy.

Austin bring some level of festivity to this episode for the first time as Amer and John worry about the nations economics, as well as Austin‘s economics due to his apparent recent purchase of a Rydel Roofing monster truck (they absolutely butchered the summary)

But nothing short of magical, Austin gives a FULL PLAY BY PLAY of his recent proposal to Miranda, his longtime girlfriend (and a guest of this podcast!) And now we know that Amer and John would make fantastic business partners if they ever opened a Proposal Consulting firm together 💘

Live Episode from Quebec City!!!

In this week’s podcast, Amer, John, and Austin discuss a variety of topics in person, together in Quebec City!

Turns out John’s very good at playing charades when his phenomenal French linguistic abilities failed him.

Tune in to hear about John’s adventures driving people in between his University and Kelowna. Sounds like most of these people were picked up from prison?!

One another note, Amer discusses how he had a serious discussion with his parents that if their financial plans didn’t change, within six years there would be intense troubles in their bank accounts. It seems to be a rare occurrence that families work together and North American culture to resolve financial issues.

Interestingly enough, Austin mentions how one of his operators had the goal of changing his parents’ financial situation as well.

Do you need to be an expert in the field that you decide to start your business in?

In this week’s episode, Amer, Austin, and John discuss some really great points on if you are already a master in the trade that you decide to start your business in, then there’s a possibility that you will not hire talent for your company because you may feel that you yourself have all the perfected skills required to do the job already. And if you were to start a company that you were less experienced in, and you were scared and anxious about your ability to produce in your geographical area, you would likely put a lot more effort into recruiting top talent in your field.

“So long as you have the ability to act within virtue you should have preferred indifference to what you’re doing”

You’d think that your preference would be to do one thing, but the reason that you prefer certain things is because they’re so limited and cherished by time.

Scarcity breeds value to some degree.

Why is it that positive people get sucked into the darkness of negative people?

“I don’t know whether I should be limiting my time or eliminating it. I can think of people whom I genuinely love, who’s life trajectory just isn’t optimized. Isn’t it naïve to think I’m above their influence despite my confidence in myself?”

In this week’s episode, Amer shares his concerns around having personal relationships that he feels the need to compartmentalize to certain areas of his life, so that he does not get weighed down by negative influence.

It is possible that this phenomenon depends on how bright the lightness is and how dark the darkness is.

Listeners, let’s think about the last time you had a great day. Just kidding. Think about the last time you had a bad day.

Then try and think a little further: was it really all bad, from the moment you got out of bed? Probably not; one bad thing happened, and then the good lunch you had with your friends and the job interview you aced just didn’t seem so important anymore. Or maybe you were at work, and your boss is gave you some well-deserved praise. Then she told you there was one line on your paperwork that needed to be tweaked, and before you knew it, you were beating yourself up for that one mistake for the rest of the week. Or maybe you went home after work and turned on the news. The coverage never surprises you: war, crime, disaster.

Maybe you wonder why this is. Your answer? Negative news attracts more consumers (Nguyen & Claus, 2013). Slide in our DMs to tell us about your story!

It’s interesting that most people around us are always on a constant time, pace, and schedule.

In this week’s episode, Austin, Amer, and John discussed the concept of island time, weighing the benefits and consequences of this type of mentality in the business world.

Comparing most western cultures to Austin’s experience in Jamaica, it’s interesting to think that depending on your goals, this mentality could either be extremely beneficial to your personal fulfilment or extremely dangerous.

“Maybe you were all kind of fucked a little But, maybe we’re all a little unnecessarily paranoid in the west… people are genuinely enjoying their quality of life here” - (Austin)

If you just believe that you’re an amazing salesman, and you’re actually not closing your deals and you’re blaming the world, you are not doing it properly.

You also need to have a believe that you are amazing at getting feedback and you are amazing at actually understanding how to perceive things. Additional to all of this, you should be excited and curious to find ways to continuously improve yourself. It’s the combination of all of these things that leads to success.

Amer, John, and Austin record the podcast every Sunday at 7:30 PM without conflicts at least 95% of the time… let’s consider the odds that both Austin and john miss a podcast recording on the same night!!

In this week’s podcast, Austin gives us the rundown of how he ends up in the hospital after his first day at Rydel Roofing.

As perfectly stated by Austin himself “the world must be a shit sandwich today, what a statistical anomaly”.

~

“When these things first happen to me, I have all of those instinctive reactions to be pissed – and then I have to think to myself, man, I’m 25 years old, I’m healthy, I absolutely adore my relationships, I love my life, I have such an amazing group of supportive people…

As if I would give myself the opportunity to be all pouty and pissed!

I’ve had to reframe this entire event in my head so many times today, but those thoughts wouldn’t be happening if I wasn’t a part of this weekly call for the past two years.”

~

“So you just carried a 90 pound bag of shingles up a ladder?? I don’t think I could physically pull that off.” (John)

Let’s remind ourselves that it was a 24ft. ladder also.

Strongman Austin truly never sleeps.

Sounds like a pretty good reason to hire Rydel Roofing if you ask me 😌

It’s 80% mindset, 20% business tactics.

In this week’s episode, Amer discusses the efforts gone into building the winning formula for running a business.

I was so focussed on just the tactics that I sort of just assumed everyone knew what we knew - about feedback loops, how to build your identity, the power of stories.

To build the entire program took an X amount of time and the mindset week took three times that amount of time, drawing from the conversations in this podcast, landmarks leaderships, quotes from John – for example when there are times that there’s a second voice in your head creating connections and ideologies, it’s important to recognize that the voice isn’t you. (Robert Greene)

Earlier on in the episode, Austin discusses how he dealt with a tough situation - without the wisdom of our stoic, John Morgan III. As soon as that police officer peels off, it’s me versus me. He’s gone and I’m never going to see him again - maybe I’ll see him again when I go to fight the ticket? But I will never be in that exact same situation on that exact same day ever again - and I really became present to this surprise event which was extremely negative –

I had just realized that I am not impacted by this (in the grand scheme of things) and I am suffering more in my imagination than in reality.

How do you navigate competitors and integrity at the same time?

In Episode 120; “Financing Your Freedom”, John gives an example of how he markets his business to customers who he actually thinks his services are best for and compares that integrity against companies who try to sell their business regardless of who it truly benefits.

“There’s integrity in knowing your weaknesses are, who your business is for and who it’s not for. When you’re up against a competitor it is so disingenuous to just talk trash.” (1:55, John Morgan III)

“I believe in something called the mirror which is usually that gossip is a form of judgement and whatever you judge people for is a reflection of some sort of insecurity in yourself.” (1:59, Amer)

Listeners, take this week’s podcast to reflect on when you last passed judgment on someone. Do you think it is possible for this judgement to have formed from your own insecurities? “Just try telling someone in University that it may not be worth it.” [John Morgan III]

~

In this week's episode, The Weekly Call boys explore why people are more willing to accept information with more history (old) over modern information (new) to maintain their previously conceived notions of reality. This is an easily applicable concept to investing in a home or university degree.

“This is why I loved studying philosophy, first things you get taught are fallacies and finding them and I just found 20 major cognitive biases that we fall under that don’t allow us to make effective decisions. The bandwagon effect is a common one fact which is the probability of one person adopting a belief increasing based on the number of people who hold that belief.” [Amer]

We’ve very much upheld the idea that homeownership is the path to wealth and getting a university degree is part of that process, even though we have evidence that there are many other ways to becoming educated and successful.

“I think we can all agree that $1M is too much to pay to go to university… which means that that there is A PRICE where university does not provide enough value for the cost.” [John Morgan III]

“I started working for Student Works when I was 19 and now I’m 25. It’s been 6 years. It felt like this banquet was an acknowledgment of all the work I’ve ever done for the company.” (Austin)

In this week’s podcast, Austin reflects on his last banquet with Student Works, a beautiful evening to celebrate which was also on his 25th birthday! Over his whole career with the company, he’s had an invaluable experience building mental roadmaps to solving problems not only in work but extending to his whole life.

Earlier on in the episode, Austin and John discovered their mutual fascination with locomotives and insisted on discussing it for ~20 minutes as Amer gets frustrated and starts asking the question we’ve all been waiting for –

“condense this – why should I actually care about trains?” (Amer)

Insider Tip: Skipping ahead to ~1 hour in, The Weekly Call boys also discuss the effects of some political decisions on small businesses over the past year.

“Complacency is death.” (Range Rover Tristan)

~

In any given problem, one must first distinguish whether they are approaching the issue from “above or below the line”.

To approach a situation from Above the Line, one must evaluate whether they are taking accountability, ownership, and responsibility for the factors that are in their control.

“Regardless of the situation - like the building exploded OK! what could you have done to prevent that from happening? Let's forget all of the stuff that you're not actually in control of. That's all below the line which would be blame, excuse, and denial.”

People who have fewer walls can look at situations objectively and are comfortable taking accountability for the inadequate results they’ve received in return.

“As soon as you’re coaching somebody and they’re willing to go yeah 8K in debt because of XYZ, I'm out of shape because of whatever, I know now we're speaking the same language or having genuine conversation. I'm not getting a front anymore and we can actually move forward [to solve the situation]."

“Who the * lives with a jar of gasoline in their *ing place.” (John Morgan III)

Do you think any of your suffering “goes away” as you move closer to your goal?

~

In this week’s episode, Amer, Austin, and John discuss the impacts of going through hardships voluntarily and how it strengthens your abilities to manage hardships which are unavoidable.

It seems that building a tolerance to a suffering, is the key to lessening suffering. Not because tragedies are necessarily damped, but because you’ve developed tools to manage your actions and emotions over time.

It may not be true that financial independence lessens someone’s suffering, although it may be one critical factor that can reduce stress. However, when looking at probabilities of character/lifestyle, the person who becomes financially independent is most often someone who has taken on adversity and that journey of self development best prepares them for catastrophe.

If you’re running a business, you can either create a role that you can fill with a person or find an exceptional person to build a role around. You can do much more with the latter option since you grow so accustomed to specific strengths and weaknesses.

On the other hand, there are situations where you have exceptional individuals come into your life where you can clearly see the benefit of them guiding you instead of you molding them into a role. At this point, they create a role for themselves, and that role becomes a mold for the future.

~

By looking at these relationships as transformative rather than transactional, you may have a different perspective on how valuable that experience is to you regardless of whether you would be “royally screwed” without them.

The amount of emotional investment someone puts into a given subject will directly relate to how likely it is they will take criticism, personally.

If you think back to past experiences in your life when you’ve acted emotionally – compared to logically, you may notice that you have favoured an idea, irrationally because of the personal beliefs you built over time, closing yourself off from other possibilities. When it comes to sentimental beliefs, it may almost feel like “there is a big sunk cost if [one] were to switch camps” (Austin).

In this week’s episode, Amer, Austin, and John explore the concept of making a distinction between an idea and the person who holds it. Without embracing this concept, any opposition on an idea will likely be received as an opposition to yourself. (John)

In this week’s podcast, Amer presents the following quote:

“If what we desire is not existent then we ought to desire what is existent. We should not choose the permanence of sorrow rather the permanence of happiness. And he

who is rendered sorrowful by the missing of things desired and the nonbeing of the nonexistent his sorrow will never come to an end because in every state of his life he

will be losing a loved things or missing a desired thing. Sorrow and happiness and are opposites that do not abide in the soul together.”

According to this statement from The British Journal of Middle Eastern Studies, the fastest way to achieve happiness is to not only desire less but take the time to

appreciate the good in the present state of your life.

It seems the answer may be to build habits that you are happy to do that inherently make you into the person who is deserving of your goal.

potential gain in the future? Does this process truly make you happy?

“Do you think your actions match what you think you’re known for?”

~

In this week’s podcast, Amer shows off his brilliant artistic skills as he illustrates a summary of his wild Friday night – the same night that Toronto moves to Step 3 of Ontario’s “Roadmap to Reopen” plan.

As Amer notices a blind spot in his self identification, he makes a commitment to evaluate how integrous he is on a daily basis and portray himself truthfully as who he is when he’s not being observed.

Anyone who strives for self improvement could benefit from occasionally taking a step back to consider if their choices reflect the person they want to be or become in the future. After all, “how could you possibly improve at something if you already think you know it?” [John Morgan III]

“The best metric to measure success for an individual is their integrity.”

~

Meeting commitments with consistency and integrity, not only in someone’s career but the rest of their life will largely indicate their actual success and ability to succeed in the future. Stemming from routine, healthy mindset, the right goals, the right reasons, and the right network, strong integrity is a key signal in someone’s character which shows they have the fortitude to earn their winnings.

In this week’s podcast, Amer, Austin, and John discuss how an individual’s ability to consistently generate wealth, will statistically reflect on how successful they appear to any observer.

There are many materialistic possessions that are flaunted to create the façade of a luxurious lifestyle but remember, this noise is not all is what it appears to be... 👻

“Feeling loved is much more important to me than I would allow myself to believe at times.”

~

With a 6-year gap away from his mother’s side of his family and a 12-year gap from his father’s, John reflects on how this estrangement can make family members feel like strangers with a familiarity.

When there is so much transformation in a person between interactions it can be a challenge to prove to others the level of unwitnessed dedication it takes to be successful. Especially if there’s been lack of acknowledgement for hard work in the past.

In this week’s podcast, Austin points out that most of John’s other values reflect a more critical mindset of focusing on things within control while Amer questions whether proving success to others or himself is more valuable.

Normally with little concern to how he’s perceived, John’s value of verbal positive reinforcement from family is an interesting contrast.

Are you making the most of your youth, or is it slipping away from you while you chase materialistic goals?

Amer opens up about how prioritizing business and money has left him little to no time to find himself or enjoy simple things like going shopping for new clothes. He also admits that he measures his success with income, something that hasn't come easily to him over the last year, meaning that he is dealing with an internal battle of feeling unsuccessful or fraudulent.

This is a feeling that Austin shares from time to time, knowing that he is relied on as a coach/mentor, but yet he's making mistakes that he expects others not to.

All three agree that the mindsets they have right now would not be well-suited if they actually faced a period of hardship/adversity rather than riding the highs that we're experiencing right now.

There are two types of people: those who follow their heart and make decisions off of emotion, or those who remain purely logical and make decisions based on the data in front of them. In this episode, we explore various scenarios where emotions can lead you to making the wrong decisions, ultimately building the case for why logical thinking (looking at the data) is the clear and obvious winner.

You'll go to amazing lengths to hide your deficiencies and pad your ego, including developing whole new personality traits. These maladaptive behaviours can sometimes turn into your winning formula, but they can also lead to arrogance and overconfidence. Amer reflects back on the last year of starting his business and realizes that arrogance may be the defining theme of this era of his life, and tries to pinpoint where that came from.

Further to our previous debates on CRB and other government programs, we engage in a thought-provoking conversation about the minimum wage, whether or not it accomplishes what it's supposed to, and on a more macro level, how programs like this may keep us from being competitive in the new world economy. Also, what do we make of the future of currency and investing, and why are we skeptical of investments that don't have an intrinsic value to them.

As business owners, we love being in control of our incomes because it incentivizes us to work hard and get creative in order to profit. However, we live in a strange time right now where CERB exists and we are partially dissuaded from working. As perfectly capable business owners, should we be claiming the CERB money, or should we continue as though nothing has changed and fend for ourselves? This is an issue Amer has struggled with for a while, as he was taking the cheques while he got his business up and running (even though he didnt't necessarily need it). Austin and John chime in with their opinions on the topic, and finally, we finish the episode off with a classic whack vs. wise for you guys.

When your schedule is full and you’re being pulled in multiple directions at once, it’s easy for small things to fall through the cracks and pile up on you. These are what we call “time debts” because they’ll weigh you down and force you to take time out of your schedule to catch up. Being productive and not leaving loose ends to follow up on is so important when you’re juggling multiple tasks, and as business owners, this is an essential habit.

On a similar note, John talks about all of the tiny crisis’ we have in our heads everyday like: being late, losing something, or being nervous about a meeting. Our initial response is always stress, but if you take a step back, you’ll realize that you’re in control of how you react. As John says, there’s nothing stopping you from being a happy late person🤔

Austin and John compare the roles and responsibilities of each person in their respective businesses and identify 2 very different structures. One focuses on autonomy and trust, while the other is very hands on from a management perspective which we come to realize is a severe bottleneck when operating at scale and potentially demotivating to the employees.

While you follow along, consider how your management style compares to what we discuss and see if it's time to make some adjustments yourself before we get too deep into production season.

That being said, if we can learn to focus on the big principles from different fields and understand how they intertwine with each other, we will be able to think faster, more accurately, and make smarter decisions without having to concern ourselves over the minor details.

The big principles we’re talking about are called “Mental Models” and that’s what we explore in today’s episode. Money is a great tool and it’s obviously the reason why we all work, but what makes you the most money may not be enjoyable or satisfy your interests, and this is called the golden handcuffs because you begin to feel trapped by the money you're earning.

In this episode, Austin questions whether or not running his painting business is where he belongs long-term and weighs out other opportunities that may be more stimulating mentally. Amer and John help him see that in order to make the right decision, he needs to decide how this change would fit in with his present and future goals. This is a delicate balancing act between where you WANT to be mentally, and where you NEED to be financially which can be extremely hard to measure against each other, so Amer and John help coach Austin to discover what's important to him so that he can make a more grounded decision.

Knowing that we have many business owners listening, it's very possible that you may be in a similar situation now or in the near future, and we hope this conversation helps you identify what your long-term goals are and how your current work coincides with them so that you don't find yourselves trapped with the golden handcuffs on.

John has taken a big stride this year, having already booked $500k+ of work for the summer, bringing his workload to a level that he hasn’t seen before. Naturally, the more that is on your plate, the more frequently issues will arise. John points out that he’s having an increasingly harder time blocking the noise out since undesirable situations are happening nearly every day at his size.

Of course, running a growing business also comes with the perks of increased choice in how you allocate your resources (mainly time & money), which has become a big interest of John’s. This part of the conversation focuses on the perks of incorporating, the different structures that have proven useful for the 3 of us, and how growing as capitalists will ultimately depend on their ability to allocate resources effectively into their businesses and outside investments.

Would Amer, Austin, & John make good partners in a joint venture? This is a question that they take seriously in this episode as they explore what the next stage of growth looks like beyond what they’re currently doing.

There’s nothing more distracting than the small pebble in your shoe that causes discomfort with every step, but it’s not a big enough pain for you to stop and get rid of it. Small, repetitive annoyances can have the same effect in your business, slowly eating away at your sanity or your bottom line and slipping under your radar. This episode is about practicing self-awareness and learning the ability to examine your situation objectively, seek improvements, and be your own coach.

We also touch on specialization vs. diversification as it relates to your time, your money, and how you choose to invest them, potentially debunking the myth that you should have multiple streams of income. Finally, Amer grills Austin on the way he runs his business and exposes a few key changes that he believes should be incorporated to increase his performance.

Plenty of great tips were shared in this episode including a fantastic new training method that John is trying out this year. You’ll have to dial it in to find out what it is!

Today we're joined by Justin Georgopoulos and Broder Currie, the highest selling rookie operators within Student Works East to this point in the season. These soon-to-be roommates from London Ontario are chasing down the rookie records in painting & window cleaning this year so we had to bring them on the call to see what motivates them, what their winning formulas are, and whether or not they'll still be sitting on the top of the leaderboards at the end of the summer. These two guys are so confident in themselves that they each agree to put $1000 on the line that they'll finish the year in the #1 position. That's a bold move and you can bet that we'll be holding them accountable to it!

What do Justin and Broder think the strongest mindset is made of?

  1. Gratitude.
  2. The fear of wasting your potential.

It was a blast having these guys on and we look forward to checking up on them later in the year!

Are we all perfect exactly the way we are? Isn’t the idea of “perfect” subjective to whatever you make it mean? And what do we make of characteristics that are clearly undesirable… do they make you imperfect? This is a great philosophical debate that consumes a majority of the conversation on this episode.

In other news, John continues his record pace with such ease that he actually had to raise his prices, Amer got excited about a sales call with a celebrity and blew it, and Austin is quietly having his best recruiting year to date.

All of this & more on this great episode, so dial it in!

If you knocked on 1,000,000 doors, could you imagine the characters you’d run into and stories you’d have?

In this episode, Amer surpasses the 1 million impression mark on his Facebook ads and we kick things off by taking a look inside his automated marketing machine. We follow this up by reading some of the hilarious comments he’s gotten and sharing our most memorable estimate experiences (including doing an estimate for YouTuber Veritasium’s dad)

There are so many more interesting topics that come up in this episode, such us: probabilities, Bayesian statistics, and their practical uses in real life, some checkups on each of our businesses, a whack vs wisdom, and John tells us he will never buy a book again!!! 😵

After Austin and Amer both go negative on the week, we get together and have one of the more important conversations to date on the podcast. What starts out as a complacency check and admission of guilt on Austin’s part, turns into a broader discussion on the topic of communication.

Amer shares the experiences in his childhood that led to his obsession with public speaking, what he has learned from studying/practicing it, and how it has helped him so far. The main takeaway we get from this is that the more unconscious (not structured) your communication feels, the more captivating you are to the listener. What a valuable lesson for us to learn for the podcast!!!

Today we’re joined by Terry Jones: a man with an incredible track record of leadership over his 31 years in the military, of which, 12 were spent as the captain of a 70-man submarine crew. We brought Terry on to share some stories and give his perspective on the traits that make a great leader. His compassionate & relationship-focused approach to leadership roles is not what you'd expect to see in the military, but in the closed environment of a submarine (not dissimilar to a small business) this approach proved to be very effective for maintaining morale and group cohesion.

It’s clear from this conversation that leadership is not a power that can be given to you with a job title. It is a power that you must earn over time by consistently proving your knowledge and earning the respect of others around you. The takeaways from this interview can be applied in all areas of your life, but most notably in the businesses that we all run and the various relationships we have to manage daily.

This episode starts off with an update on Amer’s business. He’s been scheming up a renaissance of the construction industry and he’s finally starting to see the results of his marketing. In fact, you may already have been bombarded by his FB ads lol…

John, being a skeptic of the coaching industry, reminds Amer to stay grounded in the face of his early results. This leads into a whole conversation about the inner-workings of the coaching/social media marketing world and the sneaky tricks they use on us.

Later on, we realize that somewhere along the line our weekly call has turned into a recorded coaching session and has started to sound a bit preachy at times. We decide live on the call to make a few changes in order to improve the quality of our conversations which in turn will bring the podcast back to its best form.

After recording "John's Folly", John takes our feedback and makes changes to his sales process. Admittedly, he knew that tightening up his sales calls would get results, but boy was he shocked to see how big of a difference these slight changes made. His booking rate shot up, his sales were outrageous, and best of all... he's having a whole lot of fun doing it!

Later on, we have the most epic Whack vs. Wisdom yet. Tomoki Okamura, an avid listener of the podcast, creates a hilarious rap song dedicated to The Weekly Call Podcast and it absolutely steals the show.

John and Amer reflect on themselves growing up as they notice that their views on the world are shifting. The focus is no longer on the immediate and the money. Instead, it’s all about the long term game and the fulfillment in what they do.

Amer opens up about an insecurity he has felt for a while because of an arbitrary goal he had set for himself as a teenager, and more recently, the revenue goal he had for his business in 2020. He has fallen behind on both of these goals, not for a lack of effort, but simply because he didn’t know what it would take to accomplish them in the first place.

The key lesson here is: be careful not to beat yourself up over unrealistic expectations you have of yourself if you underestimated the inputs required to achieve them.

There's no talk of strategy or any tips to follow in this episode… just a casual conversation between two friends and an opportunity to get to know the guys on a more personal level.

Hope you enjoy!

If something CAN happen, it WILL happen. That is the law of entropy. How does this show up in life? Well, holes begin to appear when you become complacent, and these holes continue to grow and cause chaos around you as long as you let them exist.

Immediately after talking about this concept, Austin and Amer notice that complacency has set into John’s sales process over the years. He has neglected to pre-qualify his leads properly and his booking percentage is suffering because of it, leading to a slow start to the year.

As good friends should… Amer and Austin point out some changes John can make to increase his productivity. Because his ego gets involved, he is unwilling to take the criticism and the conversation starts to get uncomfortable.

Eventually, John admits to his ignorance and agrees to test their recommendations, but not before calling the whole conversation a “d*ck measuring contest”.

YES. John actually said that.

Dial this episode in to see if you’re making the same fatal mistake John was, and learn how to fix it before entropy takes control!

"If you want anything done, ask a busy man to do it. He is busy, full of work, because he is able and willing to work."

Austin comes back from nearly a month long break over the christmas holiday, which he used to rest, spend time with family, and get set for an even busier year in 2021. What did he learn from his time away? ... that rest is exhausting, your ability to handle your work slowly decays, and because of that after 2 weeks your time off seems much less effective.

John and Amer make a distinction between estimating what you can do vs setting a goal for yourself, and explain how each one might be useful in different situations. They also talk about the themes of over-leveraging and risk-taking, which are common traits of ultra successful founders/CEOs, but traits that don't seem necessary to see above average financial success. Is it worth over-leveraging to potentially achieve your goals sooner, or is it true that the turtle really does win the race?

2020 has come to an end which means it’s time to look forward and plan for the year ahead. We all have our lists of New Year’s resolutions and goals for 2021, but no plan or goal will matter unless you keep yourself in integrity.

This means:

  • Doing what you said you would do
  • Doing what you know to do (full effort)
  • Doing what others would expect you to do

(even if you didn’t tell them you would) * And doing all of the above ON TIME

In this episode, John confesses that there were 24 occasions this year where he was out of integrity. Amer guides him through the process of understanding the negative impacts it has had on people, his business, and most of all the mental friction that he has to deal with because he is living out of integrity.

By doing this, John realizes that his lack of integrity is actually deteriorating his self-confidence and causing him unnecessary anxiety surround his goals for next year.

We then go over the steps he has to take to restore his integrity with the people he has let down (including himself), and create a new rule which he will follow in 2021 that will keep him in integrity at all times.

Dial this episode in and try to figure out where you need to restore integrity in your life so that you can make 2021 your best year yet!

John and Amer sit down 1-on-1 this week while Austin is away on holidays and have a captivating conversation about their lives, their aspirations, their similarities and their differences.

Amer kicks the episode off with an article that outlines the lifestyles of people in various ranges of net worth. For example: what does someone with a 5 million dollar net worth do in a day? What is important to them? What is not? And how do these things change for people with different levels of net worth?

This brings up the question... Why are we so interested in getting "rich", and do we really want what we think we want? These questions highlight key differences between John and Amer which is evident in the types of businesses they choose to run.

In the other half of this episode, we get the chance to hear the rest of John's story. What events lead to his family being raided by police, why did he bounce around and live with so many different people, and what lessons did he learn along the way that shaped who he is today?

All of these questions will finally be answered in this episode, so grab your headphones and get dialled in!

When you get rejected do you take it personally, or do you see it as a part of a bigger game?

This conversation is brought up because Amer shares a disastrous dating experience that ends in rejection. Austin and John remind him to keep up his abundance mentality and to see that this rejection is NOT the end of the road so long as he has an infinite mindset.

John carries the conversation to the next level when he brings game theory (behavioural economics) and morality into the mix and explains how an infinite mindset allows you to set aside your ego, deal with rejection and other undesirable outcomes, and make decisions that are in the best interest of your entire community, rather than being self-serving.

We have an incredible episode for you today with Jordan Kipnes, the VP of development at Student Works West, a proud supporter of the delayed discounting movement, and a pretty badass DJ under his alias "DJ Sanchez".

You’ll notice a reoccurring theme in this episode around the topic of “awareness”.

What does this mean?

It means to be curious, to be honest about your priorities, your strengths, and your flaws, and to use this information to make the best decision in any given situation.

He explains why he loves commission-based jobs, why he is a firm believer in the franchise model, and how he finds that exhibiting competency  in your work will make you love what you do so much more.

He also gives his advice to new business owners starting out in the Student Works program, explains the importance of remaining humble, and encourages you to keep trying to learn and improve from the people around you. Make sure you stay to the end to catch us dancing through an epic outro to Jordan's Mexico Mix.

It’s been a long time coming… but today, we finally get a chance to sit down with Austin’s girlfriend, Miranda, to get a deeper understanding of their relationship, and to dig up some juicy gossip about our dear friend that he would never share on the podcast.

Miranda tells us the story of how her and Austin met, what it was like to handle a long distance relationship for 3 years, how she was convinced to start her own Student Works franchise after seeing his success with it, and how her priorities have since shifted to pursuing a career in real estate sales.

She gives some amazing advice on how to communicate and set expectations with your significant other, how to create balance in your life (which is especially useful for the business owners/workaholics out there), and what it takes to maintain a healthy relationship with an entrepreneurial type.

When asked what the 3 most important characteristics to having a successful relationship with an entrepreneur are, she answered:

  1. Communication
  2. Patience
  3. Flexibility

Today we examine the idea of subcontracting (hiring a mercenary) as opposed to hiring and managing your own staff. This comes with many benefits; the biggest of which is the savings on insurance and payroll deductions that allow businesses hiring subcontractors to be more price competitive. You see this happening all the time in an industry like ride-sharing, but it is also very prevalent in the home contracting world that we all work in.

We’re here to tell you why sub-contracting is actually not in your best interest, and that the cost savings come at the cost of reliability, manageability, quality, and a loss of control over your business’ brand & image.

You will learn Amer’s #1 tip for how to overcome the “price is too high” objection, we will talk about reinvesting in your business vs personal assets (and how this varies depending on the business you run), and then we get into a big chat about how big news outlets, influencers, etc are all becoming “mercenaries” for hire by anyone looking to purchase credibility.

And of course... make sure you stay dialed in until the very end to hear John react to Tekashi 6ix9ine’s hit song “Gooba”.☎️☎️☎️

“I am a top performer”

“Success and achievement come naturally to me”

“I’m going to insert big audacious goal here this year!”

We’ve all heard of self-affirmations, but are they actually a good tool to use?

Today, we catch Amer and John in the middle of a heated debate that happened during our trip to Vancouver. We’re coming to you this morning with a very special episode as we celebrate the first anniversary of the podcast and our first time meeting each other!

Because of the Sober October challenge, Amer has had a lot of time to fill. What did he do with it all? He started searching for the best short stories in the world. Throughout this episode we take turns telling a few of our favourite short stories and discuss the meaning behind them which leads us into many fascinating conversations about whether we agree with the character’s decisions, what we would do in their shoes, and how we can learn from them.

We eventually shift to the subject of money and spending habits where we try to answer the questions: How do we prioritize knowledge vs income opportunities? On this episode we share our thoughts on the polarization being created in the news, how they create it, and why it benefits them to do it. It has become so easy to win people over by presenting a polarizing statistic and making them feel under attack, or disgusted with the other side, and this is how media outlets are luring you in. The example we use in this podcast, is that during this pandemic, the top 20 richest people in Canada have increased their net-worth by over $30 Billion Dollars. If that seems unfair, it’s because it was designed by the writer of the article to feel that way. We unpack the tactics that are at play here and explain how they are purposefully presenting this statistic in a way that fuels controversy. The goal of doing this is to promote critical thinking and explain how you can put together a solid argument instead of using these scare tactics.

We also discuss the different types of narcissism and the personality traits that come with them, share our latest Sober October updates, and we have John react to a new Drake verse from 21 Savage’s latest release “Mr. Right Now”.

What is success? We use that word so often to describe a prominent figure, a business, or a relationship, but how do we actually measure our own success? Is it determined by our net worth? A certain level of knowledge? The level of freedom we have? This is the revolving theme of this week’s episode, as we try to figure it out for ourselves.

John (having left school to self-teach) asks Austin what he has learned from his time in school, whether it is practical in the real world, and if it was worth the time and money spent on it. This leads into a debate about whether he would have been better off investing his tuition money into a business and learning from first-hand experience.

Austin admits that yes, he could make more money if he weren’t committed to school, but that extra income isn’t necessarily the most important thing for him. He explains why he chose to continue his education, how he plans to use his degree to complement his business experience, and how his real-world experience allows him to get so much more out of his master’s degree.

You’ll also get to hear how all of our Sober October challenges are going so far. Is Amer still alive without his social media??? Dial this episode in to find out! ☎️☎️☎️

WE'RE GOING TO VANCOUVER! Listen to find out why!

Are you really as productive or as hard-working as you tell yourself? Or could it be that your ego telling you that because it’s what you want to believe?

John calls Amer out on his sleep schedule to make the point that he’s likely not as productive as he thinks he is, and that he’s probably staying up all night working because during the day he’s so distracted trying to keep track of the conversations and storylines happening on social media.

Amer takes this criticism and decides that in addition to his “Sober October” challenge of not using social media, he will also change his sleep schedule to try working during normal daytime hours.

Other notable topics include: VANCOUVER MEETUP IS HAPPENING OCTOBER 27th AT THE STUDENT WORKS OFFICE, how shiny object syndrome can devastate your productivity, more conversation on ego and it’s impairment of your self-perception, and how the sincerity of direct communication has been lost with social media.

This is an amazing episode that fits in perfectly with the Sober October challenges that many of our listeners are undertaking with us. We’d love to get some updates from everyone as you progress through the month so DM us or send us an email at theweeklycallpod@gmail.com if you’re taking a break from social media.

If you would like to come to the Vancouver event on the 27th, please RSVP using our Instagram sorry. Again, if you’re taking a break from social media, email us if you plan on coming. Now get this episode dialled in and enjoy! ☎️☎️☎️

You can work your ass off to maintain mediocracy, or you can prepare for greatness. If you train, if you practice good habits, and if you devote time to learning, this is exactly what you’re doing. You’re preparing yourself for greatness. This is the main theme of this episode.

Other topics include: the importance of decentralized power, Austin's fourth and final back to school tip, and a lesson that John’s mom taught him about why it’s always easier to get the prettiest girl, which we relate this back to the business world where we have all found it easier to book work while doing the things that other people are shying away from.

John also announces a new book giveaway that will be happening in the next couple of weeks (more details coming in a separate post mid-week).

And of course, we talk about the delayed discounting merch and how it represents the ultimate delayed discounting test… What do you value more? $30 now, or seeing Amer get his head shaved a little over a month from now? If you haven’t gotten one yet, the link to the store is here.

Do you have the training and mental fortitude of a warrior? Do you know the battleground and the enemy that you’re taking on? And most importantly, do you know yourself? This episode explores concepts from the ancient text “The Art of War” by Sun Tzu, a military strategist and philosopher, and relates them back to running a business in the present day.

We further our discussion on John’s philosophy that “movement is the foundation of stillness” after a listener challenges us with a question on early retirement. This brings out John’s personal view on retirement, what he believes to be the four pillars of happiness, and also leads us into our most detailed and interesting delayed discounting conversation yet!

Other topics in this episode include: a helpful philosophy that is sent in by a listener, the beloved “Whack vs Wisdom” segment, the third instalment of Austin’s back to school tips, and a whole bunch sales lessons that will turn you into a closing machine!

At some point in your life, you may find yourself in a situation where you are absolutely exhausted and can’t handle adding anything else to your plate. You’ll feel like you’ve found your ceiling, but other people around you may be able to keep going. How come they can do it and you can’t?

The answer is: to reverse engineer the structure of your life (or business) from the goal down to the individual inputs so that you can more efficiently complete the tasks at hand.

In this episode, John breaks down exactly which inputs are needed for him to accomplish what he has in his business this year. You’ll learn his strategy of reverse engineering a sales goal to figure out how to combine time, money, and human capital to accomplish it. Amer then provides some insight on how he could optimize his profitability.

Later on, John reacts to the popular hip hop song “Did You See NAV?”, Austin draws similarities between the time value of money (delayed discounting) and the time value of emotions, Amer talks about using fear as a motivator, and John closes out the episode with some mind-bending takeaways from his latest read.
