Refestramus Episode information:The Pennsylvania Rock Show welcomes Refestramus (re-fes-TRA-mus), the Chicago-based progressive hard rock project led by songwriter and drummer Derek Ferguson. In Episode 839, Bill sits down with the band for an in-depth conversation about the band’s unusual name, musical influences, songwriting, recording process, and the creative ideas behind Refestramus.
The name Refestramus was coined by Derek’s mother to mean “rearrange,” and that concept perfectly describes the project’s approach to music. Refestramus takes elements of classic progressive rock, hard rock, cinematic storytelling, experimental music, traditional folk influences, and unconventional sounds and rearranges them into something uniquely its own.
The band’s influences reach far beyond conventional rock. Refestramus draws inspiration from progressive rock pioneers such as Van der Graaf Generator, Crack the Sky, and Styx, the experimental electronic work of Delia Derbyshire and the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, and traditional Russian folk music. These diverse influences come together to create music that is ambitious, atmospheric, theatrical, melodic, and unpredictable.
The featured Refestramus song on Episode 839 is “Storms,” taken from the band’s third album, Morri’s Rock Boutique, released in 2026 through Melodic Revolution Records. The album represents one of the most ambitious chapters in the Refestramus story and features an impressive collection of guest musicians from the worlds of progressive rock, hard rock, and experimental music.
Morri’s Rock Boutique includes guest appearances from David Jackson of Van der Graaf Generator, Joe Deninzon of Kansas, Rick Witkowski of Crack the Sky, Lynx of Old Blood, and vocalist Nam Chumo. Core contributions also come from Jan Christiana and Dyanne Potter Voegtlin of Octarine Sky.
“Storms” provides listeners with an opportunity to experience the combination of musicianship, storytelling, atmosphere, and progressive songwriting that defines Refestramus. The song and album demonstrate how modern independent musicians can draw from decades of musical history while creating something that refuses to simply imitate the past.
During the conversation, Derek Ferguson takes Bill behind the music to discuss the creative process that goes into Refestramus recordings, the artists and sounds that have influenced him, and the challenges of bringing such a wide range of musical ideas together. The discussion offers an inside look at independent progressive rock, experimental songwriting, studio production, and the importance of following a creative vision.
If you’re a fan of progressive rock, progressive hard rock, classic prog, experimental rock, cinematic music, concept-driven songwriting, Chicago musicians, independent rock, or bands that refuse to stay inside traditional musical boundaries, Episode 839 of the Pennsylvania Rock Show is one you won’t want to miss.
Discover Refestramus, hear “Storms” from Morri’s Rock Boutique, and join Bill and Derek Ferguson for a conversation about rearranging the rules of progressive rock.

Refestramus Episode information:Episode 836 of the Pennsylvania Rock Show welcomes one of Pittsburgh’s most unique and genre-defying underground bands, Dros Monarch. Host Bill sits down with the four musicians behind the project to discuss how a random group of local musicians evolved into one of the city’s most original heavy music acts.
According to the band, “Four random dudes you ain’t never heard of from Pittsburgh who happen to play complementary instruments found themselves in the same room one day. They made noise and began to show up in that same room a few times a week. The noise began to take shape and before they knew it songs had formed.”
Those four musicians—Eric, Ronald, Justin, and Marcus—turned spontaneous jam sessions into something much bigger. What began as experimentation became a fully realized band built around creativity, chemistry, and a willingness to ignore traditional genre boundaries.
Dros Monarch describes their music as “Post Punk Neo Core Sludge Metal Wave,” a fitting description for a band that refuses to fit neatly into any single category. Their sound combines the aggression of sludge metal, the atmosphere of post-punk, the intensity of hardcore, and the creativity of modern alternative music into a sonic experience that is both heavy and unpredictable. The result is music that appeals to fans of underground metal, experimental rock, post-hardcore, sludge, doom, alternative metal, and independent heavy music.
In this episode, Bill explores the band’s origins, their songwriting process, musical influences, and how four musicians developed a sound that continues to evolve with every rehearsal and performance. The conversation also dives into the Pittsburgh music scene, the importance of originality, and what it means to create music without worrying about fitting into commercial expectations.
Fans of underground rock, heavy metal, post-punk, sludge metal, hardcore, and independent music will enjoy hearing the stories behind Dros Monarch’s music and learning what drives this creative Pittsburgh quartet.

Their sound pays tribute to reggae and rock legends like Bob Marley, Sublime, Stick Figure, and Rebelution, while remaining fresh and original. This unique blend of influences allows MSJR to resonate with fans of both traditional reggae and modern alternative rock.
Founded by frontman Jonathan Vanaskie, MSJR was created as a heartfelt tribute to his late friend Michael Spade Jr., who tragically passed away by suicide. In Michael’s honor, every note of MSJR’s music carries meaning. Their dedication goes beyond the stage—they are deeply active in suicide prevention awareness and community support. The band has worked with organizations such as the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, SpeakUp ReachOut Foundation, Veterans Bushido in Greensburg, The Brandon Nash Scholarship, and numerous local VFWs.

In Episode 789 of the Pennsylvania Rock Show, host Bill Domiano sits down with Dan Stonerook, an accomplished singer-songwriter, guitarist, and harmonica player whose music blends acoustic blues, folk traditions, and heartfelt storytelling. Known for weaving his own personal experiences and working-class perspective into every song, Dan’s stripped-down, authentic style sets him apart in today’s independent music scene.
As highlighted by Pennsylvania Musician Magazine’s Jim Price, “Dan incorporates his personal experiences and observations, stories and blue-collar realities into his own distinctive, stripped-down sound.” This authenticity resonates deeply with audiences, making his performances both relatable and unforgettable.
During the episode, Dan and Bill discuss the roots of his songwriting, how his personal journey shapes his music, and the influences that inspire his craft. With a style often compared to Steve Earle and Ray Wylie Hubbard, Dan carries the soul of the 60’s and 70’s singer-songwriter era while infusing it with a modern edge.
Audiences who have seen Dan perform know he brings more than just music to the stage—he delivers stories. At the Rosedale Fall Festival in Penn Hills, “Dan Stonerook on guitar and harmonica entertained the audience with his unique blend of acoustic blues and storytelling,” wrote Lillian Dedomenic of Trib Live. His ability to captivate crowds with both original songs and carefully chosen cover material reflects the depth and range of his artistry.
Listeners of this episode will get an inside look at how Dan develops his setlists, how he chooses songs that complement his originals, and how he crafts a performance that feels both timeless and deeply personal. From his earliest inspirations to his current projects, Dan opens up about the journey of being an independent musician, the challenges of connecting with audiences, and the rewards of staying true to one’s artistic vision.
If you’re a fan of acoustic blues, Americana, folk-rock, or authentic singer-songwriter music, Episode 788 is a must-listen. Dan’s storytelling, honesty, and unique sound embody the spirit of the Pennsylvania Rock Show: showcasing local, independent artists who deserve recognition far beyond their hometown stages.
