Jen Lumanlan is the host of Your Parenting Mojo podcast, which was named best research based parenting podcast by Lifehacker, and has been downloaded over 3 million times. After attending Berkeley and Yale and following a traditional career path in sustainability consulting, Jen found that parenting was her toughest challenge yet. She went back to school for a master's degree in psychology focused on child development, and another in education, and trained as a Co-active Coach to share what she learned with other parents. She is the author of the new book, Parenting Beyond Power: How to Use Connection and Collaboration to Transform your Family and the World. Jen also has a free quiz available for parents that helps you to identify the unmet need behind your child's behaviour and then some strategies to meet those needs which you can find here.

This week on the podcast I share a replay of one of the first episodes I ever recorded, on communication. This is still one of the most common struggles that clients come to me with, and that I work through with them in coaching and therapy. It can be a relief for us to understand why it makes sense that our communication styles are so different to our partners, and how we can communicate better.

I refer to Alain de Botton’s take on sulking within couple relationships. You can listen to him speak about this here.
The True Hard Work of Love and Relationships - Alain de Botton
This is a nuanced conversation and it’s important to remember that we all experience times and seasons of suffering, and if you are not experiencing daily moments of joy, this is not something to feel shame or guilt about. This episode is more a prompt to consider our own versions of joy and happiness, and how we meet the world.
In reference Alain de Botton’s work on love. You can listen to him speaking to Krista Tippett on the On Being podcast, or read his book The Course of Love.
