Interview on ABC Radio Queensland
Jennah's training journey started when her brother, also a refrigeration technician, asked her to help out a few hours a week. From there, Jennah grew a keen interest in the industry and, with the completion of her Certificate III in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration in 2021, she is believed to be the only qualified female refrigeration technician in Cairns – a statistic she's hoping to help change.
Jennah was named the 2022 Queensland Apprentice of the Year and 2022 Australian Apprentice of the Year at the Australian Training Awards.

Australia is facing a digital skills shortage. Australia needs 1.2 million Tech workers by 2030 according to a report by the Tech council of Australia.
The report revealed that there are significant shortages, particularly for technical and experienced tech roles. Vacancy rates in tech is 60% higher than the national average and are forecast to grow at triple the rate.
The most severe shortages are in technical occupations like software programmers and computer network professionals but there are also big gaps in commercial and creative roles like product managers.
Todays podcast is to explore different people’s pathways to their job how people can get into the industry and to speak on an initiative called SkillUp which you can use to identify your digital skills and gaps and also find courses that can get you started, build your skills and get a rewarding career in the digital tech sector.

Yasmin King: CEO SkillsIQ , Cris Matkowski: 2018 - Gold Medallist – Cookery, 2019 - Skill Squad – Cookery VET Alumni .
This episode explores the experience of Cris Matkowski who entered into the Apprenticeship space in commercial cookery. Straight out of school.
Cris was a Gold Medal winner at the National WorldSkills Competition in 2018 and went on to represent Austalia at the International Worldskills Competition in Russia in 2019. He is also a VET Alumni member.
Cris speaks of what influenced his decision to undertake an apprenticeship and his journey through the training and beyond. But the story is also about what the apprenticeship has given him- success, awards, international travel mentoring and guest speaking opportunities- just to name a few. It is a great story of where VET can take you. We also hear from Yasmin King- CEO SkillsIQ on what is happening in the Apprenticeship and skills training space, and what are the emerging skills areas people could think about . We finish up with some insights and advice for parents,employers, career advisers and people to get greater participation in apprenticeships and skills training.

Samantha has the great job to lead a team of school educators in inspiring the VET students of the future through her work in a school that offers alternative vocational education options, training paths and mentors for students and encouraging students to create their own study and career paths. We ask Samantha about the programs and other work in building confidence in students. We finish up with some insights and advice for parents, employers, career advisers and people to get greater participation in Vocational education and skills training.

Rebecca Hudson - VET Alumni, and kathleen Jones- VET Alumni,
This episode explores the experience of Rebecca Hudson and Kathleen Fenson, 2 women working in what is referred to as male dominated occupations. Rebecca is the WA trainee of the year 2019 and an Australian Training awards finalist. She works in the construction and mining sector as a crane driver.
Kathleen is the 2018 Qld Trainee of the year and Australian Training awards finalist. Kathleen was a mechanic and is now working as a Telecommunications Technician. They tell their story of their experiences and decisions in choosing to work in male dominated occupations and speak about perceptions verses reality of working in the trades sectors. They also share their story about the decision to undertake vocational education and training and how this has allowed them to realise their passion and career of choice.
We finish up with some insights and advice from Rebecca and Kathleen for people who are considering their study pathway, parents, career advisers.

This episode explores experience of two mature aged apprentices, Anthony Di Cristafaro and Rekeisha Voss. Anthony is the Western Australian apprentice of the year for 2019, and went on to be a finalist at the Australian Training Awards. Rekeisha is the 2019 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander student of the year at the Australian Training Awards, and at the Western Australian Training Awards.
They both are sharing with us their experience and their journey and the decision to become a mature age apprentice or a trainee . Anthony and Rekeisha share with us how they made that decision, the issues that they had to confront in changing their jobs as a mature age apprentice, and then talk about insights and the success that they had in making that decision.
We finish up with some insights and advice from both Anthony and to Keisha, to parents, to people considering changing their jobs and to career advisors.
